Rotary Club of the WreakeValley 2023 Watermead CharityChallenge Run

The 13th Watermead Challenge took place on Tuesday 4th July.

Over 370 keen amateur runners and fun runners took part on a very pleasant evening. Organised by the Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley, the event saw the 5 mile traditional route and the reintroduction of a 3 mile fun run. Rotary Club Nigel Coleman said "The Watermead Challenge is a big part of our calendar and once again we have been so well supported by the large number of entrants. Most importantly, we were indebted to the superb management of the event by our Race Director and his team of helpers.

This year, we reintroduced the 3 mile fun run and I spoke to a number of people who said it was their first fun run and that it was a very safe and friendly atmosphere".

The club always attracts a good field of runners from many local running clubs and all results can be seen on the Watermead Run Facebook page but a special mention goes to male runner Dan Hallam in a winning time of 25.53 minutes and female runner Clare Frankland in a winning time of 28.31 minutes.

The event will have raised over £4,000 and this will be used by the Rotary Club to support numerous projects locally, nationally and internationally. Big thanks to all the runners and to the many volunteers who made it all possible. See you all again in 2024.

The Syston and District Social Club New Members always welcome

Runday isn’t just a running club, it is so much more

Self doubt exists in all of us, but through Runday, there is a group of people who are coming together to improve not only their fitness but their mental health and confidence too. We caught up with the group ahead of their new beginners run group which starts in September, to find out what it is that makes Runday so special. The group have become infamous in Syston and the surrounding villages for their bright yellow running tops, but as Rundayer Vicky said “Runday isn’t just a running club, it is so much more” Runday has given me a new sense of freedom, over the last six months I have felt so much healthier and happier.”

Sue thinks the group support is just amazing, something she hasn’t found in other sports, “It is all driven by Michelle and her belief that we can all do it. There’s no such word as ‘slow’ or ‘sorry’ with Runday” Kim agreed, telling us “the support, encouragement and belief in each person at each session is amazing. If I ever doubt my ability (which I do often) the group especially Michelle never doubt me, encouraging me to do my best and without exception, at the end of every session I feel so proud and happy of what I achieve.

I’ve made friends and I’m much fitter but I’ve also found a group that has welcomed me with open arms.”

Marie said her mental health and confidence has improved since joining Runday and she no longer feels guilty for taking time out for her. “When I am putting my trainers on, I am teaching my girls the importance of exercise to be fit and strong” Kate agrees “I’m also so proud of the example I am setting my kids - you don’t have to be the best at something to love it and you don’t have to look like a runner to be a runner.”

It's the community, connections and friendships that Runday has forged that keeps them coming back. Sharan told us “I certainly wouldn't still be running if it wasn't for the fantastic encouragement and support from Michelle and the rest of the Runday gang. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, the support is still the same. Best thing I started..... EVER!!!”

Abi runs her own business from home and finds that meeting up and running with like-minded people 2-3 times a week gives her focus and drive for whatever the working week wants to throw at her. “It's the mental and social rest my busy mind needs to make sure it stays healthy and well.”

Runday meet to run in Syston every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Their new Beginners Run Group starts week commencing 18th September and is suitable for complete beginners or those returning to running.

To find out more you can contact Michelle Findon, Runday Founder and Coach by email at Michelle. Findon@Runday.co.uk or on 0772 121 3869.

Change of Minister for the Methodist Church

In July, the church was full for the farewell service for the Rev Daniel Yovan who had been with us for the past five years. Daniel came here as a trainee Minister and was ordained

in July 2021. His ministry here in Syston was a blessing to all who knew him, especially his work with the bereaved and sick. We wish him and his family Gods blessing in his new appointment in St. Albans. In September we welcome our new Minister the Rev Paula Hunt. Paula has worked in our Trinity Circuit since 2016 having responsibilities for Birstall and Rothley churches as well as taking on the Superintendent work of the Circuit. We are delighted she is joining us at Syston and look forward to working with her.

On Friday 28th July, after 30 years on Melton Road, Syston, Declan and Sonia closed the shop premises. However, the business will continue from their home.

This is partly due to rising costs but also to reduce their workload. Declan and Sonia would like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to customers and everyone who came into the shop and hope you will continue to use their services in the future.

We at Stn want to thank Declan and Sonia for their continued support to ourselves as they have been advertising with us since our inception in 1996.

Syston and District “Working to improve life for older people in Syston and District”

Tales from the plot September

As we drift slowly from summer to autumn there’s still plenty to be done, keep hoeing …. always a must! Thankfully our two freezers are now bursting at the seams with vegetables that will carry us through the winter and into the next year, it’s a nice feeling. We’ve had a good year with warmth and rain, a great combination for growing vegetables. One thing to always look for this time of year is seed reductions: most retail suppliers greatly reduce the price of seeds at this time of year and it’s a great way to stock up with cheap seeds for next year. If seeds are kept dry and at a low constant temperature there is no reason why you shouldn’t have success with them the following year - I keep mine in a biscuit tin in a cupboard. However there are exceptions, parsnip seeds have to be fresh; I was once told that if the seed is flat as a parsnip seed is they will not keep. I don’t know whether there’s any truth in this but it certainly seems to be the way.

