Syston’s Busy Banding Syston Brass Band has been part of the local community for over 100 years and can trace it’s history back to the 1920’s basket weaving industry. In recent years, the band has gone from strength to strength with a number of good contest results followed by a bit of a rollercoaster ride up and down the competition sections (for those that don’t know competitive brass bands have sections, similar to football leagues!).

Currently back in the fourth section the band bounced back from the COVID lockdown with a resounding Christmas Concert performance to an appreciative audience and continued to build on the enthusiastic return to playing, preparing for the first contest performance for two years with energy and confidence.

In 2019, just a few months before COVID lockdown the band set up the Chris Moore Foundation Fund ‘Brass Kids’ Group (CMFF) a legacy of our former Principal Cornet who sadly passed away earlier that year. Chris’ wish was that young people should be able to benefit from the joy of music without financial barriers and

this is what CMFF has achieved.

Lessons continued over lockdown with a lot of our ‘Brass Kids’ growing up into talented young people before we knew it. Their first opportunity to play with the band was to take part in the Area competition in March and we are incredibly proud of them for their hard work and confident participation.

Famous Competition Success FRIDAY 10th JUNE saw the band travelling to take part in the famous WHIT FRIDAY BRASS BAND CONTESTS in Saddleworth (if you know you know – if you don’t, watch Brassed Off!). The band had been planning the trip for some time and decided to dress-up 1970’s Village People style and march along to YMCA. We all travelled up to Yorkshire early on Friday and booked into our hotel. After a delayed start due to traffic issues, we made our way to our first village of Lees. Our march to YMCA created a fabulous party atmosphere (check out the video

Grow Give Live Newly formed community group Grow Give Live will be at Syston Summer Fayre on 3rd September to share more information about their mission.

Plans for a community garden in Syston will be available to view, along with a seed swap, plant sales and children’s activities to join in with.

Grow Give Live have only been running for a short while, having been formed over a kitchen table during the pandemic.

Our vision is to create a community space in Syston where sustainability, community and well being are at the heart of everything we do. Through the shared goal of ‘growing our own’, we aim to encourage the community to get involved with the outdoors, learn about sustainable growing and living and discover how this can improve our mental and physical well being.

We have already made a small start, having become Station Adopters, and have planted up two boxes with ‘edibles’. When you’re passing through Syston station you may be lucky enough to find a ripe strawberry or two to pick and take home – make sure to wash them before you eat them! We hope to see you at the Syston Summer Fayre on 3rd September.

Wow! It was great to be back at The Old Chapel and to see so many friends, old and new, at our last play which we performed in May. ‘Lockdown in Little Grimley’, was written during the first lockdown by one of our favourite playwrights, David Tristram, and he asked groups who had staged his plays before if we would be interested. He didn’t have to ask me twice – I purchased it straight away and loved it as soon as I read it. The problem was the ‘timing’.

I got together with a group of interested actors in January, in fact we read three of this plays, but we all agreed that ‘Lockdown’ was the best.

But, if we were ever going to perform it, it had to be now – any later just wouldn’t work. So we started rehearsals at the beginning of February and the rest is history!

Our Annual General Meeting will have taken place by the time you read this and we have welcomed Kat Seddon on to the Committee; Kat was co-opted on to the Committee to look after our Marketing and Communications and we greatly value her experience and expertise in this role. We are also indebted to Jules Richards and Russell Webster who will be supporting her.

So now we are looking forward to our next production which will take place at the end of November. I have no idea yet what it will be but we shall do our best to bring you something which you will thoroughly enjoy and which will make you laugh.

Bobbin lace is a craft that is slowly seeing a revival along with other crafts such as knitting and dressmaking. As with most crafts, having someone to help you with the basics is a big help.

Bobbin lace classes are being held at Groby Village Hall, Leicester Road, Groby, LE6 0DQ on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. They are suitable for beginners and those with some knowledge.

April 2022 saw the start of a new Menopause Café for the ladies (and men!) of Syston and the surrounding areas.

