We welcome news for Barkby and Barkby Thorpe residents as the plan is published to deter rat-run traffic through the villages from the growing development of Thorpebury. There is also the less welcome news of the 960 houses closing in on Barkby from Syston and the likelihood of even more houses locally in the Charnwood Local Plan. And the reasons for the three month closure of Hamilton Lane Traffic Mitigation
A condition for the go-ahead for the 4500 houses of Thorpebury was that traffic from the new estates should not further congest the already busy roads of Barkby and Barkby Thorpe. Longer term there are new roads to be built to by-pass the villages but for now a set of traffic mitigation measures for the existing roads has been proposed by the County Council. These include a mini-roundabout at the junction of King St and Queen St. in Barkby Thorpe, a priority working chicane on the Beeby Road east of the Pochin School and a number of speed humps on Main St., Beeby Road and Queen St. BABTAG has welcomed these measures which have long in gestation but will continue to press for a 30 mph limit on Thorpe Lane by the cricket ground and a 20mph limit in the villages themselves.

Motorists travelling through Barkby Thorpe will be aware that a section of Hamilton Lane is currently subject to a three month closure. This is to facilitate the construction of two new road accesses into Phase 1 of Thorpebury from the Lane south of Hilltop Farm. Once this work is completed BABTAG understands that remedial work on the pinch and the signage for the southern chicane on Barkbythorpe Road will be undertaken. More Houses in the Local Plan

Following the Government Inspectors’ recommendations a public consultation is now taking place on the main modifications to the Charnwood Local Plan. These changes do not affect the controversial plan to build more than 1500 houses between Barkby and Syston which BABTAG has earlier opposed, But a new map is part of the consultation showing not only the proposed new developments but the full extent of the 4500 houses of Thorpebury. (See map above) It graphically illustrates why BABTAG feels that development beyond the 4500 houses overburdens and changes the character of our area.

As November arrives, Syston Town Centre is preparing to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the First and Second World Wars with a stunning display of handmade poppies. Visitors are invited to take a stroll through the town, where vibrant red and purple poppies will grace the area around Syston’s War Memorial, creating a poignant tribute in time for Remembrance Day on November 11th.
This heartfelt initiative was organised by the dedicated members of the U3A craft group, who encouraged family members and friends to lovingly craft and generously donate these poppies. Their collaborative effort showcases the community’s spirit and dedication to remembering the past. They still have quite a few poppies left, and if anyone is willing to make use of them, they are encouraged to get in touch with the U3A craft members. Each poppy symbolises not just loss, but also resilience, unity, and the importance of coming together as a community to honour those who fought for freedom.
Pat Glover, a member of the U3A craft group, expressed the significance of this initiative, stating, “While other villages have done similar projects for Remembrance, Syston has not, and I believe it is
essential that we do something to rectify that.” Her words reflect the community’s commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices made by both soldiers and animals during not just the First and Second World Wars, but all conflicts that the U3A support, are not forgotten.
In addition to the traditional red poppies, a special focus will be on the purple-crafted poppies, which serve to commemorate the countless animals that lost their lives during the war. This thoughtful addition to the display highlights the oftenoverlooked sacrifices made by animals in wartime, reminding us of their loyalty and bravery.
This initiative is not just about remembrance; it also provides a lovely opportunity for families to come together and reflect on the sacrifices of the past while fostering a sense of community.
As Syston Town Centre transforms into a sea of colour and meaning this November, it will undoubtedly serve as a touching reminder of the impact of war and the importance of remembrance.
So, make sure to take a wander through Syston Town Centre this month and immerse yourself in this beautiful tribute. It is a chance to pause, reflect, and connect with the stories of those who came before us, ensuring that their memories continue to live on in our hearts.
It’s getting to that time of year and Christmas items are already in the shops!!!!

Worryingly in contrast to the old map the new map omits all the areas of green wedge and green space within the perimeters of the development areas.
BABTAG has asked why they been omitted in its comments to Charnwood Council.
Still with the Local Plan, changes to the housing trajectory of the borough council mean that, assuming planning permission is gained, those sites that make up the 1500 houses will see house-building beginning as early as 2026 and 2027.

I am writing to you about why the BABTAG management committee feels that the Action Group has run its course and recommends that it should be wound up. The reason is that all the office bearers wish to stand down after many years in post and it has not been possible to find replacement candidates from within the committee several of whom also wish to stand down. It also seems an appropriate time in that the traffic mitigation measures for Barkby and Barkby Thorpe that BABTAG has fought for so long are likely soon to be implemented.
As those of you with longest memories will recall BABTAG was set up in 2008 to oppose the building of the North East of Leicester SUE (now Thorpebury) and to defend the integrity and rural setting of the villages of Barkby and Barkby Thorpe. When the argument over building was lost and Charnwood Council approved the 4500 houses scheme BABTAG adopted a monitoring role and has sought to hold the developers to all the conditions they had had to accept to gain overall planning permission Over the years that monitoring role has extended to a number of other housing proposals which may well see another 1500 houses on fields
close to Barkby and Barkby Thorpe. With BABTAG no longer operating who will keep wary eye on the developers? BABTAG has not been alone in defending the integrity of the villages and has worked closely with Barkby parish council to hold the Thorpebury builders to account and to oppose unwanted further encroachment. Given that four current members of the BABTAG management committee are on the parish councilI am sure that it will hold to those tasks in the years to come and keep the wider local community informed.

