Syston Devastated by the Second Flood in Three Months

On the 2nd January 2024 the Barkby brook bust its banks for the second time in three months and caused major devastation to properties close to its boundary.
Some businesses and properties in the centre along Brookside were flooded to the second time in three months, other streets which either haven’t seen flooding since 1992/3 or had never been flooded before were all shocked by the amount of homes affected from Plumtree Way, through College Road, Merton Ave, Trinity Close, University Close, BrookfieldAvenue and Brookfield Street, Melton Road, Brookside, Chapel Street, North Street, West Street right down to parts of the Hobby Horse estate and Meadow Lane.
Some of the causes of this will be the unprecedented rainfall in such a short period of time on top of the large amount of rainfall in the last three

months July to December being the highest rainfall recorded ever.
But also the lack of routine maintenance of the Brook, as there is a lot of vegetation in the Brook that shouldn’t be there according to the Barkby Flood Alleviation plan 2004. The responsibility for keeping the banks and bed of brook falls to the riparian owners, these are as the Environment Agency told one of our readers who contacted them:Maintenance of a watercourse is the responsibility of its riparian owner. The riparian owner is the owner of the land next to the watercourse. They are responsible for maintenance of the watercourse up to half way across and the owner of the opposite bank is responsible for the other half. If the land on both sides of the watercourse has the same owner, they are responsible for its entire width. However, in order to do any maintenance the riparian owner has to get permission from the county council before doing anything.
This was unfortunately denied at the meeting held on the 9th January.
We checked with the Environment Agency and councils are riparian landowners for any land that is adjacent to the Barkby Brook so are responsible for the general maintenance.
The community came together to help each other - through an appeal on the Syston Town News Facebook page we helped connect people affected by

flooding to people who were willing to lend a dehumidifier to help dry their homes. We would like to thank all those people who helped by this small but welcomed gesture.
There is an urgent need to clear vegetation from in the Brook not just along the Brookside but all the way through to were the brook meets the River Wreake which is at the Three Ways Bridge, see our pictured below.

Your editor and some residents walked the brook from the bridge on the Fosseway down Meadow Lane to the boat yard and along the tow path to the locks beyond the weir, where we found the flood/sluice gates that was denied exited at the meeting on the 9th January. In actual fact there are gates at Thurmaston, this one in Syston, Cossington and Sileby. What we couldn’t see was whether or not they are operational. See our picture on page 12, the amount of rubbish and trees etc clogging the wire and sitting above the sluice gates in the canal is disgusting!
There is even a pile of rubbish that was removed

Christmas Fair at the Syston Social Club
This fair was held on the evening of Monday 11th December throughout the club.
There was a wonderful array of local crafters set up and the lovely atmosphere was helped by music provided by the Syston Band who played in the courtyard garden behind the club.

Highcliffe Harmony
Highcliffe Harmonybased in Birstall held a concert in December at Birstall Methodist Church, with guest choir Melody Blue. We were delighted to have raised £300 for Birstall Playgroup for Children with Additional Needs which is also based at Birstall Methodist Church.
The playgroup not only gives children with additional needs the chance to play in a safe and caring environment, but also gives parents the chance for a little time for themselves or for coffee and a chat with other parents.

A New Multipurpose Hub Opens

Your editor had the great pleasure of being invited to the opening of this new Hub based at Unit 3b, Wanlip Lane, Syston. It is owned and run by the Charnwood Nursery & 5 star Group.

It is an impressive building with car park. The down stairs part is dedicated to providing a soft play area, a large room that can be used for private hire, which on the opening day had a great magician/children’s entertainer keeping not just the

children but the adults happy, plus a large inflatable.
There is a cafe area, which serves artisan coffee and hot chocolate as well as lite bites for all ages. A lovely area, to just sit and chat while children play in the soft play area. See our pictures left that show the hub team, plus the softplay and large room.
The Cafe is also conveniently located for walkers using Watermead Country Park using the John Merrick lake entrance, pop in to enjoy an artisan coffee or hot chocolate. The Hub is open: Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm which they hope to extend to seven days a week.
Upstairs, there is an immense space made up of individual to large offices to rent, meeting room, plus training and conference facilities, as shown in our pictures below.

If you are interested in renting one or more of these modern spaces, please contact chloe@cnpg.uk or telephone 0116 269 6162.