After struggling to find information on local menopause groups, and realising that many women in the local area were also going through the same thing, I decided to pop a message out on Spotted:Syston to see if anyone fancied meeting me for a coffee to chat… the response was overwhelming and it showed the need for somewhere for local ladies to go to be able to talk openly about their worries, concerns and struggles…

Along came Dave Noseley from The Pharmacie Arms to offer us a room for free, every month for as long as we wanted – a fantastic offer and a brilliant location at the heart of our local community, we can’t thank him enough for being there... (and he came up with the ‘M’ Café name too!)

So each month, on the first Wednesday the ‘M’ Café meets upstairs at The Pharmacie Arms from 6.30pm – 8pm. We enjoy a cuppa and some cake, and more often than not, a relaxing glass of wine or two, and we simply enjoy the company of women (and sometimes their partners) who all understand how we feel. Ladies have come over from the other side of Leicester to attend, as well as many from the Melton area too, which shows just how much of a need there is…

We’ve featured in the Leicester Times, our local GP’s are now referring people to us, and we’ve even had a mention on Radio Leicester (thank you Fiona!) and most recently, you may have seen, our very own Syston K Banksy has supported us with a Menopause Café bollard in the centre of Syston, pictured above right, a fabulous creation depicting how we’re giving a

NEW BARKBY WI Local Motorcyclist Thanks NHS President Shirley Franklin welcomed New Barkby members, plus visitors from other institutes in the Leicestershire Soar Valley Group.

After a brief business period, plus the singing of ‘Jerusalem’, the speaker for the evening was Baroness Bolsover from Linda Holmes and ‘afternoon tea’.

With members bringing along their own cup, saucer, teaspoon and napkin, there were rules on etiquette and table manners, so having to sit upright and certainly no elbows on tables, there was then a chance to sip daintily the tea, with tea being poured into the cup, followed by milk. The teaspoon was then moved from front to back of the cup in a gentle way. Napkins had to be folded so that the crumbs from food could fall away easily from one’s clothes. Sandwiches and cakes were very small in portions, so that they could be held between a thumb and forefinger. Also there might be more than one tea party to attend, which might take place any time between 2.00pm and 7.00pm (before dinner or high tea at 8.00pm) Sometimes men were invited, probably seen as potential suitors for the ladies’ daughters!

The Baroness, in costume with a handbag to match, carried so-called ‘calling cards’ and invitations to her tea party and after her talk, she held a question and answer time before everyone enjoyed cups of tea and biscuits, provided by Kerstyn Fryman and Julie Malam.

The vote of thanks was given by Dawn Haynes, the competition winner was Valerie Cobb and the raffle was won by Chris Parker.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 3rd August at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm where The Laura Ashley Story will be told. Visitors are always welcome.

a full week and have raced motorcycles since 1970, in later years riding a 1934 Scott motorcycle, which I am taking to Belgium in mid July to take part in a racing event there. We have to extract all the juice out of the gift of every day.

In 2018, I was involved in a start line crash and sustained 13 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. I was taken to Nottingham Queens Hospital where a determined and skilful surgeon named Prof Chris Moran and his team spent 13 hours putting this 77 year old Humpty back together again. In basic terms, they removed the wreckage and built a titanium scaffold in my chest, then screwed the bits of rib bones to it in about their original place.

After hospital, I wrote a letter of thanks and had a reply from Prof Moran’s secretary, to say how pleasing it was to receive a letter of thanks from a patient, as this was a rare occurrence.

The lady asked if they could use my letter as a press release to help inform the general public of the services they provide to society.

Laetitia Loops I first started yarn art for the coming of Spring this year, after chatting with SKB, to be sure I had her blessing to decorate a part of Syston some distance from her own patch.

My themes often start from an old tune.

My second topper for my patch Roman Way, was for Easter, the tune was "In Your Easter Bonnet" from Easter Parade.

Then after Easter I heard that Cossington Secret Gardens was on again this year, after missing for a few years. It was always a lovely event, so I hoped it would be a surprise in time for the event and it stayed on the box long enough for the Jubilee celebrations the following weekend.

So the flowery bonnet was put on a bigger base with the addition of a Robin, inspired by another old tune, "In an English Country Garden".

Meanwhile someone, who turns out to be a lovely lady on a Facebook group, was asking if anyone could make a topper for her beloved George post box, so I offered to gift the hat if she felt they could rock a flowery bonnet! So minus the Robin, the topper now resides on Georgie in Surrey! (photo Sedina Agama).

