Tiles have never been this much FUN! New tile trends have hit Namibian shores and they are making waves. While plainer 60x60 stone and cement look-alikes have dominated in many design applications, new formats and designs are giving us a lot more options to bring life into our living spaces. It is truly an exciting year for tiles. VINTAGE DESIGN Vintage design and particular vintage furniture is a worldwide trend and has been with us for a while now. However vintage tiles are new: floral prints, colourful graphics, Mediterranean patterns, geometrics – and all with an antique look. The colours and shapes immediately liven up rooms and give a fresh burst of energy to old rooms. These are great when renovating kitchens or bathrooms. NEW FORMATS Tile shapes and sizes are in constant flux and the newest trend has been towards larger formats and none-rectangular shapes. New triangular and hexagonal shapes are a great way to break up straight lines in a room and are particularly suited for kitchen back-walls and bathrooms. In terms of larger formats, the motto is the larger the better, with new designs coming in at up to 2,60m in length! That is one tile from floor to ceiling. Other interesting formats are 75x75cm, 90x90cm and 60x120cm. WOOD TILES Wood tiles have been around for a few years now; however the new products being made these days are much more sophisticated in terms of quality and design. Because wood is a rare and sensitive resource in Namibia, wooden floors have never been a big factor, although many people love the touch and texture of wood. With these new wooden tiles you get the feel of wood in terms of texture with the robustness and manageability of a hard tile floor. New ceramic “decking” allows you to extend this onto terraces and around pools.

finder Physicians are highly skilled in a field where there is great demand. The earnings of a physician are directly tied to the knowledge he has in his head. He takes his earnings potential with him wherever he goes. Because a doctor’s skills are widely sought after, many countries are eager to welcome him to their shores. So, policies that harass doctors redistribute medical care to countries where they will not be harassed.

With farmers it’s a different matter. A farmer must work with land to prosper. They are tied to the soil, therefor farmers are easily controlled or destroyed by governments. A physician can be a physician anywhere. A farmer has to have land. The physician easily relocates. The farmer doesn’t. The wealthiest places in the world, aren’t farming regions but big cities. If you look at the bustling Kowloon district of Hong Kong, you’ll see prosperity, but very few people who own land. It wouldn’t do them much good if they did. There are 43,033 people per square kilometre there. Give them all an equal share of the land and they wouldn’t own very much. There is really no correlation between land ownership and wealth. Many rich people are land poor and many poor people are land rich.

This also means you aren’t likely to increase the well-being of the poor through the redistribution of land, especially if you remove productive farmers and replace them with less-productive ones. All that will do is reduce food supplies, increase food costs and harm the poor. People in these cities are very wealthy by world standards because they rely on what they know. They are mobile, not tied to the land. If you want to improve the lot of the poor, more knowledge, not more land is the answer. When a government proposes policies to make people reliant on land ownership, they are not increasing the wealth of people. These policies won’t make people more prosperous.

How to finish What you’ve started

Spring gardening tips September is by default the beginning of a the new growing season with its gardening challenges, finishing off with the unapproachable winter that came to slaughter and steel away the glory of our gardens. This is in any means the way I am experiencing the devastation of the winter that within a few days destroying our gardens so one has to start all over again. Naturally this is the way Mother Nature are doing things. Everything is falling into its specific time slot, winter, August winds, Rain, and is playing a crucial part in our planet's ecosystem. Fortunately the cold winter is important to chase away all unwanted garden pests and diseases. I, who am supposed to know which plants will frost, learned that in this country you do not take our winters for granted. Many shrubs that were not supposed to frost, did frost. We must take into consideration that more damage is caused by our dry winters than the moist winters of South Africa. A good gardening tip is to start watering much less way in advance of the winter and to start feeding with a high potassium feeding (3:1:5) as from April already, strengthening your plants and lawn's cell tissues, making them much more resistant against the cold temperatures to come. Damage is done and we need to now get everything back to normal again. Talking about lawns, we are now supposed to do our seasonal kick off with a once-off lawn treatment normally within the first two weeks of September. This practice is normally only for new lawns, with uneven surfaces to be

evened out by filling with a lawn dressing mix. Old sifted cattle manure and Superphosphate would normally be sufficient for this once off lawn treatment. The next five steps is what the lawn treatment entitles during the first two weeks of September: Step 1: Cut lawn short if necessary, raking out all dead grass and remove. Step2: With a garden fork, aerate by digging about 20cm down into the lawn surface, pressing down on the handle of your garden fork, causing the prongs to lift the lawn slightly. Step 3: Spread the fine sifted cattle manure and superphosphate or bone meal evenly. Step 4: Rake the manure and phosphate into the prong holes with a leave rake. Step 5: Water well for the next two weeks. Commercial Lawn Dressing is available, which is basically an organic compost/ manure and river sand mix. The lawn dressing could then be replaced with sifted cattle manure in step 3, by following all the rest of the steps from one to five. Putting a lawn dressing, one should never exceed a layer of eleven to twelve millimeters on the lawn surface. Now your lawn is ready for the new season and follow-up feeding can be done every four to six weeks afterwards with either an organic fertilizer or 7:1:3. Do remember to water well after applying chemical fertilizers to avoid chemical burning of

