Syston Commemorates D-Day 80 Years On

On Thursday 6th June, The Royal British Legion (RBL) assisted by Syston Town Council (STC) organised an event on Central Park. The weather was kind and people started arriving around 6pm to find a small fair provided by Billy Bates and some stalls still being set up.

An enactment group arrived with a vintage jeep and looked the part. One poignant moment was when Dennis North’s family laid flowers on his commemorative bench facing the Memorial. Dennis was awarded with the Ordre De La Legion d’Honneur in 2019 for his service on board ship in the D-day landings, he was the Helmsman on HMS Vivacious a minesweeper, his ship made numerous crossing of the channel taking men and materials to the French coast, finally escorting the Mulberry Harbour. The Syston Band performed at 7.00pm, followed at 8.00pm by Sarah Clarke Syston RBL’s official singer who sang some songs from the period, which were enjoyed by many, she even sang a song or two on the jeep.

Around the same time the RBL Riders arrived and parked up next to the RBL gazebos which housed information about D-day, including a newspaper from the time and a map showing the beaches. Paul Baxter had made a model of the one of the beaches to give people an idea of what took place, see image on page 2. A lot of SKB’s toppers that have

“Talking to the RBL Riders, pictured above, was my favourite thing to do for the Stn. It was an honour to learn so much about what they do and why they do it and their bikes were an absolute spectacle and to photograph them myself for the Stn and for my own portfolio was so exciting. The gazebo which housed the information about D-Day was incredible to look at and the newspaper clipping from the very day was a donation to the RBL that someone had kept in perfect condition, so that was in itself, a beautiful thing to look at, the model of one of the beaches really opened my eyes to the idea of how those beaches looked.” says Stn PA, Deanna Johnson

the Chairman of Syston Town Council, Cllr John Lucas. The Lord Lieutenant gave the tribute at 9.00pm and lit a lantern for peace, see our picture left, after which he and everyone moved to surround the square cordon around the lantern, which when unlit belayed its beauty.

The Syston Army Cadets were on parade, pictured above, and the enactment group provided four men to stand on the corners of the boundary. The RBL Riders along with members of the public stood in silence while veteran Paul Baxter RBL Lit the beacon, pictured above

The event as a whole was lovely to see and it was so nice to see the community come together in the sunshine to remember those who sacrificed their lives and it was amazing to talk to so many people

with so many stories.

July marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Tracy’s at Syston Unisex Hair Salon, and staff and clients alike believe this to be an achievement worthy of a mention! Tracy Harrison began her career in hairdressing at the young age of 12, working at Susan Rose on Melton Road as a “Saturday girl”. Even in those early days, Tracy saw her future being in hairdressing and pursued her training and qualifications with excitement. Working a salon based role and later offering a mobile service, gave her the confidence and the experience she needed, and in 1999, took the plunge and signed the paperwork for 79 College Road, Syston! Moving her family into the flat above the salon, she and her husband Julian, began the hard work of getting the salon ready to welcome its first clients, and Tracy hasn’t looked back since.

In her time as lead stylist and business owner, Tracy has provided employment to countless staff, several of whom have gone on to run and own their own businesses, and the salon has played an important part in the lives of many ladies and gents, particularly those who enjoy weekly or fortnightly appointments.

Tracy has prided herself on ensuring the salon offers a welcoming, friendly atmosphere - one that offers that “home from home” feeling - to both new and long-standing clients. We even have customers now, who have been having their hair done by Tracy since long before she owned the salon!

She has offered kind words, great advice, hugs and hot chocolates to so many clients that she now calls her friends. She has seen them, and her staff, through births, bereavements, marriages, divorces, ill health and so much more. You’d be surprised at the medical know-how she’s picked up along the way!

As a mum to Tania and Molly, and a Nana to five granddaughters, Tracy has certainly ensured that we all feel part of her family and the working atmosphere she provides for us couldn’t possibly be replicated anywhere else.

On behalf of us all, thank you Tracy for your dedication, for working so hard and for being there for us all. And of course, for great hair!

Jas, Rhia & Sarah

Congratulations! Tracy from all of us here at Stn

Annual Ride+Stride Event to Help Raise Funds for LeicesterShire

Historic Churches Trust on 60th Anniversary

The LeicesterShire Historic Churches Trust is encouraging people to sign up to take part in Ride+Stride on Saturday 14th September, the annual fundraising event that helps raise money for repairs and improvements to historic churches, chapels and meeting houses throughout Leicester and Leicestershire.

Taking place on Saturday 14th September 2024, Ride+Stride is a Church Open Day and a sponsored event for cyclists, walkers, joggers, runners, horse-riders and mobility scooter drivers. People can also be

sponsored as a welcomer on duty in a church.

The Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and is hoping to exceed the £37,253 raised through the 2023 edition of Ride+Stride.

50% of sponsorship money goes to the church or chapel chosen by participants, with the other 50% going to the Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust. The Trust uses its share of the funds raised for grants to churches and chapels for repair, restoration and improvement projects.

