Air Ambulance Flying Heroes Fundraiser

Tina wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Air Ambulance Flying Heroes fundraiser. She does appreciate the efforts of everyone who took part from the meetings at the Glenfield with Emily and Mark Lovett, to the help from Julie and the Air Ambulance team, the Secret Garden for allowing us to use their amazing grounds. A huge thank you to Aartis Dance Academy, shown below, for performing.

Tina had a great day and although it stressed her out massively the results are the best, so, in all they have raised £3,142.

That is an amazing amount for the Air Ambulance and well over the cost of a mission so thank you to everyone.

The stress of getting all the prizes, to sorting stuff out for the event has paid off, there's been a lot of amazing feedback from people who attended. They said it was a great day with lovely weather.

Tina would like to say a big thank you to her amazing biker family for making a spectacular entrance to the hospital, you made her and the charity proud.

Next step will be going up to the base

to do the cheque presentation with the helicopters, can't wait, and hopefully to meet the Critical Care Paramedic and Doctor who came out to me and saved my arm, as if it had been in that dislocated position for much longer, I might have lost blood flow and lost my right arm.

The Air Ambulance do an amazing job, please keep supporting them.

Thank you on behalf of The Air Ambulance Service

Mothering Sunday 30th March

The congregations of St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Syston and St Hilda’s Church, East Goscote joined forces to hold a joyful celebration of this special day. At the end of the service the peoples of the two churches exchanged gifts, one of primulas and the other of Sweet Violets, after which they moved to the hall at the back of the church for refreshments, including delicious, home made cakes!

Pies, Peas and Puds

This event was held in the Church Hall in Lower Church Street on April 5th. The participants enjoyed a really good meal of Pukka Pies, with mushy or frozen peas, and potatoes, followed by a selection of home made desserts. While waiting for their meal there were a couple of quiz sheets on the tables seeking answers. After the meal well known singer Kerry Jean generously gave her time to entertain us with very familiar songs to

sing or hum along to, or even rock and roll to!

We were incredibly blessed by the wonderful support from the wider Syston community.

Syston Knitting Banksy donated two raffle prizes, Pukka Pies donated the pies, Tesco donated the frozen Peas, Gamble and Hollis donated two raffle prizes, Rothley Vineyard donated a prize.

Evensong with Leicester Cathedral Choir

The Rt. Hon Edward

Argar MP Member of Parliament for Melton & Syston

I wanted to take the opportunity in Syston Town News to update local residents on my stance on the proposals recently put forward for the reorganisation of our local councils, as well as to highlight a fantastic local community initiative that I was able to visit in Syston over the Easter recess. An issue that has hit the news locally in recently months is the different proposals put forward to the Government for the reorganisation of local councils, following the Government's decision to scrap county, borough and district councils and to replace them in the coming years with single-tier unitary local Government, and to propose further devolution of powers. The Government have made it clear it will simply impose changes, if local areas don't make their own proposals, so we have seen the county council, borough and district councils, and City Mayor of Leicester each put forward their own, different, initial proposals to the Government. While the proposals recently put forward are only outline initial proposals, back in January I set out my concerns to BBC Radio Leicester and the Press, and I have to say these have been increased recently by the Mayor of Leicester's

proposals for a land-grab by the city to take over areas firmly in the county at present, like Thurmaston and Syston, proposals that understandably have sparked huge concern among local residents.

I have been clear that, in looking at the different proposals, we cannot simply be presented with a set of proposals on a take it or leave it basis, there must be genuine engagement and partnership working with our communities and our local residents, who must be listened to; whatever emerges from this process must not break or distance those vital local democratic links of accountability, and local services, between local councillors, decision-making, and our local communities; but for me the most important red line is that we must oppose strongly the Labour City Mayor's attempt to absorb Thurmaston, Syston, and a swathe of other local county villages and towns into an expanded city of Leicester - Syston is firmly in the county, and should remain so - as Syston's local MP I will continue to fight any plans for the city to swallow Syston.

On another local matter, I also recently joined Raj and the team at the Timeless Connections Dementia Friendly Cafe, funded by our local NHS and donations, which is held every Thursday between 1pm and 4.30pm in the Community Hub Cafe on Syston's High Street. It was great to meet Raj and the team, who have created not

just a cafe, but as they put it, a haven for heartfelt moments, which helps create memories in a warm, friendly space, where people come together and build friendships - and all with a nice cuppa and some cake! Although Syston is a town, I always feel that it still has the friendliness of a village about it, with so many individuals volunteering and so many organisations and initiatives to help support and strengthen the community, and the Dementia Friendly Cafe is a part of that - huge credit to the whole team for the fantastic work they do. And finally, I write this article as we approach the Easter weekend, which makes it timely for me to mention the front page story in the last edition of STN. Syston's parish church of St Peter and St Paul plays a huge part in community life in Syston, whether for those of faith, or for people who attend community functions in the church - I have lost count of the number of events I have been to in the church over the last decade, both as the local MP and also in a personal capacity. It is also a central part of the history of the townbut as was set out in the last STN, its ancient boiler is in urgent need of replacement and, although it may seem a way off as we approach summer, anyone who has been in the church in the height of winter knows how important that boiler is! I would encourage anyone who is able to to support this very good fundraising cause.