As runner beans and french beans come to an end, I’m told it’s a good practice to leave the roots when you tidy up adding nitrogen to the soil. Also keep the beans that have been leftand let them dry then keep the seeds for the following year, I’ve done this for many years with great success.

One of the hardest things for me has been learning what could be planted

that would allow my allotment to supply food throughout the year and it can,I still haven’t fully mastered this, however I am getting pretty close hopefully.

There is still a lot you can do and a lot you can plant and harvest through the winter, spinach and swiss chard can be harvested right through the winter also russian kale, borecole, savoy cabbage, brussels and of course leeks. I think everyone should grow leeks, they make wonderful soup and are a must have in any winter casserole, try them fried with cabbage for a tasty vegetable accompaniment, they are just great. Root crops like parsnips and carrots can just be dug and used as needed throughout the winter, I’ve also managed to grow lettuce through the winter - only a really severe frost will wipe them out, if you cover them they can usually survive.

If you’re growing some potatoes for Christmas they should be well underway by now, try and cover them if there’s going to be a particularly cold night. Broad beans can go in later this month which will overwinter and be ready early spring next year although for me this has never worked well, I prefer to plant them late February.

Strawberries normally have their runners trying to root around this time and are a great supply of new plants for thefollowing year, autumn raspberries should now be producing often right through until November, with our main crop of summer raspberries we usually make jam, the later autumn raspberries are just a special treat on your cereal first thing in the morning … just lovely!

Syston Allotment Open Day

Syston Allotment Society held an Open Day on 12th August; the temperature was less extreme than it had been for the 2022 Open Day and this was appreciated! There was a steady flow of visitors who came to wander round the plots; several of them were on a waiting list for their own plot and wanted to find out what the allotments are like and talk to current plot holders. The tombola was a great favourite, and plot holders had donated fruit and veg and eggs for people to buy. The tea stall was laden with cakes that had also been donated and these were sampled enthusiastically. Many thanks to everyone who gave produce, tombola items, or cakes etc for the tea stall - it was much appreciated. The competitions (Best box of Syston Allotment produce from your plot, Best item made from produce, and a Children's art competition on the theme of Syston Allotments) were judged by Richard Thorpe of 'Tales from the Plot' fame, and his wife Jane. They said they had a very difficult job because the standards were so high and Syston Allotments would like to thank them for all

their work. Awards were as follows: Children's art:

All children's art entries were excellent especially two from plot 65B and one from plot 63B.

Best box of produce:

Gold: Beryl Ellis plot 60A

Silver: J. Morris plot 8B

Bronze: T. Strutt plot 10B

Best item made from produce: Gold: Sue Kirk plot 73b, spicy courgette chutney.

Silver: Helen Lake plot 63b, especially the jams.

Bronze: Kate Hubbard plot 19b, especially the gin.

Best kept plot award:

The plots were judged by Alan Dayman, from Derry's Nurseries. Syston Allotments would like to thank him for all his time and the care with which he assessed the plots, not an easy task. He said Syston plots are very much better than ten (or more) years ago last time he judged; better in terms of less wastage, more cultivation, and perhaps most importantly a lovely variety of plants and veg. He said he was not bothered about a few weeds, so long as they were part of a well cultivated plot that was being used productively. He admired the half plots and said they were working very well: that was a big change since his earlier visits. Overall he was very impressed and seemed to enjoy his visit and his conversations with plot holders. Best kept plot awards:

Winner: Martin Aherne, Plot 35b, pictured

here, with plot below. 'brilliant use of the area for production, loved the amount of re-used materials and absence of waste, thinks about nature, neat plot, considers all aspects of gardening'

Silver award: Brian Piggin, Plot 3

'All sorts of stuff, good use of full plot because great variety of crops.'

Highly commended: three half plots all demonstrating how a smaller plot can be used to cultivate a wide variety of crops

8B: S Gretton, 9B: J and S Lay, 16A: G and D Mistry.

Mark Cherry flew his drone to take some fantastic photos of the winning plots. Syston is very fortunate to have allotments which are so much part of the town rather than being on the periphery, and which are managed by a Town Council who see them as an asset. A huge thank you to everybody involved. For more pictures of the event visit our website.

A Life Changing and Fearful Experience

I have regular sight tests at Your Sight opticians in Syston. Nitin and the team have always been so professional and have always gone above and beyond to ensure I get the best care. Over the years Nitin has got to know me and my eyes very well.

On a routine visit a few weeks ago, Nitin noticed that I had several bleeds behind my eyes.

