Over the summer months, we will be looking after the various planters we have around town and will be looking forward to seeing how it all comes along. We will also be continuing to work in the background with Charnwood Borough Council on our long term goal of creating a welcoming, inclusive community garden space on the land off Glebe Way.

Grow Give Live and a team of volunteers spent a very pleasant morning in June planting up three big planters outside the community centre in Syston with some beautiful flowers. These will attract much needed pollinators to the area, which will hopefully make sure our fruit and vegetables nearby produce lots of lovely fruit! We are pleased to be supporting Syston Town Council’s efforts in the East Midlands in Bloom competition; all the planters around town are looking fabulous.

We are enjoying seeing the fruit and vegetables planted around Syston begin to flourish; there’s signs of fruit developing on the strawberry plants at the station, and the herbs are really looking well. As a reminder, the

People Focused Home Care Business Offers

FREE Grocery Collection

Radfield Home Care Leicester based in Syston is offering FREE grocery collection for people aged 65 years and above in the local community this June and July. As we move into the summer months, we want to limit the amount of strenuous physical activity that the elderly do as a result of getting groceries during the hottest part of the day. This initiative is an effort to reduce the risk of heat stroke and dehydration which is a common problem among older people in the hot weather and can be fatal if left untreated.

It is estimated that 2,803 people aged 65 years and over died due to the heat in England in 2022.It is foundthat there is a general reduction in the thirst sensation as you get older, meaning that many people are unaware that they may need to drink more fluids. We would like to familiarise the local community of the symptoms to look out for and what to do if you’re concerned someone may have a hydration

issue.

Dehydration symptoms you may see:

Sometimes those experiencing conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s may not be able to remember when they last drank water, or even register that they are thirsty at all. This means that

 Prolonged weakness

 Becoming light headed/faint when standing

Dehydration symptoms you may not see:

Like many illnesses, most of the symptoms are invisible to third parties. This can make things slightly difficult. However, if you deploy a sensitive, diplomatic approach, you may get someone to open up to what they’re experiencing. Here are some of the dehydration symptoms you may not see:

 Dark urine

 Muscle cramps

 Heart palpitations

 Dry mouth

 Feeling thirsty

 Feeling tired

occasionally it’s up to others to help achieve healthy drinking and spot the symptoms of dehydration. A bit of extra due diligence could save someone’s life. Here’s what to look out for if you suspect someone may be dehydrated:

 Dry lips, nose or eyes

 Confused/sluggish behaviour

 Nausea/vomiting

 Rarely using the toilet

If left untreated, severe dehydration can be serious and can cause seizures, brain damage and even death.

What you can do:

Radfield Home Care believes that the best way to deal with hot weather is to remain hydrated and stay cool. It is important to limit your direct exposure in the sun which may cause heat strokes and heat exhaustion. You can remain cool within your home: Continues on page 3

move to a cooler place such as a room with air conditioning or somewhere in the shade

close blinds and curtains on windows that are exposed to direct sunlight during the day

turn off lights and electrical equipment that are not in use

remove all unnecessary clothing like a jacket or socks

apply cool water by spray or sponge to exposed skin, and using cold packs wrapped in a cloth and put under the armpits or on the neck can also help.

Some clever tactics to get people to rehydrate:

Get them to eat food that is full of water such as tomatoes, melon, or cucumber

Make drinking fluids a social thing, offer a cup of tea or coffee

 Offer drinks during meal times

If you are concerned about symptoms, or they are worsening, seek medical advice by contacting NHS 111.

If symptoms haven’t improved after rehydration treatment then it’s time to visit the GP or in the case of a medical emergency call 999 if:

 You’re feeling unusually tired

 You’re confused or disoriented

Any dizziness when you stand up does not go away

You have not urinated all day

Your pulse is weak or rapid

 You have seizures

The above could be signs of severe dehydration that need urgent treatment.

Declan’s Diary

17 years ago I was told my seven year old son, Declan, would be unlikely to make his 18th birthday as he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Since then he has lost the ability to walk, stand, use of his arms, ability to turn his head, fought pneumonia several time, survived sepsis twice, had a seven hour operation to insert spinal rods to protect his vital organs and got through the Covid pandemic unscathed, all with a smile and grace.

