The topic of “fate” is a touchy one. I’ve had the last six months to ponder, debate, and listen as others describe passionately what fate means. My pastor has a few opinions, but so do my hairstylist, barista and friends. Each of them make great points, yet none of them share the same definition. This made me delve into what I believe and how that shapes my reality. It reminded me of the Choose Your Own Adventure books that I used to read when I was little. For the Gen Z population, a comparison would be the show Running Wild with Bear Grylls.
The concept is simple: you have the opportunity to step outside of yourself and experience something through a second person. Removed from immediate consequence, you choose the twists and turns you take in order to reach your final destination. If you were anything like me when I was little, and you didn’t like a particular end result, you’d go back a few chapters and choose differently. For some, the ending is fate. For others, the path you take is fate. For me, I’ve come to the conclusion that the idea of fate has been so romanticized that to believe any of us actually have the ability to tempt, deter, or control it is arrogant. However,
the one thing that we all have in common is the belief that fate exists beyond circumstance, and that’s an extremely powerful connection.
I was brought up to be independent, which subsequently made me hyper-aware of my strengths and weaknesses. If you would have asked me a decade ago if I would leave law enforcement and become a magazine editor, my answer would have been an easy “No.” Writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation were not tools in my toolkit. As fate would have it, however, here I am. Mike Tomlin, the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, says it best: “It’s not what you’re capable of, it’s what you’re willing to do.” That pretty much sums up the last seven years of my life as the founder and editor of this publication.
In this issue you’ll find the concept of “fate” sprinkled throughout many of our features. Some articles take a more literal approach as we share information about our local Hindu population and their belief in Karma on page 9. Other stories discuss taking control of your fate through enhanced home and
cybersecurity on page 54, or how hormone replacement therapy is a game changer when it comes to living your best life on page 49. On page 67, The Children’s Reading Foundation explains that reading between birth and five can change the fate of all students.
Regardless of how you personally interpret the concept of “fate,” I hope this gives you a deeper understanding of how our beliefs, actions, and a touch of serendipity can collectively shape our lives. Despite the diversity in our perspectives, the strength of our connection lies in the shared desire, hope, and prayers for positive outcomes, which ultimately contributes to making the Tri-Cities a better place for each of us.

Karma is not just a Taylor Swift song. It means many different things, but to the Hindu philosophy, it's guidance to an individual’s life. Karma is thought of as a soul's balance sheet from all the lives previously lived. It's defined as, “The influence of one’s actions in one’s present and future lives”. Kar·ma /kärmə/ the measurement of your soul's journey.
"We all believe in karma," says Suresh Bhamidimarri, volunteer of the Hindu Society of Eastern Washington (HSEW). "Karma is whatever is guiding you on your righteous path without others watching. Do your job, and do it faithfully, as if it's a devotion to God. If you are on your karmic path, success and failure are treated alike".
The Hindu culture recognizes 8.4 million species of life “cycles,” with the human form being the highest, before one can reach being one with the universe, or with God: the State of Brahman, or Mukti, or liberation from Samsara. Samsara is the cycle of birth and rebirth. Hindus believe every being has divinity, and it's up to that being to fulfill their life through its karmic path.
"We believe in birth and rebirth," says Dhananjay Joshi, Hindu Priest of the HSEW. "We want to become one with God. The ultimate goal is to get out of the cycle of birth and rebirth. What I become is based on karma".
Considered one of the oldest religions in the world, Hinduism originated from the Indian subcontinent. Contrary to common knowledge, it's not considered a religion but rather dharma, or a way of life. There is no exact English translation to represent the word dharma.
"We are not a faith, per say," says Bhamidimarri. "We don't have ‘a’ set of rules. We have God, and believe that there are many different paths to reach that God. What works for me might not work for you. Rituals in Hindu dharma reflect deep underlying philosophies: Hindus believe that the same divinity resides in every living and non-living being, and therefore, see God in every animate and inanimate being".
Without a known beginning, or a singular prophet or messenger, Hinduism is a combination of knowledge from those who practice Hinduism to find moksha as a release from an inherently flawed world. They do have
"The ultimate goal is to get out of the cycle of birth and rebirth. What I become is based on karma.
a broad religious literature, including The Vedas, but the rituals and spiritual leaders (gurus) guide the society.
Hinduism is both monotheistic and polytheistic, meaning Hindus believe there is one creator, but many divine gods that help reach/attain Brahman. As a philosophical journey, Hinduism uses rituals, or pujas, and astrology to understand one's journey to reaching the Brahman.
While the destination is the same, the journey to reaching divinity can look different for every individual.
The practice of Hinduism is to find the path leading to God, thus ending the cycle of rebirth.
"I already passed through all species," explains Joshi of Hinduism. “Give me moksha, meaning ‘freedom’ or ‘liberation.’ Our ultimate goal is to find the peace".
The HSEW has been around since the mid 1990's, although it started as a cultural center run purely by volunteers. In May, 2010, HSEW added deities for worship and was transformed into a Hindu temple. The temple received its first priest (the only full-time position) in 2019.
"We were taking turns and volunteering to keep it alive," says Bhamidimarri, who is originally from India and has been a volunteer at the HSEW since 2010.
The HSEW is now up to about 1000 members, many of whom originate from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, some Middle Eastern countries, and other Southeast Asian countries.
Joshi (originally from India) moved to the United States in 2018 and leads the deity rituals for the HSEW. As a third generation priest, he sees the temple in Richland as a tie to his culture.
"We left our country, we left our parents, we left our family,"
says Joshi. "We come here (the temple) and see our deities, and we feel like we are home and can find guidance".
Besides finding guidance from their dharma, the HSEW helps the next generation learn dharma through living by example and by teaching the karmic life.
"They need to learn it from the original sources," says Bhamidimarri. "Reading is different than experiences. It's the next generation, and we want to teach them our culture rather than have them learn it from a book".
It’s not just about finding internal peace, but also about seeking understanding in society. While the Hindu Society has been around for about three decades, not many know about this subculture in the Greater TriCities. Even though Southeast Asians and Hindus are minorities as a whole, they consider themselves one within the melting pot of the United States.
"We never felt like a minority because we have been pretty well accepted wherever we go," says Bhamidimarri. "In the Tri-Cities, we are not known as much. We have been here for the past 30 years, but not that many know about HSEW".
