Charity Auction for SKBs Kylie Topper
Future Dreams have a special connection with Kylie as the founder of the charity and Kylie were both diagnosed in the same month fifteen years ago. They have been overwhelmed by the story and they are working in conjunction with BBC Radio Leicester and ourselves here at the Stn to raise as much money as possible through this online auction hosted by the charity itself.
SKB said: “Knitting my toppers was originally to just bring a smile to people’s faces but sometimes I have been able to raise awareness of a charity that was important to a member of my local community.
Kylie Minogue meets SKBs post box topper of herself in the Padam Padam outfit which adorned the post box on High Street until Friday 15th September, when your editor took it into Radio Leicester and gave Ady Dayman of BBC Radio Leicester a challenge to get it to Kylie herself while she was at the BBC Radio 2 party in the park over the weekend of 16th and 17th September.
It took a lot of organising by the team at BBC Radio Leicester but on Sunday, Ady finally completed the challenge and got it to Kylie, whom you can see in the photograph above, Kylie was thrilled to have been celebrated by SKB and she asked her to auction the topper off in aid of Future Dreams, a breast cancer charity.

Sam Jacobs, CEO from Future Dreams said: “Nobody should face breast cancer alone. Future Dreams Breast Cancer Charity provides practical, emotional and psychological support for those diagnosed with breast cancer, funds vital secondary breast cancer research and promotes breast health awareness. In 2021 the charity opened Future Dreams House, the only dedicated breast cancer support centre in the UK offering in-person and virtual

2023 Rainbows Classic Car Run
9th Annual Classic Car Run for Rainbow’s Children’s Hospice.
The run began, thanks to the generosity of the owners of Stonehurst Family Farm, early on Sunday morning the 3rd of September. 60 cars had registered to take part and 56 were able to make the start. As usual the owners of the cars took the opportunity to look at the cars gathered in the car park, enjoy a hot drink and a delicious bacon bap while they waited to register and receive their Tulip diagram book showing them the route which would explore the little lanes of Leicestershire and Rutland. The midway stop was at Wymondham Windmill where, once again, the owners allowed us to gather at this popular venue. It has a small assortment of shops, including a dress agency. There is also a restaurant where the participants were able to top up on their refreshments. Several people took the opportunity to climb up inside the mill.
The final destination was at Barnsdale Gardens where the cars gathered in a field designed as an overspill car park. Some people had brought their own picnic others took the opportunity of dining in the restaurant. Should they wish to they were able to enjoy the gardens at a slightly reduced cost.
Overall, a really enjoyable day with
an outstanding result raising £1500! In combination with what they have raised previously they will be donating a total of £2000 for the year.

Tales from the plot for October
away. Only store perfect fruit, any that are blemished will simply rot and infect the others stored.
Broad beans: you can now sow seeds of early varieties, they should overwinter and give you a crop in the following June, this works for some but not for me, I’ll delay planting mine until February.
This is the month when it feels as if the year is starting to turn, the days are noticeably shorter, the sun is lower in the sky and temperatures are dropping. Leaves are changing colour and beginning to fall and you are likely to get the first early frosts. At this time of year most of the work is primarily about clearing away and composting the remains of the summers harvest, however do keep hoeing!
I try to remove all dead foliage and old, dying plants and add them all to the compost. Clear away all bean poles, canes and plant supports and use weed suppressant membrane (for allotment holders this must be water permeable) to cover areas, this keeps weed growth at bay and allows you to sow earlier next spring.
As far as the potatoes are concerned the old way is to lift them and leave the crop to dry in the sun. This 'curing' hardens the skins, and the tougher the skins the longer they will store. I normally just leave mine in and take them as I want them, yes some potatoes that are near the top do get frosted but it’s normally very few - you can now lift carrots and other root vegetables where possible and store.
Earth up leeks and celery to keep the stems blanched, use cloches to cover and protect any late sown crops, especially salad crops, continue picking apples and pears and cook or eat any that are damaged straight
Cabbages - last chance this year for transplanting spring cabbages, plant them in ground that has been well firmed and cover with nets to protect from birds, especially pigeons. You can now plant garlic cloves; as long as they are not in a waterlogged area they will overwinter, the longer they are in the ground, the bigger next year’s bulbs will be for harvesting…. hopefully.
Rhubarb should be entering the dormant period from now until March, so now is the best time to plant new sets or divide and replant old crowns. Plant new, bare root bushes this month allowing them time through autumn to get their roots down before start of next growing season.

