In Greek Mythology it is believed that there are three fates: the fate of being born, the fate of living, and the fate of death. The theme of fate for the 2024 calendar year wasn’t chosen lightly. I find myself regularly among people who believe in God, those who don’t, and those who simply want to Carpe Diem. Depending on who you’re talking to, and the given day, fate can be love at first sight or a scary little gremlin waiting to pounce and knock you senseless. In the last issue, I touched on the ideas of choice and control when it comes to claiming our unique fates. While I still strongly believe that the choices we make have a direct impact on the time we have while we’re here, I didn’t include a very common reality: what about those moments that leave you breathless and asking, "How?" or "Why?" Those moments that you know can happen but are never prepared for.
The average life expectancy in the United States is around 80 years. By this standard, I’ve made it more than halfway through my life. But, in those 40+ years, I find myself asking: how much have I actually lived? If Lachesis (the goddess of The Second Fate) decided to kick me over to Atropos (The Fate of Death) tomorrow, would I be ready to go, or would I try to buy just a little more time because I didn’t make the most of the time I already had?
Just as no one is a prophet in their own land, it’s easy to take for granted each morning that we wake up. So, knowing that life isn’t infinite, how do we and those around us choose to spend our time?
In this issue, you’ll read about how Michele York immigrated to the United States, overcame incredible challenges, and is now competing in the local Ironman. On page 25, you’ll learn how the flip of a coin set Shae and Greg Frichette on a unique path of new beginnings. Our Favorite Female Founder on page 9 describes Amanda Lorraine and how she turned her struggles into strength and uses her time to build women up. So, whether it’s taking the time for a simple walk to wellness on page 44, or sitting in a chair and donating blood to the Red Cross on page 52, I think it’s safe to say that our fate is not about the time given, but what we do with it while we have it.

It takes only one person to change the world. Amanda Lorraine, Founder and Executive Director of Grace Collective, has gone above and beyond to make sure her contribution to society makes everyone’s head turn. Her heartfelt story and extensive outreach are making an incredible impact on the community.
by Danielle Kleist
Lorraine's story began with a childhood marked by poverty, cycles of homelessness, and abuse. At 15, she found herself on the streets, battling addiction, gang violence, and destructive patterns that seemed unbreakable. Upon escaping that lifestyle in her mid-20s, she dedicated her life to helping others. When Lorraine moved to the Tri-Cities in 2014, she started serving at the women’s shelter. Lorraine found that many women in need were struggling to find employment. She began to dream about how she could provide this opportunity for the women she served.
In December 2020, Grace Collective (formerly known as Grace Kitchen) first opened its doors. The mission was to give female survivors a second chance to rebuild their lives through sustainable employment. Grace Collective is more than a nonprofit, it provides women the sanctuary to learn job skills and gain financial stability. It also gives other development opportunities to make women successful and proud members of our community. Lorraine says, “We want to build women up, so they never have to fall back into a destructive lifestyle.”
Conveniently located next to the women’s shelter, the 8,200 square foot job training facility started out producing barbeque rubs. They now make four different barbecue rubs, 20 types of artisan pastas, nine sauces, olive oils, and are currently launching a skincare line. Lorraine purchased the 1913 historic building for $10 and was offered an exclusive catering contract with Bezos Academy. Through dedicated leadership and inspired business agreements, Grace Collective has been able to graduate 10 women from the program and assist with the reunification of 24 children with their mothers.
Within 18 months, women graduate into full-time living-wage jobs. The program consists of professional development, product production, trauma classes, and financial education. Each woman begins with case management and assistance in establishing stable housing and food security. This year, the program has 14 women employed, along with a waiting list. The first step is attending at least four outreach Thursdays at Grace Collective. From there, women can apply for a 30 hours-a-week, paid position into the life-changing experience.
Jill Cullen, Lorraine’s nominator says, “She has an amazing redemption story, and she has dedicated herself to working with some of our community’s most marginalized women. She is strong and selfless. She is absolutely amazing! You have to meet her!”
There are over 1000 individuals and organizations who have directly donated to the mission of Grace Collective. Their largest fundraising
event is happening October 25th at the Three Rivers Convention Center. The annual Grace Gala is an elegant dinner and auction that “connects like-minded individuals committed to making a difference and supporting women in need.”
