St Peter’s Court Syston Under Threat

Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) have put forward a proposal to sell off the 14 courts to a housing association due to refurbishment costs, St Peter’s Court is one of these. Understandably it has caused significant concern among the residents.

The Stn met with Cllr Laurie Needham and some of the residents currently at St Peter’s Court to find out how they feel and the look around the Sheltered Housing complex in the centre of Syston.

St Peter’s Court is a well appointed court with eight, one bedroomed flats and 26 single rooms, which the council refer to as bedsits with shared bathing, but having visited them, I would not describe them as such, because each room has a separate kitchen plus a toilet with wash hand basin. A large living space

and a bedroom area which can be separated from the living space with either curtains or as one resident has done with a screen. The only thing not in the room is a shower/bath room, these are located in the corridors close by to the rooms. The residents do not find this a problem as they said, they have never had to queue to use the shower or bath and they leave it as they find it, plus they have a cleaner who keeps them immaculately clean. There is also a Laundry room, all this is set in a beautiful garden with mature trees a greenhouse where the residents grow their own food, all of which promotes wellbeing for the residents and helps combat loneliness and isolation. See our pictures on page 2.

The residents received a letter saying their Court was ‘not fit for purpose’ which has understandably upset them and they fear if the proposal goes ahead, they will be sent all over the county should the CBC decide to sell off their home. As that is what the Court is to the residents, who aged between 70 and 90, some of whom have lived there for over 15 years and are happy there. They all know each other, they have weekly coffee mornings, quiz nights and even go out for meals together.

They are very upset that the CBC hadn’t initially been out to speak with

them, since Cllr Needham got involved the chief housing officer Peter Oliver has now been out and met the residents.

Cllr Needham has also written to the Chief Executive, the director of housing and the leader of the council on behalf of the residents and has been told that no final decision has been made yet. The leader of the council has also said he will visit St Peter’s Court with Cllr Laurie Needham soon.

There are some sheltered housing courts owned by CBC which are unfit, one bring Fielding court in Loughborough, and the council are going to use it as a test case to see if it works.

However, the residents at St Peter’s Court believe that the council are not marketing the court in a positive way by calling them bedsits with shared bathing, without images to show possible residents what it is really like or arranging for eligible prospective tenants on the housing register to visit and meet current residents and view the available rooms. It is a very close community and the residents are happy living there. The residents don’t believe it would cost a great deal to refurbish St Peter’s Court as it is sound and decorated to a good standard now, it is bright a homely Court.

Continues on page 2

Our Picture shows: Cllr Laurie Needham with some of the residents.

Residents have to decorate their own rooms, the council give them a £50 voucher. Being elderly and some having disabilities makes it difficult for them to decorate themselves. There is also nowhere to put furniture while decorating, so it would be better if the rooms were decorated before new tenants moved in and it would make it more desirable to new tenants.

One benefit to the court would be the inclusion of a lift, there is space for one in the one of the stairwells. This would enable wheelchair users to have a room on the first floor. That would then help fill the empty rooms.

The other refurbishment needed is to some of the shower/bathrooms and the kitchenettes.

Another suggestion from the residents was to offer tenants in other courts across the Borough the opportunity to relocate to St Peter’s Court, as decommissioning takes place. This would support the goal of maintaining occupancy, reduce the empty rooms and preserve the strong community here.

Another great thing about St Peter’s Court is that it helps prevent loneliness, as there is a communal lounge which is very welcoming and residents can sit and chat with others rather than being on their own.

The location is also excellent as the health centre is across the road, the residents can get into the town centre as it’s not too far away. They feel they are in the heart of the town and love it for that reason.

Relaxed Atmosphere: No appointments, no pressure — just a calm, comfortable setting with tea, coffee, and conversation.

Resource Sharing: Learn about local mental health services, support groups, and tools for self-care and recovery.

We want Syston residents to know of these proposals now as there should be a public consultation in the near future and we feel this Sheltered Housing Court is a great asset to the community of Syston and that it needs future proofing for local residents who need this type of accommodation as we age we can’t always do the things we used to, but still want some independence and that is what these Courts provide, somewhere to live in later life that is comfortable, easy to access, has other people there to stop loneliness and also releases housing for younger people or families. It’s a benefit to society and people of all ages should have choice. They are small communities within the wider community.

So, we hope that by raising awareness of this, we as a community can help support these residents keep their homes and prevent the loss of St Peter’s Court in Syston.

We will keep you informed in future issues as to how things progress.

Why It Matters:

Mental health is everyone’s business. The café helps reduce isolation, promote early intervention, and build a sense of community resilience — one conversation at a time”

Testimonial from attendee : “The cafe was recommendedto me through my mental health facilitator, I was in danger of becoming a recluse due to trauma and depression. Extremely nervous regarding this recommendation. My first visit was definitely memorable, the volunteers were lovely yet I still burst into tears, Tracey was already in a one to one however a wonderful volunteer calmed me with conversation and coffee, compassion and a little laughter. That day I had my first one to one with a staff member and it was my first breakthrough in a long time. Due to the support of staff and volunteers at this facility I have built up relationships I once thought lost, found some self-worth and forged new friendships.

Personally, I do not regret that first visit as hard as it was and am truly grateful to the staff for the work and compassion they put in to making every

WW2 Veteran Celebrates 100th Birthday

The Stn had the great pleasure to be invited to celebrate Ron’s 100th birthday at Forge Court on Thursday 15th May.

Ron a veteran of WW2 has lived at Forge Court since it was built back in 2002, before that he lived in Frisby. His daughter Christine invited us along to mark the occasion and take some photographs.

You can see above Ron with his card from His Majesty the King and her

Majesty the Queen.