I am pleased that this topper has been reused and enjoyed in three different locations and helps to keep my plastic footprint in check.

For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee I put up this one showng the Queen having tea with one of her beloved corgis.

My latest display is summer, inspired by more old tunes, "Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows" and "Here comes Summer".

This month club visit is a tad different to the previous ones. I am leaving Syston and travelling up to Thurmaston to pop into Marks and Spencer’s café for Sign Club. (Sign Club was initiated by myself so I might be a bit prejudiced about this club.) The club welcomes deaf and hearing individuals and allows people to brush up on their skills, with attendees encouraged to practice and learn to help bring the community together whilst enjoying food and drink at the M&S Café.

I’m usually working when Sign Club runs and try to join the conversations as much as possible, but this week I finished my shift early and could finally be a proper part of it all. I order Continues on page 8 my decaf latte

and instantly notice a different atmosphere in the café. It feels more vibrant in a way, more animated? I wonder if this is a result of having a club in or because I am now a customer instead of a Customer Advisor.

At the moment there are four members in our club and we start thinking about how to grow these numbers. One member suggests putting up flyers in neighbouring towns and plans are in place to make this happen and help grow the Sign Club.

During our time at the Sign Club we have a little tasting of treats from the In-Store Bakery. Time flies and before we know it the Café closes for the day. I have really enjoyed this afternoon and I know soon the Sign Club will grow. Sign Club runs every Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm and whether you stay for the full two hours or just for a cuppa, it would be lovely meeting you.

Classic Car Run

Local residents Terry Farmer and Vicki Friend aided by friends Mick Squire and Colin Readwin organised another of their car runs on Tuesday evening 21st June. This was called The Longest Day Evening Run for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

The evening was perfect for the run, warm and sunny. Several cars took advantage of the fact and turned up on the day, resulting in a total of 42 cars taking part. Everyone met, once

again, at Stonehurst Family Farm and Motor Museum thanks to the generosity of the owners. After admiring the assorted cars the drivers and their navigators set off to explore the ‘little lanes’ of Leicestershire before arriving at the destination, The Gate Hangs Well.

Once there they parked in the field and lined up for people to enjoy more conversation. Most enjoyed a drink and to sit out in the pleasant surroundings. Some had booked a light meal which was provided for them.

During the evening a cheque for £600 was presented to Gary Farnfield representing Rainbows, the result of a run organised on 24th April Drive It Day. It was a successful evening not only because the classic car owners were able to enjoy taking their vehicles out for a ‘spin’ but because it raised an amazing £800 for the Rainbow’s Hospice.

We now look forward to the 8th Annual Rainbows Run on Sunday 4th September, running from Stonehurst and finishing at the Nottingham Heritage Railway in Ruddington.

Social Club, Syston, for the current year, which is in its ninth year.

This dining event is run by Leicester College Supportive and Inclusive Learning Department and lead by Angela Belfield and Sue Arnold. They had 12 students learning work skills by devising the menus, costing, ordering and buying the food, plus having the food delivered to the club for the Friday morning. Then they don their uniforms to either work in the kitchen to prepare and cook or serve the meals to the customers. The service runs from 12noon to 1pm for customers. The students are there from 9.00am until 3.00pm.

This aspect of their course is to develop independent living and as well as running this weekly luncheon at the Social Club during term time, they also have a City Skills Cafe on Charles Street, which allows students to develop their work skills.

The reason they come to Syston to deliver this weekly luncheon during term time is that it gives the students an opportunity to develop independent travel skills, as they have to make their own way to the club. They have to bring their uniform and look after it between sessions, so helps to develop time management, as they have to arrive by a specific time. They learn how to work in a team, when to have breaks and importantly continue to work until the job is done, so no giving up as they have customers waiting for their meal.

The students do this aspect of their course for a full academic year and they all seemed to really enjoy meeting the

regular customers.

In talking to some of the customers they said they saw the young people change from being very quiet, introverted and not sure about asking customers for their order, to being confident and engaging in conversation with them. The diners all said that they really enjoyed the meals and miss the students over the summer when they leave to go on to other things.