Participants plan their own route (which may cross county borders) using the List of Churches and Chapels that are intending to open on the day. This will be uploaded to the LHCT website in August. Riders and Striders can ask relations, friends and colleagues to sponsor them. This could be in the form of a particular amount for each church or chapel they visit between 10.00am and 6.00pm on the day, or a lump sum. This is recorded on a sponsor form and interested parties can take part for as long or short a time, within the day, as is convenient for them. “Ride+Stride offers a great opportunity to not only take in some of the incredible church buildings and chapels we have here in

Leicestershire, but to also raise funds to help repair and preserve those in need of support,” said Janet Arthur MBE, Chair of LHCT. “The total money raised in 2023 was a 7.5% increase on 2022, and a great way to mark the Trust’s 60th anniversary in 2024 would be to have as many people as possible take part in Ride+Stride this year to raise more than £40,000 this year!”

For more information and to sign your church up for Ride+Stride, please visit www.lhct.org.uk/ride-and-stride.

Tales from the Plot

Every year nature, climate and wildlife throw a curveball - there’s always somethingto do battle with, we’ve had what has felt like a cold and wet beginning to this year. The slug and snail populations seem to have boomed and the pigeons seem more abundant than ever before, these uninvited guests on the allotments have wreaked havoc. This year sadly my pea plants were totally destroyed along with some cauliflower and cabbage plants that weren’t covered with mesh - however there have been some successes, my strawberry crop has been so far rather good and broad beans have done very well, see image above. I’ve given them a couple of sprays with neem oil and it seems to have kept the blackfly at bay.

July is the time when we should start to see the fruits of our labours, the first raspberries and my favourite, the first new potatoes, boiled with fresh mint and with a knob of butter, just lovely. I'm hoping for a great potato crop this year as the wet conditions should suit them. I grow the majority of my potatoes in 30 ltr tubs. The first half a dozen tubs I harvest I replace the compost and replant usually with Charlotte new potatoes. These will be ready, if all goes well and they’re kept sheltered, to harvest for the Christmas celebrations. You do not get a large crop but what you get is lovely. I promise you it is worth the effort.

There’s still plenty to be done as the weeds continue to grow so regular hoeing is still essential. Onions seem to be well so far, fingers crossed and touching wood, they’re all under netting, leeks are all in also under netting to try and dodge Alium Leaf Miner. It lays its eggs in the stem that go on to eat the inside of the onion, this pest only reached our shores a few years ago. I'm now told it has reached the highlands of Scotland. There'sno real cure, just grow on under netting, it just feels like the whole of my plot needs to be netted LOL.

I’ve planted Brussels early this year as last year they failed to make a substantial enough size for Christmas and they are looking quite good, although I have been growing them also under netting. July is normally quite dry so watering shallow rooted plants is also still necessary, mulching with old grass cuttings and leaves helps enormously plus it’s the time to start thinking of winter produce.

So many people have an allotmentand tend it really well but come the end of October there is not a lot left to harvest. July is the time to plant winter crops that will see you in to the next year. My purple sprouting broccoli is already in and will not be harvested until March/April. Winter cabbage and cauliflowers can also be planted at this time, now is also a good time to plant carrots with the hope of dodging the dreadful carrot fly - there’s an awful lot going on! Citizens Advice Charnwood

Citizens Advice Charnwood advises on steps to take when getting building work, renovations or repairs done to your home by outside contractors.

“I’ve just had my bathroom re-tiled, but I’m not happy with the work. At first, things seemed to be going well, but then the tradesperson left to do another job and I had to chase them for updates. They did eventually come back and finish the job, but the work was pretty rough around the edges. They also left all the old tiles and plaster for me to dispose of, which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve now got the invoice, but I don’t think the price reflects the work done or the service I got. Can I challenge this?”

You mention that the job looked “rough round the edges”, if this is to a degree that you could consider the job unfinished or unsafe, you should be able to get the tradesperson to come back to fix it. You could also suggest removing the old tiles might be considered as part of finishing the job.

If the tradesperson considers the work complete, it’s worth knowing you’re protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which says they should have completed the work with

‘reasonable care and skill’. If they haven’t done this, they’ve broken the law. The Act means you’re legally entitled to ask the tradesperson to fix the problem (if they provided the tiles as well as the service) or get money refunded (if they just provided the service and you bought the tiles). They should fix the problem or refund you in a reasonable amount of time, without causing too much inconvenience. As you’ve received the invoice for the work but not paid yet, now would be a good time to ask them to fix the issue or you can negotiate a lower price for the work. Let the tradesperson know you understand what you’re entitled to. Speak to them in person, or contact them in writing or by email -there are template letters on the Citizens Advice website to help with thishttps://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ consumer/template-letters/letters

Either way make sure you have a written copy of anything agreed. Before you contact them, it’s a good idea to take photographs to use as evidence of the problem. Make notes about what happened, including dates and times. You should also gather any paperwork and receiptswas there any prior written agreement about who would dispose of the old tiles?

If you’re struggling to come to an

agreement with the tradesperson there are other steps you can take to solve your problem. These include using ‘alternative dispute resolution’, which is a way of solving disagreements without going to court. Remember, there are certain steps you can take before you have the work done that should help you avoid problems.

