were amazing. Thank you to the volunteers for a sterling job, to Syston Town Council disposing of a substantial amount of waste and to the Brookside Club who provided water for us. There’s still a lot of silt, stone and vegetation to be removed from there to Broad Street and
and vegetation can all be swept downstream and cause a blockage.
The mass of vegetation dumped by the last flood at Brookfield Avenue is proof of this.

Can you spare a couple of hours a month to help us?
There is a form on our Facebook page that you can complete or email or text us and we’ll add you to our list.

Off The Rails PreLoved Clothing

12th July marked one year since Tracey took a leap of faith and started her business Off The Rails Pre-Loved Clothing.
Tracey said: “To say this is a dream come true is an understatement. I never would have thought that what started out as selling on yard sales outside my house, would grow into renting our first shop on Victoria Street and buying even more rails, hosting live sales, meeting so many new people and taking the rails out in to the community at Slimming World groups and at our charity event for Women's Aid Leicester.”

Fastforward to now and her new shop on Melton Road and she has to pinch myself that this is real. Being in the centre of Syston has meant she has got to see so many more lovely new customers, and she has been blown away by everyone's feedback and support.
When the Stn visited Tracey, a customer came in to tell her how much they loved the outfit they bought for an event and that she felt so lovely wearing it. She went on to say that her daughter then borrowed the outfit for a graduation event, so it was the best £5 she had spent in a long time.
Tracey added that she hadn’t done it all on her own, and she is so grateful for the love, support, and encouragement of her family and friends and the network of people who have helped her along the way.
Of course, the biggest thanks is to you, her lovely followers and customers. She said she wouldn't be where she is now without you, and she is so, so grateful to you all.

2nd Syston Brownies Visit Their Tulip Tree in Recognition
of Their 50th Birthday!

We were very fortunate to be gifted a commemorative tree on Deville Park by Syston Town Council to mark 50 years of 2nd Syston Brownies. We have met every Wednesday during school term time at The Merton School for half a century! The girls really enjoyed visiting their Tulip tree and having their photo with it to
mark the occasion, creating a memory for the history book!
For over 50 years, hundreds of girls
have come through our Pack, joining us on fun adventures. We want this tree to celebrate all present and former Brownies, including those that are all grown up now and have fond memories of being a brownie, whether it be a Harry Potter themed pack holiday, a sleepover at the National Space Centre or a campfire with S’mores at Topstones.
20 years ago, Syston Council also gave us our first tree to celebrate our 30th birthday. This tree now stands strong in Central Park, and we often walk the brownies down to show them on one of our chip shop walks.
Brownies are a part of Girlguiding for girls aged between 7 to 10yrs, we have so much fun completing exciting activities to earn badges, making crafts, playing games, trips out and pack holidays!
We are always welcoming new brownies, and we have spaces for girls to start in September.
If you’d like your daughter to be a part of Brownies please visit www. girlguiding.org.uk and register your daughter now or if you have any questions please contact us at 2ndsystonbrownies@gmail.com

Swim with Jo - Water Safety Assembly
On Monday 16th June the Stn was invited to attend an assembly at St Peter and St Paul’s Academy to watch Tracey, Tammy and Chris (Lifeguard), give a talk to the years three to six about water safety with the help of a video featuring Oscar the otter.
The children watched the video and and then interacted with Tracey as she asked them questions.
Then Tammy with Chris’ help using a whistle the different flags that lifeguards use to communicate different situations.

The children were well engaged and enjoyed participating in this activity which has a serious message on water safety, with what to do and not to do around water as they approached the summer holidays and the increasingly hot weather we are experiencing.
Tracey said they have delivered 45

assemblies to primary schools, nurseries and community groups across Leicestershire (approx 5500 children) during June.
They teach Curriculum School Swimming (approx 350 Children) at nine schools.
They also have their own swimmers, which totals approx 2000 children. So hopefully they have reached approx 8000 children!!!
This is 3000 more than last year!

