Tips on personal security during loadshedding
Load shedding is now almost a daily occurrence in South Africa. It is more than just an inconvenience it’s a crime risk too and has also resulted in an increase in vehicle accidents.
Here is some advice for home and on the road safety, provided by the skilled team of AR24.
•Make use of surge protection. Electric surges are one of the biggest causes of damage to equipment during a power outage. Installing a surge protection device can help minimise damage to your electrical equipment. Have a surge protection device fitted to your electrical distribution board or alternatively at the power outlet to the electronic device.
•Alarm systems, garage doors and electric gates generally rely on electricity so make sure that these items all have good back-up batteries.
Rather spend the money on a lithium-ion battery than lead acid batteries, they last longer and charge faster, for your alarm system and panic buttons to remain operable in emergency situations.
•Make sure that your cell phone battery is
fully charged at all times, your phone is your connection to the outside world.
•Keep a torch or a solar battery powered light, that is charged beforehand, in easily accessible places around your home. Be sure to also have plenty of spare batteries.
•Get a few high-wattage solar powered lights for your garden, and a few LED lights for inside. Light is a deterrent to potential burglars.
•Do not leave your gates, garage, front or back door open or partially open – it serves as an invitation to burglars.
•Ensure that you know how to manually operate electronic gates or garage doors so that you are able to gain access to your property during a power outage.
•Use padlocks, burglar bars and deadbolts to provide an extra level of home security that isn’t power-dependent.
•If you need to manually open and close your gates when you get home, try to have someone come and meet you at your entrance, or arrange for an escort from your security company.
•If you are using a generator never operate it in a confined area as it can produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal.
•Install the best security you can afford, for example, security gates for outside doors. It could save your life.
When approaching your house entrance by foot or by car ensure that it is safe to enter and that you have not been followed. Be aware of persons loitering at the entrance or street
•Most insurance policies stipulate in their contracts that the house alarm must be activated at all times when the home is unoccupied. So, if your house is burgled during a power cut it is possible that your insurance company will not pay out.
When on the road during loadshedding:
During load shedding, especially at night when street lights and traffic lights are down, all motorists must drive more cautiously especially so in poorly lit areas.
If traffic lights are out of order/not working, the crossing becomes a stop street- four way stop.
This means that you have to follow the rules of the road for a four-way stop, even if there is no traffic from the other roads. You still need to stop.
If the vehicle in front of you crosses the in-
tersection you would have to allow the vehicles from the other stops to enter the crossing before you can make your move.
Do not assume that all other drivers will stop, so exercise extreme caution and drive defensively. Also bear in mind that not all drivers know an area and its traffic intersections well, increasing the risk of them driving straight through an intersection.
In general, reduce speed during loadshedding as this will give you valuable extra time to react
Stay off your mobile phone and focus on the road. Drivers often spend more time on their mobile phones during load shedding to update others that they’re running late, a distraction that could prove fatal.
Beware of criminals, especially hijackers and smash-and-grab criminals, who want to use the cover of darkness to their advantage. Keep your car doors and windows locked and closed, be alert and fully aware of your surroundings and drive carefully.
All indications are that load shedding is going to be with us for a while, but a proactive approach to home and road safety will a long way in keeping you and your family safe.

SM holds first sport summit
Kodering en robotika nou by Wesbank
The Swartland Municipality hosted its first ever Sport Summit on Saturday.
The summit was set as a goal by Executive Mayor, Alderman Harold Cleophas, during his inauguration in November 2021.
The purpose of this summit was to call together all the sporting codes from the entire Swartland and to begin discussions about the establishment of a united sporting body to act in the interest of all sporting codes and represent sport in general in the Swartland area.
Mayor Cleophas said: “What we are trying to accomplish with this summit, is to create a united voice, a united body to act in the interest of all sport, of all participants and to further the interest of our clubs and our residents. To grow the active participation of sport and to give fair and equal footing too all represented sporting codes regardless of how mainstream or small they are.”
Dr Lyndon Boah, Chief Director for Sport and Recreation at the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport gave and overview of the roles and responsibilities of local governments and independent sporting bodies in the development and establishment of sports in a community. Mr Gerald Don, President of the West Coast District Sport Council gave inputs on what is expected of the various sporting codes.
Speaker Ald. Randall Swarts from Bergrivier
Municipality shared with us on their best practices as to how they establish their Sport Forums, Sport Councils, and the formation of the Bergriver Sport and Recreation Association.
The various sporting codes had the opportunity to break into discussion groups to do SWOT Analyses lead by DCAS West Coast Facilitators and give feedback and inputs on what their expectations are for the creation of a united Sport Council to represent the entire Swartland sporting fraternity.
The next steps will be to establish sport forums in all the Swartland towns, representing all sporting codes and then electing representatives to the Swartland Sport and Recreation Council.
“The hard work begins now. To establish and elect representatives for Swartland Sport and Recreation Council, to find money and make a budget available. This will be the next steps so that when we start the new financial year on 1 July 2023, we will have a united voice for sport in the Swartland. We know this process will be challenging, but I am confident that the sporting fraternity is committed to united approach to sport and sport development that will benefit the entire community. I am excited about what lies ahead and as Swartland Municipality we are committed to sport and the opportunities it will bring to all our residents." Mayor Cleophas said at the conclusion of the summit.

