1100 Homes Proposed for South East Syston one behind St Hilda’s and the other behind the Blackfriars development haven’t been maintained and contributed to the floods in Syston. So residents are anxious that this size of development with only add to the problem, as one resident said each of these properties have at least two bathrooms, which will flow into a drainage system that didn’t cope during the recent floods, causing sewerage to go through some of those homes that were flooded. It isn’t acceptable to put additional pressure on a drainage system that wasn’t built for such large developments.

Traffic. Another concern raised was the volume of traffic coming from the development. If 1,100 homes are built then there will probably be around 2,200 cars on roads through Syston that are already at capacity. Residents who live on Goodes Lane stated that currently they have difficulty exiting their drives during school drop off in the morning and pick up times in the afternoon as the traffic tails back from Melton Road as far back as Beech Drive. They said if a road is linked with the end of St Paul’s Drive, then cars will tail back up that road, taking away the quiet nature of that street and increase pollution. A comment from TW was that they propose a bus route for the development, but as another resident said, “that's ok initially but once the money for that bus comes to an end, the bus will be removed, so it is not a long term practical solution”.

There are other roads proposed to leave the development across Barkby Lane and join the road near the Duckpond junction, this will increase the amount of traffic in this area from Thorpebury in the Limes as well, again causing problems in congestion going down to the roundabout on the A607 at the Thurmaston retail park. Taylor Wimpey (TW) have put forward a proposal for 1100 homes adjacent to the South East Side of Syston, an increase from the original proposal of 960 homes.

They held an open meeting for residents on Thursday 25h September in the Community centre.

Around 200 people visited the event to see the proposal and give feedback to Taylor Wimpey, about the main concerns of residents.

These were as follows: Flooding. Syston has been flooded three times within sixteen months between October 2023 and January 2025 with increasing number of homes being affected each time. The illustrations showed some Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) across the proposed development along with open spaces, a primary school and sports fields.

However, it was pointed out to TW that the existing SuDS,

Again an area that is barely coping with the current traffic.

Barkby Parish Council have objected to this aspect of the design too, we will print their article in the next issue.

Health Provision - Another concern raised was the lack of provision for health care. Syston’s Health Centre covers not just Syston, but the surrounding villages including Queniborough, Barkby, East Goscote and Rearsby, plus other villages around the Town. With the increase of building other than this proposal it is putting pressure on the existing Health services including dentists.

The Health Centre itself is stretched with some residents not able to get an appointment. There is no provision on the plan for any of these services and when asked TW said there would be a doctors in the Thorpebury development. Although a primary school is proposed, what about post 11 education? There is no mention of a school for this age.

Farmland - The other major concern is that this development will be built on productive farmland, and in the current climate we need to be able to feed our nation, so using productive farmland for housing doesn’t seem to be the right way to go. It’s no good having homes if we can’t feed those families and existing ones in the area. The use of productive farmland should be exempt for large developments like this one.

Size of Properties - The size of the homes proposed was questioned at the meeting. Locally we have a huge stock of four and five bedroomed homes. But have a shortage of affordable housing with two and three bedroom homes, suitable for young people getting on the housing market and young families. How can the younger generation get on the property ladder without having small enough starter homes to account for this. Also appropriate sized homes for older people wishing to downsize.

Power - The use of all electric

powered homes with limited solar panels, to supply a four bedroom house, as illustrated at the event with power, it is necessary to have around 12/14 solar panels, only six were illustrated and no battery, which is necessary to help reduce usage from the National Grid and even pay the occupier for spare power, without a battery any power generated by the solar panels will go straight to the grid with no benefit to the owner.

There was an air source heat pump, but no provision of an alternative source of power, it is fully reliant on electricity, which is ok if there is isn't a power cut. Syston suffered a few power cuts last winter, which implies that the national grid isn’t able to cope with the current housing locally, so why put more pressure on a system that appears unable to cope by putting more pressure on it. Thus causing problems for the existing town and its residents.

