Celebrating Syston Knitting Banxy

As Syston Knitting Banxy (SKB) put out her 100th topper showing the cast of the Vicar of Dibley. She said: ‘I was so inspired by the Royal Mail’s wonderful stamps celebrating The Vicar of Dibley (issued 14.1.2025). It’s a fabulous show, and I have great admiration for Dawn French. Missing those wonderful actors who are no longer with us.’

We thought we would give you a round up of what she had produced during 2024.

Our fabulous SKB created 21 post box toppers although not all on display in Syston, one famous one was seen on Coronation Street’s Christmas special as well as the one

Local Calor Stockist

she created back in 2020 for Syston that was then given to the Street and appeared in December 2024 episodes. In January 2024 she created the Topper of the Queen Victoria Public house, which featured on the BBC Radio Late Show and East Midlands Today on Wednesday 12th February 2025, when they visited as part of a week long tour of the country visiting pubs called the Queen Victoria and bringing with them a replica of the bust that features in EastEnders which is celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary. The Queen Victoria is one of the oldest in Syston, and SKB donated the topper to the pub. The April topper was for LCFC champions which was auctioned for LOROS and raised £500 for that most worthy charity. The Kasabian topper appeared in July and then one for Thunderbirds day in September and she finished the year with the Home Alone one, just to name a few.

She also produced 29 bollard toppers ranging from celebrations, proposals of marriage and retirement gifts. She created a memorial for the three little girls who lost their lives in Southport and it was gifted to one of the mothers who has it as a memorial in her workplace. As well as celebrating the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey, ‘Tidy’ one.

But she then created three plaques,

one for D-Day and gifted to our local RBL, Zyla the police dog who gave her life in the line of duty and gifted to Zyla’s owner, as well as one for a local postie who retired after 40 years.

She has created over 16 raffle prizes for local causes including 12 postbox tins of shortbread with miniature Christmas toppers.

She is often donated wool from people and in January 2024 she made 15 pairs of children’s mittens which were placed on the school railings to go to anyone who needed them. She made a Vardy hat that was gifted to Jamie Vardy, she has made a variety of heart keyrings for a variety of causes or events. In total, individual pieces number over 186.

Her major project was that of a soldier and dog on a bench covered in knitting. This piece took over 300 hours to make and was donated to the Secret garden at Glenfield hospital for Remembrance Day 2024. It is an amazing piece of work with the soldier in full WW1 uniform sat on the bench covered in knitting with a knitted dog sitting alongside of him. It is a very poignant piece with a beautiful and emotional story behind it, which we featured in the Dec/Jan issue.

Thank you SKB for all your amazing post box toppers, Continues on page 2

The Hoby & District Local

History Society Talk

The stained glass of the Horwood Brothers – the life and times of a provincial Victorian firm by Jeff Hopewell.

Jeff Hopewell, retired priest and Canon Emeritus of Leicester Cathedral, will give a talk on ‘The stained glass of the Horwood Brothers – the life and times of a provincial Victorian firm’ at the Hoby & District Local History Society on Wednesday 19th March, 7.30pm, Hoby Village Hall LE14 3DT. All are welcome; the price for non members is £2.00 (pay on door) or visit www. hobyanddistricthistory.co.uk for more

information.

From very humble beginnings the three youngest of the six Horwood Brothers were educated by the Rector of Mells, Somerset, who was also the Lord of the Manor, at his private academy and his curate taught them the art of stained glass. With his sponsorship they were soon working for some of the major names in Victorian church architecture, such as Butterfield and Street. They set up their own business and although much of their work is to be found in Somerset and Wiltshire, examples can be found in many counties of England, with some in Wales and Ireland and as far afield as Australia and South Africa. One of the brothers, Harry, emigrated to Canada where he set up his own flourishing firm and two of his sons became prominent architects there. Their work in this country spans a period of over 40 years, from 1852 to 1895. The talk is a story of social mobility in which three generations of the same family moved from being an impoverished farm labourer, and convict, having stolen some barley and peas to feed his family, to respected craftsmen to highlyregarded professionals. It looks at how the Horwoods gained commissions, and from whom, and why certain designs were chosen as suitable memorials. Also touched on

is their place in the society of nearby Frome, the town to which they moved from the semi-feudal atmosphere of Mells.

Jeff Hopewell is a retired priest and Canon Emeritus of Leicester Cathedral. He has long been interested in church architecture and furnishings and has written a book on the Glaswegian stained glass artist, Douglas Hamilton. He is also the leading expert on ganjifa, the traditional playing cards of India. Fortunately, it is not a hotly contested title!

