Wow What a day! Summer Fayre Success

On Saturday 31st August, the annual Summer Fayre took place on Central Park after a long time in the planning, it was good to see all the stallholders arriving and setting up ready to open to the public at 12 noon.

The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE accompanied by the Mayoress Julie Ellerbeck and the Vice Chairman Cllr Satish Visavadia, officially opened the Summer Fayre and then spent about two hours walking around the fayre and meeting the stall holders and even making a few purchases. The Mayor thoroughly enjoyed her visit and thanked the committee for all their hard work in getting this event organised for the benefit of the people of Syston and surrounding villages.

Local Calor Stockist

The performers on the two stages entertained the audience all afternoon and it was great to see people had brought chairs and blankets and stayed all afternoon, which began very warm but got a little cooler when it became overcast, but fortunately, the rain stayed away! The committee would like to thank its sponsors for this year, Millington’s Travel, DR Electric, Designer Daisies and Syston Town News. We would also like to thank everyone who took part to make this the best day since we took over this event in 2019.

All the stall holders, charity stalls, group stalls, craft and small business stalls, the beer and cider, and gin bars, the mini fair, the scouts and the performers who entertained all afternoon, said they had a great day and raised a lot of money for the charities taking part. A big thank you to them for coming along.

Thank you to the Syston Band who started the event and the Swing Band that headlined and closed the event. All the wonderful dance groups: Studio 79, QDC, Goscote Dance; LVT Dance and Singers, Bollyark Dance, the Dance Academy. Plus, Blue Wave Martial Arts, Soloist Adele Rose Wilkinson, and Syston Scout and Guide Band.

All our wonderful volunteers on the day who help to set up and take down stalls on the day, the stage crew and our marshals who helped guide people on and off the park safely, we couldn’t do this without you all, so thank you. Plus all the litter pickers who kept the park clean during and after the event.

But most of all a huge thank you to you all, everyone who came along and supported this FREE event for our community organised by a voluntary group Continues on page 2

Perfect 10 +2

How many of us have heard the term “Once in a Blue Moon”? You might even have used the expression yourself at some point. Well, it puts in several appearances throughout our production of “Perfect10”. It is the title of the second anthology of winning plays from the Ilkley Playhouse Writing Festival 2022. Rehearsals are now in full swing and, from a total of 25 scenes available to us, Leigh and I finally managed to settle on 12 short plays but it wasn’t easy! To be perfectly honest, we could have chosen about 16 but that would have meant very late nights for everyone. In order to make this production a bit ‘different’, Leigh is adding some musical numbers, having chosen songs which are relevant to the scene that the audience has either just watched or is about to watch. A mixture of solos, duets and group numbers, I have really enjoyed listening to the music rehearsals whilst rehearsing the play scenes in the room next door.

Our four new actors - Amy, Andy M, Jackie and Jess - have settled in really well and we are enjoying working with them. The other members of the team are Andy Biggins, Cathy Rackstraw, Donna Gunn, Gillian Bowler, Jo Gallagher, Jules Richards, Matt Ormerod, Ranata Maynard, Ron Berry and Toby Garner, names which I’m sure you will recognise from previous productions.

The production will be performed from Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th of November at The Old Chapel in

Rather than give you a brief synopsis of every scene, I’ve decided to give you a few (very few!) snippets from a few scenes. Hopefully they will whet your whistle and you will be intrigued to find out if your guesses are right!

Marking 4 Years of

On Wednesday 11th September, we celebrated four years since the start of the MADS (Mental health, Anxiety & Depression Support) Group in Syston that is run by Bev & Deanna Johnson (pictured above), George & Lillie Blount and Mark Connah with remote support. The MADS Group is there to help anyone with mental health implications or even loneliness. We do our best to provide a warm and safe space for the community

We aren’t counsellors or mental health professionals but we can happily signpost people to those we know who can provide that professional help and care.

Tracey from Syston’s Tesco Store, had donated some party food for us and we celebrated with our members with a Karaoke (pictured top right*) provided by Carl Petch of Syston Brookside Working

Men’s Club (WMC). Several members found the confidence to get up and sing in front of the group and one young lady in particular at the age of 21 sang multiple times and really wowed the entire group. When she started our group she never spoke a word to anyone, and over time, her confidence has grown. This was a perfect gift to us at the group as it really showed us that we really do make a difference. If she or her family read this, we want them to know just how proud we are of her progress since joining the group. She really is a ray of sunshine.

We plan to do more over the next year or so to raise money for our group and possibly run various events. Keep your eyes peeled. All money raised goes towards providing everything for our members and the hire of The Brookside Suite at the WMC. All we ask is that members pay a minimum of £1 to help us with the running of the group.

