OnSunday7thMay,peopleof SystongatheredatCentralParkto celebratetheCoronationofKing CharlesIII,thattookplacethe previousday.Thiswasadayforthe entirecommunitytocome togetherandcelebrateour newKing,haveapicnicwith familyandfriendsandtakein theamazingentertainmentof Syston.Theeventstartedat middayandranthroughuntil 8pm.

Furtherafieldinthepark,families broughtalongpicnictables,dressing themincoronationdecorationto enjoytheirpicnics.Somepeople wereoutsoakingupalittlesunshine, takingintheatmosphere.Therewas somuchchatterandlaughterfroma wonderfulturnoutforthecommunity. TheBaldwinTrusthavebeen operatingtheirfullyaccessible narrowboatcruisesalongthe Leicestershirewaterwayssince1983, whentheTrustwasstartedbyBert Halseyandhiswifeasawayof providingrespitetothepatientsof theBaldwinWardatLeicesterFrith Hospital.

TheTrustcurrentlyoperatetwo narrowboats:Dandelion,fromBarrow Boating,andHalseyonDaysfrom LeicesterMarina.Bothboatsare wheelchairaccessibleandcan accommodateupto12people. Forthefirsttime,inthenineyears thatlocalresidentsTerryandVicki havebeenorganisingclassiccar runsforRainbow’sHospicefor ChildrenandYoungpeople,theyhad verychallengingwetweather.

Ineverfailtobeamazedbythe amountofweedsthatcontinually germinateandgrowonmyallotment, it’saconstantbattle,hoeingtwicea weekhelps.Inormallygrowsome SweetWilliamsforcutflowerstotake home:theylastlongerthanmost otherflowersinavase,lastyearthe cropwasquitesmallandIneglected thembutthey’veself-seededwhich hascreatedquiteaheadache.I’ve hoedandrakedoverthegroundat least20timesandthey’restill germinatingandcomingup-Iwon’t letthathappenagain.

It’llsoonbemid-summerandatthis timeofyearourplantsneedmore water.Soilsthatarerichinwell-rotted organicmatterarethebestfor retainingmoistureastheorganic matteractslikeasponge.Mulches arealsogreatforretainingmoisture. Whenappliedtoalreadydampsoils, mulchesreducerequirementsfor water.Imulcheverythingwithleaves, grasscuttingsandwoodshavingsout ofmychickencoopetc;thisnotonly meanslesswatering,itcanmean lessweeding!Waterbuttsareaboon allyearround,butespeciallysoin theheatofsummer,rainwaterisfar betterthantapwatersosaveas muchasyoucan.

Courgettes,outdoorcucumbers, tomatoesandsweetcorncanallnow goinbutbeawaretheydon’tlikecold weatherwhilethey’restillestablishing outdoors.Althoughtheriskofafrost haspassedformost,dostillkeepan eyeoutforcoldnights,acombination ofcoldandwetconditionscanbe damagingtotheseyoungplantsand setthemback.

ThenormalSundaymorning10am CommunionServiceonMay7thwasone ofgreatmusicaljoy.Ourorganist, MatthewJones,playedCrownImperial fortheentryofthepriest,RevJohn Leonard,followedbythefullCoronation fanfareintroductiontothesingingofthe NationalAnthem,whichwassungwith greatfervour.AftertheGospelreading Matthewplayed‘Iwasglad’(thepiece usedastheentrytotheceremonial AbbeyonSaturday).

FortheSermonRev.Johnusedan Acrosticasabasisforhisteaching.He usedeachletterofthenameCharles,as inthefollowing:Cforcommitted,Hfor honest,AforAnointed,RforRoyal,Lfor Likeable,EforEducatedandfinallySfor Sincere.

Overaspecialgalaweekendonthe 17thand18thofJune,therailway willwelcomevisitorstocelebratethe anniversaryandlooktothefuture. OntheSaturday,thelargest locomotiveontheline,(amemberof thepowerful9Fclasswhichdates fromthe1950s)willhavethehonour ofpullingatrainmadeupoffifty freightwagons,somethingtheGCR hasneverattemptedbefore.