The Hoby & District Local History Society is a voluntary organisation. The Society brings together people from all walks of life who are interested in the local history of the Leicestershire villages of Hoby, Rotherby, Ragdale and Brooksby and the District around them. The society was founded in 2013.

Local Girls Represent Their Club as Mascots at the Netball Nations Cup 2025

On Saturday 1st February the Netball Nations Cup 2025 took place at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. Lily, shown right in the image above, and Isabelle shown above left, from Queniborough Primary School had the fantastic opportunity to represent their Netball Club (Hawks Netball Club Leicester) as Bee Netball Mascots for the international games. Bee Netball is England Netball's fun netball programme for children (aged 5-11-year-olds).

On the day, Lily and Isabelle had a backstage experience, rubbing shoulders with international netball players, as well as having the chance to walk hand in hand with one of the players into the arena. They lined up, side by side for the national anthems and the girls were lucky enough to appear on Live TV. They had a wonderful time and were proud to be part of the Mascot experience that England Netball had to offer. The girls then watched the game and England Roses came away with a 62-36 win against Malawi.

Well done Lily and Isabelle, you did a great job.

The festivities are a distant memory, New Years resolutions fallen by the wayside! Maybe you thought “this year I will make my Will or Lasting Power of Attorney” and maybe you said that last year? We can assist you with this from the comfort of your own home with free local home visits, our charges are fair and transparent. So don’t put it off any longer, it’s important !

Canine Community

Hi my name is Liv, and I live locally to the area. I have always had a passion and a want to help others in many ways which sees me currently volunteering at LOROS, where I have recently received my five year award for service. Alongside this I also work as a co trainer with lived experience of Autism for the Oliver McGowan Campaign. In between this I have recently designed and now run a not for profit website called “Canine Community” for all of those small businesses who sell dog products, offer dog related services or even gifts for those pawrents.

The “Canine Community” was built from a mixture of my Autistic and ADHD mind with a sprinkle of my dyslexic flair, and my love for dogs, especially my pooch Maeve. The idea was a way for businesses to advertise themselves for FREE and to also help pawrents find a range of businesses in a single platform. Due to COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis it has been such a shame to see so many small businesses having to close down.

We have lots of areas on our website including:

All of the doggies: This area came about from running my own instagram for my gorgeous pooch

Maeve, which has led us to build friendships with like minded pawrents and businesses around the country.

Pet Businesses: This area is for people to advertise their company and what they have on offer for both your pampered pooch or you their pawrent. We have lots of different categories ranging from dog toys to health supplies and personalised or digital items along with lots more.

Doggie Services: This area is for those businesses who offer a service to our playful pooches. This ranges from dog groomers to dog photographers and dog trainers to secure fields as well as lots more. This is easily navigated by selecting the region you are in and the service you need. As we head into spring, if you are looking for a doggie day out at an event, this is a way to pop these dates in your diary and get tickets to ensure you won’t miss out!

Dog Photo Competitions: This section was designed for a bit of fun with your pooch whilst allowing those who advertise with us to donate prizes and have their logos on our announcement banners and also on the competition certificates. We have a range of categories which are free to enter! Go take a look on our winners page to see our first place pooches from previous months. Whilst I have now transformed my

idea to an established website which has allowed me to get to where we are today. My next goal is to promote the Canine Community in leaflet form, and I’d like to thank Wreake Valley Rotary Club for their donation allowing me to move this forward. Keep your eyes peeled for them coming soon.

Finally as a girl with a dream whose mind never goes the easiest of routes but she gets there in the end. I am asking for help in spreading the word about the Canine Community far and wide as I am aiming big and going straight for the nationals! I always think you should start from the heart of your local community, so thank you to Syston Town News for this opportunity. If you are a business, service or use one that would be interested in signing up, please visit our website and fill out the relevant form through our join us section. We really hope to hear from you soon. https://www.caninecommunity.co.uk

Tales From The Plot March

March is the time when everything starts to get going. I usually have a mental plan in my head for the year to come as to where everything is going to go - usually that plan goes out the window within a few short weeks lol! There’s a lot that can be planted that is frost resistant: broad beans are set direct into the ground, mine are already in and just showing their faces above the soil, I saved some seed from last year and it’s a good feeling because anything I get from them I feel like they’re free … they will need protecting while they are so young and tender.

Peas will be set this month, also sown direct into the ground, some plot holders start them off in a greenhouse in guttering which just doesn’t seem practical for me however I learnt last year they will also need protection from both birds and insects, I lost the lot last year so lesson learned.

I will also set some carrot seeds in this month, I grow them in tubs in an

attempt to keep the carrot fly away, whilst this is usually quite successful it’s not 100% guaranteed, I believe covering with micromesh is probably the way forward. I grow a variety called sweet candle: I can’t recommend them enough, and as the name suggests they are deliciously sweet.

