One thing that struck me the most when putting this issue together is the increase in retirement developments and villages. Demand for retirement communities is on the rise and in Namibia we do not stand back from the rest of the world when it comes to the luxury and design of these developments. There’s no single strategy that works for everybody—these days, retirement can mean very different things for different people. However, to invest in one of these houses to be prepared for your golden years should probably be a priority looking at how they are popping up. We are adding another regular article in the magazine named “Building Matters”, and you can look forward to that as from the August issue. The garden lovers will find that it is now the time to prune your roses and fruit trees, turn to page 55 and get started. You can still enjoy your garden even if there is limited watering involved. 5 Tips for revamping your finances Most of us start the New Year with, at least, hopes for a better year, some with a list of resolutions, and a smart few with a practical, step-by-step plan for ensuring a better year. Draw up a monthly budget, or revise your budget, to factor in the impact of the interest rate hike. These hopes, resolutions and plans inevitably include financial goals, such as paying off debt, saving more or saving up for a dream. Here are some tips for revising your financial resolutions for 2014: 1. Draw up a budget Draw up a monthly budget, or revise your budget, to factor in the impact of the interest rate hike. Ruthlessly cull unnecessary expenses to ensure that you can afford the necessities, such as bond repayments, vehicle finance instalments and debt repayments. PRUNING OF ROSES and Fruit Trees Rose Rejuvenation There are two reasons why roses need to be pruned – to encourage better blooms and to keep the bush young and vigorous. Old wood must be removed every three to four years to make way for younger, stronger growing branches. The removing of spindly growth will ensure that bushes bear bigger and better flowers. When should we prune? For roses as well as fruit trees – Most regions in Namibia – before mid July. Where night frost is still very prevalent, delay until early August. In frost free coastal areas pruning should be done in early July. *SEVERE PRUNING enforces rejuvenation, produces roses of a uniform height and stimulates the production of long stems. In well-prepared, well-aerated beds and with correct aftercare, bush roses, especially hybrid teas, will happily and quickly re-grow after a heavy handed cutting back. However, rigorous pruning is seldom necessary for floribundas, creepers and miniature roses. *LIGHT PRUNING allows the rose bush to develop a wider, deeper root system that helps withstand variances in watering frequencies and quantities, soil temperatures and, to a degree, balances out any over- or under feeding. Thicker wood that forms on the basal stems insulates the sap from heat which helps to prevent sunburn and stem canker. More wood is retained by light pruning, containing more starches and sugar which activate more eyes to sprout. While the upper shoots are developing into long stems the lower shoots quickly turn green and through photosynthesis send plant sugars to the roots, activating root development and spread. Ready, Steady, Go! 1. Start by removing all the leaves and dead flower heads. 2. Next remove all the dead, diseased and damaged stems. Cut them away at their lowest or base point. 3. Remove spindly and weak growth that is unlikely to be able to support buds or clusters of blooms. 4. With all bush and shrub roses, cut away all stems that cross the centre of the plant.

Aim for a vase shaped bush that ends up with four or five strong stems around an open centre, avoid leaving stems that cross in the centre. 5. Decide which four or five stems you wish to retain and cut these back to the height you prefer. 6. A straight cut (as opposed to the previous theory of a cut at an angle) exposes the least amount of stem to the air and is unlikely to collect water (and therefore fungal diseases) as no stem is ever completely 90 degrees to the ground. 7. Seal all cuts with Efekto's Steriseal. 8. Remove all foliage and spray with Efekto's Lime Sulphur to get rid of all overwintering mites and fungus spores. After Care Ÿ Directly after pruning, work in Efekto's Aphicide Granules Plus to protect your first buds from rose aphid attack. Ÿ Monthly application of Efekto's 8:1:5 fertilizer, starting August until April. Ÿ Spray healthy foliage fortnightly with a fungicide to prevent black spot. Ÿ Mulch beds to preserve moisture and keep roots cool. FRUIT TREES should be pruned annually if you don't want to end up with scraggly, overgrown bushes – no Eve will pick an apple from such a tree! There is a simple 3-step process that works for the vast majority of fruit trees. Step 1: Clean Up Start by pruning away the 3 D's – wood that is dead, damaged or diseased. Sprouts coming from the base of the trunk? These are known as “suckers” and must be removed as they originate from the rootstock rather than the fruiting variety grafted on top. Erect, perfectly vertical branches that grow from some of the main branches are “water sprouts” and should be removed as well. With all these clean-up cuts it's important to prune the branches back flush to the larger limb they're growing from – don't leave little stubs. Seal all cuts with Efekto's Steriseal to prevent insect damage and fungal diseases. Step 2: Thin out Thinning allows light and air into the canopy, boosting fruit production and reducing problems with pests and diseases.

First, remove any branches that grow downward, toward the centre of the tree or that cross paths with another branch. Once these are out of the way, stand back and take a look. The goal is to have evenly spaced branches splaying out in a pleasing, asymmetrical pattern from the centre. If you see multiple branches competing with each other, thin out all but one branch, retaining the one with the healthiest appearance and best crotch angle (roughly the 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock angle from the centre of the tree). Wider angles can break when laden with fruit and narrower angles lead to bushy growth and fruit that is too high to pick. Continue to thin the tree until there is a good 15 – 20cm of air space around each branch. The smaller the branches are, the closer they can be to each other. Thinning cuts should also be made flush to the branch and sealed. Step 3: The hair cut Heading back the tree means cutting off 20 – 30 percent of last year's growth. Unlike to previous steps, these cuts will be made part way into each branch. Prune each branch back to a point 1cm above a bud that faces the direction you want that branch to grow in the coming year. If there is another branch close by on the left, prune back to a bud on the right side of the branch. Deciduous fruit trees, including grape vines, should also be sprayed with Efekto's Lime Sulphur. Fertilize fruit trees every 3 months with Efekto's 3:1:5 fertilizer and always replenish organic matter on a regular basis. GENERAL PRUNING TIPS: l Sharp shears make for easy, clean cuts. Disinfect the blades of pruning shears as a measure of disease prevention by dipping them in a weak solution of household bleach. l Don't ruin a good pair of shears on thick branches, rather use a long handled lopper. l Wear a good, strong pair of gloves to protect your hands. l Clean up and dispose of pruned wood from around trees and rose bushes, especially if it contains any diseased material.
