SKB Charity Calendars Boost Local Charities Both SKB and ourselves have been blown away by the response to the Charity Calendar we produced using our photographs of SKBs toppers and other items throughout 2021 to devise a calendar for 2022.

We have sent them far and wide, in the UK as well as Canada, America and Australia. We know from people who came to us to buy a copy that others have been sent to many other countries around the world.

Your editor took no financial reward for creating the calendar so the only cost was for printing and the outcome of that is each charity has received an amazing £1154 from the profits.

This will be a great boost for each charity. Syston and District Volunteer Centre and Age Concern Syston both do amazing work for local residents and we hope they can use the funds to help continue their good work.

Thank you to everyone who bought a calendar and thank you to the Post Office, most of the calendars were purchased via them, Brookside Cafe, Age Concern and Syston and District Volunteer Centre who all held copies to sell.

Both charities were exceedingly grateful and happy for the funds received.

We have taken lots of people out for Christmas meals during December including some people who were treated to a free meal at The White Horse at Quorn.

Finally we would like to thank all those who volunteer and donate to our small local charity as we are run by three part-time staff and volunteers.

Grow Give Live is a local community group and will soon be creating a shared garden for Syston and its residents.

Everyone is welcome to join us in developing the plot and helping us to grow fruit and vegetables for our community.

NEW BARKBY WI President Mrs Shirley Franklin welcomed members to the institutes December meeting.

A short time was given to W.I. matters, then the evening became a free session. There was no carol concert but two readings were given by Mrs B Hayes and Mrs K Fryman, and a poem was recited by Mrs J Brutnall (a Pam Ayres poem on Inflationary Days). There was also a quiz based on Christmas by Mrs A Wright and a ‘What’s in the Handbag’ according to the Presidents list.

During the evening there was the opportunity to socialise and enjoy mince pies, biscuits, small buns and a Christmas sponge cake both made by Mrs J Goulden. A pleasant evening to the end the year.

On 22nd May 2017 Martin Hibbert’s life changed forever. He was the closest survivor of the Manchester Arena bomber which tragically took the lives of 22 people. A bolt sheared off the arena wall and went through his spinal cord, severing it and leaving him paralysed below the waist. The NHS saved his life but the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) gave him the hope, confidence and practical skills to start again.

Martin is so grateful for the help he received by the SIA, he is undertaking to climb Mt Kilimanjaro this year using a specially adapted wheelchair along with a team of people to assist him to raise One Million Pounds for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). He will not only tackle altitude, temperature and life under canvas but the mental challenge of this amazing feat as well.

At present Martin has raised an amazing £347,498.78 towards it.

Martins aim is to help every spinal cord injured person get the care and support they need when they need it.

The owners of Spectrum Sensory Sports recognised the lack of provisions available in Leicestershire to encourage physical activity for children and young people with these needs.

Community Events: Spectrum Sensory Sports will be running events which encourage physical activity and aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people living with physical or learning disabilities or difficulties.

5th May 1941 to 7th November 2021 Maurice was born and bred in Syston, he had seen his village grow into the town it is today.

He was very proud to be a Systonian.

He met Marilyn when they both worked at DCE in Thurmaston and married in 1967 recorded in the local newspaper as it was a double wedding with her sister Kathleen and Ian. Some may remember Maurice from when he and Marilyn ran ‘Bents’ Grocery store, where his hot breakfast cobs were famous.

The family have many memories to share from Maurice’s cooking skills to DIY and holidays. Marilyn and Maurice loved camping and continued until three years ago. They also travelled extensively.

Maurice was also active within the community of Syston in a variety of ways; acting, singing and playing in the Tally HO band. His love of music has been a huge part of the family and continues today. When his daughters were at S.S. Peter & Paul junior school, Maurice was treasurer of the parent teacher association and was involved in organising many fund raising events.

Over the last 20 years both Maurice and Marilyn have been active members of Syston In Bloom and were involved in lots of projects particularly up to Syston’s entry into the RHS annual In Bloom competition and was latterly a Syston Station Adopter, taking care of the station. He was also a member of the Syston Methodist Badminton Club, of which he was Treasurer for several years.

He will be missed by all who knew him but the memories will remain.

The Christmas period is an important time for Wreake Valley Rotary Club members and volunteer helpers including the Good Gym group. It is one of our busiest periods for fundraising.

