My priorities today aren’t what they were then — and that’s not a failure. That’s awareness.
And awareness tells me: continuing the magazine won’t meet the needs I now know I have. So I’m closing this chapter and retiring Taylored Living Magazine — on my terms. Fittingly, the final theme of this last issue is FORTIFY.
Your life is as profound — or mundane — as you choose it to be. You decide the pace. You decide how much chaos you let in — or how much you let roll off your back.
When I started this magazine, my son had just entered kindergarten. Now he’s a freshman in high school. Nine years — nearly a decade of deadlines, passion projects, deep conversations, personal essays, hard truths, laughter, and grit.
Over the past nine years, I’ve discovered my limits — and somehow managed to keep both my family and sanity intact. In gambling terms (and yes, I’ve been known to place a bet or two), I’ve beaten the house. And now, I’m walking away — not because I have to, but because it's time.
If you’ve read my past publications, you may have noticed the recurring themes woven through all 28 editor’s notes. Each magazine was thoughtfully curated around my life in the Tri-Cities at the time of print. Through daily interactions and
recommendations, I found talented writers, inspiring individuals, and experts in their fields — and told their stories with care and class. Whether they were people who “made their mark” or simply “did because they could,” I promised myself I would never force anyone or anything in — or out — of my life. Just as I once promised my husband I’d never pigeonhole myself or limit my opportunities.
People, places, projects — even moments — have their time. And when that time is up, the wisest thing you can do is recognize it and move on.
A hockey friend of mine recently shared something that stuck with me: turtles weather the storm and just keep swimming. Every day. They don’t fight the water — they move with it. And eventually, they get to where they’re going. Wherever that may be.
I feel like a turtle right now. So here I am — swimming, too.
Life is hard. Staying where you don’t belong is hard. Starting over without a map is hard. And I’m about to do it for a third time — with no destination in sight.
For some, that might sound terrifying. For me, it feels like freedom. A fresh start, full of possibility. I’ve come to value the journey far more than the destination. And though I don’t have a plan, I’ve got my experience, resilience, and hard-earned wisdom to guide me. I’m not afraid or sad about this transition — I’m embracing it.
Over the years, many of you have come to know me better than some of my oldest friends and family — simply because you took the time to follow along and read what I’ve written. That’s what nine years of storytelling and connection will do.
To those of you who invited me into your homes, hearts, and heads — thank you. To those who wrote for me, trusted me, believed in the vision — even if only once — your heart showed, and I was blessed to witness it.
If I’ve learned anything through all of this, it’s this: the people who show up for you might not be the ones you expect. But you’ll find your people — the ones who ride shotgun, who throw their skin into the game for the joy of the journey, who sit beside you around campfires and let you wander
to the edge before gently pulling you back.
Those are your people. Cherish them.
As for this publication — together, we’ve built and connected a community of readers, leaders, and change-makers. And that’s something we should all be proud of.
While Taylored Living Magazine is retiring, I’m thrilled to share that a new business directory and catalog will emerge from the foundation we’ve built. I’ve chosen someone capable and committed — someone with the same tenacity and grit I had when I began — to carry the torch. She’ll continue our mission of supporting local business, fostering connection, and advocating for women-owned enterprises.
As for me, this is not the end of my story. Just the closing of a beautiful, complicated, unforgettable chapter.
Thank you for reading. For caring. For letting me be a small part of your lives.

In a community brimming with talent, tenacity, and innovation, few names shine brighter than Mary Taylor’s. As the founder of Taylored Living Magazine (TLM), Mary didn’t just build a publication—she created a platform that celebrated the pulse of the Tri-Cities and helped shape its cultural landscape for nearly a decade. Now, as she steps away from the magazine, we honor her as the final Favorite Female Founder and reflect on the impact she’s made through passion, storytelling, and service.
Mary’s journey to founding TLM began far from the world of publishing. In 2006, she moved to Kennewick, Washington, to become a police officer with the Kennewick Police Department. It was in this role that she first connected deeply with the community, eventually meeting her husband and laying down roots in the Tri-Cities.
Her path shifted after she became a mother. Though she initially attempted to return to law enforcement, Mary felt a change in purpose. She realized a growing desire to stay home and raise her family—an instinct that would lead her to start something entirely new.
From that desire, Taylored Living Magazine was established. With no formal background in publishing, Mary stepped into the unknown with grit and vision. What began as a local lifestyle magazine soon blossomed into a powerful community voice, known for its elegant design, striking photography, and authentic storytelling. TLM highlighted the people and businesses that make the Tri-Cities vibrant— often giving visibility to those whose stories might have otherwise gone untold.
Under Mary’s leadership, the magazine became a platform for empowerment and recognition. She believed
that honoring people’s stories helped validate their journeys, and that philosophy resonated across the region. TLM became more than a publication— it became a movement, encouraging others to dream big and break new ground.
“I think we've created a movement by inspiring the next generation of trailblazers,” Mary shared. “Just because something hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be- it just hasn't happened yet.”
Despite the many accolades she’s received, Mary remains remarkably humble. She often credits other women in the community as more deserving

of the spotlight, drawing inspiration from their courage and creativity. While she’s quick to downplay her own accomplishments, those who know her work recognize that TLM’s lasting impact would not have been possible without her passion, vision, and tireless dedication.
