SYSTON TOWN NEWS

On Wednesday 13th March, Age UK had a special celebration soiree to open their new Age UK Bookshop at 1306, The Old Bookshop, Melton Road, Syston.
I took a trip down to this event so I could check out what this new bookstore had to offer. It was such a delight to see a new bookstore back in Syston and last time we had a bookstore here, I was only a little girl. The outside looks beautiful and upon
walking into the bookshop, there is a slight rustic aesthetic which is very pleasing to the eye.
On entry, there was an option to have a small glass of fizz and a cake whilst browsing around the shelves of many books, which have all been donated to Age UK. Everyone also had the pleasure of enjoying the musical talents of the Syston Happy Ukulele Band, pictured bottom left.
There is a wide variety of genre and there really is something there for everyone, from children’s books and young adult fiction; to educational study books and home cookbooks. There is no limit to what can be found in the bookshop and the selection is amazing. I myself will be keeping an eye out for the classic literature on the shelves.
The counter has been beautifully designed with the spines of old books to add more of a rustic bookshop feeling.
I went to have a chat with the Head of Retail of Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland, Nicola Norris and talked to her in more depth about this bookstore and how she and her team brought back the beauty of a bookstore into our town.
“We’ve been looking at opportunities of opening more shops and I know Syston well, because the wonderful Natalie runs the shop down the road. This unit became available, I saw the signs on the outside, so I went to Tony and said this is the perfect opportunity for opening a second shop in syston which I’ve been trying to do for a while. Then we saw the old bookshop sign above it and thought, it needs to be a Bookshop.”
Natalie, Who runs the Age UK store further into the town, mentioned that herself and Nicola had even been in contact with the founder of the original Bookshop.
“Eric Vardy actually contacted Nicola and myself just to say, I’m so proud to have it back to Syston”
Natalie has even had an influx of interest from people wanting to volunteer

Welcome to Debs Woof Pack - Dog Walking Services.
My name is Debbie and I have just started up a professional dog walking business.
I cover clients living in the areas of Syston, Queniborough, East Goscote and Rearsby.
Luckily for us we live in the beautiful Charnwood countryside, where we are surrounded by an abundance of field walks for your dogs to explore, sniff and play!
The aim is to walk in small groups of dogs for socialisation, fun and adventures.
I will take care of your dogs with the same love, care and devotion as I give to my own dogs.
I currently own Maggie who is a nine year old Cockerpoo and loves to chase a ball.
I also own Eric who we have rescued out of Cyprus. He is a pointer cross and had a hard life before he came to us. He is full of scars and all he wants is lots of cuddles and food!
I am fully DBS checked and insured. Dogs will be transported safely and comfortably in animal transit crates that have rear escape hatches for extra piece of mind should the need arise.
The one hour walk will commence once we reach our walking destination. Travel time is not incorporated into our hour of fun!
For those occasions where we have gotten muddy I clean your dogs down with a Mud Daddy, which is a soft bristled round brush on the end of an attachment, using warm fresh water, followed by a towel dry.
My page can be found on Facebook and Instagram under Debs Woof Pack.
I have received the following review from a lady who uses my service: ‘I would highly recommend Debbie’s
dog walks.
I have ill health at the moment and I don’t know how I would manage without her.
My dog Jude loves going and is happy with her lovely walks. Debbie is very kind to her she is a friendly happy person who puts the dogs welfare first.
I always know Jude will enjoy her walk and be safe andhappy.’ Sue.

and
Nicola then went on to talk more about the bookshop itself as well as what the opportunity means to Age UK and what it means to Syston.
She said: “When people buy a book from us, all of that money stays local. It goes into Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland, so it stays within the county. Then we are asking people, when they finish reading the book, to re-donate it so the book gets recycled again and someone else can read it.
We will provide services here too, so we’ll be an information service for Age UK and then people can come in and talk to us and find out what Age UK does locally which is great.”
We even had a discussion on how long it took for them to get from the initial idea to the opening of the shop and I am honestly baffled at how quick everything came about for the bookshop.
Nicola continued: “The initial idea, was probably about two months. I said to Tony I really want to have this bookshop because I love the outside of it.”
Nicola’s final comments were that she hopes the bookstore will be the first place people think of if anyone needs or wants a book. She has some very high hopes for this bookshop and I agree with her that it is definitely a shop that Syston needs in the community. Sometimes you just can’t beat a good book!
The bookshop officially opened on the 14th March and will be open at the following times:
Monday to Saturday - 9.00am to 4.00pm
Sunday - 11.00am to 4.00pm

