VOICES / PORTRAITS IN RED

on view through April 21

These two exhibitions bring visibility to domestic violence and sexual assault through Voices, Cat Del Buono’s multi-channel video installation featuring survivors of intimate partner violence, and Nayana LaFond’s series of Portraits in Red, depicting missing and murdered indigenous people as well as activists working to end this crisis.

Our annual celebration of artwork by young people! This exhibition, showcasing students aged 1-19, is guaranteed to spread inspiration and joy. Drawings, paintings, and sculptures from more than 30 schools will fill the museum. Don’t miss the opening party on Saturday, April 27.

This year, Art from the Schools welcomes the Congressional Art Competition. Winning artwork will be on display beginning May 4.

SVAC gratefully acknowledges the teaching and logistical work of the teachers whose expertise, time and care infuse the exhibition.

These partner exhibitions feature new artwork from members of two of Vermont’s esteemed media-specific arts organizations: the Vermont Pastel Society and the Vermont Glass Guild. Pastel Panorama: Journeys with a Medium celebrates experimentation in pastel across a wide range of styles. Sand to Splendor: The Nature of Glass highlights the intersections of glass-making and the natural world.

FUNDAMENTALS OF STAINED GLASS

Carve a branch of basswood into a sculptural and functional walking stick. You might like to shape a soft, comfortable handle or an elegant, tapered tip–or even give your walking stick a face. CHIP CARVING

Ages 16+

Usually done on flat surfaces, traditional chip carving is a northern European decorative tradition. Traditional designs tend to be rhythmic and geometric. Workshop participants may choose to adjust the shapes of wood removed, as well as the shapes of the surfaces they carve, in order to find their way to new visual ideas. New and experienced woodworkers are welcome.

Enhance self-expression by use of the palette knife, spatcher and wedges. These tools can offer a new kind of freedom of stroke, add textural changes and broaden your painting vocabulary. The knife brings more intense color; the wedge and spatcher enhance edges and smooth swipes of paint.

How do you make something balance, spin, oscillate and pulse? This is a chance to play with engineering and design. Using mostly hand-powered tools, we’ll create simple, wind-activated mechanisms out of wood, paper, cloth and string. Learn techniques that will enable you to invent interesting structures–this weekend and forever. New and experienced woodworkers are welcome.

INTRODUCTION TO IMPRESSIONISM

A brief overview of the history of Impressionism will be given, as well as how to approach painting in this style. A range of acrylic painting techniques, discussion of atmospheric perspective, and a focus on use of light will guide us as we paint an original landscape inspired by the Impressionist style.

DRAWING ON NATURE: INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL DYES

Ages 16+

Learn to make a selection of natural dyes, and use them to create ink drawings. We will begin by creating basic dyes–boiling black walnut, onion skins, turmeric and indigo to produce five distinct colors. We will collect natural objects to draw, such as twigs, leaves, bark and fungi. Drawings will begin with pencil and india ink; dyes follow, and the instructor will provide guidance about some of the idiosyncrasies in the use of each dye.

GMALL PRESENTS ALEXANDER GARDNER: CAPTURING LINCOLN AND THE CIVIL WAR

Join photographer Christopher Dant as he leads us through some of the most remarkable history of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln through Alexander Gardner’s beautiful images.

Christopher Dant is a local writer and photographer who studied with the legendary photographer Ansel Adams in Carmel, California. His photographs have been part of several shows at Southern Vermont Arts Center. He is a local novelist and serves as a docent at Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home.
