BABTAG - Proposed Houses Around Syston
It has been a relatively quiet time for the last few months on the housing development front but the pace is now picking up. There is now a planning consultation application from Taylor Wimpey for the 960 houses HA1 Land South East of Syston complete with Masterplan for the development. (planning application P/24/0975/2)
We’ve also had the details of the Charnwood 5 year housing supply which manages to reach its target without including any houses from the probable sites close to Barkby identified for development in the “emerging” Charnwood Local Plan. There has been an offer to meet the parish council by Jelsons concerning the HA8 former Woodgate Nurseries site, and a mystery planning application regarding land west of Hilltop Road on what must be the site of the proposed southern link road from the Leicester ring road into Thorpebury. This is so bound in confidentiality that rumours will soon start circulating.
However not everything is moving. Despite everything being agreed between the authorities and the builders, there is still no date for the road closure on Hamilton Lane to allow the two new access roads into Thorpebury to be built and no safety improvements on Barkby thorpe

Wimpey has included aglossy Masterplan for the south of Syston HA1. (See map below) It purports to have paid attention to the concerns and objectives of local people who attended consultation workshops in October 2022. This has resulted in the concentration of much of the new housing on the Syston fringe and the creation of a wooded buffer on the north side of Barkby Lane and of a sizeable green park alongside the Barkby brook.
However many questions still demand answers not least because many local people in the consultation made it abundantly clear that they did not want the development in any form believing that the 4500 house of Thorpebury were more than enough for the area.

Continued from Front Page
Negative impacts of the scheme.
1 Rural to Suburbia. No wide wooded buffer is declared alongside the proposed housing on the west side of the Queniborough Road but a narrow strip of allotments over which the houses will be highly visible thus suburbanisng what is currently a rural road into into Barkby. Also, inevitably the area of separation/green wedge is substantially reduced by the housing estates which the developers claim could accommodate even more than the 960 houses of the Charnwood Local Plan.
2 Traffic. The plan underplays the proximity of the Thorpebury development on the south side of Barkby Lane and does not really address thehuge burden of traffic these two major developments will impose on Barkby Lane and Queniborough Road which will each have accesses onto the south-east of Syston estates.
3 Flooding risk. The plan estimates that only 27 hectares out of 64 are at risk of flooding and appears to
underestimate the risk of climate change by building on the flood plain.
4 Loss of prime agricultural land. The plan casually accepts it will be building on valuablegrade 2 agricultural land when such rich land is vital for food security.
5. Pressure on local services. The plan does not fully address the pressure on local services providing only for a single shop and a single school on site.
6 Need for the houses? Whilst the HA1 site features in the ‘emerging’ Charnwood Local Plan it does not appear in the sites contributing to the current 5 year housing supply. There is surely then time to assess whether a development of this scale is needed in the 2030s and 40s?

General Election Results for Melton and Syston

 Misted &

On 4th July, the Nation went to the polls and Stn along with other local and national media, attended the count in Melton Mowbray. It was interesting to view the process in action, it takes a lot of people and organisation to verify and then count all the voting papers that arrived from all the voting stations across this new constituency. As we reported last month, Syston has moved into a new parliamentary constituency after the Boundary Commission divided the former Charnwood Constituency into three. The new constituencies are Loughborough, Melton & Syston and Mid Leicestershire. These constituencies are only used for General Elections. The Charnwood Borough Council still exists along with the other Borough and District councils. They are not affected by parliamentary Constitutional Boundaries.
It was a long night, but an exciting one at that from the initial flurry of ballot boxes arriving and the papers being verified into bundles of 25 ready to be officially counted. It is at this point, any of the candidates and their teams can watch with clipboards and try and mark any vote they see for their candidate, you may have seen this on the TV coverage at other areas. Once all the voting slips have been verified, which at Melton was about 1.45am, the actual counting of votes began and the hall became quiet and the bundles of 25 slips are distributed to the people counting them quickly and carefully putting the slips into trays named for each candidate. This is when the tension began to build and candidates and their teams waited in anticipation for the outcome.
There were nine stations at Melton, as each station finished their allocated voting slips, any spoilt papers were removed from the count, verified again and recorded by the returning officers team.
The results of the Melton and Syston Constituency were announced at about