He explained the situation to me clearly and concisely. He gave me the relevant reassurance I needed as at this point, as anyone else, I was extremely worried. It was such a comfort to know that he ensured I was equipped with the details I needed to know about the discovery and I understood with the use of relevant terminology. He provided me with a letter, for me to take to my GP requesting a set of full blood tests and blood pressure checks. I was advised to get in touch with the surgery as soon as possible for the relevant tests. I was able to take this letter to the reception staff who expedited me an appointment with a Doctor.

I received the necessary tests and consultations. It transpired that I had Stage 2 Hypertension and my

cholesterol was raised. I did not feel any different in myself, I did not feel unwell and I could honestly say I was not feeling symptomatic. However, there was clearly an issue going on behind the scenes.

This was a strong wake up call for me as I realised how much one eye test can reveal. I became aware of just how important this discovery has been for me and my life. I have been able to work with the doctors to get the treatment I need, with my blood pressure now under control and my cholesterol on its way down to a good place. I think this message is very important and everyone should give their eyes the attention they deserve and ensure they have routine sight tests.

I am ever so grateful to Nitin for always looking after my eyes to the highest standard. I feel this is a new chapter for me and I that I owe this to the discovery made during this simple yet fundamental sight test. I wish to thank the whole Your Sight Opticians team for everything. Sue.

Celebration for Fr. Clement’s 20th Anniversary of Priesthood

On Sunday 13th August a Celebration event was held for Fr. Clement and a very memorable and joyful one it was too. There were a few surprises and over 200 people attending whilst many watched the live streaming worldwide. A Mass was held and began with a grand entrance procession lead by the Kenyan choir group singing their way into church followed by Rev Fr. Clement, assisted by Brother Lawrence Ezeilo and Rev Fr. Leszek.

messages from Fr. Clement’s niece Edina, brother Maurice, sister Helen and most importantly from his mother Mama Kerebu who are in Kenya and could not attend the celebrations. This was very emotional and many needed a tissue to wipe off their tears of joy!

Apart from the Kenyan Choir, we had the Goan Choir who sang a Konkani offertoryhymn accompanied by the guitar and mouth organ. We also had our own church choir in attendance.

At the end of Mass, Charles Wookey, who was at Fr. Clement’s ordination 20 years ago in Kisii, Kenya with his wife and four children enlightenedus with his life experiences of knowing Fr. Clement.

After Mass we all went into the lovely church hall where the Kenyan Catholic Women Association choir danced their way into the hall and escorted Fr. Clement to start the joyous celebrations where there was ample food and refreshments for all to enjoy.

We were also entertained by some excellent jazz numbers by our very own Amile Payne whilst the guests ate, drank and got merry!

Finally, we all counted down from 20 and Fr. Clement cut his lovely anniversary cake which had a chalice on top surrounded by a stole. Tony Monteiro raised the Toast on behalf

the committee members and of all the guests present. All enjoyed a flute of Prosecco/bubbly and wished him

well. There was so much cake too for all to enjoy.

Fr. Clement was showered with many gifts and also a cricket batsman trophy which said 20 not out! Love from all your parishioners in Syston and Sileby.

“This Is the Best Day of My Life” commented Fr. Clement at the end of the event.

Community Shop Supports Syston Residents with Cost-ofLiving Grant

A community organisation in Syston has shared how they used £1,000 in grant funding to support vulnerable residents in the town.

As part of its Charnwood Community Action campaign, Charnwood Borough Council awarded over £37,000 to various projects and community organisations to help them to continue supporting residents struggling with the rising cost of living.

Second Time Around, a community interest shop located in Syston Town Square focuses on reducing waste by selling second hand items. The proceeds are invested back into the local community through activities and events. After seeing an increased demand for essentials such as toiletries, towels and clothing for new-born babies, the shop applied for a cost-of-living grant to create ‘bare necessities’ boxes filled with basic items for vulnerable people in the

community.

Each box is tailored to meet the individual needs of recipients who range from single parents, people struggling with debt and elderly people who live on their own and are housebound.

Around 25 boxes have been delivered across Syston so far.

Victoria Reed and Jackie Henson, directors at Second Time Around explained more about the project and how the grant funding has helped.

Victoria said: “As a shop which focuses on supporting the community, we wanted to do more to help those who may be struggling to afford essential items through no fault of their own.

“We have a list of residents who need our help and we also work with Age Concern Syston who make referrals as people can be too shy or embarrassed to ask for help.

“We fill boxes with the items they need most and often hand deliver them in our own time. We include a little card with a code word inside the box for future use. It can be used at future visits to the shop and is a way of asking for help instead of it being a stigma.”

Jackie added: “The grant we received enabled us to buy brand-new items which have made a real difference to people. Those who are elderly or don’t have any family are very grateful and sometimes just appreciate seeing someone and having a chat.

“The shop is there to help the community and we are always open to receiving new donations of unwanted items.”

