Syston in the 20th Century Book 2, A Village at Work and Play Book 2 will be on sale in local shops from the start of June.

Readers who have enjoyed ‘Syston in the 20th Century book 1’ which was launched in December, may like to know that a companion book will soon be available.

The authors were offered so much information and so many photos that a second book was needed to complete the story of what it was like to live in Syston in the last century.

Book 2 will complete the story with a host of memoirs, illustrations and

information about the following; How and where Syston people spent their leisure time. This will include the story of cinema in Syston, going on holiday, clubs and societies, etc. etc.

There will be chapters on the following topics; - The Railway, Syston shops, living on the Fosse, local workplaces, wash-day in the past and the Police in Syston. The book will cover how people celebrated Christmas, Bonfire Night, Syston Feast and the annual fair, along with the story of Churches and Chapels, Education and Health Care in the 20th Century. It will also feature short biographies of ten Syston people who deserve to be remembered.

The authors and the Local History Group would like to thank all those who have contributed memoirs and photos for both volumes of the ‘History of Syston in the 20th Century.’ Without their input it would have been impossible to write the two books. They would also like to thank the local businesses and shops that have undertaken to sell the books.

The book will be on sale at the exhibition of ‘The Life and Times of her Majesty the Queen’ which will be held in the Parish church from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June.

The book will also be on sale in various Syston shops who will display

a poster in their window stating ‘Syston in the 20th century book 2 on sale here’.

Comic Relief Two young Syston residents decided that they would like to do something to raise money for this charity.

So, Leo and Felix Martin and their mum Katie got busy in the kitchen and created a large number of cookies and cakes and held a sale in their front garden in Holmdale Rd. Local residents and many customers from around supported this effort

It was very successful and made a wonderful £82 for Comic Relief.

Litter Picking Superstar We wanted to bring you this article that appeared on Facebook on 9th April as it highlights the worst and the best of people living in this town.

Megan Loach and her daughter Jessica were on their way out when they saw that someone had taken a ton of shredded paper and flung it around the centre of Syston.

It went right down the side of one road, across the zebra crossing and down the next road.

They thought, quite rightly so, that it looked absolutely disgusting. It

2nd Syston Guides

Plant A Tree for the Queens Platinum Jubilee On Tuesday 29th March, your editor joined Guides, Leaders and parents/ families to see the Guides plant a

tree for Her Majesty in this her Platinum Jubilee year in the Peace Garden, Central Park.

Robert from George Walker who provided the tree, was on hand to instruct the guides and those of us listening how to plant a young tree and the need to keep it well watered for its first year, in order for it to establish itself and continue to thrive and grow.

It wasn’t the warmest of evenings, but it was dry and the girls in the picture all had a go at digging the hole for the tree to go into, which wasn’t very easy and Robert had to help them achieve it.

Our pictures show the Guides with the tree they planted, before and after the ribbon was cut. Well done everyone and Thank you for inviting me along too.

East Goscote Brownies

On Thursday the 17th of March 1st East Goscote Brownies celebrated their Brown Owl, Rosemary Fraser, being part of the unit for 40 years.

The evening was enjoyed by representatives from East Goscote Parish Council, as well as some favourite faces from the Leicestershire guiding community.

Gifts were given, songs were sung, and the evening was rounded off with a walk to the chip shop for the whole pack, followed by a delicious cake made by one of the unit members.

Many thanks to Rosemary were given, including a commemorative vase from her current leaders Sami,

Sarah and Dorota.

Rosemary, pictured, started her guiding journey in March 1982, when she attended a Brownie Meeting after deciding she wanted to get involved with something worthwhile.

She qualified as a leader in 1983 and took over as Brown Owl for 1st East Goscote pack when the position became available.

Her reason for staying in the role so long is simple - she is continually inspired by the girls enthusiasm for life, the friendships she has made through the years and the many and varied activities that Guiding brings.

She describes it as "having an excuse to do all the things she enjoyed in childhood, that would be unacceptable as an adult!" and "a reason to never grow up!"

