WATER WARRIORS:

VOLUNTEERS IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY

In the midst of life’s challenges, there are moments when the weight of the world feels almost unbearable. As part of the Tagum Water District, which serves Tagum City and its neighboring areas, we understand challenges all too well. However, the February floods brought unprecedented obstacles to our community in the whole Davao del Norte. Amidst the chaos, a beacon of hope emerged through the dedication of our Water Guardians. Despite facing financial constraints, these unsung heroes volunteered their time and compassion to restore water services to the affected communities. The MISD Team and the Water Rationing Team joined forces, delivering clean and potable water to each household, crossing flooded roads, and continuing their mission late into the night. Their selflessness ensured that thousands of residents received the water they desperately needed, easing their suffering and showing love and care in every possible way. After all, we are one.

At Tagum Water District, we deeply value our communities, and through the efforts of our Water Guardians, we gave back in a time of need. We believe that true public service doesn’t require a uniform or a paycheck - it requires compassion and the determination to serve, no matter the circumstances. When we come together, hand in hand, we draw strength from collective action. United toward a common goal, it becomes easier to find light in the darkest times. This shared effort gives birth to hope, reminding us that the dream of a better tomorrow is not just a distant fantasy but a reality we can create when we unite. Despite the adversity of our experiences and struggles, we all come from the same root - a shared humanity.

Reflecting on these selfless actions, I am reminded that even in the face of hardship, there are everyday heroes among us, working tirelessly to make a difference. Together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness, resilience and hope.

From the Manager’s Desk THE OVERFLOWING SPIRIT OF EMPATHY

For 42 years, our dedication to service has been unwavering, but our resilience and empathy have truly shone brightest during times of crisis and calamity. This enduring commitment to not only serving but genuinely engaging with our community has been our cornerstone, evident in our response to emergencies and disasters. It is during these pivotal moments that our true dedication to corporate social responsibility is most vividly illustrated.

The flood that inundated the Davao region in February, particularly impacting our neighboring towns, stands as a poignant example of this commitment. The sheer scale of the disaster demanded more than just a routine response; it required a profound level of empathy and unwavering support. Embodying the spirit of public service, our workforce went above and beyond by extending their service hours to ensure affected communities received essential supplies. Through our fleet of water tankers and the distribution of bottled water, we prioritized the provision of clean and potable water—an indispensable resource in the midst of such a dire situation.

This overflow of water, while a practical response to a critical need, symbolized something deeper: our collective compassion. In times of profound distress, a simple act of kindness can become a beacon of comfort. The outpouring of support from our team not only addressed immediate needs but also served as a source of solace for those grappling with loss and uncertainty.

Yet empathy is not just about immediate action; it is about fostering a culture of care and resilience. Our response to the flood was more than an operational success; it was a reflection of our fundamental values, highlighting our

understanding that true public service extends beyond logistics—it is about connecting with people on a human level and providing reassurance during their difficult times.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of our role within the community, let us remember that every act of service, no matter how small, contributes to a larger tapestry of hope and support. Our commitment to empathy and resilience is not just a reaction to crises but a continuous endeavor to uplift and strengthen our community.

Let us all take this moment as a reminder to pour out not only our resources but also our hearts. In every challenge we face, may our actions reflect the enduring spirit of empathy that defines us.

TOGETHER WE RISE: CLEAN WATER, STRONGER COMMUNITY

The recent floods have wreaked havoc on our city, causing widespread destruction and displacing countless families. Despite these hardships, the indomitable spirit of our community shines brightly. Amid the devastation, a beacon of hope emerges – Tagum Water District.

We understand the crucial role that clean water plays in post-disaster recovery. It is fundamental to health, sanitation, and the very hope that drives the rebuilding process. Our commitment to this community, however, goes beyond immediate needs. Your trust and support have been the foundation of our growth, enabling us to deliver clean water to countless homes.