Mary attributes her success to a combination of resilience and the ability to persevere through challenges. Founding and running a publication isn’t for the faint of heart— it requires creativity, adaptability, and often, a leap of faith. For nine years, she gave TLM everything she had,
producing 28 beautifully curated issues that have become part of the Tri-Cities’ cultural legacy.
Like many creative professionals, Mary came to understand that continuing the magazine without full commitment would compromise the
high standards she set—or the trust her community placed in her. With that in mind, she made the heartfelt decision to retire the magazine at its peak, ensuring it would be remembered as something to which she gave her all.
Her vision for the future is still unfolding. Mary plans to write a book about her nine-year journey with TLM—a project that promises inspiration, wisdom, and a behindthe-scenes look at what it takes to build something from scratch. Beyond that, she remains open to where life leads next, unafraid of the uncharted territory ahead.
When asked what advice she would give to future female founders, Mary offers a powerful and unapologetic message:
“Lift weights and strengthen your backbone. Stand up for what you believe and what matters to you.”
Her words reflect the strength and authenticity that have defined both her work and her character.
Mary’s story is not just about creating a magazine—it’s about creating space. Space for connection. Space for stories. Space for others to see themselves reflected and celebrated. She has shown us that storytelling, when done with heart, can be transformative—not just for readers, but for the community as a whole.
As we reflect on the legacy of Taylored Living Magazine, we do so with immense gratitude. Mary Taylor gave our community a gift that will continue to inspire for years to come. She reminded us that ordinary people have extraordinary stories, and that sharing them brings us closer together.
Thank you, Mary, for your creativity, courage, and unwavering belief in the power of story. You didn’t just build a magazine—you built a legacy.

At New U Women’s Clinic & Aesthetics, beauty is never the goal in isolation—it’s the natural byproduct of health, balance, and confidence. Known for her holistic approach to women’s health, Dr. Rachel Fidino is passionate about helping women embrace every decade of life with vitality and grace.
“Aging doesn’t have to mean losing your glow or energy,” Dr. Fidino shares. “When we balance hormones, nurture the skin from within, and address early signs of change proactively, we can preserve health and beauty for decades.”
For Dr. Fidino, aging is not a process of decline but an opportunity to step fully into one’s most confident, vibrant self.
“We’re rewriting the story of aging for women,” she explains. “With the right strategy, you can look forward to every decade feeling strong, energized, and beautiful. My goal is to empower women with the tools and treatments that keep them thriving.”
Below, Dr. Fidino shares her Top Treatment Recommendations for Women in Their 30s, 40s, and 50s—a decade-by-decade guide designed to help women look and feel their best from the inside out.
This is the decade to establish strong habits and preserve your collagen foundation for the years ahead.
• Preventive Neurotoxin (Botox® or Xeomin®) – Softens expression lines before they become permanent. Expert Tip: Start with the minimum recommended units every 3–4 months; you’ll need fewer units long-term.
• Microneedling + Exosomes/PDRN/PRP – Boosts collagen, shrinks pores, and accelerates healing. Expert Tip: Think of microneedling as “aerating your lawn”—adding Exosomes or PRP immediately after treatment delivers growth factors exactly where your skin needs them.
"Treat your skin and health like an investment—the earlier you start, the more you’ll gain in the long run." –Dr. Rachel Fidino
• Medical-Grade Skin Care Starter Set – Retinol, antioxidant serums, and mineral SPF protect and build collagen. Expert Tip: Treat your skin like a 401(k)— start collagen banking now with a consistent regimen.
Collagen banking is a proactive strategy focused on stimulating and preserving your body’s natural collagen production. Building your “collagen reserves” now maintains youthful skin and delays visible signs of aging later.

Hormonal shifts in your 40s often bring changes in energy, sleep, mood, and body composition. Restoring balance and rebuilding structural support is key.
• Comprehensive BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) – Balances mood, sleep, libido, and protects bone health. Expert Tip: Pellet therapy offers steady levels with convenient dosing every 3–4 months.
• Dermal Filler or Radiesse for Midface Volume – Restores youthful contours and subtly lifts the lower face. Expert Tip: Layer Radiesse first, then hyaluronic filler 8 weeks later for results that last 2+ years.
• RF Microneedling (Morpheus8) + Exosomes –Tightens lax skin on the lower face and neck. Expert Tip: Schedule three sessions four weeks apart; one annual maintenance treatment is often enough.
• Medical Weight-Loss Program – Reduces visceral fat common during perimenopause. Expert Tip: Shift your eating window earlier in the day to optimize cortisol and glucose levels.
• Targeted Supplements – Creatine, probiotics, immune boosters, and medications like Addyi® can address midlife needs and support energy, immunity, and muscle mass.
In your 50s, comprehensive support for your heart, brain, bones, and collagen production is crucial.
• Full-Spectrum BHRT (Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA) – Restores optimal hormone levels to support heart, brain, and bone health. Expert Tip: Take nightly Prometrium® with a small fatty snack to improve absorption and deepen restorative sleep.
• PDO ThreadLift or RF Skin Tightening – Lifts and firms without surgery. Expert Tip: Pair with a light filler touch-up at six weeks for “invisible facelift” results.
• PRF for Under-Eyes & Hair Restoration –Releases growth factors to improve thinning hair and brighten tired under-eyes.
