Om op die voorgrond te bly van ‘n veranderende wereld, byvoorbeeld tegnologie, ekonomie en politiek noodsaak dit ons om ook periodiek strategies aan te pas. Therefore we kick off this year with a fresh approach in terms of look and feel of the magazine. The adjusted slick size will be easier to handle, more cost effective for advertisers, but still the same prestigious and glamorous magazine. Our four Bumper editions will remain the same as previous (perfect bind glossy) with a slight adjustment to keep things interesting. With the economic winter continuing, markets will be under pressure and as a result for us as consumers as well, if we follow the main stream. We will get professional advice during the year with tips on how to stay ahead and accumulate more cash flow, and share this with you. Currently it looks like property prices are stabilizing, which is good for buyers. Comparedww to the international market Namibia as a country still has fast growing property prices. House hunt tips! Here are some easy tips when you house hunt! Before buying a property, check it out! The Interior Ÿ Cupboards: are they painted or stained, solid wood or chip board? Know what you are buying. Ÿ Counters: laminates or solid surface? Laminates tend to stain and chip easily. Solid surface counters are more expensive but more durable. Ÿ Floors: chipped or badly laid tiles will soon irritate you. Replacing badly soiled carpets could runt into the tens of thousands dollars. Ÿ Bathrooms: check for leaks or cracks in the toilet pan, bath, shower and sink. Leaking pipes cause damp and if they're built into the walls, they will be expensive to repair. Ÿ Windows: if you struggle to open a window, the chances are good that it will be difficult to close as well. Windows that do not seal properly will let in drafts. Ÿ Ceilings: watermarks on ceilings indicate a leaking roof

Some Cycas facts Cycas revoluta, also known as the “King Sago Palm Tree”. Apart from being one of the most primitive living seed plants, they are very unusual and popular ornamentals with their rugged trunks topped with whorled feathery leaves which lead to the common name “Sago Palm”. They are actually related to conifer and Ginko trees, all cone bearing plants, tracing their origins back to the dinosaur era, therefore often referred to as “living fossils”. Although various species can be found throughout the world, the subtropical Cycas revoluta – native to the Far East – has been a very popular choice as container and landscape plant for centuries. It is readily available from growers and does not require a CITES certificate like most other species. Care and culture of Cycas revoluta Propagation is by seed or removal of offsets called “pups” Cycads are dioecious, producing separate male and female plants, the male produces a cone and the female a flower. When plants are young it's not possible to tell their gender, as a matter of fact, most Sagos must be at least 10 – 15 years old before they bloom and should be well established in your garden. The chances of blooming in a pot are virtually zero. Plants are pollinated by wind or insects and in cultivation, by hand for viable seed production. Seed development takes place in the female flower during the summer and are ready to be removed in January/February. Seed should be soaked in water for several days, then remove the red skin, but leave the hard white seed coat. They can be planted immediately or left in a cool, dry place until March/April. Before planting in a medium of perlite and coco peat, drop seed in a bucket of water. Seeds that float on top, have been fertilized. Plant them sideways, not upright, with the pointed part to the right.impressions That is how Artist of they land when dropping out of the mother plant. The growing medium should be kept moist New “Future Ready” Development (not soaked) at all times, don't allow it to dry out. Germination can take anything from 3 – 9 months. Offsets or “pups”, growing at the base or along the sides of mature Sagos, are an excellent source of new plants. Remove them in early spring, late autumn or winter, by using a hand trowel to pop off small ones from the trunk side or a flat spade to dig and gently remove large ones from the base of the plant. Remove all leaves and roots and set them aside to dry for a week or two. Plant in well-drained soil or or a sandy mixture with half the ball or trunk below soil level and water thoroughly. Thereafter allow the soil to become nearly dry before watering again. New pups should ideally be started in a shady area or a bright indoor area. Roots will slowly begin to form followed by the first leaves several months later. Only then apply a mild dose of organic fertilizer like Efekto's Seagro or Vitaboost and water when almost, but not completely dry. Plants should be allowed to form a good root system before re-potting into a larger container or planting in your garden or landscape.