In your time of need, we are dedicated to giving back. During the recent flood incident that affected different areas in Davao del Norte, Tagum Water District donated bottled water to the City Government of Tagum, Villa Consuelo, Brgy. Apokon, Tagum City, the Municipality of Braulio E. Dujali, and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Tagum City. These bottles are a tangible symbol of our gratitude for your unwavering support over the years. Additionally, we mobilized our water tankers to deliver potable water to various affected areas.

While bottled water offers immediate relief, we also recognize the importance of long-term solutions. We are committed to working with local authorities and community leaders to establish access points for clean water once the floodwaters recede, ensuring a sustainable source of clean water for residents to rebuild their lives with confidence.

As part of our information drive, we will provide educational materials on safe water practices, empowering you to protect yourselves and your families from waterborne diseases, which is crucial for maintaining good health during the recovery process.

The clean water we provide is more than a necessity; it is a testament to the strength we find in unity. It represents a community coming together and a company giving back to the wellspring of its success. At Tagum Water District, we see this initiative not just as a response to the crisis, but as a commitment to rebuilding a stronger Tagum City, one drop at a time and hand in hand.

WOMEN SHINE: A DAY OF EMPOWERMENT & INSPIRATION

Garbed in a vibrant purple hue, the empowered women of Tagum Water District enthusiastically celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, at Arman’s in Tagum City. The event, themed “Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan Patutunayan!” (A Just Society in the New Philippines: Women’s Abilities Will Be Proven!), commenced with opening remarks from Engr. Pilar M. Mula, MSE, RMP, the acting general manager.

Alma A. Ligutom, RM, BSM, a resource speaker from the Provincial Health Office, raised awareness about breast and cervical cancer during her discussion. Following her presentation, a breast examination was conducted to check for early signs of breast cancer.

Furthermore, Chairperson Arlene J. Adlawan, Vice Chairperson Norma R. Pereyras, and Dir. Virginia R. Coloma-Rafael shared their wisdom and experiences to inspire all participants.

To showcase the talents, innate beauty, and intellectual prowess of the TWD ladies, five candidates participated in an impromptu pageant. After careful deliberation, the esteemed judges crowned Ms. Sheen Corazo as the victor.

The event successfully achieved its aim of boosting women’s empowerment and nurturing confidence among female employees.

PROUDLY MARCHING: TAGUM WD ROCKS ARAW NG TAGUM!

Mariejoy B. Castillote

Banners waving, music playing, and smiles beaming – the 26th Araw ng Tagum kicked off with a bang!

The Civic Parade, a vibrant display of the city’s spirit and collaborative efforts, saw the Tagum Water District (TWD) proudly participating alongside other institutions and residents. Led by Chairperson Arlene J. Adlawan, CE, M.Eng’g, Dir. Henrietto Q. Castrence, and Acting General Manager Pilar M. Mula, CE, MSE, RMP, a team of fifty TWD personnel joined the lively procession, demonstrating their commitment to a more cohesive and peaceful society.

It provides an opportunity for TWD to engage with the community in a positive and festive setting, fostering a shared sense of pride and belonging. Involvement

in the parade carries on the tradition of recognizing Tagum City’s achievements, from historical milestones to ongoing development. By participating in this yearly festival, TWD not only contributes to the event’s success but also assists in preserving Tagum City’s cultural diversity and communal spirit.

TWD’s participation in the Araw Tagum Civic Parade is an essential demonstration of dedication to the community. It emphasizes the commitment to upholding and honoring the city’s accomplishments and actively engaging in cultural customs, thus strengthening the relationship between the TWD and the community it serves.

RISK OF WATER METER THEFT: HOW SECURE ARE WE?

Water meters are constantly vulnerable to theft, a target for those with malicious intentions. This year alone, Tagum Water District (TWD) has recorded 37 reported incidents of stolen water meters between January and May.

To help concessionaires prevent these occurrences, TWD actively promotes the use of water meter encasements. Under this program, concessionaires provide the necessary materials, while TWD fabricates and installs the enclosures free of charge. To request an encasement, concessionaires must deliver two lengths of 10mm deformed reinforcing bar (DRB) to the TWD compound. Fabrication and installation will be scheduled accordingly. During installation, concessionaires must also provide 5 kgs of cement and 1 sack of washed sand. While optional, placing a padlock on the encasement is highly recommended.

