GrowGiveLiveisaSystonbased communitygroupwithavisionto createacommunityspaceinthe townwheresustainability,community andwellbeingareattheheartof everythingitdoes.

Theproposedcommunitygarden couldincludeawildlifepond,forest gardenwithfruitandnuttrees,a woodcraftarea,hedgehoghouses andabeehivearea.

Proposeddesignshavebeenput togetherandtheBoroughCouncilis nowafterviewsfromlocalpeople. Theconsultationwillrununtil Monday14thNovember2022.

Thegroupalreadyencouragesthe localcommunitytogetinvolvedwith theoutdoors,learnaboutsustainable growingandlivingaswellas understandingthepositiveimpactit canhaveonpeople’sphysicaland mentalwellbeing.

WhenI started workingon thisseries,I wasn’tsure howclubs would respondto mereaching outtothem foravisitand evenwriting aboutthem, withoutthe intentionof joiningthem (forthesole reasonIhavealreadygottoomany hobbies!).Buteverycluband gatheringIreachedouttohasbeen sowelcomingtomeandIhopethatI havebeenabletobringthatacrossin myarticles.Iwasplanningtovisit manymore,butmycareerhasmade amassivejumpforwardsandIhave toadmitthatIamnotableto combineboth.Asthesayinggoes, somethinghastogive.Inmycase, currently,allmyhobbieshavetogive untilIamsettledinmynewrole. Icertainlyhaveenjoyedmytimeasa correspondentfortheSystonTown NewsandIhopeIhavebeenableto inspireyoutomaybejoinoneofthe manyclubsorgatheringsourlovely townoffers.Andifnot,Ikindlyask youtopeekattheGreenPages, becauseIamsurethereisaclubor gatheringhereperfectforyou.

Weatthe Stn wanttothankInekefor heruniqueandinspirationalreportson thelocalclubsandsocietiesshehas visitedwhilehereinSyston.Weare goingtomissreadingherreportseach month,butwewishhereverysuccess forthefutureinhernewroleandhope shewilldropusalineortwowhenshe issettled.

Rosemaryrecogniseas'British Celanese'.(postwarIguess).These comefromhercollectionofgarments madeinLeicesterforthetalk celebratingLeicester'shosieryindustry. FelicityalsopresentedRosannaandher Mother,Rosemary,twobooks,one aboutthehistoryofSymington'sof MarketHarboroughandtheothera historyofCorah's.

Felicitytoldusthatshefoundallthe establishedshopkeepersalongthat stretchofHighStreetallverysupportive andwantedtocelebrateRosanna's yearsthere,whichshowswhathigh esteemsheisheldin,withanumberof themattendingthisfarewellgathering,it alsoincludedacoupleofregular customers.

WhenourQueenpassedawayon Thursday8thSeptember,Systonlike therestoftheCountryentereda periodofmourning.

Flowerswereplacedonthe Memorial,asshownabove,by residentswhowantedtoshowtheir respectandthankstoHerMajestyfor herlonglifeandservicetoour countryandbeyond.

Speakingtoresidentsitbecameclear thatmostpeoplefeltagreatsenseof loss.Mostofushadonlyknownher asourmonarchforallourlivesand althoughthemajorityhadnevermet herinpersonshewasabigpartof ourlives.

Speakingofsalvias,autumnisreally theirtimetoshine.NewbyHall outsideRiponhasanautumngarden dedicatedtosalviasofeverycolour imaginable-it'samagicalplace. Whilstthemoredelicatevarietieswill notsurvivearelativelyhardBritish wintercuttingsfromthemainplant willrootveryeasilyandcanbe overwinteredinagreenhouseorfrost freeenvironment,soit'salwaysbest totakeafewcuttingsas‘insurance’. StickingwithsalviasI'vebeen captivatedoverthesummermonths bythisveryaptlynamed hummingbirdhawkmothwhichhas beenaregularvisitortothegarden, it'sfavouriteplantbeing theshockingpink salvia'CerroPotosi'. Iapologiseforthe slightlyblurredimage buttryingtotakea photowithmyphone whilstitwasdarting aroundstretchedmy limitedphotography skillssomewhatbut they'resuchfascinatingcreaturesI wantedtoshareitwithyou. Theyaresummervisitorsandwith oursummersgettingwarmertheyare becomingmorecommonhere.They areadayflyingspeciesandaswell assalviastheyalsofeedonplants suchashoneysuckleandvalerian wheretheirlongprobosciscanreach thenectarinsidethetubularflowers. Sedumstooareinvaluablenotonly tousfortheirautumncolourbutfor thefoodtheyprovideforbeeswhenit isgettinghardertofind.Whenthey havefinishedfloweringtheir seedheadsgivesomestructuretothe borderoverwinter.Sedumshave recentlybeenrenamed 'Hylotelephium'butIcan'timagine anyoneexceptabotanistcalling themanythingbutasedum-so mucheasiertopronounce!

Rudbeckias,dahliasandthedelicate butterfly-likebloomsofGaurawill alsocontinueuntiltheweathertakes aturnfortheworse.Ilovetodotpink andwhiteGaurasaroundthegarden -thebloomsappeartofloatinthe breeze,althoughit'stouchandgo whethertheycomebackthefollowing yearastheywon'ttoleratehavingwet feet.However,thoseplantedinpots standabetterchanceofsurviving. Eveniftheycanbeabit temperamentalIwouldn'tbewithout them-anewplantcostsaboutthe sameasaverysmallbunchofshopboughtflowersbutwillcarryon floweringformuch,muchlonger.