Without major investment into the existing services of water, drainage, power supply, then developing around this area, should be put on hold until such time as these services are improved.

Taylor Wimpey presented this development as land owned by Merton College Oxford since 1271 when it acquired it from Robert de Percy and that they have a long history of sustainable and responsible stewardship.

Residents feel that this is not a responsible or sustainable development. It is the size of a village but without the amenities and is putting excessive reliance on the existing small town of Syston, which doesn’t show a responsible approach to the housing needs locally.

Although this event was for feedback to Taylor Wimpey and the online feedback has now ended.

It is important that you comment on this proposal when it has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council for planning, which is believed to be around the end of November 2025.

As was the case with our ‘Drive it Day’ Run in April, we were again blessed with lovely warm and sunny weather, with only a short, sharp shower towards the end of the run causing those of us in open-topped cars having to briefly put the roof up.

We began the Run at the ever-helpful and accommodating Stonehurst Farm in Mountsorrel, then followed a superb 70-mile scenic route along minor country lanes through Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Rutland. A welcome mid-way break was taken at the Buttercups Tearoom near Billesdon, where the very helpful and obliging staff not only catered for our coffee and cake needs but also gave us the opportunity to get up close and personal with their flock of alpacas.

The route finished at the delightful Helenium Tea Rooms at Barnsdale Gardens near Rutland Water, where

Our November production is tipped to be one of the funniest plays we’ve put on at Syston QT Theatre Group.

We’re chomping at the bit to bring Amanda Whittington’s heartwarming comedy ‘Ladies’ Day’ to the stage in Syston. And with just over a month to go, the going looks good for a strong finish come show week.

Directed by our own firm favourite, Leigh White, ‘Ladies’ Day’ tells the story of four ladies who work as fish filleters in a fish factory in Hull. Work, love, and life are just one long hard slog for the foursome – Pearl, Jan, Shelley, and Linda – who are closely factory-supervised by Joe. But the ladies’ fortunes are set to change. As the girls head off to Royal Ascot on Ladies’ Day for a flirt, flutter,

fizz, and fun, secrets start to be revealed. If their luck holds out, they could hit the jackpot and lot more besides!

Our leading line-up features familiar favourites and some exciting newcomers. They’ve been busy putting in the groundwork in rehearsals, warming up for putting on a winning performance for our loyal Syston QT supporters.

It’s been wonderful to see our cast finding their feet with their roles over the past few weeks, which isn’t difficult when Amanda Whittington’s writing is so clever, funny, and relatable. Amanda Whittington has created an ensemble of characters that we can all recognise; from Pearl who’s the eldest of the group - facing her twilight years, free from a job she’s done for years (she’s not “retiring”!) - through to Patrick – a young racing jockey who’s become tired and

disillusioned with his racing life and just wants some normality and a good meal without the worry of gaining a few extra pounds. Whilst our female cast members pick up the gauntlet of perfecting each of the four leading ladies in the play, our male cast members all play two different roles, which is a great challenge and incredible to see the switch-up.

Hello, For those expecting Richard’s usual tales from the plot, I'm sorry to report that Richard (Grizz to many) is taking an enforced health break. I'm sure we all sincerely wish him the very best of luck through his sudden serious illness, and for the best of outcomes and the speediest, safe recovery. The allotments don't feel the same at the moment, without Richard’s daily laughter cheering the air. His shed and friendly company is like the social epicentre of Syston allotments.

This is Kate here, Richard’s 10 year Syston allotment friend and fellow nearneighbour plot holder. I've been 'allotmenting' since the 1990's, starting in Derbyshire and have been asked to step in, so I'll be covering Tales from the Plot for a while, while Richard is sadly not well enough. I hope to hand back to him as soon as we can.

A few of us are helping to look after his plot and chickens along with his family, who's main focus and priority is rightly on Richard.

At the family's request, and in accordance with Richard’s mentioned plans last month - not to leave his potatoes in the ground to frosts and spoiling this year, I harvested his many potatoes to give away.