He also received a lovely handwritten card from the Chairman of John Lewis where he once worked.

Ron began is life on a farm in a rural community and at the age of 18 he left his reserved occupation where he was making fuel tanks for the war effort to join the army, having lived through the first five years of bombings. He was 20 years old on VE Day 1945.

He met his wife while in the army as she was an army driver and they met at the fuel depot where they got chatting and the rest as they say is history. His wife passed away about 14 years ago, so he has his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren celebrating with him today as well as residents at Forge Court.

We have met Ron before and included him in the newspaper as he was a keen gardener and enjoyed creating marquetry pictures, some of which hang in Forge Court. We featured him when Forge Court won the best community gardens in Syston in Bloom and also some of his beautiful pieces of marquetry.

Happy 100th Birthday Ron, from all of us here at the Stn

Disaster seems to have struck with the parsnips once again. I’m close to giving up on parsnips - from a fresh packet of seed purchased from Kings this year I put 2/3 of the packet in just a 15 foot row (well, well over-seeded) and to date it appears not one has shown its head. My thinking was I’ll put loads of seed in and thin out leaving about 20 in the row which is as much as I want. 15 years ago I would buy a cheap packet of seeds from Wilkos throw them in willy-nilly and 75% would come through. I don’t know what’s happened, I’ve told myself now if just one parsnip grows I’m leaving it in to go to seed to save for the following year.It has to be a seed issue … or is it? Others seem to make it work, it just seems ridiculous. Leeks are not doing so well.I started them at home in trays, they grew well at first then just seem to turn yellow and keel over, I think this is because we are forced into peat free compost that quite frankly does not work for me. We are now into June and it’s too late to set more leeks so I’ll be on the scrounge from other plot holders that hopefully have a surplus.

So here we are 50% into the tales from the plot and all I’ve talked about is disasters. This just goes to show you that having an allotment isn’t just all parading up and down with prize vegetables and blowing one’s own trumpet.

On a brighter note, potatoes, onions, French beans, runner beans, beetroot,

cabbages, cauliflowers and sweetcorn all seem to be doing very well. I think I said in the past that sweetcorn is a must to grow, see image left. I like to have at least 30 plants. I set them in trays covered in clingfilm for the first week then uncover them - I normally get 90% germination doing it this way, and grow them on till they’re about 12 inches high. Timing is crucial as they need to go out when the frosts are finished. Plant the sweetcorn in a block rather than a row, about 18 inches apart. I normally mulch mine with leaves. then just leave them to get on with it. I grow a variety called Incredible F1 - and they are. Theyall mature together so are harvested in one go, prepared and frozen within an hour

This is important as sweetcorn starts to lose its sugar from the moment it is harvested. If you follow this procedure you will have the most wonderful tasting sweetcorn you have ever tasted throughout the year: do not thaw out just place straight out of the freezer into boiling water, allow the water to get back up to boiling point, and leave in for 15 minutes. I like mine smothered in butter, we often have them as a starter if someone comes round for dinner, bloody marvellous! It’s now time to start thinking about crops that will get us through the winter. I try to make it that I can harvest something throughout the year for my dinner. I’ve never quite managed it but I’m getting pretty close. Sprouting broc needs to go in along with Savoy cabbages, but I grew some January King cabbages last year and they lasted and stood very well along with just a few red cabbage. Brussels are already in, swedes if you with can grow them, but I don’t think our soil is very swede friendly LOL. Russian kale I particularly like although Jane is not keen which is a shame as itcan be harvested right through the winter. Carrots can be harvested as needed provided you can keep the dreaded the carrot fly away: there’s still plenty to do! Grizz 15b Syston Allotments

Syston Branch Laying of the Standards and Legion d’Honour

On Sunday 4th May, the Syston branch of the Royal British Legion joined members of the St Peter and St Paul church service to lay a couple standards in the church.

It was lovely to be apart of this event and witness the standards being processed through the church to be

laid on the alter at the front of the church, as shown in the photograph plus the group of veterans.

In the afternoon, the family and friends of Sid Willcocks gathered in the Malt house Club, High Street, Syston to witness him being presented with a Legion d'honour, by Lt col (retired) Bryon Brotherton MBE ex Royal Scot’s Dragoon guards, see our picture below.

The Legion d’honour is highest honour awarded by France to military personnel and civilians for their bravery in service.

It was an honour to be invited to this event and see Sid Willcocks presented with his medal.

Sid celebrated his 101st birthday on Tuesday 6th May. SKB put a tribute out in Sileby for his birthday.

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery

Hello everybody, summer is here. It’s beautiful at our wonderful cemetery, so peaceful, and listening to the bird song is lovely as well. The weather has been great. Why not spend longer there just sitting on a bench, talking to your loved ones? The downside of this is that the fresh flowers are now only lasting for two or three days, keeping us very busy, when we do our dead flower trawls. Christmas wreaths have now been removed but there are still a lot of Christmas decorations hanging from trees and headstones we have noticed.

A great big shout of thanks to Syston Knitting Banksy, for your wonderful tribute, to assist me with the VE 80 display in the chapel. The next display is our Father’s Day Display and following that a summer theme.

We are being assessed again this year for the Green Flag award so if you could please help us Continues on page 8

Your Smile?

Professional teeth

whitening is a safe and effecve cosmec dental procedure that removes stains and discolouraon from your teeth, revealing a brighter, whiter smile. Unlike over-the-counter whitening products, professional treatments use a higher concentraon of bleaching agents to achieve more dramac and long-lasng results. We offer a variety of whitening opons to suit your individual needs and preferences.