The 6 top building trends of 2023
tom line.
Whether you’re renovating, building new, or just dreaming about updating your space, understanding the trends and shifts occurring in design and building can help keep your organization fresh and relevant.
Some building & design trends look great at first but quickly fall out of style. Other trends are longer lasting, embodying more significant shifts in how we operate in our buildings. The trick to embracing long-lasting changes is to identify what is going to improve the way your people interact with your space.
Here are six trends we expect to see in 2023 that will improve your organization.
•Renewable Energy
•Connectivity & Smart Devices
•Energy-Saving Devices, Appliances, and Finishes
•Creating Spaces for Connection, Comfort, & Well-Being
•Placemaking
•Getting Input From All Stakeholders
#1: RENEWABLE ENERGY
Energy is money — especially in the 2020s.
From October 2021 to October 2022, electricity prices increased by 16.9% and gasoline costs increased by 18.8%, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That’s why we expect to see more organizations shifting to renewable energy sources in 2023.
Organizations of all sizes can install their own means of producing renewable energy. And while these systems cost money to install upfront, they’ll pay for themselves over time with the free energy they produce. These systems usually continue to operate long after they’ve reached their payback, generating pure savings for an organization’s bot-
#2: CONNECTIVITY & SMART DEVICES
Property management is a time- and resource-intensive endeavour, but technology is here to help you reduce your operations costs. With the rapid advancement of smart devices, organizations of all types can find ways to enhance their properties more efficiently.
Many of these start with indoor sensors, a system of devices that communicate where people are in your building throughout the day. They can help you schedule services like cleaning and maintenance around the building’s operations to minimize disruptions. You can also make data-driven decisions to optimize lighting, heating, and cooling.
Additionally, smart lighting, smart security systems, and smart thermostats can be controlled remotely, giving property managers the ability to adjust the building’s fixtures remotely and much more quickly.
#3: ENERGY-SAVING DEVICES, APPLIANCES, AND FINISHES
Another cost- and energy-saving trend we expect to see continued growth from is the installation of energy-efficient devices, appliances, and finishes. From heat-reflecting roofs to ultra-efficient windows, to something as simple as LED lighting, these changes can save your organization a significant amount on operating costs.
Whether you’re building new, adding on, or renovating, consider how you can make your building more efficient. It’s often much easier and more cost-effective to work these updates into a larger project than to make them independently.
These can either complement renewable en-
ergy sources or work independently. Either way, you’ll be cutting back on costly energy expenses.
#4: CREATING SPACES FOR CONNECTION, COMFORT, & WELL-BEING
You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t relieved most COVID-19 restrictions are rolling back. From social distancing to quarantining, many people limited their interactions with other people. Now, it’s time to reconnect, and we expect to see design and building trends that support this.
What this looks like will vary dramatically depending on your type of organization and business model. For organizations whose workforce transitioned to remote work, offices and workspaces can create versatile spaces that combine digital and physical infrastructure to support a hybrid environment.
Buildings of all types will likely embrace flexible environments that give people the ability to change interior arrangements to suit their needs, whether that be gathering with a large team, small group, or independently. We also expect to see a combination of casual and formal spaces that give people options as to where to spend time depending on their tasks.
#5 PLACEMAKING
Ever notice how you can walk into a popular chain restaurant and know exactly where you are, even if you didn’t see the sign? That’s the power of placemaking.
While placemaking is not a new concept, our desire to reconnect with people and spend time out of the home post-COVID-19 has renewed its importance. Coming out of these restrictions, we have a renewed respect for the environments in which we spend our time, and organizations are
realizing that the right space can give them an edge. In 2023, we expect to see this concept spread into organizations of all kinds. The environment in which people work can impact overall satisfaction and productivity. Intentional design can help draw in customers, residents, members, and employees.
#6 GETTING INPUT FROM ALL STAKEHOLDERS
When creating a new space or renovating an existing one, it’s often worth the time to get input from various stakeholders. Doing so will give you insight into the needs of the people who will be using the space on a daily basis.
Identify the key stakeholders and representatives from the different groups or departments in your organization. Ask them specific questions about what they need from the new space. Integrate their feedback where possible into the larger plan. It’s important that this environment of collaboration and teamwork continues into the construction process. One way to ensure that happens is by choosing the right design-build construction company. https://www.horstconstruction.com/

-Roux Vermeulen