Activities for the pack include: Pack Holidays at Topstones, Remembrance Day parades, Visits to Harry Potter World and Media City in Salford. As well as the organised events, she enjoys the many Brownie meeting activities like visits from local sports teams, clog dancing,

Hogmanay celebrations and archery as well as pamper nights and newspaper fashion show evenings.

She is inspired by the positive influence that Guiding brings to girls and women, and its ability to adapt and change to stay relevant.

She would like to thank her husband Ian and her son James, as well as the many dedicated leaders she has worked with over the years.

b&m Store Opening

On Thursday 24th March the new and widely anticipated b&m store opened in the Town Square.

They invited Mr Paul Lomas, Chairman of Syston and District Volunteer Centre’s Trustees to officially open the store.

There was a good turn out of residents ready to go shopping once the ribbon had been cut.

Mr Paul Lomas made a short speech whereby he welcomed everyone and introducing himself by saying: “I have lived in Syston for over 30 years and I am proud to be Chairman of the Syston & District Volunteer Centre who were awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2019.

years has shown the way communities come together and there is now an anticipation that we can look forward in a positive way.

I am certain that I speak on behalf of our local residents and surrounding areas in saying that we really appreciate b&m management making the decision to support Syston, which will significantly increase the footfall throughout the Town and hopefully will have benefits for the surrounding small businesses.

I wish great success to the Manager Amanda and staff who are patiently waiting to serve you.

The atmosphere was bright and uplifting with everyone we spoke to saying it is a great asset to Syston to have b&m here.

From Social Distancing to Social Gathering By Ineke Doesburg

Syston QT Theatre Group

Day to day life might sometimes feel like acting, especially when you are not at all in the mood and you put a face on just to get through the day. If this sounds like you, you might be interested in making acting your hobby. Twice a week the Syston QT Theatre Group comes together for rehearsals. Not just for fun, but rehearsing for a proper performance with a real audience that pays for tickets! And it doesn’t stop there.

Apart from acting, the group also design and craft their own stage props. But I am already ahead of myself. Let’s see where they rehearse and meet the cast and director.

On a very cold Tuesday evening I met Jude in the Old Chapel. She is very passionate about the current play but also tells me about previous performances. I had no idea we had such a driven acting group in the town. One by one the actors arrive.

And they are all very enthusiastic about the play and the joy this group brings them.

“Being a member of this group has really been useful to meet people when I just came to Syston ages ago.

I never left!” says Kat, smiling.

It’s funny to see them change into character without changing anything else. They are still wearing the same clothes as when we chatted, but now they are different people. Jude is the director and takes control. When an

actor struggles with their lines, she helps them recover and the play continues. During the pause, feedback is given and everything is being done so friendly and respectful.

They will be performing this current play at the end of May. Why not get some tickets, enjoy a nice evening out and meet this lovely group of people?

Royal British Legion The Royal British Legion Syston branch are hosting the Re-dedication of all Leicestershire & Rutland Royal British Legion Standards on Sunday 12th June 2022.

Starting with a Church service at St Peter & Paul’s Church conducted by Father John Leonard at 3.30pm, the Standard Party will then lay a wreath at the War Memorial at Central Park, followed by a reception at the Conservative Club, where we will be entertained by a lady with the most beautiful voice, Miss Sarah Clarke.

This Month in the Garden With Kate Hill

Looking around the garden these are a few of my favourite plants which are currently in bloom. I left the wallflowers I planted in the autumn of 2020 in the ground and they are now flowering better than they did last spring. With such a glorious display of colour they can be forgiven for their tendency to flop if not propped up.

Over recent years I have become very fond of pulmonarias (lungwort).

The variety in the photo here is ‘Ensign Blue’. Its brilliant cobalt blue flowers really stand out and look especially good when planted next to yellow hued foliage plants. A number of years ago I planted some perennial ‘Orange Emperor’ Fosteriana tulips. They never disappoint - their orange petals are flushed with green and they are without doubt the best tulips I’ve ever grown. Another favourite spring flowering bulb is the Snake’s head fritillary (photo at top of the page).

