Syston’s Remembrance Sunday Parade

On Sunday 10th November, Syston fell silent at 11.00am to remember those who gave their tomorrow for our today.

As always the community of Syston had gathered in their masses to remember members of the military who gave their lives and as always it was an incredible turnout.

Two pipers had set off ahead of the parade which was lead by Parade Master, Darren Rickman.

The parade consisted of the Scout Band, VIPS including Police SGT Downes and Deputy Lieutenant

of Leicestershire Mr Patel (DL), Syston and Deville les Rouen Twinning, Veterans, Members of Syston’s Royal British Legion (RBL), Local Councillors, Army Cadets, Scouts, Guides and other local community groups.

At 10.55am, The service was given by Sue Essex followed by a short reading from the poem, For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon, read by Tony Bond. The Last Post was played and Syston fell silent at 11am before hearing Reveille to mark the end of the silence and the beginning of the wreath laying. Mr Patel DL began the wreath laying, see picture right. The service ended with a hymn and the Lord’s Prayer followed by The National Anthem before Darren Rickman led the parade back to the car park for dismissal.

RBL Vice Chairman, Paul Baxter said: ‘As Vice Chairman of Syston RBL and organiser of this year’s Remembrance Parade, I would like to thank firstly the Royal British Legion members, then

everyone that was on the parade.

Excellent playing by the two pipers. Not forgetting all the people of Syston who turned up to support the parade and thank you to our great supporters who did the marshalling and to Carl Petch for the sound system. Thank you all, you did an excellent job and all the kids should be especially proud of themselves. All the junior flag bearers and the three children who read out the names of those lost in the wars, you all should be so proud of yourselves. Darren Rickman did an amazing job as parade master as usual. Thanks also to Penny Rickman at The Malt House Club for letting us use your Malt House Suite. Continues on page 7

Optimal Hearing Opens In Syston

Paul Hope, pictured above in the clinic, owner of Optimal Hearing is opening a state of the art Hearing clinic here in Syston.

Paul said: ‘it’s the ideal site for my new clinic. I’m already reconnecting with people I haven’t seen for years, and bumped into some I used to play rugby with, I feel I’ve returned to the community. I’m bringing everything I’ve learned throughout my career and I wanted to come back to my roots, to give back to the community I grew up in.’

He continued by saying: ‘My new clinic will be technologically more advanced than any clinic I’ve ever seen or worked in, I’m investing in additional technologies, testing and programming capabilities to give me the ability to take things to the next

level, and have the clinic capability to meet all customer needs. The reason why it’s called ‘Optimal Hearing’ is because when someone leaves I want them to literally have optimal hearing, to be confident that they are hearing as well as they possibly can do.

Paul’s staff have hospitality and dental backgrounds, they’re creating something special. They have ample parking, it’s wheelchair accessible, Paul designed everything to be on one floor, and a wheelchair can access the front desk and service lab area.

Paul is incredibly proud of the work the team and he has done on the clinic, he has built their own soundproof booths, large enough to fit a wheelchair in.

Anyone can walk in without an appointment to get their hearing aid thoroughly serviced. This service doesn’t exist elsewhere to his knowledge. If you have a hearing aid issue, you don’t need to sit in silence, you can come in and they will be the trusted hub for the Syston community.

Paul said he was not willing to compromise on choice or technology for the customer, and their leading partner at Widex know and support this approach. Many mainstream brands have limited options, the

customer deserves the best choice and independence, so Optimal Hearing be stocking a full range of Widex hearing aids as well as many others.

Paul finished by saying that his entire family have been so supportive, it’s a big financial risk but he believes in this clinic and the community, and he knows he’ll have done the right thing when he sees his grandma become a customer, who has been suffering from health issues recently, it will all have been worth it!

Syston Cancer Research Raffle Winner

Colin Goodwin was fortunate to win one of the prizes (Bottle of Vodka & 16 Cans of Vodka Cocktails) in aid of Cancer Research raffle.

Tracey Smith a volunteers to run the raffles which are quite successful in raising funds. One of the reasons Colin especially supports Cancer Research is because he had bladder Cancer in 2010.

The symptoms were spotted when I had a routine blood and water sample test in the Heart Disease Clinic run by the Health Centre after having had a heart attack in 2001.

The practice nurse who ran the clinic spotted an invisible trace of blood in my urine, that would not be noticeable when passing water so fortunately in my case it was detected early and systematically removed thanks to the Health Centre and Leicester General Hospital.

I would urge every adult to have their water sample checked just in case.

Tales From The Plot

Time seems to pass so fast, this year seems to have flown by!