Aside from Grace Collective, Lorraine is a wife and mother who continues to lead outreach teams supporting women’s ministries and various groups. She is currently
completing her Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Health Science with an emphasis on Trauma and pursuing a certification through the Institute of Biblical Counseling and Discipleship. From personal to professional life, everything Lorraine does is an example of the many reasons she was selected as a Favorite Female Founder. She truly demonstrates the passion and drive to make the world a better place.
The creator of the Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program (MJSP), Elouise Sparks, aims to strengthen the young Black community by providing emotional support and encouragement to Black girls. MJSP's goal is to create a space
for growth and to build a safety net for their participants future success. The MJSP ensures a bright future for Black women, facilitating their transformation from princess to queen. These principles create a strong foundation that will benefit them now and for future generations.
“Dear Black girl, You are stronger than you believe, braver than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you know.”
Sparks encourages young Black women, whether they are part of the program or not, to proudly say to themselves, “Dear Black girl, you are stronger than you believe, braver than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you know.” She does this by offering them a piece of paper that boldly displays these words to tape against their wall and to repeat to themselves every morning. “I want them to know that they are queens, to walk in that power, to walk proud, and to be what God made them to be,” says Sparks. These affirmations give them a sense of security in any
space and the confidence to put themselves in any position.
Sparks explains that the MJSP provides a show that appreciates their strengths and talents. All of the girls receive a “swag bag” of items donated by MJSP supporters. Winning participants receive a scholarship, crown, and sash. The MJSP wants to give the girls hope and opportunity. Through winning the pageant, girls earn money over time, which makes it easier for them to save and attend any school they choose.
“In the future, we want to groom them for the Miss Black USA pageant, grant them $15,000 scholarships, and connect them with the Seattle Miss Juneteenth program,” says Sparks.
The Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program, created by Sparks, offers moral support and empowerment to girls of color by pushing them to achieve greater success and providing more opportunities for achievements. The MJSP is pouring life into them with constructive feedback, by instilling integrity, character, and self respect to help them become the best version of themselves. This experience helps participants step out of their shells and shine.
The young women who participate in Miss Juneteenth have endless potential. Sparks believes that each participant possesses special qualities that need nurturing to blossom. “Contestants attend a variety of classes that include: communication, interview skills, etiquette, financial literacy, hair & skin care, and personal hygiene,” says Sparks. Her reasoning is to give them the confidence to interact with various audiences on a professional level. The
program supplies these young ladies with presentations on historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that educate them on the importance of attending all-Black colleges. The MJSP wants them to learn about their roots, become highly educated, and be surrounded by Black royalty.

The automotive industry employed over four million Americans in 2022about 1.3% of the entire population. Technicians, advisors, and salespeople all play vital roles in providing customers the best experiences with their vehicles. Salaries have increased across the board in the industry, leading more people to pursue automotive careers.
Motor vehicles have come a long way since their inception in 1885. From the original open-top Mercedes-Benz made of wood and steel with a 35 horsepower engine that could reach a top speed of 45 mph, to the Benzes we all know today that are available in various body styles, with 400 horsepower
engines that can exceed 150 mph. Currently, automotive technicians must be as confident and comfortable with computers as they are with traditional tools to repair cars. The vehicles that are produced today take advantage of intricate technological systems with advanced computer boards and sensors. It takes considerable expertise to keep these sophisticated
machines running efficiently, reliably, and safely, and many of these technicians are trained here, in our own community.
Tri-Tech Skills Center has a wideranging automotive program that begins as early as the 8th grade. However, most students are 17 and 18 year-olds who apply the
“
Students will have a great understanding of service, repairs, and customer service.
Columbia Basin College (CBC) has a two-year program in which students are exposed to the industry and learn to care about the culture. Assistant Professor Billy Getty explains, “I want to instill confidence in the students. They will get what they put into the program.”
knowledge they’ve learned in the program toward high school credit. The Tri-Tech curriculum includes graded sections that are broken down into: lab, employability, science, math, technical English, and creating a professional portfolio. Upon completing the program, students should be able to “diagnose and repair today’s complex and technologically advanced vehicles in a job-like atmosphere.” The most dynamic part of the program is a job shadow opportunity with McCurley Dealerships. Instructor Joseph Porter says, “Students will have a great understanding of service, repairs, and customer service.”