General tips that might come in handy SOIL: Should be well drained and rich in organic matter (compost, coco peat). WATERING: If grown in a container, allow the soil to become almost dry before watering thoroughly, slowly adding water around the top of the soil. If the plant is receiving morning or afternoon sun or temperatures are warm, Sagos may need to be watered at least weekly. In low light or cool temperature conditions watering will be less frequently. Plants are generally watered twice, the first time wets the soil, the second watering a few minutes later, soaks the soil. FERTILIZER: Rather too little than too much, usually during spring and later summer. As mentioned above, organic is always better. Old leaves turn yellow: from over watering or too much fertilizer. New leaves turn yellow: from excess fertilizer or poor soil conditions. Once leaves turn yellow or brown, they should be removed from the plant! INSECTS: Are limited to scale (can form a white or gray crust) or occasional attacks of mealy bugs. Sago leaves are smooth and waxy. Therefore a contact insecticide should be used together with a wetting agent. Use Efekto's Cypermethrin and G49 Wetting Agent. Efekto has another wetting agent, Insure. Alternatively, do a soil drench when the plant needs water with a systemic insecticide, Efekto's Plant Protector. REPOTTING is best done in spring or summer. Pool maintenance for ladies January 2017 started with rains all over Namibia and we pray that further good rains will fill our dams. Our water tanks are ready for catching rain water. Lot's of rain water can quickly lead to a murky pool, and you have a pool party this coming Friday for the kids. Many people think that the pool is a guy thing and that only they can get the water balance right. Well guess what? LIC Pool's pool service team balances pools of many a pool owner in Windhoek and this team consist of mainly ladies. Here is some tips to get your pool sparkling in no time. Get yourself a good water test kit available at LIC pool. There are various test kits available on the market. ( My advise is….. Keep it simple) Ÿ Do water testing in the evening. Ÿ Read the instructions on the box and test the PH (indicated in red) If the Ph is to high, for example 7,8 you need to make corrections by adding acid into the pool. Be care full when doing this. Read the safety instructions on the Acid bottle. Pour small amounts of acid into various places of the pool. Make small adjustments. Ad +- 500 ml total

dosage per day and re test within 24 hours. Ÿ Next is the Chlorine level. (read the instructions before testing) Chlorine cannot do it's work (sanitizing the pool) if the Ph level is not correct. Rinse the test cube properly and ad the necessary amount of activator into the test cube filled with pool water (The chlorine test cube is market in yellow) We would like the colour of the water filled test cube to match the 1.0 – 1.5 scale indicated on the test cube. If this is not the case you can start adding Granular Chlorine. (available at LIC pool shop) Very important would be the reading of the safety instructions on the outside of the Chlorine bottle. Start adding small amounts ( ± 2 – 4 cups) and broadcast across the entire pool. If you are unsure of the dosage amount, call Francisco at LIC Pool for assistance. Test within 24 hours and re- add Chlorine if needed. Very Important is to let the pool pump run for at least 12 hours per day during the rainy season. If you do not get results with in 48 hours bring a water sample to LIC Pool for analysis and advice on more dramatic shock procedures. We should be able to get your pool ready for Friday's party. Cherry Soufle Don't read the word “souflé” and get scared. This is a really easy recipe and the results are delicious. INGREDIENTS: Big piece of lemon skin, no pith (That white bit is very bitter) 500ml Milk Pinch of Salt 6 Eggs, separated 75g Flour 250g Sugar 1 teaspoon Vanilla 250g Stoned cherries (Use fresh if available, otherwise the sour black cherries in liquid. Drain them and dry on kitchen towel, then dust lightly with flour)

Awesome served with good old vanilla ice cream

METHOD: Preheat oven to 200°C. Bring the milk, lemon skin, and vanilla to a quick boil, then remove from the heat and allow to cool. Whisk the egg yolks with the salt and sugar until pale and creamy. Whisk the cooled milk mix into the egg. Sieve the flour into egg/milk and mix thoroughly This is the only tricky part: Return this mix to a low heat and stir continuously until mixture thickens. Don't allow it to boil and don't stop stirring or you will end up with scrambled eggs. Take off the heat and leave to cool. Whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold them, together with the cherries into your egg mix Grease a ceramic baking dish and dust with flour. Pour mixture into baking dish and bake For 30-40 minutes. The soufflé will be golden brown and pull away from the sides of the Dish when ready. Enough for 6.