‘Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without one!’
Film Reviews by Matt Hill
Gran Turismo
Champagne’s only for the podium Story
Jann (Archie Madekwe) is an avid gamer, who’s given the chance to be a professional racer after winning a video game contest.
Thoughts
Video game based movies don’t really have the best TRACK record (sorry, I couldn’t help it). Yet 2023 is proving to be an exception to that rule.
With HBO’s stellar The Last of Us series, and The Super Mario Movie still sitting pretty as this year's highest grossing movie worldwide, are we finally starting to see a shift? The thing is Gran Turismo isn’t exactly a video game movie, but rather a movie based on the true story about the sim racers’ competition, which selected the fastest racers to join the GT academy, and attempt to develop them into professional racers.
Much like the tortoise in the race, the movie's first 20 minutes feel a little sluggish. Overhammering the ‘stop gaming and get a real job’ message, whilst worryingly giving the impression you just might have brought a ticket for a feature long game advert. Thankfully once Jann enters the GT academy, and meets tough trainer Jack Salter
(Harbour), the movie starts to shift gears and find its footing.
Salter's relationship with Jann is where the movie’s heart comes from, and it’s enjoyable to watch the pair push each other on this journey.
As good as their dynamic may be, the real star of the show is the racing sequences. They’re magnetic. Each shot with such ferocity and energy, that you can’t help but get swept up in the high speed action.
In a nutshell
Gran Turismo is a solid sports’ movie, one that hits all the beats it needs to. Yet the electrifying race scenes and warm bond between Jann and Salter elevate it to something worth seeing.
Elemental Feeling the Elements
The Story
In a city where all four elements (Earth, air, water and fire) coexist, but don’t mix. A fire element named Ember (Lewis) and water element Wade (Athie) will find out if things might be better if they did.
Wade (Athie) will find out if things might be better if they did.
Thoughts
Elemental marks Pixar’s 27th feature film release since they unleashed their first animated movie, Toy Story back in 1995. Since then the studio has become a
hallmark of top quality animated movies, but in recent years their films’ seem to be falling short of that exceedingly high standard.
So does Elemental sizzle? Or is it an extinguished flame on arrival?
This’ll probably come as a surprise to no one, but the animation and details of the world are second to none. It’s bright, vibrant and full of quirks to suit every element. Whether that’s how they use a train for a daily commute, or just simply eat, all of it is meticulously thought out. Our guide through this world is a fire element named Ember, who’s helping run her fathers shop, whilst dealing with her own anger issues.
Soon she meets a water element named Wade, and they team up to find the mysterious water leak that's been finding its way into fire town. On that journey they’ll begin to ignite the ‘will they won’t they’ romantic spark.
The best parts of the film comes from Ember and Wade’s lovable relationship. In how they each interact with Pixar’s fully realized world around them, allowing the film to deliver the Pixar feels and laughs we’re all so used to. The problems start to bubble when the story detracts from their romance, by pulling focus to other plot lines.
Making the film feel overstuffed and unsure about what it story it really wants to focus on.
In a Nutshell
Pixar’s first rom-com is, for the most part, a blazing success. It may not be one of their best, but it’s still a very sweet and gorgeous animation in its own right.