IAN DAVISON
Tales from the Plot February

I’m sad to say that my enthusiasm went downhill quite dramatically at the back end of the year, it seemed to start with the closing of Wilkos! It was quite a loss not only to me but to the community, there were many bargains throughout the year and many of the plotholders on the allotments acquired their seeds, seed potatoes and equipment etc.to work their allotment from there.
Everything on my allotment seemed to be going wrong, my brussels all burst open, parsnips went over and started to rot in the ground and the leeks were attacked with Allium leaf miner. I had a large amount of carrot seeds earlier in the year which I planted in the valley between two rows of potatoes, they appeared to grow well, the tops looked fantastic but sadly however they were all decimated by carrot fly.
My enthusiasm plummeted and for the first time since getting my allotment about 16 years ago, I actually thought is it really worth it? I had very little fresh veg to provide for the Christmas day table, something I’d always been quite proud of in the past.Insteadof feeling proud, I felt I'd failed. What felt like the final straw was I could tell my grandson was losing enthusiasm to come and help me on the allotment, I always knew that would happen at some point and I know from previous experience, the worst thing you can do is make someone do something they’re not keen on doing.
Supermarkets then reduced all their fine looking vegetables to 14p (you can’t buy a packet of seed for 14p for heavens sake) just as the email arrived from the council inviting me to pay my allotment rent - I can’t believe the timing of it all.
Feeling quite low I actually considered whether to continue or not but then I remembered something my late father would say to me ‘ if it was easy everyone would be doing it!’ - it always makes me smile when I think of those words.
I realised I needed to pull myself together and what would I do if I didn’t have my allotment? We all know once you retire, the chair in front of the TV can be your worst enemy so I paid the rent and I spent a few hours down on the plot when the weather permitted over Christmas, just generally tidying up andI have to say I’ve quite enjoyed the solitude, being out in the fresh air can be a great tonic. I realised that there’s far more to an allotment than simply growing vegetables,it’s a medicine for the soul. I now feel my passion is returning, I need to remember that I’ve had some great successes, the potato, the beans and salad crops we’re all great, cabbage and cauliflower and of course amazing sweetcorn.
Every year is different, thankfully the shortest day is now well behind us and plans for 2024 as usual are all in my head but will usually change almost daily. I also know full well that fine looking vegetables can be purchased from your local supermarket at a very reasonable price but sadly they will lack taste and goodness compared with what you can grow yourself……nothing beats harvesting and eating it on the same day, it also feels good to give away surplus to friends and neighbours. Right, next job is to get my onion and the leek seeds sown!!!

PS I will miss Wilkos

A final message from his mum Alex.
The photograph above is the last one taken of him six days before he died. He died peacefully from cardiac arrest while on a drive with me on the 26th of August.
Alex said that she knows of rumours going around and wanted to share the facts. His body had fought as long as it could. We were having a lovely chat reflecting on how lucky we were to have each other and such a bond. I looked up at him as I drove around the roundabout by Asda and could see he wasn’t conscious. He had gone. My baby, my soul mate, my best friend. My life will never be the same but I am determined to use
his beloved van to help others and keep his legacy alive and make him proud of me.
Our thoughts are with Alex and her family and we wish her all the best going forward.

First Class Learning builds skills, confidence, and a passion for learning. How do we achieve so much?
Our maths, English and science tuition programmes are designed around the National Curriculum improving your child’s performance in school. We build each programme of study tailored to fit each child’s needs. This is done through our unique Skills Assessments that enable us to understand each child’s strengths and gaps in knowledge. Whatever the student’s needs, we can give them a head start, help them excel, or overcome challenges.
Our tuition programmes are suitable for children aged between 5 and 16, and very often our approach helps students when other forms of tuition have not. Our step-by-step learning breaks down complex subjects making learning easier. Our printed worksheets and handbooks deliver better retention than online learning. Our students learn every day through a personalised study plan. Many parents and school teachers have seen their children completely change their attitude towards learning and make outstanding progress after starting at First Class Learning.

Batchelor

Passed Away Peacefully on Saturday 13th January
Ian Batchelor of the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) sadly passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday 13th January at just 60 years of age.
Ian joined the LFRS in 1989 as an On-Call Firefighter at Syston Station before joining whole-time in December 2004.
He served in the LFRS for over 30 years and his dedication saw him progress to be a nationally recognised leader in Incident Command Training.
Over the years he has done so much for the LFRS and the community that he leaves behind a mark on this community that will never be forgotten.
On Tuesday 16th January, the LFRS lowered their flags to half mast as a mark of respect.
He was such a kind and caring gentleman and always had a way of making people smile or laugh. He was a big part of the community through the LFRS and became such a recognisable name and face in Syston.
He will be greatly missed by the community, the LFRS, his friends and most of all, his family.

