The Stn hasbeenincommunication withthecompanybringingthe bankinghubtoSyston.

Theyhavestatedthattheyhave,to date,beenunabletosecurea suitablepremisesfortheHub.An offerinearlysummer,despitebeing verycompetitiveterms,wasnot successfultosecurepremisesthey wantedasanofferwasalready acceptedandprogressingthrough thelegalprocess.

Theyarecontinuingtoworkwiththeir localcouncilcontactsandtheir propertyagenttotryandidentify somethingsuitable:itneedstobe c1,000sqfttoaccommodatetheir counterservicesecurityandbank requirements.

Theywantedthe Stn toreassurethe peopleofSystonanddistrictthatthey remaincommittedtoopeninga BankingHubbutaredependenton suitablepremisesbeingavailable,so theywillcontinuetotryandsecurea leasefortherightpropertyand continuetoremaincommittedto openingaBankingHubforthe community.

Aftertheentrantshadadmiredthe cars,oncetheyhadarrivedandmet upwithfriendsfrompreviousruns, theysetoff,after9am,tofollowa routedrivingtowardseastern Leicestershirethroughsomebeautiful countrysideandvillages,Barkby, Tilton,Loddington,Braunstonin Rutland,passingsouthofRutland WatertocircleroundtowardsEdith WestonandontoEdmonthorpeand eventuallyarriveatWymondham Windmillforarefreshmentbreak; aftertravellingnearly49miles. varitiesof thalictrum (meadowrue) havebecomeverypopular.Their attractivefoliageissimilartothatof aquilegiasandtheirtallflowerspikes inshadesoflilacorwhiteaddan ethereallooktothegarden.The photoatthetopofthepageshowsa varietycalledHewitt'sDouble,which mycousinJanintroducedmeto,two ofwhichIplantedforthefirsttime thisyear.Theyhavecompletelywon usover,somuchsothatsheandI snappedupseveralmorepotswhilst theywerestillavailableatthegarden centreandalthoughpasttheirpeak theywillhavetimetosettleinnicely nowandshouldprovideagreatfroth offlowersnextsummer.This particularvarietyseemstoflower laterthanothervarieties,doesn't seemtomindbeinginfullsun(where othervarietiestendtopreferpartial shade)andhasalongflowering period.It'seasytoseewhyit'shighly prizedbyflowerarrangers.

QuitehowitgothereIdon'tknow becauseit'snotthesortofplantI wouldnormallybuyandasithasno knownbenefitstoBritishwildlifeit's unlikelyaseedhasbeensetbybirds. RevBiddySaundersandRevJohn Leonardledtheservicewithaspecial prayerfortheQueen.Thiswas followedbythesingingofthehymn ‘GodSaveourGraciousKing’forthe firsttimewhichwasverymoving, especiallyforoldermembersofthe congregationwhohadbeensinging GodSaveourGraciousQueenfor perhaps70years.

Theservicewasfollowedbylight refreshmentsandfellowshipinthe hall.

Thisinterchurchannual fundraiserfor Leicestershire Historic ChurchesTrust occursonthe second Saturdayin Septemberon theweekend beginning ‘HeritageWeek’.Thisyearweonly hadonepersonwhowaspreparedto cycleroundthenearbyvillagesto Syston;--theloyalcyclistTerry Farmer,whohasparticipatedfor manyyearsnow.Luckilytheweather waskindandheremaineddry.Terry visitedeightchurchesonaroute betweenBarkbytoBirstallandback hometoSyston.Heraised£240in sponsorshipfortheTrust,halfof whichreturnstoourchurchtohelp withtheupkeepofthiswonderful ancientbuilding.

Imightnotbeareligiousperson,butIam averycuriousoneandtheBroadway GospelHallhasalwaysintriguedme.I blameWhoopiGoldberginSisterAct.I decidedtovisitthisgatheringwhichthey callafamilyservice,andifI’denjoyit,I wouldstayforteaaswell. AbitundecidedIsteppedintotheGospel Hall,notknowingwhattoexpect.Butas soonasIsteppedinside,Ifeltincredibly welcome.Iwasgivenasongandhymns bookaswellasTheHolyBiblewhichwe usedduringtheservice.Theladynextto mehelpedmealongtofindtheright passagesbecausethebookdidnothave pagenumbers.EventhoughIstruggled tokeepup,Ineverfeltuneasy.Therewas