I normally have quite a lot of seedlings sown in and on the way by now, I’ve always started them off in our spare room windowsill. However

things will be a little later this yearthe spare room after redecorating is now a dressing room, and any mention of the windowsill being a nursery has been frowned upon! Now seeds will have to be set in a unheated greenhouse which I think will move them back by about six weeks…it is what it is, we have to make the most of what we have got. The good thing about this time of the year, if you’ve done the job right the plot is tidy and pretty much weed free, just regular hoeing will hopefully keep it that way, do not fall into the trap that most plot holders fall into - March is not the month to plant potatoes in the open. You can start some off undercover protected from ‘Jackfrost’ I know how tempting it can be to get them in, however patience is indeed a virtue!

Here are some dates for your diary: Syston Allotments AGM: Thursday 1st May

What’s New – Not a Lot

There’s a little bit to report: Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) and Taylor Wimpey are replacing the valves that were vandalised, at last! Charnwood has put in motion a maintenance plan for the drainage systems they are responsible for, Alleluliah!

The government have issued a press release, they’re going to invest £2.65 billion over two years to build, maintain and repair flood defences, let’s hope we get a chunk of it.

EdwardArgar MP has raised the question on how flood risk and defence is managed and the idea of a solution for Syston similar to the Brentingby Dam.

Sophie Tea at Syston!

On Friday 14th February, Age UK were thrilled to have a visit from artist and social media star Sophie Tea Art.

Following the sad news of the shop’s break-in a few weeks ago, a volunteer reached out to Sophie in the hopes she could visit the shop as part of her everpopular and viral ‘Charity Shop Friday’

Given the Flood Alert System the Environment Agency manages failed in January, this has now been rectified. The downside of this alert is that it only gives you 30 minutes to prepare, we have asked if this could be changed to give residents more time – we appreciate that an earlier alert may mean that it could be a false alarm but surely it’s better to be cautious? What do you think?

Sign up for these alerts at https://www. gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings We haven’t had any updates from the L.L.F.A. on their plans for flood mitigation upstream or any works that are in the pipeline due to ‘unprecedented’ demand on their resources, not surprising given the

series. To her surprise, Sophie responded and offered to come and spread some love on Valentine’s Day.

Staff and volunteers were delighted and a bit star struck when Sophie visited the shop and purchased a small leather hip flask for just £2.50 which she took away to hand paint in her signature style and bring back later in the day to raffle for one lucky buyer.

Having posted her visit on her Instagram to her 900,000 followers, people flocked to the shop and crowds started to gather both inside and outside!

When Sophie returned, she was overwhelmed with the response from the local community even commenting that this was the biggest crowd she'd ever had! She handed out raffle tickets to all in

number of areas that were flooded. Any updates we get will go on our Facebook page ‘Syston Community Flood Group’.

A request has been sent to our MP and Borough Councillors asking if they could find us some professional help on which flood barriers/equipment would give Syston residents and businesses the best possible defence against flooding and if there is any funding to cover the costs. It’s a long shot but worth a try. Lastly, have a look at this site: https:// floodmary.com. It has some useful tips on flood resilience.

If you have any questions or information please get in touch.

attendance and Katie was the lucky winner who was able to buy this one-of-a-kind piece. Sophie then stayed to greet everyone, signing unique items bought from the shop and taking selfies with fans. It was a fantastic day and we’re so grateful for the opportunity and everyone that came down to support our charity and celebrate with us.

President of New Barkby WI Shirley Franklin, welcomed members to the institutes February meeting.

After Jerusalem was sung and then attention given to business matters, members received a talk from Colin Ellis, from Measham, on The Settle and Carlisle Railway, with powerpoint presentation.

In the early days of the railways, there were many companies competing against each other, particularly during the Industrial Revolution, coal mines in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, plus other areas around Charnwood Forest were able to transport coal and other goods in wagons with the advent of steam locomotives.

Eventually, passengers were able to enjoy train rides and one of the great achievements was the railway line which made the journey between Leeds, Settle and Carlisle.

This scenic route starts at Leeds, Skipton and the moors, onto Ribblesdale,Settle, Ribblesdale Viaduct, Blea Moor Tunnel, linking Ribblesdale to Dentdale.

There were several scenes enroute, particularly Dent in 1947, when there had been a very snowy winter, and pictures shown of the different engines that use the route such as ‘The Waverley: 45562’, ‘Mountain Pullman: 46229’, and ‘the Cumbria Mountain Express’.

After the talk there was a question and answer period.

The vote of thanks was given by Valerie Cobb.

