Stretch your electricity budget this winter Many cost conscious consumers who have converted to prepaid electricity to cut their energy bills, are still spending excessively in winter due to increased electricity usage during winter months and increased tariffs. FNB shares six tips on how consumers can lower their electricity bills this winter. 1.

Lighting − always use energy efficient lights and avoid switching on lights in rooms that you aren't using at night.

2.

Gas − consumers that use gas heaters and stoves can reduce their electricity bills substantially in winter. Although converting to gas may require a large investment initially, consumers will save in the long term.

3.

Geyser − the bulk of electricity in most households is consumed by geysers, especially in winter when it is much colder. Installing a geyser timer to manage consumption during peak times can help consumers to save.

4.

Refrigerator − old freezers generally use more electricity than new ones as they work harder to maintain cool temperature. Consider servicing or replacing your old fridge to save on electricity costs.

5.

Appliances on standby mode − appliances that are not completely switched off and remain on standby mode such as the TV, decoder and microwave, collectively consume a lot of electricity at the end of the month.

6.

Pool − cover your pool in winter when you are not using it as pool pumps and filters use a lot of electricity to keep it clean.

Watering your garden in winter time... This remains one of those issues that caused many confusion on whether one should actually still water during winter or not at all. Many gardeners believe the myth of basically no watering during winter time. One must remember that among those trees and shrubs that are deciduous and go in a total winter rest, there are quite an amount of trees and shrubs which is evergreen and even does flower in winter time as well. In order for these plants to be able to still function normally and produce flowers, some even fruit, e.g. citrus, they still need water to act as their transportation medium in their systems, carrying plant nutrient to the different parts of the plant. Certainly one should water less, but do not stop watering completely! As I always mentioned about watering, my rule of thumb still remains, “less watering more frequently is better than to much water less frequently.� By implementing this you should still use your normal watering schedule, but just decrease the watering duration. This means that 10min. watering changes to only 6 of 4 minutes watering duration per time. Make sure to do the same with your pots that you water by hand, to make sure to water less, or rather water with the watering can instead.

Why is it important to water less in winter? For the very simple reason, that one get shorter days, soil temperatures decrease, water evaporation is less, transpiration rates of plants decreases, resulting in less water consumption by mostly all plants. The other very important reason for us to water less, is to have a lower plant sell moist pressure, lessen the chances of frost damage if in frost areas. Scientifically, the less water present in the plant cells, the least the damage from frost. This is due to the fact that the cell walls burst when water expands within the cells when it frosts, and with less water the chances are the least for this to happen. Another important factor concerning winter watering is that you do not water that early in the morning like in summer season. Later watering, e.g. your summer schedule will allow your timer to start watering at 05:00am, and will have to reset for winter schedule to not start watering before 07:00 to 07:30am in the morning. This is especially important if you are in a frost area. By watering later in the morning, you have the ice or frost defrosted. Watering early, will increase your chances of frost damage due to the fact that the water might form more ice on the plants. You might even find that your schedule should also be adjusted to less watering times other than only less watering

dura tion. When your system is scheduled to water every day, you might reset to every other day, or even every third day, but then your watering durations should not be too short. So winter is actually a time to save water, but not under water. There are many winter flowering annuals, shrubs and trees, which can still brighten up your garden, instead of your garden becoming a dreary area.

Pool Maintenance I am sure most of you can relate to a more financial challenging times in Namibia the past year. Pool / Pond maintenance is an important thing to ensure you get the most out of the product and service you paid for. In this article I would like to point your attention to a few items around the pool which can save you money in the long run. Ÿ Never, ever switch the pool pump completely “Off” during the winter period. Pool water contains acid amongst others, chemicals. If the pump is in the “off” position for a long period in time the water (or moist) inside the pump attacks the mechanical seal and rusting starts taking place on the shaft. In most cases, after switching the pump “On” after this “winter rest” we find that damage has occurred to the mechanical seal and pump bearings. This can be replaced, but, it costs money. Ÿ To save money on a high electricity bill in winter we would suggest rather running the pump for shorter time periods. Ÿ Do the 24 hour water level test: Cover the pool, make a clear mark at the water level and check it exactly 24hours later. If the water level dropped, we have another item nibbling away on your budget ….. the water bill. Ÿ Finding a leak and repairing it, can sometimes be very frustrating, especially if you want to swim. Have your leaking pool repaired in winter. Don't wait for summer.. Pool companies in general are overloaded with requests to repair pool leaks in summer and this can lead to mistakes. Ÿ Take the pool cleaner out the pool during winter and store in a shaded place.

Ÿ Pool chemicals attack the non moving plastic parts

and wears them down. This can result in pool cleaner repair come summer. Ÿ Invest in a proper pump room for the pump and filter. The Namibian sun blazes down on plastic parts of the filter and pipework. This inevitably leads to these parts perishing and later on a expensive repair. I can go on for hours regarding little things which help ensure your pool costs you little money. RE-USING HOUSEHOLD WASTEWATERS (GREY WATER) Although Windhoek and Namibia at large have had some rains, it is evident that the water crisis is still prevalent, which is expected to worsen due to climate change and continues demand growth. Everyone has become aware of having to save water, which is not only achieved by reducing consumption, but by re-using treated wastewater (black- & grey water) to substitute those uses not requiring expensive and scares potable water, such as flushing of toilets, gardening, growing of crops, cooling of industrial process, etc. What is grey water? The water already utilised in our home is called grey or black water; black water refers to water from toilets, while grey water is all other household wastewater that can be successfully re-used – although care has to be exercised with dishwater, as it contains fats that build up in the soil and affect its ability to absorb water. Is grey water safe for plans? Yes. Everything from lawn to vegetables will benefit from grey water as it even contains plant nutrients. You can spray grey water on the foliage as well as the roots but – as you would normally – you should carefully wash your vegetables before using them. Does waste water contain harmful bacteria? Bacteria – good and bad – can be found literally everywhere, even in your grey water, but these can easily be destroyed before use by installing an ultraviolet light in your system. The sooner you use the water, the less the bacteria are able to breed in it. REMEMBER: Grey water is never suitable for drinking. Is the soap in the water harmful to plants? Surprisingly, good quality soap is good for your garden! Only soaps and soap