- Get several quotes;

- Check the tradesperson has appropriate insurance in place;

- Get a written contract;

- If you pay a deposit pay by card and make sure you get a receipt.

- Don’t pay for everything up front in case the tradesperson doesn’t turn up.

From Syston to Success: Katie Canham’s Inspiring Journey

Readers of Syston Town News may remember Katie Canham, a student who started her writing journey a couple of years ago with Stn. Today, Katie is excited to share her incredible growth and passion for journalism since attending University, reflecting on a transformative experience that has shaped her a confident and skilled professional.

Having just completed her second year at Sheffield Hallam University, Katie cannot believe the remarkable change she has undergone since leaving Bradgate Sixth Form. Her course in Journalism with Public Relations and Media has opened doors to thrilling opportunities, allowing her to refine her skills and boost her confidence. From working with multiple clients to enhance their clientele, to producing radio broadcasts and mastering various aspects of radio production, Katie has embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. One challenge that she overcame with ease was when she produced a radio piece on how important it is for the elderly to participate in activities; this resulted in interviewing the Syston Ukulele band and uncovering why they chose to play an instrument and what it does for their mental health.

One standout moment in her journey was uncovering an untold story in Sheffield. Katie interviewed the Sheffield Hallam

Men’s Lacrosse team and wrote a heartwarming article about their dedication to walking 60km to raise money for James Place, all during severe snow conditions. This opportunity allowed her to showcase her storytelling abilities and highlight the inspiring efforts of her peers.

Recently, Katie secured a placement position as Events and PR Assistant with

the Blend Family and attended the launch of Cambridge Street Collective, labelled as ‘Europe’s biggest’ food hall, featuring over 20 cuisines. Attending this event on her own was a significant milestone for Katie, a testament to the confidence and independence she has developed since her younger years.

Katie’s journey does not stop there. She also completed work experience with Leicester’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NHIR), where she applied her skills in writing press releases, crafting short news stories, participating in team meetings, and creating social media content. Alongside her University studies, she has taken up tutoring GCSE students in English Literature Poetry, further showcasing her dedication to helping others succeed. Reflecting on her journey, Katie expresses deep gratitude to those who have supported her along the way. She extends a heartfelt thank you to Fiona Henry, owner of STN, for providing her with the opportunity to work with her during her A Levels. “Without Fiona’s reassurance and skill, I am confident I would not be where I am today,” Katie says. “Working with Fiona sparked my passion for journalism and PR, and for that, I will be forever grateful.”

Katie’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and the support of mentors. Her message to others is clear: if you are passionate enough about something, with a bit of hard work, anything is achievable. As Katie continues her journey, she remains a shining Continues on page 12

Syston Neighbourhood Mental Health Café

We’ve been open since June 23 and have so far supported around 500 people from Syston & the surrounding areas…

Wow, what a busy few months for the Syston Neighbourhood Mental Health Café!

The Café continues to provide local support to surrounding areas, so far, nearly 500 people have walked through our doors, whether it be in our social area, simply for a chat & a cuppa, or in our 1:2:1 area for more intensive support.

Due to how busy our earlier sessions were becoming, we’ve now increased our opening times, not only do we run from 12pm to 3pm, we now also open from 3.30pm to 6.30pm which means that attendees can pop along later in the afternoon when it’s a little quieter if they prefer. We’ve also had to move into a larger room as we didn’t have enough space for attendees, a telling sign of how necessary the café is and how local support is much needed. Whilst our social area continues to thrive with new games & puzzles introduced every couple of weeks, our 1:2:1 area is also seeing a large increase in the number of people needing face to face, immediate support. Our Mental Health First Aid

trained staff are able to guide attendees to other Mental Health services available to them 24/7, along with offering local voluntary, community and social services who can help to support with practical advice and information.

We also have a great team of volunteers who have made a real difference in our social area – Gillian, Bev, Charlotte, Mitchell and Jenny are fantastic additions to our team, they greet attendees at the door and make sure they feel welcome, helping them to find a seat, providing drinks and chatting to find out their reason for attending, a great way of ‘triaging’ each attendee so that we know how best to help them. They all have fantastic local knowledge and have been amazing at making attendees feel listened to and supported.

Our fabulous coffee connect van continues to provide free high quality barista coffee, tea and hot chocolate to attendees with the addition of our new iced coffees when the sun shines –Scott, our fabulous barista is ready to make more of these as the Summer months approach (we hope!)

As well as serving our attendees with amazing coffees, Scott is also a brilliant musician, it was a real treat at the café recently to have him play digeridoo, Vietnamese mouth harp and Navaho Indian flutes, which brought a relaxing, calming feel to the social area & everyone loved it!”

Loved ones are helpful and supportive right now, especially your partner. Good communication and expression between you is the key – as you further discover and explore! Work is enjoyable and colleagues go out of their way to ensure that you get everything done. Your finances are ‘grim' but just give this some time.

