Wreake Valley Rotary Club Presentation Evening
The Wreake Valley Rotary Club raises money for local, national and international charities and community causes. The main fundraising activities are the Watermead Challenge Run in July and the Santa Street collections at Christmas time, although money is raised by other means as well.
On Monday 26th June, the club held
its presentation evening. Cheques were presented to local charities Thrummy Drummer and Age Concern Syston. Previous recipients of donations attended and each had an opportunity to describe their charity or cause. These included Syston Station Adopters; Rainbows; Mosaic Narrow Boat for Disabled; Soar Valley Food Bank, Buzzing Roots, Age Concern Syston, Cedar Care Café and Together Against Cancer. Also, the Alan Morley award was presented to Peter Bates of Age Concern, see picture below.
past member of Wreake Valley Rotary Club and is awarded to someone who has gone the extra mile in supporting the community. This is very apt for Peter who is a volunteer driver for Age Concern Syston.
The evening finished with a sumptuous buffet provided by the Royal British Legion, Birstall and those present were able to network and share information with each other.
Wreake Valley Rotary Club meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Royal British Legion, Front Street, Birstall and everyone is welcome to join us.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH)?
Have you ever been curious about solution focused hypnotherapy? Not the type of hypnotherapy seen on TV or on holiday but the type that changes how you feel by changing the way you think.
Many people including businesses are recognising the power of transformation and personal growth by promoting initiatives linked to their own and their staff's well being. Just ask yourself would you like to live a healthier happier and more fulfilled life? Using this form of psychotherapy I have the techniques to treat stress, anxiety, lack of confidence, self worth, relationship issues, depression and addictions.
Consider what would it mean to be able to cope with panic attacks or deal better with the challenges in life, control your weight with a virtual gastric band. Get on top of exam nerves, phobias, stop smoking or get rid of the fear of public speaking. Even the NHS and NICE recognise based on sound research, that hypnotherapy is effective in treating IBS, PTSDand other disorders.
industries. With a string of Nurse training qualifications includingBSc Hons (SCPHN) Specialist Public Health Nursing degree in
Occupational health and most recently training in Solution focused therapy with the Clifton , I have gained a plethora of knowledge in helping individuals, teams and organisations to make positive and lasting changes in their lives.
The solution focused approach I specialise in breaks through mental blocks that impede us on a day to day basis stopping us from being healthy andabove all happy. Consultations are based on one to one sessions for anyone who has an interest in making life changes or working with small, medium or large team supporting a healthy, positive and productive workforce. Remember nothing changes unless something changes.

Celebration for Fr. Clement
On Sunday 13th August, there will be a Mass for Fr. Clement to mark the occasion of his 20years of Priesthood.
The Mass will commence at 11.00am and will be followed with a grand celebration including light refreshments from 12.30pm in the Church Hall.
On Wednesday 5th July, I met with Fr. Clement Orang’o and Tony Monteiro, the chairman of the church celebration committee to talk about his time in the Priesthood and his eight years here in Syston.
Fr. Clement began by asking me to thank everyone he has met inside and outside the church here in Syston for making him feel very welcome and he is very happy to be working here. He said that when he first arrived he was nervous about how he would be received within the community. Being African he anticipated a negative reaction, particularly following in the footsteps of Fr. Anthony, but found quite the opposite.
He has found that every service he has officiated at whether it is a funeral or a baptism people appreciate him and thank him.
Fr. Clement was ordained on 16/8/2003 in the parish of Kisii in Kenya into the Comboni Missionary and he worked in
Fr. Clement showing the new roof
the first time the whole roof has had to be replaced.
He feels privileged to be a part of the church and to have been able to enable the new roof to be put on that will out live us all.
Egypt for two years, Sudan and South Sudan for a further three years. Then Bishop Malcolm invited him to come to Syston to take over from Fr. Anthony. He has a profound need to serve people of the church across the world and found some cultural differences between here and other areas he had been, one was the length of Mass, in Kenya it is two hours whereas here it is an hour. He has a deep interest in all religions and likes to learn about them.
Since being at Syston he has taken part in three sponsored walks to raise funds for the church, the first was in 2016 when he walked 20 miles in Rutland and was joined by some parishioners for part of the way, he raised nearly £10,000 for the retired priest funds. His second and third walks were to raise £3,000/4,000 for roof repairs and then in 2023 he completed another 20 mile walk and helped raise a total of £45k with the aid of the wider community to enable a new roof to be put on the Church in May this year. Fr. Clement was so proud of the result of these fundraisers, he would like to thank everyone who sponsored or donated. He explained that the church was built in 1948 and that it was a straight building, later the wings were added and this is
He welcomes everyone to the sacraments whether they attend regularly or not. He also enjoys the social side of the church being involved with BBQs, Quiz nights, fairs, games and Bingo. During Covid he set up a live streaming from the church to the parishioners to help them through those difficult times, these have been appreciated by all. He wanted to thank his neighbours for being so good and he finished by saying how inspired he is by people’s faith, being strong and dedicated.