TWD also extends public advisories through Facebook, encouraging vigilance towards individual water meters and prompt reporting of any suspicious activity involving water service connections.

Prevention is key. Without proper safeguards, anyone can be susceptible to theft. Let’s all work together to heighten our awareness and strengthen our safety measures to prevent water meter theft. A secure water meter means a happy concessionaire.

TAGUM WD JOINS BFP FOR NATIONAL FIRE SAFETY MONTH

Engr. Gene Rey L. Rubilla

“Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi ka Nag-iisa,” declared the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 11 Tagum City Fire Station as they officially concluded the kick-off ceremony for this year’s Fire Prevention Month at Tagum City, Central Fire Station, National Highway, Brgy. Canocotan, Tagum City on March 1, 2024. The theme, which translates to “In preventing fire, you are not alone,” underscored the importance of community involvement in fire prevention efforts, and Tagum Water District (TWD) was there to demonstrate their commitment to this crucial cause.

The activity started with a parade that featured participants from various sectors, including local government officials, firefighters, and community organizations. Colorful banners, fire trucks, and water tankers were part of the motorcade, creating a festive atmosphere while delivering an important message about fire prevention.

Following the parade, the formal kick-off was held. DILG Tagum City Director Jeanette Juntilla-Palmera, CADAC Action Officer Florentino Carlo S. Domingo, Executive Assistant II, Provincial Fire Marshal FSUPT Rodolfo B. Alocelja, FCINSP Janeth B. Mapesos-Lequigan, City Fire Marshal, JCINSP Carlos G. Lanzuela Jr. (Jail Warden), and JINSP Sally M. Lobo (Jail Warden) were among the top local and BFP officials who were present and gave their meaningful messages during the ceremony.

With TWD’s commitment and dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community in times of crisis, Robert C. Tesoro, MM, the TWD Fire Brigade team leader, along with members Ricky A. Jacobo, Pol Rene B. Masillones, Leonard R. Maturan, Medel M. Monceda, Jerson P. Palmera, Gene Rey L. Rubilla, Carlos C. Tesoro, Jr., and Kent Adriane C. Tomas, represented the institution in the “Covenant Signing, Manifesto of Support,” which shows the district’s cooperation with the BFP in securing properties and their occupants from destructive fire through self-imposed fire safety awareness activities and initiatives.

The collaborative efforts between both the public and private sectors and the community contributed to a heightened sense of vigilance and preparedness against fire-related incidents.

WATER EXCELLENCE: TAGUM WD HOSTS DUAL BENCHMARKING EVENTS

Hannah Joy G. Crisostomo

Think of it as the “Water Olympics,” but instead of medals, there’s knowledge to be shared. Tagum Water District (TWD) recently hosted benchmarking visits from the Metro Cotabato Water District (MCWD) and the Digos Water District (DWD), demonstrating that collaboration is key to a brighter future for water services.

These events, facilitated by the Management Information Services Division (MISD), were hosted by Mr. Jaydee M. Lequin, MMPA (Internal Control Assistant A), with a welcome address by Ms. Jenelyn C. Lebria, MBA (MISD-Acting Division Manager), and a presentation of TWD Profile by Mr. Atelano A. Leduna III (Corporate Planning Analyst A).

On February 26, 2024, TWD welcomed MCWD representatives, including Engr. Venancio E. Villarma, Jr. (Assistant General Manager), Mr. Joselito D. Nuñez, Jr. (OIC-Administrative Department Manager), Ms. Jocelyn A. Plazos (OIC-Commercial Services Department Manager), Mr. Randy Moses P. Limba (OIC-Maintenance Division Manager), Mr. Roland Jay P. Costes (Private Secretary C), and Mr. German Q. Labrador (driver). TWD’s Property and Warehousing Acting Division Manager Ms. Mariz Vanessa C. Alburo and Non-Revenue Water Acting Division Manager Engr. Keith G. Nicart addressed queries about the Water Meter Management/Program.