It’s the last chance to clear any weeds from this year’s growing season. I try my hardest to start with a clean slate, keeping the current year’s weeds under control is enough of a job without having to deal with last year’s as well. It’s also the shortest day at the end of this month.

into a show LOL! I have some carrots left in but sadly most of those have been attacked by the carrot fly. I do have a few winter cabbage but that’s about it for Christmas, not the abundance I usually have ….. the sad thing is I don’t really know where I’ve gone wrong.

Luckily we have plenty put by in the freezer, looking back at the year it’s not been the best however I had the biggest crop of broad beans I’ve ever had ….. magnificent and they’re all in the freezer to be enjoyed throughout the year. I had a good crop of onions also and as usual to keep us going till just after Christmas. My French beans were good, runners not quite so good, and sadly I only managed about half the sweetcorn crop that I’m used to. Peas this year unfortunately were a total disaster between pigeons and flea beetle they didn’t stand a chance. Lots of lessons for next year.

Now is the time to take a bit of time to reflect on your successes and to consider what went wrong with any disappointments, always remember that there are no failures in gardening it is almost always down to the weather! I suppose one of the saving graces is we haven’t had to water much this year, it seems to have been quite a wet year.

I had quite a disappointment this year, I’m normally able to supply all the vegetables necessary for the table at Christmas and the fact that only the turkey I haven’t produced myself always feels quite an achievement - sadly this year has not been the best. The leeks have done remarkably well and it’s also been a good year for potatoes, but my brussels have been slow to fill out and I have quite a few that have burst open before making size, and I only havea couple of swedes worth taking home. I have a few parsnips but none of which you’d want to enter

There isn’t anything to sow in the garden this month, however I normally set my onion seeds off between Christmas and New Year in a tray on my spare room windowsill. Clingfilm over the top of the tray helps to aid germination.

Check over all your garden tools in the shed to make sure that they are safe and fit to use next season. Clean and wipe down all wooden handles with linseed oil, it not only preserves the wood but makes the wood easier on the hands. Check for pests and diseases on any produce in store especially for rat and mouse damage ….. set traps to catch them if you have to.

And of course the most important thing is to have a great Christmas, and I wish you all the best for the New Year.

Dear Editor,

I was stuck at the roundabout by a huge lorry wanting to turn from High St to Melton Rd towards Tesco.

I'm getting increasingly concerned about the size of lorries that regularly come through the town and wondering if you could highlight it.

See the photograph of the problem. I'm concerned about the effect on other traffic, pedestrians and cyclists not to mention the street furniture.

Many thanks,

Jo Kay

We passed this onto our Borough and County councillors as requested by the author, before going to print and County Cllr Tom Barkley has said he will take this up at County level.

Continued from front page

He continued his thanks to: ‘Paula Lowe and Sarah provided a brilliant spread of food and our singer Sandra Olinski, sang fantastically. Again thank you all sincerely. I’ve never been so proud to be part of Syston.’

Thank you to everyone for such an incredible turnout and for another beautiful year of remembrance. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them

Tinsel Time, Out Comes the Baubles!

Hopefully readers managed to catch sight of some of the clearance activity last month along by the car park through to the Memorial Park, the Environment Agency (the cavalry) finally found their way to Syston (late) but what confusion over the main car park closure, plus the Brookside (near St Peters Street, no one seems to know who owns that bit of land, do you?) oh and those ‘well publicised start dates which changed, without it seems many actually knowing’, you could write a book, our suggested title, ‘Oh What A Circus’!

Now the big stuffs done let's all keep an eye on the infamous ‘butchers beach’ area by the main Melton Road bridge, no more arches blocked please, we don’t need that particular tourist attraction back now do we?

What we do need is those monthly inspections ‘by the EA’ to actually be meaningful, not a quick glance over the railings, tick a box and move on, our brooks maintenance over 20 years has been shameful.

Inspections and maintenance by all those responsible needs to be fit for purpose, the purpose being, to keep the Barkby Brook flowing through town, in its banks, not out of it! Syston deserves better, all ofthose you pay your rates to need to be ‘seen actuallydoing their bit’ as riparian owners, it is (always has been) their responsibility to maintain the banks of the land they own to the middle of the brook! Letsnot forget our businesses who also own the land from where they trade, the landlords who sublet their shops and warehousing, they are alsoriparian owners and have a duty to maintain their stretch and keep the watercourse flowing, we acknowledge it’s complicated for private residents who’s homes border the brook, you should seek advice, if in doubt contact the Environment Agency.