• BBL® Photofacial + HALO® Laser – Combines pigment removal with deep resurfacing for a total “surface-to-dermis reset.” Expert Tip: Expect one week of downtime for powerful, lasting results.
• Comprehensive Longevity & Brain Support Stack – Omega-3s, polyphenols, creatine, methylene blue, and more help protect muscle, cognition, and cellular health.
“When women understand how to work with their bodies instead of against them, everything changes,” Dr. Fidino says. “We can preserve your health, your energy, and your natural beauty so you step into each decade with confidence. That’s what redefining aging is all about.”
By blending innovation, comprehensive services, and an unwavering commitment to patient relationships, New U is redefining not only beauty and aging, but the very future of women’s health.
5 tips to help you stay confident & camera-ready all night long
by Amy Rene with Amy Rene
Holiday parties mean hugs, flash photos, and long nights. Your makeup should last through it all without needing a complete reset. Whether you’re posing under the twinkling lights or dancing past midnight, these pro tips will help you look fresh, feel confident and stay cameraready.
1. SKIP THE SPF (JUST THIS ONCE)
While we can all agree that SPF is essential for daily wear, foundations with SPF over 30 or mineral formulas can reflect light in flash photography. The result? Shiny skin. For evening events, opt for a foundation without SPF and avoid the ghostly flashback.
2. BUILD BRONZER & BLUSH IN LAYERS
Flash photography can wash out your features. By layering bronzer and blush more generously than usual, you’ll add warmth and dimension to your face. The key is to build gradually with thin layers for a natural, yet vibrant finish.
3. CONTROL SHINE WHERE IT COUNTS
Keep oil at bay with a product like MAC Blot Powder, especially in the T-Zone. It takes down oil and reduces shine without caking up or adding texture, making it perfect for touch-ups throughout the night.
4. ADD A TOUCH OF SPARKLE
Make your eyes pop with a soft, elegant shimmer. Try tapping Urban Decay’s Moondust in Space Cowboy onto your eyelids with your pinky finger. Wear it alone or layer it over shadow–it catches the light beautifully and gives you a polished glow.
5. THE PERFECT MINI TOUCH-UP KIT
For a quick refresh, press a bit of powder onto a cotton round, fold it, and tuck it in your bag with your lip color. That’s all you need to revive your look in seconds.

Practical tips for fortifying ourselves and our families to confront the unexpected
In a world increasingly streamlined by technology—both at the systems level and throughout individual everyday lives—it’s easy to believe that power outages, car breakdowns, and other disruptions are relics of the past.
However, in an ever-changing world, even with more safeguards in place than ever before to prevent loss of access to electricity, clean water, a steady food supply, and reliable shelter, anomalies can still occur. We can’t predict exactly when it will happen—but we can prepare.
"Emergencies happen to whoever they happen to. They don’t discriminate.
At Bunker Tactical in Richland, Kendra Harrer and her team specialize in equipping public safety professionals and individuals alike with the gear they need to respond confidently and safely to any situation.
“A lot of people I talk to feel like prepping is only for doomsday types, but preparedness is for everyone: suburban, urban, rural, male, female—it doesn’t matter. Emergencies happen to whoever they happen to. They don’t discriminate,” Harrer said.
“Everybody can learn about preparedness and be ready for whatever happens. Hopefully, it never
does—but if it does, you can be the person who helps,” she continued.
One of Harrer’s areas of expertise is in building “go” bags. A go bag contains essential survival supplies that can be grabbed in an emergency and taken on the go. Many people keep one in their car in addition to maintaining emergency supplies at home.
Even with roadside services just a phone call away these days, Harrer encourages keeping more than just a jack and jumper cables in your vehicle.
“A couple of years back, I was driving home from camping with my young daughter and niece. My van didn’t have a spare tire, and we were 15 miles outside of cell service. The tire went flat.
“Because I had two very small children, we couldn’t walk out. Luckily, I had a tent and some sleeping bags, six cans of tuna fish, a box of crackers, water, and knives. I literally had everything we needed to hang out for a couple of days until someone found us. I’m always very prepared now because I went through that.”
Food & Water
• MREs or freeze-dried meals (long shelf life, temp-stable)
• Portable water filter
• Water purification tablets or stored water
Warmth & Shelter
• Mylar blankets & hand warmers
• Extra clothes: wool socks, hat, scarf
• Compact shovel (for snow/mud)
Tools & Navigation
• Multi-tool & fixed blade knife
• Whistle
• Compass (and learn how to use it!)
Lighting & Power
• 3 flashlights (rechargeable, battery-powered, and solar)
• Solar power bank
• Portable radio
First Aid
• Standard kit plus: tourniquet, quick-clot bandages, roll-up splint, nasal airway or chest seal
• CPR/first aid training encouraged
Fire Starting & Utility
• Bic lighter
• Flint and steel
• Paracord bracelet with flint (doubles as rope)
• Pepper spray, mace, or stun gun flashlight (noise can deter animals)
" What goes into your go bag can—and should—be expanded to your home supplies.
In recent years, the Tri-Cities has seen a rise in the threat of natural disasters—particularly wildland fires, which have claimed some homes within city limits. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the fragility of the supply chains we all rely on.
Texas experienced an unusually cold winter that pushed its electrical grid to the brink—and we’ve begun to see our own local grid approaching its capacity limits.