PISCES Feb 18 - March 19

You continue to concentrate on work –which you have done for quite a while now – and yet you are also contemplating your dreams! For you know, ultimately, that your plans are indeed viable and this inspires you to keep on going. A new emotional link comes whilst pursuing a hobby or interest. An old friendship ends.

‘Dead Wicked’ All was revealed in May when we brought our latest amateur theatre production to The Old Chapel in Syston. We were thrilled to see packed audiences on the edge of their seats with our two deadly one-act plays, which brought suspense, drama, and a touch of the unexpected!

Things literally started with a bang with our first act, ‘Bang You’re Dead’, by Paul Reakes. Tension mounted and secrets unravelled as the story unfolded, with twists and turns that kept everyone guessing until the very last minute.

We were proud to present ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’, a play crafted exclusively for QT by yours truly. The audience were transported into the backstage world of a West End theatre during a run of Shakespeare’s theatrical masterpiece, ‘Macbeth’. What unfurls is a world of intrigue and mystery, where every backstage shadow holds a secret, theatrical superstitions become the norm, and every stage whisper carries a warning. Those who came to see the show know whodunnit. If you missed out on the drama this time, or would just like to see our Dead Wicked Season again, you can find photos and video footage from our performance on our website, www.qttheatregp.co.uk

Huge thanks to a killer line-up of cast and crew who brought these deadly plays to life:

A special thank you goes to our Chair, and resident Director, Jude Latham, for entrusting me at the helm this time around. I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring these tales to life on our small stage and hope to be invited back again soon.

It takes an army of people to stage a theatre production and some extra thanks go to Sally Portsmouth for the use of the chapel and ongoing support to Syston QT Theatre Group; friends of QT for front-of house duties; Dorothy Surtees for phone ticket sales; and the families of our cast and crew who supported with learning lines and putting up with the many hours we gave up to put this production on.

And lastly, the biggest thank you of all goes to our amazing audiences who came to see our Dead Wicked Season – loyal supporters as well as new faces – who joined in with the mystery and intrigue. I hope you enjoyed the show and left with hearts racing and minds buzzing!

After all that drama, the QTs are taking a well-earned mini-break, before getting ready for our November production in the summer – keep your eyes peeled for more details! If you’d like to get involved in the drama – be it on stage, backstage, or front-of-house, and everything in-between – we’d love to hear from you! We’re always looking for new members to join our friendly group. Find out more about us at www.qttheatregp.co.uk, follow us on Facebook Syston QT Theatre Group and on Instagram systonqttheatre or email us at qtsyston@gmail.com Don’t forget to join our mailing list to be the first to hear all the news on the QT!

The Environment Agency’s Organised Walk along Barkby Brook

estates.

On Friday 7th June, a group of representatives from the Environment Agency (EA), Leicestershire County Council (LCC), Charnwood Borough Council (CBC), Syston Town Council (STC), Syston Flood Wardens and Syston Community Flood Group (SCFG), met on Barkby Road near the entrance to the public footpath that runs between the Exton and Blackfriars estates. See our photograph above.

The walk began by looking at the Sustainable Drainage System (SuDs) behind Blackfriars, which is designed to direct water along the stones and out to the Barkby Brook, with the green area acting as a soak away.

Although it looks as if it is working as designed CBC are going to find out who is responsible for maintaining it. The stretch of land that includes the footpath from Barkby road between the Blackfriar’s and Exton/Whissendene estates which hasn’t been maintained was acknowledged by the CBC representative that it hadn’t been on their maintenance schedule but it would be added now, they apologised for this error on their part.

As the party walked along this footpath to where the entrance from Whissendene should be, it is currently closed off due to the bridge being repaired.

There was a lot of interest into why no water was in the man-made gully, that should take the run off water from the Empingham Way estate and Whissendene before making its way into a balancing pond, behind Ruskin Ave/St Hilda’s which is supposed to collect the run off water from the

Once they arrived at the balancing pond which is very overgrown and with very little water being held in it. This pond was installed to hold water back to prevent Syston from flooding. When arriving at the Barkby Brook two outlets were found to have been vandalised and the metal closures were not there, see image below left, this would mean any water going into the SuDs, or the balancing pond would not be slowly released into the Barkby Brook, it would just flow unrestricted.

The agencies again said they would investigate these and repairs would be made.

At the same place a large tree is laying in the brook causing a blockage, see image below.

The party moved on to the bridge on Pembroke Avenue and the CBC representative said they are the riparian owner of the brook alongside Deville park and do have access to the brook for maintenance. They then visited the bridge on College Road, see image below.

The representative from LCC explained that all road bridges are maintained by LCC highways and they would report back with regard to maintenance in Syston.

From here, they made their way to Victoria street to see the pinch point of the Barkby Brook and a culvert which is in need of repair, there was in depth discussions as to how this area could be improved if at all.

The Melton Road Car park was the next stop and again CBC said they

were the riparian owners for the car park side up to half way across the Barkby Brook. It is in this area that the EA are planning to de-silt the brook weather permitting at the end of the summer/early autumn.