But, here’s a smile, the EA subcontractors by the brook last month must have chuckled watching the ‘pictures’ being taken of a

representative of our council ‘working on trees’ (for social media) such a shame there’s been no enthusiasm to actually do any maintenance to the banks of the section that they ‘actually own’ for many many years - ironic really!

Nearly there, teas mashing!

The ‘Syston Community Flood Group’ (SCFG) is a low key group who just wanted to do positive things to help, there’s been ups, there’s been downs finding the right balance,a right faff becoming ‘official like’ but their getting there with local companies now showing their support (those that have, we thank you).

They will continue to keep in contact with LCC/CBC/EA this winter to chase up any outstanding area’s identified They've also been busy raising awareness of the poor condition of the brook along Meadow Lane, with blockages reported several times to the EA over the last eight months (and more recently a landowner)! Sadly though it’s not just nature that caused this blockage to grow, any readers remember those mislaid branches from the conifer trees they lopped or the old fence panels they replaced, or even a large electrical item which mysteriously found its way out of its domestic setting, well the SCFG found them for you, it wasn’t beavers who added to one particular blockage, it was people!

We trust that 2025 will bring positive things to the town, that residents who were badly effected will find peace once again on returning home, and local businesses will work together with the community and that 2024 will be put well and truly behind us allwhere it belongs!

Support your local businesses this Christmas folks, look out for your neighbours, look after ‘your’ part of Barkby Brook, a ‘kind’ word and a ‘bit of help’ goes a long way!

Syston’s Only Dedicated Newspaper

Thank you

On behalf of the residents of Syston we want to say a huge thank you to The Environment Agency’s (EA) contractors for clearing the brook around the Melton Road car park and down to the railway bridge in Memorial park, it has made a huge difference to the width of the brook and will hopefully prevent any houses from being flooded in the years to come.

Residents who had been flooded in October 2023 and January 2024 have spent the year watching the level of the brook whenever it rains, they have said: ‘that since the de-silt they can now rest easier, as with the recent storm Bert when the water levels rose to those similar to January 2024, but thankfully the Brook didn’t break its banks.’

Also, to thank all those who have worked tirelessly since the floods in October 2023 and January 2024, including our MP Edward Argar, County, Borough and Town Councillors plus the officers at these agencies. Not forgetting our wonderful Syston Flood Wardens and the Syston Community Flood Group who have all been in direct contact with the EA since the floods. This has helped to get this much needed and over due work done on the Barkby Brook which was designated a river

in 2006 between Deville Park through the town to where it joins the River Wreake down Meadow Lane.

All your hard work and perseverance as finally got this work done.

See the images here and below, courtesy of the Syston Community Flood Group, showing the Brook before and after near the

However, the community needs to continue to keep the Brook clear of vegetation and rubbish.

The Syston Community Flood Group will continue to work with the EA and all local authorities to keep our beautiful brook clear and help to reduce any future flooding.

Keep Syston Tidy

It’s the little actions that help make the bigger ones possible!

If we all dispose of our waste from plastic bottles, sweet wrappers up to the big household items correctly we are all doing our bit to keep Syston Tidy and in return we keep our rivers clean and tidy too! As that is where carelessly discarded items end up! From dropping litter near the brook in the centre of Syston to fly tipping down Mill Lane and Meadow Lane. It can end up in our rivers and canals causing problems for wildlife and if not removed, it will continue down the River Soar which flows into the River Trent which in turn flows into the North sea! This then pollutes our seas and beyond.

So any small act we do to dispose of litter and rubbish correctly, we are in turn saving our planet!

It also makes a walk along our rivers and canals much more enjoyable without all the detritus.

The pictures below were taken in October this year and show a huge build up of rubbish in the Canal near Syston Lock!

It included plastic bottles, trees, and a large fridge or fridge freezer! If all this waste had been disposed of correctly the rivers and canals in our area wouldn’t look like this.

The Environment Agency has just desilted the Barkby Brook through the centre of Syston, so to keep this watercourse flowing through and to help prevent future flooding to residents, see images of before and after the desilt in the Thank You article on page 11.

Please think before you drop litter! There are waste bins throughout Syston. If you are not near one, keep your litter with you until you are or take it home and put in the appropriate waste bin there!

If you have large items to dispose of Charnwood Borough Council provide a collection scheme see details on their website: www.charnwood.gov. uk/pages/special_collections

If you use someone to take your waste away make sure they are registered, a registered collector will be happy to show you their licence. If they aren’t then use someone else, otherwise you could face a fine.

Please Keep Syston Tidy!

Jeanne Douglas offers psychic readings in Palmistry, Tarot, Crystal and Personal Astrology. Her telephone numbers are 01664 562 471 or 07931 293 855.