At-Home Whitening allows you to whiten your teeth at home. We provide bespoke whitening trays that perfectly fit your teeth. The Denst supplies a professional-grade whitening gel. You wear these trays for a designated period daily, gradually achieving a whiter smile.

How Whitening Works

Whitening breaks down stain molecules. Teeth can become discoloured over me due to various factors like consuming pigmented foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine), smoking or simply the natural ageing process. These substances leave behind ny parcles that become embedded within the enamel (outer layer) and denn (inner layer) of your teeth.

Professional treatments ulise bleaching agents, most commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These agents work by gently penetrang the tooth enamel and denn. Once inside, the peroxide breaks down the stain molecules into smaller, colourless components. These smaller parcles are then easily removed through saliva, revealing a brighter, whiter tooth surface.

Please note that whitening doesn’t lighten exisng dental work like

crowns or fillings, so you may need to discuss touch-ups with your denst if you have restoraons in your smile line.

Teeth Whitening for Sensive Teeth

If you have sensive teeth, whitening can sll be an opon for you. Many people with sensive teeth can achieve a brighter smile with careful consideraon. We understand your concerns and offer whitening opons specifically for sensive teeth. These treatments oen contain lower concentraons of bleaching agents and incorporate desensising ingredients to minimise discomfort. While the treatment for sensive teeth can be effecve, it may take longer to achieve your desired results compared to standard treatments. Addionally, you might experience temporary increased sensivity following the whitening process.

Our aim is to discuss your individual needs and recommend a tailored whitening approach to minimise discomfort while helping achieve your desired result.

The first award (pictured below left) was the ‘Suburban Pub of the Year 2025’ which was absolutely wonderful but then the amazing part was the second award.

The second award (pictured below right) was the ‘Overall Pub of the Year 2025’ which means that Dave and his team had beat The Blue Boar and The Kings Head to this Overall award. What an Achievement!

The Pharmacie Arms will go on to the next round in which they will compete against other Leicestershire and Rutland branches for the area title after winning the Overall Pub of the Year in Leicester.

Holy Week and Easter

In preparation for Easter, Holy Week is very special.

Services following the Stations of the Cross began the week.

On Maundy Thursday a special service, at St Hilda’s East Goscote, was held to recall The Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples, including the washing of the feet, the institution of the Holy Communion and the Garden of Gethsemane.

On Good Friday at noon Churches

Together in Syston made a Walk of Witness starting at the Community Centre. The walk followed a route around the town centre pausing in various places to pray and sing. Afterwards hot cross buns were enjoyed at the Methodist Church.

In the evening there was a time of quiet reflection with a service of Compline and Tenebrae.

Then, at last, we were able to rejoice on Easter Day morning with the lighting of the new fire to celebrate Jesus, the Light of the World.

And sing with great joy, Jesus Christ is risen today, Allelujah!

Evensong with Leicester Cathedral

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you, as the Stn is the voice of the people, and I want the residents to know what our town council has done, as not everyone is on Facebook..

I saw on facebook, that Syston Town Council held a private lighting of a beacon on VE Day, Thursday 8th May.

How dare they be so disrespectful to the residents whose relatives served and some died in the Second World War.

This event in other towns and villages was open to the public. I believe the beacon used was purchased by the council last year for DD and was lit on Central Park. Why did this not happen this year?

We as tax payers paid for that beacon and yet they chose to light it in the car park behind the community centre under the pretext that it was because of health and safety!

I would suggest that it was more dangerous to light it in the car park than on the Central Park where all residents could have been a part of the lighting and be able to pay their own respects to those who gave us are freedom today.

If you are going to do something, do it properly or don’t do at all! Doing it in secret is totally disrespectful to the residents of Syston.

Resident’s name and address Supplied.

President, Shirley Franklin, welcomed New Barkby W.I. members to the institute’s May meeting.

After ‘Jerusalem’ was sung, followed by business matters, the main part of the evening was the ‘Resolution’ to be debated at the national Federation of W.I.s at their Annual meeting, in June. Dawn Haynes, committee member, recently attended a briefing meeting for members to discuss, that, ‘Bystanders can be lifesavers.’

The campaign is for more defibrillators to be available in as many areas as possible, both locally and nationally.

Approximately, 30,000 cardiac arrests occur each year (not in hospital) and survival rates are less than one in ten cases. Even a heart attack may become a cardiac arrest. So, if early cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and fibrillation is applied, someone in need of this may receive urgent care, as soon as possible. The W.I. hopes to collaborate with organisations that offer CPR training, to offer the best chance of survival with appropriate use of treatment.

Shirley Franklin thanked Dawn for the discussion. Members voted ‘for’ the resolution.

There was a short social time, afterwards, when members enjoyed bring - and - share food, including a cake, decorated for VE Day, made by Joy Goulden, a committee member. There was no competition this month. The raffle was won by Valeria Cobb.

The next meeting with be on Wednesday 4th June, with a ‘Bits and Bobs’ Quiz with Bob Neill. Syston Community Centre, 7.30pm. Visitors are always welcome.

Does Hearing Loss Really Cause Dementia?

Dementia Awareness week is an annual campaign organised by the Alzheimer's Society to raise awareness about dementia and encourage action on the issue. This year's campaign ran from 19th to 25th May, with focus on dementia diagnosis and the importance of early detection.

For many years there have been reports across media outlets and in some advertising about the ‘link’ between cognitive decline and untreated hearing loss, citing research studies and often appearing highly credible and science based. These reports often give the impression that untreated hearing loss directly causes or contributes towards cognitive decline, and that hearing aids can therefore help to prevent onset.

