TheconcerttookplaceonSaturday 1stAprilatSystonMethodistChurch toaveryappreciativeaudienceand provedtobeagreatsuccessdespite unforeseencircumstances. Unfortunately,afterasuccessful rehearsalintheafternoon,Rachael foundoutatveryshortnoticethatthe pianistwasunabletoreturntoplayat

Rachael’shusbandDougwascalled upontoaddsomeimpromptupiano musictothesecondhalf,although untilhesatdownatthepiano,hehad noideawhathewasgoingtoplay! Whatemergedwasafascinating improvisedpieceofmusicwhichwas verywellreceivedbytheaudience. Afteradonationwasmadetochurch fundstohelpwiththerunningcosts, atotalof£425wasraisedonthe nightandsincethen,Maureenhas receivedafurther£30indonations makingatotalof£455forLOROS. MaureenandRachaelwouldliketo thanktheaudience,everyonewho helpedwiththeconcertandtheten localbusinesseswhodonatedraffle prizesfortheirsupportinhelpingto raisemoneyforLOROS.

BaldwinTrust Celebrate40th Anniversary

formerLeicesterFrithHospital;40 yearslatertheTrustisstillgoing strong,providingcrewednarrowboat cruisesforcommunity,friendsand familygroupsintheir fullywheelchair accessibleboats. Almost70volunteers andtheirpartners cametogetherforan eveningoffunto launchthe anniversary celebrations–rope throwing,linedancing andaquizbasedon therichhistoryofthe BaldwinTrustwereall includedintheevening’s entertainment.TheTrustvolunteers wereaddressedbyRichardJayes, actingChair,whoremindedall volunteersoftheimportantrolethey play.“Withoutyou,ourvolunteers,we wouldnotbeabletoprovide somanytripstosuchawide varietyoforganisations; fromtheUkrainianrefugee grouptogroupsofchildren withadditionalneeds;so manymembersofour communitybenefitfromtime onthewater.”

Formanyyears,Iacceptedthatif anyonespecialcamefortea,my motherwouldgetthedragon’sbreath chinaout.Itwasn’tuntilIquestioned itlater,thatIsuddenlyrealisedthat shewasactuallysaying‘granny’s bestchina’Or,remembering,when young,learningapoemoffbyheart whichexhortedmeto‘pitymice implicitly’whenIshouldhavebeen reciting‘pitymysimplicity’.YesIdid feelabitsimplewhenIrealisedthatI hadbeendeliveringpleastonurture therodentpopulation!

Intermsofinconvenience,thereare manydisabilitiesthatcanplaguethe humanbeingagreatdealmorethan beinghardofhearing,butitmustrate asoneofthemostirritatingand exasperatingintermsofthe confusionitcancause.Bothforthe listenerandthespeakertoo,who occasionallyfindstheresponseto theirquestionashardlylucid,never mindfitting.

Embarrassmentmushroomsonall sides,withwordsandphrases misheardandmisunderstood.Inmy owncase,havingbeenbornwithlittle morethanresidualhearinginoneear andtheotherone,although presentingassmallandshell-like, containingnoreceptiveapparatusat all,ittookafewyearsbeforeIwas abletoseetheoccasionalhumourin theaffliction.Eventhen,itwasoften notsharedbythespeaker.The resultingmisinterpretationmighthave seemedatrifleamusingtomebutdid notnecessarilyhavethesameeffect onthespeaker.Invariablytheywould eitherlookannoyedwithmefor causingtheirperplexityorbendover backwardstotryandsparemeany discomfiture.Mostpeoplewhohave severehearingproblemsprobably, withoutrealisingit,trytolipreadthe speaker’slipswhichmayhelp.Even theoddwordortwo,understood correctly,cangivecontexttowhatis beingconveyedinspeech,ascan facialexpressions.

Buildingonthesuccessoflastyear’s event,SystonandDistrictVolunteer Centrewillonceagainshowcase localcommunityservice organisationsinaspecial“Helpisat Hand!”Pavilionaspartofthisyear’s SummerFayreonCentralParkon Saturday2ndSeptember.