The DWD delegation, comprising Engr. John Rhodel B. Ybañez (WRFOForeman) and Mr. Jovito V. Tolaresa (OIC-AGSD), visited on April 25, 2024, focusing on TWD’s procurement processes for electromechanical equipment. TWD’s Procurement and Warehousing Acting Division Manager Ms. Mariz Vanessa C. Alburo, Water Production Division representative, Mr. Belsor S. Galdo (Senior Water Resource Facilities Operator A), Production Department’s representative, Engr. Jerameel O. Bonono, and Bids and Awards Committee’s Chairperson Dr. Marie Jane A. Clavero, were present to address the guests’ questions and queries.

These events highlight TWD’s commitment to sharing best practices and fostering collaboration within the water industry.

TAGUM WD’S UMBRELLA GIVEAWAY: A SPLASH OF COLOR!

In an unprecedented move, Tagum Water District (TWD) has set the city abuzz by giving away 42,000 vibrant umbrellas to celebrate its 42nd anniversary. This remarkable initiative, which began on April 1, 2024, allows concessioners to receive these colorful umbrellas by presenting their bill payment receipts.

This grand gesture is more than a celebration of TWD’s enduring service; it is a profound expression of gratitude to the community for their steadfast support. The umbrellas, practical gifts designed to shield concessioners from rain and intense sunlight, reflect TWD’s unwavering commitment to the well-being and comfort of its concessionaires.

Chairperson Arlene J. Adlawan, Vice Chairperson Norma R. Pereyras, and Directors Vincent A. Arriesgado, Henrietto Q. Castrence, and Atty. Virginia Coloma-Rafael, along with the entire management team, have been the driving force behind this generous giveaway. Their collective vision and dedication underscore TWD’s mission to serve and support its community.

As TWD celebrates 42 years of dedicated service, this umbrella giveaway marks the beginning of a year filled with initiatives aimed at enhancing customer experience and community welfare. The leadership and management of TWD are committed to continuing their legacy of excellence, innovation, and community engagement, with many more projects and events planned for the future.

As the community opens their new umbrellas, they will carry with them a piece of TWD’s history and a symbol of the district’s ongoing commitment to their welfare. Here’s to 42 years of service and many more years of excellence ahead!

S LUTE T BTS ATER HEROE !

In the world of superheroes, there are always vital characters working behind the scenes who make the grand feats of their famous counterparts possible. Just as Thor teleports to the Seven Realms with Heimdall’s aid, Batman relies on Alfred in the Batcave, and King T’Challa depends on Okoye to manage Wakanda’s military forces, our everyday heroes at Tagum Water District (TWD) have their own silent champions. These behind-the-scenes heroes ensure the smooth operation of our water distribution system and are essential to our community’s well-being.

Our field men, construction workers, and repairmen, though often unseen, play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of TWD. Each morning, these unsung heroes don their safety vests and boots, akin to Superman’s suit, preparing for a day of demanding work. Instead of capes and advanced technology, they wield wrenches and rely on their physical strength to lift heavy pipes and manage materials vital for sustaining our water supply. Their resilience is reminiscent of Iron Man, albeit without the high-tech armor.

Under the sweltering heat of the sun, they perform their duties with dedication and perseverance, akin to Endeavor’s fiery strength. Despite the harsh conditions, they work tirelessly, ensuring that the water distribution system functions smoothly. In the evenings, while many rest, these heroes continue their work, fighting the darkness much like Daredevil, but instead of battling villains, they repair pipelines to ensure that our water supply remains uninterrupted throughout the night.

Without these behind-the-scenes heroes, the TWD would not operate as seamlessly as it does. Their unwavering commitment and hard work are integral to the smooth functioning of our community’s essential services. It is time we recognize and celebrate these everyday champions who, like the superheroes of our favorite stories, ensure that we have the resources we need to thrive. Thank you, BTS heroes, for your dedication and exceptional service.