Enjoy Bonfire Night!
We still can get some nice days in November, however it’s time to batten down the hatches to be ready for the winter that lies before us.
The clocks have now gone back so we are allowed to have a bonfire on the allotments. I try to have mine around bonfire night: we have to be very careful as the allotments are surrounded by private dwellings - I just feel that if I have mine around bonfire night it won’t cause any upset, common sense also tells us not to leave one unattended.
My grandson loves to help when we have the bonfire, I think there’s a bit of caveman in all of us and poking a bonfire with a stick is quite a pleasurable thing to do. Wrap a couple of potatoes in some foil and place in the embers, they will be wonderful especially with some butter added. Please also check before you light to make sure there’s no hedgehogs nesting in there.
Something to look forward to is that usually by the end of this month we can have the first of the brussels sprouts, my favourite vegetable, although last year I didn’t get them until after Christmas. That was a bit of a disaster so this year I’ve set them earlier in the year hopefully all will be well for Christmas. Pick the brussels sprouts working from the bottom of the stalk upwards to make sure that all of the sprouts get a chance to swell. I also clear any of the lower leaves - this helps minimise pests.
Well, I don’t know if I’ve done right or wrong but I’ve started some broad beans off in trays and they’re ready to go in. I always feel sorry for anything I put out at this time of year as there’s only hard times ahead, but fingers crossed. However it’s not too late to take a chance and to put a row or two in the ground especially if you can cover them with cloches. I always also put a couple of dozen lettuce plants in at this time, these winter varieties if grown in a sheltered spot
can withstand the winter and I’ve been quite successful in the past; however, it is always best to have some protection on hand ready to protect them if needs. Savoy cabbages, another of my favourites, are doing well and thankfully I’ll have some to pick throughout the winter along with carrots and parsnips and swedes.
Now is a good time to check over the trusty wheelbarrow as it has to work hard over the next few months carting muck and compost about. Most of the leaves will have fallen by now, collect them up and make a leaf mould stack, I just stick them in a Dalek type black compost bin, I have a friend who has several trees in his garden and he kindly hoovers them up with his mower and then bags them for me - I also use them as a munch throughout the year and to cover any tubs of potatoes I have left for Christmas which helps stop them from getting frosted.
Garlic is a sore subject for me. I don’t know why and I don’t know what I do wrong. I just can’t grow it, fails every year, I’m now at the stage that I won’t buy any garlic to plant as it just seems a total waste of time and money yet embarrassingly for me my neighbours on the allotments grow it quite successfully!

Unfortunately, we had some flooding again on the 1st of October this year. The affected area was only limited to the Brookside (both sides) and didn’t really expand. Three cars (that we know of) were written off because of trying to drive through flood water.
The gauge on the Barkby Brook that the Environment Agency installed in the summer proved extremely useful for us. You can monitor the height of the brook from home to get an idea of what the brook is doing. Or use your phone camera to scan the QR code above left.
We know from this instance that the height of the brook can hit a height of 0.80m on the gauge before water starts to break its bank at the Brookside (club side). We know that it currently says the top of the normal range is 1.20m. We’ve sent our feedback to the EA to adjust this.
If you’re on Facebook, you should follow our Facebook page - “Syston Flood Wardens”. Or use your phone camera to scan the QR code left. Not only is it the best way to get in touch with us, it’s where we post frequent updates on flood alerts, current flooding, weather warnings, flooded and closed roads, with updates on getting the brook cleaned.
Desilting
The EA’s contractors did some preliminary cleaning at ‘Butchers Beach’ at the beginning of October, but this isn’t the end. The EA are due to come back to start the actual desilting of the brook, hopefully by the time you read this article they will have started. The area covered is around the Melton Road car park and along the Brookside. A road closure will be in place on Brookside (club side) between 28th October and 17th November, source: one.network. The area from Memorial Park to the railway bridge is coming later, the
date to be confirmed.
A huge thanks from us to everyone involved in getting this accomplished. We’ve been working really hard since January to get this done.
Be Flood Ready
You could say that it is ‘Flood Season’, where flooding could happen again. We, as well as other organisations, only have a limited number of sandbags available to distribute. While there is time, prepare now before it happens again. Twenty tonnes of sand, donated to Syston Town Council by Aggregates UK was delivered by Wanlip Sand and Gravel to the Barkby Road Cemetery in March 2024, this donation was arranged through Cllr Satish Visavadia.
The sand is for Syston residents to help protect their homes from flooding. Residents are asked to bring their empty sandbags to the Council, and these will be filled by the Estates team ready for collection. Vulnerable and less mobile members of the community will be provided with a door to door service, please call the Council on 0116 2607150 or email mailbox@systontowncouncil. gov.uk.
There are also the Hydro Snakes flood defence bags available from the Council and from Flood Wardens; the Hydro Snakes need to be saturated with water before use. Please be prepared and have your sandbags ready before a flood occurs.
Wicks also sell the hydrosnake and hydrosack sandbags.

