Last week marked the halfway mark of the year. We have therefor reached the tipping point of 2017 and the rest of the year will be all downhill towards December and what will be for most, a well-deserved holiday. What we don’t know however is what is in store for us all on the journey to December. What will happen with the economy? How will the global economy and what is happening with our southern neighbors’ economy influence us? What we suspect however is that recovery of the global economy will take time, at least 5 years, as we are now nearing the point where some bubbles will burst and a correction will take place. The private sector and we as citizens of our country, however have a huge task ahead of us. The task is to remain positive and create opportunities from within. We are the country. We need to stand united, create opportunities and support one another, share intellectual capital to stimulate our own growth. We will remain to do what we do best to assist the property and related market, and to be a medium which will generate business for our advertisers while we are also sharing useful information with our readers. We will do our part. I am therefor confident that you will enjoy and find value from this edition. add to your compost heap. The heat generated in the compost heap will not be sufficient to destroy certain pathogens and your soil might be infected with unwanted elements when using your home made compost.

JUST THE BASICS

Don't stress – a little knowledge in pruning is not dangerous, most “mistakes” will grow out quickly. It is better to make an effort at pruning than to let them grow rampart.

TO PRUNE OR NOT TO PRUNE? Yes, and here's why:

Ÿ Whether can borers are a problem in your area or not, rather seal with Efekto's Steriseal to prevent any other contamination. Ÿ Sucker growth below the graft must be removed. Ÿ Remove any remaining foliage in order to spray with Efekto's Lime Sulphur. This will take care of any overwintering mites and fungus spores. Ÿ Foliage and all cut branches, twigs, etc., should be removed and disposed of in the refuse bin. Do not

MAINTAIN TLC – it goes a long way: Ÿ After pruning, apply 30gr of Efekto's Insecticide Granules Plus. This will prevent an onset of those nasty little green aphids on the first buds or any other sucking critters. Repeat after two months. Ÿ From beginning August until end of April, apply 60gr of Efekto's 8:1:5 granular fertilizer with Bio-Carbon on a monthly basis, roses are greedy feeders. The high nitrogen factor is essential to encourage strong, healthy cane growth to support flowers, especially with hybrid tea roses. Ÿ In Namibia as well, there is a sharp curve between humidity and temperature. Therefore it's essential to maintain a spraying program to prevent black spot and mildew. This should be done twice monthly at 14 day intervals. Alternate between Efekto's Funginex Tel: 061-234900 and Virikop.

Chicken Dirty Rice This is a delicious one pot wonder with a weird name. Traditionally a good Southern dish, I have adapted it slightly. Give it a try!! Method: Ingredients: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 350g chourizo sausage, diced 1 medium onion, diced 2 medium celery stalks, diced (about 2/3 cup) 1 medium green pepper, seeded and diced 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon salt, plus more as needed 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more as needed 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup water 4 medium spring onion, thinly sliced 8 chicken thighs skin on, seasoned and browned in a little oili rice, to serve

Heat the oil in a over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the sausage and cook until browned, about 6 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the sausage to a plate; set aside. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the onion, celery, and green pepper to the fat in the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the rice, garlic, bay leaf, salt, oregano, thyme, black pepper, and cayenne if using. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the rice makes a crackling sound, about 3 minutes. Add the stock, water, and reserved sausage and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Bring to a boil. Stir the rice and spread into an even layer. Place part cooked chicken on top. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir the rice, cover again, and cook undisturbed until the rice is tender, 5 to 10 minutes more. Remove from the heat and let sit covered 5 minutes for the rice to steam. Fluff the rice with a fork and season with more salt and pepper as needed. Sprinkle with the scallions and serve. Serves 6 to 8