The weather in December was kind on the twelve evenings of collecting with our charity Santa Sleigh except for rain in Birstall on the last night.

We also held collections at both Dunelm and Asda in Thurmaston, and organised our inaugural Christmas fancy dress themed charity run, the ‘Watermead Winter Warmer’.

Club President Graham Packwood (pictured at the run) commented: “we are very grateful to the public, our volunteers and both supermarkets for their support during this important time. Decisions on the allocation of funds to charitable causes, including Rainbows Hospice will be made by the end of February and will be widely publicised. We take great care to ensure all monies raised are distributed as wisely and fairly as possible. Many thanks to all concerned.”

Your Options for Accessing Your Pension Explained You now have more control over how you access your retirement savings than ever before. If you have a Defined Contribution (DC) pension, your options include drawdown, partial or total withdrawal, and buying an annuity. You also don’t have to access your pension if you don’t need it yet.

A regulated financial planner can discuss your retirement goals with you and help you make the right decision for you and your family. Retirement savers now have an opportunity to plan their futures with a flexibility unknown to previous generations. Today, there is no longer a hard stop after which you are expected to rely on a pre-set income stream regardless of changing circumstances.

Instead, you are more in control than ever before and can tailor a plan to suit you as you move into retirement.

However, with the increase in choices available, deciding which options are best for you can sometimes be overwhelming.

In this article, we will take you through the main considerations when assessing your retirement benefits and discuss how to work out what you will need. We generally focus on those with Defined Contribution (DC) pensions, although some consideration is given to those with Defined Benefit (DB) pensions.

At all stages, it’s important to remember that you have the flexibility to combine any of the following options to best suit

your needs. Talk to a regulated financial planner to plan the best outcome for you and your family.

What are the options for accessing my pension?

Drawdown: This option is available for those aged 55 or above (57 from 2028) and allows you to take money direct from your pension with no limit on withdrawals, subject to the value of your pension pot.

You can use a drawdown to create income – or take it as a lump sum or a series of lump sums. The first 25% you take is tax free; after that, it’s liable to Income Tax at your marginal rate.

Partial or total withdrawal: You can make a partial withdrawal from your unaccessed DC pension without moving into pension drawdown through an Uncrystallised Funds Pension Lump Sum (UFPLS). The 25% tax-free rule applies, although HMRC could apply an emergency tax to a large withdrawal, which you will have to claim back. You can also withdraw your entire pension fund via this method. Always discuss your plans with a financial planner before making this decision.

Annuity: This is a product you can purchase with your pension funds that will provide a guaranteed income for the rest of your life. Although the popularity of annuities has declined in recent years, they should not be dismissed as an option – especially as part of a diversified approach to retirement planning. Rates tend to be better the older you are, and it’s always worth looking for an enhanced annuity to improve your rate further.

It’s important to remember that your retirement income is not entirely dependent on your pension. While that is likely to be the most important source, other investments and savings can act as a portfolio of assets that you utilise to achieve your retirement plans. This ability to switch different sources of income on and off is particularly useful if you’re planning to gradually shift from working to being fully retired, as opposed to stopping work for good on a set date.

When working out how much you need for the rest of your life, a good starting point is to understand that there is no magic number. The figure will be different for everyone, and the only way to arrive at something that works for you is to sit with your adviser, decide what your objectives are for later life and see when certain incomes are going to switch on and off. Mapping out your retirement plans should take the following into account: When do your earnings stop and what are your regular outgoings?

When does State Pension kick in?

Have you got any DB benefits? If you have a scheme in place, it will often be set up to pay out at a certain age. You can usually choose to take it all as income, some as tax-free cash or ask for a transfer-value figure, but remember advice is crucial when looking at DB pensions.

The Friends Of Syston Cemetery (FOSC) Hello everyone, The Friends Of Syston Cemetery (FOSC) would like to wish you all you wish for yourselves for 2022.

January was a quiet month with only the wreaths to remove as they die off and the general tidying up as necessary. The Christmas week was extremely busy with cars and visitors to the cemetery and the chapel. Lots of candles were lit on the open days.

Christmas has been so peaceful here with lots of special memories of loved ones, lots of tributes which made everything look beautiful with even some winter cherry blossoms showing up for Christmas Day.