Syston Neighbourhood Mental Health Café
Since it’s opening at the end of June 2023, the Syston Neighbourhood Mental Health Café has had a big impact on Syston and the surrounding areas. Many people are attending from Birstall, Mountsorrel, Queniborough and Sileby and over 200 people having been supported already in lots of different ways.
Our coffee connect van attends each week and is very popular, our lovely locals grab a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, a welcome treat in this cold weather, and come inside for a friendly chat.
Our barista has an important role, welcoming attendees with a friendly hello and a smile and sometimes that’s all that’s needed to help someone step inside and start them on the journey of support they need.
Attendees enjoy a warm, comfortable space, a welcoming social area with games and puzzles, free hot drinks and lots of chatter. If needed, face to face 1:2:1 support is available in our quiet, confidential area and over the last few months we have built up a wealth of local knowledge & information on local support available. We guide attendees directly to local support, groups and clubs and help them with signposting to other services if needed. We have lots of information on social groups, educational support, careers advice, along with volunteering opportunities and veterans support

services.
For those who need more intensive support whilst at the café, we have access to an urgent care hub put in place to support the 25 cafes now running across Leicestershire & Rutland. They are able to give an immediate response & provide support to anyone needing urgent care, along with a 24/7 call service and a Central Access Point for anyone wanting to receive mental health support over the telephone whilst at the café.
Mental Health Central Access Point – available 24/7 : 0808 800 3302
Our fabulous volunteer Gillian has been with the café from the start and is a valued member of our team, “I started volunteering with the cafe as soon as it opened. It is lovely to see people who have become regular visitors who come for the company and those who come in crisis and by the time they leave they are feeling more settled. For anyone who keeps coming back, it is great to see their improvement. It is helping people that I really enjoy seeing and I look forward to my Thursdays at the café”.
Long winter months can be hard for many people and our cafe is fast becoming a trusted weekly respite for local people who need a comforting chat, a social space to engage with others and the opportunity to speak to someone directly about their mental health, without the lengthy wait times we see with some local MH services…
If you find yourself or a loved one needing support, come along to the café to see how we can help.
We are open every Thursday 12pm –3pm at the Community Centre on School Street in Syston.
Or we’re contactable on the phone for a friendly chat & more information, call Tracey on 07752 183044.
Friends of Barkby Road Cemetery
Wow, 2024 certainly came in with some force. Poor Syston flooded like never seen before, houses and businesses ruined and our lovely cemetery flooded by the continuous heavy rains. I must say though, the groundsman has done a fantastic job to restore order to our loved one's graves.
We've tried to locate floral tributes the best we can but we're not sure if every one is in its right place.
Dave has now repaired the bird table, that was blown over and damaged in the high winds- thank you Dave.
Let's hope that the rest of the winter is kinder to us all.
Don't forget that the Chapel is now warm and toasty and is available to hire. Rose Bushes can be donated to your loved ones and planted down the ‘runway gravel beds’.
Please contact Catherine Voyce at Syston Town Council on 0116 260 7150, if you require either of those. Take care everybody.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News
Christmas Market and Cafe
We began the seasonal activities by holding a Christmas Market and Café. This was an extension to our event last year.
Adorned with trees decorated by each child from St Peter and St Paul’s

Academy, the market in the church began with a range of Christmas songs and carols sung by the school choir. There was an array of stalls, In the church, including a wide selection of hand-crafted Christmas decorations, pots with Hyacinth bulbs to bring into flower, and of course a large cake stall run by Anne and Joanne Kemp, a Prize Every Time stall run by Janet Burgin and Ann Ward, shown in the picture below and a