The HSEW is trying to create more awareness through community outreach and community service projects including bake sales and their
yearly Halloween food drive for the local food bank. Just as Hindus believe there is more than one path to spiritual freedom, the HSEW believes different cultures in the Tri-Cities and Eastern Washington make the world more complex and beautiful. HSEW wants to preserve their culture while also embracing the community as a whole.
"This is our culture, and we want it to be a part of our day-to-day life," says Bhamidimarri. "It’s something that we want to pass along to the next generation while trying to assimilate to the bigger picture of the United States as a country".
The HSEW is located at 2100 Bombing Range Road in West Richland and encourages anyone in the community to learn about their way of life or join in for a puja.
T"he most effective way to do it is.. to do it." These words of Amelia Earhart ring loudly in the life of Dr. Rachel Fidino, CEO and visionary owner of New U Women’s Clinic and Aesthetics - she’s ever ready to boldly champion uncharted territories, constantly reaching for the stars.
Double-board certified and armed with national certifications as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Genetics Nursing, Dr. Fidino’s areas of specialty are of utmost importance to the realm of women's health— breast cancer risk assessment, hereditary cancer syndromes, cancer genetics, and cancer prevention, to name a few.
Fueled by a nagging sense there was a void in the Tri-Cities area for a pandemic-resilient, agile, all-encompassing female healthcare and aesthetics hub, she set out to offer this unique experience in a place that felt more like home than a hospital.
Thus, New U became a reality in January 2020, right as the world was thrown into chaos by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the unprecedented challenges, the vision prevailed owing to the unyielding support of the local community and the relentless spirit of her dedicated team.
"[Dr. Fidino is] recognized as a ofchampion women's empowerment on a national scale."
Amidst the turbulence of the pandemic, Dr. Fidino’s non-profit, The Healing Hands Project, emerged as a beacon of hope, supplying essential feminine hygiene products to underserved women and schools. This effort showcased her boundless passion and compassion for others, the hallmark qualities that have seen her recognized as a champion of women's empowerment on a national scale.
Brown, Matt Boehnke and Lynda Wilson, her relentless efforts bore fruit in 2023, when her bill was successfully passed into law! This legislation marked a crucial turning point for women at highrisk of breast cancer, enabling them to access life-saving diagnostic imaging. The remarkable feat not only
In an impressive demonstration of unwavering determination and commitment to public health, Dr. Rachel Fidino successfully navigated the intricate corridors of legislative processes in Washington State. After two years of persistent advocacy and negotiation in the senate with the help of Senators Sharon
emphasized Dr. Fidino's deep understanding of the healthcare needs within her community but also showcased her as a champion for women's health and egalitarian healthcare policies. Her hard work and the subsequent passage of the bill will have a lasting, life-saving impact on countless women's lives within the state.
To complete the wellness circle, Dr. Fidino birthed La Canneberge, a luxury skincare line crafted with an emphasis on the perfection of nature. Each product promises not just healthier skin, but also a luxurious self-care experience that nourishes and restores.
Dr. Fidino's accomplishments are numerous, from Athena Young Professional Leadership Award and a spot in the "Top 10 Young Professionals in Business under 40" by Tri-Cities Journal of Business to successive year wins of the Tri-Cities Best clinic, weight loss center, and med spa. However, this is just the start.
With an unwavering vision, the New U is set to expand to a world-class facility that'll be home to New U Women's Clinic and Academy, leading the charge in women's health and aesthetic education. Satellite locations across the Northwest and beyond are also in the pipeline.
Great reviews from patients of New U consistently describe themselves as being treated more than a recipient of a service but as an integral part of a community. Their future starts with the first appointment and becomes a wellness journey. They understand that the future is brilliant, glowing with the unwavering commitment of personalized care and groundbreaking methods.

Building lasting bonds through music with Music Together Tri-Cities
Making music with your child can be an intimate experience that forms a meaningful bond. Jana Hair with Music Together Tri-Cities has established a program that allows young children, from newborns to eight years old, to sing, dance, and create lasting memories with their families.
In 2016, Jana started a Music Together® location because it focuses on connecting families and encourages music to continue in the home – not just during class. This type of program resonated with Jana because she grew up playing the piano and singing with her own family. It was one of the primary ways her family connected with one another.
“We know that children learn best through play, and so PLAY is what we do! We also know that children learn best when those they love (their favorite grownups!) sing, dance, and play right along with them. The joyful participation of the grownups who attend our classes is vital for their child's musical growth, and for the musical community we are building,” describes Jana.
When you enter a Music Together® class with Jana, you are immediately transported to a magical place where your child is surrounded by positive energy. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, and friends are always welcome. It doesn’t matter if you are uncomfortable with your own singing or dancing, your child thinks you are the world. In 45 minutes, participants will repeat rhythmic patterns, learn how their child’s brain is processing music, and make new friends with other families.
Jana says that during her classes, “everyone contributes, everyone matters, and we cultivate a community of kindness. As I am teaching, I like to take mental notes of when I see small kindnesses occur in class”.
“It’s powerful to find and use your own voice.”
Ali Hertzel, Jana’s Favorite Female Founder nominator, says, “Music Together Tri-Cities is promoting social connections and supporting the growth and development of children in our area. It has opened my world to other families with young children. I am forever grateful for the friends I have made, thanks to
There is research to support that music helps a child’s body and mind work together. By doing so, it promotes a better understanding of math, speech, and motor skills. Jana provides the community with a fun and educational way to assist in a child’s development, while also bringing your inner child out to play. Jana says, “It’s powerful to find and use your own voice”.
Music Together Tri-Cities has enrolled over two thousand children in their program since its inception, with waitlisted classes each session. Annually, Jana holds a larger-scale Holiday Musical Open House where families make crafts, enter a raffle, and collect donations for Safe Harbor.
Jana is very inclusive and wants everyone to enjoy precious moments with their child. She is already thinking of ways to increase community engagement by holding classes in nursing homes and how to hire additional teachers to provide more opportunities for families to come off the waitlist. Music Together Tri-Cities might seem like an ordinary program, but it has an extraordinary impact on children, families, and our local community.

An Arizona vacation, a good friend, a new friend, and what some might call “fate” was all it took for Mary Jackson Rickard to formulate the idea for a group called “STORYWRITERS”.