It will soon be spring - with longer warmer days, snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells and crocus giving us some wonderful colour and hopefully the blossoms will soon be appearing as well as the birds singing in the trees, I can’t wait.

I shall be decorating the chapel for St Valentine’s Day in February and for St David’s Day and Mothering Sunday in March.

Derek Cox

We were so sad to hear that Derek Cox had passed away in December 2021.

Derek wrote our ‘This Month in the Garden’ page for the last 15 years and was a regular panellist on BBC Radio’s ‘Down to Earth’ programme since it began.

He also wrote for many national gardening magazines over his lifetime and many tributes were given on social media at the time of his passing.

He was a true plantsman and had a wealth of knowledge and was always happy to share his knowledge with gardeners of all levels of experience.

It was a pleasure to have worked with him for all the time I have owned the paper and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

He used to love meeting readers and listeners when he and Vi were out, whether shopping or just visiting places. People would recognise his voice and would ask if he was Derek Cox, he always replied yes, then would hold a conversation with that person, shopping could take a long time!

But he was always generous with his time and knowledge.

We will miss you Derek and send our love and condolences to Vi and the family.

This Month in the Garden

Derek Cox

As you will have read in the newspaper, sadly we lost my uncle, Derek Cox who wrote this page for many years, in December.

As a tribute to Derek I’d like to relate a little tale of serendipity. Derek had asked me if I would like any of his many gardening books so I went to have a look through them. As we were chatting I began telling Vi and Derek about the stunning little geranium I’d found growing in one of my borders. I can only presume I’d bought it at one of Brooksby Gardening Club’s plant auctions and, to be honest, it had got rather crowded out by other plants and forgotten about. However, during lockdown I rediscovered it and was quite blown away by the intricate kaleidoscopic markings on the flowers but I had no idea what variety it was. I proceeded to show Vi and Derek a photo (see top of page). I then glanced down and on top of the bookcase was a book of wildflowers – imagine my surprise to see a picture of “my” geranium on the front cover. Needless to say I was delighted to accept that book and now I know the name of the plant – Geranium versicolor (or Pencilled crane’s-bill) – I have been able to send away for three more barerooted plants which I have dotted about the garden and which have now started to put on some new growth.

Now, whenever I see those delightful flowers I’ll think fondly of Derek and the happy times we spent wandering around either his garden or mine talking about plants and continuing the discussion over a cuppa and his favourite chocolate biscuits. I only wish I had a quarter of his knowledge and memory for plant names. I am so grateful for all the advice he gave me – he was always eager to share his

vast knowledge of the plant world and I shall miss him greatly.

Looking around the garden at this less than inspiring time of year it’s always good to see some plants that can really cheer you up on even the dullest of days.

One of those plants is Choisya Sundance which keeps its yellow leaves all year round and in spring, like all Choisya varieties, produces scented white flowers and will often flower for a second time in autumn.

Choisya Aztec Pearl is another valuable evergreen shrub with attractive finely cut leaves but Sundance can stop you in your tracks with its fantastic foliage.

Another plant I obtained from the aforementioned plant auction was one of our native irises, Iris Foetidissima.

Although its flowers are not showy like many of its relatives, being a rather dull banana yellow with brownish markings, its leaves are strappy in shape and evergreen and in the winter it bears clusters of bright orange berries which provide a welcome splash of colour.

I would like to say thank you for all the lovely cards and many tributes paid to my beloved husband, Derek.

It all happened so suddenly and we were not really prepared for it.

Derek was a lovely man, well-liked by everyone he met. He was a true plantsman whose horticultural knowledge knew no bounds. He so enjoyed writing his articles in Stn about his own garden and the plants he grew, many of them quite rare.

When out and about, he would often get stopped by someone who needed help with a gardening problem and Derek would gladly advise them on how to care for their plants. He loved talking to people – whether he knew them or not!

Derek will be greatly missed by all who knew him but will live on in everyone’s memories.

Syston Bowlers Celebrate 2021 Competitions Successes On 27th November members of Syston Bowling Club paid tribute to the winners of the 2021 series of Club competitions. Club President, Derek Renshaw, welcomed Members and special guests and Club Patrons, Chris Meynell and wife Cathy.

Once again, for the fifth year running, the Champion of Champions Trophy, sponsored by Chris Meynell and Family Independent Funeral Directors, was won by a lady, see picture above.