We also had a stall at the recent Syston Summer Fayre where we sold various items and raffled off a variety of items. This stall was run by Bev Johnson and Mark Connah. I dipped in and out to help when I could as I was also on Stn duty to make sure we had some good photos of the event. We want to thank everyone

who helped us reach the amazing amount of £216.00!

We are eternally grateful to the community of Syston and here’s to beginning the next year of our MADS Group journey!

S & J News

We have been requested by a number of residents to deliver papers to them following the ceasing of their deliveries from their previous supplier.

Tales from the Plot, October

2024

Autumn is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, there’s less to harvest as our plants slow down in response to the shorter days and the grass is covered by dew which is increasingly reluctant to clear apart from on the sunniest days.

normally manage to keep lettuce growing in a sheltered area right up until Christmas and beyond - it’s amazing how hardy lettuce is. It’s now the last chance this year for transplanting spring cabbages, plant them in ground that has been well firmed and cover with nets to protect from birds, some plot holders sowa couple of short rows of winter hardy peas and broad beans towards the end of the month to provide you with an early crop next spring although I have to say I’ve never been that successful but I will try with broad beans this year.

Remember that the clocks go back an hour at the end of this month so we must make the most of the daylight hours. It’s time to strip outdoor tomatoes: those that are not good enough for the table we usually trim, chop and put in plastic bags, the equivalent to a tin of tomatoes about 400g to each bag. These can be frozen and are great throughout the rest of the year, just to add to a pizza, chilli or a bolognese sauce etc. Green tomatoes can still be ripened but don’t forget to check on them from time to time!

Main crop potatoes that are in the ground are usually lifted by the end of the month using a potato or garden fork to lift them to prevent damaging the tubers, however I’ve never managed it without stabbing what are usually the best examples LOL! Harvest the last of the runner bean crop for this year and any that have gone over place in a tray and leave to dry out then pop the seeds out and keep in a paper bag for next year - I do this every year with french beans, runner beans and pea seeds, there’s no need to buy every year. I remember a plot holder that had a marvellous crop of runner beans year-onyear he told me he hadn’t bought any bean seeds for 20 years!

Last year I grew some purple climbing French beans, I enjoyed them more than I anticipated, left some on the plants, dried them out in my cold frame then popped the seeds out - I had enough to supply about 20 other plot holders with seeds and shall do the same this year, I need to learn more about saving seed from other vegetables.

If all is going well there’s still plenty of fresh vegetables for the table, Savoy cabbages, carrots, swede, parsnips etc. I

You can sow garlic now, I have been told you sow garlic on the shortest day and the harvest it on the longest day however last year I planted mine towards the end of October into large 60ltr tubs and had better results than I’d ever managed before so I will be repeating that this year. If your ground is heavy, rough dig over and leave it in lumps or ridges to be broken down gradually by the winter frosts and rain, we are lucky in Syston that our ground is sandy and light, it’s still heavily debated between plot holders as to whether there is a need to winter dig however you need to keep off the soil if it is wet and don’t be tempted dig it if it is frozen. When the soil is frozen hard it is a good opportunity to cart barrows of manure or compost over it.

It’s time to protect the more tender plants using horticultural fleece. The last couple of winters have been quite hard - be prepared to protect chard plants, spinach, winter lettuce, peas, broad beans and any other crops that you are overwintering from the worst of the winter weather. Keep some fleece, plastic or have cloches nearby ready to use. Many of your plants will start dying back and losing their leaves this month, collect these fallen leaves to make leaf mould to get even more use out of your crops. Take down the runner bean poles, cleaning the soil off the bottom of them before storing somewhere cool and airy ready to use next year.

Stake brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants to prevent them from being blown over in strong winds, it is also worthwhile dragging soil up around the base of the plants to give them extra support … it’s time to start thinking about next year, make a list of what worked and what didn’t, I’m optimistic I always believe next year will be better than thelast lol! Beardsley’s Tea Room Update

Whilst not quite the sunny summer we'd been hoping for this year we welcomed the milder days andloved having a full garden once again! It seems now however like a distant memory as we're fully embracing all thingsautumnal. It's such a lovely time of year to be able to work with an abundance of seasonal homegrown produce and helps toget the creative juices well and truly flowing as to what can be cooked up with them. We've switched back to our winter menu as of October, welcomingthe return of our Aga pressed toasties and homemade soup. Rest assured - our quiche is remaining a fixture as well as I daren’t face the wrath of so many as last year when we removed it for the winter months.