Grow Give Live
Grow Give Live were at the Syston Summer Fayre on 2nd September; what a fantastic community event it was, thank you to the organisers who worked so hard to make it happen.
It was lovely to meet people at our stall who have been making the most of the produce coming from the community centre planters; there have been plenty of tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, strawberries and cucumbers, as well as the odd aubergine and squash. As we go into autumn, there’s lots of harvesting still to be done – the
Syston Scouts enjoyed seeing the fruits of their labour when we helped them dig up the potatoes we’d planted before the summer – we hear some were turned into homemade chips – yummy! As well as the produce we’ve planted, there is plenty of fruit in the hedgerows and on trees at this time of year. Syston station has a beautiful Syston plum tree, which made a delicious crumble, and of course, there are loads of blackberries to forage if you can get there before the birds! Only take what you need, wash before eating, and enjoy.
While the planters might be looking a little quieter over the next few months, Grow Give Live won’t be! We have lots of projects in the
pipeline to do more growing around the town, as well as continuing to work towards the long term goal of a permanent community garden space for the whole community to access and enjoy.
Autumn and winter are seasons where nature takes a rest, to recuperate and gather energy for the flush of spring. While we can’t stop completely, there is something to be said for taking a lesson from nature and letting ourselves slow down; think about ways you can nurture yourself through the winter months, so you’re ready to burst into the spring full of life!
Please keep in touch with our progress by following us on Facebook, just search for Grow Give Live. You can also contact us by email on growgivelivesyston@gmail. com.

Vandalism at Syston Station
sponsors we are appalled and disgusted by this behaviour and would appreciate if anyone saw those responsible for this unnecessary damage to report it to Syston Police via 101.
NEW BARKBY WI
The pictures above and below show the vandalism and rubbish that is not only disgusting but it has cost us, the Station Adopters who are all volunteers, an award for the best kept station. This wonderful team of volunteers work hard all year for the benefit of the community and this is how they reward our efforts!
The rubbish is not consistent with normal railway travellers, it consisted of beer bottles, beer cans, food cartons and a coat. There are four litter bins which were all full and they are emptied twice a week by network rail and the station volunteer adopters. On a Sunday we have had human excrement left by our tool shed and the latest a dead rat! As one of the station adopters
President Shirley Franklin welcomed members and visitors to New Barkby W.I’s September meeting. Jerusalem was sung followed by business matters. The speaker for the evening was the welcome return of Carolyn Boulter from Barwell and Patchwork for pleasure.
This was a hands-on session to create little owls from material, to be used as paperweights. Carolyn provided everyone with a kit for the task and with her expertise and patience, helped each person to produce an owl in a variety of coloured fabrics with circles for the base and eyes. (The eyes also had buttons which needed to be sewn on to each circle). The owls were stuffed with bags of rice for balancing. At the end of the session there were lots of owls adorning the tables after they were completed.
There was also a display of Carolyn’s patchwork items for members to peruse or to make a purchase if so wished.
The vote of thanks was given by Valerie Cobb and the competition of a handmade fabric item was won by Jean Brutnall, with a cover she had made for a stool.
The raffle prize was won by Carole Hughes who also served refreshments with additional help from other members.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 4th October at Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm, when there will be talk on ‘Shellcraft from the Philippines’.
Visitors are always welcome to attend.

A great result for everyone involved. We look forward to a continuing close partnership with Queniborough Primary School in the future.
In the Autumn of 2022 an approach was made to Queniborough Primary School by our Club President Fiona Pimm to see if there were any ways in which we could develop a supportive relationship with the school and our Rotary Club. Initial discussions identified a need for the school to replace a number of rather tired and worn out children's dictionaries.
The Rotary Organisation has just such a scheme that can provide suitable dictionaries to schools in the UK and in many other countries around theworld.
It was agreed that we would supply enough dictionaries for one suitably aged year group and present them to the school at the end of this school

