They say that the Kitchen is the heart of the home, but I want to add that it's also the heart of a mother. Some of my earliest memories are watching my mom cook and she always caught me with my fingers in the pots. Lots of stories were told in the kitchen around the table. To me, the kitchen is more than just where our meals come from. It's where life happens. Doing homework, laughing, crying, learning the love for cooking and food, celebrating. Food is something that a family can connect over. Bond over. It's the one thing that we all have in common. And moms are the glue that makes everyone sticks around the kitchen. Everything happened in the kitchen. So, to have the cover page story about Upi-Kitchens made me appreciate the connection with Mother's Day. As kitchens and Mom's go together, we can create such special memories with our moms, our children and our husbands/ partners in that little space. Smart strategies for first-time buyers Young people are daily being urged to become homeowners and get onto the “property ladder” but it also needs to be said that most first-time buyers will probably have to take a much closer look at smaller homes, cheaper commutes and properties in need of renovation if they are to realize this goal. A smaller freehold home or a townhouse also means lower property taxes, maintenance costs, insurance premiums and electricity and water bills - and being able to enjoy a better lifestyle at the same time as becoming a homeowner. While affordability is of course the major concern of all those entering the market for the first time, there is often quite a serious disconnect between this concern and the size of home they would like to buy. However, rather than becoming discouraged, they need to understand that bigger isn't necessarily better these days, and not only when considering the purchase price or monthly bond

repayments. Young buyers should also not rush into a purchase. Research shows that the average first-time buyer looks at between 10 and 20 homes before buying, but it can really pay to be patient and view many more than that, and especially homes that have been listed for more than 90 days, because that is typically when anxious sellers start to reduce their asking prices.

Co-operating with your ex Successful parenting after a break up, or divorce relies on agreeing to disagree with your ex while always putting the best interest of your children first. Here are a few suggestions to help yourself and your children. Love never ends When you get divorced or break up with your partner, you need to move on with your life but you still have to put your children first. Explain to your children that your disagreements are never their fault although the disagreements affect them. Do your very best to make them feel secure and emotionally contained as they will thus be better equipped to deal with, and adopt new circumstances. They always have to know that they are allowed to be angry or sad or confused and that they can always talk to you about it. Do not hope for too much Many a woman who is awarded custody and control feels that after divorce her ex hardly pays attention to the children, only visits when asked to do so and becomes extremely angry about the situation. However do you believe if you stamp your foot hard enough a red chair will turn blue? Obviously not! So why not understand that your ex is always going to be the way he is and let go? Stop being disappointed when you ask for help and you do not get it. Just get on with it. There will be much less frustration and quite a lot of patting yourself on the back. You can't buy me love When your ex totally indulges the children when they are with him it becomes extremely difficult when confronted with “but dad gives you money”, when you say that you can't afford to buy things that your ex does. You can either choose to be controlled by this person and pennies and pounds or you can teach your kids that people are not defined by what they own. Me time Whichever way you see it when your ex moves out, a gap is left in your world. There is always a loss of relationship no matter how bad the marriage or relationship was. Do not dwell on the fact that they are not

with you, rather start to focus on you and enjoy your me time. Remember it is a luxury that you have which very few married moms or dads have. Chill The best thing you can do for your children as a single parent is to reduce conflict with your ex. Just because your ex moved out it gives you no reason to be disrespectful. Choose your words well in front of the children. Try not to elevate the trauma. Preserving the peace is also often the best way to be able to negotiate common parenting goals. Law and order It is a simple reality that a divorce or break up normally means that two people do not agree on many things including their ideas and approach to parenting. Joint rules are best for children. If you cannot agree on it between yourselves opt to mediate a parenting plan, in order to establish common rules like discipline when children are at the other home. In mediation, unlike in court, you and the mediator discuss and agree on how the mediation will be conducted, what will be included, and how and when it will be concluded. Mediation therefore does not encourage animosity and conflict between parents in the manner that it may happen in court. The whole process is child focused in that a great deal of consideration is given to the understanding of what will be in the best interest of the children concerned and how to best meet their needs. In mediation you can retain control over the decisions made on behalf of the children. The mediator can get a good understanding of children's needs, feelings, and concerns and can gain collateral input from teachers, health practitioners, psychologists, therapists and

the like. These issues are discussed with you and negotiations are facilitated so that you are encouraged and supported to focus on what is best for your children and not your feelings towards each other. It is possible to have similar rules in both houses such as the same bedtimes and no television during the week. You can even have a joint star chart, so if your children ask whether they can get a star, you can tell them that you first have to call daddy or mommy to check if they were good there too.

Thai Green Prawn Curry This is one of my all-time favorites and it really impresses. You won't believe how quick it is to throw together, especially if you find a good ready-made green curry paste. • 1kg large prawns, deveined & shelled (you can use prawn meat) • 2 onions, halved & sliced. • 3 large cloves garlic, chopped • Thumb size piece of ginger, grated finely • 1 heaped tablespoon on green curry paste (this depends on how I usually add more) • Peanut oil • Bunch of fresh coriander, roughly chopped • 2 cans coconut cream • 5 spring onions, sliced on the angle

Optional: If mangos are in season, then you can add 1 large mango that has been cubed. Add peanut oil to a large saucepan & heat. Add onion, garlic & ginger and cook until soft. Add green curry paste & cook through, you can add a little water if the curry paste seems to be sticking. Add chicken stock, and a little water so all the ingredients are just covered, cook through for 2 minutes. Add prawns (and mango if you are using), and the coconut cream. Leave to boil until prawns are pink and cooked. Don't over boil as the prawns will be tough. Add the mange tout and coriander right at the end. Check seasoning and add salt if required. Garnish with spring onions and serve with crusty bread. You can also thicken slightly with 2 teaspoons of corn flour mixed in a little water and then it can be served on jasmine rice.

Ants actually do no harm to us as humans, but can be very irritating in our gardens or when they enter our homes. Total eradication is not possible (or wise) as these creatures play an important role in the ecosystem. However control is necessary where ants protect sucking insects such as mealybug, aphids and scales against their natural enemies.

These are active in summer and autumn and relatively inactive in winter, except for warm, sunny days. They nest in the ground from where they collect honeydew on plants. Red Ant

A real pest all year round, even more so if the nests are allowed to get too large. The best approach to ant control in houses is to use baits. Baits pose little risk indoors versus insecticide sprays which often disperse colonies and make matters worse. Bait is a food that is laced with a slow-acting insecticide. Worker ants find this attractive and instinctively carry it back to their precious queen and soldiers. In this way they actually “dutifully” poison the colony over a period of time, in the end also perishing. How baits work

Often found on lawns and under buildings all year round, with activity peaking in summer and autumn. In both cases one often sees small heaps of soil on the surface. Remove the soil to expose the opening of the tunnel and pour

Baits target the colony. Ants are social insects and live in highly organized colonies. This social organization allows ant colonies to grow very large, but if the colony is disrupted, the ants will die together with the egg laying queen.

Efekto's Antrap consists of two bait stations containing an active ingredient similar to honeydew secreted by aphids. Place in- or outdoors where activity is noticed. Ants can easily enter the openings and will be just too happy to start foraging. Efekto has a new product – Ant Vanish, a granular “food bait” insecticide. Scatter a very small amount where ants are active. If all granules are gone, scatter some more. The moment granules are left and no longer carried off, it is a sure sign that the colony has suffered a final blow. Take care – not to use any insecticide sprays together with baits. The foraging ants may sense this and stay away from the bait or die before they can take the bait back to the nest.