In May we found out his body is now too weak to fight, too weak to cope with the harsh heart medication that was helping him stay alive, too weak to see 2024.

Just like the last 17 years, Declan is dealing with this news with an inspirational outlook and grace. He is determined to make these last few months his best and to raise money for Loros Hospice along the way as his legacy.

I know that many of you hold Declan close to your hearts and will be saddened by this news. We would both like to thank everyone that has shown us both kindness over the years. Every door opened, smile given, kind words said have been much appreciated. Alex and Declan

St Peter and St Paul CE Academy, Celebrates ‘Exemplary Behaviour’ in Maintaining ‘Good’ Ofsted Rating

Pupils at St Peter and St Paul Church of England Academy in Syston demonstrated their ‘thirst for learning’ to Ofsted inspectors during the inspection on the 29th and 30th March.

standard of teaching across the school. However, we are particularly proud that they have also commended the school on the opportunities for pupils to develop their talents and interests, including through sports and the arts, as well as the range of support provided for our pupils with special educational needs.

Report highlights included:

Pupils at this school are polite and respectful. They show good manners as they go about their school day. They describe the school as a very positive environment. They say it is one in which they feel safe and happy.

Teachers have very high expectations of pupils. Teachers encourage pupils to sit up, answer questions and ‘track the speaker’. This helps pupils develop good learning behaviours, which, in turn, helps them learn.

The academy, part of Rise Multi Academy Trust, are delighted to have retained its ‘Good’ grading, with pupils’ behaviour identified as ‘exemplary’. Inspectors observed how ‘pupils truly do demonstrate the school's three values of respect, honesty and perseverance’ and how ‘leaders have ensured that there is a focus on teaching pupils how to behave’.

Pupils are kind to each other and accepting. They know that derogatory language or bullying is not acceptable. Staff are sharp to deal with these rare incidents, if and when they occur.

Pupils develop a thirst for learning. They come to school excited about the new things they will learn. There are ample opportunities for pupils to develop their talents and interests.

Teachers help pupils develop to be resilient in their setbacks. As a result, pupils will often say ‘it is not I can't, but it is I can't yet'.

The overwhelming majority of parents and carers hold positive views about their children’s experiences at the school.

Welcoming the report, Claire Mulhern, Headteacher, said ‘We are very pleased that inspectors saw the many strengths of St Peter and St Paul CE Academy. They recognised our ambitious curriculum and high

July is the time when we start to see the fruits of our labours; the first raspberries, first of the runner beans and my favourite the first new potatoes - boiled with fresh mint and with a knob of butter, just fantastic! There’s nothing like harvesting your homegrown produce and enjoying it that same day, I do understand that today’s lifestyle for the majority of the population means this pleasure is rarely experienced, however I promise you that there is quite a difference.

Hopefully the sun is now shining, this doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to be done as the weeds continue to grow so regular hoeing is still essential. July is normally quite dry so watering shallow rooted plants is also still necessary plus it’s the time to start thinking of winter produce. So many people have an allotmentand tend it really well but come the end of October there is not a lot left to

harvest and July is the time to plant winter crops that will see you into the next year. I remember last year my runner bean crop failed and I re-plantedseeds in July. This was very successful and I picked runner beans right until the beginning of November when it got too cold for them to survive, the beans that were left over were allowed to dry and kept for seed for this year. Now is also a good time to plant carrots with the hope of dodging the dreadful carrot fly, it’s the time if you wish to have new potatoes for Christmas to get them planted. By the end of this month peas and broad beans are normally finished so there’s normally a little ground free to plant half a dozen seed potatoes, my experience with this is that the crop is not as successful as a spring planting, however what I did get were still lovely and the minimum amount of effort involved to have fresh new potatoes on Christmas Day is worth the effort.