While snow-birding in Mesa, Arizona, not that long ago, Mary Jackson Rickard busied herself with new activities each day at the 55-and-over village resort where she and her husband were staying. Under the warm Arizona sun, Mary circled up with a group of seniors and participated in their gathering of storytellers. Thinking a similar group might be a great addition to the Tri-Cities, Mary called her longtime kayaking buddy, Mickey Hunacek, who shared a love of writing and even had a couple of self-published books. Their ideas started to flow! Coincidentally, Mickey’s hair stylist knew of another local lady who also shared their passion for writing and was a published author. After a few nervous attempts to craft the perfect email, Mickey finally reached out to Linda Moore. Working together, the three ladies created the group “STORYWRITERS.”
STORYWRITERS began meeting in September, 2022, with just seven people in attendance. Each month, this free-to-the-public group chooses a different theme to focus on; writing tips are shared, and a “read around” is facilitated to give individual writers a chance to share their work aloud. While participants are not required to share, the goal of STORYWRITERS is to help new writers feel comfortable enough to share, speak, and publish. The on-going challenge that the three founding women pose to the participants is to submit work for some sort of publication, then to celebrate both successes and rejections. At first, STORYWRITERS hosted guest speakers on a monthly basis, but has since switched to a quarterly rotation. Guest speakers have included English professors, noted published authors, poets, and publishers. Monthly themes have included evolving as an author, critiquing, outlining, character development, and more. Additionally, writing prompts are assigned before each meeting to inspire writers’ personal stories. Upon completion of a year’s worth of writing assignments, then, each writer should have a good outline of personal work to pursue for legacy writing, a way of documenting and preserving personal experiences and values for future generations.
All three women share a devout faith in the Lord and believe that they have been brought together, largely at the calling each of them felt from God, to pursue the love of writing. “God knew I needed friends!” Linda recalls feeling that love upon receiving Mickey’s first email when the timing was serendipitous.
Mickey Hunacek has been married for fiftyone years and has two children and seven grandchildren. While most of her career time was spent in the field of science, Mickey recalls doing a lot of writing while working as a radiological scientist. Mickey’s blog of twelve years, “Banquet With The King,” has been her creative outlet and has contributed to her self-published book, Parenting Day by Day Devotional for Building Character. Mickey also self-published a children’s book entitled Coins of the Bible.
For most of her adult life, Linda Moore had never considered herself a writer. Having been discouraged to pursue writing at a young age, it wasn’t until her older years that Linda felt guided by God to try her hand at it again. “God said [to me], ‘Speak up and write!’” thus realizing her purpose to write had been within her all along. Linda is the author of three publications: Write Your Story and Launch Your Legacy; Write Your Story and Launch Your Legacy Journal; and When Love Shows Up which will come out later this year. Linda has been married for twelve years, has one daughter, and two grandchildren.
Mary Jackson Rickard, a native to Tri-Cities, has been married for fifty-eight years, and has three sons and seven grandchildren. Although her career revolved around interior design, Mary always had a love for writing. As a young girl she would go around to neighbors getting the latest scoop about the neighborhood happenings. She’d then write a newsletter and sell it back to her neighbors. She also kept diaries from age nine through her high school years. Mary is currently working on her legacy, documenting her life from age two until the present. She plans to publish it in the next five years, leaving a beautiful story for her children and grandchildren to read.
When asked what roles each woman takes on within the group, they all agree that they switch off, each contributing her own talents and gifts. Mary, Mickey, and Linda hope to see continued growth for STORYWRITERS–to reach and inspire more local writers–because, as their slogan states, “Everyone has a story!”
Currently, you can find flyers about their meetings at Barracuda Coffee, Graze, Novel Coffee, Panera, and more. STORYWRITERS meets on the second Monday of each month at the Richland Public Library, from 1:15 to - 2:45 pm. All are welcome!

Welcome to grilling season! As we fire up our barbecues, there's often an abundance of leftover meats like chicken, brisket, ribs, or carne asada. While classic sides like mac and cheese, pasta salad or mashed potatoes are always crowd-pleasers, the challenge arises when trying to repurpose that extra meat without feeling the need to recreate all the sides from scratch once again. Allow us to introduce to you our best-kept secret for spring and summer: no-yeast flatbread! Effortlessly transform those leftover meats into a singular, satisfying meal using ingredients that you most likely already have on hand.
ARE
SAVORY - Decide on a combination of a protein, cheese, sauce & veggie.
SWEET - Combine fruit, sweet sauces, ice cream and your favorite dessert toppings.
Check your fridge for a new combination to try!
SAUSAGE CHICKEN PORK RIBS
TIP:
If you have to go out for an ingredient, the Kennewick Public Market had our favorites.
- Smokin' Boar Mushroom /Gouda Sausage
- Granny Annie's Pear Serrano Jelly & Tayberry Jam
CHOCOLATE SAUCE
by Mary Taylor
This versatile flatbread recipe can be served with your favorite dips, spreads, or toppings. You can make it in bulk and freeze for future use or use it all at once. This dough will last in your refrigerator uncooked for 2-3 days. We recommend eating your flatbread within 24 hours of cooking for best results.
THIS RECIPE MAKES 3 PERSONAL SIZE FLATBREADS
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- Extra flour for dusting
- Olive oil for cooking
Prepare the Dough:
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
Fold in the Greek yogurt until a dough-like consistency is formed.
Shape and Chill:
Roll the dough into a hot-dog shape and divide it into 3 equal sections.
Lightly dust a flat surface with flour and roll each section into a ball.
Place the dough balls in the refrigerator to chill for 15 minutes.
Heat the Pan:
Place a frying pan on mediumhigh heat and coat it with a thin layer of olive oil. Be cautious not to burn the oil.
Roll and Cook:
Take one chilled dough ball and roll it out on a floured surface until it reaches an even width of about ¼ inch, resembling a mini pizza crust.
Place the rolled-out dough gently in the preheated frying pan.
Allow one side to cook until the edges turn slightly brown (approximately 2 minutes).
While the first side is cooking, lightly apply more olive oil to the uncooked side.
Check for a golden brown color on the bottom before flipping the flatbread and browning the other side (approximately 2 minutes for each side).
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter - Sugar for sprinkling
DIRECTIONS:
In a medium-hot frying pan, let unsalted butter brown.
Lightly coat both sides of the flatbread with the melted butter.
Once browned on both sides, sprinkle sugar evenly over the flatbread.