We've also tweaked our opening hours a little for the ‘winter’, increasing our breakfast service on Fridays and Saturdays by opening an hour earlier at 9am.

Currently, we're in the middle of our Autumn afternoon tea offering which will be followed by our Festive menu throughout November and December.

Both menus can be found on our website at www.beardsleystearoom.

co.uk, and as always, we will be extending our hours to offer evening afternoon tea bookings the week before Christmas.

The first date released is Wednesday the 18th of December, give us a call for more info and to make your reservation. With Christmas falling mid week this year, we've decided to open Sunday 22nd 9.30am to 1.30pm for a festive brunch, after which we will be closed untilthe New Year.

We will be releasing the festive brunch menu Mid Octoberfor essential pre-booking.

Gosh, I feel like there's been quite a lot to fill you in on this month, we hope to welcome you soon for cosy catch ups and warming treats.

Classic Car Run

Sunday 1st September saw the tenth Annual Classic Car Run, organised by local residents Terry Farmer and Vicki Friend, take place. As usual the start was arranged at Stonehurst Family Farm and Museum, thanks to the generosity of the owner, Tom Duffin. Hot drinks and the chance to buy a bacon cob made for a good gathering in the courtyard, while waiting to register and collect a Route Book, showing the route to follow across country to Shackerstone Railway Station, the midway stop. Shackerstone Station had trains running that day, adding to the interest.

The museum was open, as was the souvenir shop and converted coach saleroom. The Victorian Café did a roaring trade selling drinks, snacks and homemade cakes.

Then it was off again, across small roads to reach Moira Furnace the final destination. The cars had the honour of parking along the pathway

to show the many different marques of vehicle. Boat trips were running and many participants took full advantage. Once again, the café was very busy though many had brought a picnic.

There had been a worrying forecast for the weather but we were so lucky

that it never rained and at Moira the sun shone.

The bonus for all this enjoyment was the fact that an amazing £1,600 was raised for the Rainbow’s Hospice for Children and Young People!

Green Party Councillors Update

This month we were pleased to see that the Environment Agency has started some of the work to start cutting back the badly overgrown weeds in the channel of the brook. However, there are still trees and weeds growing from the bank so we will continue to monitor and chase up until it is a decent standard. The Environment Agency will also de-silt the brook this Autumn/Winter and will also do some clearance work further down the brook in the Pembroke Lane area.

We have been working with the resident led flood group to raise questions and press for answers over responsibilities around maintenance of the brook and the pavements, and are starting to see some positive direction. We have asked for the overgrown vegetation on the railings and footpaths to be tackled, and a long term plan to manage this. The footpaths are also broken and dangerous. There were plans drawn up in 2022 to resurface the side by Specsavers, but this went on hold. After some chasing up, we have now been told that the ownership of the area is in question.

The lack of clarity around who is responsible for various sections of

land has been one of the most frustrating aspects of trying to make sure this whole area is being looked after. Despite this, we are pushing for a solution and some action, as it simply cannot be left as it is any longer.

The other main issue residents are raising with us at the moment, is the proposal to build an additional 960 houses to the South East of Syston, near Barkby. Andy has lodged an objection and will be representing residents, who have serious worries about the lack of services, flood risk and the obvious traffic issues that this development will only make worse. Whilst we recognise that housing is needed, we seem to be taking a huge number in Syston and the surrounding villages. We inherited a challenging planning situation, making it difficult to stop these planned developments outright, but we will continue to speak up on residents’ concerns and try and get the best outcome from a bad situation.

Malc’s East Leake Sprint Triathlon Challenge

After seeing a friend receive his medal for completing last year’s event, I was determined I could do the same. Training started with the ‘Couch to 5k’ plan alongside weekly swimming sessions to try to get fit enough to do the Triathlon. As the months passed and with my enthusiasm waning, I realised that I needed a cause to support to make me carry on with the exhaustive training…

It had to be LOROS and this gave me the motivation I needed to complete my Triathlon challenge. I know of the compassionate care and support they give to patients, and their families, and they rely on fundraising to continue their wonderful work.

I’ve received many donations already, for which I’m very grateful, I hope I can rely on more support to raise as much as I can for such a worthy cause. I completed the challenge on 29th September, but if you can support me with a donation then please visit: JustGiving.com search LOROS Malcolm Woodward Thank you, Malcolm

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery

Well, it’s up. Well done to everyone involved. I believe that there are only two green flags in Charnwood this year and our lovely cemetery has one of them. Now we need to keep improving to keep the flag.