Dear Editor,
Having received our council tax bill for 2024/25.
Why are Syston Town Council getting a 9.7% increase in Council Tax when Charnwood Council are only getting 3%?
Whenever you say anything about what people want in Syston, the answer is always the same; go to Charnwood Council; or the Council says that they have to go to Charnwood Council for an answer. Charnwood Council have offices in Loughborough with staff to help, Syston Council have an office in the community centre but no help from staff.
Charnwood Council have people on hand at the offices to listen and help you out. The biggest problem is that Syston Council have no authority in what happens to Syston, as they keep telling us.
I feel the tax for Syston should be a lot lower than Charnwood Councils Tax.
A Concerned Resident, Syston.

All systems go – well, that’s how it should be this time of year! The days are thankfully getting longer and there’s an awful lot to be done, but we must remember the seeds that are set now will hopefully supply uswith fresh vegetables throughout the year. Something I love to see are the first tender shoots of rhubarb which should now be ready for the first crumble, just lovely.
The Allotment is coming to life but sadly this also means the weeds are coming to life so regular hoeing must start now and will continue throughout the year; with the war on bugs and pests also beginning.
for a 60L bag and mixed with my own riddled compost seems to be a good compromise and so far everything is going quite well.
The broad beans that I planted over a month ago are only just coming through the soil, when they’re tender, young shoots just poking through is when the pea & bean weevil normally attacks them so I’ll be giving them a spray ofneem oil and I’ll let you know if it deters the blighters, I’m a bit late putting the peas in so thinking I’ll be doing that after writing this.
Towards the end of this month I’ll be putting my potatoes in. It’s always a bit of a gamble choosing the right time …… the fatal mistake is when you see somebody else put theirs in, you automatically feel you’re to follow suit - and this can be a mistake.
Potatoes don’t want to be poking their heads through the soil until Jack Frost has gone. I was always told if they get frosted it halves your harvest. I don’t know whether there’s any truth in that but I always do my best to try and avoid them getting frosted.

I have purchased for the first time a product called neem oil. I’ve heard quite good reports of this natural product so we will see - you mix a tablespoon along with a little squirt of washing up liquid into a 1 L bottle of water and spray to keep the bugs away……I’ll let you know if and how effective it is.
I emptiedone of my compost bins last week onto the plot just to put something back. First of all, I riddled enough to get a couple of compost bags full of quite fine compost that I will use mixed with some bought for setting seeds etc. For me compost has been a problem since we stopped using peat, an awful lot of it is now not only rubbish - it’s expensive rubbish. I’ve been buying compost called Jack’s Magic when it’s on offer, the last lot was only £5
Young seedlings of cauliflower, cabbage, brussels, beetroot etc. are all in the greenhouse and will soon be big enough to be planted out in the allotment. Carrots are already in, they are grown in large tubs to try and deter the carrot fly, they’re just starting to poke their heads above the compost.
I love this time of year. I hope it’s gonna be a great year for you all! Richard Thorpe Syston Allotments 15b

Cash Access UK, the organisation set up to protect nationwide access to cash, has confirmed today that the Banking Hub in Syston has moved from its temporary home at Syston Community Centre to a new permanent location.
The Hub is now open at 1262 Melton Road, the former Santander premises, and was officially opened on Friday 23rd February at 11.00am.
The Hub will continue to offer a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. It will also offer a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the Hub. Community Bankers will work on rotation, with a different bank available on each day of the week:
Monday: Santander
Tuesday: NatWest
Wednesday: Lloyds
Thursday: HSBC
Friday: Barclays
The temporary Banking Hub was opened in September 2023 and, because the permanent has opened, is now closed.
Gareth Oakley, CEO, Cash Access UK: “Our temporary hub in Syston has been well received by local residents and businesses, and we are delighted to now open the doors of our permanent Banking Hub. It will play an important role in maintaining access to cash and banking services for the local community. I would like to thank the Town Council for their support in hosting the temporary Hub and we look forward to welcoming customers in our new home.”
Rt Hon Edward Argar, MP for Charnwood: “The opening of the Banking Hub in Syston last year wasgreat news for local residents, businesses, and for a great town and nearby villages, so it’s fantastic to see it move from its temporary base into the heart of the town, among the shops on Melton Road.
As Syston's local MP I have been working with Syston Town Council (STC) and many others since 2021 to secure a banking hub for the town,so it’s fantastic to see it delivered and now in a permanent home."
Catherine Voyce, Town Manager for Syston: “Syston Town Council is delighted that Cash Access UK is opening a permanent Banking Hub in the town. Since the temporary Hub opened last year it has been a lifeline for locals, and its permanent location will be even better.”