Subtle changes in hormone levels can throw us off our game, but hormone replacement therapy can help.
Sometimes, no matter our age, stage, or phase of life, we can start to feel less like ourselves mentally, emotionally, and physically. We can’t always see it in ourselves, but others around us might. That sense of feeling “off” doesn’t always go away once stressful circumstances or life events pass, and the problem might not be just a state of mind: it could be a hormone imbalance.
For women, even if they haven’t yet reached perimenopause or menopause, hormone levels could still be the culprit. “A lot of women come into our clinic thinking they have depression,” says Dr. Rachel Fidino, owner of New U Women’s Clinic & Aesthetics in Kennewick. “Antidepressants are the number one drugs prescribed in the United States, but in many cases, these patients have an underlying hormonal imbalance, and once that’s fixed, they’re fine!”
When levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone fall out of harmony, a wide array of symptoms can arise–from vasomotor phenomena such as hot flashes and night sweats, to mood swings, stubborn body weight gain, decreased sex drive, disrupted sleep patterns, hair loss, diminished nail growth, dry skin, dry eyes, joint pain and irritability. An in-depth bloodwork panel targeting hormones can reveal the source of the problem. “There’s usually one hormone that’s leading the pack, and once you figure out what that hormone is, it’s easier to prescribe therapy to get her feeling better,” Dr. Fidino explains.
Some residual stigma still surrounds hormone replacement therapy due to earlier findings of adverse side effects, but more recent research has since disproved those findings. Modern treatments that utilize FDA-approved bioidentical hormones actually come with positive benefits. For example, healthy estrogen levels can stave off inflammations that can give rise to many types of cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, strokes and even brain deterioration.
It’s not just women who deal with hormone imbalances either. “Around age 33 to 35, men start to lose about 1% of their testosterone production per year. That equates to 10% by age 45, and 20% by 55. That loss can result in a big impact,” says William Ruzicka, ARNP and owner of Redefined Health Clinic in Richland. “A lot of men don’t always know what it is, they just know there’s something wrong,” he explains. “They usually have a myriad of symptoms, from something as simple as generalized fatigue all the way up to full-blown signs of low testosterone such as brain fog, unexplained weight gain, lack of motivation to do the things that they normally enjoy, decreased libido, and decreased strength. They may even be starting to lose muscle mass even when working out regularly. They might also be noticing that recovery time takes a lot longer.”
“A lot of men don’t always know what it is, they just know there’s something
Similar to the benefits of estrogen therapy in women, testosterone therapy can likewise decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke in men. Ruzicka dispels the common myth that testosterone therapy can cause men to bulk up, seemingly overnight.
Though some patients will take some form of hormone replacement for the rest of their lives, many are eventually able to taper off treatments completely.
In addition to providing hormone therapy, both Ruzicka and Fidino pair their treatments with advice on how to support and sustain the outcomes of therapy through lifestyle changes.
“It’s a lot of coaching, a lot of hand-holding on our part, and we go into a lot of detail on what foods they’re eating, gut health, and antioxidants, and blend that with regular exercise, hydration and proper hormone management,” Fidino explains. “The body is a system,” Ruzicka adds. “There are all of these really cool stories that come out of this practice, and they are what drive us to help our community…how we’ve helped them save their marriage, given their life back to them, gotten them off their medications…the most fulfilling thing we can hear is that we’ve changed our patients in a positive way, getting them in the healthiest state possible so they can have the longevity of enjoying their lives.”
Marie stands out, not only as a seasoned doctor of audiology, but also as a motivational speaker and entrepreneur who combines clinical care and compassion. As the proud owner of Columbia Basin Hearing Center, All Ears Therapy, Abundant Health Alliance and Abundant Wanderings, Dr. Shannon wears multiple hats, including that of being a dedicated wife and mother.
After a chance illness left Dr. Shannon with mysterious symptoms that did not resolve, her active life came to an abrupt halt. She navigated the healthcare system as a patient, and found that her healing needs extended beyond traditional medicine. Thus, her journey into the realm of Shinrinyoku, the Japanese art of Forest Bathing, began. Through Shinrinyoku, she discovered a unique layer of wellness and a Japanese practice that spoke to her experience of utilizing time in nature as a tool for recovery.
Shinrinyoku, Dr. Shannon found solace in nature, connected with the soothing sounds and gentle nuances of the outdoors, and experienced a level of peace and healing that had profound impacts on her symptoms and personal experiences. This exploration of nature, both in small moments in the backyard, and on larger excursions, ultimately led her to embrace the practice at a deeper level: she realized forest bathing had the potential to make a positive impact on others like her, and those seeking something more than what was being offered to them physically and emotionally in standard practice.
After having become a certified nature therapist, Dr. Shannon is now on a mission to share the restorative benefits of Shinrinyoku with the Tri-Cities community. Her ventures into guided nature experiences, called “Wanderings,” are immersive sessions that range from leisurely strolls in local green spaces to
"Trust, gentleness, inclusivity, and hospitality form the foundation of supporting a healthy planet for all beings.
more extensive hikes and retreats in surrounding areas. The beauty of the practice is in its simplicity and accessibility–where those of different capabilities and access can come together to appreciate and experience the natural world around them.
At the heart of Shinrinyoku is the invitation to embrace the healing power of nature. Dr. Shannon creates sensory experiences–fostering a sense of safety and freedom in nature–with opening the doors to nature as the ultimate therapist. Through her sessions, individuals (and groups) can unplug, recharge, and reconnect, leading to personalized feelings of belonging and self-discovery. Trust, gentleness, inclusivity, and hospitality form the foundation of supporting a healthy planet for all beings.
Forest bathing sessions are tailored to connect each participant with him or herself and with nature. In Dr. Shannon’s role as therapist, she allows nature to be the guide and source of healing–which produces powerful results for those who embrace it. Abundant Wanderings is not just an invitation to explore nature; it is an opportunity to embark on a transformative journey guided by Dr. Shannon’s expertise and passion. As she shares the practice of Shinrinyoku, she invites all to fall in love with the Earth, and foster a connection that goes beyond therapy.
We are all wandering on our journey here, but now we can learn to wander abundantly.

In the hubbub of day-to-day life, it’s often not until something unexpected happens that interrupts our routines that we’re forced to stop and reevaluate. In the spirit of choosing our own fates, we teamed up with two local experts on security: Commander Aaron Clem of the Kennewick Police Department, and Christopher Grow, owner of TCT Computer Solutions, asking them to share their top tips for securing both tangibles and intangibles.