Hope everyone had the best summer they could. We have got an easier job with the weeds now – just the runways to sort out and try and get rid of the ground weed that is

spreading. If you are interested in joining the Friends of Syston Cemetery please contact us via Syston Town Council as we are looking to increase the number of friends helping us.

The quick succession of chapel displays start again now, starting with the autumn one – hope you like it. We are still trying to sort out the LED candles for the weekends. In other words we’re trying to get the real candles back. Contact Syston Town Council, see number below, if you have any ideas to help us along please.

Again if you wish to donate a rose tree in memory of a loved one please speak to Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council, on 0116 260 7150, likewise if you would like to hire the chapel.

Happy Retirement

On the 13th September Ree Nugent, premises officer at the Syston Community Centre, handed back her keys to Syston Town Council after 22 years opening and closing the community centre for the various groups that hire the rooms each week day and weekends.

The various regular groups have appreciated her dedication to her position and said she would go above and beyond her duties to make sure the groups were looked after. Ree will continue with her dog warden role with Syston Town Council. She is also a Flood Warden, a voluntary role, which she has done since 2016. Again in this role she goes above and beyond to help residents stay safe, an example of this was in January while out as flood warden helping other residents, her own home was being flooded. She had to return to her home try to rescue her own belongings! A very stressful time for her, her family and everyone who was flooded.

The community want to say a huge thank you, to you, Ree for going above and beyond in your long service and wish you a happy retirement.

Grow Give Live

Grow Give Live had a great day at the Syston Summer Fayre on 31st August. It was lovely to meet so many people; thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, buy a raffle ticket or pick up some produce brought from the allotment.

We are delighted with how much produce we’ve had this year; we only started working on the plot in February, but with the help of our regular volunteers and visitors, we’ve had a fantastic haul of potatoes, apples and pears, with a magnificent pumpkin getting ready for Halloween too!

We’re still busy working up there every Friday from 10.00am –12.00pm, everyone is welcome to pop along and see what we’re doing There’s no pressure to know about gardening, or do any hard digging, just come along to have a cuppa and a chat and see what we’re about –we’re the first plot on the left hand side as you go into the allotment.

On our other sites around Syston, we’d like to say huge thank you to Issy Rose who has been volunteering with us for her Duke of Edinburgh award; Issy has been looking after the plot at Scotia Press all summer, keeping it watered and the weeds in check – we had some lovely potatoes and carrots from there.

New Headteachers Join Local Secondary Schools

Wreake Valley Academy and The Roundhill Academy now each have a new Headteacher in post. At Wreake Ben Rackley, pictured above on the right, former Deputy Head at Gartree High School joined the school for the start of the new academic year. At The Roundhill Academy Natalie Teece, pictured above on the left, was appointed as Headteacher last December.

Wreake Valley Academy

Ben Rackley commented ‘As the new Headteacher at Wreake Valley I believe there is an opportunity to have a significant impact on the outcomes of the students. I can see that there are many positives on which to build, as well as opportunities to make significant steps forward. Throughout my career I have committed myself to the school and community I serve. I believe it is vitally important to lead with clarity of vision for the whole school community’.

Ben said ‘At Wreake Valley Academy

there is a belief in the power of education to create opportunities for students that will travel with them beyond their time at school.

He added ‘Students can and will contribute to the future, the reality is that they have significant challenges that they must overcome to enable them to become the future entrepreneurs, doctors, artists, engineers, and successful members of society. Our job at Wreake Valley will be to ensure they are ready to contribute in creating a community; locally and beyond’.

The Roundhill Academy

Natalie Teece, who has previously held a range of leadership positions explained that ‘The Roundhill Academy had experienced a degree of turbulence prior to me joining the school and I was keen to reinstate the excellent reputation the school deserved’.

Natalie commented ‘as soon as I stepped inside the building it was clear that staff were very proud of the school. I am fortunate to have a great team around me who share my ambition. Since joining we have worked at pace to re-build systems, ensuring that students feel nurtured and safe in school. The building feels calm and purposeful now. We also want students to have the opportunity to experience the very best quality of education and outcomes when they leave us in Year 11. We have a strong teaching team of subject experts, and we are going from strength to strength. She added ‘Roundhill is in a strong position now and I am very excited to be a part of its future journey’.

G E GAMBLE & SONS

The Headteachers both agreed that there were exciting times ahead for the two schools, which would continue to work closely together.

Timeless Connexions

On Thursday 5th September a new cafe dedicated to people living with dementia and their loved ones opened at the Meeting place @ The Hub in the Methodist Church Centre.

