FORTIFY
Editor’s Note: Spring/Summer 2025
by Mary Taylor
My instincts tell me I can’t always be on high alert. Back in my law enforcement days, if my defenses were down, my alertness level was “code white,” making me more vulnerable to surprise. Rather than being completely unobservant, I maintained a heightened awareness. Even then, I knew constant vigilance wasn’t sustainable, so I put safeguards in place to prevent the unexpected. I lock my doors and windows at night. I don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. I get to know my neighbors and the people my children spend time with.
I see similar instincts in my boys when they play. Whether they’re hiding in a neighbor’s bushes during an imaginary army mission or building block fortresses on the living room floor, they always establish a base—the heart of their world—and fortify it with layers of protection. Even subconsciously, they understand that to truly relax, they need safeguards.
When I asked my team and our community what fortify means to them, the answers were as varied as they were insightful. For some, it meant enrichment and strengthening; for others, preservation and protection. At its core, fortification is about recognizing that none of us are invincible. It’s about identifying the cracks in our foundation and putting in the work—whether that means asking for help, prioritizing selfcare, or finding solutions instead of excuses—to prevent those weaknesses from catching us off guard.
In the Tri-Cities, fortification is happening all around us. Communities are commissioning local artists to paint murals as a deterrent to vandalism and graffiti (p.14 ). A thriving business is redefining success by prioritizing family over profit (p.22). A mother-daughter duo is teaching kids the power of a positive mindset (p.45). Parents are rethinking traditions like sleepovers to protect their children’s well-being (p.50). Time and again we’re reminded that true strength often requires sacrifice (p.59).
This season, as we explore what it means to fortify ourselves, our homes, and our communities, I invite you to reflect on your own safeguards. Are they protecting you or holding you back? Are your defenses built from fear or intention? My hope is that these stories inspire you to not only reinforce what matters most but also to create spaces where you can truly let your guard down—knowing you’ve done the work to preserve the heart of your world.
Your friend,
Mary Taylor
FRANKI ANDERSON
by Danielle Kleist
Dreams really can come true. Franki Anderson started with a dream and turned it into an inspirational reality that is making a big impact in the community.
Franki knew from a young age that she would be a performing violinist. She began her classic violin training at 10 years old. She later played for the Mid-Columbia Symphony and was offered scholarships to several different universities. Franki chose Eastern Washington University, since she could also perform in the Spokane Symphony while
attending college. However, one dream turned her entire world upside down.
" ...Franki came home to tell her parents that for $800, she was going to beauty school instead of college.
In 1984, the night after Franki accepted her college scholarship, she had a dream where she was doing hair as a career. The next day, Franki came home to tell her parents that for $800, she was going to beauty school instead of college. She immediately started making phone calls to withdraw from her scholarship and agreements. Franki knew that, despite all her natural talent and training, pursuing the violin professionally
FEMALE FOUNDER
was not her calling. However, she taught and played in the local symphony to maintain her skill.
Franki excelled in beauty school and started working at the JCPenny’s Salon. Five years later, she began leasing a station, purchased a studio in 1991, and in December of 1997 Franki founded a second salon, Franki & Co.
At the same time, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Franki regularly attended her treatment sessions at the Tri-Cites Cancer Center. There, she saw the horrible side effects of cancer treatment and recognized the need for wigs and hair pieces for cancer
patients. Franki knew that she had found her true calling and decided to expand her scope of practice. She has been supplying cancer patients with these services since 1998.
For the last 23 years, Franki has gone every Monday to the Cancer Center to meet with patients. She provides head shavings, hair cutting, wig trimmings, and wig fittings. Franki says, “It’s one thing to do hair, but being able to give people confidence, to make them feel beautiful, and to make them feel good about themselves during a difficult time is something special.”
"For the last 23 years, Franki has gone every Monday to the Cancer Center to meet with patients.
Today, Franki & Co. is a full-service salon providing traditional services such as massages, facials, all things hair (coloring, cutting, relaxing, perming), and waxing. In addition to the wig and hair pieces in the salon, one of Franki's team members, Sandy Warner of A Better Fit, provides breast prosthetics and mastectomy bras for cancer patients.
Franki founded a salon but created so much more, a community of people who are connected through the special services she provides. Her positive impact on cancer patients over the last 26 years is truly unmeasurable. She also brings awareness to other local businesses by displaying their merchandise. This includes Pink Pearl Boutique, Mama Divas Handbags, and Jody's Park Lane Jewelry.
Ann Wright, Franki’s nominator says, “Franki provides invaluable guidance on hair styling and wigfitting, helping patients navigate hair loss with compassion and
expertise. Her deep connections with patients and their families highlight her commitment to making a difference.” As Franki explains, “I hope to inspire young women to believe that anything is possible and to listen to their hearts.” By listening to her own heart and having the courage to follow through on her dream, Franki has given the community so much. From the music Franki shared in the symphony, the students she taught to play the violin, patients to whom she has brought joy, and to all her regular clients who she has made feel beautiful, there is no question that Franki Anderson is a Favorite Female Founder.
"Her positive impact on cancer patients over the last 26 years is truly unmeasurable.