4.45am and are as follows:
Edward Argar, Conservative; 17,526. Zafran Khan, Labour; 12,130. Pete Morris, Reform UK; 8,945. Alastair McQuillan, Green; 3,685. Andy Konieczko, Liberal Democrat; 2,547.
Marilyn Gordon, Independent; 517. Teck Khong, ADF; 348. Matt Shouler, Rejoin EU; 288. Therefore, Edward Argar, Conservative was duly elected as Member of Parliament for Melton and Syston Constituency with a majority of 5,396. The turn out was 61.9%, a reduction of 4.8% since on the 2019 Election.
Needless to say we were all rather tired by the end of the experience and it’s along time since your editor left home in the dark on one day and arrived home again the following morning with the sun rising!
Silent Auctions
We have held two silent auction recently, one for Syston Knitting Banksy’s (SKB) Leicester City Football Club Champions Topper which was won by Chris Shield with a generous winning bid which has gone to LOROS.
The topper will be going on display in the Shields Offices once a suitable plinth has been made for it, we will include an image in a future issue when this has happened.

who placed the winning bid.
The other was for Laetitia Loops’ crocheted Coronation blanket which raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support. See our photograph left of Sally
Thank you to everyone who placed a bid in both of these silent auctions.

In The Loop
Well, after the ‘all agency’ walk back in June ‘we, like you‘ trust the Environment Agency ‘cavalry’ are not far off arriving in Syston, their de-silting machinery (whatever that looks like) will be a most welcome sight, neglect got Syston in this mess (not climate change), but remember to be ‘kind’ when the EA do arrive (and take lots of pictures - we sure will)!
Once the EA (likely sub contractors) has done its work in the brook itself (under its permissive powers) what’s left in places along the bank will need to be looked at, (those that own land next to a watercourse own its banks and to the centre, they are riparian owners who have responsibilities) machinery cannot remove vegetation (the green bits) from the concrete sides, and there’s no money to do everything that’s needed by hand, that’s not what the EA do, never have, likely never will!
From the main car park, through Central Park down to Memorial Park is predominantly non residential, it’ll be interesting to finally see the ‘riparian owners out and about‘, shame its taking so long to have a tidy up, the history of Syston being rewritten, who knows, and it was so disappointing to see our ‘Town Council representative’ leaving the ‘all agency’ walk about (in June) at the mid way point (car park) before rejoining near the end. Staying together was the perfect

time to discuss areas of responsibility whilst with the EA, a missed opportunity, maybe? By the time this is in print let’s hope who owns, does what, and when along the brook is resolved for the ‘benefit of Syston’.
We agree with the comments made that the floral displays along the railings of the brook looked pretty during our brief summer, but did anyone look at the nearby overgrown, neglected shrubs (tocouncils and their councillors reading this, please do something to improve the look of central Syston, not such a bad idea now is it)and thank you to those residents who’ve had a go to improve that area. When your next taking a stroll by the brook or by the car park, look over to those huge trees which tower next to residents homes, a Health & Safety red flag surely (the residents of Brookside didn’t plant the trees nor did they hang and permanently fix those Christmas lights, they belong to somebody. (Questions, but not so many answers!). In the coming months SCFG would like help with a belated spring clean here and there, if anyone is able to help in any small way, or if you’ve a machine that does all the hard work whilst we watch with a cuppa and a bacon butty please contact systonfloodgroup@gmail. com we’d love to hear from you, and a special thanks goes to our local Civil Engineer for getting in touch via SCFG recently, your knowledge is outstanding, your ongoing help is appreciated, also a thank you to your assistant, you know who you are.
Finally, over the next months (for aslong as it takes)the Syston Community Flood Groupwill be in touch with LCC , CBC and the EA, (the ‘Risk Management Authorities’) the lead person will be providing us with updates so that we can share with residents, we want to ensure that Syston is not forgotten, and that the work which is in addition to the major desilt through the centre gets done, so that residents (and visitors) can all look at a wider, cleaner, safer Barkby Brook and actually live and shop in a ‘much happier Syston’.