Age Concern Syston is a self-funding charity providing many benefits for local older people. Help and advice is always readily available when needed, and there are weekly coffee mornings held at the Methodist Church Hall on Wednesdays from 10.00 to 11.30am. Also trips out on the minibus are organised to various places of interest.
Throughout August and September, entertainment at the coffee mornings has included music from the 40s to 70s by vocalist Kerry Jean with everyone enjoying singing along, a display of Irish dancing by Faith Dixon, a food tasting session provided by ICare Meals on Wheels, musical entertainment by Eileen and Keith from the Little Big Band and a painting demonstration by a local artist. Trips out have included pub lunches, a cruise on the River Trent and a ride on the Great Central Railway.
The continued efforts of the staff and volunteers are very much appreciated by all the members.
The main fundraising effort this year is the Christmas Fayre to be held on Saturday 11th November from 10.00am to 2.00pm at the Syston Methodist Church Hall. Hopefully, this will be very well supported in order to raise much needed funds.

It’s time for our next production! “Oh no, it isn’t!” “Oh yes, it is!” And this time we’ll be dishing up pudding and panto as we take on a double bill of well-loved British playwright David Tristram’s cracking short comedies. For our first helping of entertainment, tuck into ‘What’s for Pudding?’. It’s that time of the year again and Mary’s bored. She’s bloody bored. Jack never does anything interesting, or thoughtful. And he’s forgotten again, hasn’t he? Mary and Jack's boringly dull Saturday evening is interrupted by the arrival of friends Maureen and Ted who have tickets for the dance next Friday. The evening then quickly becomes anything but boring as the drink flows (literally) and Mary, Jack, Maureen and Ted get on the wrong side of a bottle of whisky. Their antics are witnessed by a bemused Dennis, who only turned up to order a pair of brown flared trousers from Mary's catalogue but ends up with a lot more than he bargained for. And he’s not the only one. Mary may just end up eating her words! We’re back in Little Grimley for our second serving of festive fun in ‘Last Panto in Little Grimley’. Gordon’s written another script to get audiences flocking to the amateur dramatic society’s next production. He’s penned a panto with a storyline that expands as far as their dwindling budget, lighting and acting ability. And the panto has a twist. “What sort of twist?”, I hear you cry. It’s the sort of twist that will have you falling about with laughter, like many of the characters. With slip-ups, knockouts and patch-ups at least the snide, sarcastic, crossfire between Bernard and Margaret is wellaimed. If only Joyce could spell it. “Break a leg everyone!”
Rehearsals are in full swing, and we’re delighted to bring two new faces to the stage since our last show: Cathy
Rackstraw and Matt Ormerod, as well as welcome back a firm audience favourite Ron Berry. So, we’ve got a great cast and crew line-up ready to serve up our next performance:
Cast – ‘What’s for Pudding’
Jack – Jules Richards
Mary – Cathy Rackstraw
Maureen – Gill Bowler
Ted – Matt Ormerod
Dennis – Toby Garner
Cast – ‘Last Panto in Little Grimley’
Joyce – Jo Gallagher
Gordon – Ron Berry
Margaret – Kat Seddon
Bernard – Jules Richards
Crew Director – Jude Latham
Assistant Director – Kat Seddon
Production Manager – Louise Knowles
Technical – Spike Chapman
Continuity – Margaret Young
Front of House – Lesley Smith