I have two Amelanchier lamarckii shrubs but was very disappointed when they didn’t produce much flower. However, having removed a

very old and woody spirea which has opened up the area next to them and let in a lot more light I’m delighted the amelanchiers have now put on a good show of blossom, which should mean that with any luck there’ll be a decent crop of berries for the birds.

My first recollection of seeing amelanchiers was when they had been planted as a hedge. They looked so impressive with their white starry blossom they reminded me of sparklers on bonfire night. They can be grown as shrubs or trees and are also known as snowy mespilus, serviceberry and Juneberry. The emerging foliage is a pretty bronze colour, turning green then red in the autumn, so they’re good “all rounders”. I’m hoping my plants will now take off and put on a good performance from now on.

Last month I wrote about the large flock of chaffinches and bramblings spotted in Rearsby. Imagine my surprise when I recently looked out and saw a male brambling on one of the feeders in the garden.

A few days later several others had joined him and I, along with a few of my birdwatching friends, have spent hours watching and photographing them at close quarters. They are such attractive little birds, I’ve included a clearer photo taken by my friend which shows off the young male’s beautiful orange colouring. It’s been a real privilege to have them visit the garden and I only hope they return next year, preferably earlier in the winter, after their migration from their Scandinavian homelands.

‘Beware of the last full moon in May’ that’s widely accepted by the more experienced gardeners as being hopefully the last chance of a frost. I have learnt to my peril over the years that to ignore such advice can be a mistake!

12th May is known as bean day, remember the word ‘bingo’ because beans should be planted with Eyes Down! I always set french and runner beans at this time saving my own seed year after year. I grow french dwarf bush beans as they produce prolifically throughout the summer and need no support.

With the help of a dibber, I make four inch (10cm) deep holes across the plot about eight to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) apart and place four or five seeds in each hole, normally three or so will germinate and they’ll grow together and hold each other up, the only downside is it’s a backbreaking job harvesting them so I normally get my grandson Sidney to pick them!

If the beans are picked young they need no more than blanching so served still slightly crunchy with a knob of salted butter ….. they are an absolute delight, also try with a few shavings of Parmesan wow!

This is also time to set sweetcorn, I set mine in 15 cell trays with one seed per cell, I water well and cover with clingfilm and within a week to 10 days you see the green shoots pushing at the clingfilm, just split the clingfilm and allow them to grow through they grow quickly. Once the shoots are around six to eight inches (15 to 20cm) tall I plant them about 18 inches (45cm) apart ….. if you mulch heavily with either grass cuttings or leaves collected in the Autumn they can just be left alone and I’m touching wood but I’ve never failed yet! (famous last words).

This is also a time to get the hoe out, regular hoeing with the help of my grandson will keep the weeds at bay this task must be performed at least

once a week to keep the plot reasonably tidy.

It’s also time to keep a close eye out for the first signs of white-fly and black-fly they will be treated to a squirt of water with washing up liquid and a tablespoon of rape seed oil added, this must be repeated every day to do any good as the little blighters lay their eggs daily so you have to squirt several generations to show any signs of success.

It’s at this time that ‘plant swapping’ between potholders goes on when any excess can be exchanged for someone else’s excess, I usually end up growing something I never intended to purely because somebody’s given me half a dozen plants because they have too many; that’s all part of the fun!

The look on the faces of the cast was a picture when our ‘prompt’, Margaret, walked in to a recent rehearsal!!! Suddenly, it’s all very real and it really is time to ditch those scripts. Thanks to SARIC (Syston Arts and Recreation in the Community), the Vestry at the Old Chapel has been completely refurbished and made safe. A group of us put all our flats, furniture, large props, etc. back into their new home and we were able to rehearse, once more, in our usual stage space. We welcomed Ineke, Stn’s new correspondent, who came to find out all about the group and hear our thoughts on re-opening.

