News & Updates - Lower Shore Workforce Alliance

The Lower Shore Workforce Alliance was thrilled to have participated in the candidate selection process for the Construction Academy program hosted by Wor-Wic Community College. This program made possible through the Maryland Works for Wind grant, provides selected candidates with a 13-week training course that is fully funded. The course is held at the newly refurbished hybrid shop and classroom, allowing students to become proficient in various construction skills.

The program not only provides students with real-life experience and knowledge about the construction industry but also offers them a chance to earn up to five certifications, including First Aid/AED, OSHA10, Rigging, Fall Safe, and Confined Space. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence and must score at least seventy percent on each written and performance-based assessment.

At the end of each cohort, a graduation ceremony is held to honor graduates and award certifications and diplomas. This ceremony is attended by families, friends, and local hiring businesses, providing graduates with a sense of pride and accomplishment. The program

HOW TO FLAWLESSLY ANSWER THE 'TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF' INTERVIEW QUESTION

The 'Tell me about yourself' interview question might feel intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Here are our best tips for a great answer.

The "tell me about yourself" interview question can be hard to answer if you're not prepared. Searching for a job, especially in a faltering economy, is stressful enough without adding in the awkwardness of answering such a personal, open-ended question.

You might feel stumped on how to answer this question because it can be difficult to talk about yourself with no guidelines. But speaking confidently about your successes can be much easier when you prepare your answers in advance. Here are our best tips for formatting and nailing your response.

Why do interviewers ask, 'Tell me about yourself?'

A job interview is all about getting to know you. Interviewers ask the "tell me about yourself" interview question as a way to transition from small talk into their technical and behavioral interview questions.

The interviewer wants to gauge if you are able to communicate clearly and professionally. Freezing up the first time you're put on the spot gives a bad impression.

The interviewer hopes the candidate can answer the question in a natural way that shows they are prepared and care about the interview. A great answer can help you stand out in a job interview.

If you're asked this question during a video or phone interview, you can have your answers in front of you. If the interview is in person, you should be prepared to answer without checking your notes.

Other ways that interviewers might ask this question

The "tell me about yourself" interview question sometimes sounds different. Interviewers might ask:

Tell me more about your background.

I'm interested in learning more about you.

Tell me about your time working at "x" company.

Can you tell me more about your experience?

Tell me something I don't already know from your resume. Be ready for any version of this question with your structured and practiced answer.

Breakdown: How to answer the 'tell me about yourself' interview question

There are many strategies for answering the "tell me about yourself" interview question. The way you choose to structure your answer may depend on your previous experience. A recent graduate will have a much different answer than a director who has been employed for decades.

While it's important to prepare your answer, you should also leave room for spontaneity and make sure it doesn't come out sounding too rehearsed.

Once you find a form that fits your experience the best, make sure you practice.

Write down your answer so you can rearrange it, make sure it flows, and keep track of key points.

Whichever method you choose, be sure to tie it back to the specific job and company you're interviewing for. The answer should make the interviewer think it makes sense you are interested in the role.

Components of your answer

Your answer to the "tell me about yourself" question should describe your current situation, your past job experience, the reason you're a good fit for the role, and how you align with the company values.

Current situation

Tell the interviewer about your current position and a recent big accomplishment or positive feedback you received. Avoid speaking negatively about your current job.

The interviewer wants to hear how your current role is similar to the position you're applying for.

If you're currently a student, use this time to talk about relevant school experiences like classes you've taken, projects you liked, or internships.

Past job experience

The interviewer likely has your resume in front of them, so don't just tell them what they already know. Use this question to touch on your past work history and highlight areas that are applicable to the position you have now.

24WaystoImproveWorkPerformance& AdvanceYourCareer

For many of us working from home whether full-time or part-time — has become the new norm, and with that comes new challenges at work. Between the distractions, interruptions, and the continuous need to maintain an agile mindset, it can become difficult to manage, seek, and commit to new ways to improve work performance.

By not taking the time to identify and improve work performance, you may find yourself experiencing issues like a decline in work quality, communication, and professional development.

Whether you’re new to the workforce, seeking a promotion, or trying to make a career change, learning how to continuously develop yourself professionally should be a standard practice that’s inspiring and challenging in a positive way. Don’t wait until your annual performance evaluation — or worse, until your boss brings it up.

Here are 24 ways to improve work performance and push yourself to become the best version of yourself at work.

Top 3 ways to Improve performance at work (with examples)

1. Ask for constructive feedback to recognize strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to improve

There’s no way for a person to be good at everything. We all have strengths and weaknesses. The great thing about acknowledging your weak points is that you’re able to identify opportunities to improve.