What goes into your go bag can— and should—be expanded to your home supplies.
“For water, I know a lot of people who keep ten to twelve milk jugs cleaned, sterilized, and filled with water in their garage. Some keep 50-gallon drums if they have the space,” Harrer said, adding water purification tablets or a method for boiling or otherwise treating water should also be kept on hand."
“You should have 48 hours’ worth or more of ready-to-eat food in your house that doesn’t require cooking. Canned food is great for this. Figuring out what alternative methods you have available to cook food is important too—such as a propane stove or a grill,” she said.
Having slow-burn candles, matches, and lighters on hand is also important for both cooking and enduring prolonged power outages.
With so many people working outside the home and kids at school, it’s crucial to have a communication and emergency rendezvous plan— especially if cell networks are down. Where will you meet if you can’t get home? Who will pick up which kids?
“You have to get creative in whatever situation you’re in,” Harrer said. “Humans are very resilient, but it’s nice to have a base knowledge and be prepared to face those situations.”
Local resources to engage children (and their parents) in learning about how money works
by Laura Kostad
It’s something we give and receive every day of our lives—from putting gas in the car to go to work, to making the money that pays for the gas, food, housing, bills, investments, savings, gifts, donations, hobbies, tickets, activities, vacations, starting a business, and so much more.
Having a strong foundation in the fundamentals of finance can help one more confidently navigate an increasingly complex world connected by money exchanges.
Despite the massive role money plays in our lives, only 28 of 50 states have mandated a course in personal finance as a high school graduation requirement.
Washington is not yet one of them.
In 2024, then-Southridge High School student Ashwin Joshi spoke on the House floor in Olympia in favor of House Bill 1915, which would have made financial education a graduation prerequisite and a required component of Washington State public education.
He told the state legislature, “Most of us are brought up understanding that we need money to survive—but not learning how to manage money to thrive."
Though the fight isn’t over—and the legislation will likely be presented again—the proposal offers a chance to ask: What can parents do to educate their kids about money and the role it plays in everyday life?
ASHWIN JOSHI
Joshi decided to take matters into his own hands.
“Growing up, my peers would ask me things like, ‘My grandpa gave me $50— what should I do with it?’” he recalled.
The House voted to pass the bill, but it fell apart in the Senate over making it a requirement.
Influenced by his immigrant parents’ entrepreneurial spirit, his mother’s common-sense approach to economics, and his father’s interest

in growing investments, he founded the Southridge High School Financial Club, which focuses on students fostering one another’s money sense.
Within a few months, it became Southridge’s largest student-led club.
Joshi took it a step further by establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called ATFA—All Teens Financial Academy. ATFA provides a free curriculum and courses on various financial topics—from budgeting and saving to cryptocurrency and stock market explainers—on its web portal, which other schools and groups can adopt.
Tens of thousands of users spanning all 50 states and countries like Brazil, India, Canada, the UAE, and more have utilized ATFA’s free tools.
Joshi and his mentee, Parker Collette, who serves as CFO of ATFA, both said that one key component of financial literacy is, quite literally, reading. The Southridge Financial Club maintains a lending library of books that have been fundamental in shaping a critical understanding of money.
money but about mindset and ways of thinking that can help on one’s financial journey—and in life: Don’t have time to read? Joshi’s pro tip: check out highly rated summaries of these books on YouTube, where key concepts are explained in just 10 to 15 minutes.
Another opportunity is to check with your current bank or credit union to see what educational resources they might have available. For example, Gesa Credit Union operates studentrun branches in all of the Tri-Cities’ public high schools. Students can open checking and savings accounts and perform basic transactions right on campus.
Amber Merrill, who once served as Hanford High’s branch manager/ student intern, reflected, “A lot of my peers didn’t realize they could do transactions on their own—make deposits, check their balance, make withdrawals. It may seem like very basic financial steps, but it’s huge to realize that you can have autonomy over your own finances and to have the awareness that at some point, you’re going to need to take control of that.”
They also suggest a few books not specifically about
She added that students operating the in-school branches often become trusted resources for their peers, creating a safe environment for asking questions.
Another initiative is Gesa Credit Union’s Financial Reality Fair, a hands-on simulation offered at schools and community organizations. Participants are assigned a fictional life scenario, including a job, salary, credit score, and personal circumstances. They then make financial decisions—such as choosing housing, transportation, and childcare—based on their assigned resources. If they go over budget, they must revisit their choices with guidance from an educator or "credit union" station.
The experience teaches students practical budgeting, decision-making, and financial planning skills.
For younger children, Merrill recommends the “three buckets” method: teaching the difference between spending, saving, and giving. This can begin with earning small rewards for chores and discussing how to allocate those earnings. Simple, everyday scenarios—like choosing whether to share or save a treat—can also help children start thinking about money and decision-making.
A great place to get started is with resources available from the institutions where you already do your banking. Many have pages on their websites or other programming geared toward children.
Early financial literacy education helps youth better identify and manage opportunities now and in the future.

When thousands of athletes cross our finish line, something magical happens. It’s not just about the race—it’s about the extraordinary transformation that ripples through every corner of our community, touching lives in ways that last long after the medals are hung and the cheers fade away.