On this occasion, the 2020 Ladies’ Champion, Pauline Wright, was crowned following her impressive success against 2020 Men’s Champion, Derek Renshaw.

The Mick Hughes Men’s 4-Woods Club Championship this year was presented to Martin Warner. Very impressively, both Ladies’ 4-Woods and 2-Woods Singles Trophies were won by Marilyn Wood.

The Syston Town News sponsored trophy for 2-Wood Triples was presented to Mick Pipes, Martin Warner and Pauline Wright.

Fosseway Bowls Club 2021 Review

Back in April of last year no one was quite sure how our bowling season would work out but much to every one’s surprise we had a fantastic season. We had games or matches every day right through to the end of September. If other clubs were unable to play their match for whatever reason (usually covid related) we would arrange a match between ourselves to ensure that we, at least, had a game.

Both our mens and ladies teams got through to the final of the county unbadged four + four which was a really first class achievement.

The highlight of the year is always the tour and this year was no exception. Forty seven boarded the bus the last week of August travelling

to Bournemouth. All four of the clubs we were playing confirmed that they were covid free and were looking forward to welcoming us.

We played all four matches and won all four. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Bournemouth and raised £300 in fines for Rainbows and swelled the clubs coffers by £880 with our daily raffles. A big thank you to John and Linda Gant for organising not just this tour, but also the six previous tours. John and Linda have decided to retire from tour organisation and we wish Chris and Jackie Tressler all the best as they take over the responsibility.

The bowling season was concluded with Presentation Night on the 13th November when all the winners of the various club competitions were awarded their silverware and prizes.

The men’s champion this year is Tom Jordan and the ladies champion is Kath Hope. Congratulations to all our winners.

John Gant takes over as President for 2022 from David Hings and Ken Sewell becomes Chairman. Chris Tressler takes over the mantle of Club Captain. We wish them all well in their new capacities.

Rising Inflation and Escalating Prices Threatens Standard of Living for Older People Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland believes rising inflation and escalating prices are now threatening the standard of living for many pensioners on low incomes, creating uncertainty and anxiety as winter begins to bite.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News The parish church of St Peter and St Paul holds its regular services on Wednesday mornings at 9.30 and Sundays at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend. We ask that you wear masks while you are in the church (unless exempt) and sanitise your hands on entry to the church. The Parish Parochial Council held its meeting in January. The following points were noted – the rope holding the flag to its flagpole had become damaged during bad weather earlier in 2021. It has proved to be extremely difficult to get anyone to repair it. The church appeals to the people of Syston as to how it can be replaced.

End of Year Catch-up

During the four weeks of Advent each Thursday there was an opportunity to find how to use art for prayer. These were well received and much was learned from the colours used to the symbolism in each of the pictures.

There was an open church and Coffee Morning on 12th December for people to look at the window decorations as they had been ‘greened’ for Advent. There were carols playing and places to stop and chat. It was obvious that people enjoyed the opportunity to socialise in a spacious, safe place. There were also memories of Syston and an opportunity to buy the wonderful book about Syston in the 20th century written by Felicity Austin.

The flower team once again excelled in their decorations for Christmas.

The traditional carol service was held the Sunday before Christmas and the congregation sat appropriately distanced wearing masks. It was agreed by many who attended that it was wonderful to raise one’s voice and celebrate the story of Christ’s birth.

At 11.30pm there was a Midnight Mass to celebrate the true beginning of Christmas.

This service was led by Reverend Biddy Saunders. Many of the Church’s traditional elements were used for this service including incense.

At 10am on Christmas Day there was a joint Communion Service with Barkby Church. Reverend Biddy noted that many people who attended the various opportunities for worship over the Christmas period were delighted by the variety on offer. Something for everyone!

carers, were invited to engage in an activity and encouraged to reflect on the significance of the idea in their own lives.

Advent being four significant Sundays, the first station was for hope. A tea-light holder was decorated here whilst considering hopes for ourselves, families, the community and the world. Love for our outdoor world was station two, a simple apple bird feeder creation sparked discussion of how we can show love. Week three of advent is the pink candle on the churches advent wreath, representing joy. For this station, a pipe cleaner was artistically bent into the shape of something that bought joy. A star was given out at station four to encourage thinking about peace, representing the wise men who followed the star to search for Jesus. At the final station families were given an advent bag to take home to continue to reflect and pray about the things they had experienced during the trail.