These were distributed to the family.

Syston Food Bank at the Methodist church had some, as did a different local community project in Birstall that cooks fresh lunches for elders. St Peter & St Paul’s church had a few for their Harvest Service, as did a neighbour at the allotments (bearing in mind that there are at least 122 plotholder 'neighbours' in our allotment community, on the seven acre site). He himself is recovering from two operations and has consequently lost much of his own vegetable produce this season due to being unwell.

And finally, I gave a home to the few that inevitably got inadvertent fork prong damage in the digging. I call these 'quick chips' as they would not store long, but after a clean up, are still good for using up

quickly.

I made a lazy / hungry / energy saving shepherds pie.. basically I was so hungry after the 3rd session of harvesting, I sped up my cooking by just having mash on top of the veg and mince and didn't crisp the topping in the oven. It was still very tasty just having faster, softer organic potatoes.

After digging and before covering some of the ground with weed suppressant, I was envious of Richard's successful potato crop, a bit bigger than my own, but more envious of the healthy abundance of his huge topsoil earthworms that I found, then redistributed to his parsnip patch to over-winter among the root veg. I was observed doing this, by a Robin, who sensibly must have realised the worms were larger than its beak / gape, so didn't wrestle with them for lunch, just supervised my activities.

Worms are a great sign of soil health.

During the winter I don't entirely clear my ground. I always leave some roots in for worms, beetles and other beneficial soil dwellers. Particularly nitrogen fixing vegetable plants like legumes - peas and beans, as well as companion flowers and Green Manures which also add beneficial shallow roots. I would love to have as many worms as Richard and am slowly increasing them year on year.

I sometimes use these useful Green Manure plants to cover any bare soil, both in summer and late sowing for early winter. These add nutrients when the ground is resting, or until frosts finish them. They also protect the soil from weeds (I wish I could say 100%).

Phacelia, shown right, is my favourite, as bees adore its curly purple flowers, but clovers, mustard, buckwheat are also a fast growing and useful weed suppressant. Ryes and winter vetch are good for winter cover. The intention is that these are all dug in before flowering to nourish the ground, or that's the theory, if you don't fall in love with the flowers and leave some for pollinators and allow repeat sowings.

Richard still has a good variety of veggies growing in his ground and netted tunnels.

I love the Tuscan Kale also called Cavalo Nero, Italian, Black, Palm, and Dinosaur Kale I particularly like roasting the leaves on a flat tray with a splash of olive oil and salt, just until crispy and easy to crush up into dusty bits (disposing of stem) 15-20 mins approx. An easy addition if you have the oven on for something else. They make a light crunchy, crumbly snack or topping and for kids they are unrecognisable as the healthy vegetables they are, but tasty. .. sweet and nutty. (less bitter than curly Kale). The Baldwin Trust Hosts VIP Event Celebrating Community Success on Board Halseyon Days

The Baldwin Trust, a Leicestershire based narrowboat charity, welcomed distinguished guests aboard their specially designed narrowboat, Halseyon Days, for a special VIP event celebrating a successful sailing season and raising awareness of its vital work.

Founded in 1983, the Baldwin Trust has over 40 years of service to the community, offering private, crewed narrowboat cruises for family, friends and community groups. As a volunteer-led charity, the Trust provides trips for

individuals and groups who might otherwise face challenges and barriers to enjoying the therapeutic effects of time on the water.

The VIP event welcomed 12 guests, including local councillors and community organisations, with the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr David Northage, as guest of honour. Guests had the opportunity to learn about the Trust’s history and achievements, view Halseyon Days’ facilities—including wheelchair lift and accessible toilet—and view a recently launched British Sign Language (BSL) signed information and safety video. To add to the experience, guests were invited to take the tiller and steer the boat during a short cruise along the river, receiving their own steering certificate to mark the occasion.