Local social prescriber Raj Chavda and the local NHS team Tracy Piper, Melton, Syston Primary Care Network Manager, and Michelle

McWeeney, Local area co-ordinator for Syston and volunteers helped to set the room with the tables with beautiful table clothes, China tea cups and plates which made it very welcoming. Every table was full and there was lots of chatter. Raj gave a short speech to open the cafe and explaining how the cafe had come about and that it will be open each week between 1.30pm and 4.30pm, £3 per person includes unlimited tea and coffee. Attendees can participate in monthly events and activities to enrich the mind and spirit. He thanked Tracy Piper and Michelle McWeeney for their tireless efforts and collaboration behind the scenes saying they have been the cornerstone of this dementia-friendly cafe and said it was their passions and commitment that has helped to make this a reality.

Afternoon tea was served and they had some music too. This was a lovely afternoon and we hope the new Timeless Connexions cafe continues to support everyone touched by dementia in a friendly and supportive way.

October

Jeanne Douglas offers psychic readings in Palmistry, Tarot, Crystal and Personal Astrology. Her telephone numbers are 01664 562 471 or 07931 293 855.

ARIES March 21 - April 19

The Full Moon in your sign this month sees the end of some long-standing and painful personal issue and this gives you a new lease of life! Excellent communication with your partner gives your whole life a good airing and –overall – allows you to finally move forward. You now start to make strong definite plans that are feasible.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

Some fabulous idea of yours comes suddenly to fruition as others decide to take it up and run with it! A longcherished dream has frustrated you but now you see endless possibilities in sight. Social obligations weigh you down as you focus on completing tasks that others expect and won't let you duck out of. So prioritise for a while.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

Life continues to unfold in a grandiose way as opportunities flow your way! So most exciting indeed. Certain social links however are destined to move on out of your life which makes you philosophical but this is fate in action and just needs accepting. Your confidence improves to the point that you boldly strike out and move on.

CANCER June 21 - July 22

Your flair and determination puts the end to difficult work issues that have caused you some anguish. This changes the way that you view things and life now will start to flow a little more smoothly. You take time out to relax and calm down so as to take the sting out of things, otherwise you find that you'll go round in circles.

LEO July 23 - August 22

You hit a quiet period in your life and this may come initially as a surprise as you then learn to make the most of it! So a short holiday is likely or some sort of break from the usual hustle and bustle. Deep down you’re thinking ahead and making plans and see that you may have to abandon some of these ideas that are weighing you down.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

Others look to you to help them with their commitments and responsibilities. This weighs heavily upon you and yet you continue to do what you can and come up with the goods! Some personal upset finally gets sorted out as life moves on and a page is turned in the ‘book of life'. You apply logic to your finances.

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

You approach all things with a sharp and keen mind, with practicalities uppermost in your mind! So a great deal gets done and you enjoy spending cash on improving your dayto-day living. The Full Moon opposite your sign this month forces you to contemplate your close connections and to be completely honest.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21

With Venus in your sign this month, you dazzle and charm everyone that you meet! This certainly draws admirers in all shapes and forms and yet communication is what you really crave. So romance comes in the guise of chats and discussions that enhance your knowledge and free you from all prior misconceptions.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21

You follow your dreams and they entrance you further! Deep down, you know that you've got to be practical and do the sensible thing. Someone somewhere is thinking of you and you have a secret admirer as it turns out. Changes on the domestic front are likely as emotional problems are dramatically solved.

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19

Some deep psychological block gets removed suddenly and dramatically this month and obstacles are altered to allow you to move ahead. Others however seem caught up strongly with their own wants and needs and this complicates things somewhat. So you prefer to stand back in order to avoid arguments.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18

Your day-to-day routine changes unexpectedly and this is a relief being as it is all positive - although also quite dramatic all at the same time. You have to spend cash on practical repairs and much-needed issues so that you life continues to flourish. You take time out to focus on a personal hobby and this relaxes you.

PISCES Feb 19 - March 20

You continue to keep going, showing incredible courage and stamina at times! You feel that you have no choice if your finances are to continue to hold together and do what you want them to. However your popularity is starting to soar and social happiness catches you unawares! You spend time doing your favourite things.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News

Parish Barbeque

Revd Ros and her husband Phill generously hosted a Parish barbeque for the sister parishes of St Hilda’s East Goscote and St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Syston. Then original plan was to hold the event in the garden of the Rectory but the good old British weather prevented the outdoor experience!

Instead, tables and chairs had been arranged in the church. This didn’t prevent people having a really enjoyable time. There was a most sumptuous choice of burgers and sausages. Several people had donated salads to go with the meat course. This was followed by delicious donated paddings.

Parishioners of both churches were most grateful for the generosity of Revd Ros and her family.