suchalovelyatmosphere,withyoung childrenplayingbetweentheseatsand everybodybeingengagedinwhatwas saidbythespeakers.Ireallyenjoyedthe speakersbringingthescripturesaliveby placingtheminthecurrentworldand makingbridgestoeverydaysituations. Theprayerswerealternatedbychatsand hymns.Butnotlikethemusicweknow fromSisterAct,andthatconfusedme. Duringtea,whichIobviouslystayedfor becauseIreallywantedtotalktothese like-mindedindividuals,Iaskedthem abouttheirandmyideaofgospel.Itwas explainedtomethatgospelmeansgood news,possiblyderivedfromoldEnglish, andthattheirgatheringsareaboutgood news,althoughthefocusmightbeonsin thereisaremedyforthat,salvation.This makestheirfaithalevelledplayingfield whichisaccessibletoeveryone.I understandwhattheyaresayingbecause thisisthefeelingIhadduringthewhole gathering.Nomatterwhereyouarefrom inlife,youarewelcome.Thiswinterthey willheatthechurchandwelcome everyonewhoneedsawarmshelter.

TheBroadwayGospelHallseemstobea lotgreaterthanjustachurch,it’sa communityopentoeveryonewhetheryou arereligiousornot.

Thisyear’sPraiseintheParkevent wasorganisedbySystonChurches Together,whichismadeupofSt PeterandStPaul’sChurch,Syston MethodistChurchandtheCatholic ChurchoftheDivineInfantof Prague.SystonChurchesTogether meetseveraltimesayearandshare inecumenicalprayeronceamonth, workingtogethertorevealandshare God’slovewithintheircommunity.

AnintergenerationalgroupofSyston peoplecametogetherinfellowship andprayer.Thesunshoneasthe SystonUkuleleBandbroughtan upbeat,gospelflavourtothe gathering,whichsawmorethan50 peoplesitoutsideamongtheflowers inthetown’sCentralParkSundial Garden.

ReverendBiddySaunders,curatein theparishesofSystonandBarkby,

welcomedeveryoneandledthe openingprayersinaservicethatwas sprinkledwithrousinghymns, readingsandreflection.

“Bybringingchurchoutsidewewere demonstratingthatchurchdoesn’t havetobeat10amonaSunday morning,inabuilding,andthatwe canallcometogether–peopleof faith,andofnone,”saysReverend Biddy.“Themainmessageisthatno matterwhoyouareorwhatyou’re doing,Godishereforyouandwe areacommunity.Everybodyis welcome,anytime!”

JanefromtheCatholicChurchreada poemandfinishedwithaprayerfor thepeopleofUkraine.Margaret,from theMethodistchurchreadthelyrics ofthesong‘prayforaworldwhere everychildisfree’.TheMethodist minister,ReverendJDanielYovan, gaveareflectiononwhatitmeansto cometogether.

Theeventbroughttogetherpeopleof allages.Peoplejoinedinwiththe singing,clappingalongandwhenthe bandstruckupShineJesusShine andTheSpiritLivestoSetUsFree somefeltthedesiretodance.One littlegirlentertainedthecrowdwith herdance.

Allinallanentertainingeventwhere peoplefeltfreetocometogetherand demonstratetheirsolidaritytotheir community.

OnMonday5thSeptember,anewshop openedintheSystonTownSquarecalled ‘SecondTimeAround’.Forthelasteight yearsVictoriaandJackiehave successfullymanagedtheCaudaEquina charityshopandafterbothbeingmade redundantduetothespinalinjuries associationdecidingthattheirfundraising futurewouldnolongerbeinretailsales, theladiesdecidedtoputtheirprevious experiencetogooduse.Thesewonderful ladieshaveopenedaCIC(community interestcompany).Anonprofitcompany whoseproceedswillgotolocalactivities, groupsandseasonalfundraisingventures intheSystoncommunity. Aftereightyearsofbuildingupa friendshipwithlocalpeopleintheshop theyarecontinuingonwithsecondhand goodsandwouldlovelocalpeopleto donateitemssuchasclothing,brica brac,householditems,books,dvd’s,vinyl andcraftitems(wool,buttons,patterns etc.).VictoriaandJackieareusinghelp fromCharnwoodBoroughCounciland experiencefromVoluntaryAction Leicestertofindthebestwaystohelp

localprojects.Pleasepopinforaleaflet ortoknowmore,speaktoVictoriaand Jackie.“Thisisabigstepintoday’s currenteconomicclimateandwehopeby sellinglowcost,secondhandgoods,we canhelpthosewhoneedit”.They wouldn’tbeabletodothiswithoutthe community’shelp,bydonatingtothem,it reducestheamountofitemsendingupin landfillwhichcanmakeahugedifference.