Professional teeth

whitening is a safe and effecve cosmec dental procedure that removes stains and discolouraon from your teeth, revealing a brighter, whiter smile. Unlike over-the-counter whitening products, professional treatments use a higher concentraon of bleaching agents to achieve more dramac and long-lasng results. We offer a variety of whitening opons to suit your individual needs and preferences.

At-Home Whitening allows you to whiten your teeth at home. We provide bespoke whitening trays that perfectly fit your teeth. The Denst supplies a professional-grade whitening gel. You wear these trays for a designated period daily, gradually achieving a whiter smile.

How Whitening Works

Whitening breaks down stain molecules. Teeth can become discoloured over me due to various factors like consuming pigmented foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine), smoking or simply the natural ageing process. These substances leave behind ny parcles that become embedded within the enamel (outer layer) and denn (inner layer) of your teeth.

Professional treatments ulise bleaching agents, most commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These agents work by gently penetrang the tooth enamel and denn. Once inside, the peroxide breaks down the stain molecules into smaller, colourless components. These smaller parcles are then easily removed through saliva, revealing a brighter, whiter tooth surface.

Please note that whitening doesn’t lighten exisng dental work like

crowns or fillings, so you may need to discuss touch-ups with your denst if you have restoraons in your smile line.

Teeth Whitening for Sensive Teeth

If you have sensive teeth, whitening can sll be an opon for you. Many people with sensive teeth can achieve a brighter smile with careful consideraon. We understand your concerns and offer whitening opons specifically for sensive teeth. These treatments oen contain lower concentraons of bleaching agents and incorporate desensising ingredients to minimise discomfort. While the treatment for sensive teeth can be effecve, it may take longer to achieve your desired results compared to standard treatments. Addionally, you might experience temporary increased sensivity following the whitening process. Our aim is to discuss your individual needs and recommend a tailored whitening approach to minimise discomfort while helping achieve your desired result.

Tales from the Plot May

May is one of the busiest months of the year. My potatoes are now inhurrah! It's a month I really enjoytowards the end

of May you can hopefully believe that the frosts are gone, although I must say it’s never a certainty, and as the old saying goes ‘beware of the last full moon in May’.

Parsnips are an absolute pain. Never save seeds from a previous year. I’ve done it times - I’ve been too tight to throw them away and always believe they’ll be alright, they never are. Fresh seed must be sown in abundance - just put the whole packet in and that way you may end up with a row of parsnips, you can always thin them out if by some miracle they all come up!

Tel: 01509 812 430

Mob: 0776 760 3746

May is also bean month: this year I’ll be growing a variety of runner beans called white lady - the reason is that they have white flowers instead of red. I’m told this keeps the blackfly away as it’s the red flowers that attract them, last year it seemed to work a treat. I shall also be growing some bush French beans called Annabel for no other reason than it’s my granddaughter’s name. I also grow French climbing beans called Cobra, they’re very reliable and grow profusely. Don't forget the word ‘Bingo’ when planting beans plant them eyes down. Whether it makes any difference or not is debatable. I normally plant a few marigolds around the bottom of the runner

beans, this helps deter the black fly, also a couple of sunflowers amongst them not only for the looks but they attract the bees and help pollination. As with all the bean crops try and pick them while they’re young and tender. Towards the end of the month I will also plant sweetcorn, I start them off in trays covered in clingfilm. Once I see them pushing at the clingfilm I rip it off and allow them to grow on. I grow a variety called Incredible and I have to say they are. It’s a comforting feeling that we have hopefully a warm summer ahead of us, the allotments supply us not only with wonderful vegetables and fruit but also a refuge of peace and quiet, I’m sure without doubt that it extends the life of those that tend the allotments - there are 120+ plots so there’s over 120 families that benefit from the allotments. I’ve heard them described as a jewel in Syston‘s crown and over the years they have won many awards and have been judged as being one of the best allotment sites in England. We are in the centre of the town so there is always a concern that one day we will have to fight off a builder or developer, the allotments are always in great demand. This actually happened in April, when an agent was seen on a plot and challenged as to what they were doing. Members of the Allotments attended the Amenities meeting and gave their views, fortunately, the council voted against it, so thank you for protecting these very important part of Syston. If you fancy growing your own and having an allotment it’s totally free to put your name on the waiting list at the council office - plots do become available every year with most waiting around three years for their own plot and once you’ve got it, providing you make use of it and keep it tidy, it’s yours.

