PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear friends,
We will mark 2023 as the end of an era.
Anne Corso, our Executive Director for the last five years, will be moving on to increasing responsibility at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA. During her tenure, through her dedicated work ethic, she propelled SVAC to a higher level of programming and community involvement. She will be remembered for her outgoing spirit and her engagement with everyone she worked with and met. She welcomed one and all to the myriad events “On the Hill.”
The Board of Trustees has begun a national search for Anne’s replacement. We are confident we can find an outstanding individual to lead us for the next several years. In the meantime, we will lean on Connie Blatchford as interim executive director.
The Board will also be focused on plans for revitalizing the infrastructure of our campus. Wilson needs repairs, and we want to expand our educational offerings by adding new classrooms to better serve our community.
We also intend to reexamine our significant permanent collection to highlight our rich heritage of Vermont artists. We will strive to expand our collection and display it more prominently and often.
Many thanks to the staff, volunteers, partners, donors and board for their continued support of SVAC’s mission of promoting and nurturing the arts.
And thank you, Anne.
Bob Van Degna Board President
DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Dear all,
I would like to share a story with you. During our peak season, a late summer storm rolled through Manchester and temporarily knocked out the power in our galleries. Though artwork wasn’t in jeopardy, the conditions didn’t allow for normal visitation, so the staff and I had to tell unsuspecting visitors that they would have to return once power was restored. One visitor was particularly disappointed when I informed her that, though she and her husband had driven several hours so that she could see the Red Dress, she wouldn’t be able to view it after all.
As they walked back to their car, I couldn’t bear the thought that someone who had followed the Red Dress project for years on social media would leave SVAC so disheartened. I called the couple back and took them through the staff entrance with my flashlight in hand. We entered the gallery and, with only the flashlight’s bulb, I gave them a tour of the beautiful and poignant Red Dress. I illuminated the stitches of the women who survived the rape camps in the Bosnian war, those who witnessed their families killed in the Rwandan genocide, and those who pulled themselves out of poverty in their home countries around the globe. And yet, despite the unimaginable hardships these women faced, they embraced the opportunity to create and share their art with the world. At the end of my makeshift tour, my visitor wept––the experience of the Red Dress was made even more powerful by our less-than-ideal circumstances. I was reminded of how privileged we are to do this work every day. To share art—art that means something—with one’s community and with the wider world, is a wonderful thing.
So as I write this letter for the last time, I wish to thank all of you—staff, members, donors, visitors, community members—for allowing me to serve as the Executive Director of SVAC for the past five years. I have been fortunate to surround myself with an incredible team, to learn from our highly talented trustees, to support our artists at various stages of their careers, to help create a roster of programs and events that keeps our community engaged throughout the year, and to be a part of launching a restaurant that rivals those of any major metropolitan area. From my very first day in early January of 2019, I have found the Southern Vermont community to be the warmest and most welcoming of any I’ve ever known.
When this Annual Report is published and mailed, I will have stepped down from SVAC and returned to Pennsylvania. I want each and every one of you to know how much I have appreciated your support. I hope that you continue to visit, to support, and to love this institution as much as I have.
Thank you and farewell,
Anne
“ Turning the corner and seeing the Red Dress was very emotional. To see the work and hear the stories of the women who worked on the dress was very moving. To be able to leave my mark on the Calico Dress was a great joy for me.”
SVAC VISITOR
EXHIBITIONS
2023 was SVAC’s most ambitious year for exhibitions to date, and a highlight of the year was the exhibition of UK artist Kirstie Macleod’s creation, the Red Dress. The powerful exhibition showcased the work of over 360 embroiderers from 46 countries around the world. Most contributors are women, many of whom are marginalized and live in poverty. The Red Dress helped garner many “firsts” for SVAC. The arts center was the first US venue to premier the Red Dress; SVAC staff collaborated with other museum venues to develop an audio guide; the exhibition drew record attendance on opening weekend; and more than 60 regional artists came to contribute to the complementary exhibition piece, the Calico Dress.
From global to local: the 2023 season also included the landmark exhibition For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection, which displayed more than 200 works of art collected over four decades and exhibited in a unique collaboration between SVAC and Bennington Museum. Thousands of people visited the exhibition, prompting hundreds of book sales as well as multiple events and tours.
Other exhibition highlights included Frippery, Finery, Frills, a two-artist exhibition in the Wilson Museum featuring the work of Sam Fields and Barbara Ishikura who investigated the depiction of women in domestic settings in thoughtprovoking ways. Cultural Landscapes featured the work of Alberto Rey including the debut of his site-specific installation of the ¡Battenkill! project, which included large-scale paintings of the Battenkill River. The annual Art From the Schools exhibition showcased the artwork of over 1,600 students from 34 schools. Two family-