Direct quotes from examples include: “Hearing loss is to blame for a third of dementia cases in older people” or “Hearing aids have been shown to reduce the risk of dementia to the level of a person with normal hearing”. These reports are certainly attention grabbing and appear to offer hope. Anybody who has experienced the often cruel and devastating impact of cognitive decline would understandably be drawn to such articles and advertising, with the very prospect of

even a partial ‘cure’ holding huge appeal.

At Optimal hearing we recently attended a lecture on this topic by Kevin Munro, Professor of Audiology and director of the Centre for Audiology and Deafness at the University of Manchester. As former chairman of the British Society of Audiology, he is an expert in the field and has recently been working to provide guidance for professionals on this specific subject. It does seem logical that the stimulation to the brain provided by hearing aids would help someone with hearing loss to maintain normal cognitive function, however things may not be quite this simple. Given how emotive the topic is, and given the frequent media headlines and reports, we would like to share the broad headlines and messages to put this into some context.

Why the confusion?

Partly because of terminology. When looking at predicting the likelihood of a disease or condition, it is often helpful to look at what are called ‘risk factors’. In this context, a risk factor is a variable associated with an increased likelihood of disease or infection. Research has shown that someone with hearing loss is at a higher probability of being affected by cognitive decline. Similar correlations also correspond to cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure and level of physical exercise. However (and this is the important bit), correlation doesn’t necessarily mean

causation. Whilst conditions tend to go together, it doesn’t mean that untreated hearing loss actually causes cognitive decline.

There is also overlap in the way they present. Observing someone having difficulty keeping up with conversations, slowness of response, misunderstanding or making strange or irrelevant responses may well be symptoms of untreated hearing loss, cognitive decline or someone who suffers both.

So what do we know?

Untreated (or poorly corrected) hearing loss is well understood to affect mood, increase mental fatigue, reduce short term memory and increase risk of falls. It can strain relationships and lead to social isolation, loneliness, depression and anxiety. Correctly fitted and consistently worn hearing aid can be of huge benefit and make a massive difference.

Current understanding is therefore best summarised that, for some people at high risk of cognitive decline, hearing aids may slow the process, but with current understanding and research this is not certain and there is no definitive evidence currently available which proves this to be the case.

The Pre-school adopted a baby elephant to name and decorate, as part of the LOROS fundraiser, Stomp Round Leicester. Where this summer 120 decorated elephants will Stomp around Leicester. The picture above shows the elephant with the children showing the chosen name. The children have been actively involved naming and decorating the elephant and we aim to raise at least £1000.

We have now returned our baby elephant to LOROS and they will be live around Leicester in July. The pictures above show some of the

final decorated elephant before it was returned, LOROS asked not show a completed photograph so that they are a surprise for the public. Please follow our journey on our Facebook page and we would be very grateful of every donation

In June the children are taking part in a sponsored walk/Stomp to raise a little more.

Any donations are very welcome…. We have raised £700 so far of our £1000 target. If you would like to donate, you are very welcome to bring cash into Preschool and we will add this to our Just Giving page, or you can scan the QR code above as it will take you to Kerry Gamble’s just giving page and you can donate there.

Syston TwinningBon Week-end!

We had a fabulous weekend with our French families over the weekend of 9th to 12th May. It started with a late arrival, not the start we had planned, but we had some quick refreshments and then the host families took their visitors home for an evening meal. On Saturday it was free for the families to do what they wanted. Some of us went to set up the venue for our special VE Day 80 party night and then went for lunch near the canal as it was such a beautiful sunny day. We had a great meal and then wander along the canal before returning to rest and change for the evening. It was a great party with our special guests, the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE and Julie Ellerbeck. We began with a short welcome by our Chair Fiona Henry and Philippe Appriou president of Deville. Sarah Clarke then started the evening with songs from the 1940s which lots of people got up to dance too. She also lead us all in the Conga, as we had the SKB VE Day topper and we recreated the conga! It was amazing and almost everyone, around 50 people joined in! We had a break for buffet and afterwards the Mayor said a few words and cut our special cake, see photo.

Castles to boating along the canal. All too soon the weekend was over and we said Au Revoir until next time on Monday morning.

If you would like to join us for Fun, Food, and Friendship, then please visit our facebook page: Syston Twinning or tel: 0116 269 3221.

New Mayor of Charnwood Sworn in for

2025-26

The new Mayor of Charnwood has been sworn in for 2025-26 following the Council’s Annual Meeting on Monday 12th May.

We had a faux raffle as we had put a raffle ticket behind each place name and we had bought replica chocolate, sweets and biscuits showing how much each item represented. The chocolate was 100gm and represented a weeks ration for a family. A great time was had by all with some people dressing in 1940s style outfits see picture. After the buffet, Eclectic brought us to the present day with an amazing range of songs. Sunday was free with families and each had a range of different activities from visiting

David Northage, borough councillor for Shepshed West, says that he is deeply honoured to become the first citizen of the borough.

Cllr Northage will be representing Charnwood at hundreds of events throughout the Mayoral year and will be supported by his wife Jenny Northage as Mayoress.

ARIES March 21 - April 19

You may feel as if ‘life has thrown you to the lions’ this month as folk appear distracted and ignore you at times. Left to your own devices, you realise that there’s nothing to fear and life is actually quite good! In fact, a problem is solved and you’ll now have time to focus on future plans. So, it’s a good time to start something new.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

With Venus in your sign this month, you’ll be the one with all the charm and sophistication in any room! So, romance runs high as your magnetism shines and attracts all and sundry. Also, it’s a good time to heal long-term health conditions and any personal issues. You may need to take time out to reflect, recover and consolidate.

GEMINI

May 21 - June 21

Others seem dilatory and disinterested and it’s as if you’re the only one with any sign of consciousness and awareness! So, you have to forge ahead and lead the way if you’re to get anything done. Others are quite happy to follow as if they do have some degree of wherewithal, but it’s just that they know what’s best for them.