Transforming Tri-Cities
The Power of Public Art
by Laura Kostad
How Murals and Creative Revitalization are Enriching Communities, Boosting Tourism, and Reducing Graffiti
“A
rt has the power to transform a community. It can reshape public spaces and enrich lives. It can add a magical, fun element of surprise. Public art can also take drab areas and transform them into unique places that draw visitors,” says Port of Kennewick Deputy CEO, Tana Bader-Inglima.
A
Over the past decade, the port has been passionately focused on urban revitalization efforts across Kennewick. The first buildings are going up at the Vista Field redevelopment, which will convert the 103-acre former municipal airport into a vibrant place to live, shop and play. Meanwhile, across town, Columbia Gardens Urban Wine and Artisan Village, located off Columbia Drive near the Cable Bridge, has set a new tone for the city’s commercial riverfront sector.
A defining element of these efforts has been artistic focal points. At Columbia Gardens, the port commissioned two large murals celebrating Latino life, culture and critical involvement in the region’s agricultural and food processing industries. The murals canvas the parking lot-facing side of two winery buildings onsite.
In 2022, neighboring KIE Supply Corp commissioned Heidi Elkington to paint a mural on the east wall of its building bordering Columbia
Gardens. “We really wanted it to be a love letter to the community,” says KIE Vice President, Amelia Kittson. “We had been tossing this idea around for a couple years; we kept getting tagged with graffiti on that wall.”
Since the mural was completed, Kittson notes, “The taggers have stayed away. They have tagged other things on our property, but have left that wall alone.”

UPTOWN ALLEYWAY MURAL BY JOEY ARMSTRONG IN MEMORY OF RAY CHIN & DUSTIN STECKER
"CONSTRUCTION OF STAIRS OF EQUALITY & INCLUSION" BY ROSA CRUZ
"PIÑATA" BY ANDREA BARBOSA-MORENO
"Murals have been popping up all over Tri-Cities in recent years, some along busy thoroughfares, others in alleyways and even more places off the beaten path that encourage residents and visitors alike to explore new corners of our community.
This past year, the City of Pasco allocated $25,000 from its lodging tax fund to reimburse downtown businesses up to $5,000 for mural installations.
Pasco’s Assistant City Manager Angela Pashon, says murals contribute to increasing tourism in the city’s downtown core. “People come to see art. When you bring more people in, there’s less down time for people doing things they shouldn’t be doing. If you can bring action and life to a space, that’s ultimately going to help reduce crime, including graffiti.”
While it’s too early to confirm if the program correlates with a decrease in graffiti vandalism, Pashon notes that since the city created beauty by wrapping its utility boxes with artistic designs, they’ve avoided graffiti and haven’t had to replace any more boxes.
Blank canvases, for better or worse, invite people to leave their mark. Perhaps by adorning this undercapitalized vertical real estate with art that reflects the community's culture or that of the hosting business, public art fosters a sense of representation and inclusion. This fortifies community identity, fills negative space, and cultivates beauty for all to enjoy.
Let’s keep the art flowing, Tri-Cities.

"Seeing family members return reinforces the trust and connection we’ve built."
This personalized approach is why so many patients bring their daughters, mothers, and even grandmothers to New U. The clinic welcomes patients as young as 12 (if they have started menstruating), fostering multigenerational care that strengthens family bonds and ensures continuity in healthcare. "It’s incredibly rewarding to care for multiple generations within a family," says Dr. Fidino. "Seeing family members return reinforces the trust and connection we’ve built. Their referrals mean the world to us."
& FOUNDER
Unlike traditional aesthetics offices, New U takes a whole-body approach. Many women first visit the clinic to address hormonal imbalances, weight management, or overall wellness, and once they start feeling like themselves again, they naturally explore aesthetic treatments. "For example, I often work with women concerned about weight or hormonal imbalances," Dr. Fidino explains. "As we address these internal issues, confidence flourishes. Many then explore aesthetic treatments, completing their transformation—inside and out."
Of course, this exceptional care wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated team. Dr. Fidino emphasizes the importance of staff morale, teamwork, and communication, ensuring employees feel valued and supported. "We encourage open communication, celebrate milestones, and build a culture of support and shared values," she says. "This creates a passionate team that truly cares about our mission."
With an increasing demand for its integrated approach to women’s health and beauty, New U is expanding! The Yakima location (2407 W Washington
Avenue, Suite C) is now open and operates Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The newest Kennewick location (10973 W 10th Avenue) will be opening soon, with a grand opening celebration planned for June. Additionally, New U is actively exploring two locations in Idaho, with more details to come later this year.
With patients already traveling from Yakima and Idaho, these expansions will make New U’s expert care even more accessible. Virtual consultations for hormone therapy and weight loss ensure that women everywhere can benefit from Dr. Fidino’s holistic approach.
At New U, the mission goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about empowering women through lifelong partnerships in health, confidence, and beauty.

Glam & Go
by Amy Rene with Amy Rene Makeup Artistry
Long lasting makeup for special occasions is key to looking fresh from start to finish. Here are my top picks and favorite products for makeup that lasts through hugs, fun, and photos!
Prep is key: Begin with a primer like Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder in the color Universal. It smooths the skin and controls oil helping your makeup stay in place.
Layer it: Layer a cream blush under a powder blush. This gives color extra staying power and looks extra great in flash photo.
Lock it in: Use a setting powder like Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder on areas that tend to get shiny. Finish with a setting spray, such as Urban Decay All Nighter, to lockeverything in place.
Simple items for touch-ups: Get a disposable cotton round and load a tiny bit of powder into it. Fold in half and pack in your purse alone with a lip color. Stay looking fresh day and night.
The Heart of MARKET NORTH
by Angela Miller
What started as home bazaar and outdoor plant sales with a group of friends has since evolved into Market North, a successful business that has been serving the Tri-Cities for over four years. While many might consider owner Britany Tapani a true entrepreneur, she doesn't necessarily see herself that way. A hobby once her seven children were all in school, continues to be just that: her hobby, but on a larger, more formal scale. Britany takes pride in her unique business model, one that is meant to accommodate her family. “[Market North] has to fit my life,” Tapani says, “My family is my top priority.”