We are always on the go at M.A.D.S (Mental health, Anxiety and Depression Support).
We have welcomed some new members to our group lately and it’s amazing to see people coming to us for that support. Sometimes we all need somewhere we can go for that support for Mental Health or even Loneliness.
We never stop at the group. We are forever coming up with new ideas or even bringing back old ones to get everyone’s brains and imaginations working. One of our sessions in September was all about being creative. We encouraged everyone to use their imaginations and work with Air Dry Clay to create anything they wanted. I even gave it a go myself and got involved. It was pretty messy but it’s great to get your mind ticking, so of course my first thought was to make a little turtle (pictured above) for my partner who loves turtles.
We had a variety of designs. One member made a Trinket Tray, I believe I also saw another member make a cute little dinosaur as well. The creativity coming from the members was amazing to see. After this we then used the following week to then paint them all once they had the week to fully dry and harden. We used Paint Pens which prevented too much mess and they do the job just as well as normal paint. I was very proud of how my little turtle came out (pictured right) so this gave me a great feeling of pride especially since I have never got creative with clay before so this was a win for everyone at the group. We received a lovely donation from a member which will help towards our regular refreshments which Tracey from Syston’s Tesco also helps us with regularly.
As we are now in November we are trying to come up with more ideas for the group and we are continuously working hard to find some form of funding and donations to help with our group.
We are also looking for people who can come to visit the group and give
them a talk or to even get them doing something different.
In the past we have had the Police, Fire Service, Animal Therapy, Pete Lewin’s Newfoundlands, Carl Holyland with a short Self Defence lesson and a Hypnotherapist to name just a few. If you or you know someone who can come along and talk to our group or provide and activity for them to do, please contact us via the details below.
We want to do more for our community and we want to help more people in the battle with Mental Health or even Loneliness.
We have more coming up for the remainder of this year so keep those eyes peeled for the next update!
If you think you can help us in any way then please get in touch with us at: madsgroup@yahoo.com or call us between Monday and Friday from 9am to 5pm on 0777 469 5160 (You can find us in the Green Pages Directory)
Please be aware that we are not healthcare professionals. We have our own experiences on many levels with various forms of Mental Health and we do what we can to signpost people to the right professionals that we are in touch with so that we can help nudge them in the correct direction to getting back on their feet.

Just two weeks before the start of International Day of Sign Languages celebrated on Monday 23rd September, The Pharmacie Arms generously opened its upstairs room to host a new initiative: Syston Sign Club. This gathering invites both d/ Deaf and hearing individuals to come together, practice their British Sign Language (BSL) skills and enjoy a relaxed evening in good company. Syston Sign Club is not just for the fluent; anyone with a basic grasp of BSL is welcome to join. The main rule of the evening is simple- voices off, hands on! It’s a unique opportunity for
those curious about learning BSL to dip their toes in the water. For beginners, there will be a chance to be introduced to the basics, including the BSL fingerspelling alphabet. The club will be hosting a Deaf Awareness presentation on 20th November, introducing you to the culture, language and the essentials of respectful communication. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and attendees can enjoy a drink or snack while practising their skills. Granted, signing while snacking may present a few challenges, but it’s all part of the fun and a great way to bring people together.
Do you know British Sign Language, or do you know someone who does? Spread the sign!
Syston Sign Club runs every third Wednesday of the month from 6-8 pm and whether you stay for the full two hours or just fancy dropping by for a quick pint and a bit of signing, everyone is encouraged to join in. For more information, contact the club via email at SystonSignClub@gmail.com, or visit Facebook ‘Syston Sign Club’.