Everyone is welcome to view the allotments if you have any interest in what goes on, a great time to do this will be on The Syston Allotments

2023 Open Day - this will take place on Saturday 12th August 10.00am till 3.00pm. All are welcome to pop along, have a cuppa and there’s usually cake, tombola, produce sale and a chance to have a chat to plot holders old and new.

We all look forward to seeing you there, regards to all Richard Thorpe 15b Syston allotments

Pretzels for Dinner

Your editor had the pleasure of booking to see the above play being performed by our local theatre group QT on Thursday 25th May.

We featured Jude Latham’s summary of the play in the May issue, which I will reprise here:

‘Pretzels for Dinner’, written by Janet Shaw, is a bitter-sweet comedy set in the present day which explores what happens when a woman loses her identity and becomes lost in domesticity. Ann Johnson knows exactly what happens, because it happened to her. One day she was a young woman with hopes, dreams and expectations. In the blink of an eye, she’s middle-aged with two grown-up children and her dreams lost somewhere between Asda and Iceland. Fate takes a hand and suddenly she’s on her own, lost in the unfamiliar world of high-tech gadgets and unpaid bills. Somehow, she has to act before she disappears into a quagmire of self-loathing and insecurity. With the help (or hindrance) from her somewhat interfering next-door neighbour Hilary, Ann starts to re-build her life. Can she find a way to start learning to love herself again and to re-kindle the life she once envisaged? Her husband Bill, although gone, is not going to let her achieve her goals

without trying to interfere for one last time. A poignant, and sometimes hilarious, look at life, love, marriage and unfulfilled ambitions, this play will have you laughing, wincing, and lamenting in equal measure. Well, this didn’t disappoint - my reaction was Wow! I haven’t been to a QT performance for a while and after my visit, thought that it has been too long!

Carpenters during the set changes was also a great way to keep the audience engaged with the play, and enhanced what we had just seen. This bitter-sweet comedy by Janet Shaw follows a wife and friend, with stay at home mum, Ann played by Gillian Bowler, horse racing mad Dad, Bill played by Jules Richard who takes his wife for granted and two teenagers; daughter Kara played by Kay Seddon and son played by Tobias Garner being typical teenagers taking their mother for granted, until Dad suddenly passes away due to the excitement while watching TV when his bet on the horses actually win!

The whole production is set in the Johnson’s sitting room and follows the family after the death of Bill, who appears as a ghost throughout the rest of the play.

The seven cast members shown in the picture above was taken after the performance on Friday 26th May with the writer of the play, Janet Shaw, she is the lady dressed in black behind the chair. The cast L-R: Keiron O’Brien, Jack Coulton, Tobias Garner, Jules Richard (seated), Gillian Bowler, Kat Seddon and Donna Gunn.

The cast were amazing and made the audience laugh from the beginning. The use of music by the

Ann begins to talk to her now deceased husband whom only she can see and hear! Ann’s friend and nosy neighbour, Hilary played by Jack Coulton, turns up to help Ann to restore her to the person she once was, Hilary has apparently done a course for every eventuality but pronounces them wrong, a very difficult thing to do intentionally. As in any comedy, timing is essential and these seven actors got it spot on! Considering that Jack, Tobias and Keiron are all new to acting and this being their first performance they were all amazing, so

The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Health and Wellbeing Partnership are expanding the number of Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés (previously Crisis Cafés) as they announce the next 10 cafés that are set to open. Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés offer local support for people who need immediate help with their mental health. The cafés are drop-in centres for anyone to come and talk about their mental health - no appointment needed.

Justin Hammond, Associate Director of Mental Health and Learning Disability at the Integrated Care Board, said: “This is an important project for the development of urgent mental health services across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Once all these 10 cafes open, we will have 25 cafés up and running across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. “These extra cafes mean that people who need urgent help can find this help more locally. People can simply drop-in to the cafes, so there is no need to get in touch with a GP or other service to make an appointment before getting help.”

Hello everyone. Well what beautiful weather we’re having - lovely blue skies and fluffy white clouds - and gorgeous sunshine.