The competition for a picture or a model of a train, was won by Lou Chapman with a counter for a game of Monopoly. The raffle prize was won by Angela Montague.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th March, 7.30pm at the Syston Community Centre when the speaker will be Mitchell Bridgewater entitled: ‘My Sewing Bee Experience’.

Visitors are always welcome to attend.

Earwax: Sticky Facts

On average, a person produces around 1.5 to 2 grams of earwax per month. Over a lifetime of approximately 80 years, this amounts to about 1.5 to 2 kg! At Optimal Hearing we get asked about earwax all the time. We all have it, but how much do we actually know about it? Many consider it an unpleasant nuisance, yet this natural substance plays a vital role in keeping ears healthy. In this article, we’ll explore surprising facts, essential functions, and why blockages occur.

Surprising Facts About Earwax

Despite its name, earwax (also known as cerumen) isn’t wax at all. It’s a combination of secretions from tiny glands in your ear canal along with dead skin cells and tiny hairs. Its consistency varies from person to person. Your ears are self-cleaning, and earwax naturally moves out of the ear, carrying away dirt, dust and debris. Interestingly, the type of earwax you have is determined by genetics. Wet earwax, which is yellow or brown, is more common in people

of African and European descent, while dry earwax, which is grey or white, is more common in East Asian populations. Much like sweat, stress can lead to increased earwax production. Simple jaw movements like chewing or talking help push earwax out of the ear canal naturally. What Does Earwax Actually Do? Earwax serves several important purposes. It protects against infection because it has bacteriostatic and antifungal properties. It acts as a dust trap, preventing debris from reaching the delicate inner ear. It also lubricates the ear canal, keeping it from becoming dry and itchy. Surprisingly, earwax even helps keep insects out, as its sticky texture and bitter taste deter them from entering likely.the ear canal.

Why Do Earwax Blockages Occur? Normally, earwax exits the ear on its own, but sometimes it builds up and causes issues. One of the most common causes of blockages is using cotton buds, which push earwax deeper into the canal. Some people naturally produce more earwax, leading to accumulation. The shape of your individual ear canal can be a factor, and your ears aren’t always the same on both sides. Ageing plays a role as well, since earwax becomes drier and harder over time, making blockages more

Managing Your Wax: Do’s and Don’ts

To maintain healthy ears it's important to follow safe earwax management practices. Allow your ears to clean themselves naturally and seek professional advice if you suspect a blockage. Using specific sprays or drops can help keep your wax soft, making it easier for the body to expel. Avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects into your ears, as this can push wax further inside and cause blockages or damage.

When to Seek Help

If you experience hearing loss, earache, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or dizziness, you may have an earwax blockage. A professional can examine and safely remove if necessary.

Too much of a good thing

Healthy earwax might seem unpleasant and something to be embarrassed about, but it plays a key role in maintaining ear health. Instead of trying to remove it yourself, let your ears do their job – and if needed, seek professional assistance from a hearing care specialist.

Council Tenant Garden Competition Returns for 15th Year

Council tenants are being encouraged to enter the annual garden competition.

The competition is run by Charnwood Borough Council and is open to its tenants and leaseholders, who are being urged to showcase their greenfingered skills in the garden.

This year is the 15thyear of the competition, and there are nine categories to enter:

 Best House or Flat Garden

 Best Pots and hanging baskets

 Best Community Garden

 Best Sheltered Court

Best Fruit and Veg Edible Garden

 Best Newcomer

 Best Young Gardener

 Best Flower Display

Best Eco Garden (must show the use of upcycling, recycling, planting of wildflowers, environmentally friendly).

Councillor Colin Hamilton, lead member for planning and housing at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “The garden competition is a fantastic way to celebrate all the hard work that our tenants put into their gardens.

“Year after year, the quality of entries is incredible, and I’m sure 2025 will be no different. Please consider entering one or more of the categories available.

“I would also advise entrants to take photos of their gardens throughout the year and consider submitting those photos alongside their applications, as I know the unpredictable nature of our weather can often disrupt our gardening plans.

“Keep enjoying your gardens, and I look forward to seeing your entries in the coming months.”

Entries for the tenant garden competition need to be submitted by Wednesday 30th April 2025 and judging will take place the week commencing Monday 16th June. Entrants will be notified of their judging date closer to the time.

All category winners will receive High Street vouchers. The prizes are £100 for first place, £75 for second, £50 for third for each category, and all other entrants who don’t win will receive a small gift.

Winners will receive their vouchers and a certificate of their achievement at a special event later this year.

The Council has around 5,500 properties and the competition is one way of celebrating tenants’ pride in their homes and communities.

The online application form and terms and conditions for the competition can be found atwww. charnwood.gov.uk/gardens.

