Jurong Hospital Patient Support
Joining ward-based programmes like Patient Buddies at Jurong Hospital involves about two months' worth of weekly volunteering at the hospital lobby beforehand. You will normally join the Greeters and Guiders programme first and once your regular attendance is confirmed you will be transferred to the Patient Buddies programme which involves a lot of hands-on interaction with patients, mostly handing out meals during lunchtime, supervising patients with high fall risk, and feeding patients. If you volunteer, you will have a direct impact on the Singapore community. If you are interested in medicine at university and need experience, this is a good opportunity.
Kidney Kindness Project
About six new patients are diagnosed with kidney problems every day in Singapore, and many are forced to spend many hours hooked up to a dialysis machine, which can be lonely and overwhelming. Having someone to talk to or just keep them company makes a big impact, so come volunteer at the Kidney Kindness project! The role is simple. It involves having conversations with dialysis patients at one of the National Kidney Foundation's dialysis centres. It is a meaningful way to help others and learn more about what dialysis patients go through. Also for all our future medics, this is a great way to develop proper bedside manner and learn how to communicate with patients. So if you want to brighten people's days and make a real impact, this is a great opportunity. The session timings vary, so you will need to do this in your own time. It can be followed as a service activity instead of the Monday CCA service session.