CANCER

June 22 - July 22

Life continues to expand as you expected and enhanced communication with others makes progress quite speedy. As things unfold, your finances make you quite frustrated and feisty at times although you’ll manage to find unexpected funding if required and will use your push and assertiveness to get what you really want.

LEO July 23 - August 22

With Mars in your sign this month, others will be unfortunate if they try to challenge or annoy your in any way, for you’re sure to get the upper hand! For unexpected levels of energy and determination will surprise both them and yourself as you deal with some of life’s problems. Partners help you to understand on a deeper level.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 21

After months of watching life and keeping quiet, you finally emerge from hiding and confront anything that’s bothering and upsetting! Someone close to you has some issues that require more than just a bit of creativity to sort out. So, yes, some clever push from you helps them to move their life forwards at last. Hurrah!

LIBRA Sept 22 - Oct 22

You skilfully offer your support to others, tactfully, allowing them to offload their annoyances and to also solve their problems. You stand patiently by as they grapple with life’s tough challenges, expecting nothing in return. Talks of holidays and freedom fascinate and absorb you! You overlook trivial issues to look wider.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21

You keep your thoughts privately to yourself and let others take the lead, at least for now! Romance is strong and you’ll enjoy some very happy moments with someone special. This includes some fabulous insights and ideas. Together you could hatch some fantastic future plans. It’s time also to hatch a great new hobby.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21

You hop on board when a partner goes off travelling and having adventures! Being sociable is also their thing and you enjoy all the talk that comes with it and pick up some good ideas when it comes to business and finance. Work is challenging and you have a lot to do whilst remaining calm, patient and dignified.

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19

You’ll see that communication is the key to everything this month when some opportunity opens up to you as the result of reaching out to someone. This will have positive financial consequences - so listen well! Although there will be times when you feel that you’re walking on egg shells, you can really help them out.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18

You’re holding all the cards and others get annoyed about this at times. However, it’s clear that you’re the one who’s thought things through and have gotten top side of everything, so ‘tough’ you think! Why not? It’s taken you a long time to work out what’s what and this has also exhausted you deep down. Your turn now.

PISCES Feb 19 - March 20

You’re working hard and have just so much to offer yet it’s almost as if others are turning a blind eye and are engrossed with other things. Yet the universe is moving on and arranging some more time for you and your own stuff, despite what others want. Needless to say they’ll regret leaving you behind – but you won’t!

Where Were You?

Back in 1945 as the war dragged on, my Aunt worked as a ‘Clippie’ on the Midland Red bus service travelling through villages on routes throughout the County. Lots of roles men previously had were taken on by women for the war effort.

Buses had open platforms at the back giving access to seating inside downstairs and stairs to the upper deck seating where smoking was allowed. It must have been cold and draughty for everyone (except the Driver) taking a bus journey back then. As a ‘Clippie’ my Aunt took fares and issued tickets to passengers with an added discomfort few female toilet facilities being available.

On May 8th 1945 my Auntie Jean was returning home on her day off to the family Butchers shop on Green Lane Road after collecting her shift roster from the bus Depot for the following day when she was caught up in the VE day celebrations and joined the Conga line. A Serviceman took the liberty of placing his Glengarry cap on Jean’s well coiffured hairstyle as they danced around Leicester’s Clock Tower.

80 years on I was contacted by the BBC who had traced relatives of those in the original photo and asked if I would like to take part in their local tribute to the occasion. Of course the answer was a resounding YES!

On Tuesday 6th May 2025 I took part in a radio interview about my Aunt, her life and contribution to World War two.

On Thursday morning 8th May the BBC re-constructed the original Conga image with various relatives. This is the original photo and also the most recent one taken this year. A link is also included should you wish to view the video online. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/ 1ATbqcuLsz/ Is this the last decade where remembrance will be significant? What do you think or possibly a topic to ponder? I wonder.

Syston Celebrates VE Day 80

On Saturday 10th May, The community of Syston gathered on Central Park to celebrate 80 years since VE Day. There were a variety of stalls including Age UK and Penny Lane Fudge, to wander around and plenty of food available to purchase, along with the attendance of Billy Bates Fun Fair for the children. The event featured the acts of, Syston Swing Band, HRT, Queniborough Dance Company and Sarah Clarke (pictured above left) throughout the event.

As always, Syston’s Royal British Legion (RBL) attended (pictured above) and there was a stand next to them featuring the VE Day History (pictured below) as well as the Cadets nearby. These guys seemed to be the focus of the people visiting the stands and so many people were

so generous in donating to the RBL which was lovely to see. It’s always such a pleasure to see them in attendance at our Syston Events.

It is safe to say this was a good event for everyone in Syston and it was even better that the sun was shining all day for it too. It was lovely to see families and groups of people with their picnic blankets and chairs to come out and enjoy the sunshine.

Former Wreake Valley pupil Designs a New Set of Stamps

Before the London Olympics, Adam Simpson was asked to design a stamp for the Triathlon event and he knows from practical experience how gruelling this event can be.

Adam lived in East Goscote but spent much of his time with his grandparents in Queniborough. He went to Wreake Valley College and a short time to Gateway College, Leicester.

From there he went on to the Edinburgh College of Art and then for a short time at the Rhode Island School of Design in America, before studying at the Royal College of Art in London. Since then and now with a wife and two children he produces illustrations which go all over the world from a studio overlooking the Thames in London.

His latest work for the Post Office is a set of stamps based on the folklore of the United Kingdom. See image. These include the Cornish Piskies, the Selkies of Orkney and of course the most famous Loch Ness inhabitant.