Green Party Councillors Report
This month has brought a real blow to communities like ours – the government has announced it’s withdrawing funding for Neighbourhood Plans. These plans are essential tools that give towns and villages a proper say over new developments. Syston was about to begin the process of developing its own Neighbourhood Plan, and is now left in limbo. The decision feels completely unjustified and leaves local voices sidelined.
We continue to stand with the residents of St Peter’s Court, where there is still huge uncertainty about the future of their homes. At the latest Charnwood full council meeting, we questioned why residents are being encouraged to apply for alternative housing before any consultation has taken place – especially when we’re told no final decision has been made. People feel let down, and we’ll keep pressing for answers and proper transparency.
Another local issue we’ve been pushing on is the unmanaged land and damaged pavement next to the brook. Years ago there were plans to resurface the path and tidy up the area, but progress stalled when ownership of the land couldn’t be confirmed. We think this has gone on long enough and that someone needs to take responsibility. We’re pushing Charnwood to step up so that the longoverdue improvements can finally be made. We’re hoping for a decision in the next couple of months.
We also recently joined the brilliant team of local flood volunteers working to clear parts of the brook. It was hard, muddy work – but the difference is already visible! We’ll be out helping them again in July clearing more sections, and we’re really grateful to the volunteers for their work and to the town council for dealing with the huge amount of waste that was cleared.
Finally, there’s been fresh controversy at County Hall over the position of the new administration on Leicester’s expansion plans. A recent motion to clearly oppose expansion into the county was not supported by the Reform or Conservative group, which we believe sent a signal to the City Mayor that this remains on the table. Following our challenge on this, both parties now claim how they voted did no such thing. If that is the case, we would question why the Conservative group felt the need to then hold a special meeting to clarify their position – a strong line could have been taken to begin with. We took the opportunity to state our clear opposition the first time around – it’s disappointing to see others being less consistent.
As always, we are happy to hear from residents about any local issues or concerns – please do get in touch via Mob: 0780 739 9879.
Your local Green Councillors & campaigners: Laurie Needham, Chris O’Neill, Sandra Woodward, Andy Haynes, Rebbkka Yates and David Infield.

Tales from the Plot

beetroot which is rather handy because we both love itfreshly boiled, I even like the earthy smell of beetroot being boiled. Don't be afraid to have a succession of sowings as beetroot stands really well into the winter. You can still sow lots of crops in August for harvests into autumn and beyond, this practice is essential if you want your veg patch to supply you with produce throughout the year. If you want fresh new potatoes on the dinner table on Christmas Day now is the last chance to set them, I have learnt this from previous experienceif later than August they will not have time to mature before the cold weather comes back.

August is normally a time of plenty and it’s been a strange wet then dry year so far. I’m actually writing this at the beginning of July - at this time we haven’t had any real rain for two months which I believe has held many plants back. We have spent the last six months setting seeds and planting out then needing to water just to keep them alive. The peas werea bit of a disaster. For the last three years I’ve told myself I won’t bother with peas again, they require so much effort for so little reward, although just walking past them when the pods are beginning to swell and eating them as you walk down the allotment path is a delight. I would miss broad beans which were yet again a great success, all harvested and in the deep freeze. It’s been an alright sort of year for strawberries, again dry weather at the wrong time but we’ve had enough to make some jam and enjoy some fresh with cereals or ice cream, a similar practice is being carried out with the raspberries. Although my raspberries didn’t seem to make any size - I believe mine are old plants and need to be replaced, something I’m planning on doing in the late autumn.
Potatoes, cauliflower, cabbages, french and runner beans, carrots etcare all being harvested as needed - it’s been a particularly good year for
Prepare to lift onions towards the end of the month, wait until the tops begin to fall over as this indicates that the bulb has stopped swelling, dry them before ‘stringing’ and putting into store and these bulbs will then keep until next year.
The apples and pears will soon begin to colour up along with plums and damsons being in full flow so harvest regularly, hopefully the late fruiting raspberries will soon be cropping. Make the last of any outdoor sowings to provide a late harvest for this season, radishes and lettuce will still produce a crop.
The end of this month signals the time to begin summer pruning of your apple and pear trees (those grown as cordons, espaliers or fans, for trees and bushes, leave these until the winter to prune). The purpose of summer pruning is to encourage the development of fruit buds for next summer.
August is definitely the last month to prune stone fruit trees (plum, apricot, cherry and peach), and of course as always keep hoeing those weeds. I find it quite remarkable that it doesn’t matter how much care you give to your vegetable plants the weeds grow faster and more often than not look healthier! I’m sure it’s never been any different.