So now we are on the home straight.

By the time you read this, the stage will probably be up, the set will hopefully be painted, all the props will have been sourced and the Dress Rehearsal and Technical Rehearsal will be just around the corner!

The play is being performed from Tuesday 24th to Friday 27th May at The Old Chapel in Chapel Street, Syston LE7 1GN, starting at 7.30pm.

In ‘Lockdown’, The Chairman Gordon calls an emergency meeting, complete with social distancing, to discuss his idea for their next production when restrictions ease – a touching love story set in a hospital, with all profits destined for the NHS. But, based on their previous efforts, will the NHS actually end up worse off?

Friends of Syston Cemetery

Hello everyone this is Ros. Before anything else I must say on behalf of

Spectrum Sensory Sports UK CIC On Saturday 2nd April the above group held a coffee morning in the Brookside Working Mens Club and it was a great success.

Lots of people attended, mingled and met local co-ordinators from Charnwood Borough Council, AHDH solutions, M.A.D.S. Mental health support groups.

Organiser, Sean Baker said that they had some great feedback and they will be holding another one soon.

This first coffee morning was to gather ideas and for people to make

the Friends of Syston Cemetery a big thank you to Syston Banxy for letting us have the national day of reflection daffodil arrangement for the Chapel, it is on the altar and looks amazing, also thank you to the mystery person who’s supplied watering cans.

Mothers day weekend was extremely busy, there were cars in and out all day long. The bins were full with floral wrappers, old arrangements, old flowers and Christmas bits. The cemetery did look wonderful and now with the beautiful spring flowers blooming, vases of flowers, daisies opening and daffodils on the front opening too. The driveway looks glorious, it’s so cheerful and welcoming with the flower beds and towers either

side.

Thank you to everyone who helps to make the cemetery look like this for our loved ones.

The chapel has seen a lot of displays with a quick turnaround, next it’s Easter and then St George’s Day. Please, feel free to make a donation for shrubs and plants in memory of a loved one, to Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council. St Peter and St Paul’s Primary Academy From dancing on ice to walking on fire, Libby Clegg, Paralympic champion is calling on local thrill seekers to join her in her next challenge.

Syston Social Club Spring Fayre

Year 4 children have been busy creating persuasive adverts for healthy snacks.

They had to include lots of persuasive devices in their advert to persuade people that their snack bar was the best!

On 2nd April, a Spring Fayre was held at Syston & District Social Club to help raise funds for Wreake Valley Student Erin Bradshaw who, in February 2023, will be taking part in a community trip to Morocco as part of Wreake Valley 6th form, she is grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend.

Libby pictured here with Mark Hanretty her dance partner from Dancing on Ice Libby Clegg, Paralympic Champion has officially joined the team at Vista and is the local charity’s newly appointed Community Fundraiser.

Libby has a deteriorating eye condition known as Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy disease giving her only slight peripheral vision in her left eye – she is registered blind.

Libby’s first challenge is to walk on fire for the charity on Saturday 28th May at Loughborough University.

Libby is organising the firewalk and is seeking likeminded daredevils to join her.

Libby Clegg, Community Fundraiser said: “If you’re looking for a fundraising challenge that will push your boundaries please join me - whether it’s solo, with friends, colleagues or family members, everyone over the age of 18 is welcome”. Libby goes on to say “I'm really excited to be working for Vista, supporting local people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland with sight loss and to be able to witness the direct impact the charity has in the community. The pandemic has really hit our fundraising and local support is vital to the charity in helping us to deliver our sight loss services.”

Friendship Group On Thursday 14th April, the friendship group met for their Easter evening, which was made very special by TESCO Syston who very generously donated enough Easter eggs for all the members.

Our picture below shows the group behind all the Easter eggs, the group led by Anne and Trevor Carter would like to say a huge Thank You, to Tesco, Syston for their generosity. It certainly put a big smile on everyone there.