It is with the greatest pleasure that Syston Methodist Church welcomes its new minister, the Reverend Kim Alexander who joins us from South Africa and will be sharing her ministerial responsibilities between Syston, Birstall and Rothley. We look forward to getting to know her and for her to get to know us and the wider community of Syston.
Following a successful summer activities, Syston Methodist Church has an interesting calendar of events for autumn and winter in the run up to Christmas.
During the spring and summer, we held a quiz night in March that was well attended and enjoyed by all participating teams and a night of joyful music led by the Ratcliffe Chorale and Loughborough Male Voice Choir. Our usual Easter activities included the Good Friday craft activities for children as well as the celebratory Easter Sunday service. We have held Praise in the Park in April and August, which is open to anyone to join. The annual cream tea followed by Songs of Praise in July was a success and we held our Harvest Festival in September.
The church is not just open for
worship on Sundays, there is a range of regular weekly activities that take place.
There is a Holy Communion at 10.00am on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, everyone is welcome.
There is a Fellowship group that meets alternate Wednesdays and a study group that meets in the church Link building at 10.00am on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month.
A coffee morning is held every Saturday from 10.00am to 12.00noon in the Meeting Place at the Hub selling homemade cakes with tea or coffee.
The members of the church have generously supported several charities and people taking part in charitable events such as Action for Children and Christian Aid.
One member and her daughter virtually pedalled 516 miles along the spectacular North Coast route to support LOROS.
Another member undertook and completed ‘Race the Sun’ consisting of a 36 mile bike ride, 9.5 mile hike up Pen-y-Fan, 2 mile Kayak in the Brecon Beacons – All in one day in aid of Action Medical Research. Credit where credit is due!
Here’s a huge pat on the back for some of ‘Syston's very own Flood Wardens’ who went that extra mile or two, you have been truly tested, spectacular thunderstorms, heavy rain, more rain, sun, rain, sun, another thunderstorm, then - yep rain!!!! ‘Syston‘s Flood Wardens‘ are local residents just like you, who volunteer and are ‘doing a great job, they keep people informed because they care’, if you volunteers are reading this, thank you for your Facebook updates and physically being out there, residents appreciate you, there’s not many who would turn out in the rain for free to monitor the brook, but volunteer Flood Wardens are just that, volunteers, we shouldn’t (and don’t) expect them out in the rain 24/7!
The local authorities didn’t disappoint the ratepayers these past months - “oh yes they did” little evidence of anything until the recent ‘makeover’s removing vegetation’ then we had another long wait, it's been a case of ‘pass the brook, to you, to me, no back to you’ for months! We have repeatedly reminded them that October was the anniversary of Syston’s first flood episode in 20 years, but hey it happened again down at Brookside on October 1st, so here we are still waiting for the major de-silt to clear the blockages (this month)!!
We’re nice people, those we’ve met working for the Environment Agency, our Borough & County Councils are nice people, but sadly on a cold, wet, unpredictable stressful night it’s hard to remember that when Syston has been kept waiting so long for the job ‘to get done’!! Before you ask, yes, our local MP was ‘chased’ - but let’s make this very clear, there was no running around the town square (you have to laugh else you’d weep), it was promised that Syston and its residents would be a top priority if re-elected, hello there, hello, best say nothing’!
Like many of you our good will has taken a really hard knock of late, and breath, Syston we can do this, the wheels of bureaucracy turned very very slowly, meetings about meetings, annual holidays (we wish), then more meetings, oh and ignore the ratepayers whilst you’re at it kinda meetings, but they (local authorities) all agreed at a meeting which we attended, that they didn't want to cause ‘unnecessary distress or anxiety’ to any residents in Leicestershire, they (local authorities) recognise that signing up for flood alerts is ‘not’ for everybody! Oh, unlike our own town council who appear to have missed the point by displaying signage to ‘sign up for flood alerts’ this is not the start of the third petition by any means, but another opportunity to politely request our ‘town council to please do the right thing for residents mental health’, plus those social media posts relating to de-silt timelines aren’t helping, they’d be very good, if they were correct!!
A de-silt is one thing, vegetation removal is another, residents have been given false hope these past weeks!
Readers, the Syston Community Flood Group (SCFG) have your best interest at
heart, they happily acknowledge our town councils involvement in getting the de-silt here, isn’t that what town/parish councils are supposed to do, work on behalf of the ratepayers, but there's also residents who have been involved in the process, and that continues!
As always contact Syston Community Flood Group systonfloodgroup@gmail. com or Facebook if you (or a group of you) can physically get stuck in when water levels permit and help us. Syston mortals, nor anyone else, can control what falls from the sky, but we can help get it through the town and work with the EA where possible along it’s route, let's keep the water actually moving, like it used to!
Nearly there, not forgotten you, a shout out to admin who have posted useful stuff along the way on Facebook on behalf of the Syston Community Flood Group, not every day, but when it mattered most, (sometimes a picture of their high-tech rainfall measuring device, yep, a flower vase, straight sided of course) we thank you.
Lastly. Let's see the brook de-silted, spend Christmas a little happier in the knowledge it’s done and clear, then start 2025 knowing how to ‘empathise’ with others and help residents in the community ‘by making a difference’ to Syston.
If you can be anything (even though it’s blooming hard at times) be kind!
M & K Concerned Residents
The Stn arranged to meet with our amazing flood wardens for a photograph on the Millennium bridge to say, congratulations and thank you for all the hours they have put in helping residents since October 2023 when the Barkby Brook first broke its banks for the first time since 1993 and flooded homes in the centre of the town.
Unfortunately, the Brook broke its banks again on 2nd January 2024 and caused even more damage to peoples homes, some of whom are as yet not back in their homes and some won’t be back until March 2025!
Ree Nugent, Syston Flood Warden Coordinator has been Syston’s Flood Warden since 2016 and is the most diligent person you could meet. She along with her son Maxwell and Tim Lewin all pictured above have been monitoring the Brook ever since. Going out in the middle of the night checking the level of the brook and alerting
The Syston Community Flood Group raised concerns with their combined authorities contacts earlier in the year about ‘Meadow Lane‘ not being included in the 2024 major de-silt, the authorities lack of funds/manpower/ residential property’s along this stretch seems to be their reasoning for Meadow Lane not making the priority list (readers the EA do have a lack of funds, which equals insufficient staff, and sadly that impacts us, again it’s not the individuals who turn up to do the works fault, it’s the system, so be kind)!
But, here’s the ‘but’…..if the blockages already in the watercourse adjacent to Meadow Lane continues to grow, then the road surface drains in the area will also back up if their end destination was the brook and not S/Trents main drainage system (we’re not civil engineers so forgive us if the terminology isn’t correct hopefully you’ll get the idea)!
Here's quotes taken from recent official correspondence sent to the group “desilting and other work to improve a river channels ability to increase flow does form an important part of the work to reduce the risk of flooding”…..”flood risk management has to achieve the greatest benefit to people and property” …. (readers, we know Barkby brook is a brook, for the EA purposes we have to call it a river!)
So when taking a stroll down the lane and you and the dogs feet are getting wet, just remember that water came directly from the brook (river) because it’s no where else to go, it can’t make it to the Wreake!
We will continue to stress the urgency of these blockages to the EA as it does affect the wider community, Meadow Lane is important just like the centre of Syston, each needs to be clear to be totally effective!

The other three flood wardens, Cllr Ian Hayes, Neil Skinner and Sarah Cavendish, unfortunately, were not available to be in the photograph, so we thank them too.
Congratulations to the Syston Flood Wardens, who received a special Charnwood Community Heroes award for working tirelessly to keep residents safe and keeping them informed when there is flooding in the area.