widely understood, with many present on the day confessing that they had no idea that such a post existed. Memories of the legendary Sheriff of Nottingham, and his battles with Robin Hood, came to mind.
At the conclusion of the Centre’s monthly Community Lunch at Beedles Lake Golf Club, Paul Lomas, Chairman of Syston and District Volunteer Centre, was taken by surprise as he was presented with the High Sheriff of Leicestershire’s personal award for outstanding voluntary Community service, see our picture below.
The current High Sheriff, Mrs Henrietta Chubb JP, an imposing figure in her long line navy buttonthrough tunic, broad-brimmed hat with white ostrich feather, spoke of Paul’s wide range of voluntary work within the local Syston Community which had stimulated the special Award. She was accompanied at the event by Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Murray Colville.
The role of the High Sheriff is not
The modern County Sheriff’s principal role, as defined by the oath of office, is to “faithfully support the judiciary and all who maintain the King’s peace, administer justice and protect and support their fellow citizens” including the police and other law enforcement agencies, the emergency services, local authorities, and church and faith groups. The role is unpaid and no expenses are reimbursed. For this reason, there is no set framework of duties and each of the current 55 modern High Sheriffs is encouraged to shape the year of office as he/she sees fit.
During her year in office, Henrietta has chosen to concentrate on offering encouragement to those supporting the charitable and voluntary sectorsparticularly those involved with crime reduction and social cohesion - and actively encouraging crime prevention.
The origins of the Office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the Sovereign for the maintenance of law and order within the shire or county and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown.

Team 3G, Maureen, Rachael and Faith,
In my last moan I wrote about the voting issue without Photo ID.
Well on Tuesday 27th February on Radio 4 the programme was talking about voting for visually impaired people, but it also spoke about my moan for those of you who do not have photo ID.
Well it seems you can apply to your local authority for a voting Authority Certificate form.
You will need to prove your name and address and National Insurance Number a photo and of course you can still vote by post. You can phone the Election team on 01509 634 546
are off on their virtual travels again. As it has not been possible to organise the ‘From Classics to Jazz’ concert this year because of Rachael’s playing commitments in Hull, Maureen and Rachael will virtually pedal the ‘The North Coast 500’ – 516 miles round the coast of Scotland starting at Inverness and travelling clockwise.
The scenery is spectacular on this journey so their imaginations will have to run riot! Faith, who is now 10, is joining them and again will walk / cycle 100 miles, the distance between where she lives in Hull and the LOROS hospice, although she thinks she might be able to go further this time! As before her travels will be tracked on the phone.

However, you have to apply for this by 5pm on 25th April 2024 in time for the local elections on 2nd May. I hope this is helpful for you, because I didn’t know and possibly you didn’t either.
I also wrote about the Banking Hub which was finally opened on Friday 23rd February and was covered in the last issue. I hope some of you have had time to use the facilities.

They hope that as many people as possible will support them again in their fundraising efforts for LOROS, a cause which will always remain close to their hearts.
Donations may be made via their Team 3G JustGiving page https://www. justgiving.com/page/rachael-dixon1710438134018 or to Fiona at Syston Town News, 55 Goodes Lane, Syston (cheques payable to LOROS).
Because of the type of Banking system operated there it is a little restricted, but I have been reliably informed by a Bank employee who said things will improve as time goes by I do hope so.
There has been a lot of talk about the flooding in the town and was very well covered in the last issue of STN I think it is a problem in many parts of the country. Bewdley on the River Severn, also York have suffered and now have flood barriers to prevent flooding and it seems we need a similar system.