Syston Summer Fayre

of volunteers who helped run the stall and we are very grateful for that support.

The activity, decorating stones, allowed us to share our Christian values of being kind, loving each other, and being supportive in difficult times. There was the option to hide their stones for others to find, or to take their stones and give them to another person, hoping that their messages would ripple out across Syston and beyond. Praise in the Park

Service of Loving RemembranceSunday 3rd November 4.00pm

On Sunday 3rd November at 4.00pm there will be a Service of Loving Remembrance to remember those we love but see no longer. This will be a gentle and reflective space with an opportunity to light a candle in memory of loved ones who have gone before us.Everyone is welcome.

St Peter and St Paul Pre-school

Over the summer the pre-school has had its roof replaced.

On Saturday 31st August Churches Together in Syston met for Praise in the Park. The sun shone as we worshipped together and it was a truly joyful occasion. The theme this year was peace and love. Revd Ros gave a short reflection on God’s great love for everyone and we concluded with a prayer for peace for our world. We were joined by Syston Happy Ukulele Band who got everybody singing and dancing! Our next Churches Together event will be Carols in the Squaremore details to follow.

Families@4

As a church we decided that, this year, we wanted a space just for us, as we have occupied spaces in the Help is at Hand marquee in past years. We set out on display our rocks for decorating, pens, the Baptism and Wedding packs and our leaflets about our family Sunday events.

We attracted a wide range of people and ages, and engaged in some valuable conversations, accompanied by our Vicar Revd Ros. We had a rota

David Seabrook Mortgage Broker

For our first family service of the new school year we chose the theme of New Beginnings. We listened to the story of Noah and reflected on new beginnings in our own lives. We also had lots of fun making rain with shaving foam and food colouring and painting rainbows to remind us of God’s love.

Our next Families@4 service will be at 16:00 onSunday 13th October. We meet in the church hall opposite the church. This is a relaxed and informal service so do come along and join the fun.

The photographs above show the work in progress and when it was completed.

The pre-school want to thank the contractors as well as all the parents and carers, past and present who have donated to our fundraising initiatives enabling us to afford to get the roof replaced and create a Preschool that will be able to serve the Syston community for many more years.

As a charity we have had to raise all

the funds and the generosity of the contractors Tom Stothard from Stotto 1 Ltd. who worked with our management team and our committee to reduce costs.

The staff team also gave up some of their holiday to repaint the playroom and help create a warm inviting sea themed bathroom, see picture below left, which has been a huge success with the children.

We still have a few spaces left for children aged 3 and above if interested parents would like to contact the manager Kerry Gamble 0116 269 8638.

Kerry St.Peters and St.Paul Pre-school

Time Flies!

Wow, where does time go it’s certainly flown by this year so far, we remember how it always seemed to pass much slower as a child!

What’s been the main topic of conversation, go on, have a guess, you give up, you know it, yes (no prizes though) who is doing what and WHEN in the Barkby Brook’?! Answer, the Environment Agency (likely a sub contractor) are removing the blockages (de-silting) in agreement with the Borough and County Councils (RMA’s), but everything's been crossed for so long to see the WHEN our circulation is in danger of being cut off! We really hoped the blockages would’ve ‘finally‘ been removed before you read this (have they), things change sometimes after we’ve met the papers deadline, so between us and the Syston Community Flood Group we’ll be getting as much information out to you as soon as possible (though when the brooks actually cleared we’ll be having a party to celebrate, but shush, don’t tell the neighbours). Its been a long hard slog getting ‘authorities’ to communicate (with us and even each other at times) there was, possibly still is, other areas in Leicestershire that needs their attention (so understandably their officers are a tad busy), but rest assured we’ll continue chasing for updates on any work and share them.

Nearly there, you can put the kettle back on in a minute. Another shout out to ‘Syston Community Flood Group’ (SCFG) who continue to ‘raise awareness’ and are now on Facebook (appreciate some

positive feedback or a like/share if you’ve time) you can still contact the group on systonfloodgroup@gmail.com if preferred. Nearly there again, but not quite, and in the ‘opinion‘ of so so many Syston residents you talk to, our own town councils inability to show ‘empathy‘ (yes empathy) has been really hard to get your head around, we acknowledge that like affected residents, they have been totally out of their depth at times, ‘everyone, including us gets that’, but no one knew what to do or where to go in an emergency did they, affected resident’s needed help in any way, shape or form, and turned to ‘their council first’, sadly the ‘not our responsibility’ on loop is what they got, and that will be a talking point long after the brook is cleared (positive communication is key, let’s hope for residents and their town council it changes for the better)!