New Barkby W.I
President, Shirley Franklin, welcomed New Barkby WI members to the institutes July meeting.
Business matters were dealt with, including the singing of ‘Jerusalem’.
The speaker for the evening was Bishop, Peter Fox, a retired bishop, but also, a member of the ‘Magic Circle’. The talk was titled, ‘A Magical History Tour’.
With power-point presentation, the earliest records appear to have been depicted in the Lascaux (France) cave painting, but even in biblical times, Aaron threw down his stick before Pharaoh, and it became a snake.
One trick performed as the talk progressed was cups and balls. The balls sometimes disappeared or even increased in size as they appeared, or, also becoming an apple, pear or lemon.
Other illusions were a glass of milk being tipped upside down, without spilling the liquid, linking rings and a rope trick; sometimes with the help of audience participation.

Tales from the Plot, August

August should be a time of plenty if you’ve done the job right. I thankfully
have had successes, but also failures this year sadly. We have spent the last six months setting seeds and planting out, only to witness the fattest, largest population of pigeons munch their way through the young tender seedlings …… unless they were covered of course. I’ve never known so many slugs and snails as there have been this year, they decimated my peas to such an extent I just dug them up and threw them in the compost in disgust. To add insult to injury a friend of mine has produced as good a crop as I’ve ever seen, admittedly covered in fine mesh from germination until harvest so both myself and my grandson Sydney have been denied the pleasure of picking from the plant and eating them fresh. Next year my peas will definitely be covered…lesson learned!
Broad beans have been a great success for me thankfully and are all now harvested and in the deep freezer. It's been a good year for strawberries with half of our crop being consumed with cream or ice cream or added to morning cereal, the rest made into jam to be enjoyed throughout the rest of the year: a similar practice is being carried out with the raspberries.
I made a bit of a mistake with my Savoy cabbages: they’ve been grown under netting and done really well but sadly they needed harvesting right in the middle of the summer when you don’t really fancy Savoy cabbage! There you go you never stop learning!
Potatoes have done very well I think it’s because of the very wet start to the year that lasted well into June - potatoes seem to like that.
Potatoes, cauliflower, cabbages, french and runner beans, carrots etc,all being
harvested as needed, however you can still sow lots of crops in August, for harvests into autumn and beyond. Not a lot of plot holders realise that you can actually set garlic now, I was always told that you plant garlic on the longest day and harvest it on the shortest. I personally leave it a little later than that although I’m not a very successful garlic grower.
If you want fresh new potatoes on the dinner table on Christmas Day, now is the last chance to set them. I have learnt this from previous experience, if later than August they will not have time to mature before the cold weather comes back.
Prepare to lift onions towards the end of the month, wait until the tops begin to fall over as this indicates that the bulb has stopped swelling, dry them before ‘stringing’ and putting into store and these bulbs will then keep until next March.
The apples and pears will soon begin to colour up along with plums and damsons being in full flow so harvest regularly, hopefully the late fruiting raspberries will be cropping well by now. Make the last of any outdoor sowings to provide a late harvest for this season, radishes and lettuce will still produce a crop.
The end of this month signals the time to begin summer pruning of your apple and pear trees (but those grown as cordons, espaliers or fans, for trees and bushes, leave these until the winter to prune). The purpose of summer pruning is to encourage the development of fruit buds for next summer.
August is definitely the last month to prune stone fruit trees (plum, apricot, cherry and peach), and of course as always keep hoeing those weeds. I find it quite remarkable that it doesn’t matter how much care you give to your vegetable plants the weeds grow faster and more often than not look healthier! If you have a interest in growing fruit and veg, on August 17, visit the allotment open day there will be tea, coffee, cakes, tombola, some fruit and veg on sale plus you can also have a walk round and talk to some of the plot holders - there is a lovely atmosphere and children are welcome.