"Britany’s business model has allowed her to have a creative outlet while prioritizing a family first mentality.
Several years ago, Britany and her friends held sales on her family’s property, offering handmade crafts, second hand or “found items,” as well as homemade goodies. The frustration of setting everything up outdoors only to take it back down again each night prompted her and her husband, Brad, to build a shop. In December 2020, she evolved her passion for creativity and fueled her many interests by officially opening Market North. Even among the chaos of the pandemic, Britany’s business thrived.
Market North is currently home to a cozy boutique building containing kitchen items, home and holiday decor, baby and kids clothing, toys, women’s clothing, linens, lotions, candles, cards, and a coffee shop. Across the lot, you can find a nursery containing indoor and outdoor plants, shrubs, and various perennials and annuals for sale. Nestled between the boutique building and the nursery, you can enjoy patio seating, a yard space with corn hole and a fire pit, as well as some inspirational pathway gardens for customers to walk through that wrap around behind the store. Seasonal items such as pumpkins
in the fall and you-pick flowers in the spring and summer are also available.
Britany’s business model has allowed her to have a creative outlet while prioritizing a family first mentality. Her work day starts once her children are at school and ends the moment they step off the bus. Having Market North on her property allows Britany to maintain a work-home balance. Despite
being closed during summer and the month of January, the schedule has never negatively affected business. “People are supportive when you’re doing it for your family,” Britany shared. Currently, Market North is open every Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though hours may vary as Britany and Brad continuously assess their lifestyle and adjust to what works best for their family. Britany is fortunate to have her manager, Felicity, and four additional employees to run the store during operating hours. Typically, Tapani sticks to more of the behind the scene responsibilities of the business. This leaves her weekends free to spend time with her family, though she does tend to work on special event days. Tapani also credits her friends, Kati and Britni, who have helped her stay motivated, volunteering their time staging the boutique and traveling to Las Vegas Market to help Britany pick out chic boutique pieces for the next season.
With family being her main focus, it’s only fitting that Britany’s husband and children are in on the action. Her three youngest children help with weeding, repotting, and cleaning.

Her teenage girls can be found cashiering or helping at the coffee stand, while her youngest son takes on the role of chicken farmer, selling his farm fresh eggs in the boutique. Britany is pleased that the market allows her children the opportunity to develop retail and communication skills. Brad is also a huge help to the business, building needed structures, creating places for Britany to garden, and overall bringing the vision to life. Even Britany’s daughter in law is one of her four employees!
“My goal is to get people to slow down and do things together,” Britany shares. She hopes customers will enjoy a scenic country drive, while discovering special finds at the boutique, or even dive into a new hobby such as gardening. Either way, Britany has created a space where she hopes people can spend time with friends and relax. With her unique business model, Britany sets an example for her children about prioritizing family. When asked what she would like her children to gain from her duality of mother and business owner, Britany hopes her children will have similar priorities as they age, saying, “family always comes first.”

SaddleUp FOR A CAUSE
by Laura Kostad
For 77 years, the Benton Franklin Fair and Horse Heaven Round-Up (BFFR) has been the "Best Week of Summer" for generations of Tri-Citians, the greater Columbia Basin, and beyond. More than a seasonal celebration of top entertainment, rodeo and livestock shows, BFFR carries on a proud tradition of giving back in a big waypartnering with local nonprofits and organizations that make a difference.
employees, a 13-person board of directors, and more than 500 volunteers. The BFFR doesn’t own or manage the fairgrounds but is a tenant for part of the summer each year. The nonprofit organization makes the fair experience possible for more than 123,000 guests from across the nation, with attendees from 41 states in 2024 alone.
"BFFR carries on a proud tradition of giving back in a big way."
Though named after the two counties it primarily serves, BFFR is produced by the Benton Franklin Fair Association, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) supported by year-round
BFFR has an annual economic impact of $18.5 million, contributing $2.7 million in tax revenue to local, state, and federal governments. The Market Stock Auction generated over $1.5 million last year for local 4-H, Grange, and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members, making it the largest-grossing youth livestock auction in the state.
Rotary Club of Pasco-Kennewick
A 32-year partner of the Benton Franklin Fair, the Pasco-Kennewick Rotary Club is known for its famous elephant ears. This past year, they produced 8,000 elephant ears, generating nearly $60,000 in five days after expenses.
“It’s not about making money—it’s about what we can give back. Every dollar you spend goes back to the community,” said Tom Floyd, foundation chair.
Proceeds enabled the club to donate over $33,000 in community grants and scholarships. pkrotary.org

In the Barn & Arena
Every dollar spent on fair admission, refreshments, and entertainment tickets directly supports BFFR's mission of giving back to the community. The funds raised not only fuel the fair's charitable efforts but also benefit the nonprofit organizations it partners with. Last year alone, local nonprofits, service clubs, and community organizations earned nearly $195,000 at the fair to further their own missions.
A champion for the community, the BFFR is a proud sponsor of the Columbia Basin Junior Livestock Show, the Basin City Freedom Rodeo and the Mariachi & More Festival, among other events. It supports Therapeutic Riding of Tri-Cities (TROT), the Arc of Tri-Cities Partners 'N Pals summer day camp, and hosts the Rascal Rodeo, a noteworthy event for individuals with special needs.
Additional initiatives include annual scholarships, anti-bullying assemblies in local schools, support for Mid-Columbia Libraries' Summer Reading Programs, and donating thousands of free tickets to enable more families to attend the fair.
Beyond the barn and arena, approximately 1,300 youth and adults entered nearly 9,000 items in the fair this past summer, ranging from fine art and sewing to LEGO creations, dioramas, posters, fruits and vegetables, canned goods, and culinary delights.
With its roots in agriculture, combating food insecurity is an extension of its mission. BFFR has helped Second Harvest procure 160,000 pounds of food during its 16 year partnership, and sponsored multiple raised garden beds for the Build-A-Bed-Feed-A-Family program at Habitat for Humanity developments. BFFR has also raised more than $224,000 for breast cancer preventive care and treatment for local residents, in addition to partnering with the American Red Cross to host blood drives and encourage participation.
Kiwanis Club of Kennewick
One of the founding partners of the Benton Franklin Fair, the Kiwanis Club of Kennewick has been involved for 76 years. The club manages ticket sales and main gate operations, organizing 160 volunteer shifts during fair week.
“It’s a major undertaking that generates about $10,000 in revenue,” said Bob Kelly, finance chair.
These funds support mentorship programs in local elementary schools and fund $50,000 in scholarships annually.