Struggling with Hearing Aids? Five Reasons

You Are Still Saying “Pardon”

You’ve taken a positive step and been fitted with a hearing aid — that’s a great move. But maybe you’re still missing parts of conversations, struggling in certain environments, or constantly adjusting the fit or volume. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Hearing aids can be lifechanging, but only when everything is working in harmony. Simply having a hearing aid isn’t always enough.

In fact, a study from Manchester University found that around 20% of people in the UK who are issued hearing aids never use them. Of those who do, only about half wear them regularly. At Optimal Hearing in Syston, we support patients who are

just beginning their hearing journey, as well as those who are feeling let down by their current hearing aids. We often see similar patterns in the issues that people face. Here are five of the most common ones:

1. Physical Fit

A hearing aid should feel comfortable and stay securely in place every time you wear it. If the fit isn’t quite right, you may find it uncomfortable, fiddly to insert, or prone to sitting at the wrong angle. Some may even fall out entirely. Poorly fitted hearing aids are usually more visible and less effective. Sadly, many people are using hearing aids that don’t fit them as well as they should.

2. Acoustics

If a hearing aid doesn’t fit well, it usually won’t sound right either. The shape and design of your ear, the length of your ear canal, and your specific hearing prescription all play a role in how your hearing aid should be built and tuned. Acoustic design matters — no amount of clever technology can fully compensate for physical mismatches. Even small adjustments to tubing, vents or casing can significantly affect sound quality. Yet we often see patients wearing configurations that aren’t well suited to their needs.

3. Dirty Devices

Dust, wax and moisture can block

microphones, receivers or filters — leading to distorted or muffled sound. Often, this happens gradually, making it hard to notice. Many people aren’t shown how to properly clean their devices and don’t have access to professional maintenance. A 6 monthly service can make a huge difference.

4. Technology Mismatch

Not all hearing aids are the same. What works for one person might not suit another, depending on lifestyle, listening environments, and degree of hearing loss. Some users are limited by the range of devices offered through certain providers or healthcare systems. Today’s hearing aid technologies are incredibly advanced, but they still need to be the right match for the user.

5. Outdated Hearing Tests

Your hearing can change, so hearing aids need regular reprogramming to stay effective. If your hearing aids were fitted based on an old test, they may not be addressing your current needs. We recommend getting your hearing checked at least every two years.

If any of these issues sound familiar, don’t worry — they’re all fixable. At Optimal Hearing, we don’t believe in “just OK.” We’re here to help people hear their best, with expert advice, service and support.

Yet another month with a lot of things going on. So here’s our recap for you! First of all, we want to touch on a subject that was very hard hitting to us all at the group.

One of our longest attending members sadly passed away recently. This was very difficult news for us all to receive as they had been coming to our group pretty much since we started. We are so glad we were able to help them before their passing. For obvious reasons we are keeping the identity confidential as we do with all members of the group. We hope that their family read this as we want to say that they were adored by staff and members alike and really brought a special contribution to the group that no one could replicate. Their personality was beyond anything we could explain and they really were one of a kind. They left a huge impression on the group with their kind heart. The laughs we had were amazing and we will never forget them.

On a cheerier note, Bev, George and Lillie were invited to Second Time Around in Syston and were presented with a donation on March 27th (pictured right) for our group as well as two craft boxes.

You’ll find the article from Second Time

Around on page 8 in this issue of the Stn as well as the full image they took on the day.

• Animal Therapy

• Meditation Sessions

This was wonderful news for our group and it really shows how people in Syston really do see the hard

work and effort we put in to make MADS what it is. The support we gain from the community is a huge help to keep us doing what we do for Syston and we really hope that this encourages more people to reach out and make this group better than ever.

Again, we want to thank Tracey at Tesco for their regular donations to help keep our essentials topped up and the group running smoothly.

We couldn't run this group without the help of these amazing people who donate, come in and talk to the members, or even volunteer a bit of time to help out in sessions. It is greatly appreciated.

We are constantly looking for people to come and visit us and our members. This could range from:

• Mental Health Professionals

• Singers or Performers

• Craft Sessions

If you know how you can help with any of these or something else to benefit Mental Health then please do get in touch with us below at: 0777 469 5160 madsgroup@yahoo.com (9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday)

Written by Deanna Johnson [DISCLAIMER: We are not medical or healthcare professionals. We just want to provide a safe space for those who need the help to take that step into reaching out for the correct professional support which we can signpost members to.]

Article Correction

In the St Peter and St Paul Church article (April issue) with regard to the volunteers keeping the Church and churchyard maintained. The reference was to the volunteers who help in the churchyard in addition to the Syston Town Council estates staff and it should have been made clear that the overall responsibility for the maintenance of the church yard lies with the Syston Town Council, however, the volunteers help out when necessary, which the Town Council are thankful for.