ARIES March 21 - April 19
A partner is busy this month with one thing or another! You'll have challenges keeping up with them although they provide endless fascination. They also offer you some good guidance and even inspiration. So it can't be bad. Both your social and home life allow for a large amount of emotional expression and fulfilment.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
With both Jupiter and Uranus in your sign, you can't go wrong! For all good things will gravitate towards you. Jupiter inspires business and social interaction – and even some travel is well-aspected this month. Uranus brings out the genius in you. You use your unique talents at work this month with astounding results.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
You'll feel emotional about your finances this month and will need to prioritise these before you move onto anything else. Still, life is pretty good with an interested admirer heading your way. Luckily some wonderful ideas come to mind and start to guide your life in a better direction. There's some hard work involved but worth it.
CANCER June 21 - July 22
A little bit of what you fancy really will do you good! So do follow your fancies and your whims. You'll enjoy being spoilt by a romantic someone special who splashes out on you in style. Spending time at home does much to replenish your batteries although you're tempted to work around house and garden. Good for you.
LEO July 23 - August 22
You'll enjoy this month immensely, being able to go for just what you want and that includes 'heading for love'! Short journeys are necessary but you have more than enough energy and drive to deal with what you really have to. Long term friends provide the stability and support that – deep down – you really need right now.
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22
Your finances are set for a wonderful boost this month as the Sun and Mars move through this area of your chart. However you still have to really apply your mind to this matter and also open discussions with those who can make a difference. With romance also on your mind, it looks like an intense month for you.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
You're feeling wonderful – on top of the world – with the Sun and Mars in your sign. Mercury too encourages you to communicate and open up a little more. Close friends come up with a great business idea that has more than a stroke of genius about it. Work is demanding but you apply your creativity with success.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22
With some great new dreams on your mind and the mental drive to make them happen, you'll be pushing off in a new direction this month! This may involve work changes and fresh opportunities beckon. Changes to your daily routine continue and these are transforming your life quite considerably - all for the best.
SAGITTARIUSNov 23 - Dec 21
Your social life is buzzing as you enjoy receiving invites here and there! Such fun too. Your finances are being utilised to really make things happen and you can move mountains right now. Hurrah. You catch up with an old face from the past and this may be emotional but so good to hear all the news.
CAPRICORNDec 22 - Jan 19
A partner is emotional and this makes you feel much the same way! So it's important to stand back and to keep things in perspective. Your career goes well as you're fairly inspired to get up and get out there and make things happen. All communications are going so well. A quiet romance gets off the ground.
AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 18
You're having to work hard for your cash these days and yet are enjoying the creative freedom that you're being pushed to explore. Yes, your imagination is working well for you and this affects your finances positively in particular. Study or working from home all go so well this month and bring results.
PISCESFeb 19 - March 20
Your tenacity and stamina are fabulous with the earthy planet of Saturn moving through your sign. The results are pretty impressive and others wonder how on earth you're doing it! Neptune in your sign gives you the edge when it comes to intuition and feeling your way forward in life. You're coming into your own.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News
A very special few days for your Parish Church!
It began on Thursday 7th September with an uplifting service of welcome and commitment to shared Ministry in the parishes of Syston and East Goscote for Reverend Rosalind (Ros) Harper. The service, held at St. Hilda’s Church, East Goscote, was conducted by Bishop Saju Muthalaly. Despite the intense heat the church was packed and a truly joyful service was enjoyed.
items to include, a generous offer of the loan of amazing memorabilia from the Dambusters era to view in our World War 2 area under the tower.
Ride and Stride
Meanwhile in amongst all this excitement the annual Ride and Stride event took place on Saturday! The partakers were able to enjoy the church exhibition when they came to sign in and enjoy a moment of coolness, and have some refreshment if they wished. Our own cyclists Dave and Theresa Morgan rode round many of the local, but more remote, churches despite the great heat! Young Christian Adair and Ben Morgan rode round later in the afternoon. It is hoped a that we will have raised just over £200. The money raised will go the Historic Churches Trust.
Wordsearch Winners
Ros was presented with signs of Christian ministry, and during one of the hymns she was personally welcomed by representatives of the church and community.A convivial time followed as refreshments were enjoyed.
Heritage Open Day
Each window was decorated with a fascinating display of extraordinary wedding hats and memorabilia created over quite some time by Janet Burgin.
Sue and John had installed part of their history exhibition on mobile boards and these had a lot of interest across the weekend, as did the albums of weddings and scrap books carefully curated by Felicity.
In the afternoon we set up our tables with bone china and, with the urn bubbling and team in place, we took on the might of our last summer cream tea. Lashings of cream and jam scones washed down with copious cups of tea. Fewer pew picnics were taken and the trail outside was sadly lacking in visitors due to the blistering heat. This was not a problem in the cool of the church!
We had a very special guest during the afternoon, Rev. Ros Harper, our very new Priest, only two days into her new job joined in with the cream teas.
On Saturday 9th September our wordsearch winners received their prizes courtesy of TESCO Syston. Our two pictures show our winners, Romeo, Abigail and Abbigail with Joe from Tesco who presented the winners with their prizes. Thank you to Joe and TESCO Syston for your continued support of our wordsearch competition, it is greatly appreciated.
The days continued with our very first Heritage open day on Saturday 9th September. The event was a great success coordinated by a great group of volunteers led by Wendy Hardy, Theresa Morgan and Sue Essex. The spectacular 100 years of Weddings exhibition was expertly put together by our own Felicity Austin, tirelessly labouring over details. Many generous people had loaned their beautiful wedding dresses, bridesmaid’s dresses and other pieces of memorabilia. Wonderful people popped up with
On Sunday 10th the congregations of St Hilda’s Church, East Goscote, and the people of Syston in St Peter and St Paul’s Church Syston joined together as Reverend Ros was to celebrate the Communion Service for the first time in Syston. A full church worshipped together with great joy, singing enthusiastically some lively hymns.
After the service the refreshments were in church and Ros was able to meet members of both congregations.
In the afternoon Matthew, our organist, played some wonderful wedding related music, and more tea and scones were happily consumed! We are hoping to have raised close to £300, pushing us ever closer to our goal of a toilet and servery in the church. Thank you to everyone who supported the event.

