ASSISTANT COACHES/SUPPORT STAFF

2018 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Jerry Hulla Assistant Coach 3rd Season University of Maryland Baltimore Country, ‘91 Jerry Hulla enters his third season as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at TAMIU, after joining the program in 2016. He brings over twenty-five years of coaching experience to the Dustdevils’ coaching staff, including collegiate coaching at the Division I, Division II & Junior College levels, plus international experience. Before coming to TAMIU, Hulla spent three seasons at Bemidji State University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the top Division II volleyball conference in the country. There he was involved in multiple facets of the program, including recruiting, developing scouting reports and breaking down video, coordinating with the Strength & Conditioning Staff on year-round programs and training the setters and liberos. During his tenure one of his setters finished fifth all-time in career assists and one of his liberos finished fourth all-time in career digs. In addition, Hulla coached the all-time career kills and attempts leader at BSU, who also finished eighth all-time in career games played. He also coached a player who finished tenth alltime in career block assists, plus two players who reached 1,000 kills in their careers; one of which was only the third player in program history to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs during their career. International experience is also something Hulla brings to Laredo. In the summer of 2013 he was invited to serve as the Head Coach for a Bring It Promotions team that participated in the Ninth Annual European Global Challenge held in Croatia. His team, comprised of collegiate volleyball players from all divisions, finished fifth overall while competing against Junior National Teams from Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro and the Czech Republic. Additionally, Hulla served as a statistician for the 2001 United States Men’s National and World University Games teams in Colorado Springs. There he worked with many players who ended up being selected to the teams that won Gold in 2008 in China and Bronze this past summer in Brazil. Hulla’s international experience doesn’t end there, as he also served as the Assistant Coach for the United States Disabled Standing National Team from 19982001. During that time the team finished fourth at the 1998 World Championships in Poland, won the Silver Medal at the 1999 Pan-American Championships in Canada and finished fourth at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Australia. He trained four All-Tournament Team selections, including a three-time Best Blocker in the World, two-time Best Spiker in the World and one-time Best Receiver in the World. He has also been involved with USA Volleyball’s High Performance Program on-and-off for over fifteen years, serving as both a talent evaluator and assisting in the selection of members of multiple Youth and Junior National Teams. Hulla is CAP Level IV certified by USA Volleyball.

Hulla collegiate experience is also extensive. At the NCAA Division I level, he served as the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach at Towson University in Maryland from 2007-2009 and University of Louisiana-Monroe from 2004-05. At Towson, he was responsible for all aspects of recruiting and talent evaluation, in addition to on-court coaching, video duties and scouting reports. His 2009 recruiting class received Honorable Mention status from Prep Volleyball, while he was responsible for signing an Under Armour Second Team All-American and Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year to the 2010 class. He also managed all aspects of the Tiger Volleyball Camps and served as the liaison to both the Compliance and Academic Advising departments. While at Towson, he trained two multi-year All-Conference selections and one All-Rookie team member. At Louisiana-Monroe, he was the primary recruiter, was responsible for video analysis and opponent scouting, coordinated the Strength & Conditioning program, plus training setters and managed the team’s defense. He also continued his involvement with Athletic Compliance by handling all paperwork necessary to comply with NCAA, conference and university rules. At the NCAA Division II level, Hulla’s experience isn’t limited to just his time at Bemidji State. He was the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach at the University of Central Arkansas from 2003-04. There he served as the primary recruiter; was responsible for the team’s defense and trained their defensive specialists. He also created and managed both the spring and summer Strength & Conditioning programs; handled opponent scouting and video analysis, as well as coordinated a nutrition program with UCA’s Family & Consumer Sciences Dept. While at UCA he trained two All-Conference selections and two Conference Players of the Week (one offensive and one defensive) while helping the team to a second place finish in the Western Division in 2003 and a Quarterfinal appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Hulla, who has numerous published works to his credit in periodicals such as Performance Conditioning Volleyball, Coaching Volleyball and Volleyball USA, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in Information Systems Management in 1991.