Second Time Around Presentations

We at Second Time Around in town square invited the M.A.D.S group and Syston Make and Play to come to the shop on 27th March to receive a cheque to help their groups.

Both groups are invaluable to the Syston community and these lovely people give up their time to make

these groups succeed and flourish. We also gave two boxes of craft donations to M.A.D.S and two bags of toys to Syston make and play. As well as both groups visiting us to receive their cheques, we popped in to Syston Lodge Residential Home on Oxford Street to take a bag of goodies including some winter

woollies, large print books, some new scarves for the residents for when they are out and about, and toiletries for the residents. It was great to meet a couple of the care staff at the same time.

Thank you to the Syston community for helping us by supporting our shop. Without the local community we wouldn’t be able to continue to help different groups, this is only made possible by the donations brought into the shop, such as clothing, books, household, vinyl, handbags, shoes, toiletries etc… so thank you to everyone and a big thank you to these local groups for all that they do.

Young at Heart

On Thursday 10th April the Stn was invited to visit the Young at Heart to capture the group with the table set for their Easter lunch. Everyone was looking very spring like in their bright spring colours.

The table was decorated with handmade flowers and the menu cover had been decorated by Dorothy and the table at the entrance was decorated with everything Easter related and it was beautiful.

Thank you Pam and everyone for making us welcome and we hope you all had a lovely Easter.

Young at heart have 20 members and we meet every Thursday. If anyone would like to come and join us we have spaces, please get in touch with Age Concern on 0116 260 1476, transport can be provided.

Our members arrive at 10.30am and have tea and biscuits, we play dominoes and other games, then lunch is served at 12noon.

After lunch we play either bingo, play your cards right or maybe a quiz.

The U3A Ukulele band and singers have entertained us and everyone enjoyed it.

Lately, our funds were getting low so Pam asked for support from our local shops. We would like to say a very big thank you to Tesco and Eye Care for their donation of Easter eggs for our members.

Also Second Time Around for their generous donation to boost our funds.

VE Day 80 Years On

A stall on the Park showing some of Syston’s History of WW2.

Situated next to the British Legion gazebo, the church stall will have displays about V.E. Day 1945 and albums containing information about Syston men who fought in WW2.

Originally planned as an event to be held in the Parish Church, where we would have been able to show the complete Remembrance books of all the Syston men who died fighting in WW2 on a large screen, we have been forced to relocate our display and the books to the Central Park as the church is likely to be in disarray, if the plumbing work to install a new heating system has started.

Do come and visit us and find out about Syston and its people eighty years ago.

The event will run from 12noon until 5pm on Central Park on Saturday 10th May.

On 10th March we gathered to give thanks to God for the life of our dear friend Dendre Marriott. (17th December 1928-9th February 2025)

Dendre had been an active member of the Broadway Gospel Hall for about 40 years. She was loved by young and old alike, with a ready smile and generous, kind spirit. She was a great encourager and she has brought many friends to various activities at the hall over the years.

Dendre enjoyed the Ladies meeting, singing hymns and listening to a Christian message and even when housebound in her later years she would invite members to her home for a time of fellowship.

Dendre had a particular interest in overseas missionary work, knitting blankets and baby clothes for a hospital in Zambia and joining the missionary prayer meetings.

We here at Broadway have been blessed by her warm and caring fellowship, and although her loss has left a huge gap, we are comforted by the knowledge that she is with her Lord and Saviour.

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery

Hello everyone.

The cemetery was looking fantastic for Mother's Day, thank you everyone for your help.

The wildflower garden is now seeded and starting to shoot. The trees are housing bird nests you can see and hear the twittering especially the Robins and the Blackbirds.

We have noticed lots of broken pots and vases. Please be mindful of this. We have removed quite a few that were broken during the frosts in the early part of the year so if your vase or pot is missing it was probably down to this.

May 8th is the 80th anniversary of VE Day and the Friends of Syston Cemetery would like to thank SKB who has knitted a special tribute for us to include in our display, also the Cemetery Open Day is June 7th this year from 1.00 to 3.00pm why not pop along and see us or just come and chill in the peaceful surroundings.

Please remember the Chapel is available to hire for services. (this is getting quite popular now). It's because it's so beautiful, I’m biased of course. It can be decorated with flowers of your choice.

We’re always looking for new people to help us young or old so if you can spare an hour occasionally why not come and join us. If you’d like to please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council, the same goes if you’d like to plant or adopt a standard rose along the runways, just contact Catherine Voyce on 0116 260 7150.

Take care all.

Have You Done Your Homework?

Get ready to relive the ups and downs of school life this summer when Syston's very own QT Theatre Group stage John Godber's timeless comedy, Teechers.