Duringtheeventaroundmidday,the QuadrangleofWindsorCastle(a privatearea,whichtheScout associationhadtheprivilegetouse) filledwitharound2,000awardholders andguests.Theband’sfirst performancewasamarchingmusical displaytoentertaintheguestswho wereintheQuadranglebeforethe eventstarted.Beforeandduringthe marchingmusicaldisplay,theweather wasn’tverykind,andtheBandhadto wearclearponchostotryandkeep dry.Afterthisthough,thesuncame outanditwasaniceday.

Ihaveahogfamilythathasfoundits ownhomeinacosycornerofthe gardenthisisusedyearafteryearand anothersinglehogthathasmovedinto thehedgehoghouse.

Iputoutsmallsizedhardhedgehog foodandfreshwatereverynight,it’s verydifficulttotellhowmanycomebut Icanidentifysixbysizeandsome slightcolourdifferencesbutalsothey cancomebacklater!Theyarevery comicaltowatchwiththeirsquabbles andterritoryclaimsbutalsowatching themsniffingoutthegrubs,slugsetc peopleforgetthattheyhelpyour gardenbygettingridofpestthatcome outatnight.

Therecognitionofthetrailbythe CountyCouncilfollowedlastyear’s publicationbyMOWSofabookofsix walksalongtheRiversEyeand Wreake.TheNavigation,whichopened around1794,largelyfollowedthe courseoftheriversandenabledhorsedrawnbargestocarrycargointo Meltonfornearly100years.

MOWS’fivefootpathrangerseach keepawatchonseparatesectionsof theriverandadjoiningfootpathsand reportbackonanyproblemsthey encounter.Therangersmetlastweek attheBellInncommunitypubinFrisby ontheWreake.

createdin1987.TheRoundworks closelywiththeCountyCounciland landownersandorganisesregularwork partiestomaintainthepath.

Thebookwithdetailsofthesixwalks wasonlypublishedayearagobuthas beensopopularthatithasjustbeen reprintedforthethirdtime.Mostwalks takearoundacoupleofhoursforboth theoutwardandreturnjourneyand someincludeacircularroute.

FootpathrangersfromtheMeltonand OakhamWaterwaysSociety(MOWS) willshortlycompletethemarkingofthe routeoftheMeltonNavigationwhich linkedthetowntothenationalcanal networkthroughoutthe1800s.

LeicestershireCountyCouncilgave permissionforanew‘Melton Navigation’symboltobeattachedto thehundredofwaymarkersalongthe variousfootpathswhichmakeup15miletrailfromMeltontoSyston.

OrganiserMikePatterson,wholooks aftertheareaaroundFrisby,said:“The publicationofthebookofwalkslast yearhasencouragedmanymore peopletocomeanddiscoverthe beautyofourriversandnowthe additionofNavigationstickerstothe waymarkerswillmakeiteasierfor walkerstokeeptotherightpath. “Wearenowplanningtohold organisedwalksalongpartsofthe routewherewewillbeabletopointout featuresofinterest,includingtheold lockswhichallowedthebargesto moveuptheriver.”

Therangersplantoworkwithother organisationstoensurethefootpaths arekeptopen.Alsopresentatthe meetingwasDavidWilliamsofthe LeicestershireRoundwhoprovided informationontheexperiencegained sincethe100-milefootpathwas

Itisnolongerpossibletowalk alongsidetheriverallthewaybecause, whentheNavigationwasabandonedin thelate1800s,thetowpath–along whichhorseswouldpulltheirbarges–revertedtoprivatelandowners. Mostofthe12originallockswhich werebuilttomaintainwaterlevelsfor millsandenablebargestotraveluphill, can,however,stillbeseen.Someare inremarkablygoodcondition.