During the event, the Chair of Trustees, Richard Jayes, delivered an engaging talk outlining the highlights of the 2025 season, the ongoing challenges faced by the charity, and the profound impact of Supported Cruises. The talk emphasised the Trust’s commitment to supporting people of all ages, especially those with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, and individuals experiencing social isolation. Richard also reflected on the dedication of Baldwin Trust volunteers and the importance of continuing to improve accessibility and inclusion on local waterways.

The event aimed to raise awareness of the Baldwin Trust’s work and celebrate a season of approaching 200 trips delivered against a challenging backdrop of waterway closures from weather and

Councillor Report from Simon Bradshaw In what has been another busy month I had the pleasure of joining other local stakeholders and Councillors from the Borough and County and the Mayor of Charnwood, on a short journey on the Baldwin Trusts Canal Boat at Thurmaston Marina, The trust is a registered charity and is run entirely by volunteers, the boats are equipped with a disabled lift and are inclusive to all and offers a free of charge narrowboat cruise to community groups I attended Sileby flood drop in on the 9th October at Sileby Community

presentation on Saturday 6th September for his work at the cemetery. We are eagerly awaiting to see if we have been awarded anything in the cemetery of the year awards.

We’re coming into a quiet time now where all we can do is to keep the cemetery tidy, remove dead flowers and tributes. As the winds

increase we will endeavour to replace tributes hopefully in the correct places if we don’t manage to achieve this please accept our apologies.

The ‘Lest We Forget’ plaque has been placed in the Poppy flower bed next to the old fountain as a reference to those who gave all in WW1 and WW2.

Centre, this was a great event which had over 60 members of the public in attendance. It was run by LCC as the lead flood authority and it was good to be able to talk with all major stakeholders such as the Environment Agency, Seven Trent, our own LCC team and Charnwood Borough Council, there was also a visit by Flood Mary who was advising homeowners on how to flood proof their homes, our MP Edward Argar was also in attendance.

Local Government Reorganisation The deadline for the County Councils submission for Local government reorganisation is 28th November and I can confirm that LCC is proposing a

single unitary council for Leicestershire and Rutland as the most beneficial for services and financially, with no expansion of the City Boundary, this is in line with my own thinking and is one of the points I campaigned on at the May elections.

Taylor-Wimpey Proposed development at South East Syston – I have received many e-mails from concerned residents regarding this proposed development and I have been advising everyone to contact Charnwood Borough Council with their objections once the Application goes live at the end of November, I shall be submitting my own objection as well.

church had been beautifully decorated the day before by a team of eager volunteers.

The banner created by children at Syston Summer Fayre hung on the altar and looked splendid. It was a joyful occasion as we celebrated the good gifts of God’s creation. A large amount of donations were collected for the Food Bank.

Afterwards there was a bring and share lunch in the Church Hall, a great opportunity for fellowship and friendship. Thank you to all who helped.

Ride and Stride On Saturday 13th September the church was open for the annual Ride and Stride event in aid of Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust. Thank you to Theresa who took part in the event and raised £282 half of which goes to the Trust and half to

our church. Thank you to everyone who sponsored the event and greeted the cyclists visiting the church.

The Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Melton and Syston I wanted to update Stn readers on a couple of local issues that I know remain of concern to the town.

Firstly, I took the opportunity recently to speak in the House of Commons about the strong local opposition to the city mayor's proposed land-grab of villages and towns like Syston, Thurmaston, Queniborough and other nearby villages which would see them absorbed into an expanded city as part of the Government's reorganisation of local government. I set out to the Minister the local opposition to any such change, and called on the Minister to commit that our area would not be absorbed against its wishes into the city. While she refused to give that commitment, I will continue to fight for local views to be listened to, and for Syston to remain where it rightly belongs firmly in the county of Leicestershire.

It was also a real pleasure, during Community Transport Week recently, to pay a visit to Paul Lomas, Chairman of Syston and District Volunteer Centre (SDVC), the Centre's Trustees, and the team to hear more about their work in the

community over the past year, their many awards over recent years for the fantastic work their volunteer drivers do, and the challenges they and other volunteer centres face, for example in finding more volunteer drivers.