Even though you can always find things to improve, focus on identifying the things decreasing your work performance and continuously work on improving them. Don’t settle for “quite alright” when you can achieve “awesome.”

In addition to recognizing weaknesses, it’s important to also pinpoint your strengths and spend time cultivating and improving them. Read, learn, listen do whatever you can to be the best version of yourself every day.

A great way of understanding your weaknesses and strengths and assessing your overall work performance is by simply requesting feedback. Whether you’re just starting off, seeking promotion, or considering a career change, feedback can provide you with a perspective of yourself and your work that you may not already have. Plus, it’s an opportunity to learn from the “pros,” gain new skills and practice being a better active listener.

How to get started

1. Decide on what areas of improvement you’d like feedback on. This can be related to soft skills (indirect aspects of your role, like communication, planning, time management, or teamwork) or hard skills (direct aspects of your role, like writing, data analytics, software knowledge, or language skills).

2. Determine who you want to speak with. The ideal partner for this would be someone that you work with on a regular basis and someone who has the bandwidth to provide detailed and considerate feedback. For example, your manager may be a great resource for soft skills feedback, while a peer may be more appropriate for feedback related to your hard skills.

3. Prepare your questions. In order to receive feedback that’s helpful, it’s important to carefully consider what you want to ask. If you already have an idea of what you want to work on, more detailed or specific questions would be ideal. If you want to open the floor and get a general assessment of your work performance, open-ended questions might be a better option.

4. Take notes. Keep a record of the feedback so that you can refer back to it and track the steps you’re taking to improve your work performance

5. Reflect and respond. Once you’ve requested and received feedback, spend time reflecting on what was shared with you. Next, create a plan of how you’re going to improve and set milestones for each area of improvement.

HOW TO TALK ABOUT YOUR DISABILITY DURING A JOB INTERVIEW

How to Talk About Your Disability During a Job Interview

61 million adults in the United States live with some kind of disability. This means that 61 million adults in the United States are entitled to disability accommodations as stated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, it's evident that fewer people in the United States actually apply for and get approved for these accommodations.

The truth is that people in the United States are scared to talk about their disabilities in job interviews. They may think that they'll get rejected or be treated poorly.

Whatever the reasoning, it's preventing people from getting the accommodations they deserve. If you have a disability and you're trying to figure out how to bring it up in your upcoming job interview, keep reading.

It's Your Choice

Before you go into your job interview, you need to think about whether or not you truly want to bring up your disability in your job interview. It is completely your choice.

In fact, because of the American with Disabilities Act, it's illegal for employers to ask about your disability. They cannot ask any questions that would even lead you to tell them about a disability. If you find that an employer is doing this, you should report them to the Equal Employment Opportunity Office.

That being said, bringing up your disability may be valuable in some positions.

JOB JOURNAL

Put a Positive Spin on Things

If you feel that revealing your disability could improve your chances of getting the position, it may be worth it to talk about some of the more positive aspects of disabilities. This means that you should focus on the things that having a disability gives you rather than takes from you.

There are several skills that having a disability can teach you. All of these skills are transferrable to your role as an employee:

Perseverance

Adapting to change

Time management

The ability to handle being under pressure

Understanding

Communication skills

Diversity awareness

Think about all of the lessons and values that having a disability has brought you. Bring these up as strengths in your interview. This won't even give the interviewer room to think about the negatives.

Make Your Disability Part of Your Story

Frame your disability as an antagonist in your story rather than a hinderance in your entire life. When you're talking about struggles and triumphs, talk about how your disability gave you both.

You're are strong today because you got through every single thing that was thrown at you. Don't undersell your disability. Show it as an obstacle that you overcome every single day (even on the bad days).

Address Accommodations

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, are eligible for accommodations in the workpla given that they are reasonable. Accommodations m be the exact reason that you want to bring y disability up in the interview.

If you've already decided to bring your disability up an interview, your employer may ask about w reasonable accommodations you may request. Th could include screen-reading software, magnificat a standing desk, bathroom breaks as needed, something else.

Be sure to review the Department of Lab accommodation policies and suggestions. You mi find accommodations that you didn't know you w entitled to as an employee in the United States.

The FoodWorks program offers a fresh start to low-income individuals with 12 weeks of intense culinary training. FoodWorks students learn basic cooking skills while converting fresh produce and other perishable foods into healthy meals for distribution to those in need.

Located at Maryland Food Bank headquarters, the program training takes place in classrooms and in the Charles T. Bauer Community Kitchen, a state-of-the-art culinary facility opened in 2010. Over the course of 12 weeks, Maryland Food Bank’s Executive Chef guides students through a curriculum that includes fundamental culinary techniques, nutrition, menu planning, and job-seeking skills.