Another month gone and we’ve been busy as ever at the MADS Group. We are always trying to think of ideas to give our members something new to do and recently we let them have a go at making various animals with coloured air dry clay. This went down a treat and they all looked incredible when they had finished them. It was a lovely simple thing to do after the heatwave at the end of June. We couldn't believe how amazing the end results came out and a few of them felt a huge sense of pride in the finished pieces. If you all remember, an artist from social media called Sophie Tea Art came to Syston and visited Age UK and an article was included in the Stn about the visit. During her visit, We had an item

HEALTHY GUMS = HEALTHY MOUTH!

Why is Interdental (ID) Cleaning Important?
Toothbrushing is essential for healthy gums and teeth, but it only cleans 60% of your teeth. The other 40% is inaccessible with a toothbrush, so you need to use tools to clean between the teeth in addition to your toothbrush. ID cleaning addresses the areas between your teeth and along the gumline, where a toothbrush cannot reach effectively. By removing plaque and food particles from these spaces, you help prevent the onset and progression of gum disease, ensuring your gums remain healthy and your smile intact.
The Importance of ID Cleaning on Gum Disease
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common condition caused by plaque buildup, which irritates and inflames the gums. ID cleaning is an essential way to prevent and treat gum disease. If left untreated, it can progress to more severe stages, leading to gum recession, tooth loss, and potential health complications. Effective plaque control is a basic tool for successful prevention as brushing isn’t enough as it doesn’t

Throughout the year we have ‘one off’ events arranged by members. On Thursday 19th June James Gunn took us on a fascinating walk through Leicester’s Cultural Quarter and this was a perfect opportunity to see my heritage and familiarise myself with the City’s manufacturing wealth and the beautiful architecture we can still see today.
We met close to Rutland Street and in sight of what was the ‘Odeon’ cinema built in in 1938.

Despite being modernised to create three screens in the 1970’s, it closed in 1997 but reopened as ‘Athena’ and remains a wonderful example of Art Deco design. The iconic and much heralded Curve Theatre close by was finished in 2008 and cost (in the end) £61 million, has no traditional backstage area, audience seating of 969 in main theatre and a structure comprised of steel and glass.
Remember buying Cherub brand for your children’s socks, underwear and

night clothes? Beginning with a £300 loan, Arthur Foister Limited began in 1903. With business success they moved premises several times from Morledge Street ending in the impressive building whose frontage is on Charles Street and formerly owned by Kendall the umbrella and rainwear manufacturer. Sadly Cherub brand ceased to exist in 1990’s.

We have lots of street murals around Leicester and one by Smug (Sam Bates) made a particular impression due to it’s scale and detailed design and created freehand using aerosol paints in 2017. Another street mural which is eye catching is of a Magpie, bobbin, button and needle representing Leicester’s garment industry. There are more beautiful examples to look at around the Cultural Quarter and street information boards enable you to see buildings of interest for yourself.
A must to mention is Leicestershire ‘Butchers hide, skin and fat company’ whose sign above the entrance remains. One assumes this may have been a tannery supplying Leicester’s prodigious boot and shoe industry. One can imagine the smell especially in summer.

