Thiswasawelcomeandlongawaitedoccasionfollowingatwoyeargapduringthecovidpandemic.
Despitetemperaturesintothe30sthe daywaswellattendedbyplot holders,families,andlocalpeople interestedinallotmentgardening.
Plotsaresopopularatthemoment thatthereisawaitinglist,butthere wasthechancetolookroundfor thosewhowanttoputtheirnames downforavacancy(contactSyston TownCouncil,whoownandmanage thesite,on01162607150).
Therecentlackofrainhasmadeit verydifficulttogrowvegetablesbut therewasaremarkablyhigh standardofentriesintothe‘BestBox ofAllotment Produce’and ‘BestItem madefrom Produce’ Competitions; wealsohad lovelyentries fortheArt‘on thetopicof allotments’ competition. Thankyouto thewonderful
judges,RichardandJaneThorpe, whohadaverychallengingjobto choosewinners(includingthe arduoustaskoftastinghome-made gin).
GeraldPownallranhisusualvery popularTombolastallwhichwas muchenjoyed,therewasaproduce/ plantstall,andrefreshments includingamagnificentcakedonated byoneofourjudges,JaneThorpe.
ThiswasourfirstOpenDaywithout theindefatigablesupportof committeestalwartTerryBailey,who diedin2020.Heissadlymissed,and runningtheOpenDaywithouthim onlyservedtounderlinehowmuch heusedtodo.Hiscontributiontothe Allotmentsandthecommitteewas enormous;healsochampioned gardeninginthewidercommunity e.g.withchildrenatMertonSchool. Wewerevery touchedthat Terry’sfamily andhiswidow Elainewere abletoattend theOpenDay toseethe plaquethatis nowdisplayedontheCommunity ShopinmemoryofTerry.

Theyarebasedontheoriginal WreakeValleyWayroute,whichwas compiledshortlyaftertheSociety wasformedin1997,buttheyhave beenupdatedandexpandedand nowincludeinformationaboutthe villagesandotherpointsofinterest alongtheway.
Mostofthewalkstakearounda coupleofhoursforboththeoutward andreturnjourneyandsomeinclude acircularroute.
Itisnolongerpossibletowalk alongsidetheriveralltheway because,whentheNavigationwas abandonedinthelate1800s,the towpathrevertedtoprivate

Thenitwasofftowalkaroundthe prettyBrooksidewhereseatswere waitingforthemtochoosetheirarea tocontemplateGod.Theyenjoyeda quiethourreflectingonthecontents oftheirgiftbagswhichcontained anotherwhichheldlittlesurprises.It reallyhelpedtore-assesswhereyou areinlifeandinyourrelationshipto God.Afterlunchtherewasatimeset asideforcreativeactivitiesandthenit wasanotherstrollroundtothe churchtoenjoycakeandteabefore aclosingthanksgiving.The organisersandparticipantswouldlike tothankthekindresidentsofBarkby forallowingtheretreattousetheir privatespaces.Itishopedthatthere willbeawinterretreatinFebruary 2023.

Goodoldhelianthus(perennial sunflower)is alsopretty resilient.It flowersfrom JulytoOctober andwhilstitcan besomethingof athug-its rootsspread veryquickly-neverthelessitmakesa cheerfulsplashofcolourandI'm fairlysureitisoneofthose‘bomb proof’plantsthatwouldbehardto eradicate(notthatIwouldwanttoI hastentoadd).

OnarrivalatSt PancrasStation wewaitedonce everyonehadleft thetrainfora ramptobeput betweenthe platformandthe trainsothat Declancoulddepart.Fromtherewe joinedthequeueforataxiandto Declan’ssurprise,hedrovehassle freeintoanelectricblackcab,without thedriverstatinghis‘rampwas broken’or‘therewon'tbeenough headroom’.
Shortlyafter,wepulledupoutsidethe hospitalandtookthelifttothe familiarsettingsoftheNMCCCtobe welcomedbyDeclan’sconsultant,a lovely,midfiftiesladywhoalways welcomesusbothwithabeautiful smile.ShehasseenDeclangrow fromafrightenedteenager,who wouldbarelytalktoheratthese appointmentsasthefearofwhatthe testmayuncovertookoverhis normalchattypersonality,toa articulateyoungman,whofelt comfortedbyherknowledgeof DuchenneMuscularDystrophyand hisneeds.

Afterfinishinghis apprenticeshipheworked onarestorationprojectat MordenHallParkin southwestLondon;restored orchards,rosegardensandlotsof featuresaroundthehistoricmansion.He thenmovedontoBerryfields[former locationofBBCGardeners’World]which involvedsettingeverythingupfrom scratch:aglasshouse,kitchengarden, borders…butonquiteasmallscale:it wasaTVsetifyoulike,acoupleof acres.