ARIES March 20 - April 19

Whilst you don't like being reminded of current upsets and dilemmas, you're working hard to manifest your dreams and are aiming high! Others are impressed and colleagues have business ideas to offer and friends spur you on. An admirer at work has some sound advice to help you move ahead and get a promotion.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

You draw a line under past regrets and put it all behind you whilst you simultaneously put that very clever brain into gear! Your cash situation goes from strength to strength and you make others sit up and take notice with your ideas. Some minor disagreement at home is only temporary and could well turn into good humour.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

You get the chance to focus on a cash idea close to your heart such as a hobby or fun pursuit! Either way, money comes easily to you and this improves your confidence and opens up your social life. You push hard at work and leave others standing; this opens up more opportunities to develop a new project much to your liking.

CANCER June 21 - July 21

You spend cash unexpectedly and yet deep down this is such fun! Romance is in the air when someone in a strong position smiles at you. Just take it slowly for this could cause waves in your world. Study and research go well even though there's a lot to do. Use your creative imagination too with this because it's running high.

LEO July 22 - August 22

There seems to be quite a few practical tasks to be done and this sees you busier than usual and even in your spare time. Someone looks on you favourably at work and does you a favour, allowing you to impress and get ahead. Relationships are demanding and require hard work! It's a good job that you're so terribly fond of them.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

Life is quiet for you personally but everyone around you seems preoccupied with one thing or another! You offer to help a loved one with a heavy workload only to be swept along with one of their wonderful dreams or two. A friend has a painful and difficult problem emerging which could well be linked to childhood trauma.

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

Suddenly you're not too sure about a recent decision and course of action. You can see how this could cause problems for others. Still you work hard and put your ideas to good use. Your home life goes well with a loved one calling the shots! But it seems like there are problems and issues to sort out on the domestic front.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21

You're a little unsure of your life direction as matters around you go a little dormant. It’s best to wait awhile therefore before you make decisions and move forward. A loved one comes up with some answers and talking matters through with your friends also helps. You finally get your clever brain into gear with your finances.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 20

You're starting to see things in a crystal clear fashion and previous dilemmas are now solved. This puts you in a secure position and there will be no stopping you now! As you go from strength to strength over the next month, expect family and friends to gather round and offer their ideas and advice.

CAPRICORN Dec 21 - Jan 19

You finally see what you want emotionally and this leads to a decision which offers you strength and security. However, it also means that there is a great deal to sort out and this may be challenging at times. Some minor disagreement with a friend quickly blows over whilst another offers you good advice.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 17

You can't help relaxing this month and letting your hair down! For you're in the mood for romance and also enjoying yourself. This is amazing fun and you feel as though you finally have got a handle on life. Whilst you work hard you also spend cash on a few cherished dreams. Work is tough at times but study goes well.

PISCES Feb 18 - March 19

You work hard on an emotional problem and see that you have a chance of solving it, albeit creatively! This time, your impractical ideas could even work out. You're getting really quite good at your job and others finally appreciate you. However, some side line or business venture could also really take off successfully. Hurrah!

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery

Hi everybody,

I hope you have had the best New Year that you could and hope that this year brings you what you need. It’s a quiet time of the year for our lovely cemetery. The wreaths will start to be removed from the beginning of February. The dead flowers will continue to be removed as and when as normal.

The wildflower garden should start to appear soon, planting the seeds will be in early March, it should look fantastic. New fencing has been put up to hide the sand, the tubs and compost area etc.

We are delighted to have been awarded the top award in the Best New Entry category and the award is situated in thewaiting room area.

As usual if you’d like to join friends of the cemetery or if you wish to hire our beautiful chapel (seat cushions will soon be arriving if they’re not already in situ), please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150. Likewise, if you want to plant a Standard Rose along the gravel runways in memory of a loved one who has died.

A bit of great news for you, as many of you will be aware we have not been allowed to have normal tea light candles in the chapel since last Christmas unless there was somebody on site. We recently attended a meeting at the council of the amenities committee and they agreed that we could now have the lighted tea light candles providing that the risk is managed sufficiently, which we have agreed to do.

Take care everyone Love Ros.

Local Barber Shop Forced To Close After Exploding Main Cable Poses Fire Risk

Razors Barber Shop, was forced to close temporarily following a dangerous incident involving an exploding main electrical cable. The incident occurred early morning on Tuesday 19th November, just as they were preparing to open for the day.

ageing infrastructure and the extremely cold weather. While thankfully no fire broke out, following their inspection, they deemed the building unsafe for further operations until extensive repairs could be carried out by National Grid.