We saw St Georges Church designed by William Parsons and completed in 1827 costing £16,000. In 1911 the spire and most of the Church was destroyed by fire which started behind at R. Rowley & Co Ltd hosiery manufacturer. The Church was rebuilt during 1912-13 and is a Grade 2* listed building.

Loughborough Crematorium
Celebrates 65 years with major refurbishments, new facilities, and community celebration
Loughborough Crematorium is marking its 65th anniversary this year with a host of community focused enhancements, including a new flower stall, a coffee cabin, and a full chapel refurbishment, all designed with local voices at the heart of the process.
As part of this milestone year, the crematorium has welcomed a local florist and an independent coffee provider to the grounds. These additions were not made for commercial reasons, but in direct response to requests from visitors looking for comfort and convenience during their time on site. The new flower stall offers fresh flowers, while the coffee cabin provides quality refreshments in a peaceful setting.
In addition, a significant chapel refurbishment is underway, beginning this July and set for completion in August. The renovation has been codesigned with 18 local funeral directors to ensure the updated space reflects the values and needs of the local community. The newly refurbished chapel will provide a more welcoming, respectful, and calming environment for families and visitors.
To celebrate the completion of the works and the crematorium’s 65th birthday, a special Open Day will be held on 30th

Please
August 2025. The event will include guided tours, meet-and-greets with the onsite team and industry experts with local Funeral Directors and their fleet and refreshments. It will also be an opportunity for the public to see the transformed facilities firsthand.
Loughborough Crematorium, which is part of The Crematorium and Memorial Group (CMG), operated by Dignity Funeral Services, has also recently been nominated for the prestigious Best Crematorium of the Year award, a testament to its commitment to high standards and compassionate service.
Jonathan Brooking, Business Leader at Loughborough Crematorium, said: “This is more than just a refurbishment or a celebration. It’s about listening to the people who use this space, respecting their needs, and creating an environment that feels truly supportive. We’re incredibly proud of what we’re building here together, as a community.”

Syston Resident Running 10k Every Day In August for MIND

George Greenhill is a Syston resident and over the month of August he is running at least 10k every day to raise money for the mental health charity, Mind. He has set himself a rather ambitious goal of £2500, but he has said if he reaches that goal he will make his final run from his house to the Nottingham Forest football stadium (over 20 miles away) before they play on 31st August. If he reaches £5000 he will run from the Tigers stadium to the Nottingham Forest one.

Syston’s Only Dedicated Newspaper
Syston Hearing Clinic
Thriving – Smiles,
Tears
and Pasta
Optimal Hearing, a specialist hearing clinic in the heart of Syston, opened its doors on 4th December 2024. With nearly eight months now under our belt, it's a great time to reflect on how far we’ve come.
Helping in Numbers
Our mission is simple: to help people hear as well as possible. That means detailed hearing assessments, expert wax removal, and highly personalised hearing solutions.
To date, we’ve fitted 104 hearing aids. About half of those were for people already wearing hearing aids—either NHS or private—but looking for something better. The other half were completely new to hearing support. We've worked with a wide range of styles, technologies, sizes, and even colours. But all have one thing in common: they’re tailored precisely to the person wearing them.
On the wax front, we’ve helped around 170 patients—some with mild blockages causing tinnitus or irritation, others with long-standing impactions. We've also retrieved a few foreign objects from ears, including bits of earphones, mystery plastics, and most memorably… a piece of dried pasta.
Tissues at the Ready Improving hearing can be deeply
emotional—for the patient and their family. It’s often relatives who tear up when someone starts hearing properly again. A few special moments stand out:
A lady who video-called her daughter in Canada every day but couldn’t hold a proper conversation with her old aids. At her fitting, we surprised her daughter with a FaceTime call—and they chatted clearly for the first time in years.
A gentleman with profound hearing loss who hadn’t responded to his name in ages. When his daughter called him at his fitting, he turned his head immediately. Tears followed.
A woman in her 30s whose life had become increasingly stressful due to untreated hearing loss. After a long NHS wait, we fitted her with custom hearing aids in January. She now wears them with pride and can relax and communicate with ease.
Complex Cases Welcome
We’ve been surprised by how many complex cases have come through our doors—issues not just caused by ageing but by infections, surgery, longterm ear conditions, or trauma. Many believed they’d never hear from one ear again. Helping these patients has been particularly rewarding, and our clinic is well-suited to managing such challenges.
Travelling for Care
While we’re based in Syston, people have travelled from all over— Leicestershire, Norfolk, even as far as
Bali and Australia. Because of our broad expertise, we’re able to support almost any type of hearing aid, including those fitted abroad.
The Team’s View
Clinic Support Technician Dee shared: "The whole experience has been brilliant, but my favourite part is the variety. Every set of hearing aids is different, and it’s fascinating to see how they’re tailored. I love carrying out onsite services to improve hearing aid performance and helping fit people into our schedule when they need us."
Syston: A Perfect Fit
Syston has proven to be the ideal location. It’s a welcoming town with fantastic amenities and a strong community spirit. Many patients have expressed how grateful they are to have this service on their doorstep—and we’re just as grateful for their support and word-of-mouth recommendations. With nearly 300 patients seen already, it feels like we’ve really started something special. Every walk through town now comes with a friendly wave or hello from someone we’ve helped.