Tales from the plot August
August is the month when we start to notice the gradually shortening days. It can also be a humid month, creating ideal conditions for powdery and downy mildew to strike
Courgettes, sweet peas, lettuce and squash are all very susceptible to mildew, along with a number of other crops and fruit trees. If you mix one part milk with two to three parts water and spray liberally, while the science behind this solution isn’t fully understood, I’m told it works rather well, especially on courgettes, melons and cucumbers. It is believed that naturally-occurring compounds in the milk not only combat the disease, but also boost the plant’s immune system. We will see.
Now is the time to tidy up your strawberry bed and replace any plants that are more than three years old with fresh ones; also remove dead leaves to improve airflow around them. There are still quite a few things you should be sowing in August - spring cabbage and chinese cabbage which can be grown as late crops, as well as hardy lettuce. Although we think of lettuce as a summer crop, it is a surprisingly hardy plant and under a cloche or in the greenhouse can easily be available for a Boxing Day salad rather than some tasteless import from sunnier climes. Sow spring onions like White Lisbon which are winter hardy and will grow, albeit slowly, to add zing to that salad along with some fast growing radishes. Your runner beans will be at the top of the canes now so pinch out their growing tip to encourage bushier growth below, pick all runner, climbing and dwarf beans regularly except for
the haricot varieties such as borlotti where we want the bean rather than pod for table.
Stop tomato plants now to encourage fruit to swell and ripen, stopping is the process of cutting off the growing tip so the plant’s energy is not diverted into foliage from fruit. Keep your tomato side shoots in check, you want tomatoes not masses of foliage, ensure they are watered regularly, drying out prevents the plant from taking up sufficient calcium and the deficit causes blossom end rot.
There’s a bountiful harvest to enjoy with a vast range of crops now in season, it’s a real joy to pick sun-warmed produce straight from your plot, giving an unrivalled feeling of satisfaction after months of sweat and toil. Happy growing!

As we have now moved into the warmer part of the year, we would like to remind the community to keep good crime prevention habits.
Ensure your homes are left secured and locked up. Leave your home looking occupied. Look out for your neighbours. For parents/carers who have children ensure you know who they are with, where they are going out and what they are up to.
Warn them about the dangers of water and teach them to stay out of any kinds of water.
Warn them of the dangers of entering unknown property’s such as abandoned buildings, it may look tempting to your children but there are several health and safety risks and dangers of entering these types of derelict buildings.

Farewell
A special service was held on Sunday 23rd June, not only to celebrate St Peter & St Paul’s Day (whose usual festive day is 29th June) but also the final service conducted by Reverend Biddy Saunders who has been working in Syston Parish for nine years.
At the end of the service the Associate Minister Sue Essex presented Biddy with a Syston White Plum tree and an envelope of donations from the church PCC and members of the congregation.
Biddy’s delight at the tree was obvious!
Following the service the congregation and other guests met in the church hall for a special celebratory lunch. More gifts were donated and speeches made. It was a wonderful occasion of fellowship.

There is plenty of space in the church to look around at the architecture and installations going back centuries and there's always a knowledgeable person on hand to answer questions.

The speaker, Rosemary Pike from Nottinghamshire gave her talk on ‘The Magic of Stained Glass’.
From Egyptian and Greek times, glass was discovered in volcanoes and photographs of museum items were passed around for members to see, and to hold small pieces of glass and nuggets, which could then be melted to be reformed. Clear glass was able to be coloured, using oxides and elements (e.g. cobalt, copper). Nowadays, Rosemary

From Potatoes to Plant to Share
The children in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at The Merton Primary School have been busily homing their green fingers this Spring and Summer.
During the Spring the children planted potatoes after exploring the story Oliver’s Vegetables byVivian French. The children successfully harvested a great crop and enjoyed homemade chips to celebrate their efforts. They have been planting a variety flowers, vegetables and herbs which they have shared with the school community as part of the Soil Association campaign ‘Plant to Share’. They have nurtured a vegetable patch in the school garden in which they are currently growing; courgette, pumpkins, carrots, beetroot, peppers, corn, cabbage, lettuce and much more.

