Syston Twinning Celebrate 40th Anniversary Members of Syston Twinning made an historic visit to Deville les Rouen between the 13th and 16th May when they celebrated their 40th Anniversary albeit two years on because of the COVID restrictions.

The group had a great visit in fabulous weather. It was also quite an emotional visit having not seen each other since 2019 when Syston hosted friends from Deville les Rouen.

At their committee meeting on the Saturday morning they discussed how they can build on the friendship between the two towns by acting as a liaison between schools, sport clubs including football and martial arts as well as the Town’s bands.

It is a great way to discover the real people of our Twinned Town and making life long friends at the same time.

You don’t have to be able to speak French although a little understanding helps.

We can help if you are interested in learning or developing your language skills.

Our Town of Syston has been twinned with Deville les Rouen since 1980 and many of the gifts given to Syston by the French twinning are on display in the Community Centre, they include the first gift of a bell which hangs in the Brookside suite.

There will be a small delegation from

Deville les Rouen visiting in November for the Remembrance weekend. They will join the parade along with members of Syston Twinning on Sunday 13th November.

Beardsley’s Tea Room I would like to extend a huge thank you on behalf of myself and the entire team at Beardsley’s Tearoom for everyone’s support and custom over the last two years.

It’s certainly been an interesting and challenging time but one that has taught us a lot and has resulted in some changes that will undoubtedly stand us in better stead as we move back into “business as usual”.

We remained open for take away from the improvised window ‘hatch’ whilst lockdown restrictions were in place, and worked to develop more garden and sheltered seating outside to suit evolving guidelines.

These areas remain ever popular now and have helped to increase our seating capacity. We were fortunate to remain busy throughout and as the good weather arrived last summer we made use of the governments kickstart scheme by welcoming Nicole to the team. She is now a permanent and invaluable member of Beardsley’s front of house staff.

At the time of writing, we are also looking to add to our Kitchen staff and would love to hear from anyone with experience in a food preparation role (the position is available on either a full or part time basis, shifts 8.30am to 4.30pm).

Drive It Day 2022

Drive It Day is a special day devised back in the early 20th century where owners of classic cars are encouraged to take them out for a run somewhere.

Local residents Terry Farmer and Vicki Friend, aided by friends Mick Squire and Colin Readwin from Sileby decided that they would organise a short run from Stonehurst Family Farm and Motor Museum to Gates Garden Centre, near Oakham on Sunday 24th April, to leave Stonehurst from 9.30am onwards after refreshments including bacon baps!.

very narrow roads! It passed Quenby Hall, Eyebrook Reservoir and Launde Abbey and onwards to Gates to park.

There was then an opportunity to enjoy refreshments, to meet up with other classic car enthusiasts and do some shopping, especially in the splendid Farm Shop.

There was no charge for this run but donations (preferably silent) were asked for Rainbow's Children's and Young People's Hospice. Forty four cars took part and raised a great £600.

Syston and District Volunteer Centre Promoting and sustaining personal independence and community and family ties through the provision of subsidised transport and other volunteer-led services.

The place to be on Saturday 9th July will be Central Park, Syston.

On that date, Syston and District Volunteer Centre is to hold an exhibition - “Help is at Hand!” featuring many of the local organisations which offer social, cultural, sporting, educational, recreational, financial, medical, spiritual and/or emotional support to people of all ages, thereby easing problems and enhancing quality of life.

The Syston and District Volunteer Centre is heavily subsidising the event which is intended to demonstrate to all visitors that whatever their individual need or interest, a local organisation exists to meet their expectations and requirements.

Many of these organisation operate “under the radar” with a great deal of work being put in by small but dedicated groups of volunteers to help support all sections of our local communities. With limited resources, they are normally unable to afford to promote themselves effectively in order to promote their services, attract members, recruit volunteers or generate adequate funding.

Too many local residents “suffer in silence”, experiencing great inconvenience, distress and loneliness simply through ignorance of what support is available locally.

“Help is at Hand!” is intended to address these deficiencies.

The event will be officially opened at 10.00 am. by TV presenter, Anne Davies. The Syston Town Band will

present two half-hour concerts and it is hoped to attract other local organisations to take the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

Chairman of Trustees, Paul Lomas, says: “The Volunteer Centre is happy to curate and organise this event, aimed at helping everyone within our local communities to realise just what a wealth of local support services are available to them in all areas of life.

We are grateful for the significant donation we received from the sale of Syston Knitting Banxy calendars which we are now happy to share.”