TROY LIVELY, MCCURLEY DEALERSHIP'S VICE PRESIDENT OF PARTS & SERVICE
About 95% of the students enrolled in the automotive program are nontraditional. Many students come in during the summer to work on vehicles and continue their education outside of the traditional program. The most impressive aspects of CBC are the engine stations exclusive to the program and the state-of-the-art equipment lab. These training centers are outstanding educational resources for many students in the region.
As of 2020, women were still underrepresented at every staffing level, making up only 24% of the auto manufacturing workforce.
The leadership and facilities at TriTech and CBC reflect the dedication each institution has shown for its respective programs. It is evident that the instructors truly care about each student’s success and want to prepare them for a long-lasting career in the industry. There is also a strong relationship between McCurley Dealerships and these local automotive programs. Troy Lively, Vice President of Parts and Service for McCurley Dealerships, regularly visits the campuses. His commitment to producing local
automotive technicians is admirable. Lively says, “McCurley often hires graduates of the programs to work in their dealership service departments.” Wages for such graduates have grown steadily, outpacing inflation.
Salaries for automotive technicians have significantly increased over the years. ZipRecuiter.com lists the average annual salary for an entry level technician to be between $30,000 and $46,000. When advancing to an alignment specialist, a person could make $48,000-
$60,000. A master technician is generally paid $62,500-$90,000. There are other divisions within the automotive industry that afford substantial earnings as well. Indeed. com states, “The average Automotive Manufacturing salary ranges from approximately $67,454 per year for Welder to $129,904 per year for IT Manager.” Additionally, Indeed.com reports that automotive technician salaries average $42,000$150,000. McCurley's highest paid technician made $168,118.50 in 2023, which reflects how much the organization values their employees.
An increase in salaries is not the only change within the automotive industry. “
An increase in salaries is not the only change within the automotive industry. As a whole, the trade has become more inclusive and diverse. Twenty years ago, there were very few female managers in the production division. If women were employed in the industry, it was primarily in human resources or finance. In the past 5-10 years, that number has increased and there are more female leaders in operations roles. However, there is still a long way to go to achieve parity. The U.S. International Trade Commission says, “From the factory floor to executive suites, men have historically dominated the automotive industry. As of 2020, women were still underrepresented at every staffing level, making up only 24% of the auto manufacturing workforce.” Furthermore, many companies are now establishing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) departments
which make sure organizations create an inclusive culture that supply chains also embrace.
The automotive field is complex in its divisions and levels of leadership. Traditionally, people have viewed automotive technician positions as minimum-wage jobs for those with minimal qualifications. However, this view couldn’t be further from the truth. As the industry has grown to encompass more moving parts, so too has its personnel. In-depth educational programs and rigorous training have become the norm and are available in the Tri-Cities.
Automotive companies, such as McCurley, are investing in DEI initiatives, additional training, and technology, making job positions more competitive. These opportunities are creating the best careers for those starting in the industry.
Entry level techs start out at $20/hr. Once they move up to an apprentice tech the McCurley compensation plan increases to $21-23 per hour with guaranteed hours and bonus opportunities.

Let’s do something that gives us goosebumps. “
by Angela Miller FLIP
After months of disagreement over whose hometown would be best to move to, Shae and Greg Frichette left it to fate and flipped a coin. Fourteen years later, they own a thriving winery, among the greats, on Red Mountain in Benton City.
While living in sunny southern California, Greg and Shae Frichette met and married while maintaining their successful careers in IT and Corporate Training. As the idea of children started to bloom, so did conversations of their own childhood– both recalling fond memories of being near their grandparents while growing up. They knew it was time to move home. The question was, however, whose home?
After countless discussions and indecisions, Greg suggested
a coin flip. Heads was Washington, tails was South Carolina. To Shae’s shock, it was heads when the coin went still.