Join Gail, Hobby, and Salty, three spirited school leavers, as they hilariously re-enact their memorable time at Whitewall School. From eccentric teachers and schoolyard dramas to budget struggles and ambitious dreams, this play is a wonderful mix of nostalgia, chaos, and heartfelt humour.

Brought to life by an incredible cast— QT favourites Matt Ormerod, Ranata Maynard and Tobias Garner, play school-leavers Salty, Gail, and Hobby alongside Jo Gallagher as over dramatic head mistress Mrs Parry, and sporty PE teacher Miss Prime. We are delighted to welcome newcomer David Jones to the QT family as the idealistic brand-new drama teacher Mr. Nixon.

This production promises an evening packed with laughs and touching moments. Directed by Leigh White. We quickly caught up with Leigh

White, director of Teechers to find out a little more about how rehearsals are going.

“We are about three weeks into rehearsals now and we are having lots of fun. The script is hilarious, and the challenge of this play is the cast play multiple characters and must switch quickly from being school kids to teachers, back to school kids in the blink of an eye. It’s chaos but great fun. We are also staging the play in a very different way and audiences are going to see something very exciting and feel very much part of the story and the action. I won't say any more on that right now. I hope it will be a lovely surprise".

Jeanne Douglas offers psychic readings in Palmistry, Tarot, Crystal and Personal Astrology. Her telephone numbers are 01664 562 471 or 07931 293 855.

ARIES March 20 - April 19

Love is in the air even though the object of your desires tends to say and do the wrong things from time to time these days! This brings up old wounds from the past and yet you can easily heal these through communicating and finding some middle ground. Long-term ideas excite you and you start to work out how to manifest them.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

Birthdays always herald new beginnings and also some changes round and about, especially where loved ones are concerned. But rest assured that these are all fated and occurring naturally as cycles end and restart. So do try to trust in the universe even though there’s a little chaos now and then! Enjoy your growing popularity.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

You’re sitting pretty in life these days and tend to always get your own way. But this is all down to hard work and application and your success relies on past investments in socialising and networking. Life is seldom dull these days and this month will see travel and having a few adventures! You’re currently the cleverest star of the zodiac.

CANCER June 21 - July 21

You have to speculate to accumulate and spending some of your well-earned cash really is necessary for one reason or another and this may be a sudden and unexpected demand. You take time out to think things through quietly and in some isolation, getting ready to express yourself to others further down the line

LEO July 22 - August 22

You’re full of energy and zest for life! Hurrah! You’re also probably a little feisty about something and need to get this off your chest. Others seem to be having all the fun yet they invite you to some quite fancy little events. Study goes well and loved ones help you to work things out, contributing their thoughts and opinions.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

You do worry at times about certain loved ones who seem to always take the impractical and difficult route! They seem happy nevertheless and that’s all that matters. Life tends to be a little quiet at times this month and you’ll be happy enough with your head in a book or pursuing some study or research. Peace at last.

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

Honest discussions with your partner reaps rewards and puts the whole world to right! Life seems so much sweeter after that. Consider pursuing a favourite hobby if you want to feel boosted and re-energised. Using your creative talents at work also goes well when you get the recognition that you need.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21

The full moon in your sign this month helps you to put things into perspective and move on! For there are new things that you want to explore and discover. A happy adventure with a soul mate goes well and you may consider working together in some way, in the future. For once, your impulsive behaviour works out well.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 20

Life is quiet for you this month and yet others may offer you an opportunity to get out and about and have yourself some fun! You’re having to work hard on a confusing issue that threatens to get out of hand. Try to relax and yet also remain alert and focused; the answers really will start to come to you. Just try.

CAPRICORN Dec 21 - Jan 19

You may have to assert yourself when someone close gets a little edgy and speaks out of turn or is even testy. Try to remain calm and think before you speak your turn, if you can. When it comes to cash matters, you’re holding all the cards and could wield some power if you care to! You’re more interested in having fun.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 17

A change in the way you see things helps to put a few issues well behind you. You know that you have to get creative if you are to improve your financial situation. A loved one has a few issues that are a little sorrowful and concerning. Just give things time and it’s amazing how things will improve. Reading and research go well.

PISCES Feb 18 - March 19

You really do have the key to one or two issues that you’re facing, if only you can get down and do the work. Yet it does seem that there is just too much to do to be honest! So take one step at a time and don’t be afraid to face issues even if this is painful. Hiding away won’t help. A new start is around the corner, believe me.

Where Does Time Go!

April 2025, another flood Drop-In session attended, more discussions/ emails with various Authorities and the start of the other purpose for setting up the group:

Assist Riparian Owners who find it difficult to carry out their responsibilities.

Establish a group of volunteers to remove rubbish and vegetation from the brook as and when necessary.

