finder There are many times in one’s life where it seems utterly impossible to feel good and peaceful in the storms that dust up and seem to overwhelm us. On a very personal note, the last 12 months involved a great period of uncertainty & sorrow and it is very scary. And I thought long about what to write this month that is still related to the magazine, but also can inspire our readers while living in uncertain times or facing adversity. None of us are immune from such events happening.

Here are a few points that I have learned and applied recently on how to stay positive and hopeful during the storms of life: • To embrace our situation and believe God is holding us and saying: “I have something extra special for you that you can only experience through having grief or hardships. Trust me Ronel, I have your absolute best in mind. I am gracious and kind, and this experience is something that will ADD to your life, not take away from it. Remember, you are my special child.” • To be excited about learning the range of emotions we experience because of this challenge. Be positive to lead your children through tough times. We know they will feel sad, scared, disappointed, and confused because, as parents, we are feeling these emotions. However, we also know that as time goes on, we can choose to be optimistic and see our new life as something special and unique. To choose to believe there are new adventures ahead for all of us. • To understand how BLESSED we are to live in Namibia. There is always some country or someone else worst off than you. It’s much easier to stay positive during tough times when you realize your circumstances could be significantly more challenging if you lived elsewhere. You can always choose to see the glass half FULL or half EMPTY. • I choose to be GRATEFUL for what we have right now. Understand what we can learn and change, how we can add value, and except/ embrace what cannot be changed. • To PRIORITIZE our life according to our values. To realize how valuable your time on this earth is, to make it count for the right reasons and use it to build relationships. To stay hopeful is to absolutely belief that our life and future is in God’s hand and He knows how the story will end, or rather begin! Choosing to live it forward is how to stay positive during the storms of life!

What to consider when buying a holiday home Despite the reducing investment appetite, the demand for holiday homes continues to remain buoyant amongst property investors. According to the FNB South Africa Holiday Town House Price Index for February 2018, the demand for holiday homes has remained reasonably buoyant since 2013. After losing some growth momentum earlier in 2017, there has been a renewed year-onyear growth acceleration and that is demonstrated through the results of the last two quarters of 2017. Many property investors often consider purchasing a holiday home to either diversify their source of income or to use as an escapism haven. However, unlike other types of investment properties available, there are a number of unique factors that should be considered when investing in a holiday home. Ÿ Maintenance – as any other investment, holiday homes often attract maintenance costs. However, these are to ensure that they establish and maintain a competitive edge, are well kept when vacant (if not in rental market) as well as to meet potential tenant needs and expectations.

Ÿ Rental income – it is important to consider that, with holiday homes, the stream of income is not steady but seasonal. This could be influenced by corporate and private interest, public holidays or big events, amongst others. Therefore, it is essential to plan in advance and determine how to make up for the loss of income, when the property is not occupied. Ÿ Ÿ Location – location can help attract the right caliber of tenants willing to pay a suitable rental. For example, people who go on holiday at the coast, predominantly opt for accommodation that has a good view of the sea, close to amenities and entertainment. Ÿ Leisure – investors who are also planning to use the property for their leisure need to ensure that they communicate with their rental agent well in advance that the home is not available for rental during their stay. Breaking news: which will benefit you Winter time allows us at LIC to rethink our operation and what can be done to add value to the Pool Industry. With the drought fresh in our minds we thought of something we can develop in Namibia for Namibians to help us with saving water: Until some 2 years ago most people and especially the Capetonians never ever thought that a drought can have such severe consequences on us, consumers. The droughts triggered various clever water saving ideas and reality is, management of water by all of us, is here to stay. To operate your swimming pool effectively we need to backwash the pool filter. On average a filter backwash and rinse is done at your swimming pool, once week. In most cases we don't see the huge amount of water being pumped down the drain. A normal pool pump is capable of pumping out 20 000 litres of water per hour!