DR Electrical Family-Run Appliances Firm Launches New Showroom with Celebratory Events Showroom picture taken in the 1980s

A family-run Leicester business with a 50-year history of selling and repairing electrical appliances is expanding into much larger premises.

DR Electrical is moving from its current showroom on Loughborough Road, Leicester, to Syston (next to the train station), where it will display and stock even more kitchen appliances and white goods, and also offer on-site appliance repairs.

The extra space will also enable the business to host live product showcases and cooking demonstrations, as well as giving customers the opportunity to view a much wider range of the latest goods before buying.

The popular long-standing firm invited members of the public and local businesses to join the celebrations in May as part of two launch events at the new showroom,

packed full of giveaways and promotions.

The first was held on 20th May for businesses only and then everyone was invited to see what’s in store on 21st May. New chapter in firm’s long history of growth and success The move to a larger showroom marked the latest chapter in DR Electrical’s history of growth and success, which has accelerated as a result of the pandemic, as more people turned to trusted local specialists for services.

The business was founded in 1971 by trained electrical engineer Leonardo De Rienzo. At that time, automatic washing machines were just being introduced into the market and Leonardo was one of the first engineers in the area to offer repairs to these new appliances.

As demand grew, the company expanded from a man-and-van repair business to a larger operation, employing several engineers across the Midlands. DR added a retail arm, selling washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, fridge-freezers and range cookers, in one of Leicestershire’s biggest kitchen appliance showrooms.

A large warehouse full of stock, plus a same day order and collect service, and delivery across the Midlands, means people can get quick and easy access to a wide variety of goods and appliances.

This has now been taken to the next level, with more investment planned in the website, supported by a huge new warehouse for greater stock levels.

It’s not only the Queen who is celebrating a 70th Anniversary in 2022, local independent charity Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland, are also celebrating 70 years of support this year Teaming up with long-established Leicester-based bakery Pukka, on Wednesday 13th April, Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland invited over 100 local older people, many of them veterans, for a free afternoon of Pie and Mash at Loughborough Town Hall.

As part of their momentous 70th anniversary celebrations, Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland hosted the event, with local service users enjoying an afternoon of delicious food and good company. Guests were treated to a tasty pie supplied

by Pukka, accompanied with mash and veg which were donated by Morrisons and prepared and served up by Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland’s catering team. Following speeches from the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Paul Baines, Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland’s Assistant Director, Troy Young and a fundraising raffle, guests also tucked into a tasty dessert of apple crumble and custard.

Volunteers from global engineering group, Meggitt and local Morrisons community champions also came along to lend a hand on the day.

The idea for the event was originally sparked by the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Paul Baines upon a visit to Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland’s Charnwood Men and Women in Shed project last November where he was inspired to present the idea of a community event to Pukka.

Located in Loughborough, the Shed provides a safe, friendly and inclusive environment for local older men and women to share practical skills, tools and resources to work on projects of their choosing at their own pace.

Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland have grown to be the largest independent local Age UK in England. The demand for their services has grown exponentially since 1952 and they are tremendously proud of their achievements, especially during the last two years when they’ve been a lifeline for thousands of local older people.

Councils to Consider Approach over Housing and Employment Distribution District councils across Leicestershire, working with the City Council and County Council, have agreed to consider a proposed approach to the distribution of new homes and employment land to meet future needs which cannot be accommodated in Leicester.

All councils in the country need to identify land for new homes and employment sites as part of their strategic planning responsibilities and they are set targets

by Government based on how the areas are expected to grow.

However, in some areas like Leicester there is not enough land available to meet these growth targets. Therefore, neighbouring authorities are required under current planning law set by national government to investigate taking on this ‘unmet need’.

All councils in Leicestershire, including the city and county councils and all seven district and borough councils, are under a legal duty to co-operate with each other to ensure that any ‘unmet needs’ are met within Leicestershire. Therefore, the councils have been in discussions over how to meet Leicester’s ‘unmet need’.

It has been agreed that the councils consider a draft document in the coming months called a Statement of Common Ground.

This document includes a potential

distribution of new homes and employment land across the county and is additional to the growth needs that each district has to find land for.

This document has not been formally agreed by partner councils yet. All councils will consider the Statement of Common Ground through their own individual governance processes.

Leicester needs to build around 39,400 new homes up to 2036. However, despite significant development of brownfield and greenfield sites across the city, it does not have the space for around 18,700 of these homes. It also does not have space for around 23 hectares of employment land.