• Check that all doors are locked and dead bolted at night and before leaving the house.
• Place dowels in all sliding doors and windows as a failsafe.
• Always lock vehicles. Do not leave visible valuables, backpacks, gym bags, etc. inside.
• If you have to park on the street, park under the nearest streetlight.
• Don’t leave garage door openers in cars parked outside the garage.
• Do not allow shrubs to obscure windows.
• Leave exterior lights on at night to reduce the cover of darkness.
• The darkest parts of your yard are usually on the sides of the house.
• Dogs—outside or inside—are a strong deterrent.
• Acquire a lock box for your front porch for packages, or have orders delivered to your workplace or a post office box.
• Surveillance cameras can’t stop a crime, only help solve it.
• Get to know your neighbors; let them know your schedule and upcoming trips. Give them a way to contact you about activity at your house.
• Staying active on neighborhood apps and community pages can also help prevent crime.
“If you see something, say something,” Commander Clem says. “We always encourage people that if there’s something suspicious to them in their neighborhood, make a note of it and give us a call so that we can come out and investigate. Don’t worry about disturbing us or pulling us away from other more important things; that is our job, that is what we’re here for.”
• Install updates on your computer as soon as they become available.
• Analyze what comes into your email inbox. Carefully check the sender’s address—if it’s not from the company’s domain or subdomain, it’s not legitimate.
• Use an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven security program. “Bad people have taken to utilizing AI to refine their attacks and exploit problems in systems,” Grow says.
• Regularly back up your essential data and important files.
• Set up multi-factor authentication that requires either biometrics (a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a one-time-use code by text, call, or email in addition to a username and password.
• Do not save login credentials through your web browser.
• Do not keep a cheat sheet by your computer or in a document on your computer.
• Use long passwords consisting of at least 8 to 12 characters and a series of three or five words that you can easily remember but have no relation to you.
• Don’t use sequential or duplicate numbers or letters, but do substitute parts of the phrase with capital letters and special characters to increase complexity.
• Do not recycle old passwords.
• Legitimate retailers will not ask for your Social Security Number at checkout.
• Do not allow a company to remote access your device unless you have an established relationship.
• Online banking including through bank applications is safe nowadays thanks to federal laws requiring end to end encryption.
• Provide as little information about yourself on your social media pages as possible.
• If you think you have been the victim of an attack, seek help immediately.
“The threat landscape is constantly evolving on a weekly if not daily basis,” Grow says. “That old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, well, in cybersecurity, it’s really worth a ton of cure.”

SOMETIMES
Three years ago, Conor and Callie McGrath decided to take a leap, embrace a shared vision for the meaningful life they craved for themselves and their two boys, and went about making it a reality. The rest—a five-acre property in Benton City in the shadow of Red Mountain and 1,734 organically managed lavender plants— shortly fell into place.
Now, with the literal blood, sweat and tears of steep learning curves and startup challenges behind them, they stand on the threshold of sharing the products of their labor with the world under the name of their farm, “Belle Terre Lavender.”
"We craved living a life that inspired us a little bit more."
Out of their home kitchen, Callie and Conor have labored doggedly to master the art of lavender oil distillation, soapmaking, and skin care product alchemy while still working their day jobs as a registered nurse and IT specialist—all while establishing their farm.
“We harvest everything by hand—we hand cut it, bundle it, and leave it in the rows. Then the lavender bandits (their two boys) load up the bundles in the back of the tractor,” Callie explains. The McGraths have thus far produced a 34-product line of lush,
lavender-infused-luxury items using all-natural ingredients. These include essential oils, hydrosol, face masks, a calming muscle and pain fighting lavender magnesium cream, bath bombs infused with hemp CBD, culinary products, candles and more, spanning five scent groups: “sleepy time,” “lavender patchouli,” ”lavender citrus,” “spa day,” and “sexy time.” And they’re not done yet—massage oil and a men’s product line are in the works. “Everything that we make is really thoughtful,” Callie says. “We want to make people feel special, like the product they get is the most gorgeous thing they’ve ever received! We’re here to give beautiful moments”.
“When we decided to go into skincare, we were wanting to create something that would take care of people. Lavender is the cure-all for everything. Being a veteran, I’m able to make products that help people with PTSD. We love that we’ve been able to do something with the beautiful land and make beautiful things for people,” Conor comments.
Looking back at the juncture that brought them to where they are now, Callie explains, “We craved living a life that inspired us a little bit more; we dreamed of being together, raising our children,
and having a full life together. We were devoted to putting a life together that we actually wanted to live, one filled with beauty”.
“We’re now living the life we want, versus the one that found us,” Conor adds.
“Or the one we were supposed to live,” Callie enjoins as she recalls the feeling of tedium that had settled over their previous lives. “Once you’re done remodeling your home, having children, and getting a job…after we did all of those things, it was like, now what?”
A brush with potential disaster during the summer of 2022 nearly brought an end to that dream when their lavender plants began to yellow causing the McGraths to suspect a devastating fungal disease. “We thought we were losing everything,” Conor recalls. Tests for disease came back negative, however, and they eventually discovered the problem’s cause was the stress of a prolonged heatwave that season. Some tweaks to their irrigation schedule soon remedied the issue.
Conor now works part-time from home and focuses on farm operations and business development for their brand. “Hard work isn’t the issue; no matter what we do it’s going to be hard work! My day job would be in a windowless office staring at a screen, and that was hard, but now I’m outside, and my view is the Horse Heaven Hills and Red Mountain, so I don’t care if my hands bleed! It’s so much more fulfilling”.
"I don’t care if my hands bleed! It’s so much more fulfilling."
“We’re building experience as we go,” Callie says. “The roadblocks and challenges we had a year ago are not those we have today, but we’re so much more prepared to face those challenges because we know on the other side it will turn out just fine.”

Though this title might sound taboo, many find that nurturing your spiritual energy can lead to alternate methods of healing, selfdiscovery, and understanding the world around us as it pertains to our life’s purpose.
Our spiritual energy refers to the essence of who we are and our connection with something greater than ourselves. It is what gives us a sense of purpose, meaning, and happiness in life. One way to understand spiritual energy is to think of it as the fuel that keeps our inner self alive and thriving. Just as our bodies require physical energy in the form of food and sleep to function, our spiritual selves also need a power source. Taking care of our spiritual energy is just as important as taking care of our physical and mental well-being.