It’s April, and things are finally hotting up (or getting wetter depending on what nature has in store for us!).
March was a busy month; we held our second AGM at the Pharmacie Arms, where we updated attendees on what we accomplished in 2023 and what we plan for this year. It was lovely to see the interest in community gardening growing. We have made a start clearing our allotment plot and getting ready for planting – we’re plot 73B – stop and say hello if we’re there! Thank you to Syston Town Council for their help with the clear up.
We have made significant progress at Scotia Press – the before and after photos above show how much effort has been put in to clearing the beds ready to create a growing space for edible produce. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far, and to Scotia Press for the hot drinks and rubbish disposal!
April sees the launch of our Big Spring Raffle! We already have prize donations from local businesses Delish and Papermoon; keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page for prize updates and details of how to buy your tickets. All proceeds go towards developing the growing spaces Grow Give Live maintain in Syston, which are all created to provide edible produce for the community. Last year, our planters at the community centre had a bumper crop of strawberries, cucumbers and tomatoes; it was great to see folks taking the ripe produce for a snack or to add to a meal (remember to
wash it first!).
This year, we have more growing space, to produce more fruit and veg for the community; if you would like to be a part of what we’re growing, please get in touch on growgivelivesyston@gmail.com, and follow our Facebook page facebook. com/growgivelive/
I hope you all had a good Easter and that the Easter bunny was good to you.
I have a few apologies to make, firstly that the chapel was closed all through St Valentines week.
Secondly, Mothering Sunday weekend where we still had the cold; unreal, with LED candles in place of the living tea lights, to dedicate to your loved ones and for your reflections.
The friends of Syston cemetery have battled hard to get the tea lights reinstalled since Christmas for you. They were deemed to be unsafe when nobody was on in the grounds. Subsequently we had to wait for a special smoke alarm to be installed. When that arrived and came to be fitted, on the 9th of March, it resulted in further problems. I am so sorry for you all, hopefully though, by the time this comes to print, tea lights will be reinstalled in our beautiful chapel for you to use, just as they are used in all other churches in the country.
I also hope that by the time this goes to print you will see our newly installed letterbox to heaven. Here you write a letter to your loved ones. Please place the letter in an envelope and post it in the box, ‘No Stamp Needed’.
As usual, I hope you enjoyed all of the March displays. Again, if you wish to plant a rose tree, or to hire the chapel, please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council via 0116 260 7150.
Take care everyone Love Ros. x

The plot is thickening down at Syston QT Theatre Group, and we have extra details to reveal…
…Firstly, our cast and crew now really look the part thanks to the kind donation from Second Time Around in Syston last September. Part of the £400 we received has gone towards kitting us out in some branded clothing. Here are a few of us modelling the new polo shirts that EG Clothing in Barrow Upon Soar have produced for us. We’ve also had some
hoodies made, which will keep us nice and toasty in rehearsals until the warmer weather comes along! Thanks again to Second Time Around for their generous donation and to EG Clothing for a super job done on our new QT kit – we’re certainly dressed to kill for our upcoming thriller comedy plays!
Which leads us nicely on to our second bit of news to share, rehearsals are in full flow for our May Mysteries - ‘Bang You’re Dead!’ by Paul Reakes, and ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ by Leigh White. There’s been a twist to the tale since last month though…the part previously advertised in ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ as ‘Trevor’ and played by Jack Marlowe will now take the form of ‘Trisha’ and will be performed by Jo Gallagher. For a sneaky peak of what the plays are all about head to our website. In the meantime, here is a snapshot of the action going down so far.
Our final revelation is that we’re thrilled to announce that show tickets are now available! And for the first time in Syston QT Theatre Group’s history, you’re now able to book your tickets online from our website! So, it’s even easier to make sure you don’t miss any of our shows.

On Monday 11th March your editor attended a TEAMS video meeting with the Environment Agency (EA) along other members of the public who are on the Syston Flood Focus group, Syston Town Councillors and the Town Manager.
David Towle from the EA gave a presentation explaining their role and how they have taken over the monitoring of the Barkby Brook since it was designated a Main River in 2006 from Deville Park through the town to where it meets the River Wreake. The reason given was due to the 25km2 of mainly farm land run off that goes into the Barkby Brook above Syston. He also confirmed about the role of riparian owners, Local lead flood authority Leicestershire County Council, who also have permissive powers like the EA to clear watercourses, that aren’t main rivers. He added that Seven Trent and Highways are risk management authorities and work together.
He emphasised that any problems seen by the public should be reported to the EA and gave the details below:

He said the level of flooding that was caused by storms Henk and Babet affected a huge area and was the worst seen in the East Midlands since1947.
He also confirmed that the de-silting will take place during the financial year 2024/25 and that the river level gauge will be ungraded before the end of the calendar year.
Future plans will be guided by the information gained at the drop in held in Syston on 20th March, where they plan to collect evidence from those affected by the floods. There will be a property flood resilience grant available via Leicestershire County Council, plus ongoing maintenance.
Questions asked after his presentation included one about whether or not the EA took over Riparian ownership to which he replied no, they just transferred the permissive powers from Charnwood Borough Council to the EA. He was asked about the build up of silt and he said that they would bring answers to that question to the drop in - so hopefully next issue we can update you. It was questioned as to whether the monthly inspections actually took place as residents present have never seen anyone in the brook checking it.
We will continue to up date you all, one update is that the Stn received a reply to our question about the sluice gates, we can confirm that these are owned by the Canals and Rivers trust, they are only used to maintain the weir, they said they have never been asked to open them to relieve flooding in Syston.
We hope that after all these investigations, the agencies will work together to put the Barkby brook back to the condition it was in 2004 and maintain it to avoid any future flooding of homes in Syston.

ARIES March 21 - April 19
With the Sun moving through your sign this month, not only is it ‘birthday' time but expect light to be thrown on a long term issue, solving something painful for you. Your willingness to communicate and discuss matters puts you into a decidedly advantageous position. The new moon in your sign heralds new beginnings.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
With the expansive planet Jupiter currently moving through your sign, no one can keep up with you especially when it links to the genius planet Uranus also in for a long-term stay with you. In business, you're formidable and socially you're quite the dapper charmer! As Mercury joins in, you start to open up more and share.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
You may be forgiven for feeling exhausted and overwhelmed at times with so much planetary activity in your career and social areas of your life! Work is relentless and you're really having to dig deep in order to deal with problems and come out on top. Some acquaintance brings up an old issue which is tiresome but needs sorting.
CANCER June 21 - July 22
You're starting to analyse others quite accurately and some of your own insights amaze even you! This will start to transform your connection with them and they start to see a different side to you too. You’re inspired to conduct some research or study that gives you an advantage although work continues to be challenging.
LEO July 23 - August 22
A partner is grappling with some deeprooted problems and realisations and although this is tiring, they will in fact throw some interesting light on your own problems. Friends generally all seem to have problems of one sort or another, which is demanding and you have an issue yourself linked to knowledge and study. Keep trying.
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22
You're doing a good deal of work trying to understand others and to see life from their point of view. This is very helpful to you personally and you give others space to find their own way and to be themselves. Partners are particularly warm and loving right now and this is reassuring.A friend struggles with childhood wounds.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
The new moon in your opposite sign of Aries this month links to a new friendship that is expected to naturally blossom and grow. This brings up memories of some previous wounds yet you are destined to purge this from your soul for once and for all. Problems at work are nevertheless enjoyably absorbing and challenging.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21
Life continues to teach you lessons in its masterclass and this is developing you beyond belief so start to have more faith in yourself and in your abilities! Work is difficult as old wounds reemerge, demanding that you find a new way of dealing with them. You solve these by openly discussing issues and hitting them head-on.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21
You are learning from recent developments that link to past issues. It's almost a recurring pattern that you are observing! The aim is to be more aware and to get more control over things and only then can you move forward. Your domestic world is also hard going and demands lots of hard labour. Keep going.
CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19
You begin to understand your financial position more fully and to appreciate the potential clout that it can muster! This has the ability to transform your life in a way that you can only just start to appreciate. The daily routine keeps on throwing up one problem or another and family is stuck in old patterns. Sigh.
AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18
With Pluto more firmly in your sign now, expect to be made more aware of your own personal power although the lessons that you are learning also make you uncertain and humble. Your finances continue to present problems and need sorting out. The daily routine has become stuck with old habits and needs a good shake up.
PISCES Feb 19 - March 20
You work hard on practical tasks and find much energy and stamina to keep on going! Romantic thoughts dominate your mind when someone takes you by surprise. And now you can't stop dreaming. You could do with discussing some long-standing financial issue with others before you are able to move on.