The students said that they enjoy meeting the people who attend and although nervous at the start of the year, they have gained confidence and enjoy it. They said they will miss coming every week and seeing the regular customers.

The tutors said it takes the students a little while to understand the commitment of the day as they all have different and sometimes complex learning needs. But they do get a lot out of the experience as it is often the first time they have had to talk to people outside their own environment.

Tales From the Plot

This Month in the Garden

With Kate Hill A very old favourite flowering now is Agapanthus ‘Peter Pan’ which I bought over 25 years ago on a visit to RHS Wisley and, as its name suggests, it is not as tall as the deep blue varieties. The flowers are a pale sky blue with a deeper stripe down the centre.

I once tried planting it in the ground when it outgrew its pot but all I got was a mass of leaves but no flowers, so it was lifted and split into two pots and had flowered ever since. Each plant is split every few years with surplus plants passed onto friends and family. It is classed as one of the evergreen varieties although by the end of winter the foliage can look a bit the worse for wear, but the plants bounce back readily enough.

A few years ago I grew a couple of plants from seed just to see what colour the flowers would be, as they tend not to ‘come true’ to the parent plant. One does have the same blue flowers the other has white.

The lavateria plants I bought a couple of years ago are looking their best this month. They were sold as the patio variety ‘Barnsley Baby’ which should only grow to a maximum height of 4’6” (1.5m). However, one of the plants has deep pink blooms rather than pale pink so I don’t know what variety that is but never mind, they look good together and cutting them back in spring keeps them compact.

A perennial I wouldn’t want to be without is Gillenia trifoliata (also known as Bowman’s root). It may not be a showstopper, having delicate starry white flowers on reddish stems but it is an elegant plant and, as can be seen in the photo, it has red calyces which look like small berries once the flowers have finished. It prefers to be out of full sun so is useful for lighting up a semi-shaded area.

A friend and I visited the garden at Stoke Albany House, (LE16 8PT) which is open each year in June and July under the NGS yellow book open gardens scheme. The main flower border is beautifully colourcoordinated starting with yellow and orange flowers moving through red, purple, blue and pink. Each time I visit I marvel at the skill of whoever planned such a long border. It also has a serene white garden, a rose garden, vegetable patch and many interesting trees. It is well worth the £6 entry fee which goes to charities supported by the National Garden Scheme.

August is a time of plenty and it’s been a good year so far. We have spent the last six months setting seeds and planting out now we are harvesting and reaping the rewards of our labours. The peas and broad beans are all harvested and in the deep freeze. It’s been a good year for strawberries, half of our crop was consumed with cream or ice cream or added to morning cereal, the rest made into jam to be enjoyed throughout the rest of the year, a similar practice is being carried out with the raspberries.

Potatoes, cauliflower, cabbages, French and runner beans, carrots etc all being harvested as needed - however you can still sow lots of crops in August, for harvests into autumn and beyond.

If you want fresh new potatoes on the dinner table on Christmas Day now is the last chance to set them, I have learnt this from previous experience. If later than August they will not have time to mature before the cold weather comes back.

Prepare to lift onions towards the end of the month, wait until the tops begin to fall over as this indicates that the bulb has stopped swelling, dry them before ‘stringing’ and putting into store and these bulbs will then keep until next March.

The apples and pears will soon begin to colour up along with plums and damsons being in full flow so harvest regularly, hopefully the late fruiting raspberries will be cropping well by now.

Make the last of any outdoor sowings to provide a late harvest for this season, radishes and lettuce will still produce a crop.

The end of this month signals the time to begin summer pruning of your apple and pear trees (those grown as cordons, espaliers or fans, for trees and bushes,

leave these until the winter to prune). The purpose of summer pruning is to encourage the development of fruit buds for next summer.

August is definitely the last month to prune stone fruit trees (plum, apricot, cherry and peach), and of course as always keep hoeing those weeds. I find it quite remarkable that it doesn’t matter how much care you give to your vegetable plants the weeds grow faster and more often than not look healthier!

Roundhill Pre-school Closes After 48 Years

Help is at Hand

Ann Davies, presenter on East Midlands Today officially opened the event and spent about two hours talking to all the exhibitors and visitors alike.