friendly exhibitions, Ashley Bryan: The Spirit of Joy and The Wee Worlds of Salley Mavor delighted audiences with the work of beloved children’s book illustrator Ashley Bryan, and Salley Mavor’s miniature worlds full of characters and scenery, all created by hand with stitching, beads, and found objects.
Our robust artist member program also thrived this year, as artist members participated in two all-member exhibitions, and 20 artists working in a variety of media were selected for two rounds of solo exhibitions.
How can an arts center add to the quality of education and contribute to the lives of student learners of all ages? This year, SVAC took many steps forward in developing vibrant arts education for all.
During the summer months, campus bustled with the sound of children and teens taking part in 23 camps that included a high school studio intensive, puppetry, cartooning, comic book making, acting, playwriting, circus, music, cell phone photography and more, exploring fine arts in terms of themes such as nature, art history, magical creatures, and pets. During school break weeks, students also participated in various camps, and afterschool programs held throughout the year kept students engaged in acting and mixed media art-making.
Adult learners participated in a variety of classes at introductory to advanced levels in drawing, watercolor, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and painting––focusing on landscape, portraits, and figure. Classes took students off-campus to paint or to photograph, including at the beautiful Merck Forest
6 EDUCATION
“ Thank you for this wonderful workshop! Mark’s jovial personality and expertise in stained glass created a safe and friendly environment to explore the media. Great group, phenomenal teacher!” STAINED GLASS STUDENT
and Farmland Center. A renowned Philadelphia-based stained glass artist led students in a workshop that resulted in full stained glass window panels. Artists found opportunities to hone their practice with critiques and portfolio reviews. Visitors enjoyed talks by exhibiting artists. Students of yoga had indoor and outdoor opportunities to practice–both on mats and in hammocks suspended from the trees, in SVAC’s perennially favorite aerial yoga class.
SVAC also offered educational programs in partnership with other organizations. Ken Rush, an artist member and SVAC instructor, piloted six-week art classes for students in the ACCESS program at Burr & Burton Academy and also a unique mural-making program with the DREAM Program’s students from local affordable housing communities––connecting the Northshire and Southshire communities. Manchester Elementary Middle School’s program for English language learners worked with us to facilitate participation in camps to help develop language skills over the summer. We greatly enhanced our scholarship efforts, awarding over $17,000 in scholarships to 85 participants. SVAC’s Education and Exhibitions staff provided workshops and social opportunities for area teachers, as well as guided field trips and community service opportunities for local students.
7
Though SVAC is “up on the hill,” it is truly in the heart of the community and has become the place for some of the most popular regional events. The Annual Holiday Craft Market has drawn close to 2,000 visitors over the course of the Veteran’s Day holiday weekend. This year, SVAC received twice the number of applicants as in previous years, and holiday shoppers were able to meet, greet, and shop with some of the most talented artisans from New England and the Capital Region.
For those looking to support artists at the earliest stages in their careers, Art From the Schools provides a joyous look at the creativity bursting from our region’s school and homeschool students. The opening pizza party and reception brought hundreds of families to celebrate the occasion.
Likely, everyone’s favorite event is Halloween on the Hill. This year, the cold and rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 800+ participants who came out in costume. Adults and children enjoyed story readings and classical performances by Taconic Music, magic shows, face painting, fortune telling, make-and-take art projects, outdoor games, a bounce house, music by the Long Trail School student band, food from a variety of local vendors, an art scavenger hunt, and a costume parade and contest. New additions to the 2023 lineup were a

showing of Tim Burton’s film The Nightmare Before Christmas and a pet costume contest judged by Second Chance Animal Center in Arlington, VT. More than 20 local businesses helped sponsor the event, either with cash or in-kind donations, and dozens of volunteers worked before and during the event to help make Halloween on the Hill a great success.
Folk, Broadway, Blues, and more. SVAC offered a dazzling array of performances in the Arkell Pavilion. Blues rocker Albert Cummings and opening act Veronika Jackson, with her soulful acoustic style, kicked off the summer season.
Troy Wunderle delighted young and old with his Family Circus performance. The Music of the Knights paid homage to legendary songwriters Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. A magical evening brought together three up-and-coming folk music acts, Heather Maloney, Ash and Eric, and Carling & Will. SVAC also launched partnerships with Mountainfilm on Tour for its collection of inspirational documentary films and the newly minted Opera Vermont for an evening of some of opera’s greatest arias. In her triumphant return to the Arkell stage, Maxine Linehan performed her holiday show This Time of Year to yet another sold-out audience.
Community partnerships enhanced the diversity of programming. Manchester Music Festival hosted its 49th season as Philip Setzer joined as artistic director.
Southern Vermont Ballet dancers took the stage for their spring recital and again for the family favorite The Nutcracker. SVAC continued partnership programming with Northshire Bookstore, hosting book talks by sci-fi writer T.J. Klune, acclaimed

novelist Kristin Hannah, Metropolitan Museum of Art staffer-turned-writer Christine Coulson, and longtime supporter and community member Caren Simpson McVicker for the launch of her debut novel Henderson House. SVAC proudly partnered with Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning on its fall lectures and to showcase the Great Art on Screen film series.
While SVAC’s programming and exhibitions feed the imagination, curATE café has continued to feed the community some of the most creative cuisine in Southern Vermont under the skilled hand of Chef Julie Heins. curATE café has become a destination for special occasion meals as well as creative culinary events such as Jazz Brunch, Italian Night, and the holiday offering Feast of the Seven Fishes.

2023 FINANCIAL SUMMARY
2023 was in many ways a successful year. Revenue from programming was up 15% due to two successful exhibitions, the Red Dress and For The Love of Vermont, higher enrollment in education classes and an increase in memberships.
When the commitments to our capital campaign are summed with our annual fund, SVAC had a very successful fundraising year.
Before non-cash depreciation charges, expenses were up 8.5%, primarily due to higher education and programming costs.
A strong stock market substantially increased the value of our endowment, contributing to net revenue of over $300,000 for the organization.
We continue to strive for financial sustainability with the continued support of our community.

The Southern Vermont Arts Center (SVAC) is a multidisciplinary arts organization in Manchester, VT with a mission to promote and nurture the arts. SVAC strives to provide opportunities for local and regional artists, to introduce the wider community to artwork and performances of national relevance, and to engage diverse audiences. To do this, SVAC creates a community space for the arts through exhibitions, events, performances, and classes in a variety of media for children and adults, and an opportunity to explore the 100+ acre campus and sculpture park.