The SDVC has over 50 volunteer drivers on its books, but additional suitable volunteers are always needed, particularly after the Centre's record c.9,200 trips for people in the year prior to the end of September.

Syston and our area is incredibly lucky to have something as special as the volunteer centre in the town, providing volunteer drivers to help, for example, get members of the local community to hospital appointments etc. It is a huge jewel in Syston's crown, and that is down to the trustees and volunteers who help, literally, keep the show on the road - my huge thanks on behalf of our local community to them all.

The European Convention on Human Rights There is a lot of misinformation going around social media and even in the main media about the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), implying it came out of the European Union and imposed upon the UK. This is untrue, so we thought we would provide you, our readers with the facts, so you can make up your own mind as to whether or not it is a good thing.

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), often referred to as the European Bill of Human Rights, was drawn up by the Council of Europe, with British lawyer Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe playing a key leading role in its drafting.

The convention built on the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights and was a result of a collaboration between members of the Council of Europe. It came into force in 1953.

Key Individuals and Organisations: Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe: A British MP and lawyer, he was a key figure in drafting the ECHR. Council of Europe: An International organisation with the goal of

upholding human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. It was founded after the Second World War in 1949, its members were responsible for drafting the ECHR to protect human rights. You can view the 46 European members via this website: www.coe.int/en/web/aboutus/our-member-states Winston Churchill: The ECHR proposal was originally put forth by Winston Churchill.

Other British Figures: Lord Layton and other UK representatives also played significant roles in shaping the Convention.

Purpose and Creation: Post-WWII Context: The ECHR was created to prevent future atrocities and to establish a legal framework to safeguard fundamental rights after World War II and the Holocaust.

Basis in the Universal Declaration: The ECHR's principles were based on the earlier United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Strasbourg: The drafting of the ECHR took place in Strasbourg during the summer of 1949.

Key Features: Binding Treaty: The ECHR is an international treaty that member states of the Council of Europe are bound to. It is a separate body to the

European Union (EU), although any European country wishing to join the EU has to be a member of the Council of Europe first.

Protects Citizens: It protects the human rights of all individuals within the jurisdiction of signatory states.

Came into Force in 1953: The convention formally became effective on September 3, 1953.

So basically, it was a British idea, not something imposed upon us by the EU! It actually protects us all as individuals. If there is a flaw with its use, then that needs to be addressed, not getting rid of the whole Convention.

An Evening with M. P. Wright at the Age UK Bookshop

My collection of signed books has grown even bigger after the Age UK bookshop were visited by local bestselling author, M.P Wright, who launched his exclusive collection of short stories No Pockets in a Shroud at Age UK on 6th October.

M. P. Wright was joined by journalist and editor, Tony R Cox, to discuss all things writing. First published in 2014, M.P Wright’s novel Heartman started out as a script featuring fictional detective, J.T. Ellington, until feedback from fellow creative writers saw his story form a novel. Seven years and five novels later, the entire series was concluded, until now! It seems Ellington remained on Wright’s mind, leading him to write ‘Kiss Them for Me’ - a novella which features alongside two previously written short stories in the No Pockets in a Shroud collection.

After growing up in Syston himself, M.P. Wright shared stories of his time in the area, leading us all to reminisce about our Syston memories – particularly the pubs! Having lived in the area all my life, it was nice to find someone so close to home who has been successful in the writing world, giving me yet more inspiration to achieve my own writing dreams.

interesting was hearing about the changes in the publishing industry that have taken place over Wright’s career, including the challenges he faced with writing about the Windrush era. I cannot wait to read the series to find out more about this fascinating period.

As well as discussing his previous work, M. P. Wright also gave us a sneak preview of his new novel which is being taken in a different direction to his original series, with a new pen name and a new protagonist at the heart of the plot.