IRONMAN® doesn’t just bring athletes to our doorstep—it brings dreamers, achievers, and visionaries who remind us all what’s possible when we refuse to give up. These events showcase our community on the world stage, proving that great
things happen here and inspiring others to see what we’ve always known: the Tri-Cities is special.
Every race day, we become more than spectators—we become part of something extraordinary. Neighbors who’ve never spoken become training partners. Local businesses discover new partnerships. The local kiddos watch in awe as athletes push beyond their limits, planting seeds of their own future greatness.
These events create bridges between cultures, generations, and communities, weaving together a tapestry of human connection that makes us all stronger.
The numbers tell an inspiring story: in 2024 alone, IRONMAN® injected over $7 million directly into the Tri-Cities’ economy. But behind every dollar is a family-owned restaurant serving its best meal, a hotel providing warm hospitality, and small businesses discovering new opportunities they never imagined.
This isn’t just visitor spending—it’s investment in our shared future. Every dollar cycles through our community multiple times, supporting local families, creating jobs, and building the foundation for lasting prosperity.
The magic of hosting world-class events extends far beyond race day. These events draw visitors from across the country, and even the world, whose spending in our hotels, restaurants, and shops generates vital local tax revenue. That funding fuels the infrastructure improvements, enhanced parks and trails, upgraded transportation systems, and beautiful venues that don’t just serve visitors, they become lasting gifts to our community.
Our children play in better parks, our families enjoy improved recreational facilities, and our seniors walk safer, more beautiful trails. These investments, made possible by visitor spending and the taxes it generates, create a legacy that benefits generations to come.
From the hospitality worker who discovers a passion for event management to the local contractor who builds new skills on infrastructure projects, IRONMAN® creates career opportunities that transform lives. These aren’t just jobs—they’re stepping stones to brighter futures.
The ripple effects touch every sector: healthcare, technology, creative services, finance, and more. When our community thrives, everyone rises together.
Perhaps the most significant impact of IRONMAN® is what it does to the human spirit. Watching ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things changes how we see ourselves and what we believe is possible.
IRONMAN® shows us who we can become: a community that embraces challenge, celebrates achievement, and never stops believing in the power of human potential. These events don’t just raise our profile—they raise our spirits, our standards, and our hopes for the future.
Children who cheer for strangers at mile 20 learn that supporting others makes us stronger. Adults who volunteer at aid stations discover the joy of serving something greater than themselves. Community members who witness the determination of athletes pushing through pain find courage to face their own challenges.
As Forbes Magazine noted, strong communities share “a significant sense of purpose.” IRONMAN® gives us that purpose. When we come together to support this incredible event, we’re not just organizing a race— we’re building our cathedral, brick by brick, dream by dream.
Every volunteer who gives their weekend, every local business that opens its doors, every neighbor who cheers from their front yard becomes part of something magnificent. Together, we prove that when a community believes in itself, anything is possible.
When the world watches IRONMAN® athletes cross our finish line, they’re not just seeing a race, they’re witnessing the heart and soul of the Tri-Cities, a community that believes in greatness. And that belief, more than any economic impact or infrastructure improvement, is what will carry us forward into an even brighter tomorrow.
When we dare to dream big, amazing things happen.
Moving 2,500 cyclists through a course that spans 56 miles across a community is quite a feat. Navigating vehicle traffic around the course is even trickier. The bike portion of the IRONMAN® race is like a big parade of fit athletes and it lasts most of the morning. But the course is well marked, intersections are controlled, and alternative routes are available for motorists. If you need to drive somewhere, the most important step is a little pre-planning.
Three key areas to be aware of
George Washington Way sees heavy bike usage from about 6:55 AM to 12:45 PM. Don’t panic though, most lanes will stay open! But seriously, between 6:55 AM and 12:45 PM, this area will be busier than a coffee shop on Monday morning. Plan ahead and save yourself the headache.
Queensgate Area will have cyclists cruising through from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. Perfect time for that second cup of coffee at home!
West Richland top of Belmont/ Paradise to Bombing Range/Van Giesen joins the party from 8:06 AM to 12:35 PM.

After 1:00 PM, it’s back to business as usual! The roads will be clear, and you can resume your normal driving adventures.
Remember, the bike portion uses “rolling closures.” Think of it like a wave passing through (a big wave). Roads reopen shortly after the last cyclist pedals past each section, so you won’t be stuck forever!
This event brings millions of dollars into our community. It showcases our destination in a healthy, positive way, and over time everyone benefits. Plan ahead to make race day as stress-free as possible for everyone - athletes AND drivers alike. Thanks for being awesome and sharing the road!

Visit Tri-Cities is proud to launch a new program this year to stimulate healthy lifestyles by creating an opportunity for two local athletes to participate in the Ironman® 70.3® Washington Tri-Cities triathlon, taking place on September 21.
IM TRI Scholarship recipients
Maricela Vargas and Michael McKinney were selected from a competitive pool of applicants who demonstrated exceptional determination and passion for triathlon, despite facing personal challenges that had previously limited their participation.
“Hosting events like IRONMAN® inspire people to improve their health, set personal goals, and achieve them. As we saw this positive swell in our community surrounding the race, we felt there was a unique opportunity to do more than just talk about this new source of healthy energy,” said Kevin Lewis, CEO of Visit Tri-Cities.