As part of the trip the students are being encouraged to fund raise towards the cost of the trip, which is £2,000 per person.

The event held at the Syston Social Club made a great start with £239.30 being raised towards the trip.

Erin wants to thank everyone who supported, who bought raffle tickets, had a go on the chocolate tombola or Easter Treasure Hunt and the stallholders who provided raffle prizes too, and special thanks to the Club for letting her use their venue for the day.

Erin and her family will be arranging other events including a Quiz Night at the Social Club at the end of May, and she will be taking part in schoollead fundraising too.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News The parish church of St Peter and St Paul holds its regular services on Wednesday mornings at 9.30 and Sundays at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The church celebrated Easter with creative services spread across Holy Week.

It is recognised that there were still some reservations regarding covid.

This contributed to the nervousness of people to step outside their normal pattern of worship. However, our ‘Mothering Sunday’ service was well attended with everyone receiving a little gift of chocolate decorated with a single silk flower signifying rebirth.

During Holy Week there was a full calendar of services mapping out Jesus’ final week as he journeyed from triumphal entry to his trial, death and resurrection. Rev’d Biddy also facilitated ‘women during holy week’ which were daily Facebook videos.

Each day a different woman explored their encounter with Jesus. These women were thought of as on the edges of his society reminding us to keep noticing just as Jesus did – making them the very heart of the gospels.

Easter morning began with a dawn service and a hearty breakfast!

Queen’s Jubilee We are extremely excited to be celebrating the jubilee with the rest of the country. To that end there will be an exhibition over that special weekend recalling ‘The Life and Times of her Majesty the Queen’ A display of events national and local during Queen Elizabeth’s lifetime.

Exhibition opens on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

There will be many photographic displays, covering nine decades and what Syston did for the Coronation and Silver Jubilee celebrations, plus a few surprises!

Visitors will also have a chance to see once more the Syston Banxy knitted sculptures of the Queen and her corgis and the life sized WW1 soldier.

Entrance free. Refreshments available.

Members of the church in Barkby spent a night in the church in aid of the Bishop’s lent appeal with the emphasis on the homeless. They raised over £900 for their efforts.

We begin the season of weddings with Jack and Laura’s wedding at the end of May. A church wedding is such a special event especially in a place where many have gone before to make their vows and pledge their love for one another. You will receive a warm welcome in response to any inquiry.

Mrs S. Franklin, President of New Barkby W.I. welcomed members to the institutes April meeting. ‘Jerusalem’ was sung then a time for business matters.

The speaker was Wendy Martin from Hinckley, ‘From Barnard Castle to Berwick-upon-Tweed’.

This was a power-point presentation to show members the outstanding scenery and places of interest around Northumberland and the places where she grew up near Hexham. This was a longpromised nostalgic trip, as the slides showed where Wendy attended Primary School in Acomb and a house where she had lived (her first home has now been demolished).

On the way to the North-East there was a visit to Wetherby; Cotherstone, the house where the late Dales farmer Hannah Hauxwell (she became a TV celebrity) lived, after moving from her remote farmhouse in the Pennines. Further on during the trip, there was a visit to Cragside, the home of the late Lord Armstrong. This was the first home in the world to be lit by hydro electricity. Also included in the itinerary were trips to Bamburgh Castle, Hexham Abbey, the Farne Islands and to Alnwick Castle and its poison gardens. The whole holiday ended at Haggerston Castle before the long journey back to Leicestershire. A very enjoyable reminder to Wendy of an area she knows very well. At the end of the talk Wendy gave a short amount of information of a charity she supports, ‘Send a Cow’, donations which help to fund farmers in other parts of the world, particularly in Africa.

The vote of thanks was given by Mrs A. Montague who also won the raffle prize.

There was a competition for something with the letter ‘A’ which Mrs A. Cobb won with a paperweight in the shape of an Anvil.

The tea hostesses were Mrs P. Smith and Mrs P. Wilson.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday 4th May at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm. All visitors are welcome. This will be a W.I. Resolutions meeting.