These stamps are available on the internet and hopefully in the post office. Mr J. Redfern

The Hollow family enjoying the event

Robert Gordon Hendry (known as Bob) 7.2.1933 - 28.3.2025

He was born in Coventry, his father Frank Hendry died in the war and his Mum Elsie married again to Richard Groves thereby extending his family. Bob was evacuated during the war and used to tell us stories of his escapades with other lads. A particular one was when he poked a wasp’s nest and ended up in hospital. He was extremely wary of wasps ever after as you can imagine.

Bob enjoyed playing different sports, football, cricket, rugby, and was obviously a good team player because when he enlisted in the Navy he used to be posted to places where they needed good players for success when playing against important opponents! Once when playing cricket in Singapore he apparently, when batting broke the clock in the grounds, he hit the ball so hard. And this was the very advice he gave to Craig as a youngster when practising cricket with him and bowling to him on Syston Park.

Bob was a jester. He told stories of when in the Navy he would play tricks on his commanding officers and would get away it because everyone would end up laughing! He also told us of a not so funny incident when he was posted on board the HMS Bulwark Aircraft Carrier. He and a fellow crew member were in a small boat alongside when their little boat got into trouble for some reason, and they lost control. They were drifting towards the Bulwark’s propellers at risk of being churned up! As you can imagine they thought they were goners, but by some miracle they survived unscathed, and Bob was convinced from that point in his life, that he was being looked over and cared for by his maker.

It was in the Navy when stationed in Portsmouth he met Meg who was in the Wrens. This was spoken about at Meg’s funeral, they were married on the 7th January 1956 in St Peter and St Paul’s church and this year they celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary together. We said it before and we’ll say it again, what an achievement! As Meg had to leave the Wren’s, being a married woman, and Bob didn’t like being away from her, he came out of the Navy too, and then of course along came the three children, Amanda, Tim and Craig.

From the Navy he went to work for the British United Shoe Machinery Company, fondly remembered by us as the BU, and he remained there for the rest of his working life! As Meg was the only driver, (when we could afford a car, and Bob’s words “Mum drives I don’t need to” and he never did!) he would don his trouser cycle clips, and cycle from home to the BU in Leicester every working day come rain or shine, no mean feat and proving his fitness. When it did rain you would see him coming, because he wore a big coverall yellow waterproof cape with hood!

Bob could put his hand to almost anything and succeed at it. Whilst at the BU his sportsmanship came to the fore again playing for BU teams, particularly hockey. He was also a member of the BU Dramatic Society, and the family can remember being taken to see him in his plays. On the back of the incident in the Navy we mentioned earlier, he also became involved in the BU Christian Fellowship. When Tim and Craig were younger, they went to Sunday School at the Methodist Church where Tim and Craig joined the Boy’s Brigade (BB). When in need of extra leadership Bob offered his assistance at BB and helped out for quite a while serving his Lord.

Bob loved singing, he had a lovely voice, and even wrote some of his own songs which he kept copies of in a desk in his office, unfortunately, when he changed offices someone cleared his desk and threw the entire contents away. Bob was devastated. He also wrote poetry, and specifically acrostics, where the first word of each line spells out another word. He would write them in all sorts of cards for all sorts of people including family of course, and work colleagues would come to him and ask him to write something for them, sadly all were lost.

Bob liked a bet on the horses! He would follow form and was again quite clever at placing his bets and successful with his winnings, and although sometimes betting on a horse purely because it’s name spoke to him, was still successful. When he would walk home from the village would always come in saying he’d picked up some coin or other on the way. We’re not sure how he managed it, but he would take a turn on those grabber machines and almost always finish with a cuddly toy or gift in hand! A gifted Life! He used to visit the bookies to place his bets on the horses on a Saturday morning and would then bring home a big bag of chips from George Kouzaris’s chip shop. Because of this regular custom and getting to know Bob well, George asked him and Meg to look after the chip shop when he was away, as he could trust them. He and Meg also collected the pools on Friday evenings around Syston and farther afield, apparently Bob used to cycle to Wigston on occasion straight after work to collect pools from there, maybe covering to help someone else out. Bob was heavily involved with the Royal British Legion, a loyal and dedicated member for many years. He was a standard bearer, winning County, and Area competitions and then becoming National Standard Bearer three times! What an achievement! As National Standard Bearer he accompanied families on pilgrimage trips to war graves in different countries, and although he carried out his duties at the war graves with great dignity, he

was also the life and soul of the party when socialising with the families, bringing laughter and good cheer when needed. Later he trained and mentored future Standard bearers and became National Parade Marshal, eventually helping to train his successors. Hence the Standard Bearers Guard of honour on Bob’s arrival to the church as shown in our picture left and below which includes the National, Regional, Leicestershire, Syston and surrounding area paying tribute to him.

Whilst on the Committee for Syston Royal British Legion Branch and Club he was a jack of all trades. He handled finance, hire of the hall, helped to stock up the bar, played in the Cribbage team, even cleaned up after hirings, popping balloons that had risen to the ceiling by firing elastic bands at them!! He also took on the role of shhh! Santa Claus for Syston Royal British Legion’s Women’s Section at their annual Christmas Bazaar. He did so well he was engaged/employed to perform Santa Claus at the Shires Shopping Centre!! The family publicly thanked the Royal British Legion for turning out to the funeral to show their respect for their Dad, for his total dedication over the years in all aspects of service to the Legion, he certainly deserves it. Then there’s Bob’s (and Meg’s) loyalty to their hometown of Syston, not only their involvement with the Legion but in running the Syston Town Carnival for over 40 years, latterly with the help of a committee, which was mostly run in aid of local charities. As well as helping through all the prepreparations, Bob used to be on the park early on the morning of the Carnival marking out places for the stallholders, then making sure everyone was happy during the event and helping to clear up afterwards. He was also very proud of the treasure hunts around the village that he wrote clues for to take place at Carnival time. Together they ran a Carer’s Group from St Peter’s Court organising trips out for meals and boat excursions and more, and this in their late 70’s/80’s and when once again. Bob would be providing the jollity for each occasion. For all this they were recognised and honoured for their services to the Town by Syston Town Council.