Trying to keep on top of the weeds is a full time job haha, as too are all the dead flowers. This beautiful weather is good in one sense, but not where fresh flowers are concerned – they need constantly topping up with water. The cemetery grounds look beautiful as always. Neil is doing a fantastic job with all the paint work on the chapel. Thank you. The displays are calming down now after all the special dates but look out for the summer displays though.

Passengers may also have noticed the brand new benches, and a new set of notice boards. Hopefully our displays will be appreciated by

The Midland Railway pub and Syston Town News are our newest sponsors who we would like to thank and plaques showing their support will be installed soon.

To maintain good quality floral displays we would appreciate sponsorship from any business or local individuals.

If interested please get in touch through our facebook (Syston In Bloom/Station Adopters) page or with Marilyn by email on mbent83@icloud. com.

Grants from East Midlands Railway, Community Rail Network and a Charnwood Members Grant have enabled us to purchase the Amberol quality planters which should last for a very long time and providing we get enough funding for the plants, we should be able to provide long lasting floral displays throughout the year.

Help a Hedgehog Day

On Sunday 4th June, a lovely sunny day, Pat opened her beautiful garden for her final open day to raise funds for the Hedgehog hospital that she has run for over 24 years.

Glen Wakeling Crowned Regional Winner in National Heating Installer Awards for Fourth Time

18 The Green, Syston. LE7 1HQ

www.englishcouture.co.uk

She said that the open days have been a great way to support the work she does in rescuing hedgehogs, but that the time had come to use different ways to fund raise. It would be 25 years in February 2024 since she began.

The day was very well attended and the plant stall shown above was very popular as always. The event raised £2,480 which helps to cover any vets bills, medication, food, bedding etc. that the rescued hedgehogs need. Our picture here shows one of the five adults that were being looked after. This is unusual as there are usually babies as well, so the hope is that the hedgehogs locally are able to look after their young better and not that we are losing even more. Hedgehogs are on the red list of endangered animals in the UK and it would be very sad to loose these intriguing little animals.

Glen Wakeling from Queniborough, Leicester has been crowned the regional winner for the East Midlands in the 2023 national Heating Installer Awards for the fourth time, after overcoming tough competition in the highly talented region.

Glen specialises in heating systems from small domestic boilers to large commercial appliances with his company HeatSpec. In recent years, Glen has also worked increasingly with renewables and offers his customers efficient and cost-effective solutions, whilst providing the highest quality engineering service.

The panel of technical industry judges awarded Glen the top prize for the region after an interesting and exciting judging day in May. He successfully wowed the judges with his professional expertise, problem solving skills and commitment to customer satisfaction. Glen will now go on to the final in the tough competition for the national championship.

Speaking of his win, Glen said: “To win this award for the fourth time just feels incredible. I know how talented this region is and the competition seems to get tougher each year. I feel very lucky to have my work recognised again this year by the panel of judges. And congratulations to the other regional winners, they’re all fantastic installers and really deserve the win.”

ARIES March 21 - April 19

Life becomes much more fun and openhearted and this is not just down to the summer holiday season! For a romantic opportunity is also coming your way and this is exciting indeed. There is excellent communication between the two of you, encouraging you to open up and express your deepest thoughts. Creative projects abound.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

This is a good time to approach any topic or subject that you’d rather avoid, for you can be sure of honest opinions and helpful discussions right now, as an attempt to solve issues. And you won’t hold back from battling it out either – if you have to! Yes, your confidence gets an unexpected boost just when you need it the most. Hurrah.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

A significant job opportunity that holds tremendous power and authority could come into view. So you’ll be weighing this up carefully and yet this is so excruciating being as the excitement and uncertainty conflict strongly in your mind. Best to ‘go with the flow’ somewhat as your creativity and imagination helpfully come to the fore.

CANCER June 21 - July 22

Discussions take place on practical matters that affect your every day living. There’s hard work involved but you’re not too worried about that! It’s all about your life getting sorted out and you’re prepared to do whatever it takes. Just for once others are taking notice of you and helping you out. Even financial matters are improving.

