Textiles and their uses There is something about a piece of beautiful fabric held in your hand or draped casually over a piece of furniture that excites the imagination. There is something about the possibilities in an expanse of beautiful colours and patterns, the fall of the folds, the feeling of the fabric in your hand, that makes you sense that a magical transformation of the appearance of a room is about to take effect. Beware! The enchantment wrought by alluring fabrics can lead to choices that transform a room in unexpected ways. NATURAL FIBRE – The classic choice Despite the impressive characteristics of synthetic fibres, natural-fibre fabrics still hold a special fascination. Natural fabrics are prized for the extensive range of colours with which they can be dyed, as they are highly absorbent. As with so many things of fine quality, natural-fibre fabrics can be expensive, as they are produced in partnership with nature, and cannot be massproduced as rapidly as synthetics. Types of natural fibre include: Silk – the royal fabric It takes 36 000 silk caterpillars 60 days and one ton of mulberry leaves to produce 5,5 kilograms of raw silk – keep this in mind if you ever question the high value placed on silk. This fabric sets a tone of formality and elegance in a room. Take care to use it only where it will be subject to the minimum amount of wear from sitting, rubbing or

live with. It soils and wrinkles easy, but it is easily cleaned and ironed. Because cotton absorbs and releases moisture readily, it has always been considered an ideal summer fabric. It is far less expensive than silk or wool, and it is virtually non-allergenic. Linen – a classic Linen with its strong cellulose fibres are very difficult to dye and appear to fade in a very short time. The actual fabric will far outlive its pretty print. THE GREAT PRETENDERS The versatility and lower prices of synthetics make them very popular, even in the most expensive interiors. Synthetics are often mixed with natural fibres to derive the best qualities from both. It includes cellulose fibres like rayon, acetates and triacetates produced from cellulose, a fibrous plant substance. Other synthetic fibres are: pulling. Wool – the fabric of elegance Wool is considered a fabric of quality. It resists spots and stains if given immediate care. Its greatest advantage is that it is one of the strongest, longest-wearing fabrics; its strength is exceeded only by that of linen. Unless constructed in a very tight weave, woollen fabrics are not usually appropriate for semi-formal or formal schemes. Cotton – the popular favourite Cotton is extremely popular because it's so easy to use and to

Defamation in terms of Namibian law In the USA law suits are one of the fastest means of becoming a millionaire. They literally sue for anything. In our law it's not that easy. People watch television and then think that the law on television (which is mostly American Law) applies the same here. This is not the case. Namibia follow a different law which mainly originate from the Roman Dutch Law. If you, in your dealings speak to people, you must always choose your words wisely, because the wrong statements made, could let you end up in big trouble. You can think what you want but not always say what you want. So what is Defamation really about? Defamation is a public communication for instance in a newspaper that tends to injure (damage) the reputation of another person. It includes libel (written defamatory statements) and slander (verbal defamatory statements). Communications which merely unflattering, annoying, irksome or slightly embarrassing are not defamation. The compensation paid to the person suffering the

defamation is for the insult, indignity and suffering caused by this wrong and unlawful communication or act. In law we refer to dignitas, which means that you are injured in your dignity as a human being. The Bill of Rights initially created a great deal of uncertainty in the field of defamation, since it protects conflicting rights, namely that of dignity and privacy, on the one hand and freedom of expression (Including freedom of the press and other media) and political rights, on the other. The courts must assess the extent of the damage a person suffered when dealing with a matter of loss of reputation. In doing so the Court will take a wide variety of factors into consideration. Some of these considerations include the nature of the defamatory words, falseness, malice, rank or social status, absence or the nature of an apology, the manner of the publication (communication) and the general conduct of the person that uttered the communication (words).