ARIES March 21 - April 19
This is not a good month for Arians with any kind of healthy ego! For others will challenge you and present obstacles and make it just so difficult to get your own way and work towards what you really want. Time spent on a new hobby with a special someone will take on a romantic note; just what you need to unwind and relax.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
Your attention turns to more emotional matters and it really is time to set your sights on what you really want. With Jupiter in your sign, you’re most likely to succeed at this right now. Business ideas are particularly likely to get off the ground. And with Uranus – the ‘clever’ planet in your sign – you’ll turn into a creative genius!
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
Changes to the daily routine are much to your liking with the pleasing presence of Venus helping you, also bringing warm happy company and more than a smattering of romance! Ideas are flowing and will certainly distract you quite positively even though you’ll feel at times as if you’ve escaped into your own dream world! Why not?
CANCER June 21 - July 22
A new way of making money will certainly appeal to you and a loved one may be joining in to help! You have to assert yourself when it comes to the daily routine and you learn that good communication is the key. Relationship decisions are due.
LEO July 23 - August 22
The new moon in your sign this month brings in an era of ‘putting yourself first’ and this includes that special romantic someone in your life! You spend cash on uplifting things, whether forking out on a holiday or treating yourself to healthy spa days – whatever makes you feel good. Some connections finally move on.
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22
You need to communicate your great new ideas this month if ever you want to achieve results and you so want to get things done. You spend cash on all this and feel quite excited by the results. Both work related topics and your close personal relationships are all up for a review; you use your instincts but it’s hard work too.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
Worries on your mind are expressed to others in practical ways as the month goes on and only by doing so can you hope to make find solutions and make progress. Both your work and hobbies suffer as you pursue and explore some great new social contacts, especially a promising new love affair which reaps rewards.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22
Changes in your home life impact positively on your hobbies and interests! Basically, it’s ‘out with the old’ and so then there much more space –and time – for all those things that you enjoy doing the most. Still, you discover that even having fun takes a good deal of hard work and imagination. Time to plan a holiday...
SAGITTARIUSNov 23 - Dec 21
Having completed one or two projects just lately, changes are bound to take place when it comes to your routine. The home front too benefits from the extra time that you can spend there as a result. New ideas at work can now be put into action and material profits are most likely to occur. Well done you!
CAPRICORNDec 22 - Jan 19
Your thoughts have been largely all about how you can secure your current position and not lose one iota of clout. However, life is all about change and things move on whether you’re ‘ready or not’. Take time to reassess your financial position for starters and then some hard work is required to follow your dreams.
AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 18
You reach the completion of a personal phase in your life this month. Your finances too will undergo a deep transformation! All this does involve some honest thought and application –which is basically quite hard work. You also need stamina too as your whole life swings round to something rather more to your liking.
PISCESFeb 19 - March 20
You’ve more staying power than most folk this month with Saturn in your sign, giving you a distinct advantage when it comes to getting things done. Yes, ‘hard work’ is something that you do believe in and yet it’s your intuition that really saves the day. A new job proposition is just perfect and brightens up your day.