LEO July 23 - August 22

There’s a bit of a power battle going on and yet your natural warmth, wit and charisma should help to save the day and to keep you at a distinct advantage – as always! Still, you’ll find it difficult to avoid requests from authority figures being as they talk such sense. As fun as it all is, you’d do well to ‘let go and relax’ at times.

VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22

Unusually, you go through a rather active phase of being determined to sort problems out! You also start to put yourself first for a change and it’s been a long time coming, especially when it comes to emotional matters and ‘what you want’. You finally see how you can stabilise your position and build on current successes.

LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22

Some social or community position of power is on offer and this would enhance your career! However, do assess the work commitment first being as there’s a considerable amount required. Others do seem to currently have the emotional edge right now and yet there’s an admirer in your social circle. Life is interesting.

SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22

You’re having to wade through a fair amount of practicalities in order to get anywhere at all – and this turns out to be quite demanding! So nothing seems straight-forward and yet others appreciate your stamina and determination. Remember that you can still follow your dreams and no-one can take these away from you.

SAGITTARIUSNov 23 - Dec 21

You find that your popularity starts to increase and your company is much more in demand than usual. For all your hard work is paying off and your patience and positive thinking have served you well. You’ve been focusing on improving your confidence levels and close friends and partners have particularly helped.

CAPRICORNDec 22 - Jan 19

You’ll be glad when you get to hand over some work role and position of power and authority – for it’s been more trouble than it’s worth just lately. You’ll be seeking out some good pals with whom you can have a good talk and gossip! This also includes your special ‘someone’ with whom you’ll be having real honesty.

AQUARIUSJan 20 - Feb 18

Some big changes are about to erupt in your life and yet which will also see you elevated to a much better position. You’re also likely to face old familiar fears such as involved in risk taking and a change in habits. Close loved ones are being particularly supportive! In fact, someone stands up for you and fights your corner.

PISCESFeb 19 - March 20

You’re really busy these days with Saturn having recently moved into your sign; this is the planet of hard work and application. This planet also helps with problem-solving and recognition so that life gets sorted surprisingly easier and others are finally seeing all the talents and abilities that you possess. Your popularity increases.

Launches their On Line Directory of Community Groups

Syston and District Volunteer Centre announce the launch of a comprehensive Directory of groups which offer much-needed services and contribute to the well-being of our local communities. Many of them organised by volunteers, they offer social, cultural, sporting, educational, financial, health and emotional support to those in need, easing problems and enhancing the quality of life for people of all ages.

Centre Trustee, Colin Grimes, says: “Syston and neighbouring communities are exceptionally wellserved by a wide range of organisations and companies offering such support. This on-line Directory (www.syston-vc.org) offers a onestop guide and clearly demonstrates that, whatever the need might be, there is a local solution. Many of these groups operate under the radar with a great deal of work being put in by small but dedicated groups of volunteers. As a result, too many

local residents suffer in silence, experiencing great inconvenience, distress and loneliness simply through ignorance of what support is available locally. With the help of the Volunteer Centre, the Directory is intended to address these deficiencies by signposting those in need to appropriate sources of support.”

Printed copies of the Directory will be available from the Volunteer Centre’s stand at the “Help is at Hand!” pavilion at the Syston Summer Fayre, on Central Park on Saturday 2nd September. The special pavilion will feature a number of the community organisations involved. Others will be exhibiting independently at the event. At the time of writing a small number of stands are available, at a subsidised rate, offering an exceptional, low-cost opportunity to promote services, recruit more members, attract volunteer support and raise funds - all with the minimum of organisational effort. Entry into the Directory is free of charge. Any organisation that would like to be included and/or would like to book a space in the pavilion - should contact Centre Trustee, Colin Grimes (sadvc@btinternet.com) for a simple Registration Form.

I moved back to the area in 2018 having taken Early release from the NHS.

After many years (not saying how many!!) working with the public I found life a bit too quiet for my liking. One trip to the volunteer Centre and I was on the road as a volunteer driver all expenses paid!