Radfield Home Care Leicester partners with Syston and District Volunteer Centre to Provide Essential Transport Services
Radfield Home Care Leicester has teamed up with the local charity, Syston and District Volunteer Centre, to offer much-needed transportation support to vulnerable members of the community. This partnership is making a significant impact by providing crucial transport services to elderly, infirm, and rurally isolated individuals across the area. With growing concerns over accessibility for those living in rural areas or with mobility issues, Radfield Home Care Leicester stepped forward with an innovative solution. The home care provider is offering its carers as volunteers to support Syston and District Volunteer Centre’s existing services. This collaboration ensures that those in need, particularly the elderly and isolated, have a reliable means of transportation for essential journeys, including medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social activities.
For many elderly and infirm residents, getting out and about can be a challenge. In rural areas, this challenge is even more pronounced due to limited public transport options. By pooling their resources, Radfield Home Care and Syston and District Volunteer Centre are alleviating this issue, ensuring no one in the community is left stranded.
Sona Bharkhada, Director at Radfield Home Care Leicester, shared her thoughts on the partnership: "We’ve always been committed to supporting the well-being of our clients and the broader community. When we learned about the challenges faced by residents with limited mobility, we knew we could help. Our carers have built strong relationships with the people they care for, and now they are extending that care by volunteering to drive those who need assistance."
This partnership is a win-win for all involved. Radfield carers, who already
have a deep understanding of working with vulnerable groups, are well-placed to offer both the practical and emotional support that makes a difference. Their familiarity with clients’ specific needs ensures that those receiving assistance feel safe and comfortable during their trips.
Syston and District Volunteer Centre established since 1977 has been dedicated to providing transport for those in need within the local communities, but the increasing demand has put pressure on their resources. Working alongside Radfield has allowed them to expand their reach.
Paul Lomas, Chairman of the board of Trustees at Syston and District Volunteer Centre, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration: "The support we’ve received from Radfield Home Care has been invaluable. Their willingness to volunteer their time and carers has allowed us to reach more people and provide a more personalised service. Many of the individuals we help are unable to use public transport, and this partnership is helping to restore their independence."
As the partnership grows, Radfield Home Care Leicester and Syston and District Volunteer Centre are looking at ways to further develop their efforts. Discussions are already underway to explore other volunteer opportunities and enhance services for the community.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring the most vulnerable members of society can access the transportation they need. Both organisations are committed to continuing their work and making a lasting impact on Leicester’s rural and urban populations.
The collaboration between Radfield Home Care Leicester and Syston and District Volunteer Centre exemplifies the power of community partnerships. By working together, they are helping to address one of the key challenges faced by vulnerable individuals, lack of access to essential services, while
fostering a sense of belonging and care within the community.
Residents in need of transport support or those wishing to volunteer can contact Syston and District Volunteer Centre for more information on 0116 260 7888.

ARIES March 20 - April 19 LEO July 22 - August 22
Some confusion could actually be helpful as it can open your mind to creative possibilities! So be prepared to go with the flow and try not to force issues which are likely to rectify themselves. You're in a highly sensitive phase and tend to see things from an extreme idealised viewpoint! Being more practical and forgiving helps you.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
The Full Moon in your chart pushes you to tie up some loose ends in your life or this will be decided for you! Sometimes it's wise to just accept what's happening rather than resist and expend precious energy. Happily your cash affairs go from strength to strength and your popularity is on the rise. Yes, you really can't go wrong.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
Jupiter in your sign right now brings many blessings and gives you the edge in various ways! Your business sense is sharper for a start and you're in a friendly and outgoing mood. Travel is also likely, whether just short-term trips or a trip further afield, maybe a holiday or mini-break? Either way, everything is going just so well.
CANCER June 21 - July 21
Mars zipping through your sign is making you quite feisty and determined at times! It's also inspiring you to come up with an alternate way of making money, such as a side hustle or hobby job. You're thinking and dreaming big but it's others who bring you something new and original; you do have the stamina to follow through.
In many ways, your life is calm and rather quiet. However, it's as though you're caught in the eye of a storm and all chaos is breaking out around you! Whilst you can only stand and watch for now, you have plenty of time to consider options and opportunities that may arise as a result. Spending time alone really does work well for you.
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22
You know that you just need to concentrate and work hard for what you really want as well as hold that special dream close to your heart, for things to work out! However, all this proves to be more difficult than you'd ever imagine with just so many distractions. You also need to rest before you take your next steps.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
You'd like to get something off your chest and know that this will just feel so good and bring much relief, simply liberating! But you wonder if you dare really being as it means risking upsetting the apple cart. Everything that you do seems challenging in the sense that it demands hard work and doesn't quite flow right. Go easy.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 21
You know that you have to reach out and give others the benefit of your knowledge, for this will make a world of difference to them. You're in the mood to indulge a loved one with a special gift or holiday – or both! And this spices up the romantic feeling between you. Trips outdoors, nature and animals give your life quality.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 20
You're in a highly personal mood where your own thoughts and feelings are of paramount importance although what others think and feel are also most relevant! And so you are picking your way through a quagmire of dilemmas and having to sort through some confusion. Deep down, you know it'll work out.
CAPRICORN Dec 21 - Jan 19
Power issues and responsibilities have been uppermost in your mind but your mood and attention now turns to matters of the heart! But do take things slowly being as you need to focus on communicating more effectively if you are to win the feelings of others. They can't always second-guess so make yourself clear.
AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 17
Although you know the score and just what has to be done in your life to get things sorted, in practice this seems almost impossible to achieve. For starters you have your work cut out and won't seem to have a moment to yourself. Your dreams also seem larger than life and over the rainbow. So just take things a little slower.
PISCES Feb 18 - March 19
As you focus on your emotional world, you realise that you need to reach for a few more dreams and help them to manifest. For up until recently you've been concentrating on work issues and making your world a little more stable. Deep down you know that you feel a little insecure! However, it really is time to branch out now.