Tenants can also request a paper application form by contacting the customer engagement team on 01509 634 679 or 01509 634 955 or by emailinginvolvement@charnwood. gov.uk.

Are You Looking for a New Activity in 2025?

Have you ever tried lawn bowls? It is a sport open to everyone of every age.

If you enjoy being in the outdoors and are looking for something to challenge yourself and meet new people, then why not visit Syston Bowling Club, right in the centre of Syston for over 90 years.

Bowling helps build friendships, enjoy learning a new sport and taking part in competitions during the summer season. Then in the winter, there are indoor activities to keep the fun going all year.

One lady, Sheila who joined recalls how she became a member and would encourage more ladies to join. Syston bowling club will be holding an open day in April and hope to encourage new members especially ladies.

It is a great club to join and make friends and socialise, it gets you out of the house with some gentle exercise on a lovely sunny day what could be better. We stay for a bite to eat, a cuppa or a drink we are a very friendly group of people. I was a very quiet person with very little confidence. I just went to work and looked after my family, now I’m alone after my husband passing away and family are all grown up.

A five minute bus journey changed all that. The lady who sat next to me chatted about the rain as you do saying that she should have been bowling but was cancelled because of the weather.

In those few minutes she had invited me to the club, but by then it was time for me to get off the bus and it was too late for exchanging phone numbers. I thought it would be the end of this story but my daughter phoned the club which resulted in me being invited to their closing day lunch on 28th September 2008. It took me a long time before I found

the courage to open that door and walk into a group of strangers. I have never regretted it and as you can see I am still a member.

The friends you make help you through many a problem, someone to talk to and laugh with. We meet at coffee mornings, winter lunches and social events so even out of season we still keep in touch with each other. You don’t have to wait until you retire to join us there are evenings and weekend games to fit around working people, after all the younger you are the more time you have to perfect your game maybe to County or even Bowls England or just like me a roll up with friends.

Don’t be shy, be brave and give yourself that little push to join us you won’t regret it.

Sheila

MARCH

Jeanne Douglas offers psychic readings in Palmistry, Tarot, Crystal and Personal Astrology. Her telephone numbers are 01664 562 471 or 07931 293 855.

ARIES March 20 - April 19

With both Venus and Mercury in your sign this month, you’re going to find it easy to communicate when it comes to romance! Moreover, you’re beginning to work out just what you want and how to make your dearest dreams come true. This helps to heal some wounds received over the last year or so. Yes, it’s time to move on.

TAURUS

April 20 - May 20

With Uranus still in your sign, it’s probably obvious to others right now that you’re the cleverest one in the room! But you will apply this mostly to your emotional situation which needs the attention. Life is quite demanding when it comes to paying attention to detail. And if you do so then some longstanding issue gets solved.

GEMINI

May 21 - June 20

It’s rather an exciting time when you get to put your whims and wishes into action, not fearing the consequences! Yes, it really is time to put yourself first and to do just what you want to. You’re also rather accommodating in the process and others will feel the benefits too of your happy state just by hanging around. Be bold.

CANCER

June 21 - July 21

The planet Mars zips through your sign and makes quite an impact on others, let alone your own life! You get jobs done with lightning speed and others are impressed to say the least. You’ll also be verbally forthright and say just what you think. At times, this will be amusing. Just take some time out to recharge the batteries.

* *

LEO July 22 - August 22

When it comes to power, others seem to be holding all the cards and calling the shots all around you! At times, it’s all you can do to watch and follow the cues. However, you start to get inspired, as more energy crank-starts your hopes and dreams for the future. Others are happy to offer ideas and support too. Why not?

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

With many planets in opposition to your sign, you often feel outnumbered or overwhelmed at times! The key is to let others take the lead, make decisions for you and lead the way for a while at least. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the luxury of delegating matters to others and making sure that you get a wellearned rest. Hurrah!

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

Romance is on offer and is sparked by an intimate discussion. A journey could also link you two together. What fun! This makes up for some poor luck where your emotions are concerned over the last year or so. Work goes well when you find that you’re able to manifest your ideas much more easily, but it’s exhausting too.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21

Others seem to be out-witting and outperforming you all the time this month – especially on a practical level – but you still hold some powerful cards! Your charm and sophistication are going through the roof and you also have more stamina and tenacity than others at present, so these are your super powers.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 20

You’re making a great impact socially and others are sitting up and taking notice! You’re also prepared to take a risk and can get away with being quite zany at times. But practicalities aren’t your thing this month so be prepared to delay associated matters. Be courageous - and even outrageousand doors will open.

