I look back at Housefinder’s achievements and I am struck with amazement. I am humbled about how we went from good to great. With the new sexy look that we introduced in June, right through to our 100th issue celebration in November, it was an amazing journey. The encouragement and praises received from readers and clients on this new look was truly heartwarming. Its worth its value in a 100 bars of gold. This year was the biggest growth we have ever experienced, and we are unbelievably grateful for the talent and opportunity that was given to us to make a difference in the property and publication world.

Writing this editorial, I’m filled with emotions ranging from “freaking” great, proud, humbled and thankful. One of our main initiatives for 2011 was our sexy new vigorous website that was part and parcel of the new direction we took with the magazine. And what an outcome is was! We still have some exciting new features that we will be adding to make the website even more exciting in 2012, but we are satisfied with the public’s feedback and perception.

Everyone is getting into the party mood. The end of the year is near, and the Christmas parties get into gear. Kook en Geniet, Host en prost, happy happy, whatever you do – don’t overdo it!!

Planning your move • You need to decide whether you're going to hire a removal company or if you are going to personally move yourself. You'll need to consider the distance involved, the volume of your home inventory and the costs.

• If you do decide to use a removal company, choose a reputable one.

• Be sure that all your expectations are made clear upfront, establish what these expectations are and what the removal company offers • Discuss the cost of the move. Does it include boxes and packing, and insurance if anything is damaged or misplaced? Insurance cover is normally an optional extra.

Things to do • Cancel the household insurance on your old house and be sure that your new house is covered.

• Hire packing boxes if they are not supplied by the removal company.

• Start packing things you don't often use. It's easier to pack one room at a time.

• This is a good time to clear out items that are no longer used.

Perhaps consider donating them to a charity.

• Arrange for the final reading of your electricity, telephone and other services.

• Arrange to have the electricity, telephone and other services connected at your new home, in advance, so that when you move in, it'll be livable.

• Do not stock up on frozen food, as you must defrost your fridge and freezer for the move.

Moving tips • Mark and list your boxes to show which room they must go to, so they can be taken there

immediately.

• Boxes that contain breakables should be marked "Fragile".

• Draw up a plan of where you would like your furniture placed, so that you don't have to move it yourself later.

• On the day of the move, pack essentials - like a kettle, tea, coffee, cold drink, some snack food, cups, plates, matches, paper-towel, knife, tin-opener, l i g h t b u l b s , t o i l e t p a p e r, screwdriver and candles. Keep these items on you - together with any valuables, cash and the keys to the new house.

• The day before you move, back up your computer. Keep the back-up discs on you, or give them to a friend for safe-keeping. Preferably, leave your hard-drive with a reliable friend.

• If you have irreplaceable items that have sentimental value - like photo albums and heirloom china, leave them with a reliable friend.

• On the day of the move, turn off all electrical appliances and take note of any readings.

Checklist: who to notify • the local electricity and telephone departments companies handling your life insurance and assurance policies • any rental companies with whom you have agreements - eg. TV, MNet, security • your doctor, dentist, optician and other healthcare providers • your employer • friends, family, domestic and gardening staff, your child's school • your bank • the post office - they need your change of address .

Luxury Hill...

One can easily fall back in the normal or rather stereotypical way of writing an architectural review, but as I am lying flat on my back with the laptop @ 22:15 it changes from a laptop to a 'tummytop' and I catch myself deleting this sentence five times and contemplating what I wish to say next.

How does one make a seemingly simple article interesting? How do you summarize 18 months of construction and design into a few short sentences? What would interest or captivate the reader and turn a monotonous piece into an insight on the design and transfer ideas onto paper?

Personally when I pick up a magazine I am primarily interested in the pictures, secondly captured frazes and definitely last the content of a comprehensive write-up.

The pictures provide the reader with personal interpretation and in the end each person would be interested in different details of the building. Each photograph will or rather should invoke praise or criticism.