So hopefully this area will return to the way it look ten plus years ago. They will remove the silt and vegetation growing in the brook from the bottom corner of the car park, all the way round beside the butcher’s, under the bridge and right down to the railway bridge the other side of Memorial park.

A major concern raised to the agencies by several people including the butcher, is the wall behind the shops on Melton Road and visible from the car park which are deteriorating to the point that bricks and stones from the wall are falling into the brook and it is at risk of collapse which could be dangerous for the buildings as they could fall into the brook. This was left with the agencies to find out who the landowners are as they will be riparian owners.

From there the party walked along the brook to wards Memorial Park, noting down all the overgrown areas, some of which the riparian owners will need to be identified.

The walk ended at the Fosseway Road bridge, where the EA confirmed they had widened the brook on the Meadow Lane side of the Fosseway bridge after they had been notified by a residents at the drop in event in March of a landslip causing the brook to be narrowed. They also confirmed they had widened the Brook at the bridle way on Meadow Lane, but they didn’t repair the bridge, so the Stn can only presume that LCC had repaired it.

The reeds that have grown into a reed bed and will need to be removed again, with a hope that the rhizomes are also removed, although they will probably self-seed again, so this is an ongoing issue.

The Stn was told by the EA that the Barkby Brook is currently their number one priority, so assured the us that the work will be carried out at the end of the summer.

The SCFG said after the walk through that they were pleased that the main flood alleviation agencies; the EA, LCC and CBC are working together to improve the Barkby Brook for the benefit of the residents of Syston and will keep in touch with them all.

They were pleased that the agencies were listening to the residents affected by the recent floods, some of whom will not be back in their homes until the end of this year or even the beginning of next year.

Notice to Syston Residents

As recent events have shown, parts of Syston continue to be at risk of flooding during prolonged wet weather. As a result, town councillors continue to press the responsible authorities to take action to mitigate this risk. Additionally, as part of our continuing commitment to help residents with this issue in any way we can, the council is reviewing its’ emergency plan to help residents during times when flooding may be expected. Part of this plan is to be aware of vulnerable people who live in flood-risk areas of the town in order for our flood wardens to target and prioritise those less able to help themselves in times of need.

If you live in a flood-risk area of the town and consider yourself or a member of your household to be ‘vulnerable’ i.e. unable to look after yourself in the event of your property being flooded and therefore likely to require assistance in the event of your property being threatened by flood waters, you can let Syston Town Council know in advance, who will then add your name and address to a list so that in the event, flood wardens will be aware during the early phase of flooding where to prioritise and pinpoint their efforts to help. You can find out if you live in a higher risk area by visiting: https://check-long-term-flood-risk. service.gov.uk/postcode

If you do not have access to the internet, you can ask at the Syston Town Council offices for help in finding out the flood risk for your property.

If you wish your name to be added to the list of vulnerable people at risk from flooding, please contact Syston Town Council by calling 0116 260 7150 or emailing

REARSBY W.I.

Raising Awareness!

Awareness of whats going on, and thanks to ‘Syston Town News’ who accompanied us along the Barkby Brook you’ll be able to read in this edition all about our ‘walk through’ with the Environment Agency (the cavalry) the council representatives, and the Syston Community Flood Group (the group has been in constant contact throughout the year with the EA, Leicestershire and Borough Councils and this will continue).

Until the 1/100 flood episode in January we never felt the need to spend evenings at council meetings, most definitely no desire to becoming a local councillor, leaving that to those who thought they’d be able to make a difference! Happy to live quietly, raised a family, supported local events, shops, continuing with our voluntary work in the community with the elderly, vulnerable, sometimes isolated adults, preferring to believe that when the council tax bill lands on the mat each year (after gulping at this years percentage increase) that the expenditure is actually being used transparently and proactively for the good of Syston, and its attending these council meetings that has led to our eyes being opened, more residents really should go along for a listen, its an experience!

Reality check back to the present, we’ve currently got a Brook which has been so badly neglected by authorities for 20 years some residents we speak to want to weep, they remember how it used to be, clear of silt and vegetation, allowing water to pass through, time has stood still this year (sadly for some much longer) but nature hasn’t, it’s thriving with these sunny spells and showers, but the mess is being cleared by the Environment Agency soon, very soon.

Once the Brook is cleared and the watercourse is flowing how it should, we both hope we never feel the need to spend our evenings at any council meeting (local or otherwise) whether speaking on behalf of neighbours or just ourselves, (speaking on ‘behalf of others’ isn’t welcomed, well that’s how we feel), meetings where we felt unwelcome by the somewhat ‘unfriendly tone directed at us’ (that’s ‘our personal view, others air their personal views sometimes to, those that know, know’) we’ve learnt a lot this year, the madness of over zealous rules, regulations, and tick box exercises and surprisingly heard lots of nonsense to regarding *reed beds, *fire doors, *flood barriers (though a bit more thought has gone into the fire door/flood barriers scenario since) in a Brook full of mess, and a world of madness, these ridiculous things above * have made us, and others we’ve spoken to laugh out loud on more than one occasion, the laughter has been needed, our motivation continues.