The community shop has also provided 12 boxes to new parents to support them on their journey when the baby was born.

Cllr Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s lead member for communities and neighbourhoods said: “We know it has been a difficult time for residents as they continue to navigate their way through the rising cost of living.

Second Time Around is an excellent example of how cost-of-living grants have benefited residents who are struggling financially and have a limited or no support network.

In addition to the borough's amazing network of community organizations, I would like to thank Second Time Around for assisting residents in obtaining essential items, which I'm sure were greatly appreciated.

We are continuing to update the Council's website with cost-of-living information, advice and useful links, and I would encourage anyone who is concerned to take a look and access the support they need."

For more information about what support is available to help with cost-of-living issues, please visit www.charnwood.gov. uk/cca.

Second Time Around welcome any donations for the shop: bric a brac, ladies and mens clothing, books, household etc. as they are running low. Either pop in with your donations or telephone 0116 319 1311.

NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW! ‘IMAGINARIUM’ GROUP. ‘Imaginarium’? What on earth is that I hear you ask? It’s just your imagination. Do you remember listening as a child to the tales told by older members of the family, or sitting with visiting friends at home and hearing stories that captivated your attention and imagination? Has the art of storytelling been lost? Whilst some people enjoy writing, others might like to express memories and imagination in other ways.

With the working title ‘Imaginarium’, acquired from Walt Disney, I enjoyed many fascinating conversations with interesting people at the U3A ‘Open Day’ in April and a new group was added to the variety of groups already offered. We all have a story in us and with the help of a few props at the first meeting, I was delighted for them to be shared irrespective of being true or false as our imagination is a wonderful asset.

Storytelling is something many of us did with, and as, children. Often when we reach adulthood this ability remains but is dormant.

Members of ‘Imaginarium’ experimented stimulating the imagination using words and pictures to set off flights of fancy. Another meeting introduced a Victorian parlour game called ‘Myriorama’ which helped to move a story along. Given free reign, our imagination can take us to some wonderful places providing lots of scope for development. Stretching the imagination and storytelling can be approached in many different ways, and as a new group we’re experimenting with a few of these to see which works best at getting the ‘little grey cells’ working. Using words, items and picture prompts, we develop stories from a few facts

which take us to a new place where the current version is all that matters. Starting with questions like; what do these characters tell you? Where are they from and what are are their stories? Look at any image or object and allow your imagination to create a story around it. What does it say to you? What ideas come in to your head when you look at it?

Members volunteered to bring along three things:-

1. A ‘story starter’ statement that we all will build on.

2. A portable item that has a story behind it for the rest of us to delve in to and come up with our own interpretation.

3. A work related story from our own experience. Come to a meeting of ‘Imaginarium’ and tell us. Help to shape how storytelling and using your imagination can be fun!

Interested?

Before becoming a Member of ‘Syston and District U3A’ you can enjoy ‘Taster sessions’ of this group and one other from the diverse choice of groups on offer or come along to our monthly meeting instead.

ARIES March 21 - April 19

You complete practical tasks at long last after quite some considerable hesitation and procrastination. You now need to congratulate yourself and be pleased that you are now free to focus on other matters. And your long-term hopes and dreams certainly get a look in. A partner is bossy and a new job is on offer! Quite a handful.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

It’s time to spend time on all things that you enjoy doing the most. Although romance proves to be something of a challenge with the object of your desires putting themselves first constantly! New tasks on the home front certainly provide some distraction and others do offer help – if you ask them. Life moves on quickly.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

A great new business idea certainly fascinates you! And a new romantic flame just proves to be too tantalising... The home environment is also subject to some changes and all this is most absorbing! So no time for boredom to set in this month. Certain friends are also destined to move on after promises fulfilled and all completed.

CANCER June 21 - July 22

You just love your financial position this month and a partner certainly helps to provide even more stability. Your daily routine is up for a review and a new job or task brings along a different environment and this does you just so much good. Heavy discussions and conflict on the home front prove challenging and yet energising.

LEO July 23 - August 22

Your charisma shines this month and others can’t fail to be attracted to your glitz and style. And you’re certainly out to put your happiness first – and why not? A new way of making money also appeals and yet you can only get this off the ground if you communicate this idea thoroughly with others. You’re certainly busy.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

The month starts off with some confusion with Mercury – the planet of Communication – travelling backwards in your sign. Then as it turns forwards, you start to make much sense of things before the month ends! The new Moon also in your sign this month brings you all that you ever could desire – but intense indeed.

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

With the planet Mars rattling through your sign this month, you can’t help but feel more energised and even a little feisty at times. Your determination grows as you turn your attention to a new dream and even a new ‘sweetheart’! Meanwhile, work demands much of your attention as you seek perfection.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22

Something gets under your skin quietly and yet gives you the impetus that you need to make improvements. A job reaches the end of the line and this could even be a career! Your attention thus turns to partners and loved ones. Starting a new business with someone special is a distinct possibility. Yes, a lot going on.