Presentation Evening

The Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley held their annual presentation evening on the 24th June at the Royal British Legion Club in Birstall.
The evening brings together the groups that benefit from all the money raised by the Rotary Club during the previous year.
It began with President Nigel Coleman presenting Fiona Pimm with her Past President’s badge.
He said that they had raised over £11,500 over Christmas and the Watermead Challenge in July 2023. This is an amazing amount that was shared with a variety of groups and charities.
He then proceeded with presenting the groups and individuals who had
received donations for their different groups or charities all based locally. They included: Syston Town Band, Rainbows, Birstall Royal British Legion Club, Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Air Ambulance, Soar Valley Food Bank, Thrummy Drummer, Prostaid, and Age Concern.
David Fox joined Nigel to present Dave Noseley proprietor of the Beer Phamacie, Syston with the Alan Morley Award for Service Above Self.
David Fox explained why they had chosen Dave for the award this year, this included his introduction of a warm space at the Beer Pharmacie, the fact he is a trained first responder, the Easter Egg donation which was given to a local women’s refuge. He provides free meeting space to groups; examples given were a community choir and the menopause cafe, but there are many others. He also volunteers with the Samaritans once a week.

In true Dave style the donation he received he gave to a local charity. Our picture below left, shows Dave giving a short reply after he received the award.
Nigel finished by presenting Graham Packwood with his President Elect badge, the evening concluded with a buffet and time to chat.

Second Time Around
On the 11th of July, Second Time Around Community Shop donated a cheque to Blue Wave Martial Arts, a local group run by chief instructor Alex
Andrews, see image below.

Founded in 2005, this group aims to provide high quality martial arts, self protection and fitness training, thus creating confident children and successful adults. Alex is a super guy whose passion is to help youngsters achieve their full potential through this club. We at the Second Time Around Community Shop appreciate the time and effort Alex and his family put into making this possible for local people. We are so pleased to be able to give something to this club to help them.
Alex has said that the money will be used to provide four basic free self protection courses to the local community (bluewave-taekwondo. co.uk).
We at Second Time Around want to thank local people who donate to our community shop in the town square for their donations. Whether it's clothing, books or bric-a-brac; your donations really do make a difference to the local community and make things like this possible.Without you and your support, we couldn’t help local clubs and organisations.
Last year we helped many individuals, as well as groups like; Syston In Bloom, Syston Theatre Group, The Friendship Club and we also raised money for a special bed adapted for a young boy.
So Thank You from all the staff and volunteers at Second Time Around Community Shop and please remember us when having a sort out at home, every little helps.

Help Is at Hand!
Repeat Subsidised Support
Offered to Local Community Service Groups
Syston and District Volunteer Centre is once again offering valuable subsidies to support local community service organisations in their efforts to promote their services, recruit new members and volunteers and to raise funds.
Their ‘Help is at Hand!’ pavilions will be a major feature at the Syston Summer Fair to be held on Central Park in Syston on Saturday 31st August 2024
In response to issues encountered last year, a single large marquee will be replaced by four smaller marquees to allow all exhibitors front line access to visitors.

Once again, our aim is to bring together not-for-profit organisations serving the communities of Syston and the surrounding areas which offer social, cultural, sporting, educational, financial, health and emotional support to people of all ages, thereby easing problems and enhancing their quality of life.
As before, we understand that some participants will be regulars at the Summer Fayre and would prefer to continue to operate independently. The aim of ‘Help is at Hand!’ is to offer those others, who have, perhaps, not traditionally been involved, the chance to exhibit at a well-attended event at a significantly discounted price (£15). This may allow your organisation to take advantage of a relatively low-cost opportunity to promote your services with the minimum of organisational effort. There are limited places available, so early confirmation of your attendance is highly recommended. This is a very popular event and places will be allotted on a first come first served basis, once all places have been filled, a reserve list will be established should any organisation