CAPRICORN Dec 21 - Jan 19

You come up with a fabulous idea for raising finance which leaves others standing! Yes, you’re leaving them behind as usual but that’s nothing new. You work hard and try to use your creativity to make an even better impression. Someone exciting is romantically attracted to you and you have fun together.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 17

You hold all the cards when it comes to knowing all the answers and are in a position to do something about them. You’re working hard for your money right now and yet are spending it on one or two whimsical fancies – why not? Your popularity starts to soar, with a feeling that you’re going to be lucky. You’re so right.

PISCES Feb 18 - March 19

You’ve been working so hard for just so long that it’s all a bit of an automatic routine. Yet you’ve a way of making it such fun, with building in your dreams and bringing in a sense of humour that others have certainly noticed! You’re also finding it easy to save your cash and making it work for you. Pisces –you’re no fool!

Another New Development for Syston

A resident sent us this piece about the proposed development, Barkby Fields adjacent to Barkby Road and Queniborough Road, Syston. See map below.

The resident sent the above photograph of the flooded field, see above, saying they had never seen that much water in the field and certainly not surrounding the large tree shown.

The house plan below shows a key to help understanding of the area and to relate to the photograph.

BLUE Arrow - Shows the place that the resident took the photo

RED - The Tree shown above.

BLACK Circle - the resident's area.

YELLOW Dot - the resident’s house

AQUA Circle - The Flood Area of the field that always floods.

Residents feel this needs looking at as where is all this water supposed

to go?

If it is to go into the existing Syston Waterways that are already and clearly unable cope as shown in the resident’s picture above of College Road, Syston.

Let alone other areas in Syston that are still recovering from 2nd January 2024 (Yes 12 months ago) floods. Then a more resilient system is needed, not just for Syston, but all surrounding villages that were affected in January 2025.

Building on farm land and flood plains needs reviewing urgently and provisions need to be put in place to protect existing properties, some now can’t get insurance, or sell their properties due to being flooded multiple times. These residents need to be listened to and all agencies and building firms need to work together to protect them from future damage. The following is the article provided by the resident who contacted the Stn, was written by the housebuilder. If you have comments please forward them CBC or LCC.

A housebuilder has revealed the full details of a 195-home estate that will be built on Leicestershire fields described as a "godsend". Taylor Wimpey will build the homes on fields off Barkby Road, in Syston, after a planning inspector ruled earlier this year that the development could go ahead.

The company has now submitted full details to Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) about the size and type of the houses planned for the land, of which 59 will be allocated for 'affordable' housing. If the latest plans are approved, the 16-acre site will include a “network of public open spaces”, around four acres of green space and an equipped play area, according to Taylor Wimpey.

There will be a mix of homes suitable for “families, couples, single residents, the elderly and residents with disabilities”, planning documents state. There will be four one-bedroom duplexes, 22 two-bedroom duplexes, 25 two-bedroom houses, 80 threebeds, 62 four-beds and two five-beds, they add.

Planning officers revealed last year that "matters around access and traffic had not been resolved", because CBC was waiting for the local highways authority, Leicestershire County Council, to say whether it was satisfied with the scheme. As a result, the application was not heard by the CBC's planning committee within Governmentmandated timescales, leading Taylor Wimpey to file the appeal.

In her written appeal decision, inspector Rekha Tabu said the homes would result in a loss of countryside that would “alter the open rural character of the site to an urban residential character”. But she said the homes, and the affordable properties included in the scheme, would contribute to helping with the “substantial shortfall of housing” in the UK, and that, overall, the adverse impacts of the scheme would not "significantly and demonstrably" outweigh its benefits.

The site has been allocated for housing in CBC's draft local plan. A local plan sets out where homes can be built in an area.

At a meeting of the planning committee last August, an agent from Pegasus Group, speaking on behalf of Taylor Wimpey, said the company's decision to take the application to appeal was not a reflection on the borough council, which, she said, had been "very fair and consistent throughout".

New Community Hospital to Open in Loughborough

CHEC Loughborough is set to reduce NHS waiting times and increase patient choice

CHEC, one of the UK’s leading providers of community healthcare, has confirmed it will be opening a new Loughborough hospital in March 2025.

Based in central Loughborough, the conveniently located facility will help reduce NHS waiting times and increase patient choice by providing access to ophthalmology, dermatology, and ENT services in the community.

The new hospital will be located at The Rushes in Loughborough town centre. With excellent public transport links and nearby parking, CHEC is currently fitting out its new location into a state-of-the-art clinical facility. Working with the NHS, CHEC has more than 30 community hospitals and 90 community clinics nationwide. The addition of CHEC Loughborough strengthens its existing East Midlands stronghold which already includes Leicester and Nottingham.