Energy is all around us. It’s very much connected to all aspects of our lives. Culturally, Americans are often consumed by the commotion of our environment. Oftentimes we ignore physical, mental and spiritual needs for the sole reason that life gets too busy. But, keeping a clear mind is crucial, not only to avoid burnout, but to be able to tap into our true potential. This can be done in a variety of ways: our pastor might tell us to pray, our yoga instructor might suggest we meditate, our therapist might ask us to journal, or our doctor might prescribe regular physical exercise. All of these methods are valid and have been proven to reduce stress and help clear your mind. In conjunction with these common practices, one might also be curious about energy readings.
Valissa Avalos, a local intuitive and founder/owner of Grey Healing, provides energy readings for people using a combination of astrological birth charts, chakra, and tarot. Valissa does not claim to be psychic, but rather acknowledges the fluidity of energy and the impact of personal choices. While her predictions are not necessarily definitive, she hopes to empower people with knowledge and insights that can help them navigate life’s tough decisions. Valissa suggests finding what resonates with you personally, whether it’s meditation, prayer, yoga, a walk through nature, artistic expression, etc.
For Valissa, she always felt called to help people, but was unsure how to do so. After a lot of research and a few formal classes on various forms of divination, she started offering oracle insights for people, a gift Valissa always felt she possessed
but never previously tapped into. She explained that physical betterment, mental clarity, and spiritual enlightenment are all closely linked. Her job is a form of guidance for when people feel stuck or need a little direction in their lives. Valissa shared that she can tailor each reading to the comfort level of the individual. For example, if a client is uncomfortable with tarot cards, she can leave that part out of her reading. “[Many have] managed to integrate these new concepts (her energy readings) into their spiritual journey without compromising their beliefs,” Valissa states. “I love that everyone can find something [from it].”
While common coping methods such as prayer, meditation, journaling and exercise are conventional avenues for maintaining well-being, there’s a less commonly discussed yet profoundly impactful practice in the realm of spiritual energy readings. Recognizing the importance of spiritual energy as it relates to spiritual health is just as important as understanding the need for exercise and eating healthy to maintain one’s physical health.
How the Children’s Reading Foundation is helping youth in the Mid-Columbia and beyond.
by Cherami Freeman
You may be familiar with The Children’s Reading Foundation of the Mid-Columbia, an organization that supports reading, literacy, and education for our local kids. But did you know that our local organization is the flagship chapter of The National Children’s Reading Foundation? The National Foundation and it's Mid-Columbia Chapter are both headquartered in Kennewick, Washington. They are both doing big, important things for kids and families in our community and afar.
The Children's Reading Foundation has served thousands of local kids and families since its inception in 1996, focusing on children’s development from birth to third grade in ways that foster essential literacy, math, and socialemotional skills. It advocates Read Together 20 Minutes Every Day™ to children during formative early years.
In 1998, the local Foundation expanded to become a national organization with communitybased reading foundation chapters and school-
readiness parent engagement programs across North America. Affiliates are designated by their geographic location, such as Mid-Columbia (CRFMC), South Sound, WA, Glynn County, GA, and Appalachia, TN. Today Kristin Norell leads the National CRF as Chief Executive Officer from its offices, print shop, and warehouse in downtown Kennewick.
The magic happens for MidColumbia in a KSD portable classroom at Canyon View Elementary School with a team of three full-time, two part-time, and eleven seasonal employees. Its impact spans from Finley to the Tri-Cities, and West Richland, and from Mesa and Connell to Benton City and Prosser.
"We’re encouraging parents and caregivers to put away distractions and read together.
CRFMC Executive Director
Leanne Luehrs-Purcell is a former teacher. She oversees programs, fundraising, donor relations, business operations, grant writing and community book events across the Mid-Columbia. “One focus this year is to educate families about the benefits of physical connection that happens between a child and parent while reading,” Leanne says. “We’re encouraging parents and caregivers to put away distractions and read together.”
CRFMC’s short-term goal is fostering family connections.
“We’re in a post-pandemic window, where I believe it’s crucial to remind families the importance of face-to-face, physical connection. To be intentional about being present with our children, and reading together 20 minutes a day is one of the most beneficial ways to do that. Read early, and often. We know that children from birth to five learn at a speed unmatched the rest of their lives.”
CRFMC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LEANNE LUEHRS-PURCELL
Rick Holmes, Bechtel Principal Vice President and CRFMC Board
President says, “Parents and caregivers are the first teachers in a child’s life. Part of our vision is to encourage and educate those parents in raising a reader.”
CRFMC even has Former Secretary of Defense General James Mattis in its corner. In a feature video on its website read20minutes.com, the Tri-Cities native recalled how meaningful it was for his mother to read to him every night. “My
earliest recollections were of my mother reading Swiss Family to me and just sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for it to start the next night cause I wanted to know what happened,” General Mattis recalls. “It opened the world to me and after a while, it got where I needed to read because I knew there were all these good things out there that I wanted to learn.”
“My family created a reading environment just by having books around all the time, because books reminded us all, especially as we grew older, that once you open someone’s mind it’s really hard to close it again,” General Mattis says. “If you want to put that child on the best path to their own success. It’s an investment in your children’s lives. If we can get reading 20 minutes a night to be pervasive in our community, we’re going to enable our young people to go a long ways in life.”
The Children’s Reading Foundation (readingfoundation.org) is the brainchild of five citizen founders: Nancy Kerr, Deb Bowen, Sandy Matheson, Lynn Fielding, and Paul Rosier. They hatched the idea on a Sunday afternoon at Lynn’s house after discussing how the community could support educators and families in their important role to ensure children learn to read early and well.
The group came together in 1995, after the 1993 Washington State Educational Reform Act, and six years ahead of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, to focus on what they believed was the root cause of academic failure in high
school. “These laws required competency testing that focused on high schoolers, but the data demonstrated that high school performance could be predicted by third grade reading scores,” Nancy Kerr explains. Nancy is a former teacher, Kennewick School Board Director, and Crystal Apple awardee, and still serves as President of the National Foundation’s Board of Directors.