Community Support Service Groups to Be Showcased at Summer Fayre in ‘Help Is at Hand!’ Pavilion
The annual Syston Summer Fayre to be held this year on Central Park on Saturday 2nd September, offers community support organisations an annual opportunity to publicise their services, extend their client base, recruit members, attract volunteer support and raise much-needed funds. This year, many of them will, as usual, organise their independent displays. With the benefit of a subsidy from the Volunteer Centre, others - many of them participating for the first time - will showcase themselves in a special ‘Help is at Hand!’ Pavilion organised by the Centre.
Syston and neighbouring communities are exceptionally well-served by the number of currently active support groups. In an ongoing survey, Syston and District Volunteer Centre has already identified over 150 such organisations, many of them led by volunteers, offering social, cultural, sporting, educational, financial, medical, health and emotional support to those in need and enhancing the
quality of life for people of all ages. Many of these groups operate ‘under the radar’ with a great deal of work being put in by small but dedicated groups of volunteers. As a result, too many local residents ‘suffer in silence’, experiencing great inconvenience, distress and loneliness simply through ignorance of what support is available locally.
Centre Trustee, Colin Grimes, says: “The Volunteer Centre has a proud record of matching local needs with local support services. Through this event, we are pleased to offer financial and organisational support to deserving community groups. To complement those organisations with a presence at the Fayre, the Centre has also launched an on-line Directory of Community Support Services Organisations (www.syston-vc.org/ directory) which offers a ‘one-stop’ guide to what is available and clearly demonstrates that, whatever the individual need might be, there is likely to be a local solution. Printed copies of the Directory will be made available from the Volunteer Centre’s own stand.”
Volunteer, me? Why?
Having retired and still feeling fit and alive, I decided to visit the Syston Volunteer Centre and see if they wanted me to become a driver. There were no awkward questions, no interview but Yes Please! Twelve months later on just one day a week, I
am increasing my knowledge of traffic and roads around the city, driving around the local area to pick up clients and meeting some lovely people who administer the wonderful service provided by the charity and keep it running. I have been able to practise my driving skills without pressure and learn more patience, slowing my speed and my life style.
As to the clients I transport – well they are lovely humans and thankful for seeing a smiley, friendly face and receiving a door-to-door service.
I occasionally escort clients to their appointment through NHS corridors if their family are still working and unavailable or do not live nearby, they are very grateful for our assistance. It makes one feel good inside as you know you are helping people who are less fortunate than yourself and makes you grateful for your own life.
The volunteer centre also allows me to drive a minibus when required. Wow! What fun!
However, the Syston Volunteer Centre needs more drivers to ease the pressure on others.
It needs more drivers to provide a better and more efficient service. So, come on, pop into the centre in School Street and talk to Andy.
Oh, you can use your own car and you are re-imbursed for the mileage you drive.

Riverside Utd JFC Presentation Night
Riverside are always in the lookout for local businesses to get involved by way of sponsorship. With new teams forming regularly each season it’s a great way for businesses to get themselves noticed all over Leicestershire as shirt sponsors whilst helping the local communities to which they belong. If your business would be willing to sponsor a team, in whatever way kits or equipment, please do get in touch through our website riversideutdjfc.com. We look forward to you help us help out local communities.
24th June 2023 marked the annual awards celebration of Riverside Utd JFC sponsored by Syston Doors. The event was held at Syston RFC, and although the venue was a rugby club, it was very much about the football achievements of all the players and coaches involved in this fantastic local club. The site boasted a huge 400 seat marquee, with stage, professional sound and lighting set-up, inflatables and plenty of food and drink options to cater for all. It really was a day to remember for all involved at Riverside!!
Riverside Utd JFC is a Syston based junior charity football club with its home ground being Wreake Valley academy. The football club provides a safe and friendly environment for children of all ages and abilities to learn and enjoy, through its F.A accredited coaches, how to play football. It has upwards of 500 subscribed members of ages between four up to 17, spanning across the communities of Syston and its surrounding villages and can also boast its newly formed all girls team.

Only the Father’s Day display last month, and the summer theme this month for me to do. It’s been lovely to see the Chapel being used especially at the weekend for quiet reflection, it’s so very peaceful. Don’t forget the Chapel is available to hire - please contact Catherine Voyce on 0116 260 7150 at Syston Town Council for further information. Also, if you wish to purchase a standard rose in memory of a loved one, again contact Catherine at Syston Town Council to arrange it, a small plaque can be purchased to dedicate the Rose.
Hello everyone – Phew what a hot few weeks we have had. The poor flowers aren’t surviving very long and I’m constantly filling my bags with the dead flowers and plants. I try to water fresh flowers when I go in the evenings for you, to help them last a little longer. Having said that the hanging baskets and flower tubs and the beds look fantastic, this is because the hanging baskets and tubs are selfwatering, a credit to Syston Town Council. Thank you.
Take care everyone enjoy the lovely weather. Ros

Cllr Andrew Brown JP outlined his lifeas a farmerand his year as High Sheriffof RutlandtoBarkby and Beeby WI. He explained the originsof representing the monarch through this rolefrom circa 1440. The checked table brought aboutthe term 'exchequer' and the clearing of the vergesbecame the 'verger'. The 18thcentury uniform is the same as 'Black Rod' and the arms of the sheriff were the two swords mentioned at the recent Coronation. Vicki Green, Secretary.