Syston Summer Fayre - What a success!
On Saturday 2nd September the third annual Summer Fayre organised by the community group Syston Summer Fayre came to life after a year of planning and the beautiful weather was the icing on the top! Although we were short of volunteers this year, those we did have worked very hard and well to make everything run smoothly for everyone. The entertainment began early at 11.45 due to the number of performers that wanted to showcase their talents.
We were honoured to have the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Col Murray Colville, the mayor of Charnwood Cllr Margaret Smidowicz and the Chairman of Syston Town Council Cllr Mark Cherry present to officially open the fayre and they walk round accompanied by Chairperson Fiona Henry, meeting many stall holders. They presented Anne Bodycott with a birthday bouquet as she was working hard on the scouts food stall all day, the scouts also made her a birthday cake. The committee would like to thank everyone who attended, all the stall holders, fair ground, food stalls and the entertainers which we would love to list but hopefully the pictures will speak for us! They would also like to thank all our sponsors, without whom we couldn’t have done itMillington’s Travel, MSD for the main
stage, Syston Town News, CSBG Novotel and T. Watts.
The Summer Fayre committee hope you all had a great day and look forward to seeing you next year!!

Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery
Hello everyone. I hope you all had a lovely summer. I am now into the cycle of busy times for displays; Autumn and Harvest Festival, Remembrance Day, St. Andrew’s Day and Christmas. This means quick changes again.
We have the following information for you about the cemetery.
1. There will be a book of remembrance placed in the chapel, where you can leave your special words in memory of a loved one.
2. There are now three designated areas for the scattering of ashes, with one available to include plaques.
3. We're going to try a new initiative. Would anyone like to adopt the fountain, plant it with flowers and care for it in memory of a loved one? The adoption would be initially for a six month period.
If you are interested or would like further information on any of the three items above please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150. Take care everyone, Ros.