SAGITTARIUSNov 23 - Dec 21

Money comes to you in a haphazard fashion after some unusual ideas and experiments – in true risky Sagittarius style! You can only stand-by and hope. Everyone else is watching on in amazement too. However they also have a good deal to say so close your ears to criticism being as they may also be envious.

CAPRICORNDec 22 - Jan 19

You’re working hard towards your dreams and yet you’re not overly confident that you’re making enough progress! This is because it’s time to focus on some hobbies and other activities – and it really is a good time for a holiday. Your home environment forces the issue when others boldly make decisions for you, at last.

AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 18

With worries on your mind, you’d be forgiven for being so distracted this month and yet everything is flowing rather merrily along. You’re working hard for your cash situation and your stamina and determination is high. Although romance is going well for you, a new friend brightens your day when discussions blossom.

PISCESFeb 19 - March 20

You continue to push hard to get things done even when the odds seem stacked against you at times! You have the dream and the inclination to really achieve results. A new partner – either in love or business – really helps you to open up and communicate; something that you’ve needed to do for such a very long time.

Proposed Development Near to

Watermead Park

Dear residents and users of Watermead Park,

You may be aware of the proposed development to build warehouses that encroach on Watermead Park land. The park is an oasis of calm in an otherwise highly developed area and it can do without further pressure from building work and increased traffic.

I and many others are extremely concerned that it will disrupt the tranquil nature of Watermeadand drive away some of the rare species of animal life found here. Please see local resident, Brendon Brockway’s, excellent article about non-human users of the park and join our campaign to save Watermead’s character by following the links and advice at the end of the article.

Discovering Watermead

As a regular user of Watermead Country Park and a keen photographer I can often be found taking pictures of the local flora and fauna. The parks plant and wildlife are gifts that continue to amaze me. I have a few favourite places that I always return to, some are in plain sight, and a few are off the beaten track. One spot that that’s just perfect for just stretching out and watching the world go by is near the old bird hide. Here I’ve watched Kingfishers dive for bounty, Cormorants nesting and feeding their young and Little Egrets performing acrobatics. In the same spot I had recently spotted Muntjac deer crossing the waters and I’d returned to see if I could get a few shots. Things were on the quiet side and the light was fading so I had decided to pack up.I had just seen some Coots panicking and scattering across the water when I suddenly realised why. As I stood up there was a sudden movement in the water and from around the corner, I heard a whoosh and then I saw it.For a split second I thought “what’s that” and then I realised it’s an Otter. This welcome visitor glided past me.Camera in hand I was panicking as the lens was too big and the Otter was too close, I could hear myself say “damn” as this was an opportunity missed but guess what, the Otter gods were on my side, it had turned around and as it drew level with me dived and then resurfaced about 25 to 30 feet away where it rested its head on the water.

I couldn’t tell if the Otter was looking at me with contempt or in disbelief that someone had dared to disturb it while it was hunting. Then suddenly it lifted its head hissed, turned and dived and was gone.

I walked home feeling honoured that I had encountered nature in its fullest sense, a truly wild animal in a habitat that supports it.

Since my encounter I’ve caught sight of an Otter on another four occasions, once for a split-second while in the same spot, twice in the River Soar and once by the car park at the top of King Lear Lake. Prior to this I’d heard a couple of people say that Otters had been seen up by King Lear Lake, I’d never seen any and to be honest I’d thought it would never happen. But why does this matter?I learned recently that there has been a proposal to develop land adjacent to Watermead that would see, if granted, the development of 70,600 square metres of warehouses for storage and distribution. The warehouses will be built right up to the canal along John Merrick Lake, finishing parallel with the car park at King Lear Lake.

If approved, the development of the site will involve the disruption and destruction of surrounding land and lakes, heavy construction traffic and ensuing noise and dust.It is likely that once they were up and running the operation of the facilities will be around the clock 24/7.The result of this will affect the balance and tranquil nature of the park which is likely to be transformed forever.

Not only does Watermead support so much wildlife but it also provides a release for so many, it was a valuable lifeline during the pandemic and continues to contribute to the health and well-being of so many. Its importance must never be underestimated.

But what can you do? If you haven’t already done so you can do one or more of the following:

Sign the petition at: Say no to warehouses around Watermead Country Park! | 38 Degrees

Get in touch with Charnwood Borough Councils Planning Departmentand let them know that you’re not happy.

Get in touch with your local Ward Councillorand sayNo to Development. Get in touch with your local Member of Parliament (Edward Argar MP).

And lastly, there’s currently a competition being run by Go Leicestershire who are asking the public to name their favourite local attraction in Leicestershire as part of the Leicestershire Promotions Tourism and Hospitality Awards. Let’s make Watermead the best day out in Leicestershire. You can nominate Watermead at:Best Day Out (goleicestershire.com)

Otters are listed as a rare and most threatened species and there is legislation that has been designed specifically to protect them.

