Inhisspeechhesaidhewasdelighted tojoineveryoneonbehalfoftheLordLieutenantofLeicestershire,MrMike KapurOBE,topresentthisveryspecial PlatinumJubileeCommunityand BusinessAward.

‘Ofcourse,sinceyouwererecognised withthisspecialawardearlierinthe summer,theCountryand Commonwealthhaveunitedingrief followingthedeathofHerMajestyThe lateQueen.Whilsttodaywecome togethertocelebrateyour achievementsandcontributiontoour area,beforeweproceed,Iwouldinvite

downtopushingmyselftohard. Iampleasetosaythough,thatI managedtocompletethetriathlon andactuallygotfirstplaceinmyage group.However,whenoutrunning afterthecompletionofthetriathlonI onceagainhadtostopdueto strugglingtoswallowwhichthen resultedinmehavingasmallfacial seizurewhichagain,Iputdownto runningtoofar.

However,havingbeensentofffora biopsy,itwasfoundtobea ‘GLIOBLASTOMA’thisisarare aggressivestage4braincancerthat isuntreatableandIwastherefore giventhehighlyunexpectedfinal prognosisthatthecancerIhaveis terminal.

Atthebeginningof2016attheageof 51,Istartedtrainingformyfirst triathlontoraisemoneyforprostate cancerresearch.Havingplayed rugbyformanyyearswhenyounger andhavinglookedaftermyself physically,sincestoppingplaying rugby,thetriathlontrainingwentwell. AsthetriathlongotcloserInoticedI startedtoloseabitofstrengthinmy leftsidewhichIputdowntoa possibletrappednerveandona coupleofoccasionswhenout runningIhadtostopasIwas strugglingtoswallowwhichIput

Unfortunatelythesefacialseizures becamemoreregularandsevereand occurredevenwhennotoutrunning whichmademerealisesomething wasnotright.Underpressurefrom mywife,Ivisitedthedoctorswho initiallyfeltitwasanerveissueand organisedaneurologisttoseeme whothensubsequentlyorganised furthernervetestsandanMRIscan. Atthisstagemyseizureswere gettingmoresevereandregularandI startedtostruggletocopewithbasic issuesatworkandhomedueto memoryloss,blurredvision,lossof feelingdownmyleftsideetc,again, underpressurefrommywifewho hadtopushtheMRIscanby contactingthehospitaldirect,had managedtogetthescanprioritised andthesubsequentresultsshowedI hadabraintumour,withinaweekI wasbeingoperatedfortheremoval ofthetumourwhichwasconsidered asuccess.

Myinitialresponsewasoneofshock, sadnessandangerwhichvery quicklychangedintodetermination, toenjoythelifeIhaveleftandtofight thediseaseforaslongaspossible. Soonafterfindingoutaboutmy tumour,wehavesetupafundraising planforthe‘THEBRAINTUMOUR CHARITY’tohelpintheresearchof findingacureforthisstrainofcancer. Aspartofanongoingplanofraising moneyforthiscause,weheldavery successfulsportsmansdinnerwhich tooktakeplaceinSeptember2017to raisemoneyandawarenessofthis diseaseandmanyothersmaller eventsintheyearstocome.

Onethingthatisveryimportanttome nowisthatpeoplebecomeawareof thesymptomsofthisformofcancer asthereisnodoubtinmymindthat theearlieritispickedup,theeasierit istotreatandmanyofthesymptoms youmaynotassociatewithabrain tumour.

So,justoversixyearsonfrommy husbandJohnbeingdiagnosedwitha Gliblastomagrade4braintumourand given15monthstolive,heisstillwith usanddefiedallodds.

Heisnow58yearsold,I(hiswife)is now53,oursonCharlieisnow20and ourbeloveddog/princessisnow10 (shehasbeenwithusthroughoutallof thisandhashelpedusbeyondwords).

Obviouslyitsbeenadifficultsixyears butwithalotofhappytimesinbetween tomakehappymemoriesbutnowfor somereason,alotofsideeffectfrom treatmentsatthebeginninghave decidedtoshow,Depression,Anxiety andNeuropathy:-

Neuropathicpainiscausedbydamage fromhiscancertreatmenttothenerves inhisfingers,facebutmainlyinhis feet.

Thepainisusuallydescribedasa burningsensationandaffectedareas areoftensensitivetothetouch. Symptomsofneuropathicpainmay

alsoincludeexcruciatingpain,pins andneedles,difficultycorrectly sensingtemperaturesandnumbness. Somepeoplemayfindithardtowear thickclothesasevenslightpressure canaggravatethepain.

YET!Despiteallofthis,Johnisnowin trainingtorunthe‘LONDON MARATHON’!inAprilthisyear,how proudweareofhim.It’sgoingtobe toughbutalsoenjoyableandwhatan achievement,thisishisnextgoalin lifeandhasgivenhimsomethingonce againtostrivefor.

Iamalsorunningitwithhimandwith myselfhavingCOPD,Ifindithard sometimestorunasbreathingisan issuebutitisverygoodforme mentallyandphysically,I’veonlybeen runningforafewyearsandformethis isalsoahugeachievementeven thoughIranitin2021,thedreadis startingtokickinlol.That’senough aboutme,thisisaboutraising awarenessandmoneyforourcharity ‘THEBRAINTUMOURCHARITY’.

UnfortunatelyBrainTumoursseemto beincreasingmassivelyandweneed tohelpwithraisingfundsforresearch tosavelives.

WreakeandSoarValleyAthletics Clubmember,ZoeGilbodyhasbeen selectedtorepresentGBattheWorld CrossCountryChampionshipsin Australia.Itistheclubsfirstmember tobeselectedtocompeteonthe globalstage.Flyingoutonthe13th February,shewillhavejustfivedays ‘downunder’toacclimatisetothe AustralianSummerconditions,which couldreachwellintothehigh20’s, andtheinevitablejetlagfromthe longflight.Shewillflyoutfrom LondontoDoha,thentoSydney beforethefinallegofthejourneyto Bathurstwherethechampionships takeplaceonthe18thFebruary.

downsoformercaptainUmarRazzaq waselectedtoleadthesideonce again.Umar(picturedbelowleft)has beenwiththeclubsince2008andin thattimehehasscoredover5000 runsandtakenover200wickets.He willbesupportedbyclubstalwart CharlieTaylorwhowillbevice-captain. The2ndXIwillbeundernew managementwithHenryWhaitleading theteamsupportedbyvice-captain JoeStorer.Ivanwillalsooncemorebe leadingthesuperSundayXI.Hannah DriverwillleadtheSirensandJoe HowletttheBurroughLeagueteam.