Columbia Ability Alliance Breaking Barriers
One of BFFR’s key nonprofit partners is the Columbia Ability Alliance (CAA), which works to break down barriers to employment, inclusion, and everyday life for individuals with disabilities and other marginalized communities, including veterans, formerly incarcerated individuals, and those recovering from substance abuse. CAA provides specialized job training, life skills development, and social enrichment programs.
CAA owns three for-profit businesses whose proceeds support its nonprofit initiatives. Each year, BFFR seeks new ways to engage with CAA. In 2024, CAA was selected as Grand Marshal of the annual fair kickoff parade through downtown Kennewick.
“Clients and their families were at the front of the parade, handing out candy. We loved the recognition for our organization,” said CAA CEO Michael Novakovich.
CAA clients also played a key role in administering a daily welcome wagon, greeting fair vendors and providing complimentary snacks and water.
“My wife and I had the great pleasure of joining our clients on Thursday. Every single vendor had a huge smile on their face, and we heard things like, ‘We love seeing you every day—you make our days brighter.’ It was powerful. It was incredible,” Novakovich said.
BFFR also partners with CAA’s Opportunity Kitchen to cater the VIP tent and works with CAA’s Paradise Water Company to provide hydration stations throughout the fairgrounds. Additionally, some CAA clients are employed for grounds maintenance.
“These experiences contribute to creating a more accessible and highly visible community,” Novakovich stated.
COLUMBIA ABILITY ALLIANCE
4-H: Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders
BFFR provides valuable opportunities for local youth through its partnership with 4-H Clubs, helping them develop essential life skills.
One standout 4-H alumna is Washington State Representative April Connors. At just nine years old, she showed her first steer, George Washington.
“My parents, who had no background in agriculture, wanted to get my sisters and me involved in our new community after moving to the Tri-Cities from California,” Connors recalled.
4-H, and later FFA, became a cornerstone of Connors’ childhood. She participated in public speaking competitions and showed steers at the Benton Franklin Fair every year.
“I was able to buy my first two vehicles with the earnings from my projects. Those early lessons in financial management, responsibility, and goal-setting have stayed with me. It’s not just about agriculture—it’s about developing real-life skills that will benefit kids in any career path,” she said.
“I credit so much of who I am today—including my role as a State Representative—to the lessons I learned through 4-H and FFA. These programs taught me responsibility, leadership, public speaking, financial management, and the value of hard work. They gave me the confidence to step into leadership roles, the skills to communicate effectively, and the foundation to serve my community in meaningful ways.”
The Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo is more than just an event—it's a vital force that unites and uplifts the TriCities and beyond. Without sponsors, partnerships, and community support, the fair wouldn't be possible. With your help, this legacy of giving back will continue for generations to come.

Dear Fellow Baker,
Spring is in the air and there’s no time like the present to refresh our baking tools and ingredients. Let’s be honest, we can use most of the shelf-stable ingredients in our pantry past their expiration dates without any hiccups. No judgment here. Our leavening agents, however, may give us a bit of baking trouble if not used when fresh. Use the information below to decide if it may be time to say good-bye to two of your pantry baking staples:
Baking Powder
Dispose of (or test potency) 3-6 months after opening.
Test: Add a bit of hot water to one teaspoon of baking powder. If it bubbles vigorously, great! - put it back on your shelf in an airtight container. Time to replace it if there was no reaction or a very weak one.
Baking Soda
Dispose of (or test potency) 6 months after opening.
Test: Add a bit of vinegar to one teaspoon of baking soda. If it bubbles vigorously, great! - put it back on your shelf in an airtight container. Time to replace it if there was no reaction or a very weak one.
While you’re at it, it may not be a bad idea to take a peek at your baking tools and consider tossing or recycling any heavily scratched or flaking non-stick coated sheet pans, tins, and molds as well as any rusted or bent cookie cutters. Go team declutter!
Your baking bestie,

Poetry & Community
Janiece Spence, an impact poet, entrepreneur, and Aubrieann’s girlfriend, brings a powerful artistic presence to Aub’s Lounge. She has a unique ability to "wake up humanity" and remind people that we all have more in common than we think. Through poetry, she encourages audiences to embrace and process emotions, creating an intimate and transformative experience.
Janiece fell in love with storytelling and the power of words at a young age.
“As a child, I was captivated by the tongue-twisters of Dr. Seuss, rehearsing the wording while learning to read. This early immersion in literature fostered my deep investment in the power of the written word,” she shares.
Inside the lounge during Janiece’s poetry open mic event, A Spoken Space: A safe space to be heard, Janiece often performs her acclaimed poetry, including:
"Image Nation" – exploring how our thoughts shape reality
"Depression" – a raw and emotional cry for help
"Rage" – confronting social injustice
"Been There 2" – reminding others they are not alone
"To My Beloved" – a tribute to her love story with Aubrieann
"Aub’s Lounge is not just about food–it’s about culture, comfort, and connection without compromise. "
Her evocative performances draw audiences in, inspiring deep reflection and connection.
When writing, Janiece follows a structured creative process.
“I gather information from news reports and educational videos. To aid my clarity, I listen to a mix of boom bap hip-hop instrumental beats and diverse musical genres,” she explains.
Aub’s Lounge is not just about food–it’s about culture, comfort, and connection without compromise. Whether you come for the gourmet banana bread, the sumptuous soups, or the heartfelt poetry, you’ll leave feeling inspired. Aubrieann and Janiece have created a unique gathering place where flavors, words, and emotions come together in a celebration of community and selfexpression.