Annual Exhibition Celebrates Vibrant Local Talent

Leicester Sketch Club has been helping artists to develop their artworks since 1898 when artists met monthly to have their work critiqued.

You can see in this photo an early club trip to Ashby Castle. We continue the legacy with sketching and social activities and a couple of critiques a year and have great fun all the while.

Of course, an evening at the bookshop would not be complete without homemade cakes and a surprise glass of Prosecco! A massive thanks to the staff and volunteers at the bookshop for organising this brilliant event, and of course to M.P Wright and Tony Cox for being such down to earth, humorous and informative hosts The book club takes place on the first Monday of every month.

The Chindits One Man’s Story

As we approach remembrance this month, we wanted to feature this article about one man who was from Syston and his journey through that part of the World War that is still a bit of a mystery even though we recognised the 80th anniversary of VJ day this year.

His name was Oliver B. Lockton, his daughter and son-in-law sent us the information, which we have summarised here due to space, but we will put his diary up on our website should you wish to read it in full.

Corporal (Cpl) Oliver B. Lockton can be seen in the photograph above, he is on the third row, second from the right. He was part of the 13th Platoon ‘C’ Coy. 7th Bt. Leicestershire regiment. The picture was taken on board the troopship while on the way to India before deployment to Burma and ‘ABERDEEN’ a fortified outpost behind enemy lines and also of three good friends of his from Leicester.

It all began after the sad passing of Mr Lockton when they were clearing his house they came across an old attaché case, on opening it they discovered he had kept all his records of service from when he was called up in 1940 to his demob in local businesses this year when we asked for raffle prizes and we would like to thank them all for their generous contributions, Bunz N Roses for £100 cash and a Gift Voucher, Church View Nursery for their Hanging Basket, Jules at Stems

What followed was a five year investigation to discover the reality of these brave men who served so far away.

The result is a detailed record of the engagement of the group known as “The Chindits”.

As it has been the 80th anniversary this year of Victory in Japan Day (VJ Day) which is not as well known as VE Day, it is still of importance particularly to the families of military personnel who served in that conflict.

Mr Lockton worked at Imperial Typewriters as a store clerk before joining the 7th Leicesters at Nottingham. He trained in East Coast Defence before being sent out to India in 1942 where he did his Jungle training, he was then sent to Burma.

In his detailed accounts he listed all the action that he took part in and the conditions they lived in, which were hot and humid which led to uniforms becoming mouldy and had to be disposed of and replaced.

The survivors of the 7th bt along with the 2nd bt. did not come home until December 1946! Oliver came home in November of that year.

After he was discharged, he returned to continue working at Imperial Typewriters Leicester until retirement at 65.

Dear Editor, Syston is a wonderful place to live particularly when the town is adorned in glorious floral technicolour. The Clock Dial entrance to Central Park, opposite Tesco’s, looked magnificent this year festooned with flowers as did the hanging baskets with their cascading floral displays around the town. It has been a symphony of colour along the brook and very uplifting. Just looking at these displays makes aches, pains and worries feel far less important.

Probably the best antidepressant ever. Many congratulations to Syston Town Council, Syston Councillors and all the businesses involved.

However, I read with interest the brilliant letter in our great Syston Town News from a resident regarding the forgotten Cinderella funded area (not only for the lack of Christmas lighting), known as ‘The Green’ off the High Street. It was about the raised flower beds that have been completely ignored and become a

haven for litter and other debris for the last few years, even though this represents a significant gateway to the town centre, with 3,000 vehicles passing by every day.

The area was tastefully reconfigured some years ago to a high standard.

But without any consultation missing block paving, starting from about five years ago, with the collusion of Leicestershire County Council, is continuing to be sneakily replaced with ugly tarmac, desecrating the area, and making it look more like a chess board. Unbelievably this is in Syston’s designated Conservation Area. We often complain about juvenile vandalism but this is an act of council vandalism. Where were the Charnwood Borough Council Conservation Officers when this started? Will the council manager that is giving instructions for this work to be carried out be reprimanded? In a Conservation Area CBC are assiduously speedy to insist that roof slates are replaced with like for like under threat of harsh penalties.