Syston Home Care Agency Is One of the Top 20 Home Care Providers in East Midlands
Vintage Social Care has won an award for being one of the Top 20 home care providers in the East Midlands.
There are 1,079 home care providers in the East Midlands and 11,856 home care providers in the UK.
The top 20 home care providers in the East Midlands received the award from the leading reviews site for home care, www.homecare.co.uk, which hosts the Top 20 awards to help people find care that is right for their needs, budget and location. Nearly a million disabled and older people receive care at home so they can stay living independently in their own homes. This includes help with getting dressed, washed, preparing meals and drinks and administering medication.
With an ageing population, the number of people receiving home
care is set to increase. The award is based on the home care provider’s reviews from the people they care for, plus their friends and relatives.
To look for a home care agency in Leicester go to: https://www. homecare.co.uk/homecare/listings. cfm/searchtown/Leicester
Amanda Hopkins, reviews manager of homecare.co.uk, said:
“Top quality home care is vital as it enables people to continue living in their own homes and to keep their independence. People who are less mobile due to illness, a disability or age can become hidden from society so their home care worker can play a crucial role in keeping them both mentally and physically well. Our reviews are by those who receive home care as well as their family and friends. This helps others to search for the right care provider, where compassion, trust and empathy are at the heart of their care. Vintage Social Care has shown it provides care of the highest quality and we would like to congratulate it on being one of the top home care providers in the East Midlands!”
Leanne Smith, Director and Care Manager at Vintage Social Care, said:
“On behalf of everyone at Vintage,
we would like to thank everyone for the reviews which got us this award. We are overjoyed and never thought being such a young business, that this would even happen. We couldn't have done this without our amazing team supporting us, or all of our lovely service users.Vintage began this business venture to bring back the old fashioned morals and values (hence the name), we wanted a more relaxed service for our clients, and for our staff to go the extra mile. We also look after our staff very well, as we believe if we have happy staff, we will have happy clients. It seems we are doing it right!”

Citizens Advice Charnwood says if you suspect that you have been wrongly charged for energy it is important to check it out. It is possible your supplier has made a mistake or your meter is faulty.
Contact your supplier and give them an up-to-date meter reading so they can check exactly how much energy you have used. Ask for a statement so you can see what you have been charged for and when. If suppliers don’t get regular meter readings, they will estimate how much energy you have used and this could result in you being charged too much. If the cost of your gas and electricity has risen your supplier should have given you fair warning. If you’re on a fixed-rate tariff, they can’t increase your prices for the time it is fixed.
You are still responsible for the gas and electricity you are using even if you haven’t had a bill. If you haven’t received a bill for some time contact your supplier. However, if you haven’t received an accurate gas or electricity bill for over a year, you might not have to pay for all the energy you’ve used. Under Ofgem’s 'back billing' rules, your supplier cannot send you a bill for energy you used more than 12 months ago. (https://www.ofgem.gov. uk/information-consumers/energy-advicehouseholds/check-energy-back-billingrules). Contact our Local Enquiry line for more info or search for Energy on the Citizens Advice website – www. citizensadvice.org.uk
Faulty meters are rare but if you are paying more than usual, or you get an unexpected bill, it might be a good idea to get the meter checked. Your supplier is responsible for making sure the meter works correctly. If you have a prepayment meter and it is showing an ‘error’ message then contact your supplier immediately.
Contacting your supplier can sometimes be a difficult and lengthy experience. Our Advisers can help you if you are having trouble getting through. If you are confident, webchat can be quicker than speaking over the phone. When you do get through it is always a good idea to:
- write down the name of the person you speak to
- the date and time of the call
- what exactly the problem is you need help with.
Follow up if your problem is not solved by writing to your supplier by email or letter and including your account number and name. Again, our Advisers can help with this if you don’t feel confident to do it. If you are moving from one address to another, make sure you get a meter reading on the day you leave. Write the details down and the date or take a picture on your phone. If you have a smart meter, make sure it is in smart mode and is sending readings directly to your supplier.
Inform your supplier 48 hours before you leave and give them a forwarding address. You will have 28 days to pay the final bill or you might be owed money. If you are owed money you should claim it