Keep up to date with the campaign by going to: https://charnwoodclp.co.uk/

Let’s not let the developers drive our Otters away.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning part one. A Blockbuster dose of adrenaline

The Story

When an AI named ‘The Entity’ goes rogue, it’s a mission only Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and co can stop, but they aren’t the only ones after it.

Thoughts

“We live and die in the shadows” An ominous Ethan Hunt briefs us at the very start. Though I’d argue the massive action set pieces and city wide car chases might just tell a different story.

Ever since director McQuarrie joined Cruise and the Mission Impossible franchise back in 2015, the pair have continuously pushed the boundaries of action, creating bigger and crazier stunts for us to gawk at each time. Much like those two prior instalments, Dead Reckoning part one continues that tradition with; motorcycle cliff jumping, high speed train top fist fights, and so much more. It’s breakneck action, one that probably should supply you with a seat belt to avoid coming out of the theatre with whiplash.

Thankfully the movie recognises it’s a spy thriller first and foremost. Interwoven with the spectacle, is a genuine tale of suspense, littered with plenty of comedic breaks along the way. Providing you just enough time to catch your breath, raise the stakes, and strap you in, before pumping you with its next shot of adrenaline.

In a Nutshell

Simply put, Dead Reckoning part one is an absolutely relentless action affair, one that punches the accelerator and never lets up.

Thank you so much to our fabulous audiences who came along to see Pretzels for Dinner at the end of May and special thanks to the STN correspondent who gave us such a fabulous review! We have never played to a full house on opening night before and, from the proceeds, we were able to make a donation of £100.00 to Raising Health, a division of Leicestershire NHS. There were lots of returning audience members but also many new faces, who all said they would be back for more. Well now I can tell you what “more” is!

We shall be performing two of our favourite playwright’s inimitable comedies – ‘What’s for Pudding?’ and ‘Last Panto in Little Grimley’, both by David Tristram. His plays are such a joy to rehearse and performthere is more giggling and laughing than is good for us really!

Rehearsals have already started and the performances will take place from Tuesday 5th to Friday 8th December at The Old Chapel in Chapel Street LE7 1GN.

But there is something very important happening before that – 2023 is the year that QTs celebrate their 70th anniversary, and you are all invited to join us on Sunday 29th October from 2.00pm until 4.00pm, again at The Old Chapel.

It will be very informal but this will be a chance to meet people who have been members of the group for a very long time or a very short time, and all times in between! Look through our archives, costumes old and new, all sorts of memorabilia and enjoy a cup of tea, maybe a glass of wine and a slice of ‘birthday’ cake

See October’s issue of STN for more details!

This popular event returned to Syston on the weekend of the 12th and 13th August with a more spacious layout providing ample seating for people to purchase some of the delicious food and drink and enjoy the live music, while children could have fun on either the tea cup ride, trampolines or giant inflatable slide.

Shirley Franklin, President of New Barkby WI, welcomed members and one visitor to the institute’s August meeting. Jerusalem was sung and then business matters ensued.

The speaker for the evening was John Parnell from Nuneaton who spoke of the healthy benefits Hula Hooping can help the body. He demonstrated the way in which the rhythm of using a hoop improves the hips, back and core as the movement progresses.

The event was visited by our MP Edward Argar on Saturday whom we photographed with Buckley one of the new owners of the event. Then on Sunday we photographed Buckley with the Mayor of Charnwood Cllr. Margaret Smidowicz and Chairman of the Town Council Cllr Mark Cherry when they visited the event. They spent time walking round and talking to many of the stall holders.

Hula Hooping became popular after it is believed that sailors watched Hula dancing in Hawaii, and so with hoops the exercise evolved. Hoops used to be made of cane but now they are made from plastic. With a smaller hoop the movement made is slower than when using a larger one. John demonstrated the art as he played a taped song he had written and with just a few minutes instruction, five ‘volunteers’: Carol, Dawn, Julie, Louisa and Wendy were brave enough to have a go and soon became conversant with the exercise. John has appeared on the TV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and teaches in schools and organisations, groups and holiday clubs so is kept very busy. A pleasant subject as Wednesday had been designated as ‘National Play Day’.

The vote of thanks was given by Angela Montague. The competition ‘A toy I played with’ was won by Louisa who brought along a game she had played with as a child.

Joy Goulden won the raffle and along with Alma Wright helped with the refreshments.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 6th September at 7.30pm in Syston Community Centre when the subject will be ‘Patchwork for Pleasure’ with Carolyn Boulter. Visitors are always welcome to attend.

Citizens Advice

Charnwood

Citizens Advice Charnwood urges people who are on State Pensions and have a low income to check and see whether they are entitled to Pension Credit.

According to figures gathered by the DWP last June, an estimated £1.7 billion was left unclaimed.