There were lots of selfies being taken with her. She is a really lovely person and gave time to everyone who wanted to talk to her.

There were 33 exhibitors made up of organisations from in or around Syston who provide a wide range of services to people in our community. Syston Band provided the music for the event.

The event came about after the profits from the sale of SKB calendars 2022, provided the charity with enough funds to hire a very large marquee and invite as many different

Syston and District Volunteer Centre organised this event on Saturday 9th July and what a successful day it was too.

On Friday 1st July, the staff and children at Roundhill pre-school had a party to mark the end of an era, our picture shows Paul, the Children’s entertainer.

Roundhill pre-school has been running for 48 years and has been a well established pre-school with parents bringing their children here not just from Syston and Thurmaston but further other villages including Rothley due to its reputation and caring staff.

Jean Ford retired on that day too, but this wasn’t the reason for the closure of the pre-school, she has been told that the lease had come to an end and no agreement could be made between

Leicestershire County Council and the Trust.

Jean and her team wanted to thank everyone who has used the pre-school over the years and wishes the children well in the future. All the team have found employment either in the trust or elsewhere.

It is hoped that this new venture can be built upon by the charity and help bring together all these range of services into a community hub.

We finally made our way to our last village of Denshaw at 10.20pm exhausted and a little merry, we played our competition march Under the Double Eagle and won the first prize in the Third Section achieving Syston Band’s first every trophy at the WHIT FRIDAY COMPETITION and a very good time was had by all.

A more recent addition to Syston’s band community is Syston Swing Band, the band’s first ever performance was at Syston Social Club in June 2017 and with a year out in 2020, so far the band has only had three years to build it’s reputation of a lively, entertaining, enthusiastic group of musicians. The band has a packed diary this year of local bookings and was very excited to be asked to take part in the Great Central Railway Jubilee weekend event.

Celebrating the Jubilee A few musicians play for both the Brass Band and the Swing Band which led to an extremely busy weekend over the Jubilee with four events between the two bands over the bank holiday and weekend.

Thursday – the Swing Band enjoyed playing to a lively audience to end the first day of events at the Great Central Railway. We were very excited to have The Queen and Churchill as part of our audience!!

Saturday – A small group of players from the Brass Band played at the Riverside Festival, Soar Point to a very enthusiastic participative audience and we felt very much appreciated.

Sunday – A small group of Brass Band players played at Thurmaston for a Jubilee lunch, again to an appreciative audience.

Sunday PM – The Swing Band relocated indoors due to the weather made the best of it by squeezing into the Queen Victoria Pub Restaurant to finish off the weekend locally in swinging style!

We are extremely grateful to our local community businesses for offers of help in recovering from lockdown. Huge thanks to our local clubs, Syston Conservative Club, Syston Brookside Club and Syston Social Club for their support in allowing us to use their premises free of charge for rehearsals.

We also appreciate the support from our local council as we discuss plans for longer term facilities for our vast amount of equipment and more appropriate facilities to ensure our bands stay a lively part of our community as they are now for many years to come.

Dear Editor, I was disappointed to see another letter attacking doctors in your paper July 2022. A letter just a few months ago discussed GPs ‘not seeing patients’.

It feels as though at best there is a lack of understanding of the challenges faced by practice staff and at worst a vendetta against GPs. GPs are expected to see more patients, with more complex medical conditions (which are deteriorating due to secondary care waiting times), in a shorter time.

Receptionists are abused to a shameful extent and as a health care worker, we have had to call the police twice in recent months due to the voracity of the abuse leveled at my colleagues.

Blame politicians for GP issues not those desperately trying to keep practices open in the face of sickness, early retirement and real-term funding cuts.

I couldn’t agree more with the letter deploring the felling of the two beautiful and healthy trees on Brookside.

There used to be the most wonderful prospect from the Melton Road bridge looking down the brook towards Broad Street. In every season there was a changing vista of branches, leaves and reflections in the water which often made old Syston look like some exotic continental city: Paris, Amsterdam or Bruges...

This is now spoiled and changed. One half of the spectacle is missing. As trees grow slowly it won’t be put right in our time.

See left my photo of Brookside taken at the beginning of July: looking lovely but lopsided - this summer since the tree felling.