Bob was a carer, he cared deeply for and about everyone especially his family! He was a kind, clever, caring husband and provider, dad, grandpa and great grandpa who would always end our visit or phone call with a God Bless you and mean it. The family said: “he’ll be up there now alongside mum, our dad the Jester, life and soul of the party bringing laughter and good cheer. We will always love you dad. Night, night God bless.”

The family want to thank the Syston Branch of the Royal British Legion for all their help in making both their parents funerals special.

JULY

Summer’s Here

What beautiful weather we are having (at least it is as I’m writing this article). People are out buying bedding plants, clearing weeds, jet washing patios and driveways and, of course, the barbeque has probably had its first airing. I’d like to add another job to this list - clearing the loose vegetation and debris from the brook and the banks of the brook.

If you live next to the brook, please have a look. If there is any loose vegetation or debris that could be removed SAFELY please clear it, if you need any help please contact us.

We need to stop this loose stuff being carried downstream where it can cause a blockage. We appreciate that some residents have erected fences which means they have no easy access to the brook bank but if we could ask you to still look and maybe think of a way it could be SAFELY cleared or again contact us and we’ll see if we can help.

We do know of some areas that residents have reported to the EA, we’ll chase them up to see what they are planning to do. If we see any works being done we’ll put it on our Facebook page.

One bit of good news is that the large blockage we reported last month should be cleared in the next few weeks, fingers crossed.

BE KIND, BE SAFE, BE HAPPY

Once again we’ve been very busy and we’ve recently been having new members show more interest since we've started putting our articles into the Stn We want to say a quick thank you to all of those who take the time to read our articles and learn about who we are and what we do. We’re thrilled that we are reaching more people!

Due to us getting busier and reaching new people we are looking for volunteers to help us out.

If you want to help the community and help us and have fun while you're at it, then please do get in touch with us below at:

0777 469 5160 madsgroup@yahoo.com

(9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday)

We are struggling with keeping on top of teas and coffees but we would also like to find someone who would volunteer their time to help us with the members too. If you have or know anyone with a history of working in a Mental Health sector then we would love it if you would be willing to volunteer a few hours a week on a Wednesday morning.

Other than being on the search for volunteers we are still having fun and laughing together. Sometimes it’s all you need. Even if its having a laugh doing a little quiz, bingo or crafting, we make it all as fun as we can without the seriousness.

At the MADS Group, we try to make everything as fun as possible. If you walk away from our group and you've laughed and had fun then you know you've found a place where you feel you'll belong. Written by Deanna Johnson [DISCLAIMER: We are not medical or healthcare professionals. We just want to provide a safe space for those who need the help to take that step into reaching out for the correct professional support which we can signpost members to.]

From Your Green Party Borough Councillors

By the time you read this, we expect the first formal response from Government on the future of local councils in Leicestershire. These proposals could affect every part of our daily lives — from how bins are collected to how planning decisions are made.

Most controversially, the Mayor of Leicester submitted a last-minute proposal to extend the city’s boundaries into Charnwood — including areas like Syston and Queniborough. This was completely unacceptable and done without any meaningful consultation with the people who live here. We have consistently opposed any plans that would see our communities swallowed into the city or placed under an oversized ‘super council’. Local decisions must be made by local people who understand our towns and villages — not distant officials. We’re also calling on the new Labour government to think again about their ‘Planning Reform’ Bill. As it stands, the bill risks cutting out local voices in the planning process, reducing consultation, and weakening protections for our communities. In areas like Syston - already under huge pressure from new developments - we need more local accountability, not less.

Flooding remains a major concern. The

Scrutiny Commission at Charnwood has endorsed the findings of a crossparty investigation into how the council can better support communities during local flood events. However, we’re still waiting for the comprehensive report from the County Council. Until we have the full picture from all agencies involved, it’s hard to see how we’ll get the changes we urgently need. We will keep pushing for these answers and action.

Cllr Laurie Needham has also been working closely with the residents of St Peter’s Court, here in Syston, in response to the Council’s proposals to sell off sheltered accommodation across the borough. Residents have raised serious concerns about losing not just a place to live, but a vibrant, supportive community in a perfect central location. St Peter’s Court is more than a housing site - it’s a lifeline for many. Residents are calling for investment in improvements rather than closure, and for better promotion of the site to future tenants. We are standing with them and urging the Council to explore more positive, long-term options.

As ever, we’re here to represent you and will continue to stand up for Syston and surrounding villages.

Heart of England Chorus Entertains

Heart of England Chorus are promoting Barber Shop style singing to new audiences. It’s a unique singing style that has no music and we sing in 4-part harmonies. Our group was established over 50 years ago and is changing with the times to introduce more modern songs along with our well-established repertoire. We were invited to perform at a ‘Rainbows got Talent’ show at the Wigston Liberal Club on March 22nd. It was a fabulous show with a wide variety of talents including singing and dancing. It was a fun event and everyone enjoyed each act, applause rang through the room after each performance. We are delighted to have shared this experience to raise money for Rainbows.

After this performance we made our way to the Curtis Weston House in Wigston where we sang a range of songs to their residents. Depending on our audience Continues on page 24

Easter Joy at Syston Baptist

Church

Syston Baptist Church was buzzing with life and joy this Easter as we welcomed our community to celebrate the season with us.