“As I arrived for work, Chris told me there had been an extremely loud bang down in the cellar, although all the power was still on. I lifted the cellar hatch and smoke started to come into the shop. I dropped the hatch and closed off the vents at the front of the shop, and called 999. They arrived in minutes and were amazing. By the time they arrived, we had evacuated the shop and the flat above and were keeping a safe distance.

Firefighters and electrical engineers identified the source of the explosion as a deteriorating main cable, which had been under strain due to an

Speaking to the Stn, shop owner Steve Wigg expressed his concern over the sudden closure. “This shop has been part of the community for 30 years and it’s devastating to think that something so out of our control could put it all at risk.” he said. “We hope to reopen very soon, but right now, our priority is making sure everyone stays safe.”

residents rallied around the shop, and Kyle at Hubbard Hair came to the rescue and offered the use of his shop until the work could be carried out. “Once again the community stepped up and helped out, and we were able to carry on our appointment from around lunchtime” Steve said. “For that I will be ever grateful.”

Utility company representatives carried out the repair work overnight, to restore the power safely. This allowed Steve to reopen the shop on the Thursday morning.

For now, the incident at Razors Barber Shop serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of maintaining public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of cherished local businesses.

Busy Autumn Term

The Autumn term is always a busy one in schools. Wreake Valley Academy’s new Headteacher, Ben Rackley is keen to share some of the activities that have been happening at Wreake and Bradgate Sixth Form. The students have been working hard in their lessons across the school. The sixth form students have been entering their early applications for universities. One has already been offered an interview at Cambridge!

In Year 10 the most able students have started the Baby Elephant programme which has been designed to enable students to achieve the highest possible grades to support them on the next step of their journey.

The new Year 7 students have settled in well, enjoying the wealth of resources and opportunities Wreake have on offer for their students. At Wreake the students are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities that are on offer to them, from the countless trips to places such as De Montfort University, Hunstanton and the National Arboretum or the opportunities within the school such as sports team, or the latest drama production.

This year students are performing Made in Dagenham, they are looking

forward to welcoming parents and the wider community to see this in February.

Carla Connolley, Head of Performing Arts said: “There is something to appeal to all the students, to allow them to develop their passions and create memories that they will carry with them for a lifetime.”

There is also some large investment by the Bradgate Education Partnership Trust in the building itself at Wreake, with the renovation of a suite of classrooms, and library space. Such investment will only benefit the students and wider community as Wreake continues to provide a space for the community to come together to learn, celebrate and succeed.

Let us Know ...

If you have do have information, thoughts or ideas that you wish to share with the school but aren't sure who to speak to, you can now contact them using our new Feedback Form. Simply go to the school’s website click the Let Us Know link on the homepage, and let them know the information you would like to tell them about. Mr Rackley, Headteacher commented that: “We may not always be able to respond to each individual message, but rest assured all messages will be read and discussed by the senior team.”

Let's celebrate!

Sonia Pope – Deputy Head of school said: “We want to celebrate the amazing achievements of our young people within our school community. It is fantastic to hear about the competition that a young person has been involved in, a new skill they have accomplished or just something that a young person should be very proud of!”

“We want to encourage you to share those achievements with us by emailing achievement@wreake. bepschools.org so we can celebrate these wonderful milestones”

Wreake Valley Academy is a cornerstone of the Syston community, it is great to see it starting to share the magic that is taking place each and everyday.

Mindful Healing: How Yoga Transforms Mental Health

Yoga, an ancient practice originating from India, combines physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation, and mindfulness. While yoga is widely known for its physical benefits— improved flexibility, strength, and posture—it is also a potent method for enhancing mental and emotional well-being.

If you’re interested in learning massage, Reiki, yoga and achieve deep relaxation through guided meditations and sound baths, please sign up to the Himalayan Healing Retreat at Nanpantan Hall, 21st to 23rd February 2025 at www.ishansattva.com

Practical Tips for Integrating Yoga into Your Routine

Whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, integrating yoga into your daily routine can yield tremendous benefits for your mental health. Here are some simple tips to get started:

● Start Small: If you’re new to yoga, begin with short, manageable sessions. Even 10 - 15 minutes a day of gentle yoga or guided meditation can make a significant difference in reducing stress and improving your mood.

● Focus on Breathwork: Incorporating pranayama (breath control) into your yoga practice is essential for mental clarity and emotional regulation. Try simple breathing exercises like deep belly breathing or alternate nostril breathing to calm the mind.

● Mindful Movement: Yoga is not about pushing your body to the limit. Focus on slow, mindful movements that align with your breath, allowing you to stay present in the moment. This can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

● Consistency is Key: The mental health benefits of yoga accumulate over time, so consistency is crucial. Aim to practise regularly, even if it’s just a few minutes each day, to maintain emotional balance and resilience.