In earlier years, the foliage met in a magnificent canopy over the water.

And as your other correspondent adroitly notes: what is being done about the supposedly tree-damaged pavement? It seems that those trees died for nothing at all.

What a shame and a pity.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News The parish church of St Peter and St Paul holds its regular services on Wednesday mornings at 9.30 and Sundays at 10am.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church celebrated it’s patronal day on the 29th June. The Patronal Day is when the church remembers the Saint – in our case Saints – to which the church is dedicated. St Peter and St Paul are remembered together in as much that Paul visited Peter when he was imprisoned in Rome.

Our Church School Academy – named after the saints – was remembered with Reverend Biddy during their weekly assembly. The children were excited to learn about St and St Paul and even more thrilled to realise that they wore the symbols of both saints near their hearts on their school badges. The keys for St Peter and the sword for St Paul.

We are hosting a Summer Day Retreat in Barkby on the 13th August 2022. If you have never been on a retreat, you may feel a bit unsure about signing up, the day is intended to be a time of rest and relaxation, space to unwind and, perhaps, to re-assess where you are in life and in your relationship to God. The choir is now performing under the direction of a new Director, Simon Lubkowski who had organised the wide spread of music including sacred music, popular classics, modern pop, with plenty that were possible to sing along to.

There were two organ solos played by Ron Berry Sortie in E Flat by Louis Lefebure-Wely and Crown Imperial by William Walton. Simon also performed two solos Flow My Tears by John Dowland and At Last by Etta James.

There was a raffle arranged and that, with the sale of refreshments and a retiring collection, meant well over £500 was raised for church funds and a good time was had by all!

Help At Hand It was great to be able to be a part of this wonderful event on 9th July in Central Park. The beautiful weather was a real bonus as we took the opportunity to meet with people and have a chat, and share God’s love with members of the community and beyond.

Praise in the Park Following the success of this event last year we are holding it again this year.

Sunday 21st August at 3pm meet in the Sundial area for praise together.

The Ukulele band has kindly agreed to accompany this. Bring your own chair and refreshments and look forward to some enjoyment!

Governors play a vital role in helping to shape the strategic direction of the school, they work with senior members of staff to inform and help shape the decisions that we take.

Our Local Advisory board has governors from a range of backgrounds, and that diversity is important in ensuring that we have a full range of views and experience when taking decisions. To strengthen the current team of governors the Local Advisory Board are particularly seeking to appoint governors ideally who have strategic planning or previous experience of being a board member either in another sector or in another school/academy. Governors will however consider all applications

made from members of the community who are prepared to undertake the necessary training and development to become an effective governor.

The commitment for governor work currently equates to an average of four meetings across the year during term time. Meetings usually last around two hours with additional time required prior to the meeting for preparation. Governors are expected to visit the schools during the working day at least once a year and ideally once each term. Governors are also required to undertake training to continuously develop and maintain their skills and keep up to date with governing practice.

The role of governors and Local Advisory Boards has changed dramatically in recent years, so we have put together some information on our website, to give you an overview of what the role involves.

The Hub to Re-Open Syston Methodist Church is reopening the Hub! The community café at the Hub (on the corner of High Street and Upper Church Street in Syston) was forced to close during the global coronavirus pandemic.

The removal of restrictions has enabled the management committee to rethink how the space can be best used in the future. Although the café was very popular, it became increasingly difficult to continue to run and staff it using the existing model with volunteers. We have decided to reopen in September as the ‘Meeting Place at the Hub’.

The room can accommodate small groups for meetings and activities Monday – Friday and can be booked now by calling Sue on 0772 411 8494 who can provide more information.

Although food and drink will not be available, hirers will be able to bring their own refreshments and use the kettle, crockery and cutlery available. We look forward to hearing from you.

Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association (LRYSA) Memorial race for Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association’s John Buckingham Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association (LRYSA) held a special racing event on Saturday 25th June in memory of its joint founder John Buckingham John died earlier this year and the event will be held annually in his memory. John and others began the association in 1967 to help to make sailing accessible and affordable to all children.