So far we’ve been able to help two households, we’ve cleared metal fencing, trees trunks and branches that had been washed down from upstream. At a third property we visited we found an enormous amount of vegetation that is causing a

blockage and we are pleased to say that the EA has agreed to remove this. Let’s all try and keep this proactive approach going. Everyone who lives by the brook - take a look at your area and if there is anything that needs removing please contact us if you need help. Similarly, if you are struggling to clear out your home or garden after the flood please contact us.

If you would like to volunteer our Facebook page has a volunteer form you can click on and complete, we have had some replies but it would be good if we can get a lot more. We are also taking leaflets around the area asking for volunteers. The volunteer work is on a needs basis, if there’s no need we won’t bother you.

JB Kitchen

On the 27th March, your editor had the pleasure of attending the soft opening of JB Kitchen in Syston. The evening was filled with invited guests some had supported Jordan along his journey from starting up in Birstall after he began cooking with his sister and delivering meals to people isolating in Covid.

It was a lovely evening and the food was amazing. Jordan describes his food as Modern European and he along with his team which includes

his two sisters, provided excellent service and spent time chatting to everyone that attended. It is a wonderful new addition to Syston, having this multi award winning restaurant joining up with The Pharmacie Arms to create a unique provision of craft beers and a big selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks downstairs and amazing food upstairs. We wish them all great success going forward. For opening hours check out the advert below. Can’t wait to visit again and enjoy more delicious food.

Hats Spring Play

Hello everyone. Here we are again with another update of our Spring Play ‘Doughnuts for the depressed’ a comedy/farce written by H E Hubler and produced with the permission of Scripts for Stage.

Whilst we cannot say we always get things right we can say that we always entertain, even the disasters turn into memorable occasions. Like the time when a Pantomime Villain appeared on stage in a puff of smoke and a bang from the pyrotechnics, the smoke alarm went off and we had to evacuate the audience. And the time when another community group entered the building and walked straight onto the stage via a back entrance, hence joining us in the middle of a show. The audience thought it was hilarious. However, on a serious note, since the group started we have

raised in excess of £10,000 for various charities, some local, some national. With your help we hope to continue raising money from your generous participation in our raffles. So, let’s get back to the forth coming show. Rehearsals are becoming more serious as the cast have begun to put their scripts down and remember their lines. All are working hard and developing their characters. It’s a joy to see their facial expressions, reactions and mannerisms. Whilst the cast become more serious, it is easy to follow the plot, pick out your favourite character and try and predict what might happen. The title of the play is somewhat confusing, it is fast paced and hilarious and is sure to make you laugh. Be careful what you might find in your donuts and for all you keen gardeners out there, just take care when opening your shed doors, you never know what you might find. I say no more. You need to come along and see for yourself. Phill is working steadfastly on our scenery and Di is creating some wonderful costumes.

Come along and see for yourself.

So, dates for your diary: May 21st, 22nd and 23rd (evening)

Venue: Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane Birstall.

Tickets: £7 and £6 concession Box Office: 0794 879 6675 and 0116 266 1643

Severn Trent Grant

Buys New Workboat for Waterways Society

Melton & Oakham Waterways Society (MOWS) has taken delivery of a new workboat which has been paid for by a grant from the Severn Trent Community Fund.

The boat was launched at the MOWS maintenance compound and will be used in the society’s continuing efforts to maintain the Rivers Eye and Wreake.

MOWS was successful in applying for a grant from the Severn Trent Community Fund which supports local charities and community groups as part of a £10 million five-year project. The money is awarded for three elements of community wellbeing: people, places and environment.

The new 4.8 metres long boat has been built by local company JT Fabrications, based in Asfordby Business Park. It will replace the existing workboat Badger which is now 25 years old. Together with a new 6HP outboard engine and other fitments, it is costing £9,800 which has all been covered by the Severn Trent grant.

MOWS director for the project, Stuart Lock, said: “The new boat is very similar design to Badger which has seen sterling service but is now showing her age. The steel plates on the hull are getting thin and we did consider replacing them but it was going to cost as much as a new boat.

“The design of the new boat is very similar to Badger, which has proved ideal for working on the rivers, but we have made some enhancements for easier working. The new and bigger engine will also be a great addition. “We were getting worried about how long Badger and its very old engine would be able to carry on so we are

very grateful to the Severn Trent Community Fund for covering all the costs so we are able to carry on with our year-round work parties, keeping collecting rubbish and generally maintaining Melton’s lovely rivers.”

Sue Heyes, Community Fund Officer at Severn Trent, said: “We’re genuinely delighted that our panel selected the Melton and Oakham Waterways Society to receive this grant. Their teams of volunteers work tirelessly to conserve the truly beautiful waterways in the area.”

MOWS members are now engaged in painting the inside of the boat and other fitting out jobs before it can begin operations.

Among priority work in recent weeks has been removing fallen trees which have blocked the river so that it will be possible to begin offering trips aboard the group’s purpose-built narrowboat Wreake Voyager.