On a more personal note ‘advisory signage’ was erected by the Town Council along areas of the Brook and we have objected to three of those lines (=10 words), unnecessary, unwanted by those affected by flooding (the affected residents being the minority, not the majority of the towns residents), alas the Town Council over ruled our personal objection as it’s their ‘duty of care’ to make the majority of residents aware that: - “Flooding is possible, be prepared, sign

up for flood alerts”

An example of ‘duty of care’ was used at the last Development meeting in reference to anyone parking a vehicle in the vicinity of the Brook, the council had a ‘duty of care to make motorists aware that the area they parked in might flood’, it seems the ‘health and wellbeing of the minority of residents who were actually affected in some way by flooding’ are way down the list of priorities! A simple ‘parking is at your own risk’ for motorists would do the job would it not?

So, those households in differing locations along the Brook who kindly wrote your name, signed, dated, gave your postcode and house number on our pre-printed letters asking for the advisory signage to be amended, it’s a NO from the Town Council, despite previously saying they would discuss the request if more than one household objected, it’s apparent that a decision had already been made even before the Council took their seats, WHY this time, because the two paragraphs of the letter were the same, our Town Council would NOT accept a request of amendments to signage (which would cost nothing to do) from 44 householders in flood affected areas

We don’t intend to let this one go, and it was suggested at the council meeting we might like to approach every other authority that had advisory signage around the town and ask them to amend those as well, really you say, yes really! It would be nice to think that our Town Council after reading this article would reconsider and quietly reverse their decision, restoring a tiny bit of faith that they actually listen to their residents! We just want to say, we’ve met some really nice people this year, whether it’s meeting up and working with the Syston Community Flood Group (systonfloodgroup@gmail.com) or by knocking on doors gathering support from residents over the signage, thank you for engaging with us and being kind.

Its going to take a long time to find and build a ‘community spirit’ after all this, but we hope with the ‘Syston Community Flood Group’ on board who have worked hard to raise awareness and get the message out there, that the health and well-being of the residents (ratepayers) of Syston, along with its local businesses who were affected, and its Brook front and centre has been raised enough, so that all the authorities are under no illusion that collectively and individually we all actually matter, and that our watercourse ‘must not be forgotten by those relevant councils’ after the Environment Agency clean up has been completed!!

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News

Cream Teas

An unseasonably cool day for the first day of Summer saw our first Cream Tea for this year to be held in the church. Plans for sitting outside had to be abandoned!

However, those who came enjoyed a large scone with clotted cream and jam as well as a tea or coffee and enjoy the company of friends.

A member of the congregation had brought a large selection of plants to be sold.

At the end, after all expenses had been fulfilled a total of £160.50 was raised for church funds.

Watch out for posters for future teas on July 6th, August 4th (Sunday) and

September 14th (Saturday as part of Heritage Weekend).

Families@4

Sunday 9th June families @4 explored prayer. We asked how we pray and when.

We looked at the Lord’s prayer. Rev. Ros reading scripture, the Gospel according to St Matthew chapter 6 verses 9 to 15.

We had fun creating prayer wheels, bracelets and a godly play version of the Lord’s prayer.

We finished with a fun active bubble prayer and washed it down with gallons of tea and coffee and some scrummy homemade cakes.

We are taking a break during July and August, see you again 2nd Sunday in September.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you to highlight the problem we are having in the Wolsey Way area.

We have a lot of grassed open spaces which is lovely, but for some time now the grass hasn’t being cut so it looks unkept and as if we are living in a slum area!!

Behind the garages grass is growing where it shouldn’t which again looks unsightly!

A contractor on a sit on mower came and cut the grass down at the back of the garages but not the grass public areas in front of the properties, he told me that the council were leaving things more natural!

Well, I am appalled that I and my neighbours pay our council tax which is always going up and what do we get in return, no one looking after the public areas which is vital for the well being of residents who look over these areas, why is it being ignored and even forgotten?

Another down side to the grass not being cut is that some irresponsible dog owners are not clearing up after their dogs, which is disgusting! This is hazardous to young children who might like to run through the

long grass and then find themselves covered in animal excrement! What is Syston coming too? It’s a disgrace and makes me very angry indeed.

One has to ask oneself, where is the money from the ever increasing council tax going? As it certainly isn’t being used to keep our environment clear and pleasant. Residents keep their own front gardens neat and tidy with mown lawns and then they have to look out over these unsightly unkept public grass areas!

Some are now losing the will to continue adding to the dishevelled appearance of our neighbourhood.

Don’t give me the old chestnut that its for the wildlife because the only wild life in Syston at the moment are the residents!

Yours sincerely

Big Ging!

PS there is a God! just before the Stn went to print, I contacted them because I looked out of my window and a man from Leicestershire County Council was cutting the grass! However, it is supposed be cut six times a year and here we are in June and its only been cut twice, because it has been too wet!!