Here’s to a dryer winter folks, but remember 20 years of little or no adequate maintenance in the Barkby Brook (neglect by authorities) got us in this mess, so once the watercourse is cleared, don't let ‘Barkby Brook and the Town of Syston’ be forgotten again!! Oh, and many thanks for readers feedback, our original intention was just to have a one off rant about our own very ‘unpleasant experience with you know who’ - just for trying to do positive things, and asking awkward questions for those who’d been affected back in January. If you can be anything people - please be kind!

Team 3G’s Fundraiser for LOROS

Because of Maureen’s increasing health problems towards the end of the journey in July, Rachael had to pedal extra miles to complete their combined virtual journey of the Scottish North Coast 500, a total between them of 1032 miles. Faith, as promised, carried on cycling and walking until the end of August, determined to surpass the 100-mile mark. She ended up completing 121 miles giving Team 3G a grand total of 1153 miles!

They would like to thank everybody who supported them on their ‘journeys’ and are pleased to have raised £365 for LOROS.

It is 26 years since Maureen’s husband Jim passed away in LOROS, and it will always be a charity which remains so close to their hearts.

Building Up the Immune System for Winter

As we approach the winter months, now is the time to look at building up our immune systems to help prevent colds and flu symptoms.

We have produced this article in collaboration with Raj at the Body Store. As always please seek medical advice before taking any herbal remedies if you have any condition which is of concern.

Elderberry (sambucus nigra). These beautiful dark purple/black berries are well known as a delicious ingredient in drinks, providing a dense source of nutrients alongside the tart and stimulating taste.

There are a lot of remedies to assist the immune system – In this article we are going to focus on: Echinacea, Elderberry, Vitamin C. Echinacea (echinacea augusfi Folia, echinacea purpurea). Echinacea’s active compounds enhance immune function due to various mechanisms of action such as; increasing the production of white blood cells (when they are low); stimulating activation of white blood cells and boosting the production of various immunepotentiating compounds. It is considered to be the prime remedy for the immune system. Echinacea works by balancing the immune system so that it works efficiently. This means that you are less likely to catch colds, and may be less prone to allergies.

It is best taken in a maintenance dose over a period of time to improve immune function. Although it appears that Echinacea is most effective taken at the onset of an infection, if the herb is to be used long-term many experts suggest that a one to two week break be taken every eight weeks or so. Also, those suffering from leukaemia or HIV should consult a doctor before using Echinacea. Do not take if you are taking immunosuppressant medication or if you are hypersensitive to Echinacea preparations.

Black elderberries contain large quantities of flavonoid and anthocyan glycosides, plus essential oils, vitamin C, B complex and minerals. It is a good source of antioxidants. Like Echinacea, it can stop viruses from spreading however it can’t stop viruses infecting cells in the first place which echinacea can. The two herbs can work well together. Studies show that oral administration of elderberry extract reduces the duration of

influenza symptoms from an average of six days down to 48 hours.

Vitamin C is often called the master immune nutrient, because of its essential role in immune function. Many studies have shown vitamin C to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms, and some research suggests it may reduce the risk of catching a cold (although results of prevention studies have been mixed). Among other relevant effects, vitamin C increases white blood cell function, interferon production and antibody activity. Vitamin C requirements are higher during infection.

Source of Life

Syston Library Local Studies Coffee Morning

The Stn joined many residents to see the newly set up Local Studies room after a donation of local history in the form of books, newspaper clipping and photographs of Syston through the years. The library said that the Local Studies room will be open to members of the public when ever the library is staffed, on Monday and Friday 2pm to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 1pm, Saturday 10am to 2pm.

There were lots of photographs on

From Roman Times, there have been waterways for irrigation, and eventually navigation. The Duke of Bridgewater wanted coal to be delivered from his collieries to Manchester so with his engineer friend, James Brindley, the Bridgewater Canal was constructed between 1762 and 1772.

Canals became excellent route for carrying goods until the railways and then roads became the main transport links. Now the canals are used mostly for leisure activities. Mr Watson and his wife had one boat, plus a second (butty boat) and could cater for twelve guests at any one time.

There were plenty of do’s and don'ts when boating. Also there were supplies to be obtained for organising meals, laundry requirements and sanitation points for water etc.

display and lots of chat from people reminiscing times gone by and seeing how Syston has changed over the years.

The library want to thank Margaret

The guests were able to enjoy the scenery as they cruised along the various canals and rivers of Britian - some apprehension as to the tunnels, particularly the Harecastle Tunnel and many locks.