As winter approaches, now is the time to look at building up our immune systems to help prevent colds and flu symptoms. We have produced this article in collaboration with Raj at the Body Store.
As always please seek medical advice before taking any herbal remedies if you have any condition which is of concern. There are a lot of remedies to assist the immune system – In this article we are going to focus on: Echinacea, Elderberry, Vitamin C. Echinacea (echinacea augusfi Folia, echinacea purpurea). Echinacea’s active compounds enhance immune function due to various mechanisms of action such as; increasing the production of white blood cells (when they are low); stimulating activation of white blood cells and boosting the production of various immunepotentiating compounds. It is considered
to be the prime remedy for the immune system. Echinacea works by balancing the immune system so that it works efficiently. This means that you are less likely to catch colds, and may be less prone to allergies. It is best taken in a maintenance dose over a period of time to improve immune function. Although it appears that echinacea is most effective taken at the onset of an infection, if the herb is to be used long-term many experts suggest that a one to two week break be taken every eight weeks or so. Also, those suffering from leukaemia or HIV should consult a doctor before using Echinacea. Do not take if you are taking immunosuppressant medication or if you are hypersensitive to Echinacea preparations.
Elderberry (sambucus nigra). These beautiful dark purple/black berries are well known as a delicious ingredient in drinks, providing a dense source of nutrients alongside the tart and stimulating taste.
Black elderberries contain large quantities of flavonoid and anthocyan glycosides, plus essential oils, vitamin C, B complex and minerals. It is a good

source of antioxidants. Like Echinacea, it can stop viruses from spreading however it can’t stop viruses infecting cells in the first place which echinacea can. The two herbs can work well together.
Studies show that oral administration of elderberry extract reduces the duration of influenza symptoms from an average of six days down to 48 hours. Vitamin C is often called the master immune nutrient, because of its essential role in immune function. Many studies have shown vitamin C to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms, and some research suggests it may reduce the risk of catching a cold (although results of prevention studies have been mixed). Among other relevant effects, vitamin C increases white blood cell function, interferon production and antibody activity. Vitamin C requirements are higher during infection.

Joint Service
As is customary when there are five Sundays in a month the congregations of St Hilda’s and St Peter and St Paul’s Churches meet together for worship and fellowship. Sunday 29th
September was one such occasion when we met in St Hilda’s Church. The service was one of thanksgiving for all that we receive and the singing was enthusiastic!
After the service we enjoyed fellowship and a great spread of delicious cakes.
The next combined service will be on Sunday 29th December in St Peter & St Paul’s church in Syston. Harvest
October 6th
St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Syston celebrated their Harvest service. Most of the hymns were traditional and well known so
the singing was joyful and uplifting. Offerings of tinned and packeted goods were received and will be shared with the food bank.
The church was beautifully decorated as members of the congregation had taken responsibility for various window sills and shelves to fill with their own floral decorations.
An inspiring decoration was made round the font which everyone admired.

A huge thank you to those that read the last article on the work Hari does on free classes in mental health, yoga and sound healing. He is a gifted healer working on all modalities of day to day lifestyle stresses. Many people of all ages frequently seek advice on how to maintain a healthy body and achieve a sense of balance in their lives. These are deeply personal topics, and different approaches are needed for men and women, as they respond and interact with their surroundings in distinct ways. However, a universal truth applies: balance between opposing forces is essential for both emotional and physical well-being.
In today’s world, there is a noticeable dominance of Yin energy — the more receptive, inward-focused aspect of life. By contrast, Yang energy, which is active and outwardly directed, also plays a crucial role. An excess of either energy can create imbalance, potentially affecting a person’s health, mindset, and emotions. Achieving a middle ground, often through spiritual practices such as yoga, meditation, and holistic healing, is key to maintaining equilibrium.
The Basics of Ayurveda and Doshas
One effective approach to restoring balance is through the ancient system of Ayurveda. This holistic science is based on the concept that every individual is governed by three doshas: Kapha, Vata, and Pitta. These doshas are energies that influence not only physical health but also mental and emotional wellbeing. Each person has a unique constitution, usually a combination of two doshas, with one being more dominant.
By identifying one’s dominant dosha, it becomes possible to tailor a diet, lifestyle, and yoga practice that supports their specific needs. This personalised approach allows individuals to manage how they react to their environment and helps prevent potential ailments that may arise due to imbalances in the body.
Lifestyle to Dosha Types
At the upcoming Himalayan Healing retreat, participants will be introduced to the core principles of Ayurveda, along with Ayurvedic massage, Reiki, and yoga practice. This retreat, taking place from 21st to 23rd February at Nanpantan Hall in Loughborough, aims to help individuals realign with their natural state of balance and well-being.
One of the key aspects of Ayurvedic healing is understanding how food, exercise, and daily habits can be tailored to an individual’s dosha. While general dietary guidelines are helpful for everyone, subtle adjustments can make all the difference. For example, someone with a Vata dominance may benefit from warm, nourishing foods, while a Pitta-dominant individual might require cooling, soothing foods to maintain balance.
Knowing one’s dosha also provides insight into potential health issues and how they can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes. This also extends to yoga practices, with specific postures being better suited to different doshas, enabling participants to achieve harmony in