Tombola Stall with a selection of prizes, mainly bottles run by Terry Farmer. To entertain children there were various games and Gingerbread biscuits to decorate.
Over in the hall were the refreshments, Bacon Baps till noon, followed by homemade soups and bread and of course tea and coffee, mince pies and cakes to buy.
We were certainly up against it with the
weather which was rather unfriendly but once it eased a bit many people made the effort to come.
It was an enjoyable occasion and resulted with over £1000 being raised.
Posada
During Advent the two Posadas, Joseph and Mary and the donkey, travelled through Syston to arrive back in church in time for the Christingle Service. Many thanks go to the St Peter and St Paul’s Academy, several shops, members of the congregation and their friends for hosting them.
Light a Candle
The church was open on the afternoon of December 16th for anyone wishing to light a candle in memory of a loved one. There was also an opportunity to leave a message on the Memory Tree, kindly donated by Gambles & Son, Funeral Directors in Syston. In the quiet and peaceful atmosphere there was space for memories to be shared and cherished, with the prayer that all would find peace during the Christmas period and beyond.
Christingle
This all age, interactive service was once again held in a packed church. The familiar Christmas story was told and the significance of the decorated orange was explained.
We were very grateful for the donation of 100 oranges from Tesco.
A collection for The Children’s Society was held which raised £304.34
Carol Service
The extra chairs form the Christingle Service were left out which was just as well as once again the church was packed!
The service took a traditional form with the well-known readings and carols and

included two organ pieces, played by Matthew Jones our organist.

Syston Station Suffers More Vandalism

It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that our beautiful station has been targeted again by vandals.
As the pictures show, newly planted trugs have had the sponsors plaques ripped off them and thrown onto the railway tracks along with the new plants put in those trugs.

The Syston Station Adopters are volunteers who give up their time to help make our station a pleasant place to visit and attractive to visitors arriving in Syston via the railway.
This behaviour is totally unacceptable and we hope that the Police and East Midlands Trains Authority who have been informed can track the individual(s) responsible and prosecute them for destroying all the good work done by the Syston Station Adopters.

from the weir and around the sluice gates last year, just dump on the bank! The amount of rubbish/fly tipping that has got into the watercourse is also disgusting and the lack of maintenance just compounds the problem, the water gets backed up because of the obstructions. This is also a probable contribution to why this flood was worse than the one in October.
We have been in touch with Leicestershire County Council as they are our Lead Local Flood Authority and they have told us that the Barkby Brook has been designated a river and to contact the Environment Agency as they are responsible for rivers. We spoke with the Environment Agency and they explained that it is only a designated river from Deville Park to the A46 where it meets the River Wreake, and they are responsible for the flood alleviation but not general maintenance, that remains with the Riparian owners of the land adjacent to the Barkby Brook.
After the last flood in October, a panel was set up but only one meeting has gone ahead and as far as the public is aware nothing has been done, resulting in the town being hit by an even worse flood that the last one.
However, Charnwood Borough Council responded more rapidly after the flood this time and sent out a road cleaners to clear the silt and rubbish left behind on the roads affected, then they collected flood damaged items from households affected too.

In order for flooding in Syston to be avoided in the future, the community and local authorities need to work together.
Some members of the community have suggested organising an action group supported by councils and environment agencies because we are all aware that councils have a limited amount of
people and funds.
If action isn’t done soon with the removal of vegetation from the brook that is blocking and slowing the water down then the town is likely to be flooded again. This was stated in the Flood Alleviation plan 2004, which the environment agency are aware of and agreed that regular general maintenance along the brook should be done by the Riparian owners. It is over ten years since any maintenance has been done along the Barkby Brook. There is a need for all the willows in the Brook to be removed which would need specialist equipment and large diggers to remove the silt in places, particularly, were land has slipped into the brook and near the A46 as one side of the Barkby Brook is completed silted up preventing water being able to flow. However, volunteers could help clear smaller blockages like the fallen branches from overhanging trees and shrubs, removing bull rushes that again are blocking the flow of water.
If Syston Town Council helped by communicating with the Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council departments responsible for the culverts and drains which currently are only cleared twice a year in March and September (a resident said) - this is insufficient as between September and March is when deciduous trees shed their leaves and block drains thus contributing to flooding. There is an early warning system in the Brookside and in October residents were told that it failed and it obviously failed again - has this been followed up as the Environment Agency have told us that they are responsible for this and also the sluice/flood gates located where the River Wreake leaves the Grand Union Canal just past the Three Ways Bridge. We have reported this to the East Midlands Office and asked for a response on the status of the early warning system, at the time of going to print we were still awaiting a reply. Below are some photographs from around Syston some are our own

photographs others have been sent by residents, we thank them for their contributions.

