Today she has mastered the skill of transforming many houses, businesses, hotels and the statehouse by using her uplifting personality, fresh ideas and interesting and professional styles. She started with a shop in Maerua Mall in 1995, specialized in curtaining, quilts and bed linen. She expanded after 3 years with an upholstery department. She thought her dream was realized when she opened her beautiful new showroom in 2008 with 17 employees, but little did she new that there were more room to grow! In 2013 Touch of Style opened a branch in Walvisbay to deliver the same service and expertise to the coastal customers. Her real dream was born when she realized her space is becoming too small and bought the property next to her showroom and build a whole new state of the art building with the help of Pieter Mostert Argitect. Over two decades Touch of Style grew into a giant, and this is only a story of inspiration when you listen to Annette Conradie and her walk through time of determination. finder As we are on the threshold of winter, we start this season by honouring Motherhood. And this is always a special time to spoil mom’s, whether you are a past, present or soon to be Mom.

Mom’s are constantly busy, messy, hectic, and often focused on meeting the needs of others. It is mostly our Mom’s that will pick up the Housefinder to explore and maybe try a new recipe for her family. Mothers are the centre of the household and holding all the pieces together. She smiles to the world, and cry in her bedroom. And only a mother will truly understand another mother. And when mothers grow older, this is when you need to show more appreciation, more empathy, more patience…. As they know they are slowing down, and feel like becoming a burden, but then just remember that she was the one that gave you life and meaning. I love my mom. She is a special part of our family and therefor she is beautiful, an inspiration and a total blessing to the universe.... As all mothers are! The more closely you work with one agent, the better your needs become known and the more effectively they can help you - saving you time and short-circuiting any problems. Because the seller typically hires the agent, the agent is legally obliged to represent the seller's interests. This means you must decide what offers to make and what counter-offers to accept. Don't accept an offer if you have reservations. What are the benefits of using an estate agent? Ÿ The agent can help you to set up a plan of action by analysing your needs and finances, the current housing market and homes available in your price range. Ÿ

The agent will personally guide your search to find neighbourhoods and homes that fit your requirements.

The agent can advise you during every step of the process of making an offer on a home and presenting it to the seller.

What is the role of the estate agent? The estate agent is the link between the buyer and the seller. They will negotiate an agreement of sale that is acceptable to both parties. Ÿ An offer to purchase is drafted by the estate agent. This must be signed by the agent, the buyer and the seller. Once signed, it becomes a legally binding contract of sale. Ÿ A copy of this document must be attached to the loan application form. Ÿ For this service, the estate agent charges a fee or commission paid by the seller. Ÿ

Estate agents in Namibia are required by law to be registered with the Namibian Estate Agency Affairs Board. The primary function of the Board is to protect the public interest (consumers) in their dealings with agents while maintaining and promoting the integrity of estate agents.

WHEN CHILDREN ARE BORN OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE In 2006 the position of children born outside of marriage changed when the Children's Status Act was introduced. As a result of this Act children born outside of marriage are now treated equally to children born inside marriage. In terms of the Act a marriage means a marriage in terms of any law of Namibia and includes marriages recognised in terms of any tradition, custom or religion of Namibia. Marriages in terms of any other country which is recognised as a marriage by the laws of Namibia, is also included. The aims of the Act are to promote and protect the best interest of any child under the age of majority. All children are now protected against discrimination or disadvantage because his or her parents are or were not married at the time of his or her birth. A child born outside of wedlock now has the same rights as a child born while his or her parents were married. The Act creates certain presumptions that have to be disproved by a man if he does not agree therewith. A man is presumed to be the father of a child if he was married to the mother of that child

at any period from the conception to the birth of the child. He is also presumed to be the father if he lived with the mother at the time of conception, but never married the mother. In cases where the man was not married to the mother, nor was he living with her at the time of conception, but it could be proved that he had sexual intercourse with the mother at the time that the child could have been conceived, is also presumed to be the father of the child. In all of these circumstances, the man now has to prove that he is not the father of the child. If any party refuses to submit himself or herself or even the child in question, to scientific testing when paternity is questioned during legal proceeding, then it is presumed (until the contrary is proved) that such party's refusal is aimed at concealing the truth. The High Court of Namibia is the upper guardian of all children and has the power to order that a child be submitted to scientific testing if it is the opinion of the Court that this procedure is in the best interest of the child. Both parents of a child born outside of marriage have equal rights to become the custodian of that child. The parents

must agree on one of them to being the primary custodian of the child. If the parents cannot agree to this, they can approach the Court to decide who the primary custodian should be. The noncustodian parent has the right of reasonable access to the child, unless the Court orders otherwise. This access cannot unreasonably denied or restricted. The circumstances of the particular case will determine whether the access is reasonable or not. A man who has raped a woman and the conception of a child resulted, has no right to custody, guardianship or access, unless the Court orders otherwise. He also cannot inherit from such child in the event that the child died without a will (intestate). The bottom line now is that all children, whether born inside or outside of marriage, are now treated equally in the eyes of the law. This is a very enlightening change that the Legislature made to the common law as should be the case in a democratic society.