Tracy’s at Syston Retirement

For those of you who haven't heard on the grapevine, or I haven't yet seen in person, I am writing to let you all know that I have taken the difficult decision to put my scissors down and retire!!
I have spent the last twenty-five years in my salon working hard, with some wonderful stylists, to make sure all my lovely ladies (and Gents) have great hair and have a place to offload their troubles and share their good times. I have seen so many of you through life’s ups and downs and have had the honour of seeing your families grow and change over the years. However, the time has come to prioritise my health and my life away from the salon (my husband won’t know what’s hit him!!!)
The salon as of Tuesday the 27th of August will be moving to new management but, other than myself, ALL the friendly and familiar faces will still be there to welcome you.
To each and every one of you who have supported my small business and chosen to spend your hard-earned cash with me I wish to say a very big THANK YOU!
Thank you for your fierce loyalty, for the laughs and the tears. For all the coffees and hot chocolates, I have made you over the years, mine's a decaff latte if you spot me in the village.
Thank you to my Family, whom without their help and support I would not have made it to twenty-five years. To Rhia, Jaz and Sarah thank you for all your help support but most of all your amazing talent and dedication that has made my salon what it is today and I wish all the very best of good luck girls!!!!
Sending lots of love and best wishes to you all, Tracy XXX
PS. existing appointments will remain on the system under the new management. The girls are working hard to organize appointments and we will have another member of staff soon. Any adjustments or time changes will be discussed with you individually in due course.
Again, Thank YOU for twenty five wonderful years XXXX Tracy.
Charnwood Local Plan 2021 - 37
A consultation is underway over proposed changes to the draft Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37 as the process to develop it reaches an advanced stage.
The draft Local Plan provides a robust strategy for growth in Charnwood and identifies how the borough will meet Government targets for new homes, as well as providing employment land and critical infrastructure. It will also help safeguard the environment.
Several phases of consultation have been carried out in recent years and the plan is currently being scrutinised by independent planning inspectors in the examination phase.
Following a series of public hearings, there is now a consultation on some proposed changes, or main modifications. This is takes place from Wednesday 17th July until 5pm on Wednesday 4th September.
For more information about the consultation and how to take part, please visitwww.charnwood.gov.uk/localplan.
Paper copies of the modifications will also be placed in the Council offices in Southfield Road, Loughborough.
Responses can be submitted in writing to the Local Plans Team, Charnwood Borough Council, Southfield Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 2TN. When the consultation ends, the planning inspectors will consider any comments made before writing a report to the Council about if the Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37 is sound based on the changes made as part of the main modifications consultation. The Council can then consider adopting it.

The views and opinions expressed in the Letter below are those of the authors and do not reflect the opinion of the Syston Town News.
Dear Editor,
Firstly, I must make clear that the event was run by Syston Town Council and supported by the Royal British Legion, not vice-versa as reported.
Then, I feel that I must express my disappointment about the letter written by S. Blaxland in the July issue of the Stn relating to the D-Day 80 celebrations. To read that they were disgusted by the event and that it wasn’t advertised enough is staggering. The event and timings were set out in a poster that was distributed far and wide as well as in the June issue of the Stn.I wonder what else we were expected to do to get the message out there?
The Syston Cadets managed by Kieran McCrory, Second Lieutenant, (B) Tiger Squadron played a key role in standing for a Guard of Honour for the arrival of the Lord Lieutenant and providing assistance and litter picking around the park.I wonder if these are “a few people hanging around in uniform” according to S. Blaxland, how disrespectful to our young cadets is that?
The plinth with an oil lamp on top, was not the beacon, this was for the Lord Lieutenant to light for peace after he gave his tribute.
The Syston Band played excellently and local singer, Sarah Clarke sang a variety of songs from the 1940s, but according to the letter’s author, neither the band or Sarah were present, they arrived in time to perform from 7pm.
The D-Day 80 commemorations were instructed directly via Bruno Peak, the National Pageant Master. It was the choice of Syston Town Council and the RBL to make the event bigger and to try and include something for everyone. The main event of the lighting of the Beacon at 9.15pm along with the rest of the country, parts of Europe, USA and Canada was not negotiable.
We have received many compliments about the event, so it is regrettable that this one harsh and unfair criticism has found its way to the July issue.
Next year is VE80 Day and based on the compliments we have received, we are looking to make this a bigger weekend event, although the lighting of the Beacon will remain on VE Day anniversary itself. We hope that those that enjoyed DDay80 will support both ours and the Town Council’s efforts to make this a happy and enjoyable occasion with no room for negativity.
Paul Baxter
Vice Chairman of Syston Royal British Legion
Note from the Editor
We would like to apologise to the Royal British Legion and the Syston Town Council for incorrectly reporting who was responsible for running the D-Day event.
Dear Editor,
Once again I personally would like to thank the Deputy Town Manager Ursula Southan who designed the floral displays and the lovely parks department who care for all the beautiful displays of flowers around Syston, very uplifting to see such lovely blooms especially around the park and down the side of the brook, they smell divine and the whole town looks amazing.