“Patient choice, exceptional care and equity of access are central to CHEC’s ethos, which is why we’re proud to collaborate with the NHS nationwide, helping to keep waiting times to a minimum while delivering the very best quality of care,” explains Jose Bailey, Chief Commercial Officer at CHEC.

“For well over a decade, we’ve been trusted by the NHS to deliver healthcare services free of charge, and we can’t wait to open our doors and become part of the Loughborough community. In the meantime, we’d welcome any residents to get in touch and learn more about how we work with the NHS to make much-needed treatments more readily accessible.” Upon opening, treatments in both specialties will be within four weeks of receipt of referral. Mother’s Day 27th March

insurance with your head spinning in a circle is something else, it makes you feel physically sick, mentally it’s soul destroying. They mean well but living with family and friends isn’t a long term solution for anyone’s wellbeing and sadly this article won’t even be seen by some of the usual readers!

Heartbreaking!

Our hearts go out to those of you traumatised by events on Monday 6th of January, like us you may have been woken by volunteer flood wardens or neighbours hammering on your door, then to see a torrent of water pouring at speed from our antiquated drainage system, before finally Barkby Brook could hold no more, did it’s worst, broke bank and ruined homes and businesses!

gets routed by man-made culverts (drains) at speed towards Barkby Brook ripping the heart out of Syston when these freak storms hit.

‘Flood Hit Residents’ The views and opinions expressed on our Letters page are those of the respective authors and do not reflect the opinion of the Syston Town News.

Please note: The opinions expressed in the letters printed do not reflect the views of Send your letters

Some of you in houses are coming to terms with ‘living upstairs’ again whilst those monstrous machines roar taking moisture out of your damaged homes, residents in bungalows are ‘homeless’, and after watching in total disbelief the chaos in January 2024 we now feel your pain ‘we are, like you, flood victims and homeless to’..!

Rental properties are snapped up without this added surge, trying to understand rentals and your home

The system is broken, the council authorities for a multitude of reasons past and present have failed us, they predicted 20+ years ago that flooding may happen in certain areas if no investment was made to adequately maintain the brook and importantly ‘slow the flow’ (don’t forget to throw in the predicted climate change, back then they knew)! In our opinion Syston just wasn’t important enough to receive their funding, instead they handed over a chunk of responsibility to the EA and promptly forgot their responsibilities to us the ratepayers! They took the cheaper option whilst approving more new builds up stream, more ratepayers equals more income for the council authorities! This rant is not aimed at people who bought those new-builds, you need homes to, you bought in good faith, it’s aimed at the system, the once green fields that now sit predominantly under tarmac so the rainfall runs off not soaks into the ground, it collects nicely in those newly built drains, then intentionally

It’s also been sad to read that a senior member of our borough council isn’t “familiar with the brook and it being passed to the EA to monitor”… granted they wouldn’t have been employed all those years ago (as said above, its not personal) but surely after events in January 2024 they would have made it a priority to be up to speed by January 2025?

To all our council authorities please tell us ‘what you’ve done to actually alleviate the flood risk in Syston’ over these years, we question what you’ve spent our money on!

Lastly, to those in all three council authorities telling residents to ‘Be Prepared’ you haven’t actually got a Clue, where were ‘You’ on January 6th, feel free to enlighten us, because we’re not the only residents asking!

Green Councillors Report

Big changes are happening to local councils, but many people don’t know about it. Across England, the government is planning to reorganise local councils. This will change how they are set up and could affect the way services are provided and how decisions are made. As your councillors, we think it’s important to share our concerns and explain how these changes might affect our area. First, we want to be clear that we don’t support this reorganisation. We fear that down the line, it could mean council tax hikes, chaos to services, Mayors who can make sweeping decisions over local planning and parts of the County given away to the City. It seems like the government is rushing this through without asking the community what they think. People should have the chance to give their opinions, and that’s not happening right now.

We are worried about the focus on creating big ‘super councils’ instead of fixing the real problems we face. The problem isn’t whether we have Borough, County, or Unitary councils. The problem is that councils aren’t getting enough money to meet the needs of local people, and social care is in a crisis. Unless these

issues are fixed, we don’t see how making councils even bigger will help. In fact, we fear it could make things worse.

The government has not shown any proof that this change will save money or work better. In fact, the uncertainty it will cause could harm local services for years to come. The government says this plan will give people more say in their local areas, but we don’t see how creating huge councils led by a Mayor who will have vast powers, will achieve that.

Bigger councils might help in some areas, but they could also make it harder for our voices to be heard, as decisions will be made farther away from us. For towns like ours, this change will likely affect how services are managed and how much say we have in local decisions.

We will keep fighting for our area and make sure your concerns are heard. Over the next few months, we will keep you updated about what’s happening.