Through generous support from Visit Tri-Cities and other local businesses, the scholarship package provides McKinney and Vargas with race entry fee coverage, a six-month membership to Columbia Basin Racquet Club, three weekly one–hour personal training sessions, specialized triathlon coaching, access to open water swim training, PNOE metabolic and VO2 testing to optimize their regimens, a six-month membership to Augment Wellness Recovery, and one pair of running shoes from Runner’s Soul.
"
"As we saw this positive swell in our community surrounding the race, we felt there was a unique opportunity to do more than just talk about this new source of healthy energy."
“Through the IM TRI program, we help fuel transformational growth in our community, one individual at a time. The program builds hope that no matter where we are in life, each of us can become better versions of ourselves. IM TRI lets us see the vision of a healthy future in the eyes of someone who may not have had that opportunity without it. And with it, we celebrate the ideals that make our community so successful,” Lewis said.
When 28-year-old Maricela Vargas of Kennewick picked up running a year ago, she never imagined it would lead to competing in a triathlon.
“I’m almost hitting 30, and I was sort of in that midlife crisis of asking ‘What am I doing to take care of myself mentally and physically?’ I wanted to incorporate more of a healthy lifestyle as I grow older,” Vargas recalled.
Then she learned about the Visit Tri-Cities scholarship opportunity to participate in the upcoming Ironman® 70.3® Washington Tri-Cities event and she decided to let fate do the rest.
“It wasn’t in my plans; this was totally unexpected. I had just signed up for my first marathon, and I decided to give the scholarship a try and see if it was in my path to go on this journey,” Vargas said.
She doesn’t come from an athletic background. Growing up, she wasn’t able to participate in organized sports like many of her peers due to financial constraints. A childhood fear of swimming in open water also kept her from straying far from shore.
As an adult, she has found meaning through her work as a vocational counselor at the local Department of Health and Human Services office.
“I work with people who have physical, sensory, mental, emotional or learning disabilities from all backgrounds. My job is to help them make something out of their diagnosis and to tap into their abilities.”
Now, she is pushing her own abilities to their limits.
Three months in, with countless hours at the Columbia Basin Racquet Club’s gym and hundreds of miles under her feet and wheels, Vargas said her body is tired as race day approaches.
“I’ve really surprised myself that I’ve kept up with the schedule. It's timeconsuming, but I just have to stay on track. It’s really easy to get distracted, but it’s important for me to focus because it’s going to show on race day,” she said.
“I’m definitely pushing my endurance both physically and mentally, but I am thankful for this opportunity to grow and I’ve realized I’m willing and committed to this.”
Diving into swim training with the help of a coach provided through the scholarship has likewise been a challenge, but also a boost of confidence.
“I want to face my fears and make sure I overcome the barriers and limitations that I’ve put on myself. It’s made me realize I’m capable of more things than I tell myself I am. I’m gaining more confidence in who I am and what I can do. I’ve realized that with time I can do anything.”
In addition to hosting an informal running club with friends on Saturdays, Vargas has been posting clips from her training journey to her TikTok account, @Maricela_436. She said she started it to share her IRONMAN® journey with others and record the experience to look back on later in life.
“I didn’t realize I would inspire so many people. I have a lot of friends and community members and also people from other states who write and tell me they’re cheering for me and that they’re motivated to get out and be active. It means a lot.”
MICHAEL MCKINNEY
Michael McKinney is the 52-year-old owner of Riverside
"
"I realized the real equalizer is my body—it comes down to me."
“I’m used to pushing it to the limit the whole time in CrossFit, but that’s not what it takes in endurance racing,” he said. “I have drive and am not willing to give up very easily, but this is a whole different level of ‘I won’t give up.’”
He recalled test-riding four different bikes to use in competition, and when he was done testing each one on the same course, there was only a minute’s difference between the times.
“I realized the real equalizer is my body—it comes down to me.”
He added, “It used to be I would say my body hurts from being 52 years old; now my body hurts from being sore and that’s a good feeling.”
Though McKinney looks forward to crossing the finish line, he said he is finding ways to enjoy the journey and the pain that goes with it.
“There is so much to be learned from falling down and getting back up on those bad days in training. I get asked, ‘What happens when you don’t want to train?’ And the answer is: I do it anyway.”
He said it’s been difficult to carve out time to commit to something that’s just for him, being an active parent who has always put his kids’ needs first. He hopes his IRONMAN® journey has inspired them.
“It’s letting them see that hard work and the drive it takes to get somewhere in life instead of a quitting attitude. It’s showing them that I can have a bad day and realize it’s just one bad day, then get back to it and continue to do hard things the next day. Meanwhile, I’m still taking them to their baseball games, basketball camp and doing the things we do and they know I’m up at 4:30 so I can get my training in.”
Likewise, his kids have come alongside to support their dad. “Running is my arch nemesis,” McKinney said. One of his boys is on the school cross-country team and has done course pre-runs with him ahead of events.
“I’m super lucky to have the support of people around me. You find out who’s on your side when you do stuff like this. It’s humbling,” McKinney said.
Despite a packed schedule, he said he’s still finding time for fun and keeping track of his sobriety along the way.
He says you can’t buy personal growth: “It’s just you and time.”
Michael posts about his training progress on the Riverside Collision Facebook page @riversidecollision.