Jeanne Douglas offers psychic readings in Palmistry, Tarot, Crystal and Personal Astrology. Her telephone numbers are 01664 562 471 or 07931 293 855.
ARIES March 21 - April 19
This is a good time to manifest your ideas, and even dreams, when it comes to practical tasks and efforts will go surprisingly well. Some old concern reemerges and you have to reassure yourself yet again that everything will run smoothly. Family matters are upbeat with planned social events and finances absolutely booming.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
Life calms down significantly and your attention starts to turn to your finances and particularly ‘how to secure them further’? In fact, you should be able to discover some amazing new approaches that will work wonders, so take the risk as you’ll do well. An admirer at work helps you to reach out for an amazing opportunity.
GEMINI May 21 - June 21
A romantic partner comes up with a great business idea which promises much hope for success! So your finances are set for increase and foretell better times are ahead. You have to communicate at work and during any daily routines a little more, in order to make yourself understood. You work hard at practical DIY tasks at home.
CANCER
June 22 - July 22
Romantic issues are foremost in your thoughts as events take an interesting turn. Invites to social and business events seem to favour brushes with love and set the tone for future plans. You’ll enjoy discussing your financial situation with others and working out the next strategic moves. You raise your voice more than usual to be heard.
LEO July 23 - August 22
You apply reason to practical problems with outstanding results but may have to explain your actions all the time, which is exhausting! You have to spend money on a new idea before it has a chance of taking off yet this is something that you’re prepared to do. There’s a lot on your mind but this is a good time to plan ahead realistically.
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 21
You can’t help but feel feisty about one thing or another and this is most unusual for you! Still, it’s best to get things off your chest before you move on. As issues start to calm down, you invest your well-earned cash into some career venture such as future study or research resources.
LIBRA Sept 22 - Oct 22
You’re determined to get your own way for a change and this is sometimes fun and also a bit risky! Those close to you are much more practical and yet still want to find out if dreams can be turned into reality. Yes, anything is possible if people are prepared to hard work. A romantic admirer at work helps you get ahead.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21
You start to work things out and understand just what has been going on at a deeper level. This gives you a strong edge in life but you’ve had to take some time out for yourself in order to do so. You get lucky at work when you find it easy to manifest a dream, whether a new job or a promotion! Seems you’re impressive.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21
You’re in a powerful position both at home and at work where you’re able to show others ‘the way’ and how to go about things. As respect for you and your popularity grow enormously, expect to be offered some kind of community role and have to speak for others – and even make decisions. You’re going up in the world.
CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19
A romantic partner plans wonderful adventures such as short vacations and business trips which you’ll enjoy together! You discuss issues with close friends and then receive strong practical advice, so this is well worth doing. You get a little ‘hot under the collar’ as regards certain issues on your mind. Just give it time.
AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18
You have to think really deeply about current practical issues and events before you can make progress. It’s time to push ahead with ideas at work and so make those necessary changes just because it’s easier right now. You still fear that a current situation will collapse around you and be disastrous. Have quiet faith.
PISCES Feb 19 - March 20
Others are acting strongly where you’re concerned and sometimes seem a bit angry. But rest assured that their actions are short-term and that they are more frustrated with themselves. Meanwhile, you’re perceived as being stable and reliable and others will look to you for reassurance and to point the way ahead. Hurrah!