LOUNGE RENOVATION ELEVATES SERVICE AND CUSTOMER COMFORT

Spacious, comfortable, and customer-centric. These were just a few of the positive comments heard during the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony of TWD’s newly renovated customer service lounge on January 8, 2024. This renovation represents one of management’s continuous improvements for 2024, aimed at streamlining processes and delivering a more efficient and customer-friendly experience for every concessionaire.

Lay Minister Robert C. Tesoro led the blessing of the newly renovated Customer Service Area, highlighting TWD’s commitment to enhancing customer satisfaction. The event was attended by Board of Directors Chairperson Arlene J. Adlawan, Dir. Henrietto Q. Castrence, and Acting General Manager Engr. Pilar M. Mula, MSE, RMP, along with key department and division managers.

Also present were dedicated employees whose hard work contributed significantly to this remarkable improvement.

The presence of TWD’s valued concessionaires during the solemn blessing added to the significance of the event. They appreciated the freebies given to mark the occasion, a gesture that further demonstrates TWD’s dedication to providing quality service.

TWD’s customer service lounge now boasts several improvements, including a queuing and sound system, proper ventilation, increased seating capacity, and a prominent Citizen’s Charter. While TWD’s management recognizes that there is always room for improvement, they are committed to steadily enhancing facilities to better serve concessionaires and provide the quality service they deserve.

BEYOND PAPER CUTS: WORKPLACE HAZARDS

“It started from a paper cut.”

Michael Bergers, an American who spent three weeks in a coma recovering from sepsis shares his story. His experience reveals a stark truth: even small injuries can escalate into life-threatening complications.

This reality is not confined to Michael’s experience; it applies equally to any workplace, including ours at Tagum Water District. On May 2, 2024, I walked into the eight-hour Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) seminar expecting nothing more than a routine and standard session. Working in an office environment, I thought the worst I might encounter was a paper cut—but I was wrong.

Divided in two batches, Adrian A. Urdaneta from the Bureau of Fire Protection led the first on April 30, while May Lourdes Bernal, President of the Occupational Safety and Health Network (OSH-NET), led the second on May 2.

The speakers covered work-related incidents and essential safety rules for maintaining a secure environment. Mr. Adrian and Ms. May also provided practical tips for handling emergencies like fires and earthquakes. Beyond discussing regulations, they shared real-life scenarios and challenged us to identify potential risks within our district. These interactive exercises heightened my awareness of daily hazards, not just for myself but also for my coworkers. It became clear that each of us, no matter how small our role, is vital in ensuring each other’s safety.

The cautionary tale about paper cuts highlighted how untreated hazards can spiral into unimaginable consequences. Just as Michael’s life was altered by a paper cut, I realized that even the smallest precautions are crucial in preventing serious accidents. For the employees, that day wasn’t just about learning— it was the beginning of building a culture that safeguards everyone.

SHAKING THINGS UP: A DYNAMIC EARTHQUAKE DRILL UNFOLDS!

Get ready for a shake-up! On May 16, 2024, the Tagum Water District (TWD) held a dynamic earthquake drill at its compound in Tagum City, proving they’re not just prepared for a natural disaster; they’re ready to rock it! TWD knows that being prepared for natural disasters is crucial, especially when it comes to providing essential services like water.

The drill kicked off with a simulated earthquake, giving employees a chance to practice the “drop, cover, and hold on” technique, a vital safety measure during real earthquakes. The simulated tremors were followed by a calm and orderly evacuation, showcasing the discipline and organization of TWD personnel.

Each office had its own team of “drill masters,” keeping a watchful eye on everything and ensuring the drill ran smoothly. The drill also benefited from the participation of visitors, including Lucrecio M. Diuda (LDRRMO IV), Bren D. Cabantingan (Administrative Assistant II), Riden L. Daniles (Driver), and John Leithner B. Miranda (OJT), who lent their expertise to the exercise.

Once everyone was safely gathered at the assembly point, a headcount was conducted to ensure no one was missing. This highlighted the importance of tracking individuals during emergencies, as promptly identifying missing people is crucial for everyone’s safety.