“In 1996, we had 41 to 43 percent of our freshman getting Ds or Fs in English, math, or science at the end of their first semester,” recalls Lynn Fielding, co-founder, long-time school board member, and tax attorney who helped
bring data-driven analysis and decision-making to the Kennewick School District. “Many high school students were not performing well.” So, they dug a little deeper and looked back at middle and elementary school data.
Data indicated that a student who didn’t read at grade level by the end of third grade is more likely to struggle with other curriculum or drop out of high school. “Reading is the gateway skill to further academic learning. In kindergarten through third grade, children learn to read, and by fourth grade, students are expected to read to learn,” Nancy explains.
CO-FOUNDER LYNN FIELDING
Research indicates that parent involvement makes a huge difference in the reading ability and school readiness of a child. "We learned we needed to get parents involved with this. We created The Children's Reading Foundation to support reading,” Lynn says. “Some kids come to school with a 500-word vocabulary. They haven't been read to, they haven't been talked to, and they rarely catch up."
"The data is stark," Lynn says. "Birth to five is where you decide whether
"In kindergarten through second grade, children learn to read, and by third grade, students are expected to read to learn.
your child will start at grade level or behind." An achievement gap exists on the first day of kindergarten. Students who start ahead, typically stay ahead, year after year.
In the book Lynn and Nancy coauthored with Paul Rosier, The 90% Reading Goal, they explain that “daily time with books tells a child that ‘you are very important to me’ and ‘reading is a very important thing to do.’” They also explain that practice makes better: “Play catch with your children to develop ball
handling skills; swim with them to develop water safety skills; read with them to develop reading skills.”
Lynn, Nancy, Bev Abersfeller, Steve Halliday, Marilee Eerkes and others were the initial architects and provided valuable assistance to CRF's nationally respected, locally loved, research-based school readiness program, READY! For Kindergarten®. READY!
“empowers parents and caregivers to succeed in their role as children’s first and most influential teachers,” according to the Foundation website.
“We want to raise a nation of readers,” Nancy says. “Our mission is to literally change the future for countless children by giving them a strong reading foundation, thereby reaching their full potential in school and life.”
Rachelle Pyle Doty was a student at Kennewick High School when The Children’s Reading Foundation was formed. “Nancy Kerr was one of my favorite teachers. I signed up for all of her classes: home and family life, interior design, Careers in Education classes,” Rachelle recalls. “I wanted to be a teacher, but I became a parent instead.”
“Parents are our children’s first and most loved teachers,” Nancy reminds us. Nancy helped introduce Rachelle to Foundation programs, and Rachelle started reading to her son, Clayton, from his infancy. As a baby, he became a poster child with his mother for
"At his baby shower, we asked our guests to gift books with a note inside, instead of cards.
a reading campaign, “Los 20 minutos mas important de su dia” — The most important 20 minutes of your day, read with your child.
READY! helped open Rachelle’s eyes as a new parent. “It is important to give parents the tools they need. There’s so much being thrown at you,” Rachelle says. “Reading to my son, talking to him, and his learning to read early helped a lot with my son. He was an early talker. It helped his curiosity and gave him a head start
on learning. My mom read to him all the time. He took to the activities and books.”
Clayton’s own son Krew was born in December 2023, and Clayton is already reading to him. "At his baby shower, we asked our guests to gift books with a note inside, instead of cards,” Clayton says.
“My grandson is only months old, and he already has quite a collection of books,” Rachelle says with a smile.
The legacy of The Children’s Reading Foundation has stretched far beyond the pages written in the Mid-Columbia. The National CRF has a powerhouse board of directors and executive team that includes experts from New York to San Francisco in the disciplines of publishing, child development, education, business, media, advertising and non-profit. They are leading the charge to improve literacy among children from coast to coast.
With a presence in over 30 states and Canada, The National CRF chapters and programs are sponsored by school districts, businesses, civic organizations, faithbased groups, state agencies, and more. Learn more here.
From the 8000 square foot warehouse near downtown Kennewick, the local team of four lead the national organization and print, purchase, assemble, and distribute READY! kits and materials to the country. The distribution team is lead by Operations Director Chris Axelson who has operational
experience from Samsung and LG in Korea to Amazon near Seattle.
“Our focus is to ensure gold star service for all of our customers regardless of size or location and whether they are ordering one book or 200 kits,” says Chris. “All families in all places deserve the same attention if we can help it.”
The National Team has formed partnerships to create their quality award winning learning kits from Melissa & Doug, Highlights, Scholastic, Carson Dellosa, Penguin Random House to name a few.
Foundation growth is not just geographical. During the pandemic, the National Foundation launched READY! for Kindergarten self-paced e-learning workshops in English and Spanish, and tens of thousands of parents have benefitted from online READY! programming.
The Reading Brain, a PSA produced non-gratis by McCann Advertising NYC, launched on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn in 2019 and still reaches families today with its messaging.
The READY! for Kindergarten parent programs also have targeted curriculums, including READY! for Math, READY for STEM, and READY! for Social & Emotional Growth. The READY! for Child Care and Preschool program aims to create continuity between a child’s learning at home and childcare or preschool.
The National Foundation’s latest initiative was redesigning its online Resource Hub, which provides free thematic resources for families and caregivers. Updated monthly, these resources include booklists, activity sheets, crafts, games, and reading tips to help meet the goal of Read Together 20 Minutes Every Day and Play With a Purpose™ for 10 minutes a day. Explore more here.
From a freeway underpass in Oklahoma City, to inner city Chicago; to the farmlands of Othello, WA and the hollows of the Appalachian Mountains, CRF delivers the joy of reading to youngsters.
If the message isn’t clear yet, here it is one more time: Read with a child 20 minutes every day.
of CRF programs supported from the Tri-City headquarters include:
• A $6.64 million federal grant to serve 19 high-need school districts in Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Indiana, Maryland and Michigan. (2012-2016)
• For over 10 years, The Mayo Clinic in Mankato, MI provided READY! for Kindergarten as an employee benefit for nearly 2000 employees, as did the Taylor Corporation with over 2500 employees. This included working with immigrant families learning English.
• Memphis, TN school district provides 2000 families READY for Social-Emotional Growth as a support following Covid.
• The Kentucky Department of Education used CRF’s Read Up materials for its summer reading outreach since 2019.
• A new READY! for Reading program will be implemented in 39 sites across Idaho this summer (2024), an initiative of Idaho Association for the Education of Young Children (IAEYC). The Idaho AEYC is celebrating 10 years of using READY! this summer.