that Ree while out helping people received a call from a family member to say her own home was being flooded and so she had to go and sort her own home out.
He said that these volunteers showed a significant contribution to the community during those times, so the group felt they deserved to be recognised for putting service before self.

On Friday 27th of June 2025, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE took part in an open water swim alongside Richard Spence, CEO of the Carpenters Arms, at Six Hills Melton Mowbray
The Carpenters arms is a charity which focuses on rehabilitating Men battling addiction across its numerous locations, one of which is also based at Six Hills.
The company supports its members as they readjust back to day-to-day life after a struggle with addiction. Furthermore, with support of external companies, the carpenters' arms helps its members with reemployment and housing. The charity is also one of the two charities chosen by the current Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr David Northage, to be his charity of the year meaning any funds raised during his year in office will be donated to the Carpenters' Arms.
During Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw's time in office as Mayor of Charnwood she built a close relationship with the Carpenter's Arms.

the positive attitude needed during the recovery from addictions, as well as the benefits of physical activity which can help recovery.
For example, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw revealed her own experiences with how sports and physical activity helped her feel a sense of belonging within the community, and how she believes that sports can help those battling addiction once again find their place within the community.
Moreover, Dr Julie Bradshaw discussed how setting positive, realistic and achievable goals largely benefitted her in terms of achieving things within open water swimming, and how this is also applicable to people facing addiction.
Finally, the Q&A looked at how sports can be a huge benefit for many in the process of recovery, due to positive mindset which must be upheld, but also the release of endorphins that provides your body with a natural high.

New Barkby W.I
Vice-President, Jean Brutnall, welcomes members of New Barkby W.I to the institute’s July meeting.

After a period of time dealing with business matters, the speaker for the evening was Bill Haley. ‘My life on board the royal yacht, Britannia.’ Members were able to see all the different areas of the vessel (which is actually a ship, not a yacht, although referred to as a yacht), via powerpoint presentation. Bill had served in the Royal Navy for 27 years and was privileged to have been chosen to be part of the crew attending the British Royal Family.
The yacht was used for ceremonial occasions and for Royal honeymoons and entertained by the royal marines

band. It was commissioned in 1954 and covered approximately half a million sea miles during voyages around the world. It was finally decommissioned in 1997 and Queen Elizabeth II was piped ashore at 3.01pm, on the last day.
The yacht is now moored at the port of Leith, Edinburgh, ocean terminal. A fascinating insight into the whole part of the yacht, during its service. Vote of thanks was given by Angela Montague.
The competition for a Memento of the Sea was won by Valerie Cobb with a necklace made from shells.
The raffle prize winner was Cilla Lane.
The next meeting is on Wednesday 6th August at Syston Community Centre at 07.30pm. ‘Balloon Modelling’ with John Parnell. Visitors are welcome to attend.

Christmas Tree Festival
Future date to be noted 28th November to 1st December Christmas Tree Festival.