Following the evacuation and headcount, participants received a debriefing and feedback on their performance. This is key for learning and improving future responses, allowing the organization to identify both strengths and areas for improvement. TWD management emphasized the importance of continuous training and preparedness for effective emergency responses.

The successful earthquake drill demonstrated TWD’s commitment to safety and emergency preparedness. With natural disasters becoming more frequent, TWD’s proactive approach serves as a model for other organizations, ensuring the safety and well-being of its employees and stakeholders.

EMERGENCY WATER A LIFELINE AMIDST

The relentless rains of the northeast monsoon and a low pressure area had transformed Davao del Norte into a watery labyrinth. From January 28 to February 2, 2024, the deluge relentlessly pounded the region, leaving 41,183 families displaced and a state of calamity declared. In the face of this crisis, one crucial element remained vital: water.

The Tagum Water District (TWD) knew that clean water was not just a necessity; it was a lifeline. From February 1 to February 6, 2024, TWD implemented an emergency water rationing program, a testament to their unwavering commitment to the community, even amidst the devastation.

The task was immense. Seven barangays in Tagum City and three neighboring municipalities were submerged, with their residents desperate for clean water. TWD field engineers, in coordination with the Management Information Services Division, swiftly identified the most severely affected areas. Water trucks were mobilized, delivering precious resources to Barangays Canocotan, San Miguel, and Mankilam, as well as to evacuees from Barangays Cuambogan, La Filipina, and Mesaoy in New Corella.

But the need was far greater than what TWD could provide alone. The community rallied in support,

Hannah Lynnie

WATER RATIONING: AMIDST THE FLOODING

demonstrating the true spirit of Tagum. Concerned citizens contributed bottles and gallons of water, which were cleaned and refilled for distribution to Barangay Libuganon. TWD personnel donated and refilled bottles for evacuees in the Municipality of Carmen. The BSP Tagum City Council purchased empty bottles, and scouts from the Arriesgado College Foundation refilled them with clean water.

The Rotary Club of Tagum Golden LACES and the Davao del Norte Medical Practitioners Society, Inc. joined the effort, providing essential supplies like medicines, bottled water, and sacks of rice to families in the evacuation facility in the Municipality of Braulio E. Dujali. The Philippine Red Cross also stepped up, coordinating with TWD in water rationing efforts.

Throughout this challenging period, TWD, alongside the community, worked tirelessly to ensure that clean water reached those in need. The spirit of unity and compassion shone brightly, a testament to the strength found in collective action. As Pearl S. Buck, Nobel Prize in Literature 1938 awardee, wrote, “The test of a civilization is in the way that it cares for its helpless members.” In the face of adversity, Tagum Water District and its community rose to the challenge, proving that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can prevail.

TAGUM WD CHAMPIONS MEN’S HEALTH, GENDER PARITY

Steered by the progressive move to promote awareness and improve the well-being of its male workforce, the Tagum Water District organized a comprehensive seminar addressing typical health problems and gender issues. The event, held at Arman’s Function Hall last June 25-27, 2024, saw enthusiastic participation from over 200 male employees across various departments led by distinguished speakers, including Dr. Hairil Salam M. Makol and Mr. Nelson P. Casiano, AFPM.

The first half of the seminar focused on the rise in cases of hypertension and hyperuricemia worldwide and emphasized the significance of early detection and lifestyle tunings. Dr. Makol provided wide-ranging insights into the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures associated with hypertension and high uric acid levels. Participants engaged actively in the seminar, asking questions and sharing their experiences. The discussion on hypertension and uric acid management is part of a broader initiative to enhance employee well-being and productivity.

In the second half of the seminar, Mr. Casiano delivered an engaging discourse on the global gender inequality crisis and its historical background. He discussed how gender roles are changing, the difficulties in attaining gender parity, and the crucial roles that men and women play in promoting sustainable development. An interesting discussion about the relationship between gender and development ensued, with a focus on how gender perspectives should be included in development practices and policies. The significance of establishing a nurturing workplace where all staff feel appreciated and empowered was emphasized during the session.

