Syston’s Remembrance Sunday Parade On Sunday 12th November, everyone in Syston gathered to remember those who gave their tomorrow for our today. The parade lead from Syston Car Park, down to the war memorial. For the first time the parade began with a pipe band followed by the scout band who lead the parade, with the Army cadets lead by Darren Rickman following. Behind these came The Vice Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Col Murray Colville, pictured left, with Charnwood MP Edward Argar, Royal British Legion (RBL) member Gary Taylor followed by local councillors, veterans, members of the Syston RBL, Scouts, Girl Guides and various other Syston community groups. The service began moments before 11.00am in which everyone listened to veteran Tony Bond, pictured above right with Rev’d Ros Harper, reading out “at the going down of the sun.. .” and then
proceeded to listen to the last post being played. It was a lovely moment to stand in silence and remember those who fought for our country, even someone’s dog paid their own tribute by howling and singing along to the last post which put a smile on the faces of everyone who attended. Wreaths were then laid by our local veterans and community groups, other representatives followed by laying their wreaths. It was especially nice to see the new bench that has been placed here for the late veteran, Dennis North. It seemed very sad to see the first Remembrance Sunday in Syston without him, but many people still talked about him, so it was clear to see that he is greatly missed in our community. The parade went back to the car park and was dismissed. People then either went to the church, which had a display provided by Gary Taylor from the RBL, which was talked about quite a lot for the rest of the day, or they went to the Conservative Club for the Lunch Event. The lunch event had a good turn out and once again had Sarah Clarke gracing everyone with her beautiful singing which really put a lot of smiles on people’s faces. I chatted with her about this being the first year without Dennis and that it was sad without him, but her performance was one that Dennis would have loved as he always did. I really think Dennis would’ve been proud of this year’s turnout. “We will remember them” By Deanna Johnson