Citizens Advice

Charnwood Offers Advice on Managing Rising Costs and Debt

I’m worried about my debt and rising bills, and I want to know what support is available. Do you have any advice on managing rising costs and what to do if you fall into debt?

With energy, water and broadband bills on the rise, it’s getting increasingly difficult for many people to cover their expenses. It’s important to know you’re not alone in finding things difficult and that financial support might be available to help ease the burden.

Checking benefits eligibility

A significant number of eligible people don’t claim the benefits that are available to them, so it’s important to understand what you’re entitled to. You may be able to claim benefits if, for example, you’re at working age and on a low income, you’re sick or disabled, are of State Pension age with a low income or no income, or if you’re a carer. You can check the Citizens Advice website for information on what benefits you might be eligible for by visiting www.citizensadvice.org.uk and searching for Benefits or you can follow this link - https://www. citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/

benefits-introduction/what-benefitscan-i-get/ Reducing outgoings

If you claim benefits or are on a low income, you may be eligible for a reduction in Council Tax. Discounts can also be given to students, those living with a carer, or people who live alone, to name some examples. If you have children and claim certain benefits or are on a low income, you may qualify for free school meals, transport to school, or support with the cost of uniform.

Your local council may be able to help you pay for things like energy and water bills, food or other essential costs. This is called ‘welfare assistance' or the ‘Household Support Fund’. More information can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council‘s website - https://www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/cca_ financial or you can speak to one of our Advisers to help you find out what is available.

To reduce other expenses, you may be able to switch to a cheaper broadband deal, get a water meter fitted, or access discounted travel options. Find out more about ways to get help, including advice on saving money heating your home, on the Citizens Advice website.

Creating a budget and prioritising bills

If you’re finding it difficult to stay on top of bills, budgeting tools like the one on the MoneyHelper websitehttps://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en can be very useful in helping you understand what money you have coming in and going out each month. If you're behind on bills, you should prioritise paying rent, mortgage payments, Council Tax and energy bills, as these are known as 'priority' debts which have the most serious consequences if missed.

Once you’ve got priority debts under control, you should look at credit card or store card debts, missed Buy Now Pay Later payments or payday loans. Whatever debt you’re dealing with, it’s important to speak to the person or company you owe money to as early as you can. You could show them a copy of your budget to let them know what your financial situation is and then see if there are any steps you can take to start dealing with your debt.

Just remember, there’s lots of help out there and you’re not alone. If you feel you need support with this, ring our Local Enquiry line on 01509 649605 and ask to speak to one of our Advisers. Or you can get in touch with StepChange https://www. stepchange.org/. tel. 0800 138 111. They also provide free and nonjudgmental debt advice.

U3A Syston & District

Drift Away to a Desert Island, which is exactly what seventeen of us did when we chose one memorable song from a special period in our lives or one which linked back to a major event, which in many cases, changed our lives ! Barbara Sargeant, pictured below,

Flood Flood Glorious Flood

Nothing glorious going on round here folks, such a slow process, dryers still doing their thing in April, such a racket, it’s like a sauna in home (no fluffy white dressing gown and slippers though) the usage and the £ signs go up and up, we have to pay the leccy bill and then claim, ‘at some stage’ says our loss adjuster!!!!

Let’s take a stroll in those shoes again, but remember this time ‘not’ to touch those irreplaceable family photos in those beautiful frames, those favourite shoes and that expensive iPhone which lay by your chair!

adapted this long running radio programme and organised this event, ably assisted by Angie Baker for the benefit of U3A members.

Each piece of music had a backstory which was shared with all those present in true ‘Desert Island Disc’ style. Some reasons were very personal whilst others very poignant.

Luxury items and book choices included a novelty Hot Water Bottle, a guitar, ‘Wisden’s book of Cricket ‘and the ‘Oxford English Dictionary’ prompting much hilarity and an opportunity for lively conversation.

We sang, we danced and we ate cake, in fact a perfect morning.

This is just one of the many ideas for

Why because after a flood they and the chair you were sitting in last night are lost, lost and destined for the waste skip marked BER (beyond economical repair) they’re now covered in a brown grime (very likely contaminated with sewage, do you really want to risk touching) had enough don’t blame you, let us carry on with the tour!

Looking round home we now have walls taken back to their original brick work (never seen before) wallpaper hanging off here and there, wooden door trims ripped off, kitchen units out and under plastic sheeting for refitting (they’ll never survive the chaos) a toilet randomly sitting in the bedroom, with the large kitchen work top laying

one off experiences on offer to members. Whatever someone thinks of doing (Paddle Boarding and Segway are on my list) there usually is a way to do it.

All events are in addition to our regular group activities which range from learning to play Bridge to Yoga

Past events include, Tai Chi, Burlesque, Croquet, Jewellery making and many more to be arranged.