ARIES March 21 - April 19
Your cash matters go well with even more success promised down the line. You fancy spending some on something special. You ask your closest friends for their thoughts and advice as regards a personal matter of some urgency. Just lately, it seems that the goalposts have moved; give yourself time before you take any action.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
You're feeling ‘on top of the world' but will find it difficult to ignore others who seem a little down on their luck. What's the point of celebrating life on your own? So you plan a few social events based at your home environment. Children are fun and playful and need some attention. Is it time for a nice day out for the family?
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
Things are playing on your mind and you know that this is all quite fanciful. Nevertheless, you take certain steps to protect yourself in the face of potential problems. This is sensible. You take time out for a bit of distraction and in an attempt to refresh, ready for some important new projects ahead. Go easy on yourself.
CANCER June 21 - July 22
Folk around you have a good deal to contend with and little time to spend with you! So you bravely just get on with life, doing what you have to. You catch the eye of senior colleagues who can give you a promotion or at least a new work role. Tread carefully and read the small print before you sign any new agreements. This is wise.
LEO July 23 - August 22
Work issues are demanding but you really want to take some time out to do your own thing! Maybe you have enough energy to deal with both? The month turns out to be more interesting than you could ever imagine when the seeds of new ideas are planted for the future. Someone somewhere is thinking of you - someone special!
VIRGO August 23 - Sept 22
You receive news from far afield and this does you a great deal of good! Plans made with family and friends give you something exciting to look forward to. An admirer makes their presence known when they do you a favour. You take some time out from a busy schedule to recharge your batteries and unwind a little.
LIBRA Sept 23 - Oct 22
Your emotions run high this month and yet give you more energy than you've had for a long time. This extra bit of spice lends you a certain air of charisma and so expect to attract a new romantic admirer in a gentle social setting. A new wardrobe sets you up for some special nights out. You are really enjoying life these days.
SCORPIO Oct 23 - Nov 22
There seems to be a good deal of practical considerations for you these days and a lot for you to do. Still, you start to work through things methodically but can't help wondering why everything comes down to you? Something – or someone – from the past comes to mind and opens a can of worms!
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 - Dec 21
You're making and spending cash at a furious rate! Well, you have a lot to do. Others are mightily impressed with what you're achieving. Take care when working hard not to overdo things and give yourself a good break from time to time. Someone is trying to find you, to give you a memento or item of inheritance.
CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19
You're at sixes and sevens and not always sure of what's expected of you and what to do exactly? It's really time to stand back from situations that have proved to drag you down over the last few months – even years. As you stand back to contain any toxic elements in your life, you give a helping hand to others if you can.
AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18
With the Sun in your sign this month, you'll feel pretty lively and enthusiastic. Yes, you have a lot of positives to look forward to in the future so just keep going. You're the life and soul of the party when friends get together to celebrate something. You hear a fascinating rumour and are urged to check it all out!
PISCES Feb 19 - March 20
You've been working hard but others are starting to realise that they've put it all on your shoulders. As things start to settle and re-balance, you finally get a feel of where you're going this year. Friends gather round and you enjoy some unexpected popularity! Others are starting to realise that you're quite a character. Enjoy!

QT Theatre Group
Christmas
Production
The group put on two one act plays for Christmas, Pudding and Panto, both written by a great British playwright David Tristram.

What's for Pudding? is l-r Cathy Rackstraw (Mary), Jules Richards (Jack), Matt Ormerod (Ted) and Gillian Bowler (Maureen) Toby Garner, who played Dennis, is not pictured.
The first one was called ‘What’s for Pudding’,set in the living room of Mary, played by Cathy Rackstraw and Jack played by Jules Richards, the couple face another boring Saturday night! The evening is interrupted by friends Maureen, played by Gill Bowler and Ted, played by Matt Ormerod who called to ask Mary and Jack to go to a dance the next Friday as they had tickets. The drink flows as they consume a bottle of whisky
which leads to anything but a boring Saturday evening and their antics are witnessed by Dennis, played by Toby Garner, who only wanted to order a new pair of brown flared trousers from Mary’s catalogue! The audience thoroughly enjoyed this play and we all had sore ribs by the end of it. It emerges at the end of the play that it was in fact Mary and Jack’s wedding anniversary and she was so fed up that he hadn’t, or so she thought, remembered to buy anything for it! We find out at the very end the truth! He was going to spring a surprise!! But maybe not the one shown in the picture above left!
After an interval with refreshments we all took our places to see ‘Last Panto in Little Grimley’. This revolved around an amateur dramatic society trying to put on a Panto, written by their script writer Gordon, played by Ron Berry, who hopes to get audiences flocking to see it. However, as you can imagine this doesn’t go to plan, what with a dwindling budget, problem lighting and acting ability there are some interesting twists. The audience were in tears of laughter watching all the mishaps as they unfolded. What with slipups, knockouts and patch-ups along side of snide and sarcastic exchanges between Bernard, played by Jules Richards and Margaret, played by Kat Seddon. Plus the hilarity caused by Joyce, played by Jo Gallager who is supposed to be taking minutes but struggles to spell and causes Gordon much frustration! They struggle to get everyone together to rehearse so the final scene ends in complete chaos, with the