It was a lovely afternoon with all the tables set out with beautiful table cloths and vintage tea cups and saucers, side plates and three tiered cake stands filled with a wonderful range of sandwiches, scones, and cakes.
There was a DJ playing music from the 1950/60s which encouraged lots of people to get up and dance plus lots of singing along.
Everyone had a great time!
The Thrummy Drummer is a
both mind and body.
Chakras and Emotional Balance
Energy healing, particularly Reiki, is another powerful tool for achieving balance and complements Ayurvedic practices. By understanding how one’s dosha influences the body’s energetic system, it becomes easier to identify which chakras may require more attention. Chakras are energy centres within the body, and when properly aligned, they allow energy to flow freely, promoting overall health and emotional well-being.
At the Himalayan Healing retreat, Reiki techniques will be introduced to help cleanse and activate the chakras. When the chakras are in harmony, the benefits ripple through both physical and emotional health, leading to a more balanced life.
Embarking on a Journey to Wellness
For those seeking emotional balance, the first step is to assess their current diet and lifestyle. Are these choices aligned with their body type and energetic needs? With some guidance, it is possible to make small but impactful changes that can lead to long-lasting harmony.
Anyone interested in learning more about Ayurveda, Reiki, and holistic healing is invited to attend Himalayan Healing, which offers a perfect environment to reset, restore, and rejuvenate. The retreat will provide deep relaxation alongside personalised Ayurvedic practices and energy healing techniques to support participants in achieving a balanced and vibrant life.

Up to four million pumpkins are brought tocarve and display overHalloween with the edible flesh of many being discarded as waste and ending up withmost of the lanterns in landfill. This produces an additional 18,000 tons of landfill waste directly attributable to the Halloween festivities.
In Leicester and Leicestershire used pumpkins need not be thrown in the bin after Halloween you can smash them to make compost on your allotment, at school or home.
Composting helps the environment and improves soil quality your school can help us to grow food. Collect pumpkins and join the Pumpkin Smash at Stokes Wood Allotment Leicester, Stokes Dr, Leicester LE3 9BR.
Local schools, clubs, community

For decades I wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle. Yes, I admit I did have a Harley –Davidson in mind but one has to start somewhere.
That somewhere was with ‘Leicestershire Motorcycle Training’ in Syston, meeting Karen at Elizabeth Park car park in Thurmaston. My first lesson was how to get the bike off its stand! Phew, even that took some doing. Afterwards I was encouraged to ‘get my leg over’ which was an overdue invitation. Then off I go into the distance and fast approaching kerb and playing field grass. Ooooops, bit of a hairy moment.
My bike may look less impressive than a Harley but boy does it shift.
Next came slow riding technique, U turns (mind the cones) and very importantly stopping. Thankfully I only fell off twice that day and bruises can be seen on request and in writing if you dare (I bet there is one of you who will)! After several hours in full protective gear (see photo) I was mentally and physically exhausted.
My next lesson the following day had to be postponed and boy was I thankful. Having recovered a fair amount overnight my hands, wrists, shoulders, knees and back still ached. The following week and my final session, I was back to awesome and to Elizabeth Park for last two modules of my course before the open road. It took a short time of riding around car park (without incident I may add) and at speed using bike’s throttle and brakes to control this heavy machine and acclimatise myself to motorcycle riding again when used to driving a car. Having completed the training we took to the open road – wow, what a buzz. Despite the helmet and safety wear restrictions, riding a motorbike was the most phenomenal sense of freedom and speed I have known. Traversing through Syston, Queniborough, Barkby, East Goscote through traffic and all the hazards of urban biking I had so much fun and a truly memorable experience.
I am more aware now of other types of road users and their training (or not) which I have incorporated into my daily car driving.
If you see a cyclist of any sort think of
me, be patient and ensure you leave as much space as you can between them and you. The motto of this piece is if you want to do it – just DO IT NOW ! My next adventure is in progress so never delay – act NOW and live that dream.