Pension Credit is for people who have reached state pension age to boost their income based on how much money they have coming in. It tops up their weekly income to the amount the government says they need to live on:£201.05 if you’re single £306.85 if you have a partner.

Pension Credit is not taxable and can be paid to homeowners, tenants and people in other circumstances such as living with family or friends. When someone receives Pension Credit they also get help with other things like housing benefits, council tax, NHS costs, support for mortgage interest costs and more.

It is administered by the Pension Service, part of the DWP. Anyone who has reached State Pension age can apply. If they have a partner they must also be of state pension age. If you live with a partner you’ll need to give the Pension

Service the same information about them. You’ll also need to provide information of anyone else living with you, such as details about any benefits they’re receiving. You won’t need to give detail about their income.

There are two parts to Pension Credit - Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. You might get one or both parts.

Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to the minimum amount. If your income is higher, you might still be eligible for Pension Credit if you have a disability, you care for someone, you have savings or you have housing costs.

If you have £10,000 or less in savings and investments this will not affect your Pension Credit.

If you have more than £10,000, every £500 over £10,000 counts as £1 income a week. For example, if you have £11,000 in savings, this counts as £2 income a week.

Savings Credit is a small top-up for people who have a modest amount of income or savings. It’s only available if you reached State Pension age before 6th April 2016.

Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Charnwood

I recently had the privilege of being one of the judging panel for a local school art competition, in nearby Queniborough. The pictures all highlighted the diversity of our natural environment, and how precious that natural environment is. It is an issue that I have always taken a very close interest in, given my track record as Syston's local MP in seeking to protect, and enhance where possible, our natural environment. One of the issues that has previously been raised with me as impacting negatively on our local natural environment is that of discarded litter. Like many local people, in the past I have on a number of occasions, found myself in a high-vis top, standing in a ditch, or on a roadside verge, at a litter pick collecting discarded beer cans, food wrappers and assorted other pieces of day-today rubbish that people had, without a second thought, discarded along the lanes and verges of roads in our area. While it is fantastic to see all our towns and villages, not just on one occasion each year, but throughout the year coming together to take pride in, and shared responsibility for, our communities, it is a shame that litter picks are still necessary at all.

As I have written before, sadly, too many people, often just passing through in their car, who when they no longer need something or have a food wrapper, instead of doing what most of us would do and take it home to the bin, simply throw it out of the car window. Maybe another symptom of a 'throw-away society', or a lack of people taking responsibility for our environment and their own behaviour, but something that has to change. We need to work to instil that sense of personal responsibility and pride in our countryside and our villages and towns like Syston, not just in those who already live there and already care about them, but in everyone in this country who visits or passes through them. It is not someone else's responsibility to pick it up, it is all of our responsibilities not to drop it in the first place. While catching offenders isn’t always easy, it is important that when people are caught, local Councils have the powers they need to issue tough fines for fly-tipping and littering. Therefore I very much welcomed the

Government’s recent announcement that the penalties local councils can apply for litter, graffiti and fly-tipping, behaviour that spoils our streets and villages and harms nature, are all set to rise as part of a crackdown on antisocial behaviour. The new upper limit to fines will deter people from harming our public spaces in the first place, and ensure that those who continue to offend face tougher consequences. Following the changes:

· The maximum amount those caught fly-tipping could be fined will increase from £400 to £1,000

· The maximum amount those who litter or graffiti could be fined will increase from £150 to £500

· The maximum amount those who breach their household waste duty of care could be fined will increase from £400 to £600.

It's right that, as well as tackling the litter itself, we do more to tackle those who drop it, and their thoughtlessness, with tougher penalties. These higher fines are an important step by the Government in providing further protections for our natural environment and support for nature – I hope that they will give people pause for thought and will help change behaviour, as we all have a part to play in keeping our land green, pleasant and litter-free! I also wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate the organisers of the recent Food Gusto event in Syston's Central Park, which I very much enjoyed going along to. There were a fantastic range of food and drink stalls, including small, local businesses and I hope that they all did good trade, and that everyone who went along to visit the festival enjoyed it as much as I did. It was another example of the things Syston does so well, putting on great events that bring the community together, and I very much look forward to the Syston Summer Fayre in September. As always, if, as Syston's local MP you feel I can be of assistance to you, please do email me atEdward. argar.mp@parliament.ukor write to me at Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.

Why Do I Volunteer

When I retired in 2020 I wanted to be able to volunteer in some way – I wasn’t sure in what way but saw that the Syston and District Volunteer Centre needed drivers. As an experienced driver this would suit me down to the ground.

But then you do the runs and you realise just how much the clients appreciate what you are doing – nice to go home with a smile on your face even when times are tough – or rather especially when times are tough.

It is such a great feeling to know that you have helped people who need it for no more reward than a pleasant smile and a thank you.