On Christmas Eve the group then organised a ‘walk through’ Christingle.

This started from Upper Church Street with a walk with the stages of the birth with short Bible passages to read.

They were recently able to present the church Treasurer with a cheque for £460 for church expenses. A most amazing result from all their hard work. Many congratulations to the hard-working Mother and Daughter baking team! We reckon they'd stand a good chance of winning a prize on a well-known television programme!

Tots at Ten, the popular meeting opportunity for babies and toddlers, returned on the 11th January 2022 at 10am in the Church Hall. Sue Measures – an experienced child minder - is now organising the bookings for these delightful sessions. Paul will continue to meet and greet those for story and sing time in the Church. If you wish to help out in anyway please contact Rev Biddy your help is needed especially to help with refreshments and setting up.

Something New Beginning in February we will be examining ‘Women in the Bible’. We will be hearing about the women you don’t usually ‘see’ or hear about but have such an impact on the whole biblical story and beyond.

This will begin on Sunday 24th February at 7.00pm in Barkby Church. There will be guest speakers and light refreshments.

The families proceeded into church where they were encouraged to look carefully round and spot three stars before looking at the knitted soldier who, at present is being housed at the back of the church. They left by the south door collecting a bag in which was all that was needed to make a Christingle at home.

As the church has been unable to hold its usual fund-raising events for many months now, Anne and Joanne Kemp, who normally run a home-made cake stall at the Christmas Bazaar, decided that they would carry on as normal in this abnormal time we are living in! Janet Midgley

Janet Midgley, who died on 13th November, was a loving, yet tenacious, person whose underriding principles were truth, honesty and loyalty.

In the 1980s she would be seen in Syston, shopping or doing the school run leading a procession of young children she was looking after in her capacity as a childminder.

Although Janet was strict, she was very fair and the children loved being with her, tantrums when parents came to collect them were not uncommon. In the summer holidays she would take the children to Central Park to play rounders, and it was quite common for other children (and adults sometimes) to join in.

When her own children were all of school age, in 1990, Janet started her career at the Health Centre, where as a receptionist she became well known. I say this because she used to be constantly saying hello to people in the street. When asked who they were, her reply was invariably “One of our patients”!

It got a bit much when this happened on holiday in Corfu, and again at Court 1 at Wimbledon. Her career was to last for over 20 years, during which time she became well respected by patients, staff and doctors.

Janet believed strongly that ‘if you live in a community you should put something into it’. To that end she was a Town Councillor from 1991 until ill health forced her to retire quite recently. Throughout that time her passion was the town amenities, in particular the cemetery, and she was tireless in trying to make Syston a better place.

With her love of children she was a school governor both of St Peter and St Paul, and Merton primary schools.

Chiesi Expands Postal Inhaler Recycling Scheme Following the Success of Pilot in Leicestershire This is a Chiesi Limited scheme supported by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Leicestershire and Rutland Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC).

Following the successful launch of Chiesi Limited’s postal inhaler recycling pilot scheme, Leicestershire Take AIR (Action for Inhaler Recycling) in February 2021, the

reconnecting and reminiscing with others.

The response to our article and the letter was amazing and engaged a lot of debate regarding the name we couldn’t decipher.

‘I loved this article. I can see that there is a Mrs Ada Greasley (born in Syston about 1865) and her husband, Mr Thomas Cook Greasley (a railway

They did take in lodgers.’

There was a lot more discussion about the Greasley and Freer families.

Due to the increasing demand for recycling, and in response to demand from the NHS, Chiesi is expanding the scheme across Leicestershire’s hospitals (Leicester General Hospital, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary) so that patients can receive a pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope from designated parts of the hospitals.

The pilot has already seen impressive uptake with almost twothirds (63%) of all pharmacies across the Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland (LLR) area participating and supplying envelopes to patients.

Thirty patients who have currently used the scheme and responded to a feedback survey say that they are happy with the scheme and that they believe Take AIR should also be available across the UK. The scheme is now just over halfway through the pilot period and to date there have been nearly 7,000 envelopes issued to pharmacies, and nearly 2,000 envelopes returned to the specialist recycling centre via Royal Mail.

This has resulted in nearly 7,000 inhalers being successfully diverted from municipal waste and recycled so far.