Dear Editor,

I feel I need to write to the Stn to express my disappointment about the event on the park in June to commemorate the 80thanniversary of theD Day landings. The publicity re the timings of various stages of the event did not seem to be consistent at all, so I called in to the

Town Council Office in the afternoon to clarify the time when the event on the park would start. A member of staff in the outer office did not seem to know anything about the event, but the Town Manager stated that it began at 6.00pm. Thus, I and my sister went down to the park at six only to find that the various stalls and displays were in the process of being erected, and that we had arrived far too early for the main events of the evening. (By this I mean the lighting of the beacon and the ceremonial part of the events). We were very disappointed as our father was involved in the landings and we wished to honour the memory of all those courageous men who died in the event and to honour the bravery and stoicism of those who survived.

Yours sincerely, Mrs F. Austin.

Dear Editor,

I am not in the habit of writing letters of complaint but was so disgusted by the DDay commemoration event in Syston that I felt it needed to be commented on:

First of all, there was hardly any publicity – as far as I know, just a notice on the bridge on Melton Road. I was told that it would start at 6pm so I went down to the park where I found the following: Billy Bates Funfair - totally inappropriate for the occasion.

A few World War II re-enactors in authentic uniforms with a jeep and some Equipment, A few young people in uniform, hanging around – presumably members of the TA.

Email: enquiries@gamblefunerals.co.uk www.gamblefunerals.co.uk

“The Beacon”: A plinth with an oil lamp on the top. A few stalls just being set up, a few people in dark suits and dresses, also hanging about. There were also a few people sitting on the bench seats waiting for something to happen!

There was no band, no other activity nor any indication of what was going to happen - where or when. I walked round the park and waited for about 20 minutes but then went home in disgust.

We have been inspired and moved by the TV coverage from Normandy of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Obviously a local event is not going to match this in any way, though the annual remembrance parade to the war memorial on the 11th of November is always appropriate and moving.

If you are going to embark on organising an event like this, do it properly or not at all.

S. Blaxland

Dear Editor,

I must respond to the letter signed M&K (Residents) published in the May edition of Syston Town News.

We are disappointed to hear that some residents feel that “…no one’s listening anyway.” Since the recent flood events, Syston Town Council (STC), both councillors and staff, have respond to residents concerns in any way they can within (and sometimes above) the bounds of their responsibilities. Examples include:

Listening to members of the public in open meetings and noting their concerns.

Contacting and continuing to work with, the responsible bodies (EA, LCC and CBC) to get answers and to improve matters with the brook and other areas (balancing ponds; drains).

Publishing numerous notices and statements on the matter as well as producing our own advice leaflet providing information on how residents can be prepared and how to contact the responsible bodies.

Created a ‘Flood Focus Group’ comprising councillors and members of the public (the responsibilities of which have now passed officially to the Development & General Purposes committee of the council) to investigate on a continuing basis all matters affecting flood alleviation and assistance to residents.

Attended the joint ‘drop-in’ meeting in March with EA, LCC and CBC.

Put in place and arranged training and provided PPE for a number of volunteer Flood Wardens (more required – please contact STC).

Offered help to residents who may not have access to internet facilities to complete flood claim forms by offering our own office services.

Produced, paid for and affixed notices at strategic points around the town warning residents and visitors that flooding can occur in the vicinity and giving contact numbers in the event.

Took part in a joint ‘Brook Walk’ in June with officers of the EA, LCC and CBC, and members of the public.

Arranged for the donated 20 tonnes of sand to be delivered to council premises which is available to Syston residents free of charge (again contact STC should you require any). We have arranged for residents that are unable to fill and collect their own sandbags (ie vulnerable people), can have them delivered to their homes by the council.

I think anyone will see from the above that, even if ‘no one else’ is listening, Syston Town Council most certainly are and not only that, we are responding in any way we can, often involving expenditure, to do the best for the residents of Syston, all of which are in addition and over and above any legal duties and responsibilities (with regards to flooding matters) placed upon any parish or Town council.

Bowling – Something Special to Offer Women

Bowling is a sport, suited to all ages, in which the sexes are able to compete on an equal basis. No-one should feel excluded. ‘Teenage to Third Age’ remains an appropriate invitation.

The sport has a particular attraction to offer those – especially women –who in their later years find themselves alone, having to adjust to the loss of a much-loved life partner. All too often, under these circumstances, loneliness, isolation and depression risk becoming the norm.

Membership of your local Club –such as Syston Bowling Club, offers a perfect remedy.

One of our established lady Members says:

“Bowling is a very healthy and sociable sport – not only do you meet lots of friendly people, it also gets you outdoors in the fresh air and sometimes in the sunshine, although sunshine is not guaranteed! You don’t need a partner, you can turn up on your own and you will immediately be part of the team.

Here in Syston Bowling Club, the teams are mixed and the kit of a polo shirt and shorts or trousers apply to both

The rules are quite simple to follow and there

is always someone happy to show you what to do. Men and women compete on equal terms. There are many opportunities to play, but no pressure, you just play to fit in with your lifestyle.

After the games, there are tea and cakes and, possibly, a drink from the Bar, whatever takes your fancy. In the winter months, there is an active social programme in the clubhouse, including Christmas lunch and a New Year party.