You seek to spend time outdoors whether gardening or walking or pursuing some sports' activity. This does you much good and your health improves and puts a spring in your step. There are many discussions around you linked to practical decisions and yet you're impervious to persuasion; you've heard it all before.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
All is not really as it seems – you suspect – and then you find out that the truth is indeed so completely different! This causes you to step back this month and to revise your plans considerably. Yet no-one needs to know and you quietly set off in a totally new direction. Only intelligent Librans can pull off such a stunt.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21
Your determination seems a little muted and this may be because you need a holiday or time off from your current obligations. So take some time out or at least plan to do so because you'll find that it will give you an edge later on. Practical tasks around house and home are likely even though they’re a headache at times.
SAGITTARIUSNov 22 - Dec 21
Travel is likely this month and this is a favourite thing for Sagittarius to do! Someone needs a helping hand or even a shoulder to cry on. This strengthens a special bond between you and you’ll be the best of pals for a long time to come. However, there will be days when it seems that you're chasing your tail. Be patient.
CAPRICORNDec 22 - Jan 19
You turn a page on the book of life only to discover that you have to look back and revise issues over the last few years, in order to gain an understanding. Only then can you move forward, enlightened and full of resolve and intent. Others close to you find it all so difficult to understand! So give things time to resolve.
AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 18
You work quietly and methodically, putting things in order and focusing on your work. Your concentration is good at the moment and you're able to solve long-standing and difficult problems quite easily and which seemed almost impossible before. Others flap around you somewhat so you need to detach a little.
PISCESFeb 19 - March 20
You gain a deeper insight into life and consequently acquire a firmer grasp of reality. You are more accepting of things as they are and won't suffer ‘what ifs' and broken dreams and lost desires! This makes you rather formidable and sure of your chosen direction in life. Others can follow or not, whateveryou’re happy.

Leicestershire National Garden Scheme Open Gardens
August
There are four gardens opening in Leicestershire during August, all with something different for visitors to enjoy.

Opening every day from Saturday 10th until Sunday 18th 10am to 4pm is 221 Markfield Rd, Groby, LE6 0FT. This is a garden Tardis. It looks modest from the roadside entrance, and inside is an acre large spectacular garden full of colour, with several garden rooms leading down to a natural pond and a river. There are three large greenhouses and two veg growing areas full of garden produce. Throughout the garden, containers of bedding plants add to the colourful planting. An immaculate garden packed with interest.
Opening over the weekend Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of August is 182 Ashby Rd, Hinckley, LE10 1SW 11am to 4pm. A cottage style garden packed full of colourful perennials and annuals, with containers full of cannas, agapanthus, banana plants, and dahlias. A really colourful garden with various seating areas including a garden room to relax and enjoy the garden with light refreshments.

The Old Barn, pictured above, opens on Saturday 17th and Sunday the 18th 10am to 4pm. A two acre garden with tree lined cobbled paths, a walled garden, cottage planting, open views, a pergola with climbing plants, and a rewilding meadow. This peaceful garden is situated in a small hamlet. For children visiting, there are Peafowl on view, a tombola and
treasure hunt. The main garden is wheelchair accessible.
The last garden to open on Sunday 25th of August is Tresillian House, Melton Mowbray LE13 0BQ 3/4 an acre of garden which includes a natural pond, a koi pond, vegetable plot and a wide variety of unusual plants, trees and shrubs. There will be a small art exhibition by local artists, cream teas and live jazz. St Paul’s Court Gardens

On Wednesday 3rd July, your editor was invited to view the gardens at St Paul’s Court which normally enter the Charnwood Borough Council tenants garden competition.
Unfortunately, this year due to the floods which devastated Syston in January most of the residents from the ground flood flats have had to move out and cannot return until their flats are dried out and redecorated, which may not be until next year!
This has displaced their community and left the gardens to become over grown and in need looking after.
However, two ladies living at St Paul’s Court have taken up the challenge to tend the area and are doing their best to keep it looking good under the circumstances.