Some of the most significant benefits of hosting an event like IRONMAN® are seen in the community pride, enthusiasm and inspired health the event helps generate. The IM TRI program from Visit Tri-Cities contributes to those benefits in a tangible way and celebrates the ideals that make our community so successful.

The energy of the event, the joy of meeting so many new faces, and the satisfaction of knowing I played a part in bringing such an exciting event to town made it all worthwhile. It was a blast, and I’m really hoping it opens the door for countless more events, showing everyone this city is definitely ready for more!

It was a lot of fun supporting my mom and other athletes with my x-country team. It was the best team-work effort for both sides!
- Lucas York, Hanford High School X-Country Team
Being involved with my Triathlete wife, I know the importance of the volunteers during IRONMAN® events. I was able to volunteer as Water Safety Captain in 2024 and again in 2025. Meeting so many athletes and fellow volunteers was a great experience. Our Kayak/ SUP team practiced all summer and escorted over 800 swimmers down the swim course as well as the 2250 swimmers on RACE DAY. Paddling down the river, in the dark to the start line, with all 60 of the volunteers was SURREAL! It’s something we’ll never forget. The excitement and anticipation from everyone was monumental. - Jon Spangle , Richland Resident

Dear Fellow Baker,
Food has an incredible power to transport us back in time. A scent or taste can instantly conjure cherished moments—perhaps the aroma of freshly baked cookies reminds you of baking with your grandma, perched on a stool as a child. Maybe the flavor of roasted chicken brings you back to lazy Sunday dinners, sharing hours around the kitchen table with your children, who are now grown and on their own.
Undeniably, food is powerful. It represents love and connection— and, most importantly, it can create everlasting memories. Passing down a treasured recipe to the next generation is a wonderful gift that ensures the creation of memories for years to come. If your family doesn’t have such a recipe—don’t worry! Here’s a family favorite from my kitchen to yours:

The summer garden twist on chocolate cupcakes you didn’t know you needed
First published in the Summer 2019 issue of Taylored Living Magazine, this recipe quickly became one of my personal favorites. Over the years, I’ve refined it into something even more practical, flavorful, and foolproof—and I’m thrilled to share this updated version with you. When your zucchini plants decide to take over the world, it’s time to get creative. Forget the loaf pan—these moist, rich cupcakes (or muffins!) bake up perfectly every time, no guesswork required. With a touch of pineapple, a warm blend of spices, and a decadent hit of dark chocolate, this recipe transforms humble garden ingredients into a treat everyone will ask for twice.
• 3 cups shredded zucchini, with all their garden-fresh juices
• 1/2 cup canned crushed pineapple, with juice
• 3 eggs
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 21/2 cups all-purpose flour
• ¹⁄₃ cup 100% unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 Tbsp baking powder
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 heaping tsp ground cinnamon
• 1 heaping tsp ground nutmeg
• 1 heaping tsp kosher salt
• 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (convection bake). Line 24 standard muffin tins with cupcake liners.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
3. In another large bowl, gently mix the wet ingredients: eggs, oil, vanilla, shredded zucchini (juice and all), and crushed pineapple (with juice). Stir just until incorporated—do not overmix.
4. Fold in half of the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until the batter resembles a runny brownie mix. Add the remaining dry mix and fold again until the batter becomes thick and sticky but scoopable.
5. Using a standard ice cream scoop, portion one scoop of batter into each cupcake liner.
6. Bake for 23 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
7. Cool on a wire rack. Enjoy as-is— or dress them up!
Frosted: Add chocolate fudge frosting and top with chopped pecans or flaky salt.
Muffin-style: Skip the frosting and enjoy warm with coffee or a cold glass of milk.
Yields: 24 moist, garden-inspired cupcakes
Whether you call them cupcakes or muffins, one thing’s for sure: the loaf pan won’t be missed.
Whether you're hosting a holiday soirée or enjoying a cozy night by the fire, there's no better way to toast the season than with a classic cocktail—especially when it comes with a fresh, festive twist.
This year, we’re bringing back your favorite recipes to help you celebrate in style. From herb-infused mixers to bubbly delights, these cocktails are perfect for every kind of holiday moment. So grab your shaker, your favorite glass, and let’s raise a toast to joy, warmth, and the spirit of the season!
2oz rye/bourbon
1oz fresh lemon juice
1/2-1oz simple syrup or maple syrup
1 egg white (optional)
Angostura bitters
Combine whiskey, lemon juice, syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker. If using an egg white, keep a tight grip on the shaker as the foam will expand and want to push the top off. Shake for 10-15 seconds. Add ice and shake again. Pour into a frosted glass or over a large ice cube. Add the bitters on top and swirl into the foam. Express lemon peel onto the rim. Garnish as desired with lemon peel and/or fresh rosemary.
1 grapefruit
2 oz silver tequila (may use reposado or añejo if desired)
1oz triple sec
1oz simple syrup
1-2 sprigs of thyme
Fever Tree Tonic Water or sparkling grapefruit mixer orange bitters
Combine tequila, triple sec, orange bitters and simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake for 10-15 seconds. Strain into frosted glass or over ice. Add the tonic water or the sparkling grapefruit mixer to fill the glass. Cut thin sections of grapefruit and lay one on top of the drink. Garnish with fresh thyme so you can enjoy the fragrance as you drink.