In the time I have been a volunteer driver, demand has risen dramatically, even now doubling up on some runs – this can present it’s own problems!

The needs are ever increasing with the reduction in central services such as patient transport.

So if you have the time and the desire to help others please consider joining us as a volunteer driver – you will enjoy it and you will be helping a lot of local people in the process.

Community Recognition for Work of Volunteer Centre

support from local groups, in recognition of the services we provide, is especially gratifying and acts as significant motivation for the small team of volunteers, especially our volunteer drivers, staff involved on a day-to-day basis and my fellow Trustees.

Picture shows Trustee Treasurer, Christine Ringrose, receiving a cheque for £2,057 from Karen Bland, Ladies’ Captain at Beedles Lake Golf Club. The money was raised jointly by the Men’s and Ladies’ Sections of the Club, as both Captain’s agreed to nominate the Syston and District Volunteer Centre as their chosen charity for the year.

Further recognition of the valuable range of services offered to the local community by the Centre has been confirmed by Bradgate Masonic Lodge who have promised a donation ‘in the region of £4800’ expressing the hope this sum will “help (the Centre) to continue the fantastic work you and your colleagues are doing.”

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Paul Lomas, says: “Such generous

I am pleased to be able to report that at the AGM held on 15th August, the current team of Trustees was returned to office for a further year of service. We dedicate ourselves to continuing to provide and develop a programme of services responsive to local needs in line with our mission statement – “to promote and sustain personal independence, community and family ties through the provision of subsidised transport and other volunteer-led services.”

A team from Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association (LRYSA) is celebrating after scooping trophies at a prestigious national regatta.

More than 170 competitors aged 8 to 18 took part in the five-day NSSA (National School Sailing Association) National Youth Regatta at Draycote Water in Warwickshire.

Among them were LRYSA’s young sailors who completed up to 18 races each with a range of conditions to test their skills from flat calms to wind and rain. The event had race courses for different boats and abilities, with LYRSA’s sailors battling it out in both the Championship fleets and also the coached Regatta fleet for less

Colin Magee, LRYSA Chairman and Training Principal, added: “We are extremely proud of our young team,

With over 20 years experience we have built a reputation you can trust!

competing at a national regatta in sometimes harsh conditions and never giving up. Congratulations to our trophy winners and well done to all of our young sailors who took part and made the most of the week to develop their skills.”

LRYSA is based at John Merricks Lake in Watermead Country Park and its alumni includes the late John Merricks, a 1996 Olympic sailing silver medallist.

Providing opportunities for local youngsters who may not otherwise have the chance to experience sailing, LRYSA is currently running its summer programme offering courses for children who want to learn how to sail during the school holidays.

Syston Sirens Reach End Of Season Finals Day

Despite the awful summer weather and the threat of relegation hanging over the club there is some light in the darkness. Firstly the Sirens, led by Hannah Driver, were crowned joint champions with Bharat Sports of the EMWCL Softball Division 1 South. They will now contest the play-offs at the Incora County Ground Derby on Sunday 10th September.

Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League. Clearly this may be of benefit to all members, spectators and visitors to the ground should, heaven forbid, an emergency arise. In other respects things have certainly not been going to plan. The loss of matches against Oakham and Langtons to the weather has not made Syston’s fight to avoid relegation any easier. Then the match against Barrow Town was lost from a very winnable position. Barrow were dismissed for 207 with Umar Razzaq bowling superbly to take 5-31. Syston in reply reached 101-1 and looked well on course for a much needed victory. However, once Umar (46) and Nikesh Sanjani (31) were parted, the innings folded to 158 all out. The win Syston desperately wanted finally came against Kegworth. Syston struggled to 160 all out with only Faisal Jariwala (41) and Mo Pardesi (47 not out) making significant contributions, After the break Syston bowled and fielded superbly and with three wickets each for Umar and Mo, Kegworth were dismissed for just 145.

Secondly the club have had a defibrillator, pictured above, installed in the clubhouse. This has been made possible by a very generous grant of £650 from East Midlands Airport Community Fund and a further grant of £250 from The

The 2nd XI were sitting comfortably in mid table but the weather and a loss of form have seen them slip down the table. Matches against Lutterworth 2nd, Medbourne and Market Harborough were all rained

off, then after dismissing Birstall Village for just 151, the 2nd XI could only muster 114 in reply. Similarly they bowled out Thorpe Arnold for 139 with Dharmist Bathia and Ketan Dudharejia each taking four wickets but were all out for just 86 with Dharmist the only player to reach double figures.

The Sunday XI are having one of their usual topsy turvy seasons. The match against Ilston Abey was lost completely to the weather and the match against Belvoir was abandoned at the break. They did however manage to get a game in against Barkby. The visitors were bowled out for 116 with Ben Tebbutt taking 4-16 and Syston squeezed home to win by 4 wickets with Yash Kapdi hitting 40 not out. Roger Pole.