Michaela has undertaken portraits, but finds it difficult to find volunteers to sit and have themselves painted. A very enlightening talk and the vote of thanks was given by Jean Brutnall on everyone’s behalf. Jean also won the competition for ‘my painting or sketch’. Flint - How it Started

It was a delightful village based Ladieswear, gift and soft furnishings boutique based in Groby. Set in two quaint stone cottages which we believed to be about 350 years old and had been knocked into one.

The stone that was used to build these chocolate box cottages was flint – hence the name! flint

We opened late in 2006 ready for our first Christmas. But as like a lot of small high streets, shops and Banks closed around us, until there was only a couple of shops left, so I made the very hard decision to re-locate

the shop and we chose Syston, as this is where my mum lives and worked, running the old pet shop opposite the cinema that is now Tesco, then in the village bakery. So, here we are now in the old (as I remember it) Wades furniture shop. The calm décor provides a relaxed atmosphere in which to browse the colour co-ordinated rails of Ladies clothes, shoes, costume jewellery, handbags, cards, small items of furniture and homewares, prints, mirrors, candles and a range of giftware from children’s toys, unusual gifts for that special person or just something that reminds you of a friend.

Syston Woman Climbs Mount Toubkal to Raise Funds for Marie Curie in Memory of Nan

Sophie took on the challenge in memory of her Nan Sheila who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 2012 and who sadly died at home in August 2013 on her husband’s birthday with her family by her side.

Sophie said:

“This climb truly was a life changing experience for me. We woke up super early on the day of the climb, fully equipped with our mountain boots, gloves and head torches ready to start our summit push.

“We left in the dark and slowly began our ascent up to the top. The weather conditions were very tough and gave us a full winter climb experience which was completely different to anything I’ve had the chance to do before.

“The morning she died, they came back and gently removed all the medical equipment she had been wired to, one of the nurses even went into the garden to pick some flowers and placed them in my Nan’s hands, such a thoughtful gesture and one we have never forgotten.

“Marie Curie made an enormous difference to my Nan’s final days; they enabled us to carry out her wish of being at home surrounded by her family. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to cope, and we have never forgotten how amazing they were when we needed them, we will be forever grateful.

Sophie adds:

A Syston woman climbed the highest mountain in North Africa to raise money for the charity which cared for her nan. Sophie Suffolk, 24, braved high winds and freezing temperatures to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal near Marrakesh, Morroco, raising £800 for end of life charity Marie Curie.

She was part of 17-strong group of adventurers who completed the challenge in March.

The challenge included a six-hour trek with deep snow to the base of the mountain (3,200 meters above sea level), an overnight camp, and a four hour ascent to the top of the mountain 4,176 meters above sea level - all while braving temperatures of -15C and windspeeds of 60kph.

“After four hours myself and the team, with the help of our fantastic guides, reached the top and spent some time taking in the amazing views and pictures to capture the achievement, before our descent.

“I decided to take on this personal challenge as I wanted to raise as much money as possible for Marie Curie to thank them for all their help in allowing my Nan to spend her final 10 days at home.

“The nurses came to the house and administered essential medication, they re-positioned her every few hours, tending to her with so much care and kindness. During her last night, the nurses knew she didn’t have long and called in several times to ensure she was not in distress.

“I want to say a BIG thank you to the members at The Warehouse Gym, my friends and family who have all supported me in helping raise over £800 for Marie Curie so that they can continue to care for families in their time of need.”

Abby Lockett, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie in Leicestershire said:

“Thanks to amazing supporters like Sophie, Marie Curie has been there for millions of people affected by terminal illness over the past 75 years. Today our work is more needed than ever. With your continued support we can ensure a future where everyone gets the best possible end of life care.”

Edward Argar MP for Charnwood

Ihope that Syston Town News readers have been enjoying the recent sunny weather, and hope thatthe sunshine will continue into the summer.