A planning steering group called the Members Advisory Group, which involves all councils in Leicestershire, has recommended district councils consider formally approving the Statement of Common Ground.

Terry Richardson, chair of the Members Advisory Group, said: “This is a significant challenge for Leicester and Leicestershire, but all councils are working together to ensure we do what is best for our local communities.

“It is important we deliver the housing and employment we need to ensure people have homes to live in and jobs. It is equally important that we plan that growth so it is controlled and limits the impact on our environment.

“Leicester simply does not have the land within its city boundaries to meet expected demand for homes and employment over the next 16 years and we are required by Government to work

together on a local level to find local solutions.

“It will also be important for the Government to support this joint working with the necessary funding of critical infrastructure, such as transport, schools and health provision to support the growth.”

City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “We are making enormous efforts to accommodate as much housing and employment land in the city as we can, for example with the ongoing development of Leicester’s Waterside and at Ashton Green.

“However, we simply cannot meet predicted need for all the housing and employment land the Government sets out. That’s why we immensely grateful to all our neighbouring councils for their constructive attitude to this Statement of Common Ground.

“By working together, we can ensure that agreements about where development takes place stay in the hands of local decision-makers who are accountable to local people.”

A considerable amount of work has gone into looking at a range of factors when considering how to distribute the unmet need across the county. Factors include the functional relationship of each district with the city, the balance of jobs and homes in each district, and deliverability of the distribution of development.

When taking account of these factors, it is being proposed in the draft Statement of Common Ground that each district takes a portion of Leicester’s identified unmet constructive attitude to this Statement of

When taking account of these factors, it is being proposed in the draft Statement of Common Ground that each district takes a portion of Leicester’s identified unmet need between 2020-36.

This Month in the Garden

Tales from the Plot

The beautiful orange poppy at the top of the page set itself several years ago and it’s a welcome addition to the garden – in fact, I’d like more of it but it doesn’t seem to want to spread no matter how many times I’ve sprinkled the seeds around. This year, however, a new plant has emerged right next to the fence and where I’ve definitely not sprinkled seed. Perhaps it prefers the rougher ground to the well-fed soil in the border. I’d hate to lose it so I’ll just leave it and the parent plant where they are – at least they’re growing where they’re happy!

Staying with orange coloured flowers, a favourite has to be this geum Totally Tangerine which, although not fussy about soil type, in contrast to the poppy will nevertheless appreciate the addition of some garden compost.

There are many varieties of geum with a wide range of colours but this one’s popularity is well deserved and it’ll flower for months if you remove spent flower spikes.

This charming little hardy orchid is one which my uncle Derek gave to me a couple of years ago. I grow it in a terracotta pot and overwinter it next to the house for a bit of protection. I must confess I didn’t pay attention when Derek told me what it was called but on watching BBC2’s Beechgrove Garden recently similar

orchids were featured so I was able to do a Google search and I’m pretty sure it’s one of the Pleione varieties.

If there are any orchid experts reading this please forgive my lack of knowledge!

Another plant that belonged to Derek and Vi which they wanted me to have is this lovely bougainvillea, which now lives in my porch where it gets plenty of sun.

They are such exotic looking plants and this one has variegated leaves.

Less exotic but no less lovely was the woodland floor at Prior’s coppice near Oakham where our birdwatching group visited recently, which was covered with wild flowers including bluebells, cowslips, violets and red campion, although it did occur to me that these can also be found in my own garden: many would call them weeds but as the saying goes, a weed is just a plant in the wrong place and I don’t have the heart to rip them out.

In fact, I have noticed on my forays to nurseries and garden centres that more and more wild flowers are being sold, which is no bad thing; they are after all very beautiful, it’s just that, being native plants they do tend to spread rather quickly but, as Derek used to say – if dandelions were sold as garden plants people would buy them!

I believe that having your own allotment is the best way to provide affordable, fresh, healthy fruit and vegetables for you and your family.

On your allotment plot you have the choice and control over how you want to grow. I try to grow as organically as I can, however we must all remember that a dandelion is to some a nuisance weed but to others a salad ingredient. Syston’s plot-holders come from all walks of life and we all have our own ideas; we must all remember different isn’t necessarily wrong it’s just different!

Hopefully if all has gone well by this month you’ll start to reap the heartwarming effects of your labour, this month the first pickings of lettuce, beetroot and the first spring cabbage is always a treat.