I urge our hard-working caring town councillors, of all political persuasions, to have an on-site meeting to see this for themselves and resolve to get the area smartened up once again.

Dear Editor, So! After leaving our home of 46 years due to extensive flooding on the 6th January we are finally back, been living in chaos with a tradesman or three still milling around though, but ‘home’!

What a year 2025 has been, there’s been ups there’s been ‘several downs’ and stressful headaches along the journey for a variety of reasons. It’s been full steam ahead once again for the MADS Group and we’re still doing everything we can to help the community of Syston and still trying to come up with ideas of raising funds for our group. So our work forever on going.

Everyone was thrilled and over the moon that MADS Group made the front page of the Stn for the first time in five years.

It was a really proud moment for the group.

For those of you who are just finding out about us, here’s a rundown of who we are and what we do.

Who are we?

We are a non-profit support group called MADS. (Mental health, Anxiety and Depression Support). We are run by a group of us who all have our own experiences with mental health in some way shape or form and we all have different experiences to each other. Five of us run the group with a carefully selected team of volunteers. We are here to make members feel comfortable, relaxed and to give them a place to feel safe. Members can also talk to a pair of our team if they need to let something off their chest.

What do we do?

We primarily started as a simple coffee morning group but decided that we needed something more, so we started to include various activities to keep members minds active. We never solely do just one activity. Here’s some of the stuff we do: - Crafts to help that motor function in our brains.

- Quizzes to have a laugh and test our knowledge in a fun way.

- Karaokes aren't a regular thing but we have found this helps people increase their confidence and have fun.

- Bingo is a favourite and its good for helping people with numbers and digits.

- Health and well being discussions are great for us all to talk together about things like coping mechanisms, support networks, mindful home activities etc.

- Talking sessions are also a good way for everyone to talk and get to know

each other. We encourage people to be comfortable with one another.

We also try to arrange visitors to our group and in the past we have had the following with some of them who continue returning to us: - U3A Crafter, Helen Disley - U3A’s Happy Ukelele Band - Mental Health Professionals - Animal Therapy (Animals for Parties) - The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service - The Leicestershire Police / Syston’s Local Officers - A Hypnotherapist - Entertainers - Carl Holyland with a Self Defence Session - Syston Community Flood Group - A visitor from Voluntary Action Leicester/BUILD We have done a lot in five years and had plenty of visitors but please do remember, we are merely here to support people with mental health and loneliness. We wont ever focus on one activity. A few people have been regarding us as a craft group or constantly expecting one activity all the time. We are a support group who tries to give our members different forms of enrichment to help our minds, brains, confidence and self esteem. If this group sounds like its for you or a family member then please do come along to our group on a Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm at the Syston Working Mens Club.

What's been happening at our clubs lately - Our Tigers (4-6 yr olds) have grown from strength to strength and are now expanding their journey to their 2nd grade to become Yellow Belts.

We had 13 students getting ready to take their black belts during last month, October, and also one student preparing for his 2nd Dan black belt - This will be a great achievement if they all pass - So watch this space!

We also have some very good hopefuls taking part in the British Championships, which will be held this November.

World Master James Freer was awarded his 8th Degree Black Belt by the Grand Masters of our association - TAGB (Tae Kwon-do Asso. of Great Britain) Mr Freer's daughter, Jasmine Freer, passed her 4th Degree Black Belt and was Awarded 'Best in Black Belt Grading' Award out of 600 students that day!

New Barkby WI Shirley Franklin, President of New Barkby W.I., welcomed members and one visitor to the institute’s October meeting.

Jerusalem was sung, then everyone stood in a minute’s silence in memory of former member Dolours Murphy who had recently passed away.