Positive Mental Attitude
Mother-daughter duo, Jessica & Allie Parnell, share the secret to developing an enduring positive outlook that prevails
by Laura Kostad
“I was hearing the advice, ‘be mentally tough,’ but not really understanding what that meant.”
Growing up, Allie Parnell frequently heard the phrase, “be mentally tough.” Whether it was from basketball coaches, teachers, supervisors, social media influencers, or even family and friends, the message was everywhere. But the bigger question for Allie was: how? How do you actually cultivate this mental toughness?
“I was hearing the advice, ‘be mentally tough,’ but not really
understanding what that meant,” Allie recalls. “You can say ‘think positive’ and ‘don’t stress’ but sometimes you need something that helps you problem-solve it.”
At the time, Allie was living in Arizona, coaching club basketball. She was working with elite athletes who excelled physically but were often held back mentally. As she witnessed her players struggle with their mental game, her mother, Jessica
Parnell, completed her training to become a certified life coach.
“I was coaching these kids who were elite athletes, but they were struggling mentally, and it was clear that was what was holding them back,” Allie explains. She turned to her mother for advice, asking for help creating a worksheet for her players to help them develop mental toughness. A single page turned into four, ripe with reflection-based questions such as
They talk about concepts from their workbook: like confidence, gratitude, or focus, and how they can put them into action.
what is mental toughness? What is confidence? What is gratitude? What is being coachable? The idea caught fire and soon the mother-daughter duo started a podcast and social media presence that tackles these questions and more, later developing a workbook based on their discussions to help athletes hone what the Parnells have dubbed Positive Mental Attitude.
Life happened and Allie returned home to Tri-Cities where she took up a high school basketball coaching role and opened her own girls’ basketball academy that doesn’t cut players. She began implementing the strategies that she and Jessica developed with the new players she was mentoring.
The program took on a life of its own, evolving into “Mindset Power 30.” Once per week, Allie and Jessica take a section out of their workbook and spend 30 minutes before practice with Allie’s players. They talk about concepts from their workbook: like confidence, gratitude, or focus, and how they can put them into action. Since launching the program with Allie’s athletes, the Parnells have realized the applicability of their workbook beyond the court. They have had inquiries from folks of all walks interested in developing positive mental attitude both on an individual level as well as in their workplaces and organizationally.
With increasing demand, the Parnells have begun to cater workshops on PMA to a wider audience and are now finalizing a new workbook that’s more generalized for non-athletes.
"Four Cs of Mental Toughness: Confidence, Challenge, Commitment & Control."
The workbook is rooted in what they call the Four Cs of Mental Toughness: Confidence—in yourself and your abilities, Challenge—viewing challenges as opportunities not threats, Commitment—to your goals and your team, and Control—over your thoughts and actions.
In a world where life is constantly changing, the Parnells emphasize that maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude can help navigate vulnerabilities when we face situations outside of our control.
Goal setting plays a big role in PMA, but it doesn’t end with simply setting a goal—it’s being dedicated to the journey of accomplishing it. Allie explains. “With the players, we asked them to reflect on where they were at with their game. If they weren’t making strides toward that goal, we asked them to think about what was holding them back, the reasoning for it. They really started to think about it because they knew they had to check in the next week and have an answer. Over time, they learned, ‘If I don’t put the effort in, I’m not going to make progress', Jessica explained.
Allie pushes her players to move beyond the mindset of, “I can’t” and instead encourages them to adopt the attitude of persistence. “I push them to keep trying, to keep going until they succeed,” she says. Once you feel that in your body, it becomes more real. The Parnells also stress the importance of recognizing the impact of outside influences, whether from friends, family, coaches, mentors, or social media.“PMA isn’t something that you work on just on the bad days; you have to do one thing every day to keep working on it,” Allie adds.
For Allie, fortitude is the key. "It’s continuing even when it’s hard, picking yourself up even when you’ve fallen down twenty times. You can choose to focus on the fails and the falls, but it’s always about getting up and it’s always about that one time that you get up and you succeed,” says Allie. “Everyone asks, ‘what are you thankful for? What are you grateful for?’ No one ever says, ‘I’m thankful for myself, for showing up, for getting up.’ I would like to hear more people say, ‘Hey, I’m thankful I got out of bed and I kept going.’”
Having a positive mental attitude isn’t just something you choose in the moment when the going gets tough, it’s a mindset and a heart posture, a moment-to-moment practice and discipline that you constantly cultivate all throughout your life so that when the storms come, you’re prepared to meet the challenges with control, confidence and commitment to the person you want to become.