Not only is it aesthetically pleasing and will look sleek on your patio in various colour options, it's good to sit on but most importantly, SAVES WATER! You can store the pool's backwash water in it until all sediment has settled and you would like to water plants and trees at a later stage. Whenever you like you can drain the backwash water and let it gravity flow to plants or the lawn. The Backwash bankie is an easy “do it yourself” application and is small enough to fit in a townhouse scenario. We actually came up with several more purposes for the bankie, but this is yet a small introduction to our newest innovative product produced in our own workshop. TO PRUNE OR NOT TO PRUNE! PRUNING DECIDUOUS FRUIT TREES Pruning is an important part of maintenance when you're growing deciduous trees, including vines. Stone fruits (peaches, plums, apricots and nectarines), apples, pears and persimmons should all be pruned during their dormant season to keep them healthy and productive. Once trees reach maturity – usually about 3 years after planting – they should be pruned annually to enhance tree growth, reduce fruit thinning and adjust crop load for the following season. Pruning creates strong branches and allows proper sunlight to enter the canopy. So when should you be pruning? Deciduous fruit trees should be pruned during their dormant period, in late winter or early spring. Bear in mind that pruning can reduce cold hardiness – pruning stimulates new growth which is prone to freeze damage – therefore be sure to prune late enough in the winter when there is no likelihood of extreme cold or late frost. Explaining some terms is important when talking about pruning. The vertical stem at the top of the trunk is referred to as the leader. Scaffold branches are the primary tree limbs that will form the canopy. Secondary branches that emerge from scaffold branches are called laterals or lateral branches. Two types of vigorous and undesirable shoot growth are water sprouts and suckers. Water sprouts grow along branches usually at pruning sites, while suckers grow from the tree's trunk or roots. These will always interfere with normal tree growth and should be pruned completely when they appear. There are two types of cuts that you'll be making when you prune, heading cuts and thinning cuts. The

height of trees are controlled by heading cuts which involves cutting back lateral branches and terminal buds. Heading cuts should not be made on branches that are over a year old as this can stimulate the growth of water sprouts and suckers. Older trees can also be disfigured by heading cuts and expose large areas of bare wood to disease and insects when made on older branches. Thinning cuts remove branches from their point of origin. Whereas heading cuts stimulate growth in a single branch, thinning cuts stimulate growth throughout the tree, as well as improving air circulation and improving sun penetration. When making any cuts, it's important to keep in mind the desired structure of your tree, which includes keeping the angles of your branches upswept. Different types of trees are pruned to different shapes. Apple, persimmon and pear trees are trained to a modified central leader system, while peaches, nectarines and plums are trained to an open centre system. Last, but not least, the best pruning experience is reliant on proper tools. Quality plays a role here and will be remembered long after the price was forgotten. Disinfect as needed with rubbing alcohol or a weak bleach solution. *Seal cuts with Efekto's Steriseal *After pruning, remove any remaining foliage and spray with Efekto's Lime Sulphur to take care of any overwintering fungus spores or mites. *Start fertilizing with Efekto's 3:1:5 beginning of August on a 2 monthly basis until end of April. Painting Swimming pools Preparation & Painting Only one company produces Swimming Pool paint in Namibia. Swimming Pool paint is only suited for concrete pools – not for fibre glass pools. New Concrete Pools Ÿ Empty the Pool. Ÿ Make sure pool is clean and properly dry (if in doubt Ÿ get a Paint company consultant to do moisture testing). Ÿ Apply one coat Swimming Pool Paint diluted with 10% appropriate enamel thinner and let dry for 48 hours. Important Note: ONLY USE paint brushes when applying Swimming Pool paint. Do NOT use rollers when applying Swimming Pool paint. Rollers create miniscule bubbles, which leads to peeling of paint. Ÿ Apply a second coat Swimming Pool Paint undiluted by brush only – Let dry for 7 days before filling with water. Please Note: Pools should only be painted when the pool had been properly damp-sealed, to form a barrier between the concrete and the surrounding soil. If not done, the paint will continuously peel off and create endless frustration. Marbelite Pools Ÿ Empty the Pool. Ÿ Make sure surface is in good condition, i.e. no cracks, no holes, no crumbling of marbelite surface. Ÿ Wash with Pool acid, diluted 3 parts of acid with 7 parts of water. Apply by mop. Important Note:

Pool acid is a hazardous substance. Special care needs to be taken when mopping the pool. At least wear safety goggles and rubber gloves and boots when doing so.