Hello all, well what a year.
First we were awarded the prestigious Green Flag award (one of only two in Charnwood I believe).
Secondly the cemetery was awarded the top award from the National Cemetery awards – and
thirdly I’m awarded the community heroes award, see picture above showing Ros with the Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE, amazing work when you consider their only three of us plus the groundsman who work tirelessly, to look after your loved ones. All the hard work is now done. We just have to maintain it. If you feel you can spare half an hour to an hour whenever during the week to help us, please contact Catherine Voyce
at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150. Likewise, if you wish to hire the chapel or if you wish to donate and have a standard rose on the runways in memory of a loved one.
The Green Flag assessors suggested that we could find an area as a wildflower garden. We have designated an area at the back to the far right of the cemetery under the trees and surrounding the fountain and the bird tables.
At the last Amenities Committee meeting of the Syston Town Council the subject of the Tea Lights was raised. Following a report by the Leicestershire Fire Service, Fire Safety Officer, the committee decided that they would look again at the fire risk report as soon as it was possible with a view to reinstating the use of lighted tea light candles. I will keep you updated on this.
I was going to put a photo of the cemetery award on here but at the last minute I noticed a mistake so I’ll hopefully put it on next month.
Over the next few weeks we will be digging the ground over and making it ready to put the seeds in ready for next year.
Have a good month everybody. Ros.
Winter Nights are here! Please be safe at night and wear something light while out walking. Be Seen! Cyclists please ensure you have working lights switched on and wear reflective garments!
Residents and businesses in Charnwood are being urged to consider their flood risk and whether they need to take steps to protect their properties. The borough council has put together some key information to help residents and businesses understand the issues around flooding.
It follows flooding incidents in the borough in recent years. In January 2024, hundreds of homes and businesses in Charnwood were flooded internally after Storm Henk battered the country.
There are multiple agencies involved in preventing and responding to flooding incidents, including:
 the Environment Agency
Leicestershire County Council as the local lead flood authority and is also responsible for highways
borough and district councils like Charnwood
 the emergency services
other organisations like water and sewerage companies
Residents and businesses are advised to consider some of the following advice:
Sign up for free flood warnings from the Environment Agency so you can
keep up to date with the latest situation in your area. Visit www.gov.uk/sign-upfor-flood-warnings. You can also sign up to receive alerts by phone by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188
If your property has flooded before or you believe it could do so in the future, consider purchasing sandbags or any other flood prevention measures. Sandbags are available from some DIY stores and Blue Pages is a directory of companies which supply flood prevention products and services. It has been put together by the charity the National Flood Forum. Visit www. bluepages.org.uk
Consider creating a personal or business flood plan which sets out steps you can take now to better prepare yourself for flooding:
For personal flood plans visit: www. gov.uk/government/publications/ personal-flood-plan
For business flood plans visit www. gov.uk/government/publications/ preparing-your-business-for-flooding
Ensure your home has the proper insurance in place. If your property has a high risk of flooding, Flood Re may be able to help. It is an initiative between Government and insurers to make the flood cover part of household insurance policies more affordable. Visit www. floodre.co.uk
Do not travel through flooded areas. Six inches of water can cause you to lose control of your car and even shallow fast-moving water can sweep you off your feet.
Here are some other handy website addresses and phone numbers:
The National Flood Forum is a charity that offers advice and support. Its website is www.nationalfloodforum.org. uk and their phone number is 01299 403055.
www.charnwood.gov.uk/floodingcontains information, advice and signposting to other agencies
www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ environment-and-planning/flooding-anddrainage – this is Leicestershire County Council’s website section about flooding. The County Council is the local lead flood authority and is also responsible for local roads.
 Floodline helpline - telephone: 0345 988 1188 / textphone: 0345 602 6340 (Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
www.llrprepared.org.uk/be-aware/ flooding/ - contains information and advice about flooding.
A spokesperson for Charnwood Borough Council said: “We appreciate that flooding can have a devastating impact on residents and businesses. “We are encouraging people and businesses to be aware of the risk of flooding and, if appropriate, take some steps to improve protection for their properties.”

Everywhere I look I see adverts for upcoming sales - Black Friday and Cyber Monday - ‘deals’ are jumping out at me from all directions. Some of the prices seem too good to be truehow can I be sure I really am getting a good deal and not being scammed?
You’re not the only one eager to bag a bargain. The busiest shopping time of the year is also a busy time for
cyber criminals who use the spike in spending to disguise their scams as legitimate shopping sites. Fraudsters are also taking advantage of AI advances to help them produce accurate and professional-looking content to trick victims into giving away their financial details. It sounds like you’re aware there are risks when buying online and that scammers will try to tempt consumers with special offers, fake reviews and sought-after items at rock bottom prices. The good news is there are ways you can protect yourself and shop safely.

Expert, Kate Hobson, shares her top five tips to make sure you don’t end up with more, or less, than you bargained for during this busy shopping season -
1. Make sure you don’t feel rushed. Scammers will often create a sense of urgency by claiming it’s a limited offer or price which encourages you to act without taking as much time to consider the purchase.
2. Know who you are buying from – if buying from a company you have not used before, check reviews and previous customers’ feedback. If in doubt, don’t buy.
Email: info@thestarinn1744.co.uk
Tel: 01664 424 220
3. Be wary of suspicious web links. These may direct you to fake (but realistic- looking) websites. It is better to type in the website address yourself.
4. Don’t share any one-time codes that you’re sent when shopping online. These codes are used to confirm that you’re the one making the purchase, so don’t share them with anyone.
5. Avoid paying anyone you don’t know by bank transfer. Paying by credit card for single items costing £100 and over gives you legal protection if the goods do not arrive, are faulty, or do not match the description. Paying by credit or debit card for orders costing less than £100 also gives you protection using your card provider’s voluntary ‘Chargeback’ scheme.

A grant received via the Community Small Grant Scheme from Charnwood Borough Council, will help a new generation of sailors onto the water for the first time.
Syston Sailing Club carried out some taster sessions for a junior club this summer and has now officially launched its Splash and Sail sessions, designed to engage children, aged six years and above, in sailing skills through games and water-based fun. The initial sessions have been an overwhelming success, and thanks to a £750 grant from the Community Small Grant Scheme Charnwood Borough Council have enabled us extend this year`s sessions and to be back, bigger and better in 2025.
Rob Pocock, one of the Splash and Sail instructors, said: “The money will help to improve equipment and provide games, toys and amusements for the young people and help us to subsidise these fun sessions, allowing us to keep them affordable for all families.
“The children and everyone at Syston Sailing Club are delighted to get this backing from the council. It will help ensure we can bring more fun to more of the borough’s children, keeping them active, and teaching them invaluable water safety skills,” he added.
Splash and Sail activities are packed into two-hour sessions which include sailing dinghies with plastic bags, as well as hare and hound chases and
postman on the water, ball games, water pistols, learning to tie sailing knots, water sliding and jumping in to the lake. If it gets too windy, paddling and games on land take over from the sailing.
The team of instructors are all experienced sailors, with a range of qualifications in power boat handling, safety boat procedures, health and safety, safeguarding and dinghy instructing. All our qualifications are accredited by sailing’s governing body, the RYA.
The dates for Splash and Sail sessions for 2025 will be released next year –keep an eye out on Syston Sailing Club’s website or social media channels for details or email: Syston.sailingclub@outlook.com