lighting failing, actors all over the place until eventually the pantomime horse collides with everyone else on stage and they all end up on the floor!
The picture above right shows the cast in rehearsal.

The QT theatre group of actors and crew are amazing. How Jules Richard remembered lines for two plays running concurrently is amazing and they all made it look seamless, which shows just how much work they all put in to bring these great plays to the audiences. If you haven’t been to see a production, then you are missing out.
Their next production will be in May and I’m sure rehearsals will be underway soon. If you would like to be a part of this small but friendly group you can contact them via: qtsyston@gmail.com
They are always looking for new actors, or crew.

Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP – Member of Parliament for Charnwood
Firstly, may I take the opportunity to wish all readers of the Syston Town News all the very best for 2024, and I hope everyone had a peaceful and happy Christmas period, despite the dreadful flooding we saw in the town early in the new year. And it is that flooding that I write about in this, my first STN article of the new year. As readers will know, the heavy rains on 2nd January saw Barkby Brook in the town burst its banks, causing extensive flooding to people's homes and businesses along the brook's path either side of Melton Road.Following the floods, along with Syston's County Councillor Tom Barkley, I met local residents and businesses to talk about what had happened, and the huge impact it had had on them. Many highlighted that the flood had occurred very swiftly, but, after doing the damage, the waters had also receded very quickly, leaving the devastating aftermath behind in homes, businesses, and mud and sludge on the nearby streets, and wanted to know why the waters had cleared again so quickly. As well as meeting with the team at Syston Town Council who were all in the council offices to respond to residents' concerns, I spoke directly with the
Regional Director of the Environment Agency that evening to discuss the causes of what had happened, and to ask her to investigate why the floods had receded so swiftly after the damage was done, andalso to secure her agreement that one of her senior team would join me in Syston in the coming weeks, to assess what further steps can be taken, with local councils, to reduce the flood risk in the town, and wider Wreake Valley. While the persistent heavy rain, and waterlogged fields meant that the additional heavy rain had nowhere to go, and flooding may have occurred irrespective of other measures, I remain concerned about the amount of silt, including under the Melton Road bridge arches, and the amount of vegetation growing in the brook as a potential factor in meaning the brook cannot flow as freely as it should. I have highlighted the need to clear all these accumulated blockages to help reduce the flood risk, and am pressing for swift action on this.
In the shorter term, along with Cllr Sarah Braker, we secured from Charnwood Council's Chief Executive a commitment to clean the streets affected by mud and debris, and am pleased that this initial clean by the council has already taken place. In addition, Cllr Barkley is taking up the need for road repairs following the flood damage with the county council. Given the brook has now flooded twice in recent months, while we cannot prevent heavy rainfall, I will continue to press for additional measures to reduce the risk and impact of flooding, and will update Stn readers on progress in my next article.
As always, if you feel that I can be of assistance to you with something as Syston's local MP, please do either write to me at Rt. Hon Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, or email me at Edward.argar. mp@parliament.uk

and Daphne, to be flowering. There will be homemade soup and rolls on sale to fend off any winter chill.
On the 3rd March, we have an early spring garden opening in Melton Mowbray, at Tresillian House 67 Dalby Road LE13 0BQ from 11am - 4pm. This garden displays spring bulbs, blossom and spring flowering shrubs such as Camellia and Magnolia.
Visiting one of our lovely winter gardens helps nursing and cancer charities. Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, our volunteers and garden visitors, in 2023 The National Garden Scheme donated over £3.4 million to our best loved charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.