John Leonard led his final service at St Peter and St Paul’s as he celebrated 60 years of ordained ministry. John and his beloved wife Jane, who passed away last year, have been a part of the church community for many years since moving to Syston. Many will know them from the 11:30 family service that they ran together. We are so grateful to them for their many years of ministry in Syston. Friends and family from far and wide came to celebrate. After the service there were further celebrations with refreshments and a very special cake. Patronal Festival
On Sunday 29th June we celebrated the feast day of St Peter and St Paul, our Patronal Festival. We were joined by friends from other local churches
including Thurmaston, East Goscote, Queniborough and Rearsby. It was wonderful to see the church so full of people and to have the opportunity to worship and pray together. Afterwards refreshments and cake were served in the church hall.
Skipathon
We would like to say a huge thank you to the pupils from St Peter and St Paul’s CE Academy who held a Skipathon in aid of the heating appeal. It was a very hot day but they were undeterred and raised over £300. We are hoping to begin work to install the new heating in the Autumn. Cream Teas
On Saturday 12th July we held the first cream tea of the season. Despite the baking hot weather it was a huge success with many people coming to enjoy the cool of the church! Fantastic entertainment was provided by RJ Vocal Group who sang hits from Queen, Pink and Madonna with great enthusiasm.
The next cream tea dates are:
Saturday 16th August 2pm to 4pm: U3A Choir and VJ Day Anniversary Exhibition
Saturday 13th September 2pm to 4pm: Ride and Stride
All proceeds from these events will go towards building our heating appeal

Hats at Birstall Gala
Hello from HATS. What a fabulous heatwave we are having, enjoy it but make sure you stay hydrated.

The sun shone down in full force at the Birstall Gala on June 21st, with a sprinkling of rain in the afternoon.
We had a fabulous time talking to lots of local people and some from further afield. As usual we took along our wonderful ‘Seaside cut out boards’.
These are always very popular not just with the children but with teenagers, parents and grandparents. It was so lovely to see people having such a good time, including the local Reverend Amanda
Digman who also had her photo taken.
We had free erasers to give to the children too. In addition, we had a raffle to win family tickets for our next Panto, The Emperor’s New Clothes by PL McQueen with permission from Lazy Bee Scripts. Put the dates in your diary, December 4th, 5th and 6th in the evening, with an additional matinee on the 6th. The two winners have been chosen and informed. Well done to Julie Palmer and Ben Drake.

All money raised from the raffle, a huge £70, will be donated to Loros. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets.
Keep watching out for further information about our panto and check out our face book. www.facebook.com/hatsamddram
See you soon.
Advertise Your Business in Our Award Winning Newspaper

Our station adoption group have been very busy with planting up the displays on the railway station recently and we would like to thank our sponsors for helping with the cost of the plants and compost.
Donations from Syston Town Council, Syston Town News, D.R.Electrical, Midland Railway Hotel, Wreake Valley Rotary Club and Optimal Hearing have enabled us to obtain a lovely range of summer plants. Sporting Capers have provided the plaques, and Green Stripe Media have kindly maintained our website.

We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Syston Town Council and all of these businesses; without you we could not provide such lovely displays, which we feel give a welcome to all passengers, residents and visitors to our lovely town.
If you’re out for a walk why not drop by for a look. We rely entirely on our sponsors for funding of plants and

compost.
If your company are interested in sponsoring a planter please get in touch by phone or email, we will supply a plaque in recognition of your support.

Highcliffe Highlights
Highcliffe School Choir, Birstall, recently excelled in a concert at Stoneygate Baptist Church.