Wanlip Sailing Club Welcomes VIP Visitor
took Sara out on a safety boat so she could enjoy our beautiful location and wildlife and see the size of our water, which is just 10 acres and would fit into Whitwell Bay at Rutland. We then served up scones, jam and cream with various drinks on offer, giving Sara the opportunity to chat with numerous members, sailors and paddle boarders, on a wide range of subjects.
“We’re probably one of the smallest clubs in the Midlands, and we talked about how we could attract youngsters to sailing and encourage some of our older members to return following the pandemic.
Those challenges have raised a total of over £30,000 and made a massive difference to so many deserving families but that being said, there’s always been a feeling of unfinished business, one last itch so to speak.
Many of you will know I turned 50 a few months ago and my aim is to try and raise £20,000 to take my fundraising to £50,000
so this is it…..The final curtain, the last hurrah, my final challenge - and this one is the biggest yet!
Wanlip Sailing Club was pleased to welcome a VIP visitor as part of Midlands tour by the chief executive of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), Sara Sutcliffe MBE.
Exploring the successes and challenges experienced by different clubs, Sara also visited Notts County SC and Rutland SC (20-21 June 2023), coinciding with the launch of the RYA’sTogether on Watervision for the future of sailing and boating.
The visit to Wanlip SC in Leicestershire enabled Sara to find out more about one of the region’s smallest clubs, along with her colleagues,Ben Hodgson, RYA MidlandsRegional Development Officer, andJudy Lambourne, RYA Midlands Regional Volunteer Team Chair.
Commodore Richard Harris said: “We
“Sara was able to tell us about the new RYA Together on Water strategy and how that may help us to reach out to new members. It was a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon and really informative.”
Wanlip SC is an inclusive family-friendly club offering paddleboarding, social sailing and racing, with regular events and a newly refurbished clubhouse. For further information visit: www.wanlipsc. co.uk or discover more about how to start boating at: www.rya.org.uk/startboating

So as most of you know, over the last couple of years, I’ve taken on one or two challenges to raise some money for a charity that has become very close to my heart!
The aim is to ride 700 miles in 7 days covering Leicestershire, the hills of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, the wind and coasts of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and also Rutland! A massive ask but I’m determined to do it and raise as much money as I can for these amazing children who deserve so much more!
As always, your support is very much appreciated by menphys and myself. If you would like to donate through JustGiving it is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Town C.C and the Miracle at Potters Lane
Those people who were at Syston’s ground on 24th June will never forget what they were fortunate enough to witness. Leicester Caribbean were the visitors and the 2nd XI did well to dismiss them for 125 with Abrar Pathan bowling superbly to take 529. Syston’s innings never really got off the ground and they quickly slumped to 30-9 and all seemed lost.
other ideas. They batted correctly and very sensibly and amid scenes of great excitement they put on an unbeaten stand of 97 to win the game. It really was a cricketing miracle the like of which I’ve never seen before nor am likely to see again. Dharmist finished on 53 not out and Joe on 22 not out.
The team also pulled a game out of the fire the previous week with another single wicket victory. A good all round bowling performance saw league leaders Maher Stars dismissed for 143 and despite 52 from Chirag Modi it took last man Joe to steal a quick single off the penultimate ball of the match to win the game. The seconds are on quite a roll and they followed these narrow victories with a comfortable win away at YMA. After bowling out the home side for 169 they knocked off the runs with only three wickets down. Faisal Jariwala was man of the match with four wickets and an unbeaten seventy.
The 1st XI are finding the going tough in the Premier Division having only won one match so far and currently lie second to bottom. Syston’s bowlers are generally doing their job but the batting lacks consistency. The problem was highlighted in the match at Cropston. The home side were bowled out for 177 and with Syston
on 176-7 victory seemed assured. However not another run was scored and defeat was a bitter pill to swallow after dominating the majority of the game.
The Sirens have now finished their league season and what a splendid year they’ve had with six victories out of seven matches. They wait to see if they will qualify for the end of season play-offs. The Sunday XI lost to Rothley but the bright spot of the match was the two wickets taken by Ben Tebbutt. In doing so he became the first player to take 100 career wickets for the team. Syston won a nail biter against Leicester University Staff. Batting first Syston set a target of 174 with Tuschar Prafulchandra making 56 and Yash Patel 71 and then they bowled well to restrict LUS to 172-8 and victory by just two runs.