While perusing the internet for new job perspectives, Shae had a realization that she could completely start over if she wanted to. She didn’t have to go into the same corporate training type position that she’d always had. Because they were starting out in a new place, why not start something completely new?! “Let’s do something that
gives us goosebumps,” Shae recalls saying to her husband. Upon further research, coupled with Greg’s experience working with his grandfather growing up, something in agriculture seemed the most appropriate choice. The couple found that wine grapes were one of the most popular Washington grown crops, thus sparking the idea of a winery.
Having old friendship connections with the local Katie and Marc Nelson of Gordon Estate, Greg and Shae received helpful recommendations in terms of growing their own grapes. Upon returning to Tri-Cities, another friend recommended that they check out Red Mountain, specifically Fidelitas. Shae recalls the wine being fantastic and the landscape breathtaking. “This is where we needed to be,” she shares. The Frichette’s hit the ground running in 2011 with the guidance and mentoring of Charlie Hoppes of Fidelitas, graciously offering his equipment and advice to Greg while he completed WSU’s V & E Certificate Program.
Frichette opened their doors for the first time in 2013 with four wines: a merlot, a cabernet sauvignon, a red blend, and a white wine. The shop on their property was converted into their tasting room with a vision of informal yet professional, welcoming of all people. The vision of starting something new and giving their son, Jayden, an opportunity to grow up near his grandparents, was in full swing.
“Sashay, girl, Sashay!”
After a particularly tough winter, Shae, in need of a refresh, sought out a women’s retreat and stumbled upon an event in Miami called Celebration of Black Women and Wine (now called Women In Wine Celebration Dinner), put on by Urban Connoisseurs– a group whose goal is to create and grow a community of American winemakers of African descent. Without a moment's hesitation, Shae booked her ticket. Attending this event filled Shae with butterflies; she couldn't believe there were so many women who looked like her in the wine industry. Returning home refreshed and inspired, Shae wanted to empower women and create an approachable wine that
represented herself. Chance Watt, a local artist, beautifully executed Shae’s vision of the label, while also creating two huge canvas pieces of the stunning women from the bottle, adding a touch of grace and elegance to the tasting room. The Sashay wine series made its debut with a 2018 Rosé, followed by a 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, then later added Syrah exclusively to the Sashay brand. While the name Sashay might sound like a play on Shae’s own name, she actually chose it as a nod to her southern roots. She fondly remembers her mother and grandmother using this word to mean playful or fun. Perhaps best described by the Sashay Wines FaceBook page, “a wine that reflects the tastes and style of the women she grew up with, the ones who'd sashay into a room, head high, smelling of sweet perfume and were heard.”
Shae’s own words adorn the back of the Sashay wine bottles, written from the heart and meant to inspire:
“You are strong. You are courageous. You are fierce. You have the ability to create positive change in this world.
So lift your chin, push your shoulders back and sashay, girl, sashay.”
In eleven years, Frichette Winery has gone from four wine offerings to about 14-17 each year, 650 cases to 3,500, and have more than quadrupled the seating in their tasting room. They offer a cheese plate for two that includes their legendary cheese ball, a secret recipe they refuse to reveal but guaranteed will leave you yearning to crack the code on its ingredients. Your experience at Frichette will be casual, friendly, and relaxing whether you’re sipping on their
wines inside the cozy tasting room or out on the patio overlooking the plush green grass, rows of wine grapes, and ambiance of Red Mountain. “We are in awe of where we live,” Shae says, referencing the community and growth of Red Mountain. Greg and Shae Frichette have not only cultivated a fantastic dream of their own, but have graced the Tri-Cities area with a delicious and picturesque winery rooted in family values, love and empowerment.

In1990, hot air balloon pilot Ted Wirch traveled to Prosser to take his in-laws up into the skies surrounding their community. Little did he know, his errand would mark the start of an event now in its 35th year.
Rising from the ground, Ted saw Prosser from a bird’s-eye vantage: he saw the small community tucked in amongst the sagebrush, verdant farms, vineyards and hops fields, flanked by the curves of the Yakima River and the Horse Heaven Hills.
It was something, he realized, that should be shared with not only other ballooners but also the greater community. Have you ever come around a bend in the road and been treated to the pleasant surprise of a hot air balloon’s vibrant quilt hanging almost soundlessly in the air?