NON-ALCOHOLIC ALTERNATIVE:
Skip the triple sec, simple syrup, tequila, and Fever Tree and use triple sec syrup (which is alcohol free), soda water (fresh grapefruit juice optional), and agave syrup to enjoy a similar tasting drink without the alcohol.
2oz Hendricks Gin (or preferred)
0.75oz simple syrup
4-5 basil leaves
1/2oz vermouth
1oz lime juice
Muddle basil in shaker. Pour the gin over the basil and let sit for 1 minute. Add simple syrup, lime juice, vermouth, and ice and shake for 10-15 seconds. Pour and strain into glass over a large ice cube. May add Fever Tree tonic water for a more bubbly experience. Express lime peel over the rim. Garnish with lime wedge, lime peel, or cucumber.
NON-ALCOHOLIC ALTERNATIVE:
Skip the gin and vermouth and simply add muddled basil to a pitcher of cucumber water. Pour and add a little soda water if desired.
1 sugar cube Angostura bitters orange or lemon favorite champagne
Peel the orange or lemon for the twist and juice some of the fruit into the glass by squeezing through a strainer to keep pulp out. 1/2 oz is enough. Put a few drops of the Angostura bitters on the sugar cube and add to the bottom of the glass. Pour champagne over the cube and fill the glass to desired level. Express the lemon or orange peel over the rim and garnish. Watch as the champagne bubbles away from the sugar cube at the bottom. This simple cocktail gets sweeter as you drink it.

Elijah Family Homes, based in Kennewick, Washington, stands as a quietly powerful force in the Tri-Cities community—offering not just housing, but hope, healing, and a pathway to self-sufficiency for families deeply impacted by addiction and poverty. Over its two decades of service, EFH has filled a critical gap: addressing the needs of families who often fall through the cracks of public assistance systems due to criminal records or substance abuse histories. By pairing long-term transitional housing with intensive, personalized support, EFH is transforming the community for generations to come.
Originating from a faith-based initiative at Christ the King Church, EFH was established in 2005. Though grounded in spiritual values, clients are not required to share religious beliefs or participate in services, ensuring a welcoming space for all. With a mission “to foster hope, dignity, and self-sufficiency through stable housing and supportive services for families seeking recovery,” EFH strives to mitigate the cycle of homelessness and addiction in Benton and Franklin counties. Since its inception, EFH has expanded from one housing unit to twelve and has supported more than 200 families over the past 20 years.
EFH recognizes that recovery can’t happen in isolation. Its flagship Transition to Success program provides up to three years of stable, affordable housing, coupled with one-on-one case management. Designed for parents who have maintained one full year of sobriety, the program breaks down barriers by focusing first on basic life skills, then gradually building toward job readiness, financial literacy, and parenting competencies. EFH Executive Director Lisa Godwin explains, “Stable
housing is important for kiddos when they’re in school”—highlighting how everyday consistency boosts educational achievement, emotional well-being, and family cohesion.
Beyond housing, the organization operates the Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP), which serves women who may have used substances during pregnancy.
Over a three-year period, these women receive intensive case management, parenting support, and assistance in connecting to recovery and health services. This work helps to break generational cycles of trauma and substance use, giving both parents and children a much stronger start. For many participants, this program is transformative—not only reducing the risk of prenatal exposure, but also sustaining recovery while instilling financial management, home organization, and parentchild bonding skills. PCAP’s ripple effects can be seen across medical, educational, and child welfare systems, as fewer families require ongoing crisis intervention.
" Stable housing is important for kiddos when they’re in school.
EFH also demonstrates strong operational stewardship and thoughtful scaling. The organization moved to their Kennewick offices in February of 2025 to be across the street from the new recovery center. It operates on a sliding rent scale tied to participant income, reinforcing accountability and fiscal responsibility. Partnerships with Lexar Homes, local Rotary clubs, and volunteer groups have positioned EFH as a trusted, mission-driven steward of both public and philanthropic resources.
Elijah Family Homes recently broke ground on the Sunrise Community Cottage Village, a new neighborhood designed specifically for clients participating in the programs. These small, thoughtfully designed cottages provide a stepping-stone toward independent
living, complete with community spaces where residents can attend workshops and continue building life skills. The project is a testament to what collaboration between nonprofits, civic organizations like TriCities Sunrise Rotary, and local businesses can accomplish.
EFH continues to unite the Tri-Cities community through a series of engaging events that celebrate recovery, connection, and transformation. Kicking off this season of impact is Dri in the Tri, a free, family-friendly sober concert held on Saturday, September 6 at John Dam
Plaza. This inspiring afternoon of live music and community resources will also feature the debut of Dri in the Tri magazine—highlighting stories of hope, local recovery services, and upcoming events.
" They are not just fundraisers—they are celebrations of healing, unity, and hope.
Next, EFH will host “This is Our Story,” the 10th Annual Community Breakfast, on Friday, October 24 at the HAPO Center
Guests will hear firsthand accounts of families overcoming addiction and homelessness through EFH’s support. This event serves as a moving reminder of the lasting change made possible by community generosity.
Creative connection continues with Snip & Sip, a Thanksgiving floral workshop on November 23 at Vision Venue, where participants craft centerpieces while supporting EFH’s mission.
The organization’s impact is measured not only by the number of families housed or supported, but also by the long-term success of those families. Many former participants have gone on to pursue education, stable employment, and homeownership.