After attending the program, attendees had a stronger appreciation for the value of leading healthier lives and a fresh resolve to promote gender equality within the agency.

WRITE ON! UNLEASHING THE MAGIC OF WRITTEN WORDS

Who says writing has to be boring? On June 20-21, 2024, twenty-six (26) dedicated participants from various TWD departments discovered the joy of crafting compelling content at the “Effective Writing and Communication Skills” seminar held at the Molave Hotel in Tagum City. Organized by the Human Resource Management Division (HRMD), the two-day event aimed to enhance participants’ writing abilities and overall communication effectiveness. Get ready for a whirlwind of interactive sessions, practical exercises, and real-world examples that will help you unlock your writing potential!

Dr. Jose Elmer Oficiar, recognized as the Most Outstanding Teacher in Region XI in 2022 and recipient of numerous other accolades, led a series of interactive sessions and practical exercises designed to help participants master the art of written communication. He provided valuable insights and real-world examples to illustrate key concepts, allowing participants to engage in hands-on activities, practice their skills, and receive constructive feedback directly from Dr. Oficiar.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the seminar’s comprehensive and practical approach. “This workshop was an eye-opener,” one attendee noted, while another added, “I learned how to convey my ideas more clearly and persuasively, which will undoubtedly advance my career.”

As the demand for strong written communication skills continues to grow across various fields, seminars like this play a crucial role in helping individuals enhance their writing abilities and achieve professional success.

Given the positive outcome of this event, the HRMD plans to hold similar seminars in the future, aiming to equip more individuals with the tools they need to excel in their written communication endeavors.

TAGUM WD UPGRADES LEAK DETECTION TO CUT WATER LOSS

In a proactive move to address water conservation and efficiency, the Tagum Water District (TWD) has ramped up its leak detection activities. This initiative aims to significantly reduce water loss and enhance the reliability of the district’s water supply system.

The TWD, through the Non-Revenue Water Management Division, has implemented a comprehensive inspection program that includes regular monitoring of pipelines. Crews are now conducting systematic checks of all major water mains and service lines, utilizing both manual inspections and modern leak detection equipment.

The water district has invested in cutting-edge technology to detect and repair leaks more effectively. A digital ground microphone, which can detect the faint sounds of water escaping from pipes, even when the leaks are small, is now being utilized throughout the water distribution network. The sensitivity of the equipment allows early detection of leaks before they escalate into more serious problems. By amplifying the sound of the leak, the ground microphone enables technicians to pinpoint the exact location of a leak with high accuracy. This precision reduces the need for extensive excavation and minimizes disruption to the surrounding area.

In addition to deploying new technology, the water district is actively engaging the community in its water conservation efforts. Initiatives to raise public awareness are underway to inform residents of the significance of monitoring leaks and practicing water conservation.

The TWD plans to continue expanding its leak detection and prevention efforts in the coming years. Plans include upgrading older infrastructure, further integration of smart technology, and strengthening the ongoing community engagement programs.

RACING FOR WATER, WALKING FOR PEACE: A UNITED CELEBRATION!

The sun shone brightly on March 22nd, 2024, as the Tagum Water District (TWD) kicked off its World Water Day celebration, embracing the year’s theme, “Water for Peace,” with a unique twist: a spirited run/walk aptly titled “World Water Run/Walk 2024.” This event, held in accordance with the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) Memorandum Circular No. 00124, was a vibrant display of community engagement and a powerful reminder of the importance of water conservation.

The day began with a lively Zumba session, warming up participants for the run/walk that stretched from New City Hall (Avenida) to the TWD office. A diverse group of participants, including representatives from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Sunriser Walker Association, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Members Church of God International (MCGI), and TWD employees themselves, including the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Engr. Arlene J. Adlawan showed up in full force, eager to celebrate “Water for Peace,” the theme for World Water Day 2024.

Top runners were celebrated, with Drake Torreon Ramos taking 1st place, Angelo Acaso Cartagenas in 2nd, and John Louise Ohagan securing 3rd. Special

recognition was also given to the youngest and oldest male and female runners.