It is a moment of spellbound wonder to see the colorful globes suspended in space. Imagine, though, having the opportunity to see them up close, perhaps assist with their takeoff and recovery, and watch the magic of them lifting from the ground.
Once a year in Prosser, visitors have the chance to do just that.
Twenty hot air balloons will take to the sky September 27-29 during the Great Prosser Balloon Rally, a local nonprofit that puts on the annual, completely free, family-friendly event.
It’s an event for those who don’t mind getting up early. Spectators are encouraged to arrive at the Prosser Airport before sun-up, around 6:15 a.m., to take in launch preparations.
At sunrise, the balloons take to the cool, still skies of early fall. Depending on conditions, they could be up in the air for ten minutes or upwards of two hours. Though none of the ballooners participating in the event sell rides, it’s a sight to see and ripe with photo opportunities, particularly when the ballooners “splash and dash” their baskets on the Yakima River in a breathtaking display.
For those who don’t want the early wake-up, there’s the iconic Night Glow event at Art Fiker Stadium on September 24. Though the balloons don’t leave the ground, they still dazzle in the glow of their stunning immensity. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
“It’s a big event for the city,” said Great Prosser Balloon Rally Chairman Morgan Everett. “It brings in a ton of people from all over, people who’ve never heard of Prosser or been here before.”
The Prosser Chamber of Commerce and others in the community have embraced the balloon rally and started complementary activities to give
visitors more to see and do during the day between balloon events, such as sponsored breakfasts, a downtown Harvest Festival, and the Caren Mercer-Andreason Street Painting Festival.
Everett said that for those in the area looking to get involved, the nonprofit needs both committee members to help plan the event and weekend warriors to sell
t-shirts, direct parking, and more. Information can be found at prosserballoonrally.org
“There’s not much today that’s free. We do encourage donations, but we want this for the community, we want to keep it going for the community and we want to watch it grow.”

Early in pregnancy, embryos can be seen on ultrasound squirming and fluttering; the beginnings of healthy brains and nervous systems which continue to develop through adulthood. This is important not just for muscle movement but for mental processing. Connecting us to our environment, our brain receives stimuli and then has to act on it; both physically and mentally. Our bodies are built to do rather than stew. Not doing is akin to leaving a car
If children have recess at school, I need a little recess at work. “
in a barn for years on end. Gaskets dry and break, metal corrodes, and without much time required, breaks down. Fortunately, there is a way to restore corroded metal and leaky gaskets: movement.
Despite exercising for 20+ years, I still fall into the trap of a stationary life. Commutes and long hours in the clinic don’t lend themselves to moving or any motivation to do so, and my mental health spiraled quickly as anxiety and depression mounted. My legs needed to get off the chair and
out of the car. My brain was aching for a break from spreadsheets and prescriptions. I heard one of my kids talk about recess, and I had the brilliant realization that if children have recess at school, I need a little recess at work.
Physical health is the natural byproduct of doing what the body was meant to do. Our bones are stronger for it, which is especially important as we age and are more prone to loss of bone density. Our nerves and muscles calibrate, and our balance increases, decreasing our risk of falls; and when we do fall, the likelihood of severe injury goes down.
So I set out to add more movement to my day. Now, running may as well be a four-letter word to me, so I knew starting to run wasn’t the answer. Recruiting coworkers, I was able to get a brief 15-minute walk and talk instead of a brief 15-minute break on my phone. Walking outside was a great start. Now, we try to go out as often as we can for a quick walk, getting to vent about whatever and feeling refreshed when we get back. During cold months or horrible weather, squats at my desk or pushups on the floor fill the need. I’ve had my pharmacy students do pushups with me (all voluntary, of course, and more
fun in groups) to break up a session of pharmacy work. Afternoon doldrums began disappearing and only pop up again when I’ve deemed movement not as important as the almighty spreadsheet. With better weather, a 3 mile Sunday morning walk or hike has brought me beautiful views of Kennewick and Pasco and wonderful conversations with people over the phone to pass the time. Rather than continuing to spiral, my gray matter is feeling calm again, problem solving and enjoying moments rather than stressing about the mundane.
Feeling down or want to improve your health? Take a walk.