Our Good Friday coffee morning was a great success, with plenty of friendly faces enjoyingcoffee, conversation and of course, hot cross buns!

Families joined in the fun with a lively Easter craft session,

an exciting egg hunt and a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny that brought smiles all round. Later that day, we shared in a reflective and meaningful Good Friday communion service.

Easter Sunday began with breakfast together and a joyful family service featuring contributions from the children which helped us all pause and reflect on the true meaning of Easter: the hope and new life found in Jesus.

May marked the successful launch of a brand-new ladies' craft and fellowship group, Sisters in Stitches. It was a joyful morning filled with creativity, conversation and connection and we’re excited for all that’s to come as the group continues to grow.

We’d love to welcome you to our regular Sunday services at 10:30am. We run Sunday School every week during the service except for during our family services on the last Sunday of each month, which are designed to be all-age friendly.

To stay up to date with what’s happening or to get in touch search for Syston Baptist on Facebook, Instagram or online to access our website. Come and discover what we're all about! A warm welcome awaits you.

we sometimes sing some of the ‘good old songs’ enjoyed by the more mature people, so we took them back to their younger days. It was clear from the smiles that followed that we had hit the right note so to speak. A number of them joined in with our singing with a smile on their faces, it was a joy for us to see such a fabulous response. This is definitely a place we would be happy to visit again in the future.

If you would like to come along to see if you would like to join our group, please pop along to our rehearsals each Monday evening at Birstall Social Club from 7.30-10.00pm. We are a non-audition chorus so please be assured you will not be expected to sing on your own.

Additionally, if you would like to discuss our chorus performing for you please contact John Phillips on 0773 852 6757 to have a chat.

Rainbows Classic Car Run

On behalf of the organisers of the Rainbows Hospice ‘Drive it Day’ Classic Car Run held on Sunday April 27th, we would like to thank all those who took part and who helped make it such a successful day.

The purpose of the event was primarily to raise funds for the Rainbows Hospice, but also to promote the classic car movement and celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial organised in 1900 to prove that the new-fangled contraption, the motor vehicle, was a viable means of transport. We are very pleased to report that the event proved to be a big success on both fronts, as over 80 classic cars took part, some dating back to the 1930’s, and an amazing £1500 was raised for Rainbows!

This year’s Run was blessed with glorious weather and started at Stonehurst Farm in Mountsorrel, then followed a 40-mile scenic route along minor country lanes. A welcome coffee and comfort break was taken at Bawdon Lodge Farm, before returning to Stonehurst Farm in time to join many other classic cars that were attending a classic show there, where the hog roast, bar, café, and all the other family attractions on offer proved very popular.

We hope that everyone who took part enjoyed the day as much as the organising team. The effort put in by everyone created a great atmosphere amongst all those taking part, making

it an exceptional day. Most thanks need to go to all the staff at Stonehurst Farm who accommodated us so well, and to the weather gods that certainly smiled on us all throughout the day.

Please make a note in your diary that the next event will be another Rainbows Run on Sunday September 7th, so keep an eye open for further details nearer the time.

Can You Help?

The Stn has been contacted by the organiser of a GoFundMe campaign by Scott Kirke to support his father, who has been severely impacted after his van was stolen.

On 7th May, Scott’s father’s van was stolen from outside his home in Syston. While the van was later recovered, it was damaged beyond repair. Unfortunately, several tools and equipment, including ladders and scaffolding, were still on the van and have not been recovered.

As a self-employed worker for over 40 years, Scott's father is facing an incredibly difficult situation. With only five years left until retirement, he cannot afford to replace his van and equipment. Without these, he is unable to work, which would have a lasting impact on his livelihood. If you can help him in this difficult time by giving what you can, then please visit:

Syston Rugby Club

A successful season for the first XV and other teams

Huddersfield RUFC as they arrived for the Semi-final of the Papa John Cup Regional 1 Championship.

A good crowd arrived early to make the most of the weather, with estimates of between 400 and 500 spectators the bar was doing a roaring trade, along with a posh pizza van making a very pleasant look and feel to the ground while watching a warm-up to help calm the nervous before KO.

The commitment shown from all the Syston players was immense, the ball carrying into heavy tackles and then lightning quick ruck clearouts of much bigger opposition was a testimony of both their commitment

and the coaching skills of Alex White and his fellow coaches, however our usual patterns and strike runners were getting shut down and turned back inside not allowing our outside backs to find space.

To go all season unbeaten in the Midlands Division 1 and win the Leicestershire County Cup at Tigers under lights was a fantastic achievement.

I hope they are not too disappointed and remember what they have achieved this year!!!

Andy Ward, President

Congratulations Huddersfield and the best of luck in the final. A fantastic game with both sides giving their all which saw Huddersfield winning 2529. This brings an end to our first XV’s season and what a fabulous season it has been. Undefeated in the league promoted to National League 2 as champions.

Leicestershire county cup champions. Our only loss today to Huddersfield. The club could not be prouder of you all. A great turnout!

Huge thanks to Alex White our Head of Rugby, our coaching team, players, supporters and our amazing sponsors.

Other successes for the club include: Syston second XV also won their league, undefeated all season and

now gain promotion. The third team were 2nd in their league and the 4th team were fourth in their league. So a brilliant result all round.

Both the first and second team won their respective county cup finals.

U16’s won the county cup, U10’s won the Prima Cup (playing at Welford Road), pictured below.

U15’s were runners up for the county cup.

U17’s drew the county cup final. We are starting girl’s rugby at Syston next season – a massive step forward for the club.

Well done to the players and coaching team for a fantastic performance across the competition and their families and friends for supporting.