Sustainable Water Management Systems: In a period of time where water becomes a scares commodity we need to safe on water and put systems in place for the future to ensure that Swimming pool, water features and ponds are using a lot less water than the conventional system offer. LIC Pool was involved, almost 3 years ago, to develop a brand new Water Splash Park for iFun Family Entertainment Park (as a part of the Go-Karts and Laser tag game on the SKW erf). The task was set to create a family park that runs ecological and biological. LIC Pool did a lot of research & development in consultancy with the Windhoek Municipality and overseas suppliers. The result is the SWMS, Sustainable water management system. How does it work? Ÿ We do not use clean tap water to operate our splash playground. Ÿ We use “semi-puried” water, cleaned by a so called “polishing and purication plant”, our water usage is the equivalent of 2 households per month = entertaining up to 2,000 kids per month. Ÿ Semi puried water is a by-product of the treatment plants of the CoW and Namwater", it is pumped into its own dedicated supply system, it is also used by Nurseries, Sport Clubs and construction companies. Ÿ The plant will clean the semi-puried water to fresh water standard. Ÿ It does not mean it is drinking water, as we treat our water for hygiene purposes. Ÿ The splash playground is a 100% recycling system, the water is stored in

underground tanks to avoid evaporation. Additionally we clean the used water with UV-lights and cartridge lters. We check the quality of our water frequently to ensure the safety of our clients. We are also busy developing an ecological system to clean the semi puried water, called a "wetland". This would make the polishing plant redundant in time. Again this is a rst in Namibia. To enable the people of Namibia to enjoy responsible water entertainment iFUN spend N$ 800 000 just to implement this system. Together with iFUN we will promote responsible water consumption to all our clients in the years to come!

Alas, mostly unwanted! Weeds, a never ending nightmare for most gardeners. What are weeds actually? By most of us they are simply considered as: Ÿ plants out of place and not intentionally sown, Ÿ plants growing where they are (definitely!) not wanted, Ÿ plants that are competitive, persistent, pernicious and interfere negatively with human activity. No matter which way we swing the argument, man considers weeds to be plants whose undesirable qualities outweigh their good points. In nature no plant is considered a “weed”, it is our human activities that create problems. Although the manipulation process may control certain weeds, other more serious weeds will thrive because favourable conditions for them have also been met. Unlike other plants, weeds are naturally strong competitors and the ones that can best compete always tend to dominate. The difference between plant breeding programs of nature and humans is that man breeds plants for yield, while nature breeds plants for survival. Characteristics of weeds Certain characteristics are associated with and allow the survival of weeds: Ÿ abundant seed production; Ÿ rapid population establishment; Ÿ seed dormancy; Ÿ long-term survival of buried seed; Ÿ adaptation for spread and Ÿ ability to occupy sites disturbed by human activities. Although weeds are troublesome in many ways, they primarily reduce crop yield by competing for water, light, soil nutrients and space. Problems in the agricultural sector associated with weeds: Ÿ reduced crop quality by contaminating the commodity; Ÿ interference with harvest Ÿ serve as hosts for crop rotation sequences and cultural practices as well as Ÿ producing (in some cases) chemical substances which are toxic to crop plants, suppressing growth (allelopathy).

From negative to positive – Benefits of weeds Weeds protect soil As weeds are fast growing, they can quickly cover bare ground to protect it. Soil is held together by their roots, keeping it from eroding away in the wind or rain. Weeds fertilize soil Many weeds accumulate vital nutrients from the subsoil, bringing these nutrients into their leaves and as these leaves die back, they make a healing medicine (fertilizer) for damaged topsoil. Weeds condition soil Decaying roots - especially deep taproots – add organic matter to the soil, providing channels for rain and air to penetrate and create tunnels for worms and other beneficial soil microbes. Many nutrients in the soil are lost to the elements when the soil is left bare, either by being baked out by the sun or washed out by the rain. Weeds attract beneficial insects Weeds are generally quick to sprout, but relatively short-lived. Therefore they flower frequently in order to set seed for the next generation. The combination of flowers and their dense foliage can attract beneficial insects looking for habitat or nectar. N.B.: Although many weeds are beneficial to have in your garden, it will be unwise to simply let them get out of hand. A beautiful garden is all about maintaining a balance between protecting and nourishing the soil and managing the growth of all the plants you are caring for. A garden still has to be weeded selectively, after the weeds have had a chance to break up and fertilize the soil. Two beneficial weeds commonly found in our gardens : Portulaca oleracea (Pigweed/purslane) – excellent, attractive groundcover, especially now that we have a water shortage. It will cover bare patches until we can plant again. Edible too (if you like bush food). Khaki bos (Stinking Roger) - part of the Tagetes (Marigold) family and an insect repellent par excellence. No need to let

them take over, leave a few to protect the rest of your garden. Make a natural insecticide (don't store, use immediately) by blending a bunch of leaves with a litre of water. Herbicides: Should be applied on green, healthy weeds as the active ingredient works through the foliage, causing cell splitting which interferes with photosynthesis and further growth. Soil application is of no use. Ÿ

Non-selective – will not only kill weeds, but all plants. Be careful when, for instance when applying on paving that there is no run off to areas where there are plants with low growing foliage. Product: Efekto's Roundup.

Selective – will only target the weeds you want to get rid of on lawns or other areas. Product: Efekto's Basagran, Banweed, Hormoban.

Take note – no herbicide (weed killer) can be used on Daisy- or Wonder lawn as both are also broad leaf species and will unfortunately die together with unwanted weeds. Invasive trees and shrubs : Efekto's Garlon-4. Mixed with diesel (carrier of the active ingredient) and applied to freshly cut wounds or poured into holes drilled at an angle. TIP: Get rid of weeds before they set seed. Gutters are an ideal place for weed seeds to accumulate. Clean gutters after the August winds have settled to prevent them being washed down with the first rains.