Jane and Valerie, pictured above, have been weeding, tidying and

On Sunday 30th June 2024, The Grosvenor Lounge in Syston, together with Syston’s Happy Ukulele Band, hosted a concert to help raise awareness of Epilepsy and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP)
This event was held in memory of Emily Purday who passed away from unexpected death in epilepsy in 2022.
Len Abraham, leader of Syston’s Happy Ukulele Band, along with over 25 band members provided an afternoon’s entertainment and various songs were sung and strummed, including Urban Spaceman featuring our brass section on kazoo saxophones and a rousing finale of Sweet Caroline accompanied by four of our band members waving big foam hands, which got a great response from the audience who joined in with much

enthusiasm! Neil Purday, Emily’s brother, was invited to speak about the two epilepsy charities, and it was very moving to hear about Emily and the family’s story. Neil and all Emily’s family have made it their mission to raise awareness of these charities that offer support to those living with epilepsy and comfort to those who have lost a loved one to epilepsy. We would like to thank Steph and Matt at The Grosvenor for facilitating this event and to thank everyone who attended and contributed so generously, which resulted in £500 being raised( with gift aid this will result in the total being £625, )This amazing amount raised will be of so much benefit to Epilepsy Society UK and SUDEP.

another epileptic seizure, this time, one that took place during her sleep. Despite the best efforts of my mum, who did absolutely everything she could to revive her, she was unable to be saved, leaving us all devastated.
Emily’s tragic loss has left us heartbroken and struggling with the massive part of our family that has been taken from us.
However, Emily had an infectious spirit and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her, so to honour her, we’ve tried to do as much as we can to raise awareness and money for charity, in her memory. Neil Purday and Family.

Our Story
Emily, our baby sister, had suffered from Epilepsy from a young age. There was a time where her fits were frequent and really affected her day to day life, always being something she needed to consider and prepare for. However, as she moved out of her teenage years, changes in her medication seemed to get things under control and Emily went several years without a fit. Emily’s epilepsy was so well managed that she was even able to start driving lessons and pass her test, eventually buying a car that she loved. In the summer of 2022, Emily started to experience more fits, having a particularly bad one on her 27th Birthday, in August. Emily, as she always did, took this in her stride and started to find ways to try to manage her epilepsy, once again. Just two months later, on the morning of 6th October 2022, we tragically and unexpectedly lost Emily following

Emily’s family are so grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness of these charities and convey their heartfelt thanks to those who attended and to Syston’s Happy Ukulele Band, such is the beauty of human kindness combined with the humble ukulele.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News
Confirmation
there will be music with R.J. Vocal Coaching Community Choir and a Book Stall.

On Sunday 7th July we welcomed Bishop Saju to St Peter and St Paul’s Church for a Confirmation Service. Seven candidates were confirmed during a joyful and Spirit filled service. They affirmed for themselves their baptism vows and received the gift of God’s Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and anointing with oil. Bishop Saju preached a powerful sermon reminding us that we are all made in God’s image and are loved by him.The church was full of family, friends and supporters and the candidates left to rapturous applause each holding their Confirmation candle which signifies the light of Christ. Afterwards there was a splendid spread in the church hall put together
by willing volunteers. It was a truly blessed occasion and we hold the candidates in our prayers as they continue their journey of discipleship. If you would like to find out more or are interested in baptism, confirmation or having your wedding at St Peter and St Paul’s please do contact Revd Ros. Our prayer is to be an open and welcoming church seeking to serve our local community.
Cream Teas
Our second Cream Teas event took place on Saturday 6th July. The promised bad weather had moved away and people started arriving promptly to enjoy their Cream Tea. The Wimbledon theme meant there was a chance to enjoy a bowl of Strawberries and Cream instead of the traditional scone, jam and cream. This was a great success! It was a bonus that we raised £171.50 for church funds.