Age Concern Syston celebrates after receiving £16k from Severn Trent Community Fund to help provide support for our local elderly community.
Based in Syston’s High Street, for over 40 years Age Concern Syston has been helping hundreds of our local elderly residents from all over Syston, East Goscote, Queniborough, Barkby, Rearsby and Cossington each and every year.
Thanks to a £16,250 grant from Severn Trent Community Fund’s recent Core funding stream, the charity has had a kickstart in securing some of the necessary funding to keep this vital service running.
Staffed by four part-time staff and a group of 20+ dedicated volunteers, Age Concern Syston provide an information and advice service as well as four regular social activity groups and transport assistance - supporting those that are housebound or socially isolated with a reasonably priced hot meal, opportunity to leave their homes and enjoy friendly company.
The activities on offer all support the physical and good mental health of our elderly community. Including, sing along sessions, art classes, exercise classes, craft sessions and guest speakers all for the price of a cup of coffee.
The funding from the Severn Trent Community Fund: Core funding, which awards grant money to groups that run for the benefit of local residents, supporting those most vulnerable – will go a long way to supporting Age Concern Syston in continuing to provide a valuable service to the elderly community for the next 12 months.
Jennie Angell, Chair of Age Concern Syston says: “We’re delighted that the Severn Trent Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. We’re thankful for the funding so that we’ll be able to continue our valued support for the elderly community of Syston and surrounding villages.”
Sue Heyes, Community Fund Officer at Severn Trent, said: “We’re really proud to support the invaluable work of Age Concern Syston and help them continue the brilliant support they provide. We have two support streams for charities at Severn Trent Community Fund. Our new project funding is open all year around and Core Funding will re-open for applications in summer. If your group is interested in finding out more, please do get in touch at communityfund@severntrent.co.uk.“

Shirley Franklin, President, welcomed New Barkby members, plus a visitor to the institute's March meeting.
After ‘Jerusalem’ was sung, there were business matters discussed. The speaker was Geoff Harris on ‘Folklore, Folk Tales and Funny Folk.’ There were many examples of old traditions and antiquated laws which may still exist but not carried out. A ‘Curfew’, originally, was instituted by William the conqueror at 8.00pm with the ringing of a bell for people to damper their fires and then retire to bed.
A bell, signifying this, is still rung at the tower of London.
A very entertaining and informative talk.
Vice president, Jean Brutnall, gave the vote of thanks and won the competition with a favourite saying, ‘Yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery.’
Some social time with refreshments, followed the talk.
The raffle was won by Eileen Hull.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, 3rd April at 7.30pm at the Syston Community Centre with speaker, Philippa Guy, ‘a colourful new you’ (postponed from January)
All are welcome to attend.
The whole of the process of selling the house from initial quote to completion was dealt with in a professional and efficient way. Paul was always available when I rang him and Paulakept us updated on a weekly basisonce an offer had been made. I feel that HomeMove were there to take a lot of the stressesaway.
Find the sheep!
The March Families @ 4 session took on a caring theme, based around the parable of the Lost Sheep, Luke 15, 3-7. Reverend Ros used her interactive story box treasures to tell the story, followed by a song and 'cotton wool' prayers, which helped families explore the idea of God caring for us - even when we feel we are lost. Creative cards were made to thank those that care for us and a fun game of 'hide the sheep' came after indulging in a range of delicious homemade cakes!
We hope you can join us at our next Families @ 4 session on Sunday April 14th at 4pm in the Church Hall.
Mothering Sunday Service
A service to remember those who nurtured us through childhood, and also remember Mary the Mother of God and our mother the church.
Everyone was given a small Viola plant to take home and care for.
The service was followed by refreshments in the hall.
Together Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday was a riot of flour, eggs, milk and lots and lots of yummy toppings. A pancake party with an international flavour as we journeyed together to far flung destinations (for those of us who knew where they were!) in a quiz organised by Pierre.
The Divine infant of Prague the Roman Catholic Church hosted the Churches Together in Syston annual event. All generations joined forces in teams, fun was had by all, and we raised a small amount of money for funds. Monica, Wendy and Josie cooked dozens of pancakes, allowing us to prepare and progress into Lent, where we try and live simpler lives while thinking about Jesus’s journey to Good Friday.
World Day of Prayer
This service always takes place on the first Friday in March. This year on 1st March we met in the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Prague in Broad Street. It was a poignant
service because this year the service had been created by the Christian Women of Palestine, the land in which Jesus was born, ministered and died. The women would have done this quite some time ago to allow for publication and there was no news of them since the end of last year.
After the service there was time for refreshments and fellowship.
Lent Preparation
During Lent three groups of members of the congregations of The Methodist Church, St Peter and St Paul’s Church of England Church and the Divine Infant of Prague, Roman Catholic Church met once a week to read and discuss the book Things He Did by, Archbishop of York, Reverend Stephen Cottrell. Each chapter took an event in Holy Week to consider. The text was written as in the style of a novel.