Paul Matts is a part time writer living in in Rearsby.

His first novel, ‘Toy Guitars’, has just been published by New Generation Publishing.

‘Toy Guitars’ is a family drama set in the East Midlands in 1980, and is narrated by a fourteen year old boy, Matt Morgan. Matt is the youngest member of his family, who sees his world come crashing down following the actions of his elder brother, Karl. What ensues is a story of estrangement, division and loyalty with Matt’s own insecurity, adolescence and dreams also thrown into the mix. The settings, though fictitious, are based on Paul’s own upbringing, and take in locations in and around Syston, Thurmaston and the Wreake Valley.

Acclaimed British author Paul D Brazill describes ‘Toy Guitars’ as ‘a heartfelt and down to earth coming of age story. Social realism and top tunes. A cracker.’ He also referred to the author as a ‘Brit Grit Nick Hornby’. Hornby wrote classic novels ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Fever Pitch’ and ‘About A Boy’, all later made into blockbuster films starring the likes of John Cusack, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Paul has been a regular contributor for ‘We Are Cult’ and ‘Punk Globe’ magazines, and has a self-published novella, ‘Donny Jackal’, also available. A non-fiction work, on the US punk band Rancid, is due to be published later this year by Sonicbond Publishing.

He is now a full-time selfemployed gardener by trade, having ran The Attik night club and venue between 2001 and 2007.

James Freer’s Schools of Tae Kwon-Do – Hits Success Again!!

World Master James Freer-7th Dan and Master Sheryl Freer-6th Dan recently had 16 of their students grade taking grades from 1st Dan Black Belts right up to 3rd Dan Black Belts.

The Black Belt Grading was held at a new venue; Hellidon Lakes Golf Resort and Hotel in Daventry.

Students taking their 2nd Dans were: Nazreen Kapadia and Sarah Scott.

Students taking their 3rd Dans were: Bradley Eston, Baljeevan Athwal and Rufus Bezanno-Griffiths. Pictured below left with World Master James Freer.

As Instructors, it was an exceptional grading with 100% pass rate!

Town C.C. Get New Season Underway The spring weather was generally kind to Syston Town C.C. and despite it being extremely cold at times, preparations for the new season went ahead as planned.

Richard Shepherd’s company Sportsground Maintenance and Machinery Ltd, as well as cutting the outfield as in previous years, have taken over maintenance of the square and the preparation of wickets and they were able to get underway with their work in the early spring.

They have made an impressive start with Ken Cooper continuing to do the required rolling and marking out.

The photograph shows Ken starting the preseason rolling at the beginning of April.

Two very necessary improvements to the pavilion have been carried out in the close season. The club is grateful to Greg Smith of GPS Plumbing and Heating for replacing the showers and to Scott Shaw of County Roofing for repairing the roof to the veranda.

The season may now be well underway but it’s still only early May and it’s not too late for players of all age groups to join Syston Town C.C. if they wish to play cricket. The club has excellent playing and practice facilities so if you are undecided then come along to one of the practice evenings at the ground and give it a go. Players of all age groups and abilities are always welcome. On Mondays the Sunday XI and the Burrough League teams will have use of the nets followed by the Kwik cricketers every Tuesday. The senior teams will appear on Wednesdays followed by the Sirens on Thursday evenings. All other juniors, U13 and above, will finish the week on Fridays.

Practice sessions start around 6.30pm and for advice please ring Scott Cooper for seniors on 0792 950 2012, Adam Mortimer regarding juniors on 0779 132 6819 or Andy Woolaston for information about the Sirens on 0785 006 1585. On the other hand, if you would like to help with some coaching you would also be very welcome. The club will fund any training and certificates that would be required for you to become a qualified ECB coach. Alternatively of course, if you just wanted to turn up to watch a game, members of the public are always very welcome. The club has a lovely ground with excellent parking facilities and what better way to spend a summer’s afternoon or evening than relaxing on the boundary and watching a game of cricket.