powders with a high phosphate level should be avoided because while plants need phosphates to grow, too much is bad in the long run. Most new ranges of soap powder and biodegradable soaps will not harm your garden, but avoid introducing bleach and harmful detergents into your greywater tank. How to prevent grey water from smelling Stored in a tank, grey water is anaerobic – or short of oxygen – so it will develop a noxious smell. To prevent this, it can be used immediately or you can introduce oxygen into the water with an air pump (as in the case of the Maskam Grey water system). Why re-use grey water Ÿ Use less of our valuable potable or fresh water and save thousands of litres of drinking water. Ÿ Reduce the impact on natural water resources by reducing water consumption. Ÿ Save money on water bills. Ÿ Ensure a constant water supply for the garden. Ÿ Possibly add nutrients from the grey water that are beneficial to plants and soil. Ÿ Have the satisfaction of taking responsibility for efficient use of a valuable, finite resource. Ÿ Reduce the flow to the sewerage system, thereby reducing water treatment costs. Vegan Cream of Broccoli Soup I know you are all saying “how can it be vegan if it has cream in it??”, but it just tastes like cream has been added. This recipe is probably tastier than my regular broccoli soup, so give it a try even if you are not vegan yourself.

INGREDIENTS

Ÿ ¾ cup raw cashews, soaked Ÿ 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil Ÿ 2 medium onions, diced Ÿ 2 stalks celery, chopped Ÿ 3 carrots, chopped Ÿ 3 cloves garlic, minced Ÿ 7 cups broccoli Ÿ 6 cups water Ÿ 1½ tsp salt (or to taste) Ÿ freshly ground pepper

Place cashews in a small bowl. Cover with water. Soak for at least 30 minutes, or overnight. If you are in a hurry, boil water in a tea kettle, pour the boiling water over the cashews, and let them soak for 15 minutes. Add oil to a large pot and place on a medium high heat. Once hot, add onion and a pinch of salt and sauté for about three minutes. Add celery and carrots and sauté for another five minutes. Add garlic and broccoli and sauté for another five minutes. Add 5 cups water, salt, and pepper. Stir and bring mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes. Drain cashews. Place cashews and 1 cup water in a blender. Blend until very smooth an creamy. There should be no clumps. Set the cashew cream aside. Puree soup using a large blender or a blender stick. You'll likely have to do this in batches. Once soup is pureed, stir in cashew cream. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Quite a pest, this creepy crawly! Talking about tent caterpillars – a very active pest from year to year, usually ready to start their damage by end of June. They have ferocious appetites and will eat any plant they find. Their nests are unsightly, their eating will injure plants and they readily migrate into most any structure making a mess along the way. Biology Tent caterpillars are 4 – 6cm long, generally dark – mostly black – with a few long, bright coloured stripes which run down their back. They will hatch from eggs in early spring, but though barely noticeable during this young stage, will become active as local plant life starts to grow its spring foliage. If the host plant on which they originated provides inadequate food, they will migrate to other nearby local plants. For the next two months, the larvae will feed during the day, growing bigger and bigger. At night they return to their host tree and start to spin a constantly growing “tent” in order to accommodate their ever increasing size. This tent will become more noticeable as spring turns to summer. These unsightly white, silky looking tents usually appear where limbs of the host tree grow in two separate directions. Feeding larvae, reaching maturity by the end of June will instinctively want to leave their nests. Tents will be vacated and caterpillars will be seen migrating in all directions with no specific destination. Their main purpose will be to find a place to hide and pupate. During their migration, they will commonly crawl on homes. They will be seen on the sides of houses and some will end up inside if proper treatments are not done to keep them out. Once a comfortable location is found where they feel safe and protected, they will spin a cocoon and undergo metamorphosis. In another 2 – 4 weeks they emerge as adults, find a mate and reproduce. Once females (adult moths) find a suitable plant they will leave 200 – 300 eggs on a branch held together with a sticky substance which is part of the egg laying process. Before we know it, the cycle

starts all over again! Tent Caterpillar plant damage These critters can do a lot of damage when they feed. Though their feeding only defoliates host plants and rarely causes immediate problems, plants which lose a lot of leaves will suffer later in the growing season. Apart from looking sad with no foliage, they will be unable to perform normal photosynthesis and will have to spend a lot of time and energy growing new leaves to replace those which were lost. This will also make them more vulnerable to other problems like disease and parasites. Furthermore, caterpillar droppings will be found underneath host plants and will make a mess on cars, homes, lawn furniture, etc. As they eat a lot, they defecate a lot and this can obviously become an issue if a large local population is feeding. Control Ÿ Scrape off and discard overwintering egg masses and tear the protective tents out by hand before the larvae start to feed. Ÿ Most contact and stomach insecticides rapidly control this pest. Efekto's Malasol and Cypermethrin (no secondary poisoning) can be used. Ÿ Sprinkle Efekto's Antdust against trunks and on the soil around the host plant. Ÿ If the caterpillars are crawling up walls, Efekto's Fendona will also be effective – no smell, no stains when dry.