The plot is now working at full capacity as everything seems to take off this month with frost, hopefully, being a thing of the past. Brussel sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, celeriac, courgettes, outdoor cucumbers, French and runner beans, leeks, pumpkins, squashes, sweet corn, outdoor tomatoes that have been started off indoors should all now be in their final position. As with all young plants water in carefully and protect from birds with netting.

The soil should be warming up suddenly, that means the weeds will also grow prolifically. It does sadden me when you see new plot holders take on a plot with massive

enthusiasm digging and tidying, getting the plot ready but then stay away for a few weeks and when they return I’ve witnessed the despair on their face because the plot has weeded over again - if they just visit twice a week and spend 20 minutes with a hoe that’s all it takes to keep things under control.

I find it very satisfying knowing that the plot is now full of plants that we’ve mostly grown from seed and if cared for will feed our family for the rest of the year and well into the next.

The National Federation of Cemetery Friends, of which we are an associate member, held an open week from 30th April to 8th May. To help with this The Friends of Syston, Barkby Road, Cemetery held an open afternoon on 7th May with a theme of raising the awareness of the Commonwealth War Graves within the Cemetery. We have ten War Graves and we identified each one

on the day with a balloon. Two were difficult to locate because they are private headstones.

Is been a busy time changing the displays in the Chapel to keep up with the various celebrations which are coming so close together. We have lots of new plans for further improvement to the Chapel so watch this space!

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News

News The parish church of St Peter and St Paul holds its regular services on Wednesday mornings at 9.30am and Sundays at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

June brings the celebration of our Queen of 70 years. The church will be open for people to come in and spend some time looking at the displays and perhaps take some of the refreshments on offer, see details on the page 20 of this issue. There will be special thanksgiving service on Sunday 5th June at 10.00am all welcome.

The 29th June sees our ‘Patronal Day’ of St Peter and St Paul. We will be celebrating this on Sunday 26th at the 10.00am service.

We continue to meet the women in the bible who influence faith and the development of Christianity. These are held in Barkby Church on the last Thursday of the month – this month is the 30th June. We start at 7.15pm with a social gathering including wine and/or tea and coffee.

We are hosting a fund-raising event with ‘Auctioneer and TV Personality’ Charles Hanson on 9th June in Barkby Church in aid of the charity LSPI. Special Birthday Recently Doreen Payne, long standing member of the Parish Church, celebrated her 90th birthday. Many older Syston residents may remember Doreen in the Public Library where she worked for about thirty years.

Unfortunately, a family member arriving the day before brought Covid with them so her special family day and her party had to be deferred. Doreen also caught the virus.

The church had arranged flowers for her and these were taken round on the Sunday following her birthday.

These were delivered as safely as possible.

suffering from Covid, Doreen placed a small table just outside the front door so that the flowers would be placed on it away from the person doing the delivery.

It was a splendid arrangement from Designer Daisies who, on hearing that Doreen is visually disabled, arranged colourful flowers and, even more thoughtfully, many were scented.

Concert on 25th June at 7.30pm We are really looking forward to the fact that we can open the church again for a concert.

On Saturday 25th June at 7.30pm the Ratcliffe Chorale will be singing again in church after over two years. Now under a new Musical Director, Simon Lubkowski, they will perform a wide variety of music including classic pop, and composers such as Vivaldi, Howard Goodall and Karl Jenkins.

It will be an entertaining evening for all and entry is free!

Tots at Ten This group is open and running successfully again in the church hall Lower Church Street from 10.00am to 11.30am. The numbers are limited to 20 so it is essential to book. This can be done through the Facebook page-Tots at 10 (Syston). You will be made most welcome.

From Social Distancing to Social Gathering

by Ineke Doesburg Syston History Group Yesterday is history... until you visit the Syston History Group.

Then you’ll notice history is very much the present. During the first annual general meeting, I up with chairman Tim. He loves to share historical facts and vague stories about our village.

Did you know that The Green, for instance, has never really been green?

But why it has the name, nobody knows.

Since this is the first meeting in two years, looking back at the minutes becomes a bit of an antic with the world being changed and so many things being put on hold at the same time.

The group might have been dormant from the outside, but they have certainly been active within.

The group has published another book (apparently they have published several books in the past!) about Syston in the 20th century. Before I can ask where they get their information from, an unknown item is brought to the table...literally.

A member has found a bronze looking grinder in a charity shop and would like some input from the other members.

We are invited to have a look and guess.

Within 30 minutes we have solved the puzzle. The mystery object is a sea salt grinder from Greece!