• Books for Babies provides a new bilingual board book and early reading information to each new mother after the birth of a child at local birthing centers.
• CRFMC Books for Babies is sponsored by STCU, 3 River Community Foundation Trios, Kadlec, and Columbia Birthing Center
• R.O.A.R. is our newest initiative that focuses on encouraging and empowering families in rural areas to read at home with their child. This initiative is born from our experience working in these vulnerable areas and routinely seeing the lack of opportunities and support for people outside of the Tri-Cities metro area.
• As we began making the concerted effort to reach these areas (Prosser, Benton City, Patterson, Finley, Mesa, Connell, and Basin City), we saw that the need is great for these families and that we need to create a long-term solution.
• Trained community volunteers are partnered with students who need help developing their literacy skills. These coaches provide one-on-one mentoring twice a week during the school day. With the help of Team Read tutors, many students make great strides to catch up to the rest of their class before the end of the school year.
• Available in select elementary schools in the Kennewick and North Franklin School Districts (list available). Even high school juniors and seniors can sign up to be Team Read mentors for class credit
• Resolution Read serves 600 local families with a free bag of 12 books delivered to their homes in January each year. Space is limited. Sponsored by Hanford Mission Integration Solutions
• First-year K-3 teachers can apply for a grant of 75 books for their new classrooms.
• Summer learning loss is a real problem with a simple solution. The READ Up! program encourages children to continue to read throughout the summer months to help avoid summer-time reading loss that sets a child behind academically.
• CRFMC partners with local organizations to provide literacy-based summer activities to kids, and includes free books, reading trackers, and events throughout the summer to pick up free books.
• Thrice-yearly workshops for parents of children 0-5, with learning resources, tools to play with a purpose at home, and books. Free to Kennewick residents. Offered in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, and Somali.
• Check our website for a list of upcoming events & Follow CRFMC on Facebook and Instagram to keep track of local events and tips and tricks for reading with your kids!

Distance from Kennewick: 118 miles
Travel Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
The city of Ellensburg pulls from a rich historic past while also creating new vibrant experiences for its community. It is home to both the biggest rodeo in the state of Washington, the state’s first barn quilt trail and the Ellensburg Blue Agate (the third rarest gemstone in the world).1 Downtown Ellensburg is incredibly inviting, charming, and walkable, full of so many unique gems for you to find among its city blocks.
Enjoy a remarkably cozy stay at one of two silo tiny homes in Ellensburg hosted by Airbnb superhosts Ben and Sara Tomaso. Silo Tiny Tower, pictured here, is just a short jaunt from downtown Ellensburg. Their other Silo Tiny House is located about a mile from Central Washington University’s campus, and it feels a little more out-of-town as it sits surrounded by pasture. Both Silo Tiny Homes have extraordinary features such as enchanting spiral staircases, porthole windows, a skylight at the top of each silo and an outdoor deck and patio space. The gorgeous interiors are bright, eye-catching and modern. The layout was designed for functionality to fit all the amenities you could desire, including a full kitchen and washer and dryer unit without feeling cramped.
Not only are Ben and Sara the hosts, but Ben also created both tiny homes. He is a school bus driver who had a dream, with a buddy of his, to turn old silos into something amazing. He did just that. The first
silo was a two-year process, taking a 5,100 bushel silo from a nearby farm, dismantling it piece by piece, transporting it, and then reassembling it. He then built the interior and tiny home structure with the help of engineers. Ben enjoyed the process so much that he excitedly went on the hunt for another silo. After an extensive search he found one in Iowa. This time it only took Ben six months to transform the second silo into another beautiful tiny home.
Both Silo Tiny Homes not only make for a fabulous place to stay while you are in Ellensburg, but they also make for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Craving a cold treat? You have to stop at Winegar’s Coffee & Creamery. They are a local establishment with deep roots in Ellensburg that began as a local dairy farm, “Winegar Dairy,” founded by Truman and Phoebe Winegar in 1956. In 1960 it became “Winegar’s Dairy Drive-In,” when they opened a drive-in milk retail store. The Winegar family eventually started making ice cream in 1992 when the granddaughter of the founders, Richelle Winegar-Higdon, graduated college from Central Washington University and took on her father and grandfather’s dream of making ice cream. They eventually added coffee and espresso to the mix to create the Winegar’s Coffee & Creamery that you can visit today. They still make their ice cream the same way they did back then: in small handcrafted batches of 9 gallons at a time with old fashioned
Many of their menu items use local produce, desserts, and beer, giving you a true taste of Ellensburg. They were named both, “Best Cocktails in Kittitas County” and “Restaurant of the Year” in 2023 for good reason. Their cuisine and drinks were not only beautifully presented but also very flavorful. The menu is diverse with a new fresh sheet each month that includes many gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Julep is widely known for their whiskey, craft cocktails, and great atmosphere, making it an ideal location for a great date night out or drinks with friends.
hand crank freezers. This is what they attribute to making their ice cream so deliciously rich and creamy.
You can tell the Winegars take a lot of pride in their rich family history. Photos of their family decorate the walls of their shop. A family run business from the beginning, there’s a fourth generation of Winegars already jumping in to work alongside the third. On the menu, you will find nods to beloved family members in many of the names of their ice cream flavors. The vanilla ice cream with root beer swirl is called “Grandpa Don’s Root Beer Float, ” and their huckleberry ice cream with huckleberry swirl (pictured here) is called the “Vicki Berry.” If you love family run establishments with great stories and big hometown charm, this is one to check out.
They have two locations for you to snag a scoop or two of their rich creamy ice cream. One is just a short walk from downtown and the other is on the same street, a little further between downtown and CWU’s Campus.

The shop is covered floor to ceiling with plants, and some glitz and glam sprinkled in for good measure. They truly have it all, from rare and unusual collector plants to an entire cactus room. Their plants are displayed by categories such as “Pet Friendly Plants,” and “Desert Plants” that need less care, which is super helpful to plant enthusiasts and beginning plant owners alike. The Botany Shop makes adding a little greenery to brighten up your home accessible to everyone including those of us who may not possess a green thumb, yet! While we were browsing, a plant owner brought in a plant they purchased a while ago to get some helpful advice on how to best continue their care for it. The staff was kind and encouraging as they shared their knowledge and expertise. It is evident in every detail of The Botany Shop that they have not only an immense passion for botany but also sharing that joy with others.
