Die “Voorspoed Toewens vir 2015” is klaar verby. Die skole het begin en almal is terug in roetine. Januarie is verby en ons pak Februarie maand met groot liefde aan. Februarie is vir my ‘n maand na aan my hart. Valentyns dag en my troudag is 6 dae uitmekaar, so die hele maand is vir my omvat in liefde. If mankind would be filled with more love for each other, then the world would be a better place, for sure. I wish that people can be and do, all of the above, not only for the month of February, but throughout the year. The love fever starts early for us in the office, as we start to design and compile the magazine with a theme of love. And do not forget to order your special “Message in a Box” from Kaapse Tafel on page 41, for your Valentine. We wish all our readers and clients the best 2015, and a passionate month of LOVE.

Happily ever after Has your marriage reached the stage where your husband is unpredictable, moody and boorish and over time you have lost all love and respect for him? Probably you have lost the desire to see to his 'physical needs'. He feels rejected, unloved and unhappy. These are the ingredients of a disaster. Sooner or later this perceived thickskinned husband is bound to meet a woman who strokes his ego and laughs at his jokes-and everybody knows what this does to a lonely man. The two of you are heading for divorce unless you take matters in hand and stop the viciousness. That means that you have to look at your own behaviour. If there is one undeniable truth about marital nastiness, it is that it takes two to brew. It doesn't matter who started it. What matters now is that one of you have to break the cycle. You will have to take this to a third party, since, the two of you surely are no longer capable of constructive logical conversation about what troubles both of you. He's vulgar. You are frigid. He's disloyal. You are dismissive.

mind and to hold conversations to a constructive path. Through the facilitation process of mediation, your husband cannot shout you down when you complain his rudeness alienates you and you cannot cold shoulder his loneliness. The aim is to facilitate a situation where you should hear each other better and again learn how to be generous instead of defensive. However it remains reality that it is difficult to fall in love again when you have lost interest. The only way to get it right is to start with your own heart. Do not just go through the motions. Getting the other one to agree to mediation might also be a tricky exercise. One will need to be

vulnerable . If con ve rsati on is impossible try writing a letter-not a selfjustifying letter about your spouse's faults, but a letter that says you are losing love and declaring a state of emergency on your marriage, asking your spouse to join you in saving your marriage. If this does not work have a first mediation session on your own. Mediators knows all about such state of affairs and can guide and advise you as well as officially invite the reluctant spouse to at least give it a try. When you are far down the road do not waste time if you are convinced that constructive conversation cannot save your marriage.

This is normal. Just as hurt animals will bite at the loving hand so do hurt people. If both are hurt and alienated mediation is the option before taking the final decision about divorce. Marriage mediation is not the same as marriage counselling. Marriage counselling aims at developing an understanding of one another as individuals and as a couple. Mediation focusses on specific areas of conflict and facilitate ways to resolves them. Mediators are trained to listen to conversations with a clear and open

intelligence of the Heart...

Loving real leather Leather furniture symbolizes style, sophistication and the finer things in life. It embodies our proud African heritage and our passion for living. Its distinctive aroma evokes images of nature, our warm African sun and our wild animals roaming the veld. Its quality, luxurious look and refined feel has made leather furniture a desirable option in Namibia and across the world. “For years it has seated the family on cold evenings around the fireplace and welcomed friends on sunny Saturday afternoons when the Springboks took on the All Blacks. So, do justice to your leather furniture by taking proper care of it and it will continue to bring joy to family and friends for years to come,” says Hazel Oosthuizen from Homeconomix. Apart from leather's luxurious connotation it is often chosen for its robustness and low maintenance, but even the toughest of upholstery needs a little care. Most genuine leathers require similar cleaning, but to ensure you do what is best for your couch, you need an understanding of the different types of leather and its terminology. Despite the origin of a hide, which could be bovine, ostrich or game, leather falls into three main categories based on the way it has been processed: pigmented or protected, semi-aniline and full-aniline. The process determines the look, feel, quality and caring required, more so than the source. Corrected grain leather or pigmented leather, such as Alpine's standard range bovine leathers, is the easiest to maintain, due to a stain-resistant sealer coat. Pigments are added to the sealer, resulting in an even colour and texture. The disadvantages are that it feels colder and harder and doesn't offer the natural look that aniline leathers do. Semi-aniline leather such as Alpine's Kudu, Cumulus and Impala ranges (all bovine), looks more natural than corrected grain leather, disguising only some of the natural colour variations and markings. A combination of pigment and dye with a thin topcoat is used, so it feels softer, whilst still having stain-resistant qualities. Full aniline leather, such as Alpine's Kalahari and Rustica, (all bovine), means that only pure dye is used with no surface pigmentation. The beauty of this process is that it doesn't camouflage any blemishes or scratches, leaving your leather furniture

to share its origin and history and continues to change over time due to its light sensitivity. Leather aficionados become lyrical in its presence and find its aged look and sensuous touch irresistible. Buffed aniline, such as the Semi nu-buck range, which includes African Buffalo, Woodland and Gemsbok Buff (bovine or genuine gemsbok), feels suede-like, but has a more rugged appearance, complementing African and colonial interior styles. It absorbs oil, so it is inclined to go darker and shinier where it makes body contact, adding character to the piece with age. Genuine gemsbok aniline is exceptionally strong and soft and has a unique look. Its large hair follicles, evident on the skin surface, allows the course hair breathing passage to ventilate the animal in the extreme heat conditions. The leather is mostly used for furniture with small panels as these hides are smaller than regular bovine hides. The hides are sourced from controlled culling programs in Namibia. Pull-up aniline leather, such as Alpine's Pull-up, Crazy Horse and Rustica ranges (only bovine is used for this technique) has been treated with additional wax or oil to re-create a distressed, old world look. The technique emphasizes markings. This leather may fade with time, giving it a unique look. Leather Uppers, refer to Alpine's economy leather suites, where a combination of genuine and synthetic leathers are used. Genuine leather is used on all areas that come into contact with the body. Other