Stn readers will have seen the changes following the recent local Council elections, and I wanted to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Syston’s former Charnwood Borough Councillors, Ken Pacey and Tom Barkley who retired at the elections in May, to Simon Bradshaw who was just edged out in the election by one of the newly elected Green Councillors, and to Sue Gerrard who stood elsewhere, for their collective dedicated service to Syston. I also want to take the opportunity to congratulate Syston’s newly elected CBC Councillors, Conservative Sarah Braker, Greens Andy Haynes and David Infield, and the new Wreake Valley Ward Councillors, who cover a small part of the eastern end of the town. I wish them all well in representing what is a fantastic town. At a Borough-level, readers will have seen the change at Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) overall, with a Council that now has no one Party with an overall majority, leading to the Green Councillors voting to put Labour in power in the vote to choose the new political leadership of the Borough.

Following the Town Council elections, I have recently met with the new Chair of Syston Town Council (STC), Councillor Mark Cherry, as part of my catch ups with Parish and Town Council Chairs, to discuss the work and priorities of the new Town Council, and issues where we can work together as Syston’s Town Council and local MP, as I have always done with STC since I was first elected in 2015. On a local issue that I know is causing some concern within Syston, the planning application to CBC for up to 70,600 m2 of commercial unit space on land at Watermead Business Park, between Syston and Thurmaston, I have already made strong representations to CBC raising my concerns and local concerns

The application would see development on what is currently open countryside alongside the canal, near John Merrick Lake, next to Watermead Park. While economic growth and development to support it is important, it is also important that it is undertaken in a way which does not significantly adversely impact nature and our natural environment Watermead Park is hugely important to local people, acting

as a green oasis between the city, Birstall, Thurmaston and Syston, and a haven for nature, wildlife and biodiversity. I have always been clear that we should seekto protect and enhance our local natural environment where we can, and am concerned that this proposed development is in the wrong location and of the wrong scale, next to what is a uniquely precious local site for nature. I hope that CBC, with whom the decision sits, will consider very carefully the many representations setting out concerns about this proposal, at this location. As ever, if you feel that, as Syston’s local MP, I can be of assistance to you, please feel free to write to me at: Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, or email me at:edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk

Town C.C. Finally Get Their Season Underway

Syston Town C.C. 1st XI finally got their season underway in May but they found their return to the Premier Division harder than expected. Syston started with a trip to Oakham and set a reasonable target of 190 with Asad Pathan top scoring with 65. When Syston reduced Oakham to 140-5 the match seemed evenly poised but the home side knocked off the runs without further loss. The next match saw Kegworth the visitors to Potters Lane and Syston recorded their first victory of the season. Syston struggled against some accurate bowling and reached a very modest 109. In reply pace bowler

Abrar Pathan (pictured) was the pick of the bowlers with 4-13 as Kegworth were dismissed for just 84. Syston then lost their next two games from what appeared to be winnings positions.

A visit to Langtons saw the home side bowled out for just 167 and with Syston on 117-4 and Mo Salejee (34) and Asad Pathan (46) going well, victory seemed on the cards but cricket is a cruel game and Syston

fell 15 runs short. Loughborough Town then were bowled out for just 127 with spinners Faizal Jariwala and Mo Pardesi taking three wickets each. Syston’s innings never really got going and despite a hard fought 28 not out by skipper Umar Razzaq, they were dismissed for just 85. The 2nd XI after three successive defeats overcame Market Harborough 1st XI in a brilliant game of cricket. Batting first, Syston reached 179-8 with skipper Henry Whait hitting a superb 71 and Yash Kapdi 40 not out. Babu Singh with 321 made early inroads but wickets were hard to come by until Ketan Dudharejia weighed in with 3-13 to round the innings off for 168. A visit to Bharat Sports followed and Syston struggled to reach 112 with Rameez Ahomed top scoring with 36. Syston gave Bharat a few problems but they won comfortably by five wickets. The Sunday XI have been winning and losing matches in equal measure as they always do. Wreake Nomads were defeated by 9 wickets thanks largely to Asad Pathan who scored his first century of the season and Abrar Pathan with 66 not out. Similarly after Barkby were bowled out for 117, Ayaan Pathan with 39 not out saw Syston home for a comfortable win. Defeats followed against Barrow Town where Syston just failed by 10 runs in a spirited effort to chase down a massive 264-7 and against Evington Lions who bowled the home side out for just 78 and won by 6 wickets.