Leicester Ramblers So British Summer Time has ended and the shorter colder days are upon us and we now brace ourselves for a few months of frosty mornings and cold airflows from arctic and polar regions!

Notwithstanding this Rambling rolls on regardless on the seasons! Our watchword for walking in comfort year round is “There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing”!

This is a truism as once you are kitted out with decent boots and requisite waterproof and thermal layers the pleasures of walking in like minded company remains constant.

Hopefully as winter rapidly approaches us we will be spared some of the more severe restrictions of twelve months ago. If gyms and indoor sports activities were to face shutdown then the ability to exercise in the fresh air takes on added importance and we will aim, always following national guidelines, to continue our walks ranging from leisurely four milers to more energetic outings in the range from 12 to 14 miles for the more adventurous.

In general terms our officers reports were upbeat, as an example on week commencing 8th November we had 51 walkers out on Tuesday and 55 on Thursday which is healthier than we have had for many a year.

On behalf of Syston Town Council I wish all Syston residents and businesses a Happy New Year.

Christmas 2021 As previously stated there was not sufficient time to organise a Christmas Event in 2021, as we were unsure about the Covid situation when plans would have been put in place in the early stages of the year. Council are currently re-assessing resources and will make a decision very soon on the organising of an event this year.

Christmas Shop Window Competition 2021 Our local shops put on some wonderful

festive window displays in December, there were two prizes awarded, one for retailers and a separate category for charity shops. Members of the public were asked to vote for their favourites using an on-line survey.

The winners were voted by the public as Paper Moon and LOROS. A huge thank you to all shops and businesses in Syston for taking part and playing a part in creating a wonderful festive ambience in the town. Thanks also to all of you that took the trouble to vote.

Pavilion Reconfiguration and Refurbishment, Memorial Park Work has now started on this exciting project. There will be some disruption to the park facilities but this will be kept to a minimum where possible. Work is expected to be complete by 8th July 2022. Access to the park is still available.

Remembrance Sunday, 14th November 2021 Remembrance Sunday took place on 14th November. Syston’s Royal British Legion had asked for people to gather on Central Park this year where the service took place. The Deputy Lieutenant - Mr Richard Clowes was in attendance as well as local borough councillors, county councillors and local Scouts, Rangers and Brownie groups. Wreaths were laid at the war memorial by representatives.

Syston Band played the musical accompaniment to hymns as well as the last post and the National Anthem.

names and organisations of those laying wreaths.

RBL made the decision not to read out the names of the fallen on this occasion.

After the event, there was a social gathering held at the Malt House Suite, with food laid on and excellent entertainment provided by a Dame Vera Lyn style singer and also Syston Swing Band.

Overall the event was very well received by the public.

Pilgrimage walk – Leicester University On Remembrance Sunday in 2018, the University of Leicester embarked on a mission to honour those who lost their lives and made sacrifices during the War, with a commitment to lay 100 wreaths across memorial sites in Leicestershire and Rutland. In 2018, eleven current students laid wreaths in the local area, following a dedication service at the University with speeches by Sir David Attenborough and Sir Peter Soulsby. In 2019, a further 15 sites were covered as part of the project. In 2021, 56 sites were visited including, for the first time, Syston.

Mindless Vandalism Unfortunately as well as all the good that goes on in the town, we also have experienced some elements of selfish and antisocial behaviour, where wilful damage to Council equipment has been evident. All repairs have to be paid for out of Council funds, which means that it is the tax-payers that live in Syston ultimately paying the price. Please report any incidents of vandalism via our Love Clean Streets App; to the Council directly or to the Police. Here are some examples of the vandalism in Syston from November/December: Archdale Park Deliberate damage to a child’s swing using bolt cutters on Archdale Park. This left the chain in a weakened state and could have caused serious injury to a child if the link had broken while the swing was in use.

Public Toilets Recently, there have been a few instances of vandalism at the public toilets on the Melton Road car park. The Men’s toilet door sustained brute force, damaging the lock and door frame. There have also been instances of people

pulling toilet roll holders from the walls and more recently the soap dispenser in the ladies’ toilets pulled off the wall leaving soap all over the floor, leaving a dangerous slip hazard.

A plea from the Council is for everyone to please respect this public facility.

The toilets are kept open and serviced at considerable expense and having to pay for expensive repair bills after vandalism is causing budgets to be overspent which is ultimately a cost to you the tax payer.

