Oos Wes Tuis Bes. Daardie gesegte is nie sonder rede nie. Dit is verseker waar. Na 3 weke se reis in die buiteland het jou eie huis, jou eie land, jou eie stad maar net eenvoudig meer van ‘n aantrekkingskrag as enige ander plek op aarde. Een van die redes hoekom hierdie tydskrif so na aan my hart le is juis omdat dit help om vir mense ‘n “Tuiste te vind”; ‘n droom van ‘n veilige hawe vir ‘n gesin… en alles wat daarmee saamgaan…. – die kombuis en die wasbak – In dieselfde asem moet ek noem dat daar die mooiste stede en landskappe in elke land is. Ons het inderdaad ‘n besonderse wêreld, maak nie saak waar jy bly of gebore is. New Zealand probably feel they have the best country ever at this time, but only because they have the best rugby team in the world. Now that the World Cup has come to an end and some of the exciting moments in action are starting to become less of a conversation topic, I cannot help to think of why the All Blacks is the best in the world. Besides the fact that they train hard, have the best players, coaches and so forth, Humility is core of the All Blacks culture. A few years ago a new management team under Graham Henry began to rebuild the world’s most successful sporting team from the inside out. They wanted a fresh culture that placed emphasis on individual character and personal leadership. Their mantra? ‘Better People Make Better All Blacks’. The result? An incredible win-rate of just over 86pc, and a Rugby World Cup. Better people make better All Blacks – but also they make better doctors and lawyers, bankers and businessmen, fathers, brothers and friends. Here’s some examples what sets them apart: What do McCaw do post- match? He “Swept the shed”. Literally. He and one or two senior players swept and tidied the team locker room. Every game in the All Black team – win or lose. Without humility, they lose all sight of “what they do not know”, and “knowing what I do not know” is the ultimate foundation of all wisdom and understanding. At least, the Greek philosopher Socrates believed so: (But those without humility would simply not understand… ) Your character can be really hard to define. Some would describe it as the bedrock of your personality, that which defines who you really are, who you are when no one’s looking. It links to my definition of integrity: Who you are when you’re with people, is who you are by yourself, there’s no need for dual personalities because you’re secure in your own character. I’m not talking about the character seen on the field, but more of the character displayed off it. The All Blacks shown great character and humility during this World Cup. The invitation to the Namibian team into the All Blacks’ changing sheds, having beers and chatting away and how many Namibian players queued up to take selfies with Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. One of the most enduring moments was after the All Blacks versus Springboks semi-final, at the end of the match, a dejected Jesse Kriel sitting in disappointment and leaning against a goalpost, head in his hands when Sonny Bill Williams comes across to him, hugs him, and lifts him from the ground to encourage him. Williams said after the match that he said to Jesse Kriel was “Nothing but respect bro.” Last mentioned shown his generosity towards a young fan on the weekend, giving away his World Cup medal without a second thought. That kind of display is invaluable to any sporting team. It is a ‘money can’t buy’ asset that few athletes possess and while he may have gifts on the field, I would say this is still more important. He gave that fan something he will never forget, and in a singular moment showed what he was all about. There have been numerous occasions where the All Blacks have shown genuine class. This is what sets them apart from the rest. This is what makes them the most successful team ever. Great lessons that we can learn from.

8 Ways to Protect Your Home While You are on Holiday When you leave your home, whether for a quick weekend getaway or a longer holiday, you'll want to take some basic safety precautions to keep your house and belongings as safe as you can. This makes most of us think about burglarproong, but preparations extend beyond locking your doors or setting timers for your lights. 1. Create the illusion that someone's home Beyond setting your lights on a timer, you can also set the television and radio on a timer to create the typical noise and ickering lights of an average family home at night. But wait, that's not all! Arrange for someone to mow at least once a week. If you normally leave toys outside, or keep a hose unrolled, or do anything that shows signs of a home being lived in, don't tidy up too much before you leave.

4. Advertise your security Especially when you're away, it can be a great idea to advertise your security measures. If you are subscribed to a security response company, ensure their sign is stuck visibly outside. 5. Unplug Unplug all unnecessary appliances (except those on timers, of course) to protect your home from an electrical re or power surge. This goes for the big stuff, like TVs, but also for your toaster, your coffee maker, and other small appliances. 6. Hide the hide-a-key It's impossible to forget your key if you're not even home, so go ahead and take any hidden spare keys out of commission. Just

don't forget to re-hide them when you return! 7. Safe-keep your valuables Lock up jewelry, wills, and any other valuables or sensitive documents in a reproof safe. 8. Alert Your alarm company and neighborhood watch Call your home security company to let them know you’ll be away. Make sure all of the door and window alarms are set and working when you leave. Test the alarm before you leave to ensure a strong signal at the security company. Request your neighbourhood watch for a drive by every now and again.

2. Mum's the word Never, ever announce your departure or vacation dates on social networks. Sharing settings are not foolproof and with new security updates it's always hard to tell what's public and what's private. Stay on the safe side, and don't mention your trip – until you're back, with tales to tell and photos to upload! 3. Trust a friend Give your holiday contact info and a spare key to at least one friend or neighbor. That way, they'll know how to contact you in case of emergency.