The next Cream Teas event is on Sunday 4th August as there is a wedding on the Saturday! This time

Your editor had a walk round the store and was impressed by the range and prices, they seem to be plugging a gap left by Wilko’s closing and it is nice to see a new business in the space left by Wilko’s in Syston, we hope they help to bring shoppers back into Syston and support our other independent retailers.
The Card Factory opened at the same time and in discussion with the Managing Director of Savers: Doug Winchester and the Manager of the Card Factory in Syston: Katie, said this was normal as they work closely together when opening new stores like Syston and try to open at the same time.
Our picture below shows some of the queue.

Green Party Councillors Report
The past year has thrown up many challenges for the town, not least of which was the terrible flooding that we saw in October and January. These floods were destructive and distressing and many are still living with the after effects.
Our priority was to ensure that those who’s homes were damaged received the support they were entitled to. Following January’s flood, we went door to door to let people know how they could access funding to help with the immediate aftermath and other schemes to protect their homes against

I am so proud of all we have achieved at the cemetery. The Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Community Award, which our

Residents of Syston were deeply frustrated as they found it difficult to get answers over maintenance of water courses and how to access flood protection. In response to this, we have been working with residents, other tiers of council and the various agencies with responsibilities for flood response. This is in the form of a flooding scrutiny panel at Charnwood to question these agencies and get clear commitments to improve the response to the flooding. We have also joined residents in calling on the Environment Agency to undertake a clean up of the brook and improve flooding alerts. The result of this is that the Environment Agency will be clearing silt and debris from the

brook this autumn and a flood alert specifically for the Barkby Brook will be available later this year.
Longer term, we will be making sure that the action plan currently being drawn up by the County Council (the body with the lead responsibility for flooding) is effective, and more importantly, is being followed. This is the first of what we hope to be a regular column and we are grateful to the editor for affording us an opportunity to reach residents in Syston and beyond.
Laurie Needham, Andy Haynes, David Infield, Chris O’Neill, & Sandra Woodward – Green Party councillors for Syston and surrounding villages.
We really need to swell the number of the Friends of the cemetery, so if you feel that you can spare a few hours every now and then and would like to help us keep the cemetery in such pristine condition, please pop along to Syston Town Council and ask how to join the friends of Barkby Road Cemetery.

Also, now in situ, to the left of our beautiful Chapel in the car park is the letterbox to heaven, where you can post letters to loved ones in heaven. It’s been a long time coming but is now in use.
It's been quite busy as you can imagine over the last few months as a cycle of nature of life continues, as does our work there.

I hope that you enjoyed our D-Day display and also the open day when we celebrated the Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves.
If you would like to hire the Chapel you can do so by contacting Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150, and likewise if you would like to donate a rose to a loved one. (Many of the roses down the two runways have now died and will need replacing.)
Enjoy the summer, if we get one. Ros

Team 3G Are off on Their Travels Again for LOROS

As it has not been possible to organise the 'From Classics to Jazz' concert this year because of Rachael's playing commitments in Hull,Maureen and Rachael decided to virtually pedal
the 'North Coast 500' - 516 miles round the coast of Scotland starting at Inverness and travelling clockwise. They completed their journey with some difficulty due to various health problems on July 19th, the 26th anniversary of when Maureen’s husband Jim passed away in LOROS. It has been a very interesting ‘pedal’ imagining the spectacular scenery they have passed through!
Maureen and Rachael are still hoping to reach their goal of raising £500 for LOROS. Since 2000 with the 'From Classics to Jazz' concerts and their virtual journeys during lockdown, they have so far raised over £10,000. They hope that as many people as possible will continue to support them in their fundraising efforts for LOROS, a charity which will always remain close to their hearts. As before, they will leave their JustGiving page open until the end of August for any further donations, and Faith has decided to keep walking and cycling until then to see just how far she can get.
Donations may still be made via their 'Team 3G' JustGiving pagehttps:// www.justgiving.com/page/rachaeldixon-1710438134018or to Syston Town News, 55 Goodes Lane, Syston. (Cheques payable to LOROS please)