areas, such as the base, outer backs and outer arms are upholstered with matching imitation leather. Care and clean instructions “One should never use detergents or shoe polish on your leather furniture,” warns Hazel. “Wipe or dust it often with a soft dry cloth. To ensure suppleness and prevent cracks, it is important to clean and protect your leather annually with a good hide product.” Hazel recommends L E AT H E R G U A R D C L E A N E R A N D PROTECTION, a kit available from Homeconomix. For tougher dirt, wash corrected grain, semi-aniline and synthetic leathers with soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, wringing out the cloth or sponge before use. Spills on full aniline leather, including buffed Semi nu-buck, indigenous Gemsbok and the Pull-up ranges should immediately be dabbed with a soft dry absorbent cloth, since these natural leathers are not stain-resistant. All leathers, particularly full aniline leathers, should not be exposed to direct sunlight as this will cause fading. A well made leather sofa is durable and can last for generations. Just like good red wine….genuine leather has the reputation of getting better with age. Homeconomix has the expertise to give you the advice about buying the right leather furniture to suit your budget and needs. Visit the Homeconomix showroom at 13 Voigts St., Southern Industries, Windhoek.

garden

focus

You don’t have to be .... just another brick in the wall when it comes to gardening. It is totally unnecessary for first time gardeners to despair after a few initial failures. Practice makes perfect and as time goes by your skills will eventually be perfectly honed. Like people, plants have individual personalities and the fact that we paid for them does not mean that they must live up to our expectations if we don’t treat them with respect. By being attentive to their needs and wants, we can learn so much from them that gardening can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Watch them, listen to them, talk to them! When moving into a brand new property one has the opportunity to plan a garden without the stress of renovating an existing or “inherited” garden. Soil preparation is of prime importance. Never skimp on organic matter – use ample compost and manure, combined with coco peat. As a result of symbiosis taking place in the soil, it becomes organic poor, very often becoming hard and clay like.

Drainage is poor, hair roots get damaged, water and nutrients are not effectively transported through the arterial system. Soil that was originally sandy will revert to that state. Replenishment of organic material should therefore take place at least twice to three times per year. BUYING PLANTS will depend on what type of garden you want – low maintenance, theme, formal or informal.

fences, etc.), resulting in wrong plant choices. Take time to watch the areas during different times of the day, not forgetting how it could differ with seasonal changes. Low budget, little space available? Create focal points with pots, small garden paths leading to an ornament, bench or small water feature. Create texture with pebbles of various sizes and colours.

Factors like frost, sun, shade and wind (salt laden at our coastal gardens) should be taken into consideration. Make sure you understand the information on plant labels. Should basic details like growth habit, position and hardiness lack, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. If you wanted taller growing plants as a background it would indeed be an unpleasant surprise if they are now dwarfed by a choice that you thought would be lower in the front.Often gardeners don’t make sure how shade “moves” during the day (walls, high

*Dig a hole twice the size of the plant bag or container.

TIP: Do not try and loosen roots that seem very tight, rather soak the root ball in water until they appear relaxed. As soon as new growth appears (approximately 2 – 3 weeks later), apply a suitable Efekto follow-up fertilizer. DON’T neglect your maintenance programme (even low maintenance is still maintenance): regular fertilization, spraying (roses), light/heavy pruning, cleaning and deadheading. INVEST in proper garden tools, this should include gloves, safety goggles and masks. ALWAYS try and include insect repellent plants in your garden, usually very good companions. BERRY-GO-ROUND! For the first time available in Ferreira’s Garden Centre (and Namibia): Cranberry and Goji berry

*Water the hole to allow air pockets to escape.

CORRECT PLANTING PROCEDURE:

*In the case of smaller ornamentals and shrubs the bed size will be 10 20cm wider on each side of the container. *Shade- and fruit trees should have a bed of at least 2mx2m. *Mix soil dug out with equal parts of compost or old kraal manure, combined with coco peat if available. *Fill the hole back halfway and then mix in Efekto’s bonemeal or superphosphate for good root growth.

*As soon as the water is settled, cut plant bag to remove, lower plant in centre and fill hole up with rest of compost/soil mixture.

Vietnamese Stir-fried

Lemongrass Beef with Noodles

We have just got back from holidaying in Vietnam, so I thought I'd give you a taste of what we have been enjoying for the last 2 weeks.

· 500g Beef fillet (shaved thinly) · 3 Lemongrass stems, white part only, chopped · 3 Large cloves garlic, chopped · 3 Tablespoons fish sauce, use the lighter coloured, slightly sweet one

· ⅓ Teaspoon freshly ground black pepper · 600g Rice noodles · Oil, for frying · 1 Cucumber, seeded & thinly sliced · 90g Bean sprouts · ½ Small iceberg lettuce, sliced · 1 Teaspoon rice wine vinegar · 1 Tablespoon fish sauce, extra · 1 Handful mint leaves · 90g Toasted peanuts

Combine beef, lemongrass, fish sauce & pepper and set aside for 20 minutes for flavours to develop. Soak the rice noodle for 4-5 minutes in boiling water and then drain and rinse under cold water. Heat a large wok/pan and add a little oil. Stir-fry beef on a high heat for 2 minutes until fragrant. Add cucumber, bean sprouts and lettuce and toss to combine. Add the rice vinegar, extra fish sauce, herbs & half the peanuts. Toss to combine. Place the noodles on a place and spoon the beef mix over them. Sprinkle with the remaining peanuts.