Since then the organisation, which is a charity, has grown and flourished, teaching disabled and disadvantaged children as well as schools cadet groups. It also has a Leicestershire youth racing team, the only team to represent Leicestershire all over the UK. Jill Magee from LRYSA said: “John was a huge promoter of all sports in Leicestershire especially sailing and will be missed by all of us. The club began the day with its Mayor’s Trophy Regatta for children and in the afternoon the adults raced in the John Buckingham Memorial Race.

In strong winds and sunshine the adults completed the race with some capsizes and some returned to shore. The winner out of those that persevered was Stuart Smith, one of LRYSA’s instructors, with Brett Haywood second and Steve Smith third.

The shield was presented to Stuart by Helen Buckingham, John’s widow, who came with John’s children and grandchildren and joined everyone else on the water.

Watermead Challenge

The Dunelm Watermead Challenge took place on 5th July. Over 315 runners ran a fast and flat five mile run through the wonderful backdrop of Watermead Country Park.

The race was organised by volunteers at the Rotary Club of Wreake Valley and supports charities. At the time of going to print the Rotary Club had not confirmed which charities would be supported this year. Following the success of the Watermead Country Park parkrun (which

was inspired by the Watermead Challenge), some funds have been diverted to make a modest donation to the set-up of the new Watermead Junior parkrun.

Dave Snutch was the Race Director for the 2022 event, ably assisted by Assistant Race Directors Mel Snutch and Daniel Burns.

He said, “This year’s Watermead Challenge was once again sponsored by Dunelm. Thank you so much and we look forward to an ongoing relationship. We’d also like to thank the park rangers who always support running events. They do a marvellous job and often go above and beyond”.

Everyone was back safe and sound with no casualties. Only one participant did not complete the course, he was recovering from Covid-19.

As always, the support and quality of the marshalling around the course was excellent - provided by the Rotary Club, Birstall Running Club and the headline sponsors, Dunelm.

Thanks also go to Trailmed (www.trailmed.co.uk), based in Syston for providing first aid cover.

Course record Local long-distance runner, Gemma Steel, completed the Watermead Challenge in 26 minutes and 33 seconds.

Looking back at the last 12 years of records, it is believed that Gemma now holds the course record.

June proved to be a cruel month for Syston Town’s push for promotion to the Premier League. Despite wins against Enderby and Kibworth 2nd XI the matches against Barkby and Leicester Ivanhoe fell foul of the weather. Syston racked up 230-2 against Enderby with Umar Razzaq unbeaten on 87 and Mo Salejee (pictured) hitting 72. Bilal Pardesi with 3-8 was the pick of the bowlers as Enderby finished on 211-7. Mo Salejee also starred in the match at Kibworth reaching his maiden century as Syston chased 174 to win by seven wickets. Syston now lie second in the league as Cropston managed to dodge the weather and complete a game more. In the County Cup, Syston hosted Shree Sanatan in what proved to be one of the matches of the season. Syston made 218 in their 40 overs with Liam O’Farrell hitting 87 and Charlie Taylor 51. Shree Sanatan made a splendid effort to get the runs before Mo Salejee (4-28) broke through and Shree Sanatan finished just three runs short on 215-9.

Without a win so far this season the 2nd XI, were set a target of 221 by Barkby 2nd XI but despite Ketan Dudharejia (38) and Kishan Dattani (34) battling hard they were dismissed for just 150. They also lost in agonising fashion to Kibworth 3rd XI in a match they really should have won. Kibworth were bowled out for 200 with Sarabjeet Singh bowling splendidly to take 4-44. With Yash Kapdi making 38 and Henry Whait 34, Syston looked to be well on track but wickets began to fall and Syston were all out 13 runs short of their target. The team’s first win of the season finally arrived against Leicester University Staff. A much strengthened team dismissed the opposition for only 101 with Umar Razzaq taking 4-12 and they

knocked off the runs for a comfortable victory by six wickets.

The Sunday XI, after five victories in a row went down to successive defeats by Barky and Wreake Nomads. Syston could only manage 108 against Barkby who knocked off the runs with just one wicket down. They did manage to set a competitive target of 182-7 against Wreake Nomads with Abrar Pathan making 77 and Paddy Oakman 43.

However, Wreake Nomads knocked off the runs for victory by six wickets despite a good bowling spell by Amar Supra who took 2-36.