Join the free classes here in Syston Hari has been running free classes on mental health, the yoga system and sound baths which have grown in popularity and can be signed up through www.ishan-sattva.com.

1. Anxiety Reduction

One of the most significant findings from the paper is yoga’s ability to reduce symptoms of anxiety. In many of the trials reviewed, participants

practising yoga showed a notable decrease in anxiety levels compared to those who engaged in other activities or received standard care. Yoga’s emphasis on breath control and mindfulness helps regulate the nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the body’s stress response. By engaging the parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s ‘rest and digest’ mode), yoga facilitates a calming effect, making it particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders.

2. Depression Alleviation

Depression is another common mental health condition where yoga has proven to be beneficial. Studies demonstrate that regular yoga practice can reduce depressive symptoms, with some participants experiencing significant improvements in mood and overall mental health.

Yoga encourages mindfulness and self-awareness, helping individuals break free from negative thought patterns. Furthermore, physical activity, including yoga, increases the release of endorphins and serotonin, which are chemicals in the brain associated with happiness and wellbeing.

3. Stress Management

Stress is a pervasive issue that affects mental and physical health, and yoga has been shown to be a powerful tool for stress reduction. Research has found that yoga interventions effectively lowered stress levels across a variety of populations, including students, healthcare professionals, and patients with chronic conditions. Yoga’s focus on breathing techniques, combined with gentle movements and meditation, helps reduce cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone. This leads to a more balanced and relaxed state, allowing individuals to better cope with everyday stressors.

4. Cognitive Function and Quality of Life

Beyond anxiety, depression, and stress, the paper also highlights the positive impact of yoga on cognitive function and overall quality of life. Some studies in the review suggest that yoga can enhance memory, attention, and executive functioning, making it a useful tool for individuals looking to boost mental clarity and cognitive performance.

Additionally, the holistic nature of yoga - addressing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being - contributes to an improved sense of life satisfaction and quality. Regular practitioners report feeling more balanced, centred, and emotionally stable, which translates into better

relationships, work performance, and personal happiness. Ishan-Sattva.

Citizens Advice Charnwood Offer

Advice on How to Avoid Falling into Debt over Christmas

‘My children love Christmas and they’re already picking extra treats off the shelf when we go shopping, and telling me what presents they want. I really want to make it a special time for them, but times are tough and I can’t help worrying about overspending and getting into debt. What can I do to manage my finances during the holiday season, and where can I turn if I find myself struggling?’

The festive season can be a financially challenging time, and often borrowing money or using a credit card to fund Christmas can seem like your only option. But there are steps you can take to keep your spending under control and avoid falling into debt.

The first thing to do is make a budget and stick to it.

Consider who you’re buying gifts for, what other seasonal expenses you have, and how much you can realistically afford to spend. Always keep receipts, or ask for gift receipts, in case you overspend and need to

return something. And remember that household bills may be higher during this period due to colder weather and spending more time indoors. If you’ve built up debt, please don't ignore bills or letters. Speak to the organisations you owe money to, as they may let you pay smaller amounts.

Pay 'priority debts' first, like rent, mortgage arrears, council tax, and energy bills. For other types of debt like credit cards or loans, gather all the information on what you owe, create a budget, and contact your creditors to set up an affordable repayment plan. This might seem scary, but it’s an important first step. If your budget just doesn’t add up and you need help to afford essentials like food and bills , see what cost of living support is available on the Citizens Advice website: https://www.citizensadvice. org.uk/debt-and-money/cost-of-living/ get-help-with-the-cost-of-living/ It’s especially important to check if you’re eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, which will now only be paid to those who receive Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits. If you make a claim for Pension Credit by 21st December, you might still receive the Winter Fuel Payment. If you do find yourself struggling

financially during or after the holidays, don't panic. Support is out there, and Citizens Advice Charnwood can help you understand what’s available. We’re here to help you find a way forward.

Wonderful Grant

St Peter and St Paul’s church was recently awarded a grant of £5,000 by the Archbishops’ Council from the Buildings for Mission MR&I Grants Fund for minor repairs and improvements. Significant repair work was carried out on the leaking roof and cracked buttress as well as broken windows, which Syston residents may have observed while walking through the churchyard. The congregation give thanks for this gift which has contributed greatly to the upkeep of the church.

Our fundraisers are busy working at raising funds to install a toilet in the church as well as a servery. The

church is without heating at the moment and we are making plans to install an environmentally friendly replacement system. Please support our fundraisers this Christmas by attending the Christmas Tree Festival on 6th to 8th December and Christmas Market and Cafe on 7th December at 10.00am.