Everybody is constantly invited to share their ideas and opinions which makes this meeting really animated. They certainly have some great ideas for their group like guest speakers (how about Winston Churchill telling his view of events?) and a boat trip with sandwiches and wine.

After the meeting, it is time to go for a walk through Syston. Not for real, but by looking at slides from the last decades.

Even though this is all long before my time, I do not feel left out in any way.

The reminiscing around me takes me back to my own memories and before we know it, we start talking windmills.

That sometimes happens when you invite a Dutchie around.

While we were taking the picture for this article another surprise object appears.

This time, a brick with round edges and words stamped into it. We have not solved that puzzle this time but are hopefully able to do so during the next meeting.

A new Choir has been set up in Syston by vocal coach Ruby Jade Procinski from RJ Vocal Coaching.

Our picture above shows Ruby, third left front row, with her Adult Choir.

Ruby is a professionally trained Vocalist and Vocal Coach with a BA Hons degree from the British Institute of Modern Music. She has 15 years experience of working as a professional singer all over the world and has over eight years of vocal coaching experience. Teaching across all ages, she set up this choir as she wanted to share her passion and love of music by offering vocal coaching to others and bring people together as a community.

The Syston Adult Choir is not a traditional choir by any means; it is all

about having fun, doing something you enjoy and having a good old giggle whilst doing it! We sing a range of classics such as Bon Jovi, Queen, Abba, Ed Sheeran- the list is endless! Everyone is welcome regardless of vocal ability- it’s all about having fun!

The Syston group is such a brilliant mix of personalities, who bring laughter and positive energy each and every week, we are constantly laughing Thursday evening!

The choir is held upstairs at The Pharmacie Arms in Syston, every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.

The bonus is there’s a bar downstairs, so feel free to grab yourself a drink and join in the fun!

The scammers claim to be associated with the council and explain a refund is due. They then ask for your bank details in order to pay out the £150 rebate.

According to those who've fallen foul of this scam, handing over these details led to large sums of money being deducted from their bank accounts shortly after the phone call.

Dear Editor, I have recently found out that Syston has no plans to celebrate our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

How disgraceful when other villages, Towns and even the City are planning events, plus taking part in the big lunch event on a park and inviting their residents to join together to mark this once in a life time event. After the two year we have all had it was the least the council should have done.

Does Syston Town Council have no respect for our monarch of 70 years?

They appear to just attend meetings, talk and make punitive gestures like planting a tree and placing a bench outside the council office when there is already a seat outside the building.

Why could it not have been placed somewhere more useful, for example on Melton Road near the shops, for people to sit and rest a while.

Perhaps its time we had some new, proactive community minded people on Syston Town Council who would go out of their way to bring our town together after the terrible two years we have all had to endure.

Shame on you all!

Festival of Archaeology The 2022 Festival of Archaeology programme has been revealed by organisers and is being hailed as the best yet.

Festival co-ordinator, Peter Liddle, said “After two difficult years due to COVID the Festival is back and is bigger and better than ever. Already over a hundred events are listed on our website with more being added every week. There are events every single day during the Festival, which runs through July. There is something for everyone with family events, talks from some of our leading heritage experts and a wide programme of guided walks allowing people to explore sites around our county.”

This year’s Festival theme is ‘Journeys’ - take a journey to explore and celebrate the rich and diverse heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland. Visit new places, and old, and find out about the archaeology and history that is all around us.

Winning Start For Town C.C. Syston Town C.C. made an excellent start to the new season by winning their first two games before going down by the smallest of margins in their third. At home against Electricity Sports, Syston racked up 268-4 with Australian visitor Liam O’Farrell (shown pictured) hitting an impressive 83 on his debut and skipper Ram Ghuman 81 not out.

On an excellent track, Electricity Sports were limited to 241-6 for a comfortable victory. A visit to play Houghton and Thurnby followed and Syston set a target of 236-6 thanks largely to Mo Salejee with 51 and Charlie Taylor 68 not out. Opening pair Umar Razzaq (3-31) and George Corbett (2-36) broke the back of home innings and they finished well short on 202-9. On their visit to play Ashby Hastings, Syston were asked to bat first and were wobbling on 80-6 before Charlie Taylor (43) and the lower order restored some respectability to Syston’s final total of 184. They made Ashby fight all the way, reducing them to 128-5, before they got home to win off the very last ball.

A youthful second XI have had a difficult start to the season with three successive defeats. Maher Stars set a challenging 271 and at one stage Syston were on track with Mo Salejee making 56 and Asad Pathan 63.