Sleepovers
by Angela Miller
THE GENERATIONAL SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE ON SLEEPOVERS
Sleepovers, a classic childhood pastime, used to be a common occurrence in households across America. However, in recent years, the concept of late-night slumber parties has shifted, with many parents expressing hesitation and uncertainty. After conducting some basic online research, it’s evident that parents and professionals are evenly split on the topic of sleepovers. A survey of 55 Tri-Cities families revealed similar trends. When asked if they would allow their child(ren) to attend a sleepover at a friend’s house, 50.9% of parents responded with “generally no,” while 49.1% said “generally yes” or “depends.” With the latter group, “depends” tended to lean toward approval, provided certain comfort and safety criteria were met.
A Generational Shift
Gen X, Millennials, as well as some Gen Z-ers fondly recall the epic nights of fun shared with friends at sleepovers. Movies, popcorn, late-night chats, and giggles are cherished memories. So, what has shifted? In today’s world, heightened awareness of child safety and abuse has put parents, particularly Millennials, on high alert. My research shows that whether parents approved or disapproved of sleepovers, their primary concerns were the same: supervision, safety, and peer influence.
"confident similar rules and boundaries were in place.
A child’s safety is always the top priority for parents.
A child’s safety is always the top priority for parents. Several expressed concerns about potential abuse at sleepovers, whether by an adult, a sibling, or peer-to-peer. For many, this possibility made sleepovers a hard “no.” Kelsey of Richland says, “I recognize there is a possibility that this will cause some resentment from my girls as they get older, but better that than irreversible trauma.”
allowed sleepovers growing up, and it was at sleepovers where I was exposed to drugs, alcohol, sneaking out to go to parties, and more.”
Additionally, with firearms being the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S., gun safety was a major concern for parents. While no one indicated this was a dealbreaker, many state they would inquire about gun ownership and storage before allowing their child to attend a sleepover.
J.S. of Pasco states, “You never know what they can be exposed to in another home. I could never forgive myself for not protecting my child from any form of harm.” Parents who approved of sleepovers specified they would only feel comfortable if they knew the host family well and were
Another concern was the potential for unsupervised time to lead to unwanted behaviors. While parents are presumably present in the home, constant supervision is unrealistic, especially when parents go to bed. Jana Hair, mother of four, shares her personal experience: “I was always
Today’s sleepovers also differ significantly due to easy access to media. Unsupervised latenight screen time increases the chances of children encountering inappropriate content or succumbing to peer pressure. Cindy McClusky, who raised her four children in the 90s and now cares for two granddaughters, reflects, “I let them go stay the night wherever [...] but over the last 30 years, my feelings have changed on the subject.”
A Favorable Outlook
On the flip side, several parents highlighted the benefits of sleepovers. Josh C of Kennewick shares, “Spending quality time with friends outside of school is an important piece to a puzzle of building strong relationships and lasting memories.” Sleepovers offer children a lowpressure environment to bond and open up to their peers in ways that
Making A Choice
are often impossible at school. Claire Malony of Kennewick shares,“I remember having a blast going to and hosting sleepovers as a kid, so allowing my kids the same experience seems appropriate.”
Hosting sleepovers can also provide unique opportunities for parents. Mary of Pasco points out,
“[Sleepovers] give parents the opportunity to get to know their children's friends and be a positive presence.” Having friends over can offer insight into your child’s social circle while also positively influencing their friends. Even brief interactions with positive role models can leave a lasting impact on children, regardless of their home situation.
Alternatives To Sleepovers
Many Tri-Cities parents and professionals in psychology and child development recommend alternatives that allow children to engage with peers while avoiding the risks associated with sleepovers.
Even brief interactions with positive role models can leave a lasting impact on children, regardless of their home situation.
Parents uncomfortable with the idea of overnight stays often suggested “late-overs,” where kids
Ultimately, whatever decision you make for your family deserves respect by friends and family alike. Parenting styles vary, and each family’s choices are rooted in unique circumstances. Jessica M., a mother of three, reminds us, “As [my kids] enter teen years and I build those relationships with [their friends’] families, I will adjust my rules on sleepovers as I feel is best.”
Even if others make different choices, mutual respect is always the kindest approach. Whether or not you allow your child to participate in sleepovers, remember, it’s your thoughtful consideration and care that make you a good parent or guardian, not the answer to this one question.
stay late at a friend’s house, doing all the typical sleepover activities such as movies and popcorn, but are picked up by 10 or 11 p.m. A Tri-Cities mother of three says, “They don’t need to sleep somewhere else when their own bed is down the road.” For younger children, daytime playdates were another popular alternative. Alyssa, a mother of two, suggests, “Let’s have a playdate during the day!”