Isn't this what architecture is all about? It provides a platform to live, dream and give expression to very personal ideas, needs and like-tohave's. Usually when you design a private residence, all detail are on a personal level to cater for

everyone that will live in the new building. The spaces cater for private use and public use (guests or visitors).

There almost always are links between internal spaces and external landscaped areas.

I think the success in any building lies in whether the client or end user is happy, comfortable and excited to come home to !

With this particular house the clients knew exactly what they wanted, a family home that could be enjoyed, with sustainable solar energy and automation – open plan living spaces, optimizing the unbelievable views over Windhoek and at the same time have intimate bedrooms, walking out onto private balconies and en-suite bathrooms for all bedrooms.

Who's to say which style, color and layout should be followed – the secret I think lies in the happiness of the owners … I cannot help to smile as I walk out the front door, finished taking photo's, listening to the families laughter in the lounge and their son running down to the veggie garden pulling out tonight's salad, roots and all! The family dog bid me farewell with a last bark for attention.

A house should not only provide shelter, but definitely be an extension of a family's lifestyle assisting with the venture towards quality of life.

Oxidation destroys roofs Oxidation... it is the mortal enemy of roofs From the moment a new roofing material is installed, regardless of whether it is asphalt, modified bitumen, EPDM, PVC or a variety of other materials... exposure to the sun’s ultra-violet radiation begins the process of destruction.

Rich Man Poor Man’s Fruit Cake

Butter (rich man) / Margarine (poor man) Fruit mix Dates Brown sugar Boiling water

Combine all of the above ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. Allow to cool completely.

Preheat oven to 150° c. Grease a springform baking tin. Double line the bottom and sides separately, using first greased brown paper and then greaseproof paper. Make sure that the paper you cut for the sides is double

Ideale kusplante met gesondheid in die rondheid Die Vlierbessie (Elderberry – Holunder auf Deutsch – botaniese naam: Sambucus Nigra) is ‘n aanwins vir enige tuin en uiters geskik vir ons kustoestande. Hulle is baie windbestand en hulle pragtige blink blare hanteer die soutbelaaide lug van ons kusoorde sonder moeite.

Vanuit Europa het die plant na baie werelddele versprei en is jare terug aan planttelers in Suid-Afrika voorgestel deur die kruie guru, Margeret Roberts – hiervoor verdien sy’n goue sterretjie in haar plakboek!

Vlierbessies word groot struike van ongeveer 4m hoog en maklik 3m breed. Hulle is maklike, dankbare plante wat ‘n volson posisie verkies.

Alhoewel hulle tolerant is wat arm grond aanbetref, gedy hulle natuurlik in goed gekomposteerde grond met ‘n toevoeging van Efekto se beenmeel en organiese Vitaboost korrels. Om kompakte groei aan te moedig in die lente en somer, is dit raadsaam om die struike middel Julie terug te snoei.

Indien verkies, snoei om pragtige heining te vorm as windbrekers om ander plante te beskerm, veral by die kus. Met ‘n bietjie moeite en geduld kan hulle as stokkielekkerplante gevorm word vir fokus in potte of as ronde balle in wye bek potte. Hulle kan redelike lae temperature hanteer wat ‘n pluspunt is vir gebiede met ‘n ryp faktor.

As jy jou eie komposgat wil begin, doen dit naby die vlierbessie, die blare wat afval help om die afvalprodukte vinniger af te breek, selfs takkies wat gesnoei word. Verder het dit uitstekende insekwerende kwaliteite, muskiete hou niks daarvan nie, self nie plantluise nie. Maak ‘n spuitmiddel deur een deel blare of afsnysels by 2 dele water te voeg –bring tot kookpunt, sit deksel op en

Snuffel gerus op die internet vir ‘n resep om ‘n gekonsentreerde stroop van blomme te kook – ‘n verfrissende somerdrankie om gaste mee te verras voor die Kersmaal.