Bowling offers ladies a great and easy opportunity to make new friends and to get fit through gentle exercise and have fun; whatever your age! Why wait?”

Syston is actively working to welcome more women into its membership. If, for whatever reason, you are seeking ‘Fitness, Friendship and Fun’ or if you are faced with the challenges of adapting to living alone, you should seriously consider contacting us to take that first step on your journey. Start with a couple of free introductory coaching sessions starting at 5.00pm on a Tuesday evening. No need to book in advance. Otherwise, contact Val Foreman via vfpolo@aol.com or tel: 0116 2609 635 who will be very happy to hear from you and give you more information.

Team 3G Update on Their Travels Again for LOROS

As it has not been possible to organise the 'From Classics to Jazz' concert this year because of Rachael's playing commitments in Hull, Maureen and Rachael decided to virtually pedal the 'North Coast 500' - 516 miles round the coast of Scotland starting at Inverness and travelling clockwise.

By the time you read this they will be 11 weeks into their journey and have just passed 400 miles and are ‘approaching’ Wick. The imagined scenery from John O’Groats down to Inverness is far less spectacular than the West coast and the hills are much less evident!

In the next three weeks they have to ‘pedal’ the last 111 miles to complete the NC 500 and ‘reach’ Inverness by the 19th July, the 26th anniversary of when Maureen's husband Jim passed away in LOROS.

Hopefully they will complete this in the 14 weeks since Maureen’s 83rd birthday. Faith (11) is well on her way to walking and cycling 100 miles – the distance from her home in Hull to the LOROS hospice, although she is still convinced that she can exceed this. While she was in Syston at half term she helped deliver over 100 copies of the Syston Town News, adding to her total mileage.

Maureen and Rachael are still hoping to reach their goal of raising £500 for LOROS.

Since 2000 with the 'From Classics to Jazz' concerts and their virtual journeys during lockdown to Norfolk and back and Lands End to John O'Groats, they have so far raised over £10,000.They hope that as many people as possible will continue to support them in their fundraising efforts for LOROS, a charity which will always remain close to their hearts.

New Barkby W.I

President, Shirley Franklin, welcomed members and visitors to the New Barkby W.I June meeting.

‘Jerusalem’ was sung, then there was a short amount of time devoted to business matters. Shirley also thanked Louisa Chapman for organising the fish and chip supper, which members enjoyed at last months meeting.

Speaker, Michael Elliott, with a powerpoint presentation gave a talk on Stoneywell Cottage, now belonging to the National Trust and was owned by Ernest Gimson, a member of the Arts and Craft movement.

Michael gave his account of becoming a volunteer at Stoneywell, including driving the mini bus that takes visitors from the car park to the cottage.

The slides showed all the various rooms and bedrooms, with doors made from sweet chestnut, chairs made mostly from ash and a massive oak chest with carvings. The furniture was made without nails or glue, to reflect some of the methods use at that time.

One child’s cat was replicated on a smaller scale to fit into a bedroom. Toys of the period of the 1930’s were arranged in another child’s bedroom.

The pantry in the cottage was built into the local rock, so was always cold, even on a warm day.

As well as the property, there are some beautiful gardens, which display flowers and shrubs, depending on the season. One slide of 2023, showed the whole area covered in snow.

After the talk there was a question and answer time, before refreshments and some social time.

Jan Oliver thanked Michael.

The competition winner for ‘Something old that you treasure’ with a miniature photograph in a silver frame was Maria Edgeley.

The raffle winner was Dawn Haynes.

The next meeting is Wednesday 3rd July 2024 at 7:30pm in the Syston Community Centre

Our guest speaker will be Bishop Peter Fox with ‘Magical Mystery Tour’.

June is the month when everything seems to start happening in the garden; even though the weather has still been a bit patchy, that’s certainly been the case for Grow Give Live.

We hosted a lovely event at Delish for two to four year olds and their grown-ups; our Forest School Practitioner, Lou Jaggard, created a number of nature themed activities for the budding gardeners to choose from, including making seed bombs and yarn sticks. Thank you to Dani at Delish for letting us use the beautiful courtyard garden at the café – do check it out if you haven’t already seen it!

We plan to hold more events like this over the summer, so keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages or email us to be added to our mailing list to keep in touch.

On a lovely sunny Sunday morning in

early June, we planted up the flower beds by the Duck and Willow Café, see image below, the flowers look stunning and will help bring in pollinators for the fruit and veg we have planted nearby. Don’t forget to keep checking for ripe produce, there have been some super strawberries there already; all produce is free for the community, just make sure you wash before eating.

Our beds down at Scotia Press on St Peter’s Street are coming along nicely; we are very grateful to Issy Rose, who is completing her Duke of Edinburgh volunteer hours with us and is dedicated to weekly watering and weeding to keep the beds looking good, we couldn’t manage without her incredible support! Finally, we have been enjoying our weekly Friday allotment sessions; there’s always plenty of weeding to be doing, as well as working towards the longer-term projects on the plot, including installing a potting shed for our winter plans!

If you want to join us, we’re on plot 73B, first on the left as you go in, from 10am to 12noon every Friday.