In every defamation action the Plaintiff must prove that the defamatory words were published of and concerning him. So too, in a case of so called class or group libel, the Plaintiff can only succeed if it is in fact a publication thereof and concerning him personally. It is not only a person's good name and reputation that can be harmed. Likewise a person's dignity can also be impaired and he can then sue for damages to compensate him for the indignity suffered or publish on apology. The person who intent to defame, must have the knowledge of the wrongfulness of the statement or publication. All in all it's always better to keep any negative opinion you have about somebody else to yourself. That way you never run the risk of being sued. The best thing about it is that you focus on positive things rather than negative. You know what they say: “You get what you focus on”

RE/MAX opens new office in Namibia Due to the vast increase in demand and opportunity to expand, RE/MAX of Southern Africa has recently broadened its horizons and opened a new office in the Namibian capital of Windhoek. The new office, which is called RE/MAX Properties Unlimited, will be headed up and co- owned by Wessel Louw and Kyra Stipp as Broker/Owners. The office will mainly service the Windhoek suburbs, but will also branch out into north, south, east and central Namibia. While the global economic slowdown did have its influence on the housing market in Namibia, demand for housing has continued to grow, particularly on development plots, with the most soughtafter residential locations found mainly in the suburbs that spread out over the hills around Windhoek. This is the first time in the last two years that RE/MAX will have an office in Windhoek, and given the vast growth in demand for property, it is likely to be a huge success. “Visitors who have not been in Windhoek in the last year or two will definitely notice the differences,” says Stipp. “There is a lot more hustle and bustle. Development has been astounding, with more people flocking here almost daily. The infrastructure has been improved and more roads have been built to accommodate the increase in traffic, along with more buildings and housing to provide for the growing demand.” Stipp notes that while most of these elements are good economic indicators, they have affected many of the citizens of Windhoek both positively and negatively. “With this growth, we are currently in a situation where supply does not meet the actual demand, which has led to property in Windhoek being relatively expensive.

Perhaps the biggest effect of under-supply is the ever-increasing threshold for entry into the market. Young middle-class couples and first-time buyers are struggling to afford a townhouse. Bottom line – prices are high,” says Stipp. An entry-level home, such as a twobedroom apartment or small threebedroom home in need of renovation and with no special features, can cost between N$800 000 and N$1,5 million, depending on its location. Mid-level homes in an average area, with features such as a swimming pool, large garden and security system, can cost anything from N$1,2 million to N$2,2 million. The most expensive homes, which will typically be outside Windhoek on new estate developments, are priced from N$5 million to N$12 million and will have all the luxury features one would expect. The truth about pool heating With autumn and winter around the corner we would like to discuss the choices you have in heating your pool to extend the swimming season. To make the right choice for pool heating we are looking at variety of aspects such as the size of the pool, average water temperature needed, height of the pool above sea level, use of a solar blanket or not, type of pool (rimflow, shape, gunite, fibre glass, indoors). There are mainly 2 options for heating

your pool: Solar panels There are different types of solar panels. Mounting solar panels looks easy, but installed incorrectly will mess up the flow rate of the pump resulting in the pool cleaner not working, bubbles in the pool to name but a few problems. Solar panels are mounted on the roof of the house and will heat the pool to +- the ambient temperature of the day. The water of the pool is pumped up to the roof through the solar panels which heat the water and exits into the pool. For example: When the outside temperature is 20 degrees, the water which exists the solar panels (correctly sized for the pool) will be at +- the same temperature. Bear in mind that the distance between the solar panels and the pool will have a big influence. Per one meter piping the water temperature goes down with 0,8° C. This sounds all very good, but during the night when it is cold the solar panels will have the reverse effect and cool the pool water down. It is thus very important to manage the period when the pool pump is switched on. In this article we can not gave you all the tips but one important one is: In the hot summer days when temperatures easily runs over 38 degrees it is very important