The choir has been reformed by visiting music teacher, Jo Boddison and the audience was entertained with songs about Henry VIII and his six wives (Chop and Change), about the Romans (What Have they done for Us?) and Good Looking Guys, a song from Blastoff, all about aliens. Even with an earlier rehearsal before the event, the children behaved impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, singing in the lovely Stoneygate acoustic.
The concert concluded with a performance of Andrew Carter’s Benedicite. With inspiration from the
Book of Common Prayer about praising the Lord, the pupils sang about all kinds of animals blessing the Lord. This included badgers, hedgehogs, dromedaries, dragonflies, weasels and warthogs.
Their final section was asking fathers and mothers, grannies and grandads, brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, uncles and aunts and all kith and kin to also bless the Lord.
Highcliffe were joined in the Benedicite by Leicester Choir, Cantamici, who sang about green things, sun and moon, thunder and lightning, whales and waters. The capacity audience were very supportive and appreciative.
Cantamici organised this community event, having previously arranged a joint concert with Highcliffe as long

ago as 2014. Cantamici also performed a mix of pieces which included O For the Wings of a Dove with soloist Ellie Stell. Songs from Indonesia and Canada also featured in the programme.
Tremendous thanks are due to Ms Stewart, the head of Highcliffe, for her blessing, to the parents and families of the pupils for their support and appreciation. Also, thanks to Jo Boddison for her work and enthusiasm in encouraging the pupils. But tremendous thanks to all the pupils themselves for singing so well in this combined event. www.cantamicichoir.org.uk

Warns against parcel scams and suggests ways of avoiding them. I got a text asking me to click on a link to reschedule a parcel delivery I’d missed. I was waiting for a parcel from Royal Mail at the time, so I clicked on the link and was asked to make a payment. Luckily, my daughter told me the text is a scam and to ignore it, but I almost gave away my personal details. How can I spot the signs of this type of scam myself in the future?
Parcel delivery scams are becoming increasingly common. Ones involving texts and emails are known as phishing scams. They aim to trick you into giving away your personal information and financial details so your bank account and money can be accessed. One way scammers do this is by enticing people to click on links, which can lead to fake websites in the hope that this information will be entered. While scammers can pretend to be from any parcel delivery company, many of them choose Royal Mail because it’s the largest delivery company in the UK. This means the chances of scammers contacting someone who receives parcels from Royal Mail is higher. These scams can be in the form of a text, like yours was, or an email or phone call. There are also reports of fake ‘Something for You’ cards, which Royal Mail leave when a delivery is attempted but no-one is home.
Here are some tips on how you can stay vigilant and spot the signs of a parcel delivery scam, and other scam messages:
● If you’re waiting for a parcel, and get a message that asks you to pay to get it, or reschedule the delivery, it’s usually a scam.
● Don’t click any links or attachments in the text or email. Delivery companies won’t ask you to pay them through a link in an email or text.
● Parcel delivery scammers often pretend to be from an organisation like Royal Mail. They can try to make you click on a fake version of the company’s genuine website which asks for personal information or login details - these can appear real.
● To check if a link is genuine, hover your mouse over the link without clicking on it, or press and hold on the link on a mobile device. You should be able to see the address the link goes to, and check it’s the same as the company’s official website address.
● Make sure you check the address carefully - fake link addresses can look similar to the genuine address.
● Other signs of a message that is a scam include bad spelling and grammar and when it starts with a general greeting instead of your name. But scam messages can sometimes be sophisticated - so don’t rely on obvious mistakes only.
● If you get an email, check if the email address matches the sender’s name or organisation - you might have to click on their name to see the email address.
● If there’s something you’re unsure about, don’t feel pressured to act. You can find the official details for the company the person who has contacted you says they’re from, and ask the company if they’ve contacted you.
Royal Mail has a helpful page on its website of examples of delivery scamsincluding text messages and emails people have received - https://www. royalmail.com/help/scam-protection You can check if you think something you’ve seen online, or in a text or email you’ve received, might be a scamhttps://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ consumer/scams/check-if-somethingmight-be-a-scam/ . If you have been scammed you can report it on the Citizens Advice website – https://www. citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/ reporting-a-scam/
- including protecting yourself from further risks.
Being targeted by a scammer or falling victim to a scam can make people feel anxious or embarrassed, but it’s important to remember scammers are clever and scams can happen to anyone. Reporting them helps track down and stop scammers, and prevent other people from ending up in the same situation.