back. You might be charged an ‘exit fee’. Speak to your supplier as it may be possible to carry on using them as your supplier at the new address. When you move in to the new address contact the current supplier for that property and take a meter reading. Let them have it and keep a note of it for yourself.
If the new address has a prepayment meter contact the current supplier straight away. There could be debts on the meter and any money you put in could go to pay them and not your energy needs.
If you have complained formally to your supplier and you are not happy with your supplier’s response, or the problem is still not fixed within eight weeks, you can complain to theEnergy Ombudsman. https://www.energyombudsman.org/ contact-us.
Again, if you do not feel confident to do this, our Advisers can help.
Detailed information can be found on the Citizens Advice website:- https://www. citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/energy/ energy-supply/ and help is available if you are on a low income or certain benefits and struggling to pay for your energy .

Syston Tenant Wins
Three Awards For his Beautiful Garden
Mick Pipes was honoured to win three awards in the Charnwood Borough Council’s Annual Tenants Garden Competition.
Hewon first place in three categories: House or Flat, Fruit and Vegetable and Best year-round Garden.
Birstall and District Art Society
attending each session.
The Wednesday evening sessions, pictured below left held in the village hall, Wanlip from 6.30pm to 8.30pm have also proved popular, although there is still more room for others to join in. If you would like to see if the Wednesday evening and/or Friday morning sessions would suit you then you can go for up to three weeks at just £3 per session. Full details are on the website www.badas.uk
The Stn were invited to visit Mick and Pamela to see their beautiful garden that Mick has created. It was much larger than we had anticipated, as they have a corner plot with an unusual shaped garden. Mick has created some wonderful seated areas and used the space to its full advantage, with flowers, shrubs, fruit and vegetables.
Mick explained that it was very overgrown when they first moved in some seven years ago and that they had a small lawn which was very uneven and so they dug it up and replaced it with gravel giving the whole garden a cohesive flow.
We are not surprised that he won three individual awards as the garden is very beautiful, peaceful and a sun trap. Mick received his certificates at an award event in the town hall attended by the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Margaret Smidowicz.
Congratulations to Mick Pipes on winning three of the main awards and we hope he and Pamela continue to enjoy their lovely garden.

eventually lost to league leaders Kibworth they did give the champions elect a real fright. Syston batted first and posted a modest 145 thanks largely to Charlie Taylor who top scored with 49. Syston then bowled and fielded superbly and Kibworth were made to fight for every run. With the score at 112-7 the match was very much in the balance but Kibworth finally got home without further loss. Zahir Taher was the pick of the bowlers with 3-25.

Syston Town C.C. held their annual Pub Day competition over the late Summer Bank Holiday weekend. Six teams competed for the trophy and the winners this year were Gelre C.C, a touring side from The Netherlands. In the final they defeated Beedles Lake, the winning run coming off the last ball of the match. The photograph above shows the trophy being presented to the winning team by club President David Fox. It was a splendid day enjoyed by all and even the sun managed to shine for a change.

The 2nd XI have also had a poor second half to the season and the match against Leicester Caribbean was particularly frustrating. In a rain affected game they were set a modest target of 95 in 22 overs. A slow start set them behind the rate and despite a well struck 29 not out from Yash Kapdi they fell just short on 91-7. A much needed win finally came against YMA. A solid batting performance saw Syston reach 222-7 with skipper Henry Whait leading by example with 56. YMA lost early wickets but some big hitting brought them back into the game before they were finally dismissed for 196 with Sachin Kalyan taking 4-61.
The Sunday XI lost two close games in a row. Against Barrow they posted 169-6 with Sahil Singh and Nitin Odedra both scoring 54 but Barrow got home to win by 4 wickets. They

In an excellent game of cricket, Syston set a challenging 225-5 with Nitin Odedra again top scoring with 54.