Subsidiseddisplayareas,withina specialmarquee,willfeaturelocal not-for-profitorganisationsandother companies-whichoffersocial, cultural,sporting,educational, financial,healthandemotional supporttothoseinneed,easing problemsandenhancingthequality oflife.Theshowisintendedto demonstratethat,throughthewealth ofactivevoluntaryorganisations, whatevertheneedmightbe,thereis alocalsolution.

LastEaster,againinMeltonMowbray,he sawadriverswervingallovertheroad andassumedthedriverwasill,possibly havingaheartattack.Heunselfishlyused hisownvehicletoforcethedrivertostop. Itturnedoutthedriverwasheavilyunder theinfluenceofalcoholwhichofcourse resultedina999policecall.IfTonyhad ignoredthis,thedrunkdrivercouldhave killedhimselforotherssoTonyacted totallyunselfishly,potentiallyputtinghis ownlifeatseriousrisktosaveothers.

Another999callwhenTonyfoundan unconsciousmanlyingintheroadinthe earlyhoursofthemorningoutsidePizza ExpressagaininMeltonMowbray.

HadtoBreakintoaCustomer’sHouse

ThistimeitwasinRearsbythatsawour herospringintolife.Hecouldn’tgeta responsefromanelderlycustomer’s housebutsawlightson.Onceagainthis wasintheearlyhourswhenhecalled 999whosaiditwouldtakeawhilebefore theycouldgetthere.So,withtheir knowledgeheforcedentryintothehouse wherehefoundthevictimslumpedand strugglingtobreathe.Tonylaterlearned thatthepoorvictimhadsuffereda seizureandalsohadpneumonia.

encourageyoungerpeopletotake partinthecompetition,andto highlightgardenswheretenantshave usedmoreenvironmentally-friendly methods.

“Thegarden competitionis alwayspopular, andoneofthe highlightsofthe yearfortenants andcouncil officers.Thereis alwaysafriendly, inclusivefeelto thecompetition, andthestandard ofthegardens justseemstoget betterandbetter.

Counciltenantsarebeing encouragedtoenteranannual gardencompetition.

TheeventisrunbyCharnwood BoroughCouncil(CBC)andisopen toitstenantswhoonceagainare beingurgedtoshowcasetheirskills inthegarden.

Thisyear,thereareeightcategories toenter:

� Bestnewcomer

� Fruitorvegetablegarden

� Hangingbasket,windowboxand balcony

� Shelteredcourtgarden

� Communalorsharedgarden

� Houseorflatgarden

� Children’sgarden(entrantmustbe under16)

� Greenergarden(mustshowthe useofupcycling,recycling,planting ofwildflowers,environmentally friendly).

PeterOliver,directorofhousingand wellbeingatCharnwoodBorough Council,said:“Everyyearweare astoundedbytheeffortsofourgreenfingeredcounciltenants,andI’msure 2023willbenodifferent.Wehave createdtwonewcategoriesto

Entriesforthetenantgarden competitionneedtobesubmittedby Friday2ndJune andjudgingwill takeplacebetween10thand14th July.Thewinnersandrunners-upwill receivehighstreetshopping vouchersasprizes.

Duetothechangesinweather throughouttheyearandtheeffect thatthiscanhaveongardens, applicantscanalsosubmitpicturesof theirgardensbetweennowandthe judgingdatestoensurethattheyare beingjudgedattheirverybest. TheCouncilhasaround5,500 propertiesandthecompetitionisone wayofcelebratingtenants’pridein theirhomesandcommunities.

InMarch,SystonTownC.C’s women’steam,theSirens,wonthe firstsilverwareoftheseasonby becomingWomen’sIndoorSocial LeagueCountyChampions.Captain HannahDriverandherteamare showninthephotographwiththeir trophy.Whatabrilliantresultanda superbwaytosettheseasonoff. Verywelldoneladies.

UnfortunatelytheweatherinMarch wasnotverykindwithtwicethe averagerainfallduringthemonth. Thisresultedingroundpreparation worksbeingbehindscheduleand althoughtheseasonwillnowbe underway,atthetimeofwritingsome sunshineandwarmweatherwere desperatelyneeded.However, despitethegloom,theplanned improvementstotheclubhousewere completedbeforethestartofthe season.Asplendidnewcarpetwas laidintheclubroombyCostcutter Carpets,newchairswerepurchased fromLeicesterOfficeEquipmentLtd