Ÿ Let the acid react with the marbelite surface for 10

to 15 minutes after washing, to allow for all impurities to be loosened up. Ÿ Rinse three times with copious amounts of clean potable water (clean tap water). Important Note: Pool acid remains a threat during washing. Still wear safety gear. Ÿ Let dry properly (see new pools above). Ÿ Painting the pool: Follow same steps as with new concrete pools. Previously painted Pools Ÿ Empty the Pool. Ÿ Remove all algae and chlorine / lime residue with wire brush. Ÿ Make sure surface is dry (follow same procedures as with New Concrete Pools) Ÿ Spot-paint bare spots with Swimming Pool Paint diluted with 10% appropriate enamel thinner and let dry for 48 hours. Ÿ Apply one coat undiluted Swimming Pool Paint by brush only – Let dry for 7 days before filling with water. For Cracked Pools To fix cracked pool walls requires specialist intervention, normally from civil engineers. Include your paint supplier to assist with advice on dampsealing and preparation of the pool surface for painting purposes. Please Note: Never paint on a hot surface (above 30˚C) or in cold weather below 10 ˚C. Never paint when rain is expected within 4 hours of application. Beef Bourguignon One of my favourite winter recipes. Served on creamy mash it is a real treat. I especially love the whole baby onions in this recipe, so make the effort to go through the tears of peeling them, it's worth it.

Ingredients: Ÿ 1 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Ÿ 150g bacon, roughly chopped Ÿ 1 1/2 kg beef brisket, trimmed of fat and cut into Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

chunks 1 large carrot thickly sliced 1 large onion, diced 6 cloves garlic, minced (divided) 1 pinch coarse salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons flour 12 small whole baby onions 3 cups red wine -- for a milder sauce, use only 2 cups of wine 2-3 cups beef stock (if using 2 cups of wine, use 3 cups beef stock) 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 beef stock cube, crushed 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, finely chopped 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (divided) 2 bay leaves 2 tablespoons butter 1 punnet fresh small white mushrooms, quartered

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 175°C. 2. Heat the oil in a large heavy based pot. Sauté the bacon over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until crisp and browned. Transfer to a large dish and set aside. 3. Brown beef in batches in the hot oil/bacon fat until browned on all sides. Remove to the dish with the bacon. 4. In the remaining oil/bacon fat, sauté the carrots and diced onions until softened, (about 3 minutes), then add 4 cloves minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Drain excess fat (leave about 1tablespoon in the pan) and return the bacon and beef back into the pot; season with 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper. Sprinkle with flour, toss well and cook for 4-5 minutes to brown. 5. Add the baby onions, wine and enough stock so that the meat is barely covered. Then add the tomato paste, stock cube and herbs. Bring to a simmer on the stove. 6. Cover, transfer to lower part of the oven and simmer for 3 to 4 hours, or until the meat is fall apart tender (adjust the heat so that the liquid simmers very slowly). 7. In the last 5 minutes of cooking time, prepare your mushrooms: Heat the butter in a pan. When the foam subsides, add the remaining 2 cloves garlic and cook until fragrant (about 30 seconds), then add in the mushrooms. Cook for about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Once they are browned, add the mushrooms over the meat. 8. Remove any fat off the sauce (if any) and simmer for a minute or two, skimming off any additional fat which rises to the surface. If the sauce is too thick, add a few tablespoons of stock. If the sauce is too thin, boil it over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until reduced to the right consistency.