your lawn. Concerning your flowers, veggies and herb beds, do spoil them with sufficient organic material (Compost & manure) and Superphosphate or bone meal, especially this time of the year, assuring optimal growth and plant health. While the organic material is decomposing in the soil it creates hydrogen ions, having an acidifying effect on your soil, resulting in a friendlier soil pH, enabling plant roots to absorb nutrients more freely. I am prone to use organic fertilizers on the fall of the season, following up every four to six week with a chemical (3:1:5(26)SR) or organic fertilizer (Poultrog) throughout the remaining of the growing season. Do not be over keen on starting to cut back on your shrubs before the last cold we normally expect in middle September. Roses and fruit trees may now be pruned back properly with a good feeding of Compost and fertilizers e.g. S u p e r p h o s p h a t e a n d Po u l t r o g / 3:1:5(26)SR, assuring a good start for optimal plant growth. Be aware of aphids, scale and red spider mite due to the dusty winds we had in August. Our Namibian gardeners do not fear a bit of cold, and we are well adapted to start gardening all over again each new growing season. Do not lose hope, but rather motivate each other and let us see whose gardens recovers first after the frost damage. Good luck and enjoy gardening in this new growing season.

In 1954, Krauer & Gotthard employed a paint chemist from Germany, Mr Hesse, to assist in the manufacturing of paint, but unfortunately ran into financial problems. Mr Claus Meinert (from the well-known printer family) took over and immediately realised that running a paint company requires one's full attention and a strong knowledge of paint chemistry to develop top of the range paints and a sustainable supply chain. Hesse was offered the company in 1958. During the 1950's Namibia was like one united family. Word of a paint factory opening in Windhoek spread like wild fire amongst the inhabitants of the country. Like any new product it first had to proof itself, the usual questions arose. Is the product any good? Will the quality of the paint live up to the standards of South African paints? Government Officials were sceptic – their

loyalty was obviously with what they knew and have trusted for years. NEO Paints obtained SABS certification for their products shortly after – ensuring that the quality was indeed equal to the South African goods and standards. The local fish and meat canners were the first to obtain the SABS mark, followed by NEO Paints and CocaCola. The first paint was made by Hesse's own formulations. Together with his vast knowledge and experience in paint, Hesse formulated the first two batches of Wall Paint and Gloss Paint. Transportation per truck was prohibited outside towns at that stage, so dealers received their stock via railway and contractors picked up their paint at the factory. Contractors were allowed to transport building material outside Windhoek using their own trucks to deliver to sites. The raw materials used

to manufacture paint was received via railway from South Africa with loads up to 1400 bags (35 000 kg), manually offloading one bag at a time. After offloading all the raw materials, employees were covered in white dust from head to toe and as a thank you they received a bottle of “paint off remover”...Brandy for immediate consumption. Today every major hardware retailer in Namibia distributes Neo Paints' products, ensuring our products are available in every town in Namibia. COMBINED RAINWATER & GREYWATER HOUSEHOLD SYSTEM Although water is the most abundant resource on the planet, just 3% is fresh water, and just 1% of that is available for drinking. Unlike electricity, there is no alternative to water. The focus is thus on Ÿ Saving water by using it sparingly; Ÿ Finding alternative water sources (i.e. rain water); or Ÿ Re -using available waste water (i.e. greywater). RAINWATER Rainwater has become an important and very valuable source of water to sustain our very limited water resources, which are currently under great pressure. Rainwater is not only a free source of water, but also of a very good quality, as a result of low levels of air pollution. Harvesting of rainwater, th e s tor age an d r e us e th e r e - of i s straightforward and easy to apply in all households, businesses and even larger scale industries. A rainwater harvesting system comprises components of various stages - transporting rainwater through pipes (i.e. gutters), primary filtration, storage in tanks for reuse, secondary filtration and disinfection (if used indoors), and distribution into the household or garden by means of a pressure pump. Roof structures are the most common catchment area and cheapest form of catchment consisting of existing infrastructure requiring very little additional capital investment, and which also have the least potential sources of pollution. A household having a roof structure of 100m will, during a rainstorm of 10ml, produce 1,000L of water. Considering last year's rainfall figures for Windhoek, this single household would have harvested ±23,600L of rainwater from January to May and ±3,780L from October to end December. At a total volume of 27,380L

per year, a single household of four people using 180L per person per day (excluding gardening), would be able to sustain themselves for 38 days of the year or just more than one month of the year. If flushing of toilets is done by using greywater, the number of days increases to 50.1 per year or almost 2 months. If 30% of Windhoek's households (i.e. 27,000) harvest on average 20,000L of rainwater per year, a saving or relief on our water resources of 540 Million litres per year is achieved. GREYWATER Compared to rainwater, greywater is a byproduct of our daily wastewater, which is by default in 'constant supply'. Wastewater originating from showers, baths, basins and laundry is categorised as 'greywater'. Harvesting of greywater, the storage and reuse there-of, is equally straightforward and easy to apply, as with rainwater. Greywater can be reused for flushing of toilets and gardening, which in both instances will result in a significant water saving. Apart from the direct financial benefit to the user, greywater use also alleviates pressure on potable resources and infrastructure, which brings an indirect benefit through lower municipal rates and taxes. Considering residents' health and safety, as well as groundwater protection, a greywater system requires as a basic, a two-chamber treatment process, primary filtration, aeration and very importantly disinfection. An ineffective greywater system would typically smell, attract flies and mosquitos, and cause soil and underground pollution. On average, a household of four people would dispose about 450L of greywater per day. Almost 30% of a household's water is consumed by flushing of toilets, which represents ± 200L per day or just below