The World Water Run/Walk was part of Mina Guli’s global advocacy to raise awareness and inspire action on water in connection with UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 (SDG 6) focusing on “Clean Water and Sanitization by Year 2030.” Guli, a prominent water advocate and adventurer, has dedicated her career to addressing the global water crisis.

In addition to the run, the celebration included a Water Information Awareness segment featuring a Q&A for concessionaires at the TWD customer lounge. Attendees received practical giveaways, including notebooks, ball pens, tumblers, infographic fans, and TWD umbrellas, presented by Directors Norma R. Pereyras and Henrietto Q. Castrence.

The World Water Day celebration at Tagum Water District not only showcased community spirit and active participation but also reinforced the critical message of water conservation. By engaging in meaningful activities and fostering awareness, the event successfully highlighted the importance of water and motivated everyone to contribute towards a sustainable future.

A Woman’s Triumph

A New Era: The First Female Meter Reader at TWD

At 25 years old, Valerie Faye G. Mesiona has made history by becoming the first female meter reader at the Tagum Water District (TWD). And let me tell you, this isn’t just a job for her; it’s a testament to her determination and a symbol of progress. It’s a reminder that we women can achieve anything we set our minds to, even if it means breaking into traditionally male-dominated fields.

Valerie, a driven and energetic young woman, brings a unique blend of skills and experience to the role. Her journey to the meter reader’s position was a testament to her passion and dedication, proving that she was the right person for the job. Beyond her studies, she was also an athletic scholar, showcasing her competitive spirit on the volleyball court for her university.

“I’ve always been a go-getter,” she says with a smile that could light up a room. “I love challenges, and I’m not afraid to step outside of my comfort zone.” And that’s exactly what she did by taking on the traditionally maledominated role of meter reader at the Tagum Water District.

While some might see meter reading as a mundane task, Valerie views it as an opportunity to connect with the community and ensure accurate billing. “It’s important for people to have accurate water bills,” she explains, her voice filled with a genuine concern for fairness. “It’s a matter of transparency and making sure everyone is treated equally.”

But beyond the numbers and the meters, her story is about breaking barriers and inspiring others. “I want to show young women that they can achieve anything they set their minds to,” she says, her eyes sparkling with determination. “There are no limits to what we can do.”

With her infectious enthusiasm and unwavering determination, Valerie is proving that she’s not just a meter reader; she’s a role model, a pioneer, and a testament to the power of ambition and hard work.

Her job as a meter reader is a powerful example of TWD’s dedication to inclusivity. TWD is a haven for Gender and Development (GAD), actively promoting equal opportunities for all. This commitment is evident in their hiring practices, where gender is never a barrier, especially in traditionally male-dominated positions.

We’re excited to see what Valerie accomplishes next, both on and off the field, as she continues to make her mark at the Tagum Water District, a place where gender equality is a reality, not just a goal.

DEEPFAKE SCAM:

DON’T FALL FOR THE FAKE

The internet is a playground of possibilities, but it’s also a breeding ground for new scams. One of the most alarming trends is the weaponization of deepfakes, hyperrealistic AI-generated videos that can make anyone say or do anything.

Imagine receiving a Facebook Messenger video call from your loved one; their voice and face are eerily convincing. They plead for help, claiming they’ve been in an accident and need an urgent Gcash transfer to cover hospital bills. This scenario, unfortunately, is no longer science fiction; it’s happening right now.

Deepfake scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They prey on our trust and emotional vulnerability, making it difficult to discern reality from fabrication. The technology is evolving rapidly, with even audio deepfakes becoming incredibly convincing.

So, how can we protect ourselves?

Be skeptical of any unexpected requests for money, especially through video calls, even if they seem to come from a familiar source. Verify the identity of the caller through independent channels. Educate yourself about deepfake technology and its potential for misuse.

Remember, the internet is a powerful tool, but it’s also a double-edged sword. Be vigilant, stay informed, and don’t let deepfakes steal your hard-earned money.