There is NO limit to the fun which can be enjoyed as a member of ‘Syston and District U3A’. Watch the YouTube video we made for more fun, visit our website, systonu3a.org.uk or phone 0300 102 1381 for more details about membership and current group activities.

in another room, the kitchen sink is buried in there under some plastic sheeting somewhere to, confused, we are ‘most of the time’, has anybody affected worked out which way is up yet, let us know?

There’s no logic to what’s been done work wise at ours, and yes they are behind with their rip-out schedule!! We cannot wait to smile and wave them off, (through gritted teeth) those who we inherited when making that insurance call, what then, putting our home back together if we can, or trusting it to another unknown team from wherever, another story for another time!

Dementia UK Craig ‘Chippy’ 72 Hour Running Challenge

Craig Reast, known as Craig Chippy or Chipstar, completed an epic challenge earlier this year – running three miles every three hours for three days to raise money for Dementia UK, in memory of his Dad.

Craig’s Dad went in to care in 2019 suffering with Dementia and sadly passed away in September 2024. To honour his memory Craig chose a running challenge to help raise funds and raise awareness for Dementia UK. Craig ‘Chippy’ only joined Wreake Runners in Syston about a month ago but has been running for a long time. He also ran the London Landmarks half marathon in April and set up a fundraising page with a target goal of £350. By the end of the challenge his page has received over £1,100 with hundreds more in cash offline to add to his total. His employer at Cedar Mews Care Home in Birstall has generously offered to match his fundraising too.

It was only a week before his challenge that he quietly mentioned it to someone at the running club and they suggested he should post it on the club Facebook group. As one of the clubs’ chosen charities this year, his clubmates were only too happy to support and the challenge quickly gathered momentum as it progressed.

Members were posting pictures of themselves with Craig every three hours – with some support even during the very tough and dark hours between 9pm and 6am each night. He was faced with every kind of weather and freezing temperatures. By mixing up his routes from Thurmaston, where he lives, to Syston, Watermead, Birstall and Bradgate Park meant he had more variety but less time to rest and refuel

in between each run, making it a little harder for himself. In total, Craig ran 75 miles over the 25 runs. He chose to run the last one alone with just him and his Dad. His first run began at Cedar Mews and he finished his last run there too, cheered on by colleagues and residents.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Their nurses, called Admiral Nurses provide lifechanging care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Dementia can be considered a lonely disease with lack of physical activity and depression also linked to the condition.

However the support shown to Craig during this challenge by his family, friends and clubmates helped to highlight that working together can overcome some of these factors and that people shouldn’t have to be alone during tough times.

If you are able to support Craig’s fundraising for Dementia, you can by visiting his Justgiving page https:// www.justgiving.com/page/c-d1721673253885?utm_ medium=FR&utm_source=CL

NEW BARKBY WI

Vice-President, Dawn Haynes, welcomes New Barkby members to the institute’s April meeting. Jerusalem was sung followed by business matters. Some members spoke of their recent visit to Leicestershire and Rutland Federation's Annual Council Meeting. This institute will celebrate its 100th birthday later this year and a certificate was collected by Alma Wright, from the Federation Chairman, Glenice Wignall.

Speaker for the evening was Ginnette Brookes, Dance Teacher, who gave members an insight into her work (starting dance lessons at aged four years). Now she talks of Dance Silver Swans (Adult Ballet), plus other dance forms and was assisted by friend, Katherine.

Under Ginnette’s guidance, there was an opportunity to identify different ballet music (e.g. BBC TV programme The Apprentice - Romeo and Juliet composed by Sergei Prokofiev). Then members learned various dance movements, with or without footwear, and not too many wobbles! See picture below courtesy of the New Barkby WI.

At the end of the session, everyone managed to make their own version of a curtsy, as a finale. All very informative and entertaining. After a question and answer period, the vote of thanks was offered by Dawn Haynes.

The competition winner was Valerie Cobb with a copy of a Ballet Music Book. The raffle prize was won by Gillian Weston.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday 7th May, 7.30pm, Syston Community Centre. This will be our Resolutions meeting. Visitors are always welcome.

Dear Editor

On April 1st I walked through the Peace Garden in Syston Park and was thrilled to find the Flowering Currant Allée in full bloom, looking and smelling just wonderful. The blossoms were in every available shade from white to a deep rosy pink. What a very ingenious and beautifully executed idea.

In my childhood the tennis courts were located in this area and the fragrance of the shrubs (like the scent of privet) rolled back the years.

The Bowling Green still looks immaculate; does anyone else remember Mrs Eva Garner of 47 High St Syston (a true old Victorian) cutting sandwiches for the Bowls Teas? She always said that her icecold hands made wonderful pastry which as a girl she had rolled out in the kitchens of Belvoir Castle.

Her husband Albert helped to build the Melton Road railway bridge before the Great War.

Best thanks and congratulations to all those who keep the Park looking so beautiful.