50% of the greywater available, which leaves an additional ± 250l for gardening. If 450l of a household's total daily water demand (i.e. flushing of toilets and gardening) is replaced with grey water, it represents a saving of 13,500l per month or 162,000l per year. If 30% of Windhoek's households (i.e. 27,000) can achieve this yearly saving, a total of 4.4 Billion litres of water saving is achieved. Glorious September, spring is in the air and we are bright-eyed and bushy tailed!

All of us want at least one tree in our gardens. When considering to plant a tree there are a few things to bear in mind in order to avoid disappointment or possible future problems. Ÿ How much space is available? ŸDo you prefer evergreen or deciduous? Ÿ Is the root system aggressive? Ÿ Weather conditions in your area? Ÿ Slow or fast growing? Ÿ ”Messy”? Let's take a look at the above issues: Often people plant a tree for the kids to climb or to build a tree house. Then of course, it should be a tree that will grow to a considerable size with sturdy branches. If there is no space for such a tree, it is out of the question. Lack of space will be an injustice to a larger specie as it will grow misshapen and could cause damage if too close to structures. Evergreen trees are mostly preferred for year round shade and for the misconception that there will be no leaf drop. These trees also drop leaves, like old hair being pushed out of follicles to make place for new growth. A small percentage of evergreen trees are frost tolerant whereas almost all deciduous trees can survive extremely cold conditions. A sunny room in summer can be unpleasantly cold and gloomy in

winter – a deciduous tree would then be the answer. Leaf drop is once off, so sweep, clean up and sit back. Sometimes we fall in love with a certain tree that have a viciously aggressive root system and should not be planted close to structures, pools or where they could damage underground cables or sewage pipes. This could after a few years result in considerable expense. If you live in an area with a high frost factor, make sure about the tree's cold tolerance. The same with warm, dry wind in summer. Some trees can handle it others not. If you move to another area, it would be wise to go through all four seasons before making a choice. You could also ask you neighbours about the weather conditions. Impatient? Then go for a fast grower. Trees like the beautiful Wild Olive, are extremely slow growing. However, even with slow growers, the tempo can increase if the conditions are ideal. Often trees are selected to attract birds and pollinators. However, not an ideal choice where you do not want a bit of a mess like bird droppings and nectar drippings, especially where cars are parked or next to paved driveways. Gardens in complexes have limited

space and one must be careful when selecting a tree. Here are a few excellent options for smaller gardens, all with non-aggressive roots:

Ÿ Apodytes dimidiata – White Pear Ÿ Buddleja saligna – False Olive Ÿ Dombeya rotundifolia – Wild Pear Ÿ Bolusanthus speciosus – Tree Wisteria

Ÿ Ilex mitis – Cape Holly Ÿ Dodonea augustifolia – Sand Olive PLANTING TIPS:

Ÿ Dig a hole of at least 1m deep with a width of 1m x1m.

Ÿ Do not skimp on organic matter.

Mix the soil dug out with ample compost or old kraal manure. Ÿ Fill back to the right planting depth and then mix in your root developer, Efekto's superphosphate or bone meal. Water well to help the root developer spread and to see if the soil level doesn't drop too much. Ÿ Remove from the holder, try not to disturb the roots too much. Lower in the hole and close up with the rest of the soil/compost mixture. Water well. Ÿ Water only once a week to prevent hair roots from rotting. Ÿ Follow up fertilizer 6 weeks after planting: Efekto's 7:1:3 or 3:1:5 in the case of flowering- and fruiting shade trees.

Spring Detox Cauliflower Rice Salad with Chickpeas So winter has finally come to an end and now it's time to get ready for summer. Nothing like a little detox to put the spring back in your step! The base of this salad is made up of raw cauliflower rice, but don't be frightened off, it's crunchy and delicious while also being healthy. Cauli Salad:

1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed chili powder, salt, and pepper 1 head cauliflower, cut into florets 1 apple, sliced thin 4 Spring onions, sliced thin a handful of parsley and mint, chopped 2 firm avocados, cut into chunks

2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard 2 tablespoons honey 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup water juice and zest of one lime (you can use a lemon if you can't find limes)

Ÿ salt and pepper, to taste

1. Chickpeas: Preheat oven to 200� C. Place chickpeas on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with chili powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Roast for 20-30 minutes until crispy and browned. 2. Cauliflower Prep: Working in batches, run the cauliflower florets through a food processor until you get a cous cous consistency 3. Dressing: Shake up all the ingredients in a jar, or whisk together. Taste and adjust. 4. Assembly: Toss everything together. That's it!