We often hear the old saying: behind every face is a story. We recognize that the lives of those around us have consisted of a unique series of twists and turns that led them to this moment; but what we often take for granted are the choices people made along the way when confronted with what waited around each of those corners, ultimately shaping the course of what followed.
Some call that fate.
Michele York will be competing in September in Tri-Cities’ first half Ironman 70.3-mile triathlon.
Until she decided to train for Ironman, she never saw herself becoming a runner, let alone an endurance athlete. Since she started training last April, she’s lost over 75 pounds, won a local road race and discovered something new about herself.
“It’s become my favorite thing,” she said. “I told my husband, ‘I can do hard things. I’ve done hard things. I’m just going to go for it and see how it goes.’ I always see myself bulldoze through whatever is in my way. If there is an obstacle, there’s always a way to get around it or work through it. I’ve always tried to do things that I enjoy but also excel at. Maybe that’s the immigrant in me.”
Michele was born Michaela Poradovsky in communist Czechoslovakia.
After the preventable death of her infant sister at the hands of indifferent hospital staff, her parents chose to abandon their home and teaching careers, leaving behind nearly everything they owned to seek a better life abroad.
Michele was only two years old, but she still remembers what the forest looked like along the border of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia where the family concealed themselves for days, waiting for the right moment to defect.
After their escape, the family waited for two years, first in a refugee camp, then in a hostel in Geistthal, Austria, for their chance to find a permanent home and begin a new life. That opportunity came in Boston.
The Poradovskys lived in the projects where they faced no shortage of uphill challenges. Michele fortuitously received a need-based scholarship to attend a private Catholic school down the street. Her parents studied English. Her dad worked odd jobs and studied to become an electrical engineer while her mother worked nights in
a nursing home, by day caring for a new baby with severe autism.
Eventually, the family saved up enough money to move to the suburbs where Michele learned to play violin and was invited to join the prestigious Greater Boston Youth Symphony. In her spare time, she took care of her neurodivergent sister, including her as much as possible in normal, everyday activities and making the best of a hardscrabble American childhood as a new U.S. citizen.
She went on to pursue a degree in sociology at University of Maine— PortlandGorham, where she met her husband, Brian York, who was
...the family concealed themselves for days, waiting for the right moment to defect.
studying medicine. After graduating, she began to build her career, first at Cole Haan where she had student interned and later in marketing and promotions for the local CBS news station.
Things took an unexpected turn when their firstborn son was diagnosed with autism around his first birthday.
Michele said it was devastating. “It was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t get out of this cycle.’” She recalled that as all of the specialists sat at their home discussing her son, “He was sitting in the sandbox picking up sand and dropping it and I was in tears wondering what’s it going to mean for him? How and when are we going to know if he’s going to be okay? We were left with so much uncertainty. I felt like I grew up with so much uncertainty.”
Michele focused all of her energy into advocating for her son and making sure he received all of the support and therapy he would need to be successful.
Then, in 2008, when Michele was pregnant with their second child, Brian completed his studies in infectious disease and accepted a position at Kadlec in Richland. Unfortunately, there were not the same programs or level of help for autistic children available, so Michele found herself in the position of having to give up her career aspirations, switch to homeschooling her son and care for a new baby in a new community.
She chose to homeschool both children; it was a challenging path, but both boys have ultimately gone on to be successful in their pursuits and Michele says she and Brian couldn’t be prouder of them.
Training for the Ironman has helped Michele improve her own mental health, and not just through her accomplishments to date. She said triathlon culture is a very positive and encouraging space that recognizes everyone had to start somewhere.
Before the big event though, Michele and her family will be traveling to Austria this summer to visit the place she lived as a refugee before coming to the U.S. Looking back over the
challenges she’s faced throughout her life, she says she chooses not to dwell on misfortune or identify with a victim mentality.
“Terrible things happen to so many people, you ultimately have to get through it in some way. I don’t take things so personally anymore; maybe
“ I’m just focusing on what’s in front of me right now.
I’ve just come full circle. We’re all on our own journey; if you’re in a negative situation, just get out of it.”
Michele says she learned recently that new research is suggesting we don’t reach our goals by pumping ourselves up on the inspiring stories of others or outside stimuli so much as by finding joy in each step along the road to accomplishing our goals.