Your questions about Mediation answered Is a mediator a marriage counselor or therapist? A mediator does not fulfill the role of either a marriage counselor or therapist. Mediators neither encourage divorce nor encourage people to continue their relationship. The primary purpose of mediation is to encourage couples to reach mutually acceptable decisions. This in itself can have therapeutic benefit for the mediating parties. Mediators may refer couples or their children for therapy and counseling. How does divorce and family mediation work? Divorce, child custody and other family law matters involve some of the most complex and personal situations any person can encounter in a lifetime. You will have concerns ranging from dividing property and debt to custody and maintenance obligations. Mediation is a voluntary, confidential and practical way to resolve these problems with the assistance of an independent third party. In divorce litigation both parties are laden with additional financial burdens and children can become the innocent victims of their parent's hostility which can seriously deplete or wipe out a couple's savings which can be much better utilized for their children's or their own costs. Through divorce mediation you will experience a safe environment to create an agreement package where you are assisted by an independent mediator to make the vital decisions required offering several alternatives to consider.

When is the best time to start mediation? The sooner the better in an unresolved conflict situation, communication often break down, tempers flare up and there are a lot of misunderstandings that complicate the situation even more. When people stop talking to each other they rely on their legal practitioners, family or friends to rely messages. Anyone who has played the “telephone� game as a child knows that inevitable the last person in the row does not really know what the first person said when the message is passed on by people in the middle. In mediation you can start talking about what needs to be decided or what you may think you can talk about. You might be surprised about you ARE able to do. If you can make decisions together in mediation you control what happen to you in the situation. Must we both agree to mediation? Yes. Mediation can only work when both parties agree to participate. Never believe

that the other party will not be amenable to mediation. Many an opportunity is lost because a person thinks the other party will not mediate. The mediator can also meet with each party individually, if the parties agree to mediation. The mediator however at all times remains neutral. As mediation is completely voluntary any party can withdraw from mediation at any time and for any reason. What is the duration of mediation and the costs involved? The duration will be determined by the issues and the parties generally 3 to 6 sessions are necessary. Each session usually lasts approximately two hours. As the parties stay in full control of the process this substantially reduces the time spent in litigation. Responsibility for payment of fees may be shared by the parties in any way they deem appropriate and is payable before each session.

Benefits of mediation 1. Mediation takes less time so you can move on with your life; 2. It is less expensive and leads to more acceptable results than court rulings; 3. Better results as you remain in control of the decisions that affect your life; 4. It is less emotionally stressful than going to court 5. It benefits your children and other people involved in that it reduces conflict; 6. It reduces public disclosure of financial and personal matters.

Aloes and their woes The Aloe family is simply infinite, with many varieties in each letter of the alphabet, including the much admired quiver tree, Aloe dichotoma. Don't let aloe end in goodbye! As with all other members of the plant kingdom, aloes are also affected by pests and diseases. However if action is taken in time, it will involve less effort and minimal damage. Soapy solutions and other “friendly” methods used to be at the order of the day, but if you have a showpiece of a garden with large (often expensive) specimens), it is wiser to forget about “Mr Nice Guy” and put on the full armour instead. Systemic insecticides are used mainly to treat aloe canker whereas insecticidal dusting powder is applied to plants not in bloom, and if necessary when they are flowering, only to the lower part of the aloe to minimize environmental impact on bees. Ants and their aphid companions are the main culprits. The can cause complete demise of a large quiver tree, for instance, before any external signs are noticeable. Ants deposit the aphids between the leaves and stem, the stem suffers damage and it rots. They also neatly arrange the aphids where the top and bottom leaves cross over, making them invisible to the naked eye. Then the trick of tricks – when they work up the soil in little heaps around smaller aloes to hide the aphids. Too clever, but let's outwit them! Pay close attention after a spell of rain or after watering, should there be but one ant walking up the stem or on the leaves, it's inspection time. Keep soil around

plants clean and smooth so that any suspicious looking “hills” can be easily noticeable. Annie get your gun! Shake some of Efekto's Ant Dust in the crowns of aloes once a month to keep ants away and prevent snout beetles from laying their eggs here. Snout beetle larvae eat their way through the crown into the stem, causing rot in this area. Should this happen, clean the crown and treat it with a fungicide like Efekto's Virikop or Funginex. Let the wound dry and seal it with Efekto's Steriseal. More likely than not, more than one crown will form on the

Aloe canker is the ugliest of pests caused by a mite. Remove the malformed growth surgically as good as possible by use a sharp, disinfected knife (a paring knife works very well). Apply a systemic insecticide such as Efekto's Aphicide Plus or Plant Protector, doubling the dosage, over the wound using a small artist's paint brush. Take care not to drop any of the mixture on the rest of the aloe, where it drops it will cause irreversible damage. The mite will die in the affected spot and what's taken up of the insecticide will kill off any possible remaining mites in the rest of the system. Did you know? Ÿ Aloes, like Lithops, easily hybridize – don't worry, most hybrids are simply beautiful! Ÿ Aloe flowers have ample nectar and attract honey birds to your garden. Ÿ They are water wise and hate wet feet, drainage should be good – don't plant near sprinklers.