TalesfromthePlot

Westillgetsomenicedaysin Novemberandthereisenough daylighttoclearandtidyupthe allotmentofanyoldcropsin preparationfornextyear.Itrynot toleavesummercropstorotasthey harbouroverwinteringpestsand diseases.

Astheclocksgobackweareallowed tohaveabonfireontheallotments.I trytohaveminearoundbonfirenight; wehavetobecarefulasthe allotmentsaresurroundedbyprivate dwellings-IjustfeelthatifIhave minearoundbonfirenightitwon’t causeanyupset,commonsense alsotellsusnottoleaveone unattended.Mygrandsonlovesto helpwhenwehavethebonfire.I thinkthere’sabitofcavemaninallof usandpokingabonfirewithastickis quiteapleasurablethingtodo.Wrap acoupleofpotatoesinsomefoiland placeintheemberstheywillbe wonderfulespeciallywithahotmug ofsoupintheotherhandLOL! Pleasealsocheckbeforeyoulightto makesuretherearenohedgehogs nestinginthere.

Ialwaysfeelasenseof accomplishmentoncetheallotmentis clearedandtidy.Somethingelseto lookforwardtoisthatusuallybythe endofthismonthwecanhavethe firstofthebrusselssprouts,my favouritevegetable-althoughlast

yearIdidn’tgetthemuntilafter Christmas,thatwasabitofa disaster,sothisyearIsetthem earlierintheyear.Hopefullyallwill bewellforChristmas.Pickthe brusselssproutsworkingfromthe bottomofthestalkupwardstomake surethatallthesproutsgetachance toswell.Ialsoclearanyofthelower leaves,thishelpsminimisepests.We canalsostarttoharvestleeksand parsnips:waituntilafterafrostforthe parsnipsbecausethechillingeffect turnsthestarchesintosugarsand thisgivesthemtheirnaturalsweet taste.

WellIdon’tknowifI’vedonerightor wrongbutI’vestartedsomebroad beansoffintraysandthey’rereadyto goin.Ialwaysfeelsorryforanything Iputoutatthistimeofyearasthere’s onlyhardtimesahead-butfingers crossed.Howeverit’snottoolateto takeachanceandtoputarowortwo inthegroundespeciallyifyoucan coverthemwithcloches.Ialways alsoputacoupleofdozenlettuce plantsinatthistime,thesewinter varietiesaretoughenoughto withstandmostBritishwintersand I’vebeenquitesuccessfulinthepast althoughitisalwaysbesttohave someprotectiononhandreadyto protectthemifneedsbe.

Mostoftheleaveswillhavefallenby now,collectthemupandmakealeaf mouldstack,Ihaveafriendwhohas severaltreesinhisgardenandhe kindlyhooversthemupwithhis mowerandthenbagsthemforme-I alsousethemasamulchthroughout theyearandtocoveranytubsof potatoesIhaveleftforChristmas whichhelpsstopthemfromgetting frosted.

Kerry’sfirstarrangementwascreatedina flowerbasketandconsistedoflilies, Chrysanthemums,Septemberflowers (purple)andsomesmallerwhiteflowers withlaurelleavesusedasfoliage,all

turningandtoseethepoorbinlorrydriver strugglingtoturn,evenusingresidents drivewaysisnotgood.Whenaskinga driverpolitelytonotparkonthepath,as wehaveadisabledneighbour,theretort was'moveifyoudon'tlikelivinghere'. Wetolerateitbecausewehavetolive andletlive,butcouldIaskforsome respect.Allowingthedogstomessonour gardensandplants,andsaying'don't worryI'llclearitup'isnoton.Adogwill alwayscockitslegup,butourfencesare rustingandrotting.

Myrecentvisitorsnoticeddogsickonthe pathyetagain,whichIhadtoclearup. Thepathsareusuallycoveredinmud anyway,droppedfromdirtyboots.The fieldscanbeaccessedfromother openingsbutpeopleseemtopreferthe

placedintooasis(floralfoam). Thesecondarrangementwasmadeona redmetalplateandmadeupoflilies,red, yellowandpeachcolouredroses,filledin withlaurelleavesandotherfoliage.To completeit,Kerrymadeafigure-of-eight bowandattachedittothebackofthe creationusingpeachcolouredribbon. Thirdlyusingalargeemptyplasticbottle, cutinhalf,anelasticbandwaspulled overthebottlesothatfoliagecouldbe securedunderneathit.Thenusinga spiralmethodtoholdflowersinonehand, thenseparatingeachone,thestems werethencutoffandcouldeasilystand ontheirown,orasthedemonstration showed,placedinthebottle-verysimple buteffective.

Itisalwaysaninterestingevent andthereisalwayssomething neweachyear.

Peoplevisitforavarietyof reasonsandthisyearwasno different,acouplewhorecently movedintoapropertyonMelton Roadweretryingtofindout abouttheirhouseandasked manyquestionsofthegroupmembers whobetweenthemhaveawealthof localknowledge.