Our main goal is to make sure any changes are thought through carefully and that our town’s needs are properly looked after.

Joint Statement by Leaders of the District and Borough Councils in Leicestershire

Leaders of the seven district and borough councils in Leicestershire have issued a statement following the Government’s confirmation that the county council elections in Leicestershire will go ahead in May and the area is not part of the English Devolution Priority programme.

The council leaders said in a joint statement: “We welcome the Government’s decision to continue with the county council elections this year.

“This provides a more achievable timetable to develop proposals for a future local government structure for Leicestershire and Rutland.

“Importantly, it provides more time to engage and consult with our communities about how we move forward. Your voice must be heard in this process.

“Our communities are at the forefront of our minds when planning how best to deliver services in the future, not only to make sure they feel connected and able to influence those decisions, but also retain a sense of pride in the places they live

and work. That is clearly important to people.

“It will also provide more time to gather the evidence to support our proposals which we are confident will deliver savings to ensure funding is channelled towards frontline services. The district councils are working together on these plans.

“We have already made it clear that we have grave concerns over Leicestershire County Council’s proposals for a single unitary council for Leicestershire. With a population of around 750,000 people and 800square miles of countryside including many towns and villages, it would be one of the biggest unitary authorities in the country. This would be too remote, too cumbersome and inaccessible, from the communities we serve.

“For the sake of our communities, we must keep the local in local government.”

Types of Council

With the proposed changes in the two tier system in Leicestershire, we thought it would be useful for readers to understand what our local councils currently provide. The information is taken from the governments guide and relates to councils in England. Many parts of England have two tiers

of local government:

 county councils

 district, borough or city councils

In some parts of the country, there’s just one (unitary) tier of local government providing all the local services.

The three main types are:

 Unitary authorities in shire areas

 London boroughs

 Metropolitan boroughs

County councils

These are responsible for services across the whole of a county, like:

 education

 transport

 planning

 fire and public safety

 social care

 libraries

 waste management

 trading standards

District, borough and city councils

These cover a smaller area than county councils. They’re usually responsible for services like:

 rubbish collection

 recycling

 Council Tax collections

 housing

 planning applications

In some parts of the country, one tier

Food Served:

of local government provides all the local services listed above.

Parish, community and town councils

These operate at a level below district and borough councils and in some cases, unitary authorities. They are elected and can help on a number of local issues, like providing:

 allotments

 public clocks

 bus shelters

 community centres

 play areas and play equipment

 grants to help local organisations

 consultation on neighbourhood planning

They also have the power to issue fixed penalty fines for things like:

 litter

 graffiti

 fly posting

 dog offences

Looking at annual accounts

Every year councils must open their detailed financial accounts to the public for 30 working days. This allows you to check any spending under £500 without having tomake a freedom of information request. Your council must publish on its website and in the local press details of when you can check its accounts.

‘We’re planning a summer getaway to Greece and I’m worried we’ll forget something important which could ruin the holiday. What steps can we take to make sure we’re fully protected and prepared if anything goes wrong?’

Booking a holiday can be overwhelming, especially if it’s been a while since you last went away. It’s unlikely anything will go wrong, but we’ve prepared a simple checklist to make sure you can relax into your holiday knowing you’re protected from the unexpected.

Check your passport is in dateespecially for EU travel

Renewing your passport can take several weeks and isn’t something to leave until the last minute. Check the validity of your passport for your trip on GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/ browse/abroad/passports) by finding out the entry requirements of the country you’re travelling to. If you’re heading to Europe, bear in mind EU countries don’t accept passports more than ten years old. This includes passports issued preBrexit which may have longer expiry dates. Just remember, the golden rule for EU travel is: if your passport was issued over ten years ago you’ll need to get it renewed.

Know your rights if something goes wrong

If your flight’s delayed long enoughusually two to four hours depending on the journey - your airline must provide access to food and drink vouchers, phone calls and emails, and accommodation if you’re delayed overnight. If it’s cancelled, you’re legally entitled to a full refund or replacement flight to help you get to your destination. You’re also entitled

to compensation if your airline delays, loses or damages your checked-in luggage. Get travel insurance

Although it’s an extra expense, travel insurance can cover many of the things already mentioned, like flight delays and lost luggage, but also things like a holiday cancellation and medical emergencies.

Citizens Advice recommends getting insurance as soon as you book a holiday to make sure you're covered right away - but always check first to see if an existing insurance policy, or your bank account, covers what you need for your holiday. There’s no need to double up if you’re already covered!

The chances are your holiday will be problem-free, but early planning and preparation can make all the difference. If you need advice on a consumer problem head to the Citizens Advice website - https:// www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/ or contact our local enquiry line and ask to speak to one of our Advisers.