Mr Watson ended his talk with a poem and two songs he sang as he played his guitar, relating to his experiences, although he and his wife have now retired.

Dawn Haynes thanked Mr Watson. The competition was won by Valerie Cobb with a Waterway photograph. The raffle was won by Joy Goulden.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 2nd October with ‘Hannah’s Sugarcraft’. The meeting will be held at the Syston Community Centre starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are always welcome.

Young and her family for donating her late husband Ray’s collection. The family are pleased that the collection will be kept and open to the public. Hopefully, more of these will be put on so more people can visit and see aspects of the collection and enjoy looking at the history of Syston. It is a great resource for the public to access.

Dear Editor Syston Fridge Bandits

Over the last year I have noticed many homes in syston that have an old fridge / freezers permanently abandoned on their driveway and almost every one appears to have had the compressor unit removed.

I am presuming that in all good faith, these homeowners assume the local scrap collectors will take them away. Alas this is not the case because they cannot legally do this due to the hazardous refrigerant gas which has to be disposed of correctly in order to protect the Ozone layer.

However, there are some unscrupulous scrap collectors that just remove the compressor unit which they can then weigh in at any obliging scrap yard. This results in hazardous refrigerant being released into the atmosphere and also leaves the homeowner with the sole responsibility for disposing of the appliance carcass that has no scrap value to anyone.

If you wish to defeat these Fridge Bandits and prevent further damage to the fragile Ozone layer:-

1. Most Leicestershire Recycling Centre's will accept them at no cost although transport would be needed.

2. Alternatively, Charnwood Borough Council will collect them (charges apply, see: https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/ pages/special_collections). Note though that if the appliance is left on the drive prior to collection then the bandits may strike first.

3. Or, choose a replacement appliance retailer who will agree to take way the old one. Extra costs will apply but these can often be negotiated.

Depressingly, it seems the current abandoned appliances on residents driveways and adjacent pathways will remain for an eternity because once the compressor is removed they have no scrap value to anyone.

It would be nice to go for a walk any not encounter any at all ! RN

Charnwood Borough Council and they do collect fridges, freezers and fridge/ freezers at a cost of £25 for up to three items. They also state that they collect these on a Saturday and that items should be placed outside before 6am.

Dear

Editor

Having chased, I finally got a reply from our town council reference using my name/views without my knowledge/ permission in their Syston Topic!

In brief, our town council does NOT see what the problem is, the content was ok’d by the Development Committee, so they ‘all agreed to use my details/ views without my knowledge’, just gets better does it not! Seems then that the ‘note taking‘ exercise by the town council during a walkabout organised by the EA, wasn’t just for the benefit of the councillor in attendance, more likely perhaps to use whatever was said, whenever it suited, to ‘pad out’ the content of their own printed article! I was invited to use the Syston Town Council online complaint procedure, and what a waste of my time that would be, the same people who say it’s NOT a problem would actually investigate the problem, no bias there then!

Syston Allotment Open Day

On Saturday 17th August, the annual Open Day for Syston Allotments took place during National Allotments Week. This year the national focus is on celebrating the way allotments contribute to biodiversity by providing a range of habitats for plants and animals, as well as promoting wellbeing. Allotments around the UK have been opening for people to come and have a look round and Syston has joined in with this for many years now.

two hours walking the plots on 15th August and he was very impressed. He said his job of judging was hard last year, and it was even harder this year – he could have given eight or nine more prizes than he did. The brassicas were the best he had seen for a long time, and he liked the way plot holders were growing a huge range of veg, fruit, and flowers, including some less usual ones. He commended the fact that Syston plots include the wider community e.g. the plot working with children from the preschool and the one worked by ‘Grow Give Live’. He said he had a really enjoyable walk round and sent his congratulations to all whether or not they had an award.

Richard Thorpe kindly judged the produce competition; Jane Thorpe judged the best item made from produce and children’s art competitions. We thank all the judges for giving up their time to do what is not an easy job.

Silver award – plot 73B

Bronze award – plot 19A

Certificate of merit – plot 48A

Syston had several community events on the day including a yard sale, but despite the clash there was a steady stream of visitors to the plots, including some welcome ‘regulars’ who come every year. Thank you all for coming, and thank you to everyone who helped to organise and run the event. The plant and produce sale went very well: certain interestinglyformed carrots were particularly popular. After trying their luck on the Tombola, admiring the entries to the produce/items made from produce competitions, and walking round the plots, visitors could buy tea or coffee and cake, the latter generously baked by friends and plot holders.

Al Dayman from Derrys Nurseries Cossington kindly agreed to judge the best cultivated plot competition. He spent