QUALITY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS

Syston Knitting Banxy

If you are wondering why there wasn’t a tribute in Syston this year for remembrance by SKB, it was because of this project, which we shared on social media in November as it was kept secret until 11th November.

It is an amazing piece of artwork by our very own superstar Syston Knitting Banxy (SKB).

The story behind the piece is very moving. A clipping from the Leicester Journal Friday 19th 1915 read: ‘Private Ball of Loughborough, 8th Leicesters, was wounded on November 3rd 1915 and is now in Cheltenham Hospital. Where he is making good progress. He was buried with others in a dug out, and was unconscious when extricated, and suffers from the shock. A curious incident is related in connection with a dog. When Private Ball was married this year, a terrier dog came to the church and would not be driven away. The animal awaited the coming of his friend and was in the porch on his emerging with his newlywedded wife.

We can now share it with readers who may not have seen what she had created for the secret garden at Glenfield Hospital.

Since being in the trenches, it was noticed that a dog was continually coming over from the German lines and following Private Ball. The dog was found buried in the dugout with the Leicesters, and when extricated was found to be dead.’

It also noted that Pte Ball survived the Great War. The fate of his 8th

Battalion comrades could not be established.

This very poignant piece will be kept by the hospital as the part of their secret garden which was itself a convalescent hospital during and after the 1st World War, so it is fitting that this piece of artwork by SKB will remain at the hospital and used in their remembrance garden in future years.

It took SKB over 600 hours to create this amazing piece, which is not only the soldier and the dog, but the bench as well, and explains why she couldn’t take on many other requests. It is also why we haven’t created a calendar for 2025, but we will look into creating one for 2026.

We want to thank SKB on behalf of the town for all the wonderful toppers and bollard toppers she does to bring a smile and joy to everyone who has the pleasure of seeing them.

Her latest one is at the King Power stadium and part of a display, she believes after the display is taken down the topper will be auctioned off, so look out on her facebook page for details if this happens.

The ‘Mindfulness and Meditation’ group members had expressed an interest in Tai Chi and, always willing to oblige, I arranged to extend this opportunity to all Syston and District U3A members. What a pity you were unable to join us.

Oh what fun we all had. On the last Wednesday of October at Syston Community Centre 31 of us learnt that the development of Tai Chi originated from China and was written about over three thousand years ago as a Martial Art. It is a

Nasser Butt and Colin who is a Tai Chi exponent from Australia, demonstrated a short programme of beneficial movements to help us improve our health and wellbeing. Despite being relatively easy to accomplish these, the hardest part was managing to complete the simplest exercises SLOWLY! Everyone was able to take part

Once that was completed one of the ladies suggested attaching some of the surplus poppies to the top of the railings which I think set it off nicely.

The group knitted and crocheted many poppies over the summer and we had many more donated from crafters among our friends and

irrespective of their ability. Where necessary they used a chair for additional balance or sat on it as Tai Chi is very inclusive unlike most physical activities. From personal experience Tai Chi is highly effective for muscle strengthening and toning although resulting minor aches were temporary – thankfully.

This was yet another one off event which U3A members can choose to try and, I trust, enjoy.

Next year I am sure there will be more opportunities to celebrate all the things we have always wanted to have a go at and never have. Never fear the U3A is here !

We are now fast approaching the end of 2024 which means we are preparing for our Christmas break at MADS. So what have we been up to recently? Well, For Halloween, our members made some lovely crafts which they seemed to be very pleased with once they saw their final products. A couple of the crafts included making A Spooky Autumnal Wreath, putting together A Skull Flowerbox, a Wooden scene which was layered up to give a slight 3D effect or a little wooden house for LED lights to sit in (pictured below).

We recently had a very generous donation from Shoe Zone and we want to send them our biggest thank you. Their donation will be a massive help to our cause and will benefit the group in helping our members to feel happier and to hopefully help them fight their mental battles.

To give everyone a smile and a giggle, I even turned up to that session dressed as a Hufflepuff Student from Harry Potter. I always aim to dress up on our Halloween session as it just gives them something to laugh and smile about and that's all that matters.

We recently had a visit from U3A’s Happy Ukulele Band too and It was lovely to see everyone signing along and enjoying the music. We always have a blast when the Happy Ukulele Band perform for us, Len always gives everyone a reason to smile, laugh and have fun. The Happy Ukulele Band are regular visitors to our group and its nice to see their music enjoyed every visit.