One Woman’s Quest to Reclaim Her Passion
II’ve known Teresa for years. We’ve shared our best and hardest days, leaning on each other through some of life’s most challenging moments—especially when each of us took turns caring for our dying mothers. Teresa has faced more than her share of struggles, but this past year tested her like never before. A single fall almost took her life, threatening to steal both her dreams and her sense of purpose. Reclaiming her life is a story of resilience, and it’s one that deserves to be told.
RISING FROM THE FALL
As long as I have known Teresa, she has had a love for horses, a passion that has shaped her dreams and business. She explains, “We all have something that we find beautiful. I’ve always been mystified by horses. Somehow, it’s in my DNA.”
Several years ago, she realized that sharing her passion with others could be a full-time business. “When I rode my horses through the vineyards, it was a special experience every time. It’s a unique and intimate perspective. The rhythm and pace of riding horses among the vines is unlike anything else.” She also realized that people craved connection with horses, even if only for a brief afternoon. She had found her mission.
"We all do well if we know we have a purpose..."
Teresa’s love for horses has at times motivated her to take in rescue horses. “There are a million ways horses end up in a rescue situation, and I’ve found that horses who’ve been neglected typically thrive in a setting like ours: they have all the hay they want available 24/7. They are doted on, appreciated by hundreds of people, and they have a purpose and job. We all do well if we know we have a purpose, and domestic horses are the same.”
Last July, she was riding a rescue horse she had been working with. He had made huge progress but something startled him during this ride. She felt him tense up and reached down to pet his neck and reassure him. That’s the last thing she remembers. In the E.R., after several hours of tests, she learned the extent of her injuries: the horse had flipped over backward on her, crushing her. She had 8 broken ribs on her back left side, 2 broken ribs on the front, a lacerated liver, a lacerated spleen, a punctured left lung, a separated left shoulder, and internal bleeding. As the doctors listed her injuries, Teresa felt her heart sink. Each injury seemed to push her dream further away, and she worried that she might never return to riding.
The road to physical recovery was grueling, but the mental recovery was equally challenging. “I had a lot of negative feelings and shame about myself as a horse person. I felt like I’d failed the horse and didn’t belong around horses. I felt like I was the one to blame for the accident, and will probably always feel that way," explains Teresa.
"Overcoming that shame and guilt took work." Teresa says, “There’s always talk about facing our demons. I knew I needed to ride again; I’d had years of wonderful riding experiences. I couldn’t let that one wreck stop me from more of those experiences.”
Teresa reached out to trainers and professionals she respected: people who had dealt with similar situations. There she says, “I found the grace and support that I just couldn’t give myself. It was one thing for my friends and family to defend me against my self-criticism, but it was different when experts offered such understanding." Their encouragement infused her with strength, and she felt ready to face down her fear and get back in the saddle. “I decided that when
I rode again, I’d take my ‘main squeeze’ horse, Wrigley, my go-to girl whenever there’s a tough job to be done. "
She knew that if she overanalyzed, she might never move forward, so her return had to be spur-of-the-moment. She wouldn’t plan a specific day; she’d just do it spontaneously. “I just needed to get on and let go.”
dirt road and began to gallop. “Every thrill and joy I’ve ever felt from riding and connecting with a horse was encapsulated in that moment. I knew I wasn’t looking back.”
"I just needed to get on and let go.”
And so it happened–on a sunny spring day, almost one year after the accident. She paused her chores, saddled up Wrigley, and committed, hoping Wrigley would commit with her. “With each step, I felt like I was waking up.” Teresa found a stretch of
Today Teresa is back in the saddle full time. She isn’t completely healed, she may never fully recover physically. But she says, “I am so grateful to be back in the saddle, grateful that my riding career wasn’t ended by the accident. I am riding again because of the support of our community and our relationships. Fear and shame go hand-in-hand. Having people (and horses) support me through my shame played a big role in helping me ride again.”
STRENGTH
& Sacrifice
by Laura Kostad
A reflection on passionate living & realizing balance isn’t a destination.
Months of preparation, commitment, workouts, meal planning, and early morning routines have led to this moment. Maria Borisch, a 49-year-old professional bodybuilder from Kennewick, steps onto a brightly lit stage in a bikini and stilettos. Her hair, makeup, and physique are immaculate. She strides to center stage, her smile radiant as she strikes several poses.
Borisch competes in the wellness division, and this fleeting moment is the result of months of hard work.
“It takes four to five months to get stage-ready. During that time, the body fluctuates. The day of the show, you have to have almost no body fat. But it’s not sustainable; you can’t stay in that shape forever,” Borisch explains.“The goal is to stay lean, but as you build muscle, body proportions can change. You have to have a strong mindset of what your goals are and love yourself during the stages.”
Borisch’s journey began in 2020 after a friend encouraged her to compete. “Never in my dreams would I have thought of doing bodybuilding,” she recalls. “But when I get into something, I go full force.” She turned pro in 2021 after her first competition. Now, in addition to competing, she offers posing lessons and works as a fitness model.
On top of these roles, many in Tri-Cities know her as the owner of B4 Salon in Richland and as co-owner of TriCity Judo in Kennewick, which she runs with her husband, Robert. Their four kids, Zachary, Asia, Samuel and Gabe are also involved in judo.
“It’s exhausting, but what isn’t? Nothing is easy,” she quips. “When people ask me how I have the energy, I tell them I’m still evolving and finding balance.”
This resilience has carried her throughout life, helping her find stability in impermanence. Born into an Army family stationed in Korea, Borisch spent most of her childhood never settling for long. “I don’t know if I’ve ever really fit in,” she reflects. At 17, her mother suggested she enter a pageant, which segued into modeling and then acting. At 19, she moved back to Korea to teach English. By 21, she had married, started a family, and was pursuing beauty school in Utah while raising a baby.
A temporary move to the Tri-Cities became permanent. To support her family, Borisch worked as a flight attendant before deciding to open her own salon.“I feel like everything has a way of working out. I would love to slow down, but I don’t feel like life is letting me,” says Borisch.“I swear it’s from my mom. She was always staying up late and reinventing. There are so many things you can do and achieve. Why not?” she says.
To manage her many roles, Borisch prioritizes and shifts her focus as needed. “I’m not the best at anything; I put some things temporarily on the backburner, focus on one thing, then pick up the others,” she explains. “When you’re in survival mode, you just make it happen.” This philosophy ties back to her idea of being comfortable with life’s fluctuations. By focusing on what you can do at the moment, you can capitalize on it and keep pressing forward.
“Some days, you’re not always going to feel it, and you have to dig deep,” Borish explains. “The key, though, is to not think ‘failure’ before you start.” Borisch will turn 50 in May and aims to keep pace with her children and grandchildren.
“People don’t believe in themselves enough; they live in a bubble they create and don’t ask, ‘How can I make it better?’” Borisch says, “I pull my strength from everyone around me and my own will."
In the end, Maria Borisch’s story highlights that life’s truest rewards lie in perseverance. Her journey underscores that balance isn’t a static goal but an ongoing process of growth and adaptation. Learning to love every phase, Maria is a shining example of how passion and grit can transform even the most difficult challenges into achievements.