People have asked her if she will eventually do the full 140.6-mile Ironman. “And my answer is, ‘I don’t know, I haven’t even done this one yet.” She tells them what she’s learned to tell herself when confronted with questions about an uncertain future: “I’m just focusing on what’s in front of me right now.’”

The American Red Cross is best known for blood drives and disaster relief; however, their biggest impact might be felt in your own home. “When people say, ‘we don’t have disasters in our community,’ I think, a home fire is a disaster that can impact any one of us,” says Michele Roth, Executive Director of the American Red Cross serving Central and Southeastern Washington.
Oper year during wildfire season. In addition to wildfires, the local team responded to 155 home fires and served 609 people. Individuals and families who were displaced by a home fire received $140,930 in financial assistance. Surprisingly, the greatest number of home fires happens during the winter.
While also assisting displaced families, our local chapter works closely with local fire departments and volunteers on home fire preparedness. While the idea of a deadly fire may seem unlikely, few people have a fire evacuation plan for their own house. The Red Cross works with fire departments to identify high-risk areas. Then, with local partners, volunteers knock on doors and provide free smoke alarms
and fire education. They also help to establish evacuation plans and educate individuals on when to get out and how to practice home fire safety.
Much of this Red Cross support is done without any fanfare. After a fire, first responders will go out and determine the degree of immediate need. Next, the fire department will ask victims if they would like the

Red Cross to be notified. Usually, within a few hours of an incident, the Red Cross will contact the affected individual or family and begin providing support. They have several different teams which specialize in recovery, mental health, nursing, and follow-up. The Red Cross helps people cope with the psychological trauma of losing their homes, while quickly recovering missing prescription medications and medical equipment. Since the nature of their support is so private, the
community often doesn’t know about all of the hard work going on behind the scenes.
The American Red Cross also hosts our community’s Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Last year, more than 1,400 people gathered on Thanksgiving Day to raise over $90,000 in funding for the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. The 21st Annual “Run for the Red” Turkey Trot will be Thursday, November 28, 2024, at Columbia Park in
Kennewick, Washington. Roth says, “My family has been participating in the Turkey Trot since we moved here in 2003. Running a 5K in the morning helps you feel better about what you eat later.” Registration for the trot is now open and family members of all ages can volunteer to help make the event a success.
The Red Cross has lots of other opportunities available for willing volunteers. “90% of our workforce is volunteers. It’s great to see that these
are your own community members coming out and wanting to help,” says Roth. Volunteers can educate others about home fires through the door-to-door campaign or assist with blood drives and other special events. There are also virtual positions and other ongoing programs to assist. It’s easy to connect with a chapter’s volunteer recruiter and learn about the many positions open to all ages. Roth says, “Most people have a connection to the Red Cross. They have been ‘touched by cancer,’ meaning they know someone who has at least been treated. The majority of blood donated goes toward accident victims, surgeries, and cancer treatments.” Volunteers are often very passionate about those lines of services. A person need only be 16 years old to help at blood drives.
“Only 3% of people eligible to give blood do so. The Red Cross supplies 40% of the nation’s blood,” says Roth. In our community, Pasco is the toughest area to collect blood. Roth and McCurley Dealerships saw this need and are working to schedule a blood drive in one of the McCurley showrooms in early 2025. Roth encourages everyone to go online and check their eligibility to donate.
The FDA regulations have recently changed, and some things no longer apply, making donating an option for more individuals wanting to help. High schoolers are one of the Red Cross’ largest donor populations. “If someone who starts donating at a young age becomes a life-long donor, they may eventually reach 20 or more gallons. We have donors who are well into their 80’s,” Roth explains.
The American Red Cross values its local chapters while quietly providing essential support and resources during times of need. From responding to wildfires and home fires to organizing blood drives, community events, and training services such as CPR, AED and First Aid, the Red Cross remains steadfast in its mission to offer aid, education and hope to those affected. “Whether we raise the money locally or not, the Red Cross is going to show up and be there when our community needs us the most,” says Roth. The dedication of volunteers and the generous contributions of local partners highlight the strong spirit of unity and compassion in our region. By supporting and participating in Red Cross initiatives and events, we can all contribute to a safer and more connected community.