Barkby Road Cemetery A huge thank you to our “Friends Group” who have theme decorated the Chapel throughout the year and also covered the Cemetery gates locking and unlocking over Christmas.

Plaque for Old School Bell Did you know, the bell located inside the chapel used to be the school bell for the original school in Syston on School Street. The bell was rescued after the school closed. The friends have arranged to have a plaque underneath it now, stating it’s origin.

Chairman’s Nominated Charity Fundraising has already begun to raise money for Loros.

In November, Council Officers held an SOS Charity Fashion Show.

A huge £470 was raised for LOROS from ticket sales and a raffle which was held on the night. Thank you to everyone who attended the event, bought clothes and to all the local businesses and individuals who generously donated towards our raffle.

Mental Health in Cricket – Interview with Opening up Cricket With bio secure bubbles and heavy game scheduling being a prominent fixture in modern cricket, mental health cases within cricketers at international and local level have seen a sharp rise. Major stars in the cricketing game such as Ben Stokes and Kate Cross have been very open with their struggles and its certainly not an issue at just elite level, but it transmits down to local level too.

Opening Up Cricket is a Mental Health and Suicide Prevention charity set up in memoriam of Alex Miller of Sefton Park Cricket Club who took his own life back in 2012. The organisation was set up in 2014 and founder Mark Boyns believes that being with the right group is vital for positive mental health.

He said: “One of the big themes that we cover in sessions with clubs is what we can do both individually but as teams and clubs to foster the right environment, He went on to say: “If someone shares something and it’s received well and they’re supported, then that’s an incredible thing that we can do for our fellow players and our friends.”

Mental health has become a key issue during the pandemic with player such as Cross being open with her struggles. Cross has been an Opening Up trustee for a number of years and Boyns states that cricket can be a tool for positive mental health.

He said: “Playing a sport such as ours gives things naturally to good mental health and it’s the role of everyone to make we be reminded of that.

He continued saying: “Those that don’t play team sport would look in and think what the attraction of dressing is in white and standing in a

field for six hours, but if we can say this is good for our mental health then we can move forward the conversation.”

Sunday Times Football Correspondent Jonathan Northcroft is also an Opening Up trustee and working within sport knows the effects of mental health in sport. He believes that Mark’s work in spreading the message has been remarkable.

He stated: “I think the work Mark has done in visiting so many clubs has left the message with people, He went on to say: “The reason for growth is because of the quality of Mark’s work and the appetite for the message is never ending as mental health is a continual process and support is needed.”

The growth that has occurred has seen Mark and his volunteers deliver over 350 sessions so far in the UK and in Australia, receiving a positive reaction from those reached.

Mark has made a platform to make sure that there is support for sports people whatever struggles they may be going through and to know that help is always there when needed most.

The message of Opening Up Cricket is simply to promote positive mental health through the use of sport and to make sure that what happened to Alex back in 2012 never happens again.

Towards the end of the 2021 season Syston Town C.C. were in discussion with the ECB regarding a minor administrative breach which resulted in a temporary withdrawal of Syston’s Clubmark status. Without any discussion with the club, the Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League took the decision to relegate Syston’s 1st XI to Division 1 for the 2022 season. This was done despite the problem being resolved immediately as per the ECB requirements, without the club being allowed to make any representation and without the league using the discretionary powers that it had in this matter.

The club made an appeal to the league but that fell on deaf ears and so the matter has now been raised with the ECB in the hope of reversing this decision.

However, the club may have to face the prospect, after 21 consecutive seasons, of losing its Premier Division status for one year at least.

accreditation will be regained and the club will fight hard to regain its top tier status. The club’s 2nd XI are unaffected by this ruling and will appear once again in 2022 in Division 3 East and the Sunday XI after gaining promotion, will feature in Division 2 of the Grantham & Melton Cricket Association.

The Syston Women’s team (in the photo) after a very successful first season, are going from strength to strength and will be entering three teams, two softball and one hardball, in the East Midlands Women’s Cricket League in 2022.

In addition the club will be fielding teams in the Leicestershire Junior Cricket League in the coming season at Kwik cricket, under 11 hardball and incrediball, under 15 and under 17 levels.

Winter nets are now underway for all age groups. The seniors are at the City Cricket Academy, Freeman’s Common, Leicester, the juniors are at Soar Valley School and the women are at Roundhill College.