workers, and more ensure personalized treatment plans specific to each patient’s needs. Beyond medical treatment, Kadlec prioritizes emotional and psychological well-being through counseling, support groups, and integrative care referrals. The only not-for-profit cancer care option in the Tri-Cities, the KTCCC also holds five national accreditations which recognize high quality standards for care.
“A local cancer center brings hope and healing to our community. By providing world-class care close to home, we alleviate the stress of travel and allow patients to focus on recovery and healing, surrounded by familiar faces, which reduces the physical and emotional burden of their journey,” said Jessica Lukson, RN, BSN, Administrative Director, KTCCC.
While the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center is a primary provider of clinical care, the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation (TCCCF) plays a crucial role in supporting cancer patients and their families throughout their journey. It’s one of two foundations at Kadlec, both of which support the community’s not-for-profit hospital and cancer treatment facilities. The TCCCF focuses on advancing exceptional care and treatment-related support.
One of the foundation’s most significant contributions to KTCCC is providing resources supporting
clinical excellence such as cuttingedge technology and equipment. Cancer treatment can be incredibly expensive, even for those with insurance. With donor support, the TCCCF assists with patient-focused support items like hairpieces, comfort bags, nutritional drinks and gas cards to help defray hardships associated with cancer care.
The KTCCC also provides numerous educational resources, helping patients and families navigate the complexities of cancer treatment. Their website is a hub of information
about local cancer services, treatment options, and support resources. The generosity of donors helps the KTCCC host support groups, free screenings, and cancer education events to help patients and their families understand the emotional and physical impacts of cancer, while providing a connection to others facing similar challenges.
“There are many benefits to attending a cancer support group. A support group may help you feel better, more hopeful, and not so alone.
It may also give you a chance to talk about your feelings and work through them, help you deal with practical problems, such as problems at work or school and help you cope with side effects of treatment,” said Lorie MacIsaac, MSW, LICSWA, OSW-C social worker at KTCCC.
The KTCCC and the TCCCF understand the importance of creating a supportive and connected cancer care community. Cancer is not just a medical condition — it’s an emotional and social challenge that affects families, friends, and entire communities. Together, the two provide a collaborative environment where patients can receive not only
top-tier medical care but also the emotional and social support they need to thrive.
TCCCF facilitates communitywide events designed to raise awareness and bring people together. These include the annual Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation’s Autumn Affair and Cancer Crushing Breakfast, which
"The two provide a collaborative environment where patients can receive not only top-tier medical care but also the emotional and social support they need to thrive."
celebrate the resilience of cancer survivors while fundraising for programs and services that benefit patients. These events serve as vital touchpoints for patients, caregivers, and the broader community to connect, share stories, and offer support.
Kadlec and the TCCCF emphasize the importance of cancer prevention and early detection. By hosting preventative screenings, health fairs, and educational campaigns they empower the community with
knowledge about lifestyle choices and recommended checks. These can help reduce the risk of cancer and support early detection when treatment outcomes are more favorable.
Caring for cancer in the community requires not just exceptional medical care, but a network of emotional, logistical, and treatment-related support. The Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center and the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation
"As a community, the Tri-Cities is not only fighting cancer— it’s doing so with compassion, hope, and unity. "
are leaders in providing both, creating a strong, compassionate, and well-rounded care system for cancer patients in the local area. Their collaborative efforts demonstrate how cancer care is not just about medical treatment— it’s about nurturing the whole person. With their combined resources, local patients facing cancer are better equipped to manage their diagnosis, receive exceptional care, and find the support they need to heal. As a community, the Tri-Cities is not only fighting cancer— it’s doing so with compassion, hope, and unity.
GET UNDERGROUND FOR A DAY
The Pendleton Underground: History Beneath the Streets
Are you looking for a unique getaway filled with history, Western charm, and unforgettable flavors? A day in downtown Pendleton, Oregon, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Old West, complete with underground tunnels, legendary steak dinners, antique shopping and indulgent chocolates.
Step back in time and explore the famous Pendleton Underground, a network of tunnels built in the 1880’s by Chinese laborers. During the day, these workers toiled above ground, but after dark, they retreated below the streets for safety. At the time, if a cowboy had a little too much to drink and shot a Chinese man, he'd face only a $100 fine–not for the crime itself, but for firing his gun in town.
The underground also thrived during Prohibition. Hidden entrances led patrons to a secret Prohibition Card Room, where gamblers and drinkers escaped the watchful eyes of the law. However, as the years passed, the tunnels fell into disuse, until they became a must-see historical attraction.
A 90-minute guided tour takes you through this labyrinth of hidden passages, where

The tour also brings you up to the street level for a walk through the infamous Cozy Rooms bordello, once run by madame Stella Darby. Because her girls weren’t welcome in Pendleton churches, Stella built her own chapel inside the bordello, where Sunday services were held. She also looked out for high-profile clients, offering secret escape routes for men who needed to dodge angry wives and preserve their reputations.
By the 1950’s, local ministers and wives had had enough. Authorities rounded up the city’s prostitutes, loaded them onto buses, and drove them out of town. Stella and her girls were sent to Walla Walla, Washington, where she lived until her passing in 1977.

BUSINESS BRAND AMBASSADOR
Founded in 2016, Marla’s Cookie Co. began as a passion project inspired by Marla’s love for baking, which started in 2012. What began as a simple hobby quickly grew into a thriving small business specializing in custom sugar cookies, cookie decorating classes, and local pop-up events.
Marla’s creativity shines through her beautifully decorated cookies, and her business took a unique turn when she renovated an old horse trailer into a mobile cookie shop. Now, she travels to different locations, sharing her delicious creations with the community while also teaching others the art of cookie decorating.
Teaching cookie decorating classes is especially meaningful to Marla because it allows her to share her passion and creativity while fostering a sense of community. For her, it’s not just about teaching a skill—it’s about giving others the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful from scratch. She thrives on seeing students’ excitement when their cookies come to life, knowing she’s played a role in their creative journey.
Beyond baking, Marla is expanding her passion to support other small businesses. In Spring 2025, she will launch a podcast called One Tough Cookie, where she’ll share stories, challenges,
With each season, we celebrate a standout local business chosen by votes from our followers, peers, and fellow business owners. This season, we're thrilled to crown Marla's Cookie Co. as our Business Ambassador!
and insights from entrepreneurs navigating the ups and downs of building their own businesses. Through the podcast, Marla aims to inspire and empower fellow small business owners, helping them realize they’re not alone in their journeys.