As we are closing in on the end of the year, we are preparing for our final session which will take place on Wednesday 18th December 2024. This is the session that we decide to throw a little Party for our members so that we can all have a little celebration together before the group closes over the Christmas period. In the meantime, we will keep our members busy with crafts, games and all things fun and enjoy the last sessions of 2024 together.

We want to say thank you to the Brookside Working Men’s Club in Syston for letting us use and continue to use the Brookside Suite through 2024 and we look forward to continuing with the group in 2025 at their premises.

We want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we will see you for a new article and update in the February 2025 issue!

We will re-open again on Wednesday 8th January 2025.

Roundhill Christmas Fair

We are delighted to be holding our second Christmas Fair at Roundhill Academy. Last year we raised over £600 for Loros.

We are hoping this year’s event will be bigger, better and more successful.

This year half the proceeds will be used towards our participation in the Loros Stomp Round Leicester event in 2025. We will adopt our own elephant sculpture which will be designed and decorated by staff and students. Please see the link for more information: https://stomproundleicester.co.uk

The rest of the money will be used for in-house projects chosen by students and our student leadership group.

Our fair is taking place on Saturday 7th December between 11.00am and 2.00pm. It is free entry.

There will a variety of craft stalls, a tombola, Christmas decorations, refreshments, music and dance. It will be a wonderful event for all the family.

Misinformation Vs. Disinformation

What is misinformation?

Misinformation is "false information that is spread, regardless of intent to mislead."

The spread of misinformation happens often in our everyday lives. We human beings, news flash, are not perfect. We can all make mistakes. We all forget things. We mishear or misremember details. We tell our friends something we heard on TV or saw on social media that wasn't really true. If you are spreading around information that is wrong but you don't know it is wrong, then you are, well, technically, spreading misinformation.

Where does misinformation come from?

Misinformation is first recorded in the late 1500s, and combines information with the prefix mis-, meaning "wrong" or "mistaken." Mistake, misspelling, and misunderstanding are some examples of other common words besides misinformation that use mis- to mean "wrong."

What is disinformation?

Disinformation means "false information, as about a country's military strength or plans, disseminated by a government or intelligence agency in a hostile act of tactical political

subversion." It is also used more generally to mean "deliberately misleading or biased information; manipulated narrative or facts; propaganda."

So, disinformation is misinformation that is knowingly (intentionally) spread. Where does disinformation come from?

Compared to misinformation, disinformation is a relatively new word, first recorded in 1965-70. It's a translation of the Russian word dezinformatsiya, in turn based on the French desinformer ("to misinform"). What is the difference between misinformation and disinformation? When distinguishing between misinformation and disinformation, keep one very important word in mind: intent. Although both words refer to types of wrong or false information, only disinformation is wrong on purpose. While this distinction may seem simple enough, misinformation and disinformation are similar and sometimes interconnected, and so get used interchangeably.

But accuracy matters. Use the word disinformation when you know for a fact that false or erroneous information is being spread on purpose to hurt or damage, especially a government, organization, or public figure. If you don't know for certain why someone is spreading bad information, it's best to use misinformation.

Happy Christmas and New Year

Don’t forget to feed the swans. Please only give them what they will eat because a build up of uneaten food will pollute the water.

Just to remind you my favourite two are Swan and Duck Food (floats on the water) and Wild Bird seed (sinks). Both are available to buy at Pet World in Syston.

Lots of Swan love.

Charnwood Clog Step Dancers are holding an Open Evening 7.45pm Monday January 20th in Rothley Village Hall.

We can lend you clogs to get you started. We are a very friendly group and are keen to recruit new members. You can find out more about us on our website www. charnwoodclog.co.uk or email mail@charnwoodclog.co.uk … or please phone our local Rothley member, Alison on 01163 484528 to find out more.

Clog dancing in England emerged during the Industrial Revolution, when large numbers of young people left the countryside for the new cities. Times were hard. They worked in the mills and had left behind the rituals of agricultural life. They had to invent their own entertainment … to the rhythm of the weaving machines, and with the sound of their clogs on the newly paved streets. Clog dancing became hugely popular during the eighteen hundreds, at the Music Hall, and with lots of competitions. Tap dancing has its origins in clog dancing merging in USA with rythms from Africa.

Charnwood Clog Step Dancers formed in 1977 and have been going strong ever since! We dance a wide selection of traditional styles of step dancing from many parts of the British Isles. The sound of the wooden clogs adds precise percussion to the rhythm of hornpipes, reels, waltzes and jigs. We ‘dance out’ at pubs, fetes and festivals, and put on shows and talks and workshops for interested organisations. Come and see what we do and have a go!