not to turn the solar panel pump on through the peak heat period of the day. In summery: The use of Solar panels will lengthen your swimming period through the year, but will not be effective during +- middle April – August. At the coast with lots of mist and strong winds the use of solar panels is not advised, as it will normally not be very effective. The startup cost in fitting solar panels are lower than the cost of a heat pump, but unfortunately they need more maintenance. Heat pumps Enjoy an extended swimming season, with a pool heat pump. A pool heat pump, offers increased comfort throughout the year. Now you can easily and cost-effectively control and personalise the temperature of your swimming pool water. So every day can be a swimming day. Pool heating pumps are not only durable, as Titanium Polyamide is used to manufacture the condenser, they are also quiet, thanks to the use of cutting-edge technology. Conclusion: A heat pump can be fitted on every Pool without a roof nearby, can be set on a temperature not to exceed and is low maintenance where the Solar panels are lower in price but needs more attention and can not be fitted in any situation. One very important aspect to keep in mind is: Although a Heat Pump works very well most heat pumps go into a defrost mode below 10°C. Thus if your heat pump is not working during certain times in July, check the thermometer… It is most likely below 10°C . My advise is, if this happens….. go and get a warm cup of coffee! Moroccan Honey & Mint Syrup Cake I have a brother, the amazing Gorgeous Gregg, who owns a catering company in Johannesburg. Every now and then he spreads some brotherly love and shares one of his winning recipes with me. Just last month, he used this one on a function, and had such success with it that he mailed it to me immediately. You see, the truth of the matter is that neither of us are really strong on the baking side, so when we find a keeper, we share! 160g butter, softened 310g sugar 1 ½ teaspoons chopped fresh mint 6 eggs 230g desiccated coconut 210g self-raising flour For the mint syrup: 200ml water 180g sugar 1 ½ C chopped fresh mint 75g butter 180g honey 180g sliced almonds

Preheat the oven to 150ºC. Beat the butter, sugar and mint until they begin to change colour. Add small quantities of the egg, coconut and flour, beating well between each addition to prevent the mixture from curdling. Repeat until you have used these ingredients up. Line a lightly greased spring-release cake-tin with baking paper. Pour the batter inches Bake for 111/2 hours (you can make the mint syrup during this time). Check the cake is baked by inserting a skewer in the centre. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin for 5-10 minutes. For the mint syrup: Place all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 30- 45 minutes. Strain through a sieve and discard

the mint leaves. Use the syrup as directed. To assemble: Preheat the oven to 170ºC. With the cake still in the tin, prick 6070 holes in the top. Pour the mint syrup evenly over the cake, allowing it to soak inches. Place the butter, honey and almonds in a saucepan and melt them together, stirring until all are well combined. Do not allow to boil. Remove from the heat and immediately spread this topping on the cake. Place the cake back in the oven and bake the topping to a light amber colour (about 15 minutes). Remove and allow to cool in the tin for 20-30 minutes. Take the cake out of the tin carefully and while it is still warm, gently remove the baking paper. Dust the cake with icing sugar before serving.

Each day men gather in their 100s at sites all over Windhoek, waiting expectantly for contractors, homeowners, farmers, or simply someone who cares to offer them a day's casual labour. These are the men on the side of the road. Launched in 2007, MSR is an NGO that works with these men to enable them to gain marketable skills through training and mentoring and to start them on the path to employment. MSR is a non-profit organization that facilitates change in Namibia by connecting the unemployed with job and training opportunities. MSR has a comprehensive database listing each member's contact details and skills, so that you as a customer can contact MSR who will connect you with the right person for the job. There is no charge for this facilitation service, and you negotiate the wage directly with the work seeker. MSR has sent people to help with moving house, car guarding, gardening, delivering magazines,

event set up and take down and a variety of other jobs. Members with skills such as painters, tilers, bricklayers, truck drivers, mechanic assistants and roof repairs can also be contacted through MSR. MSR is able to introduce "ready to work," semi-skilled and unskilled members to customers to fulfil their short or long-term employment needs. Customers are introduced to our members at a safe and convenient place of their choice, or we can facilitate interviews, where they will offer their services by