Business matters followed, with repeats of past events, including a canal boat trip which had to be abandoned after a crew member fell overboard, so there will be a trip planned for next year. Also, members who visited Kilworth Theatre for a Proms concert enjoyed that visit.

Speaker, Mr Steven Bruce, from Warwickshire, paid a return visit to talk about ‘The Hoarder Next Door’. He brought along a hoard of items he has collected, as an auctioneer and valuer, and gave valuations on some of them, as he gave anecdotes about his career, giving advice to would be sellers on how to present items for an auction, and disadvantages if an item may not be as valuable as first thought.

Some items Mr Bruce had brought were passed around the members, and eventually a valuation was given. A very enlightening and entertaining talk.

The vote of thanks was given by Joy Goulden.

The competition winner for ‘something you have kept for a long time’ was Louisa Chapman with her Teddy Bear. Janice Bond won the raffle.

Our Director, Jo Murray and co-director Lorraine Nash are working very hard to produce a fabulous show for you, whilst

trying to control their laughter. Di, our wardrobe expert has already started to create the fabulous costumes you have come to expect every year. Together with Phil, our scenery wizard you will be in a for a treat.

So now it’s time for the cast to get cracking with their lines, develop their characters and treat you all to another hilarious, interactive, fun show. We’ve been told that’s in our job description, hmmmmmmm. Your job is to have fun, clap, boo, hiss, laugh out loud, and generally have a good time. And remember, it will only be a few weeks after the show that the magical ‘Santa Claus’ will be visiting you, so show him how well you can behave.

Our raffle this year will be in aid of LOROS, a very worthy local cause, please help to support them.

Beardsley’s Tea Room As we enter into November we welcome the cooler months along with the start of our festive afternoon tea! Our garden has been fortunate to receive an abundance of sunshine this year and with it lots of our customers have been getting to enjoy their visits with us outside. It sure has been a hot one and we look forward now to the cosier seasons and getting the fire lit.

We remain open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday up until Sunday the 21st of December when we close for our Christmas break.

Our opening times will alter a little in the new year as I myself will be absent for a period of maternity leave, these amendments will be posted on our social pages once confirmed.

I'd like to take this chance to remind you of our off peak deal - £4.25 for any hot drink with either a warm cheese scone and butter, a warm fruit scone and jam (gf or vegan available) or half of a bacon sandwich with chutney. This is available 10am to 11am or 2.30pm to 3.30pm, syrups excluded from drinks.

1st Syston Rangers is the senior section of Girlguiding for girls aged 14 to 18. We meet every Wednesday during term-time from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at Syston Community Centre.

Girlguiding is a girl-led organisation, which means the planning and decision-making is done by girls and for girls.

Here Isla talks about her experience of being a member of 1st Syston Rangers: “I have been a part of Girlguiding since I was around age five. I first joined Rainbows, then Brownies, then Guides and I am now a member of 1st Syston Rangers. In year 9 I took part in the Duke of Edinburgh award through Leicestershire Girlguiding and as part of that I started to volunteer at 1st Syston Rainbows: I am now a Young Leader with their unit.”

Rangers is for girls between the ages of 14 and 18. We try to arrange our own activities, now we are older, with

the help of the leaders. Some of my favourite activities have been science experiments, making mug cakes, sailing and a pamper evening for our mums on Mother's Day. I'm really looking forward to horror movie making in October for Halloween, as well as watching a movie and snacking on cinema sweets.

The very best part of Girlguiding are the holidays! I've been to Topstones (a local Girlguiding holiday home in Leicestershire) and Blackwell Court in Bromsgrove which is a large outdoor activity centre. I've even been to Switzerland and stayed in a chalet near Adelboden. I'm really excited to be taking part, with my unit, in the Monopoly Run Live in London next year.

Being a Ranger makes me feel confident and accepted just as I am. I feel proud to be a part of Girlguiding and had the honour of presenting our poppy wreath on Remembrance Sunday last year on behalf of our unit.
